A History of the Democratic Republic of Congo… From IG - @redstreamnet — Did you know that the CIA once orchestrated the execution of Patrice Lumumba by a firing squad? On the 17th of January, 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Congo, was executed by a firing squad following assassination plots concocted by the US and Belgian governments. Lumumba’s anti-imperialism and his vision of a united Congo made him an adversary of both Belgium and US imperialism. Although the CIA ordered his assassination, they weren’t able to carry it out themselves. Instead, Washington and Brussels secretly funnelled cash and aid to rival politicians who organized a coup and arrested Lumumba. He was then beaten, tortured, and killed. #BlackHistory #PanAfrican #AfricanHistory #AntiColonialism

When ppl talk about the "banality of evil" its often about how boring the system that upholds imperialism is, but it's also how evil is commonplace, an ingredient to the cement that builds the foundation of the imperial core. You read about what the IOF is doing to Palestinians and yet fail to realize that American soldiers were doing the same things in the Philippines in 1902 during the american occupation, which is still not recognized as a genocide to this day. You think about Congo today but don't realize that a hundred years ago within the same land, the king of Belgium would cut off the hands of natives if they didn't collect and extract enough rubber, and its not much different when you replace"rubber" with "cobalt", "Belgian king" with "American oligarch".. the world immediately, utterly feels godless. One war seamlessly transitioning into another. How can there be so much grief for something as ordinary as a component to something I am literally holding in my hands right now. How can you make sense of that.
In the Philippines, there is a legend that says that the sturdiest, strongest buildings are constructed using the blood of a thousand children. The most prominent structure to remember this legend by, was a bridge called "Tulay ng San Juanico", built by none other than Philippine Dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who is renowned to this day by his record of unfathomable human rights abuse. San Juanico Bridge stands, used for commute in the daily lives of filipino civilians under the shadow of the empire, in an all consuming, impenetrable and unbearable mundanity. You can find 20, 45, a hundred, a million people who are kind, but at the same time I think about how so many of these kind people walk this earth without thought or personal responsibility, completely and totally unwilling to lose an iota of comfort and convenience, without once stopping to think, what do they owe the next coming generation, the ones that are still here, and the ones nameless and buried in this world's wreckage, in the necessity of its evil.

sunset in kinshasa 🧡
hiiii usually i put my ramblings in the hashtags but i just felt like writing a bit because i haven’t been posting edits like i usually do and i have been feeling terrible that i haven’t 💔 i wanted to post this before or soon after i posted my kipetaka braids but just felt too lazy and uncreative to make any edits with the photos from this photoshoot. i also really wanted to share the inspiration behind this because as a black simmer, i have always wanted a west african world and when it came to making the set for this i really had to think and research how i could emulate a west african market despite the fact that i sadly have never been to one before. plus there’s literally no build buy mode or world that was made with west african culture and history in mind by ea! so, zhong feifei’s vogue china historic and iconic photoshoot in the dr congo was a huge inspiration for this photoshoot especially since my sim (dominique) is also heavily inspired by another congolese celebrity, lous and the yakuza! so this became my own homage to the democratic republic of congo, which has been struggling with the immense effects of belgian colonialism, imperialism, technological exploitation by the west, and environmental racism for decades. nowadays, im hesitant and conflicted to say that i want an west african world in ts4 because i no longer wanna support (especially financially) ea’s shady and ultra capitalist practices when it comes to technology (cough ai cough) and the potentially harmful effects it will have on the environment and marginalized people especially in countries like the drc. idk what goes on when ts4 makes a new pack and i could be wrong but it doesn’t hurt to be wary of a notoriously racist and evil capitalist company these days 🤷🏾♀️ im just thinking out loud but i would love to hear what other black simmers think especially those who live in west africa! anyways, i hope that the drc will be free from all of this very soon and i love my congolese cousins and (possible) ancestors 🫶🏾 please check out the list i made if you want to help ppl in the drc!

Go make your own post about astarion's height converted to metric. This was a post figuring out HALSIN's height. astarion was only ever a reference point and is umimportant. as his height was already a known quantity.
Also both sources of astarion's height used the imperial system. So fuck off with your "normal people" condescension and xenophobia.
their fucking tags
*sweating* waiting for these two to have the exact same lean next to each other was...well... lets just say I enjoyed watching their backsides.
We have two possible heights for Astarion. 5'9 as indicated in a Larian tweet. And 5'11 as an observation from a Githyanki Tavurge... I decided...to well....uh figure out exactly how tall Halsin is in comparison - give or take a half an inch to an inch.
SO you have two options-ish
If Astarion is 5'9, then Halsin is 6'2.5 (184.15 cm) if Astarion is 5'11, then Halsin is 6'4.5 (189.23cm)

Liberals say a lot of dumb shit, but if you're going to bother critiquing it then you need to understand what they're trying to say in the first place. Like "Late Stage Capitalism" isn't an especially useful or coherent term, but you can't dismiss it with "just say Imperialism" because that is very obviously not what people are talking about when they use it. Even just by contemporary usage, you should notice how it's nearly always employed by people complaining about declining quality of life (i.e. cuts to social safety nets, reduced domestic regulations, growing mismatch between costs of living and wages) within the Imperial Core. You never hear left liberals use it to discuss even the most obviously evil manifestations of Imperialism (i.e. coups and election subversion, "unjust" invasions, dropping napalm on children etc.) that even they are willing to criticise sometimes. In the contemporary discourse, it's functionally just a way to critique Neoliberalism by comparing it to Social Democracy- both are still equally Imperialist systems. Like "The Highest Stage of Capitalism" is consistently used by ML to mean imperialism, while "Late Stage Capitalism" is mostly used by Liberals to complain about getting an insufficient share of the loot.
There's also a need to consider that the idea of "Late Stage Capitalism" wasn't even popularised by left liberals; they merely adopted it and became its most enthusiastic users/abusers. The original use of the term "Late Capitalism" was in the early 20th century by reactionary (but Marxist influenced) German sociologist Werner Sombart to describe the state of capitalism in his time. However, by the 1960s it was most popular among members of the Frankfurt school of Marxism when discussing the features of the Post WW2 era. Its first popular use in English was in the 1975 translation of the thesis Late Capitalism by Belgian Trotskyist Ernest Mandel, but the person who popularised it the most was probably USamerican Marxist Frederic Jameson. He used it in his 1991 essay "Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, which effectively engaged in the sort of "society has become soooo superficial and consumerist" critique that liberals are happy to eat up. This implanted the phrase firmly in the heads of Anglophone Imperial-Core Left Liberals and adjacent revisionists, and by the 2010s as more and more people were drawn into that whole milieu ("became radicalised" as they like to put it) the phrase spread and spread and now you see it everywhere in any vaguely "leftist" space.
Now this whole summary isn't an attempt to defend the phrase by discussing its pedigree; I don't think it was ever a very good or useful phrase and that developments in global capitalism can be discussed without declaring the dawn of a new epoch based on a disconnected jumble of often superficial changes. My point is that the phrase has a whole history of its own; it's not something that got thoughtlessly made up one day and any meaningful critique of the phrase has to consider this. You need to meet people where they are at, based on what they're actually saying and not what it roughly sounds like they're saying. When you treat "Late Stage Capitalism" as just the Liberal version of "Highest Stage of Capitalism" because the two phrases sound kinda similar, it's criticism of the most superficial and idealist type. In your attempt to "pwn the liberals", you've ended up talking like one
#stella speaks#I've linked to essays about the works rather than the works in question because#A. I haven't personally read them I'm just tracing the way they use a particular phrase and#B. I'm not especially concerned with the works themselves but rather their context and impact#I don't especially care for any of them so track them down yourself if you want but I'm not inclined to help lmao

I don't want to embrace the racist cultural hegemon that is United States culture though. I need something that doesn't devestate literally half of the world
I mean it is 100% justified to dislike a lot about modern hegemonic American culture but like if complicity in imperialism is the issue better hope your authentic cultural heritage isn't [English/French/German/Belgian/Dutch/Russian/Italian...] then! (Personally basically my mother's entire family tree is some variety of Scotch-Irish, which means my 'authentic cultural heritage' basically is religious oppression and settler colonialism.)
But just like, generally - culture isn't something you can do alone (basically axiomatically). If you want to devote yourself to historic Irish cuisine or traditional Slovenian textiles or whatever, absolutely do it! Personal hobbies are a great way of feeling fulfilled and filled your days with something engaging and fun. But your 23&Me result doesn't make doing so any more authentic or natural than if you got into origami or Russian ballet instead, y'know? Thinking that it does is what can lead you to some dangerous places (also according to several Irish people I've talked to it will reliably make you very annoying to anyone who actually lives in the place in question).
Culture's gotta be lived if you're going to embrace it, which requires a community of people to celebrate it with. At which point the exact thing you're celebrating and embracing feels, I don't know, kind of arbitrary? It can be whatever! Have fun with it! Just make sure you don't accidentally recreate the Orange Order.
