The Weave Mind may just be my favourite critical role boss fight ever, actually. I just finished the episode and from the very start when he brought out the map I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't realise just how good

Okay, rant incoming

Like, first of all, it's all very thematically relevant. Like, yes, they have multiple strategies prepared, because they've been watching you on their little orbs. And yes, they all share the burden, they're psychically connected entities. Yes, they have a massive lair that they can use against you, they have been building their empire for, what, centuries? They're gonna be super well protected

The crystals, the triangle they form, there are so many moving parts to that fight that make it so much more than just big number go brrr. Not only that, it doesn't debilitate the players. It's a pretty brutal fight, but in a way that encourages them to be creative and to collaborate and plan, which is when D&D encounters are most fun, imo

But perhaps most importantly, it solves a very big problem that many DMs, including Matt, struggle with when balancing for high level fights, which is action economy. The fact that it is 5 separate enemies with their own turns and legendary actions while evenly distributing hit points (which is also narratively relevant, making it feel interesting and not just like an overpowered cop out) just makes this almost completely foolproof, because it doesn't rely on completely taking players out of the fight, or giving an enemy infinite actions (yeah, we don't have time to go into that debate now-) to try to even it out. It works and it feels natural and justified--which is just straight up good game design

Besides that, it also just plays on a lot of my personal favourite boss fight dynamics--considering my favourite video game boss fight is the Mantis Lords from Hollow Knight, I think you can probably see the similarities. I love anything that has multiple bosses of equal stature who work in sync, it adds an extra layer of omnipotence to them--plus I just prefer it over one big bad, or an army of little enemies. Not only that, their whole psychic floaty thing they've got going on really gives the vibe of the Dreamers, also from Hollow Knight. He picked his themes and stuck with them to the end, and this really rounds off the feel of this fight

I think I did a little content sigh when the fight was done, because I know I'm going to enjoy going back and watching it again to really appreciate all the little elements that make it tick. It really felt like a bit of a dance there, where the players feel thoroughly involved, even if they were getting their asses handed to them for the first couple of hours. It's interesting, it rewards ingenuity and learning about the bosses as they go (again, on theme, because the Weave Mind are the definition of 'know your enemy' in their own approach), and when the party was losing big time, they knew it was from their own disorganisation--which is exactly how you want to feel in a hard boss fight, because then it becomes all the more satisfying when you finally figure it out and your punches really start connecting

I really do hope that Matt keeps learning and developing his games design skills like this, because I do feel that there haven't been many memorable fights this campaign (2 of which being against Otohan and another 2 against Ludinus' simulacrums, and even then, they didn't feel particularly interesting to me). To be totally fair to him, this campaign has been very people focused, if that makes sense, and it's quite a bit harder to make a fight against a single person just as interesting as a fight against a custom monster, the latter being where Matt really thrives imo

To me, it's made a lot of the fights very narratively relevant (as in, there are ties to the plot and personal ties for the PCs), but not exactly thematically immersive, and I think you need a good balance of both for them to really shine--and the Weave Mind fight really had that balance for me. It's really nice to have a reminder that he absolutely has still got it--he's just not quite been in the territory to show off some of the things that got him known as such a great GM and games designer in the first place

Which is why I really look forward to where things will go after this, once they've had the time to reflect on all 3 campaigns so far, because I really love to see Matt in his element, designing cool monsters, crazy terrain and challenging the players in a way that engages them in the story, rather than distancing them from it

Ever since realising that Joey referring to Jaskier as sapiosexually connecting with Radovid was likely 100% intentional, I've literally been losing my shit over the potential implications...

Like... new headcanon!

What if Jaskier has always approached the act of having sex with someone else as a form of performance art, driven by his desire to please his "audience", and making other people passionately respond to what he's doing for them?

Like... what if what normally sexually interests him isn't so much inspired by the other person, but more by the general idea of being wanted, needed, and the anticipation of the positive feedback he might get from sexually interacting with them.

He readily experiences primary aesthetic attraction towards other people, finds them interesting, becomes curious about them, and feels instantly affectionate towards them; but he's not sexually aroused by / attracted to them, per say.

He really wants to make them feel good, and bask in that sense of intimacy, togetherness and praises he receives from being sexually involved with them (yeah, because he's that good at figuring out what pleases them, and offering it to them).

And somehow, audience response/participation tends to really inform how good or "smooth" he is when it comes to his ability to seduce someone, and convince them to become sexually intimate with him in the first place?

For example...

So... what if Jaskier is a bard and an artist through and through? Not just on stage, but in the sheets as well?

Turning sex into poetry and something very deliberate, where it's all about a sense of artistic expression, and a pure melody of various physical sensations and emotions!

Sexually? Jaskier is an artist, a creative, a free thinker... All is fair!

But it's not something that he usually feels any urge or need to engage in based on the way someone else inspires him any sudden desire to have sex with them specifically.

He loves his sexual partners, he's intrigued by them, he wants to connect with them - even if that connection lasts but a night - and sex allows him to do that.

But maybe he has no idea that sex might be experienced differently by others.

Maybe he just thinks they're like really really REALLY expressive and appreciative of the sex itself, or something, whenever he notices how hungrily some of them appear to throw themselves at him, or at each other.

Also, I've somehow always found it a bit weird how Jaskier seems to fully remain clear minded during Yennefer's magical orgy.

Yennefer comments on how Geralt seems to be immune to her spell, as if it's some kind of big deal!

But then, there's Jaskier...

He just waves at them as if he's totally unaffected by everyone else fucking each other around him, and being surrounded by a bunch of naked bodies having sex...

And/or looks like he's not quite comfortable with the way someone's hand is moving closer to his crotch at some point...

Grant it, he's slowly being suffocated to death by a Djinn's magic, and likely has other priorities than sex in mind!

But that's just the thing...

Isn't Yennefer's spell supposed to override people's ability to think rationally or fully understand what's happening? Everyone snaps out of it looking confused, and poor Jaskier just basically passes out, but he's never once looked like he stopped looking at what was happening around him from an outsider's P.O.V.

Whenever the camera cuts to him, he seems to be sharing the same reality as Geralt and Yennefer, not the kind of sexual haze everyone else appears to be happily trapped in.

Would being affected by the Djinn just make him immune to the whole "sex weed magic thingy" as well?

Or would the usual lack of primary sexual attraction towards other people make it a bit harder for Yennefer's spell to take a hold on him?

(Another headcanon theory I came up with - should Jaskier be revealed as being the direct descendant of Fjall and the Lark - would be that, perhaps, the small touch of magic in his blood would be enough to make him more resistant to certain types of spell... On top of being able to eat whatever he comes across without freaking poisoning himself, I swear!)

But yeah, let's just imagine, for a moment, that sapiosexual Jaskier would have no clue (or very little clue) of what it actually feels like to specifically be sexually attracted to someone (rather than the sex itself, and all it may represent to him) in a way where you are viscerally craving that sexual contact with that specific someone, and you feel like you might go crazy if they don't finally have sex with you.

Then, along comes Radovid, that he develops a sapioromantic and sapiosexual attraction for...

And, for a while, Jaskier thinks he's just losing his freaking mind, because there are moments where Radovid is just there, simply being all sensitive and insightful while discussing dwarven politics with Yarpen, for example...

... and poor Jaskier's never been so sexually aroused in his life!!!

But Radovid is not even technically doing anything that's supposed to be "sexually charged"!

He's fully clothed, being all smart and sensitive, talking about a topic of interest to him while having lunch by the side of the road...

...and Jaskier is just there, casually eating next to him while listening to him talk with their friends.

It's 100% casual and totally trivial, day to day stuff... No plan for Jaskier to try and seduce him and have sex there!

So, how come does he suddenly feel the urge to pounce on him and beg Radovid to just take him right here and there, in front of all their friends at camp, and it's taking all the self-control he can humanly muster not to act upon that impulse?!

Instead, Jaskier stands up, awkwardly excuses himself, and decides the best way to manage the situation is to go take a random dip fully clothed in the nearest river.

"Why?", they ask. Because he was getting hot, that's why!

And no, he couldn't just remove his clothes instead! He liked them really baggy an concealing that day, thank you very much!

As a matter of fact, he might decide to just start wearing his shirt over his pants from now on, because he's starting a new fashion trend! No other reason!

Like yes, it has happened to him before to have "the muses" whisper in his ear that sex with a certain someone might be good, and he's typically very open to sudden bursts of inspiration and unplanned sexual improvisation!

But that's not the same thing!

It only happens specifically with Radovid - especially when he's saying or doing something really witty, sensitive or insightful - and it's like his whole body suddenly catches fire, gets all tense and trembling with need; and being touched by him and having sex with him feels like finally being able to breathe after someone's forcefully been holding your head under water for a while...

Radovid must be bewitching him, somehow, for sure!

It does and it doesn't, I think. Some things get easier and others harder - the first obstacle being finding your tribe.

My problem was that I found my tribe very early, and my tribe wasn't good for me. A lot of drinking, arrogance as the norm, self-destructive behaviour, etc. We used to get tanked instead of going to lectures and spend all day shouting at each other about Nietzsche or Marx or Sylvia Plath. It was intellectually enriching but emotionally dangerous as each day would end with one of my friends stood sobbing in my kitchen because whatever it was they were trying to outrun had caught up to them. Things only got better for me when I stepped away from them.

I'd say, on the whole, it usually is easier than high school. Especially in the early days where everyone is unsure of themselves, it's a new place, and they're all looking for something or someone to hold onto. Trust me - start a small conversation with someone at random and see them light up. Even if it's just "how's it going?". You're all in the same boat waiting for someone to speak first, sometimes that has to be you.

Beyond that I'd look at what societies and clubs run at your university - find something that speaks to your interests and go along for a meeting. You'll likely find at least one person there who's of a similar mind.

As for your feelings about your classmate - trust me, the skill cliff isn't as sharp as you might think. Some people have a lot of talent - absolutely - but no staying power. When I did my creative writing masters I had similar feelings. Some of my classmates were better writers, some of them had even been published or written professionally (one of the script consultants for Kick-Ass was in my cohort), and I realised I had a choice: I could either let them intimidate me, or I could outwork them.

I went for the second option, and then did it again for my PHD when faced with a similar divide between myself and my colleagues. Some were awarded winning playwrights, others had won short fiction prizes.

Art in all its forms is work, and it's work over a long period of time. To succeed you need stamina and grit, and you can absolutely develop those over time. So some people in your class are already more accomplished, or some are more talented or skilled (for now) - outpace them.

Set your stride early, decide how much you need to do each week and stick to it. If you can maintain your pace you'll outstrip them in a matter of weeks - especially the ones who already think they've made it. Then teach other people how to do it, set an example and bring people with you.

Grocery shopping with Rayan is so funny because he has his little list and it always begins with him following it diligently but he’ll always end up wandering around the aisles (and Candy looses him in the supermarket)

He and Candy often end up buying everything but what’s on the list lmao

Loves perfumed candles, there’s dozen in their apartment (I JUST KNOW THIS, and if Candy looses him during grocery shopping, he's probably picking up some)

He likes cleaning days  and he’s very particular about the cleaning products he uses (once again he spends so much time in the supermarket choosing them)

He often puts on jazz or (modern) classical music in the background while he’s working or reading 

He knows all the tea about the neighbours and he shares it with Candy (he’s very good at small talk and at connecting with people, therefore my man end up being told everything that’s going on in the building lol)

How come most people don't realise how good Alex Lifeson is as a guitar player? He really stands out among other rock guitarists. Is it because he played with such an amazing band in Rush?

Brian Shaffner:

I don’t think he is today at all. Especially, in conversation with other musicians, or aspiring musicians, Alex’s playing is very well regarded.

During the ‘Van Halen Clone’ era, when that whole “guitar as penis” thing was at its most excessive and prevalent, Alex didn’t rank so well in the polls. He refused to jump on that train — was much more focused on rhythm guitar and providing texture and atmosphere. His solos were usually intense, but comparatively short, and exercises in feel rather than sheer technique. All of which was subtle enough that it went above the heads of the average rock music fan, eager to hear bombast and wankery.

Personally, I would say Alex is less of a virtuoso than Geddy is, or Neil was. However, that doesn’t mean he’s any less talented, or vital to the core sound of Rush’s music. A good part of Rush’s distinction is that driving, winding, powerhouse bass and drums, draped in the moods, emotion, and atmosphere that the guitar provides. For me, Rush would likely be too mathematical in its approach, with some UC Berkeley graduate, Vai-esque guitarist. Alex actually saves the band from sounding that way, being a highly emotive player. Some of his technical limits became creative strengths, as he came up with imaginative approaches to complement such a dynamic, surging, and in-your-face rhythm section. His playing on the instrumental ‘YYZ’ is one strong example of what I’m getting at — written after Geddy and Neil had laid down the basic track (he doesn’t receive a writing credit on that one, which I feel is an oversight, irregardless that it began life as a Lee/Peart jam). In Geddy’s words (more or less):

“Then Alex came in, and added his part, which really took it to a whole other level.”

Yes, Alex was absolutely underrated during the 80’s and early 90’s, when polls that ranked guitar players like competitive athletes were a big friggin’ deal. However, his playing has endured and aged far better than many of those guys, many of whose names we barely remember today, and whose approach just sounds dated and passe. While Alex is still well known, and counted as an important influence by many players.

His lines are atypical, angular, sometimes atonal, and harder for people to understand who have grown up on rock and blues guitar that is less “outside.” I used to think he was simply no good at lead guitar. These days, I really admire his lines and feel, as you do, that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

Oh God! We need to talk!

I have been insane ever since the RWRB movie came out but I guess you can only stay immersed in a fandom for so long before you start to see its more insidious aspects.

This thought has entered my mind before but I chose not to engage because fandom should ideally be fun and a break from reality. Unfortunately, all of humanity's creations contain humanity's flaws and I can't keep turning a blind eye anymore.

I don't think this post is going to do much but if it makes even one person realise they aren't alone in their experience it would have served its purpose.

So, let's talk about fandom racism.

The only other couple that I ship that is an interracial one is Joe and Nicky from The Old Guard. They are also an interfaith couple so they really had the odds stacked against them from the very beginning. But by the time I came into that fandom, there was a real movement to call out racial bias and ignorance in Joe's portrayal. So I thankfully avoided the racism in that fandom because when I got involved in that fandom there was an active will to counter said racism which also made me very careful regarding how I interacted with that fandom. I was just more informed so I protected myself.

The thing I totally forgot while getting into this fandom is that FirstPrince is also an interracial couple. This fandom is very passive in its racism because you can tell fandom racism exists by how people choose to not interact at all with certain elements that are a part of this ship and never has the insidiousness of racism been more obvious than since the movie came out.

It's obvious that a lot of people just didn't engage with the fact that Alex is biracial. The book actually plays a huge part in it because, for the most part, it doesn't do a good job of portraying Alex as someone who comes from two cultures and speaks two languages (even though I have to say that the only time Alex speaks Spanish where it is presented as such in the book is also one of the most beautiful moments in the book and that fact that it isn't talked about nearly as much kind of proves my point). But with the release of the movie, it's harder to ignore Alex's race.

I mean frankly, it is so obvious in the way this fandom treats the actors portraying these characters that they are being confronted by the interraciality of this couple for the very first time.

It's a lot harder to ignore colour on screen.

I love the fact that the director chose to lean into Alex's roots.

But the true impetus for writing this post comes from a fic I recently read which reminded me of this post that I had seen on Tumblr (you can read it here) and combining that with the above issue meant that I felt like I should speak up if only for my own mental peace.

Now, I am very much of the opinion that if you don't like a fanfic you shouldn't engage with it because fanfic writers don't owe you anything. The mere fact that they choose to share their works of art with the public is kind of a very selfless deed. But, I need to talk about this fic because it really started highlighting the issues that insidiously exist in this fandom (we should probably make a drinking game of how many times I use the word insidious in this post).

Henry running away from Alex at the lakehouse is something that only works if you account for the fact that he is an honest-to-god Prince. His actions in any other scenario are just douchey. Fanfic can get very creative and I'm pretty sure that fanfic writers can come up with alternative ways of making this scenario work even in an AU without him being royalty but it needs to be creative to work.

In the book, this works because Henry is a prince and the one thing that I know about the British Monarchy is that it has a will for self-preservation like no other. So you can sympathise with Henry's position without needing the details. It's also important to realise that the monarchy is not just an institution for Henry it's his family. At some point, he is going to be the son of the reigning monarch abdication or not.

But if you try to spin off an AU in which Henry pulls this stunt except with way more viciousness then you better come prepared to make him GROVEL. It really hurt because apparently people reading this fic were angry with Alex for his understandable vindictiveness something I gleaned from the author's notes on the various chapters and not because I read every comment on the fic so I could be wrong about how people were reacting to the events in the fic but clearly the author believed that the events in the fic would garner hate towards Alex which was literally unbelievable to me. Because predictably it's Alex who takes the first step towards reconciliation and Henry literally does the bare minimum. Reading this fic was so disturbing and disconcerting because I don't think the author even realises that they have set such different standards for Henry and Alex in this fic which made it infinitely worse.

Henry's abandonment of Alex just doesn't work if he isn't burdened by something as powerful as the monarchy and I don't get how that isn't obvious.

The Tumblr post I came across also on a similar note is pretty succinct and I like the point it is making.

But it got me thinking and I realised that Henry's initial rejection of Alex can't be read as Henry rejecting Alex, it has to be read while keeping Alex's lived experience in mind. So no matter what Henry said be it the "get rid of him" version from the book or the "get me out of here" version from the movie, it still can't only be about Alex and Henry it also has to be viewed through the lens of race and class differences that exist between these two. It means that Alex not only has to deal with a person being rude to him he has to deal with the fact that this person is rude to him because of things about him that are a fundamental part of who he is. Of course, that isn't the case here but I don't blame him one bit for jumping to conclusions. Also, in this case, context matters and I like the fact that the movie changed the line because with context Henry's position is much more sympathetic than in the book version of his line (which is incidentally never brought up in the book).

I also like the fact that Henry is the first to contact Alex unlike in the book where Alex gives Henry his number and Henry just decides to use it because it showcases a will to know Alex. Henry makes an effort to give this relationship a chance on his own terms which is something I didn't know I needed. It also means that Alex isn't the only one seen fighting for and wanting this relationship. We have express proof that Henry wants it too with not one but two instances in the movie.

I should probably also tell you that so far I haven't encountered a whole lot of racial bias in fics in this fandom so you are actually pretty safe because I'm pretty sure I have read more than fifty fics in this fandom and not one was insidiously racist. The racism is more observable and notable with how this fandom treats the two actors differently but when I read this one fic and yes so far it is only the one fic that I was tempted to quit in the middle but didn't because by that time it had already become the straw that broke the camel's back and I didn't want to critique something I hadn't read in its entirety.

So, here it is whatever this is. I hope this helps in some way either in validating some people's feelings or alternatively making someone else recognise their own bias.

Thinking about the misery that is Silent Hill: Ascension again. And also consequentially thinking about how fucked up it is that gamers aren’t all staunch anti-capitalists again.

Like, I love video games, and I agree with people who say that they can be art (I may go a little harder on that belief than most, thinking that games should therefore be criticised as art, and that since games are art they therefore don’t always need to be fun or enjoyable to be good. [yes, I’m one of those people]). But if video games are art, than what is true for all other art is also true for video games, in that capitalism is bad for them.

If video games are art, than the Silent Hill franchise deserves so much better. Silent Hill has a huge legacy within the medium, Silent Hill 2 alone is a major source or inspiration for many later works, and a work that had cultural impact much greater than any capitalistic metric focused on sales or profits could ever show.

PT wasn’t even a full game, it was a teaser, and yet it was revolutionary. PT was a trendsetter and a trailblazer that stood as a powerful demonstration of the potential that video games as a medium had for horror as a genre, and for evoking powerful emotional experiences. It is a work that should have been preserved, archived for it’s immense cultural impact, made easily available for everybody who wanted to experience it. And yet, it now exists only on a few old PS4’s that are slowly deteriorating and that are inaccessible to the general public. The only way to get this game now is through piracy and jailbreaking a PS4. If video games are art, than a work as influential and important as PT being inaccessible is unacceptable.

If you truly believe that video games are art, than the current state of the medium should horrify you. No other artistic medium gets so cynically and consistently desecrated as video games do. We may think of this medium as one with immense artistic potential and value, but those who run the industry continue to show that they don’t. Witness what they have done to what was once one of the most important horror properties in the entire medium, it is not just bad and embarrassing, it is symbolic of how those in control of the medium view it. To shareholders and CEO’s, video games are not art, they are content to be cynically produced and consumed, not appreciated. To make money, and nothing else, Silent Hill: Ascension is merely an extremely egregious example of this fact.

As many before me have said, fuck Konami. But if we love this medium, than we have to realise that Konami isn’t the real issue. The real issue is that we live in a system that is actively hostile to art, and a medium as young as video games, and that requires as much effort to create as video games do, is one that is uniquely susceptible to the worst of what art becomes under capitalism. Artistic vision stifled for the sake if profit, bland and inoffensive taking precedence over bold and expressive, profit over creativity, consumerism over preservation and archiving.

Developers, the artists and creatives behind games, are treated horribly. We’ve all read the stories of inhumane crunch conditions and inexcusably cruel abuse that come out of big studios. We all have at least a vague understanding of just how hard being an indie developer is, we’ve all seen the good but flawed games released by double A teams who had to choose between releasing an unfinished game or watching their offices power get shut off. And we’ve watched as more triple A games get released in buggy, unoptimised, and incomplete states because greedy shareholders and corporate entities demanded their profits asap, with no concern for the quality of what was actually being released.

This is by no means a new or uncommon take, but the fact that every issue video games face as a medium, almost every valid complaint that the people who play them make, is unambiguously the result of capitalism cannot be overstated. And it really does beg the question, how do gamers not all become staunch anti-capitalists after seeing the effect this economic system has in their favourite artistic medium?

As an ambitious highschool student, one who knows isn't as less as her grades are, it hits even harder to realise how much the ground level thing really hurt.

Our education system sucks, a statement every student can relate and agree with.

What are really it's faults though?

It's a general postulate that every grand foundation had always been started with good intentions itself. But it's also obvious that things get much messier and bad in their own ways and people find loopholes in the organisation which in long run leads to what we're in today.

Something which was perhaps never even the purpose of what was intended. And that's why it's surely needs a change. It's deprived.

As a highschool student, so far the patterns and changes I've been noticing include more conceptual based questions rather than written parts. In fact even the top universities are taking their own entrance exams consisting of MCQ based questions for the sake of concept itself.

Many new types of questions for example assertion reason based, matching with concepts and soon have been introduced. However, are these enough for the future citizens to live a fulfilling life while expressing their own thoughts rather than simply the material that has been handed down over to them?

While the education system has lately focusing on these concept based questions, one of the most important given exams, that of boards are also taken under the same old answering format.

Answering format has no problem in itself; however the way it's evaluated does raise many issues, limiting the creativity of most of the people, the real analytical thinking required in real world.

What we're never ever taught is expression in itself. Yep. You read it right.

We lack the presentation or more deeply expression part. Our education system qualifying only those who write the bookish language serves as an even big adornment to everything.

Instead of teaching us the ways we can think in, we're simply taught to learn the same thing, in the very same given language.

Yeah sure it must give us a view and even the base of understanding the concept itself but it gets unfair as it comes to those who really understand the concept and see it in their own way.

What's even worse is the fact how society sees grades. Although grades never had the intention of solely judging the whole existence of a human being, over the time they've became the ultimate grading for our worth. Particularly aiming students for obvious reasons.

Some changes I believe could help make the education system much better are listed below in brief points. (You can check out about them in detail with examples in my another blog!)

1. Presentation Skills: Emphasize the importance of helping students present their thoughts and emotions clearly, rather than just focusing on rote memorization.

2. Teacher Improvement: Advocate for better training and strategies for teachers to encourage critical thinking and independent writing among students, ensuring that assessments reflect genuine understanding.

3. Standard of Assessments: Addressing the issue of low standards of the examination papers. The easier the paper, the less capable the students will be as it would never reflect the students' actual capabilities. They should be made to challenge students to raise their overall understanding.

4. Frequent Revisions: Support the idea of regularly updating the education system to address loopholes and prevent corruption, but do so in a way that does not overwhelm students.

5. Incremental Changes: Suggest implementing new formats or changes gradually, starting with one grade and rolling out to subsequent grades to maintain stability and continuity in learning.

6. Addressing Burden on Students: Highlight the negative impact of sudden changes in formats or curricula on students, advocating for a system that evolves thoughtfully over time.

Well so that is that I guess.

I want to amend this.

Sometimes sucking at things is the only way to do things at all.

And it’s almost always better to do things than to do nothing.

Learning to be ok with the discomfort of amateurism and sucking at stuff is not going to work out if you approach it like a temporary situation.

Like, you are not actually comfortable with sucking at stuff if you are only knuckling through the suckage in hopes of no longer sucking in the future. Like, if that sort of belief gets you out there doing stuff, great! But if you, like me, aren’t likely to get significantly better at things by doing them, this motivation is both unsustainable and increasingly bitter.

I’m speaking from experience, as someone who has struggled to develop, let alone improve at, almost all practical and creative skills. Not everyone starts developing from the same place. Even though I can (and do) improve, I have to work harder for anything to stick, and “improvement” will never really lift me out of being bad at stuff. You could say, if the average person starts at 0 when learning a new thing, I start at -50.

A lot of my practice and effort goes into just getting to the point most people start from. So have I improved at stuff? Hell yeah! But when it comes to creative output, that’s… not enough. People don’t see someone going from Unsalvageably Horrible to Still Really Shit to Pretty Bad to Beginner as equally worthy as someone going from Beginner to Intermediate to Advanced to Master. If we are honest, we know that nobody actually cares how much effort someone has put in. If you suck, you suck.

So you gotta get comfortable with the realisation that maybe you will not ever be good at it -and do the thing anyway.

You gotta internalise that half done, shoddily done, amateurishly done, is ALWAYS better than NOT DONE AT ALL. If it’s worth doing it’s also worth doing badly.

The only truly bad art is the art you talked yourself out of trying to make.

Please.

Don’t make your motivation to do stuff dependent on your ability to gain external validation for it. Not now, and not down the line.

Forgive yourself for being bad at stuff.

Experiment

expanding on the lego character

i decided to explore how i can manipulate or interact better with the stencil to create works that best represent what i am investigating, thinking, feeling and more

starting of with just manipulating the positioning of the lego character, whilst also utilising layering to create a visual mixture of textures, objects etc.

i don't know its like the process of creating was just myself getting lost in this canvas, randomly placing the stencil at different angles and allowing the paint (on canvas) pull out the characters features

i didn't pay too much attention to things like overspray, even layering of paint, bubbly marks or scuffs that alter the overall composition

i just took this as a experiment of figuring out how to work with stencil and spray paint but on a higher level

for instance an issue i found was that when applying the spray paint in a continuous movement allowed for a more thicker application of paint whereas a lighter press led to the can almost spitting out the paint causing some parts of the stencil to be filled with lighter spots rather than a full coat

i found that the numerous layering of stencils created this almost glossy texture, however i realised that if i wanted to create a stencil (or the image on the canvas created from the stencil), that holds alot of paint to create a complete even look often or maybe not as often but i did run into issues like excess paint seeping below the stencil and spreading to other parts causing a look that is incomplete ( like the stencil didn't create the grooves or marking of the stencil with the negative and positive space which resulted in either a blob of paint or the stencil being half lego and half full paint)

i then decided to add a smaller stencil to create this size difference and visual contrast, i did a practice stencil to see what works and what doesn't

i then sprayed the stencil onto the canvas

i am pleased with the result, although there are a few things that i would do differently

for instance the process of creating this was longer than i had expected, this was because of having to wait for the canvas or stencil to dry before spraying so rather than using only one stencil i could use maybe two or three and only having one for a specific colour?

another thing i would change is the composition layout, from my eyes there are two heavy focal points aside from the blue stencil, that hold a lot of space and they kind of confine your eyes to these spots

additionally i would probably use different spray cans or tips for these colours as these were hard to work with, i found that the lighter i sprayed the more splatter and the harder i sprayed more clumps of paint (like too much paint causing it to bubble)

overall though this was a informative experiment that has helped me with my creative process and ability

looking at the work again its a very straight forward piece in my opinion, i still feel that this work is continuing to speak on perspective

i feel like the work presents itself as a collection/grouping of people/beliefs/ideas etc. and smack bang in the middle is this smaller, contrasting and more filling stencil of the lego character, i don't know if its this thing where were all headless chickens running round you just gotta stand still and take in or look closely but also i feel like this stand still point could lead to a reading of the chaos around us where this figure is standing alone, almost like its trying to navigate the space around it.

i like the navigating through the space around the figure point, i feel like this is further added to by the fact that the work is reminiscent of those pictures that when staring at a single point, the background begins to blur or transform

Penacony 2nd half spoilers ahead!

The Schrodinger's Butterfly actually managed to catch me off-guard! I think that us not getting an element unlocked while we were at the Luofu helped with that, I didn't think about how we weren't using Harmony Trailblazer against Sunday during the first battle. If we did, I would have picked up on it due to pattern recognition.

Enough time had passed since the first half of the story came out that it took me until Black Swan asking what was off for me to realise that there was no way for us to have met Misha outside of the Dreamscape. The wait was helpful at throwing me off.

Speaking of Misha, his story was... I teared up honestly.

Here's the thing: My boyfriend is a cartoonist. His imagination is this vast, beautiful thing. I'm privileged to be able to listen to him talk about this amazing universe inside his head full of life and hope. It's an experience that I can't explain, to love someone who has something so special and beautiful inside them.

I won't say much here because we like our private life private, but whenever he talks about why he loves what he loves... This last scene comes to mind and hits me so much harder than it would have hit me if we've never met...

This scene is why I cherish my boyfriend's creativity so much. Why I encourage him to pursue his dreams. The legacy that creatives leave in this world after they're gone is one of the most powerful things I've ever seen, and I've been shaken to my very core by so many of these legacies.

I didn't expect something that was this important to me to be approached... Bravo MiHoYo. Bravo. This really felt like a love letter to animation.

(Before anyone says it was so obvious that Misha was Mikhail: I know. I'm half-russian, I know it was glaringly obvious that Misha and Mikhail were related one way or the other, if not the same person, then a close relative relationship like grandson and grandparent or similar. Besides that, I still didn't expect what happened in regards to the revelation of what he actually was and his little speech at the end. But don't worry, yes, I know the Misha/Mikhail thing was very on the nose for slavic people.)

SAM/Firefly has got to be my favourite of the Stellaron Hunters now. She adds more nuance to them. Until her, they felt a lot more villainised even though justified. Silver Wolf's facade was overly insolent, and Blade's cursed existence felt more vengeful than an attempt at balance. Kafka was made to seem to have ulterior motifs from the start that might lead the MC to a bad end. Firefly fought the script, unheard of from them until now. I know it's a cliché but I love me some "more empathetic than the humans themselves" machines as well. Empathy is one of the purest emotions beings can feel for each other. To write a machine that expresses it is to breathe life into said machine, a sentiment that I find beautiful. To give a being that is traditionally non-living the best qualities present in living beings is, in my opinion, the best way to bring them to life.

And of course, there's Boothill.

Which needs no explanation because:

All the social media websites are getting more unusable and un-user friendly by the day, I hate it, I hate it so much, this is awful and I am in fact suffering greatly from it

Stop being awful, why are websites so bad, stop showing me scam ads everywhere, why are bots so prominent, why is everything simultaneously sanitised to hell but exceptions are made for the worst of the worst, why isn’t anything customisable, why can’t I do anything that I want, this is absolute user hell, this is torture for the sake of data harvesting

And yet this is some kind of fucked up reverse prisoners dilemma, I can’t leave because everyone is also trapped here, and if I choose to leave I’ll be free but I’ll be alone, and in the dark about everything. I’ll be in the void. It’s either burning fire pits of content hell with everyone or the cold and lonely expanse of irrelevant nothingness.

These websites are actively harming my mental health. I’ve been catching myself not only thinking about the dumbass "debates" I’ve seen online but even talking to people about them ! As if (!!!) they were(!!!) somehow (!!!) fucking relevant to anything actually real (!!!!!). I don’t want to know ! I just want the bare minimum of good thoughtful interaction ! I want to stay informed on the topics that interest me ! It takes so much work to get even the bear minimum of a curated experience I don’t want the every day controversy or the moronic takes or the fake and fleeting outrages that serves no purpose whatsoever. Please everyone should just learn to shut the fuck up, have some restraint, grow up, get a life ! Nobody’s got a life ?!?

In fact this is Millennial hell. We’ve collectively created and populated these spaces and we are rotting in them, we are festering and oozing out of them, and we are cannibalising them and ourselves simultaneously. This is our generational sin, we were born into the Internet and we made sure to choke it real hard and real good, to extinguish its light and creativity, to chose the shittiest options and blindly accept anything for the sake of recognition, clout. And we’re going to continue doing that because there’s no way we’re moving away from our acid vats we now call social media websites. We’re feeling far too cozy among our own shit and trash, like depressing hoarders who can’t even imagine their house clean anymore not realising they are destroying their living space and sharing it with an unholy number of critters, ready to eat them dead or alive, sooner rather than later.

Maybe we are the critters. But at least they have some kind of use. Our only use is to wallow and do nothing, be depressed and stare, get drained by endless bullshit, and give data, look at ads, be a marketing profile, no need to share anything anymore. Don’t be creative, don’t be weird, don’t act. Just scroll and consume and be artificially angry and react to things you wouldn’t have even noticed otherwise and let it eat through you and install itself in your brain like a true parasite. It whispers to you that you want it and need it. Feed it. Open that app again. What is it, like the 30th time today ? Check again for notes / views / retweets / likes. Nothing hm, better check again ! Better like more harder and faster ! Scroll a bit further ! Click on more buttons made to be scientifically enjoyable and rewarding ! Spin that content wheel !
