Miguel had to admit, he was surprised–he didn’t expect you to carry on like nothing happened.

Most people he’d fucked around with in the past, be it in school or during his tenacious dating life, would stomp their feet and quit whatever club, sport, or job they’d joined just to get close to Miguel, just to get a shot with him. He couldn’t blame them. He always wondered why they thought they’d somehow cement themselves into his life after just one night. 

But then there was you. You, who still sat with Gabi when you had the time. You, who still helped her with her homework, who still listened to her long-winded rants about whatever movie she obsessed over that week, who still got the shy little thing to talk and smile and laugh. It made something weird and thick weigh down Miguel’s chest, like molasses found a way to suffocate him from the outside. Maybe you didn’t deserve to be fucked and forgotten like the rest. 

And he found you there, still, on a day where Gabi was busy with a playdate at the Parker’s household. Maybe this was the best chance he’d get to talk to you again. 

“Alone, huh?” Miguel asked before sitting across from you, a cup of coffee warming his hands. “Kinda sad.”

You sighed and looked out the window, filled to the brim with drama. “You’re tellin’ me. I got abandoned by a kid. This is worse than bein’ stood up, let me tell ya.” 

Yikes. Was what Miguel did the same as standing you up? He wasn’t sure. He didn’t want to think about it too much. 

"Right, right." Miguel cleared his throat and leaned in a little. "About the other night–" 

"What?" You asked, looking a little too dumb for your internship spot suddenly. 

"Halloween." Miguel looked at you meaningfully and your lips pursed slowly, just like the day he first saw you. Miguel gave a tight-lipped smile.

"Let's talk in my office," Miguel said, not offering room for argument or questions as he stood and started walking.

Well, you were supposed to be talking, not blowing him under the desk. Thank god the department heads got their own private spaces. 

One of Miguel's big hands fisted in your hair, holding back your soft locks so he could get a good look at your face as it twisted in concentration. You took him too easily for how big he was, each languid dip of your head welcoming him down your tight, hot throat until–until–

i don't have insider access to the ducks org so this is just my opinion, but... yeah. i think the writing is on the wall here.

#1 : in a recent column, elliotte friedman (most important NHL reporter/insider) wrote:

"Zegras finished with eight points in the last 10 games. This is probably the most fascinating summer decision in the NHL. The Ducks challenged him to show them something when he returned from injury and Zegras did.

But, there’s a nagging sense not everyone’s comfortable with each other here. GM Pat Verbeek is very guarded so it is hard to properly predict what will occur. Anaheim’s got so many good young players who gained great experience."

if elliotte is reporting that "there's a nagging sense not everyone's comfortable with each other here"... that's a big deal. he has one of the biggest platforms in the NHL and he doesn't just say things like that lightly.

during trevor and jamie's contract negotiations in the late summer/early fall, elliotte said on the 32 thoughs podcast that verbeek is a "little ball of hate" and that he has to be careful as he could permanently damage relationships with these players

following that - trevor and jamie were faded out of the ducks media (not nearly as prominent as they used to be), jamie was then traded in january, and there have been constant trade rumors surrounding trevor all season

it's been reported by elliotte and others numerous times that verbeek wanted trevor to learn how to change his playing style/game

#2: during his break up day interview, verbeek stated that he is looking to add a top-4 right-shot defenseman and a top-six right-shot forward this off-season.

it's all well and good to add these players via UFA (meaning you don't have to trade for them), but there aren't many of them available this year, and there's no guarantee that they'll want to sign with the ducks.

additionally, players available in free agency are 27+ years old and are looking for a big money contract - usually with at least 4 years of term

top-4 D and top-6 forward players available via trade are likely to be 24+ (teams don't typically like to trade younger top-6 guys away). this means that if they're restricted free agents, they will need a new contract in a year or two, and will be looking for a big pay day

the ducks might have cap space now, but they'll need to re-sign their aforementioned "so many young good players" eventually (it comes at you fast), so they can't necessarily go crazy with acquiring super expensive guys through trade/free agency without shedding salary elsewhere

#3: as i've written on here before - post 1, post 2 - trevor might not have a clear spot in their depth chart/roster anymore, he's not necessarily a "pat verbeek" type of player, etc.

trevor is a top-six left-shot center who happens to... not play very well on the wing...

to acquire assets in a position of need, you will typically need to give up assets from a position of strength (left-shot center)

#4: yesterday he posted a bunch of pics to insta showing his close relationships with ducks players, including many of the young core/rookies (carlsson, dostal, zellweger). mctavish not included but it's already common knowledge that they're good buds.

in my mind this could be him trying to get ahead of potential "he causes issues in the locker room" type accusations if he does get traded - trying to preemptively prove any rumors that come out about that to be false

a couple weeks ago, cronin said this about trevor:

"Here's a guy that's attractive. The media likes him. The NHL likes him. Whatever those sports games they play, he's on the cover of that. He's a very sociable, likable kid, bounces around. And if you frame that leadership around being great and trying to be excellent every shift, then you're in a win-win situation.

But if you sabotage that by whether you take foolish penalties or you turn pucks over multiple times and end up changing the momentum in the game, then you have to own up to that too. Well, I used to only watch Roland Garros because I didn't have access to Eurosport/Bein Sport and Rafa was the one I watched the most (even if I had a huge crush on Novak when I was much younger) so Rafa came first, then Roger, and Matteo during Wimbledon 2021 and during last year's clay season, I started watching Casper's matchs, and I was like "Ok, I'm adopting him as well.".

RINA! RINA GET IN ‘ERE!!!

An alligator-tailed girl with shaggy brown hair and blue overalls walks her way into the interview room, leaving water where she goes. Given that she’s dripping wet and smells like a bog, it’s likely that she just came by from a swim. She hops up onto the stool provided for her and rests arms between her legs, gripping the top of the stool while kicking her feet back and forth.

“So uh... What’s this about now?”

1. Are you named after anyone?

"I don’t know anybody else named Rina, that’s fer sure! Oh, you must mean my family name! Well o’ course I got the same last name as mah family. It’d be mighty odd if I didn’t!” Rina turns to me and asks, “Did I do that right?” After giving her a thumbs up, she turns back to the interviewer.

2. When was the last time you cried?

“Oh, that’s easy. Yesterday! Had a big ol’ cry. No shame innit.”

3. Do you have kids? Do you have any friends?

“Well yeah, o’ course I got friends! There’s my ma, my pa, Lafayette, Scarlet, Kara, Chloe, uh...” Rina pauses, counting on her webbed fingers. “Eli... I think all my neighbors count... There’s them other gals not from ‘round here too. I think they prefer anonymi... Ana... They like to keep private! So I won’t share their names unless they give me the go ahead.”

4. Do you use sarcasm?

“What’s a sarcasm? Sounds fancy! What can I trade ya for it?” I whisper into Rina’s ear what sarcasm is, and she slaps her knee, chuckling. “Ah gosh dang it, I didn’t know that was a turn o’ phrase! Nah, I don’t use sarcasm! I don’t have a sarcastic bone in my body!”

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

“Their smell. Human folk are really stanky. Mostly sweat, but sometimes they smell a bit more... Salty? Yeah.” Rina sniffs the air, saying, “and you, Mr. Fancypants interviewer smell like shampoo!”

6. What's your eye color?

“Wha? What kinda question is THAT? Of course I know what my own eye color is...” Rina sneakily reaches into a pocket on her overalls, pulling out a very tiny mirror. She slips it back into her pocket, snickering mischievously. “It’s green!”

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

“My ma doesn’t let me watch them scary movies with the screaming ladies on the covers so I wouldn’t know. Even so, why wouldn’t I pick happy endings? Everybody likes happy endings!”

8. Any special talents?

“Let’s see... I can play the banjo! I’m learning to cook from my ma! And uh...” Rina scratches her head. “Is fixin’ things a talent? One time when I was out on this reeeeeal long roadtrip with my buds - which I can’t name - their car broke down and I managed to fix it! Well sorta. It’s more like I realized what was wrong, so we dragged it around until we found this village with these little people with big ol’ BEARDS and, oh, that’s a bit off topic, ain’t it?”

9. Where were you born?

“In Bebop Bayou of course! That bein’ said, I don’t exactly ‘member where I was when I was born... That was a long time ago, you know?”

10. What are your hobbies?

“Fightin’ things, solvin’ problems, helpin’ Lafayette find treasure, and let’s see... Ooh, I like makin’ friends too! That’s a hobby, ain’t it?”

11. Do you have any pets?

“Oh yeah, I got a big ol’ catfish! I feed ‘em all kinds a junk, and he eats it up, too! O’ course this unsettles Big Pete - he’s a catfish guy in the bayou - so I try not to talk about my pet much ‘round him. You know, I heard a long time ago there weren’t always beastfolk like us in the world, and then we just sorta... Appeared! Wild, ain’t it? I don’t understand much about the history of it an all, but I know somethin’ big happened way back when. Like... Poof!”

12. What sports do you play/have played?

“Is fishin’ a sport? Ha, I’m just messin’ with ya! I’ve played rock toss before with my friends in the past. What, don’t know what rock toss is? It’s where ya throw a big ol’ rock around, and ya run with it, and if you cross a line with it, you get a point! Or somethin’ like that. It’s been a while since I played.”

13. How tall are you?

“I’m less than half the size of my ma and pa. I’m still growin’, though! I tell you what, once I grow up like my folks, why, I’ll be the biggest gator in all the bayou!”

14. Favorite subject in school?

“Haha, that’s funny. Nah, we ain’t got a school ‘round here. We tried to fix up an old burnt one outside the bayou, but that... Did not go well last time.”

15. Dream job?

“Wrestler! No, action movie star! Chef? Professional fisher? No no wait, a wrestler movie star that uses fish and cookin’ to beat up the bad guys in their movies!! Ah, this interview was too easy, chief! You gotta come up with harder questions next time!”

As was promised to Rina prior to the interview, I treat her to “free ice cream”. And by “free”, I mean I pay for it. I don’t mind though. After she gets her treat, she wanders back over to the bayou to gloat about how easy it was to get her free ice cream to her friends, who she is certain will be super jealous of her.
