saki: (Uu… How did this happen…?)

zakuro: Averting your eyes and not giving a response is quite rude. Please answer my question. But before that, a word of advice. You should be more careful, your defences are too lax.

saki: I’m sorry, I was caught off guard…

zakuro: Either way I shall not let this chance slip me by. My apologies but I shall be taking advantage of it. Have you remembered anything yet? My little bird of destiny.

-flashback, rehearsal room-

saki: …What do you want from me?

zakuro: As I said, all I want is your memories. The memories sleeping deep within you that were wrapped up in a black cloth and forgotten.

-present, starless hallway-

zakuro: I cannot rely on anyone else but you regarding this matter. Please answer me, for the sake of this pitiful jester.

saki: So you're saying that it's something that I should know? The owner said something similar to me…

zakuro: Oh my oh my, now that is a name that I was not expecting to hear. And whatever was it that the Boss asked of you? It couldn't have been about the black cards, could it?

saki: Yes, it was. He said that I must have one and that I know how to access what’s on them.

Except, I have no idea what any of that means… From what you're saying though, I should know, right? Why do you want to know what it is that I’ve forgotten, Zakuro-san?

zakuro: Oop, and now I’m the one being questioned. However I cannot provide a response if you do not remember.

If you wish for something then you must also give something in return. A fair trade is most important when it comes to both information and compensation.

-qu appears-

qu: Hey, Zakuro. What are you doing blocking the hallway?

zakuro: What's this, what's this? My dear teammate has decided to make an appearance. And if it isn't Team P’s problem child as well.

menou: Problem child? Are you referring to me? I’m not so sure about that. I’d be a saint in comparison to you.

Though, I am curious what you two were talking about just now. A singer is necessary to perform on Starless’ stage, so if I were to give you something in return, would you continue to sing for me forever?

zakuro: Please forgive me. I already have my hands full pleasing our madman of a leader. I don't need another one giving me orders.

menou: Huh~? Working for me would be so much easier compared to Mokuren though. Well whatever, I already have Maica, Sinju and Rindou on Team P to sing for me. Rindou seems like he’s still holding himself back. I want him to cut the breaks already.

zakuro: Woah now, as expected of you Menou. What an insane statement to make.

qu: Give it a rest and back away from her already, Zakuro. You're being way too persistent.

zakuro: Oh my, excuse me. The little birdie here is so used to my closeness that she hadn't pushed me away. 

-he steps even closer to saki- 

zakuro: Please remember what it is that I desire from you. I beg of you, remember for both of our sakes.

-locker room-

ran: Heya Sinju, how is Team P doin’? Gettin’ worked to the bone?

sinju: I wouldn't say that. We're just diligently training and rehearsing. Wait, are you trying to pick on me, Ran?

ran: Ahaha oops, you saw right through me~ Ya I was just teasin’ ya. 

Don't ya think P is like a sports drama straight outta the showa era right now? I’ve always thought that the sports and idol genres would go together well!

sinju: I’m not exactly sure what you're trying to say, but I’m glad you seem to be having fun… I think?

ran: What's gonna happen to P from here on out? We were talkin’ about it the other day. Are ya gonna change your direction from bein’ sparkly idols? 

Oh and also, is Rindou ok? He’s still always wearin’ a smile, but it's like his resolve has changed.

sinju: His resolve–

-flashback, rehearsal room-

rindou: I want to create a new Team P.

-present, locker room-

ran: He’s got that ‘come any closer and I’ll cut you down!’ vibe to him. It's so cool, like the samurai Tange Sazen!

sinju: I’m seriously not following this conversation at all. But Rindou is fine. I’m the one who's at fault, I still don't know what it is that I want to do. I don't know what direction Rindou is planning to take with Team P.

ran: What? Ya seriously think that he seems ok? Y’know, before I came to Starless, I saw all sorts of broken people on the daily. And surprisingly, it's the ones that were closest to ‘em that understood them the least. 

Shouldn't you be treatin’ this a little more carefully? The same thing happened once before, right? Ya told me yourself, about that time Nekome did some kinda therapy thing.

sinju: You remembered that, Ran?

ran: Of course I’d remember! It was such a weird story. What was it again… 

Rindou hadn't been able to perform, so Nekome put a set of headphones or somethin’ on him? Rindou went all uwaahh! and collapsed, but despite that he took to the stage the next day like nothin’ had happened. 

Maybe ya should try give him that therapy again? Though I don't really understand the details.

sinju: Don't say that like it's so simple. There's no way I could tell Rindou to do that again. 

sinju: …….

SideA Chapter 5

-starless hallway-

qu: Are you on floor shift today, Yoshino?

yoshino: Yeah. I suppose you are too. Is something the matter?

qu: Team P don't have an understudy, so I was wondering if I should offer to lend them some support.

yoshino: Ah… Is this about Rindou? I understand why you’d be concerned but… It's a difficult situation.

The current Team P is different from the one that we used to be members of. They all have their own challenges that they need to overcome themselves.

So I’m not sure how much help we’d be, since we only know about how P used to be.

qu: I know that, but still.

yoshino: Qu, a lot of time has passed since we transferred from Team P. I get that seeing Rindou like this is reminiscent of how he was when P was first created. But the current Team P has their own way of doing things, if we try to intervene we’d just be a disruption.

qu: You think so?

-sinju appears further down the hall-

yoshino: It's not like anyone from P has directly asked you for help, right?

sinju: What's this? What are we talking about?

yoshino: Woah, Sinju! That surprised me.

sinju: Were you talking about Team P? …Was it something I shouldn't have overheard?

yoshino: You mean something we want to keep a secret from you? That may be true.

sinju: Huh? Seriously? I’m so curious~ But I can't ask!

yoshino: It's a secret but I can let you in on it if you want.

qu: Yoshino.

yoshino: We were just talking about how Team P are really giving it their all. Weren't we, Qu?

sinju: Really? Aw, thanks! I’ve been worried about whether or not I’ve been doing well, so I’m happy to hear it.

yoshino: So are things going well on P? You seem to be trialing a lot of different things.

sinju: Yeah, we’ve been doing things a little differently compared to before. As to whether or not it's going well I’d say…

sinju: ……. (frowns)

qu: Is it like that time at the previous Starless?

sinju: Ah, you might be right. Did somebody say that to you?

qu: No, it's just the feeling that I got. A lot happened back then, so I might just be overthinking it. Sorry, Sinju.

sinju: No, don't worry about it. I’m sorry too. I was wondering if I should discuss it with Nekome.

yoshino: Why Nekome? Oh right, of the current P members, only Nekome was also a standard member back then. But, this is Nekome we're talking about here. I wouldn't expect too much from him.

sinju: Yoshino.

yoshino: If you need to talk we’re willing to hear you out too. Right, Qu?

qu: Of course. The offer is always on the table, Sinju. We were all founding members of P after all.

sinju: Yoshino, Qu… Thank you. If I need anything I’ll let you know.

yoshino: He may not be very reliable but I think you should still discuss it with Nekome too.

sinju: Ahaha, yeah. I’ll try talking with him.

SideB Chapter 4

-locker room-

nekome: Rindou, you took your time getting here today~ I thought you’d arrive earlier.

rindou: That's because I had to stop by the government office first. I still got here on time though.

nekome: Yeah, the others should be arriving soon too, but before that I wanted to talk to you, so I’ve been waiting.

rindou: Sure, we can talk after rehearsal.

nekome: Could we talk now instead? It won't take long.

rindou: …Ok. What is it?

nekome: Say, Rindou. You're taking to the stage at the moment, but is it really sustainable? This has happened in the past, remember, that period of time when you couldn't bring yourself to perform.

rindou: I was wondering what you were going to say… I’m standing on the stage just fine though. This is different from back then.

nekome: But still, it feels as though you're pushing yourself. So wouldn't it be better to look after yourself with some treatment?

rindou: Treatment?

nekome: You don't remember? That treatment that I gave you back at the previous Starless.

rindou: Oh… That thing you called ‘simple therapy’...

nekome: Yeah. And it really was simple, wasn't it?

rindou: I think it was. To be honest I don't really remember the details. I’d rather not remember that period of time. I was in total disarray. So, I am at least somewhat grateful to you.

In the end it was thanks to whatever you gave me that I was able to stand on the stage comfortably again. However, this time I will have to refuse.

nekome: Are you sure?

rindou: I think that this is something that I need to overcome on my own. Thank you for your concern though. Also, if you can up the quality of your performance for me then I won't have any complaints.

nekome: So harsh!

rindou: Is that all then? Rehearsals will be starting soon, we need to get changed.

nekome: Got it. Just one last thing. Would you happen to have a black coloured card in your possession? A black card with nothing written on it.

rindou: Why do you know about that, Nekome…?

nekome: As long as you have it it's fine. I just wanted to make sure. With that I’m gonna go get changed~

-nekome leaves-

rindou: That black coloured card… If I remember correctly it was back when Starless caught on fire that I found it in my locker. Nekome was also found caught up in that fire the day he returned…

SideB Chapter 5

-break room-

kasumi: What's this? Heath and Taiga? Now that's an unusual pair~

heath: We were talking about Team P’s show and how it's pretty amazing they've still been making adjustments to the show since it opened.

kasumi: Ah~ Yeah it does seem that way. Their whole team is made up of diligent members after all.

heath: Huh? But Nekome is with them, so it's not the whole team.

taiga: That's true.

kasumi: Well I’m sure Nekome can be diligent sometimes too~ …Probably.

heath: Seriously? Then compared to Hari, who would be more diligent?

kasumi: Hari of course. That's an unfair comparison no matter who the opponent is.

taiga: He took some kind of exam recently, didn't he? That fact alone makes him crazy diligent.

heath: I hate exams.

taiga: Agreed~ I don't see the point in taking one willingly.

kasumi: Some professions require you to take exams in order to gain the needed qualifications.

heath: Hm? Qualifications, huh~

taiga: He sure is amazing.

kasumi: You two could try to act at least a little interested. Passing the bar examination is pretty impressive.

taiga: Do you have any qualifications yourself? You seem like you’d have some unexpected skills. No wait, lemme try and guess. Uhh, what about a qualified cleaner?

kasumi: I suppose there are certification tests for things like building cleaning. I’ve never taken one before though.

heath: Do you have qualifications in managing people?

kasumi: Like human resources and general affairs? Oh, or a licensed social insurance consultant? Nope, I don't have any qualifications like that~

taiga: Huh, I thought you'd have at least something.

heath: I guess Kasumi is normal after all.

kasumi: I have my drivers license though. I even have a large vehicle license.

heath: Oh, that's pretty cool. That means you can drive trucks and things right?

taiga: That's awesome! Can you operate a forklift too?

kasumi: Yep, I have a forklift license too. They're essential for moving heavy objects.

heath: Do you use them at work?

kasumi: I haven't used one since coming to Starless. I’m basically only a license holder on paper. If I were to return to a job that uses one I’d have to take a short course beforehand to remember everything~

taiga: With the existence of short courses and exams this world really is a tough one.

kasumi: Ahaha, that's society for you.

Common Chapter 4

-starless office-

unei: Nekome-san, should you really be here right before your show starts?

nekome: I heard Saki-chan was here so I wanted to greet her before the show. we’ll be heading right back don't worry.

saki: Thank you. But you didn't have to greet me, you should go and get ready for your show!

nekome: Aw come on, don't brush me off so easily~ I just wanted to have my heart warmed up before I stepped onto that awfully cold stage.

maica: Hmm, is that really the case? Then how about I set a fire to warm you up then?

rindou: While it is true that Saki-san is a special guest, I feel as though the way you dote on her has ulterior motives, Nekome.

nekome: N-no~~? It's not that way at all, I’m just, y’know?

unei: How come you suddenly can't speak properly?

rindou: My apologies, Saki-san. Nekome, you can't be bothering her like that. Keep it in moderation.

Maica, I’m going to go ahead and check the stage equipment before we start. I’ll leave him to you.

maica: Ah, sure. Go ahead.

-rindou leaves-

nekome: Hm? Is Maica going to scold me next then?

maica: (sigh) I’m not going to scold you, you're an adult too after all.

nekome: I kinda can't stand this tension anymore…

maica: You're the one who brought it on yourself, so you have to deal with the consequences. But still, quit half heartedly poking fun at things. Rindou won't play along, his responses have been really cold and it’ll only make the mood even more stifling. 

nekome: So it's ok if I poke fun wholeheartedly then?

maica: If you want to get punched, sure.

nekome: Ah. No thanks.

saki: Um, what are you talking about?

maica: Hm? Oh, it's nothing. It's P’s problem to deal with. Rindou’s just been fully absorbed in the stage, that's all. To the extent that he's been discussing things with the team less…

nekome: Or to put it frankly he hasn't been talking to us any more than he needs to. He doesn't talk about anything other than the stage. Though he is still friendly about it.

unei: Aren't Team C and K the same way? B is the only team where I get the impression that they're a big group of friends.

nekome: That may be true but he could crack a joke every now and then. The moment he opens his mouth it's just stage this, show that. It gets dull, y’know?

maica: And that's why you keep cracking jokes only for Rindou to ignore them and make the mood freeze over even more?

nekome: I was only trying to warm things up.

maica: Well it didn't work.

unei: Being ignored by Rindou-san sounds like it'd be terrifying. If I got brushed off whilst he was still wearing a smile I think I’d be sad. The reviews for your show have been really good though. They're praising that it's a heart wrenching tragedy.

maica: A heart wrenching tragedy? Where on earth is that interpretation coming from?

nekome: Since Rindou is concentrating on the show the quality of his performance is scarily high. I’m worried as to whether or not he can keep going like this.

saki: (I wonder if Rindou-san is ok…)

SideA Chapter 6

-park, day-

nekome: Sorry for the wait, Sinju~ What is it that you wanted to talk about? I’m a little nervous since you said we couldn't talk at Starless.

sinju: Nekome. Do you remember how I used to always try and avoid you? Back at the old Starless building.

nekome: Ahh, yeah I remember that. It was like you suddenly couldn't stand being around me anymore. We spoke about how it was just a misunderstanding though didn't we?

sinju: Yeah, but I didn't tell you the reason for why I acted that way.

nekome: That's cause you didn't look like you wanted to elaborate. I don't mind either way, things are fine between us now after all. Unless you want to explain?

sinju: Yeah, I do. You see, I saw what you did. Back then when Rindou was struggling to stand on the stage.

nekome: (surprised)

-flashback, old starless back rooms-

sinju: (That was a close one, I’m so glad I found my house key here in the store. That could’ve been real bad if I’d dropped it on the street somewhere… Hm? Is someone else here?)

-sinju peeks into the storage room-

nekome: Well, I guess you could say it’s a simple type of therapy?

rindou: Sorry Nekome, I’ve even made you concerned about me…

nekome: No worries, to make sure Team P’s on the right track, you’re necessary no matter what, Rindou.

nekome: (on computer or something) Ok, the card’s all set up, how about you?

rindou: I’m fine.

sinju: (Nekome and… Rindou? I wonder what they’re doing… he said something about therapy.)

nekome: Here we go, put these headphones on now.

rindou: Ok.

nekome: Okay, concentrate real hard on the sound that’s gonna come from the headphones, I’ll start it now.

sinju: (I wonder what they could be talking about, a new show maybe? I wish I could listen in too but I’m just the understudy…)

-rindou jolts in pain-

rindou: Guh— graaahhhh!

sinju: !?

nekome: …Hm?

sinju: (What was that? What, what happened? Nekome noticed me, shit, I need to run…!)

-present, park, day-

nekome: Huh, so that had been you, Sinju. I thought I’d just imagined hearing someone.

sinju: …….

nekome: So after seeing that you were afraid of me.

sinju: After you did that, Rindou stopped being so unstable and settled down. But on the flipside, I was the one who got scared and Rindou staggered our shifts because of it.

nekome: I just thought you wanted to avoid interacting with me. A lot was going on back then so I didn't really have time to let it concern me.

sinju: Not long after that, you disappeared.

nekome: Yeah. I’m sorry about that too.

sinju: Nekome. About that therapy, do you think you could do it once more?

nekome: Are you seriously suggesting that?

sinju: If Rindou needs it then…

nekome: I can't do it right now. Certain conditions need to be met and I don't have all the necessary equipment. Not to mention– I’ve already talked to Rindou about it and he said that he didn't need it.

sinju: If Rindou said that he's fine, then he must be, right?

nekome: Yeah, he's fine. He’s different from how he was back then, it was a long time ago after all.

sinju: Yeah. I’m sure he'll be fine. As long as we perform the show as best as we can, we'll be fine.

nekome: Yep, our show just keeps getting better and better. Let's keep doing our best until the closing show.

sinju: Thank you for hearing me out.

nekome: So… Does that therapy not freak you out anymore?

sinju: You just said it yourself, things are different compared to back then, it was a long time ago. I was scared at the time, that's true but…

I can remember it now, the fact that not being able to stand on the stage is what was causing Rindou to suffer the most. So, that's why I think that what you did back then was necessary to help Rindou.

SideB Chapter 6

-starless back rooms-

rindou: Taiga? What are you doing back here?

taiga: What, you ask? I’m just hanging out with laptop-chan. Sometimes we like to play here.

rindou: Hm, is that so?

taiga: Yeah, you don't look the least bit interested. Oh well, everyone has their own preferences. To be honest I’m running from Unei-kun. He’d catch me if I stayed in the office. 

That guy keeps casually asking me to format SD cards but then after I finish doing so he’s suddenly like ‘wait no I need that data!’. Ah~ It's so scary, I can't believe it sometimes. Those who can't handle technology are so difficult. 

I’m the most knowledgeable when it comes to machines here at Starless though so it's no wonder everybody has to rely on me~

rindou: …That's true actually.

taiga: Uwah, I said too much. Was I acting like an otaku? I totally was.

rindou: Say, Taiga. Could you lend me your abilities as well?

taiga: Huh? You have a favour to ask of me? Now that's a rare event.

rindou: I’d like for you to keep this a secret from Nekome, but could you analyse this card for me?

-rindou hands taiga his black card-

taiga: Huh, this card is completely black. What is it?

rindou: I don't know. It randomly appeared in my locker one day… I previously had Maica try to look into it but in the end nothing came of it. I’m still curious as to what it is though, so.

taiga: Hmm? This is surprising. And how come I need to keep it a secret from Nekome?

rindou: I’m not entirely sure myself. Nekome might not have anything to do with it, but I’d like to keep it a secret from him just in case.

taiga: Hmmm. Sure, I’ll give it a shot. It's not like Nekome and I talk much to begin with, so it's not like I need to report it to him. Is it ok if I borrow this card?

rindou: Yes, I don't mind. All I was doing with it was holding onto it. But make sure you don't lose it, if you can't find out anything about it please return it to me.

-flashback, haseyama’s hospital room-

suspicious man: It's not here…? You haven't hidden it have you?

doctor: Of course not, I’m telling the truth…! I checked his clothes, his bag, everything! There wasn't a black coloured card anywhere.

suspicious man: Shit. Just when I thought I was finally gonna be able to obtain a black card…

-present, starless back rooms-

taiga: Of course. I’ll be taking it off your hands for a few days then~ Just give me some time until the closing performance of your show.

rindou: Ok. I’ll be counting on you.

taiga: Do your best on the stage.

rindou: Of course. I will not compromise.

-rindou leaves-

taiga: Uegh, is it just me or did it suddenly get chilly in here? Rindou seems so on edge lately.

-takami appears-

takami: So this is where you were, Taiga. Running away again are you?

taiga: Running? Oh, you mean from Unei-kun? Yeah, I did. Just how many SD cards does that man have? Confirming what's on them, or telling me to format them whilst checking the data. Just where is he even getting these tasks from?

takami: The owner, I suppose.

taiga: Ah, there's no way he could refuse him then. However, I am refusing. I’m not doing it.

takami: Taiga, that card you have…

taiga: Ah, crap, I forgot to put it away. Oh well, you're not my brother. Rindou gave it to me, he wants me to analyse it for him.

takami: Rindou gave it to you?

taiga: He told me to keep it a secret from Nekome. So you should do the same. Anyways, I should go and get ready for my shift.

takami: A-ah, yeah sure.

-taiga leaves-

takami: A black card… Why would Rindou have one?

saki: (What was that? Perhaps I’m not feeling too good…)

saki: Maybe I was just imagining things…

-starless lobby-

sinju: Oh, welcome, Saki-chan. I’m glad I was able to greet you, I’m happy to see you!

saki: Hello, Sinju-san. 

sinju: You look pale, are you ok? You should rest backstage for now. Aogiri, could you give me a hand? Saki-chan doesn't seem to be feeling well.

aogiri: Of course, I can assist.

-flashback, hallway-

aogiri: I knew that the chances of you remembering would be very low but— It would be helpful if you remembered. Don't worry, I’ll assist you.

-present, starless lobby-

saki: (Huh…? I think I really am feeling under the weather…)

aogiri: It's ok, there's no need to push yourself. I’ll escort you backstage. Let's go so the other customers don't notice.

-flashback, restaurant area-

aogiri: Speaking of, I was going to go and check what's happening behind the scenes. Would you like to come with me? Here, follow me quietly so the other customers don't notice.

-present, starless lobby-

-kokuyou quickly steps in front of aogiri-

kokuyou: Are you feeling dizzy? Does your head hurt? Or are you not even sure yourself…

gui: Kokuyou, Aogiri. I will take her.

aogiri: I’ll head backstage before you then, I’m about to be on break.

-aogiri leaves-

kongou: I’ll prepare you something hot to drink. I’ll leave the rest to you, Gui, Kokuyou.

-kongou leaves-

sinju: Kokuyou, I’ll also–

kokuyou: You have a show to perform, don't you? Don't forget.

sinju: Saki-chan…

saki: I’m ok. Do your best in the show, Sinju-san.

sinju: Ok, thank you. Don't overdo it either.

-sinju leaves-

gui: Let's go, Kokuyou.

kokuyou: I’ll join you later, you take Saki.

-black screen-

saki: (I feel so dizzy– It’s not going away…)

-time pass, starless office-

kongou: Ah, you're awake. How are you feeling?

gui: I think she's ok. I can tell by her scent.

saki: Yes, I’m feeling better. Sorry for worrying you all…

aogiri: Here is the hot lemonade Kongou made for you, would you like to drink it?

saki: (flinches) Ah, um… Yes, thank you.

kokuyou: Here I’ll pass it to her. Take it, Saki.

aogiri: It appears I surprised you, my apologies, Saki-san. Sorry for bothering you too, Kokuyou.

kokuyou: I don't care, but the hall is probably understaffed right now. You should return Aogiri. You too, Gui.

aogiri: Understood.

gui: I’m staying here.

kokuyou: Tch. Fine.

aogiri: I’ll be taking my leave then. Take care, Saki-san.

-aogiri leaves-

gui: Saki, Aogiri made you flinch.

kokuyou: Did that guy do something to you?

saki: No, at least I don't think so… 

-flashback, hallway-

aogiri: It would be helpful if you remembered. Don't worry, I’ll assist you.

-present, starless office-

saki: I don't really remember.

kokuyou: Is that so? Well for now just make sure you rest up.

saki: (I feel as though I’ve forgotten something…)

gui: P’s show has ended. I can hear the sound of applause.

kokuyou: Sounds like another great success. How praiseworthy.

Writer Sign-Ups are now open for the Rusty Quill Big Bang 2024!

Please read through the information carefully to understand what will be expected of you as a participant.

You do not need to have decided what you will be writing at this stage, but please consider whether the fic requirements are compatible with what you have in mind, and be sure that you can commit to contacting us on the below deadlines to share your progress (or withdraw your participation if necessary).

Participation Requirements:

You must choose whether to join the Big Bang as an artist or writer. You may not do both.

Writers will require an AO3 account; if you do not have an AO3 account, please request one via AO3’s login page.

If you wish to write M or E rated fics you must be aged over 18.

All participants must read and adhere to the Expected Conduct guidelines (see below).

Minimum Final Word Count: 20,000

Maximum Number of Fics per Writer/s: 1

Maximum Number of Writers per Fic (collaboration): 2

Fic Draft Requirements: At the draft deadline (August 18th), we will require a complete draft of at least 18,000 words. “Complete” means that the fic is written from start to finish with no indispensable scenes missing or left as outlines—think, “If I posted this right now, would I be happy with the story it tells?”

Ideally, you will refine and polish your draft in the remaining time, but it can also be your final draft if you prefer.

Drafts will be handed in via a form that will be sent out to you before the deadline. Drafts should be available in Google docs, or if need be in PDF format.

Summary Requirements: A form for the summary will be sent out to you before the deadline. Summaries should briefly outline the general premise, and include rating, ships, triggers and other warnings, and any other relevant details.

Eligible Fics:

Fics of any rating and with any warnings are permitted, as long as they meet the minimum word count (20,000), are centered around at least one Rusty Quill original podcast (The Magnus Archives, The Magnus Protocol, Rusty Quill Gaming, Stellar Firma, Inexplicables, Chapter & Multiverse, Trice Forgotten, Cry Havoc!, Neon Inkwell), and are tagged appropriately.

We encourage authors to take this opportunity to challenge themselves to take on a project that they might not otherwise—though please consider what is realistic in terms of the deadlines as well!

Fics must be stand-alone (requires no knowledge of previous fics to enjoy), complete (resolves all main plotlines within the story, as opposed to being part I of a trilogy, etc.), and previously unposted.

Crossovers are allowed, but the focus should be on the RQ podcast involved. For example: a fusion crossover with the Leverage Team replacing the LOLOMG in the RQG!verse would not be permitted, though the RQG characters in the Leverage!verse would be.

Please be aware that fics with obscure crossovers, common squicks, higher ratings, etc., may be more difficult to match, and thus take a little longer to get snapped up. We will do our best to find you a suitable match, though!

If you have any questions about the suitability of your fic, please contact the mods.

Matching Process:

The artist sign-up will include a list of the anonymised fic summaries. Each artist will select 3 fics which they would be interested in creating for, with additional preferences (favourite show/shows they do not follow, OTPs and NoTPs, Do Not Wants, etc.) indicated in the comment field. Mods will then match writers to artists, taking preferences into account as much as possible.

If fics are oversubscribed or if it is otherwise necessary for matching, they may be removed from the list of eligible fics before the end of artist sign-ups.

If you have an issue with your match, please let the mods know as soon as possible.

Do Not Wants:

In this event, you will have an opportunity to Do Not Want (DNW) the types of content that you do not wish to work on. Similarly, if you’ve had conflicts with certain people in the past and do not want to risk matching to them, you can include this in your sign-up or draft submission, and we will avoid matching you with them (details of these will not be shared beyond the mod team).

The mods will always account for DNWs within reason; however, attempts to manipulate matches via DNWs or otherwise acting in bad faith will result in the rejection of your sign-up or draft. We are also not private detectives, and will thus not be fielding any requests such as “do not match me with anyone who has ever drawn/written XYZ.” Please keep that in mind when considering whether this event is right for you.

Expected Conduct:

By signing up for this event, you agree to do your best to meet the deadlines. If you might need a little more time, please email the mods to explain your situation before the deadline passes. Those who miss deadlines without contacting the mods beforehand may be dropped from the event without further contact.

In order to participate in this event, you must be willing to contact the mods directly in the event that you have a question, concern, or issue with your participation (as in the deadline example above). We are happy to help participants with anything that arises, but cannot accept “telephone”-style communiques on behalf of others.

Be in regular contact with your match—if you’re going to be offline for a significant length of time, let them know. Radio silence from your match in events of this kind can be very concerning. (If you are having trouble getting in touch with your match, please contact us!)

Please take care to credit your artist/writer in your own final post.

Our Discord server has its own list of rules, which are listed within the server. If you decide to join the server, we require you to read and abide by those rules.

Be kind and courteous towards your match and fellow participants. This naturally means that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are prohibited, but even where those are not at play, you are expected to treat others with respect.

We, like Rusty Quill, have an “all headcanons are valid” policy. Harassment or mockery of those with different interpretations will not be tolerated. This does not mean you cannot discuss how you see the characters with others or that your artist/writer should not take it into account at their discretion, but insistence that any one interpretation must be adhered to is not allowed.

If you have concerns that a work or participant may be in violation of the rules, please bring it to the mods directly. Harassment of other participants (including but not limited to callout posts, name-calling, baiting, etc.), either publicly or in the Piles of Nonsense discord server, over their identities, fanworks, or headcanons will result in an instant default.

Peter Capaldi interview: 'I'm Doctor Who, how did that happen?'

In his first interview since being given the keys to the Tardis, Peter Capaldi reflects on how he came to fulfill his childhood dream

Peter Capaldi begins with an apology. He is sorry that the last time we met – on the Prague set of The Musketeers, BBC1’s adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas stories – he was obliged to be, as the late MP Alan Clark once famously put it, “Economical with the actualité”.

In spite of repeated Paxman-esque quizzing by me about what he was doing next, Capaldi had made like Michael Howard in consistently refusing to answer my questions.

The reason he was so resolute in rebuffing me was, of course, that he was sworn to secrecy about his next role. Only a handful of people in the whole universe knew that Capaldi was about to take on possibly the most sought-after part in British TV drama: Doctor Who. He was not even able to tell his own daughter the good news. So the actor would undoubtedly have been lined up in front of a firing squad of exterminating Daleks if he had spilt the beans to me.

Fortunately, we can both laugh about it now. “Yes, well, the last time we were talking I knew I couldn’t say anything!” Capaldi grins wryly by way of apology. “You were asking me all these questions about what I was doing next, and I had to just sit there and say nothing!”

He carries on that, “It was a fantastic piece of knowledge to have, but it was getting tiring lying to people all the time!” The fact that the information acquired the aura of a state secret only serves to underline the sheer magnitude of the show.

We are meeting at “DWHQ”, the nerve centre of the “Whoniverse,” the BBC’s Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff, where they film the show. You are greeted at reception by a Dalek, perhaps a chilling reminder of what the fate that awaits you if you reveal any spoilers.

Capaldi is just as you would hope. He is much warmer, but just as sharp as the character for which he was previously best-known, the exhilaratingly foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It. Today he is sporting “electric shock” greying hair, grey trousers and a white T-shirt with an arty design that could have been lifted straight from an indie band’s album cover. The Scottish actor gives off a force field of charisma that may well be visible on the furthest edge of the galaxy. He twinkles like Regent Street during Christmas week.

At 56, Capaldi is the joint-oldest (with the first Doctor, William Hartnell) of the 12 main actors to be handed the Tardis keys, but he exudes a youthful exuberance that would shame performers half his age. The fact that Capaldi is of a certain age meant that many people were taken by surprise when he was announced last summer as the new Time Lord. But having watched his opening episode, “Deep Breath”, which goes out on BBC1 next Saturday, I can see exactly why the show-runner Steven Moffat went for his fellow Scot.

In this feature-length story, the Doctor and his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman) battle a dastardly foe in Victorian London. But, more than that, the episode is about Clara’s attempts to come to terms with a very different manifestation of the Doctor. His relationship with her has changed, but it is still at the heart of the piece and continues to be what makes this alien so human.

Capaldi’s Time Lord is angrier, edgier and spikier than more recent versions. At one point, he is at the helm of the Tardis, and Clara asks, “Where are we going?” “Into darkness,” he replies.

The actor himself describes his Doctor as, “More mysterious and not as user-friendly” as some of the recent incarnations. He may be darker, stranger and more alien, but my diagnosis of Capaldi’s Doctor is that he’s immensely compelling and will be a big hit with viewers of all ages.

Over the subsequent 31 years, the actor has shown tremendous versatility. He has played everything from the nicest man on the planet in Local Hero, to the nastiest man on the planet in The Thick of It and its movie version, In the Loop.

The actor sums up his career thus: “I was recently doing a voiceover for butter and they said, ‘Can you be a little less sinister?’ So that’s how far it’s gone. I’ve gone from an amiable geek in Bill Forsyth films to a ‘sinister’ butter salesman.”

Relatively late in his career, Capaldi now has a seriously high profile. Despite that, he laughs off the idea that he might decamp to LA: “Hollywood producers aren’t going to say, ‘Get me that swearing, grey-haired, headless chicken. We need him for our new High School Musical movie!’”

For all his memorable past roles, Doctor Who is special to Capaldi. He is happy to admit that he has been a “Whovian” his entire life. He jokes that the last time he got to play the Time Lord was as a nine-year-old in the playground. As an eager 15-year-old in February 1974, he wrote to the Radio Times praising the magazine for its coverage of Doctor Who. Now, 40 years later, the fan boy has fulfilled his childhood dreams.

Capaldi, who is married to the actress and TV producer Elaine Collins and has a grown-up daughter, confesses that, “I was totally geeky. But when you reach the age of 17 or 18, you move on and discover sex and drugs and rock’n’roll. I’m ashamed to say I had a kind of bonfire of the vanities. I had a huge collection of Doctor Who books, autographs and pictures, but I threw them all away to go and drink lager and eat curries. That was silly, wasn’t it?” He adds that, “I wish I’d known that one day the geek would inherit the Earth.”

But he did not abandon his first love forever. Capaldi, also a notable director who won an Oscar in 1995 for making the short film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, says that, “I grew up with Doctor Who, The Beatles, Sunday Night at the London Palladium, school milk, bronchitis, smog, S buckle belts and all that stuff, so Doctor Who is part of my DNA. Although one goes away, now the Prodigal Son returns!”

There is no doubting the authenticity of his passion for all things Whovian. “It’s a very unusual story that somebody who was so into it would end up playing this role. It was such an unlikely event that I never considered it happening to myself. There are things I get excited about that only a fan boy could get excited about. I don’t need any help with the backstory.

“Even if I’d never played Doctor Who, as a kid, that’s what formed me as an actor rather than going to the Royal Shakespeare Company or doing Chekhov. It taught me to be an actor. I hope it’s all inside me, and it comes up.”

One other characteristic that Capaldi’s Doctor exhibits is a childish glee – which mirrors the emotions he experienced when he first heard he had won the role he had been coveting. The actor, who lives in North London, recalls that, “I was in Prague doing The Musketeers, and I read in the paper that Matt [Smith] was leaving. I just thought I wasn’t in that race at all. I thought the role was going to keep going in a younger direction.”

When the producers were making the final decision about the new Doctor, Capaldi remembers, “I was shooting as Cardinal Richelieu, so my phone had to be off. But I checked it, and I had nine messages. My agent finally got through and said, ‘Hello, Doctor.’ I went into the corner, I couldn’t tell anyone. I had to be very quiet.” He does admit, though, that, “When I was walking around Prague on my own, I was singing the Doctor Who theme tune to myself.”

If you take on the role of Doctor, you are also taking on some of the most dedicated fans this side of Planet Gallifrey. But Capaldi, who appeared as a Roman sculptor in a 2008 episode of Doctor Who entitled “The Fires of Pompeii”, says he is not bothered by the aficionados’ intense devotion to the show. “Doctor Who is so big, from the start I thought, ‘Don’t get involved in what people say.’ You simply do your best. Then it goes out into the world and you know that whether most people like it or not, somewhere someone loves you, and will always love you. The more everyone else hates you, the more they’ll love you! ‘He was my Doctor’, they’ll say.”

Capaldi goes on to ponder just why the show, first broadcast on BBC1 the night after President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, has lasted so long. “It’s got monsters in it. And they can change the leading actor. As Steven [Moffat] says, ‘If every show could do that, they’d all last a lot longer.’ Also, although it’s a sci-fi show, to me there’s an aspect of Grimm’s fairytale about it. The Doctor takes you deep into the forest where there are monsters, but he will return you to safety in the end. I think that colour in it is very potent, and it appeals to a family audience.

“Doctor Who has within it some of the cornerstones of the human psyche. He dies and is reborn. That’s a potent idea. It’s a show that young people can watch in which they are confronted with death, but in a way which is not grief-stricken.”

Finally, Capaldi pauses to reflect on his continuing sense of wonderment about Doctor Who, which has stretched from his earliest childhood to the present day. “I’m constantly amazed that it is me playing this role. I think, ‘I’m Doctor Who – how did that happen?’

“It’s a huge privilege and hugely exciting. I remember when I first came into the Tardis, I had to be very patient as the very nice props guys showed me how to work the Tardis. I was thinking, ‘I know how to work the Tardis. I’ve known for a long time, probably longer than you, so you don’t need to tell me!’ Every day is amazing.”

So how does the actor feel about still having so much fun at the age of 56? Capaldi ends – as he began – with an apology. “I feel guilty. My wife says to me, ‘You still enjoying it?’ ‘Yeah, sorry!’”

I have had a Woe.Begone hyperfocus for some time and I am only just now listening to other stuff!

Finally finished How it Ends after dipping in and out of it over several years - I was not expecting that ending! I guess the clue was in the name.

Caught up on the Hallowoods. I like this format of main story bookended by Jimmy Yamaguchi being unsettling and MAROLMAR CONTINUING TO FILL ME WITH THE WHITE HOT RAGE OF A THOUSAND SUNS. Nikignik darling you can do so much better. Although I realise your dating pool is limited… sorry babes.

Binged all of How I Died, which manages to neatly combine mystery, horror, ghosts and sci-fi with some engaging and sympathetic characters and cool twists.

Late to the Margaret's Garden party (don't tell my friends). Somehow it managed to be both beautiful and kind of.. wacky? Anyway I love Pasha.

Midst…wow, it really is everything people said it was. The story was fun, and touching, and amazing worldbuilding, but as with so many shows it was the music that made it for me. I cannot wax lyrical enough about the music. Just these amazing expansive synthwave soundscapes, like something out of Bladerunner.

1,000 Words This Weekend: A Challenge

Last weekend, we wrote over 17,500 words together. Let's do it again!

The goal is pretty simple. Write 1,000 words or more over the next two days. You can work on anything you want — a blog, essay, fanfic, short story or chapter for your upcoming novel.

By committing to a goal and writing alongside other people, it's much more likely that you'll follow through. That's one of the main challenges of working solo on a project. When there's no boss or team, who will keep you accountable?

Saki: Are you feeling okay?

Namjoon was the epitome of obsession, it coursed through his veins just as much as blood did. 

He was comparable to a magpie, though his form of treasure was delicate little beings like you that he liked to lock up. And watch as you dance for him behind the bars of a cage, eyes piercing into your very soul until it melts and he mends you back together again. 

“What’s wrong, my darling?” Namjoon frowns, slouching back into his chair. 

You lay the book over your chest, heart-wrenching deja vu tickling your insides. “It’s just work. The old lady that owns the place is lowering our pay” 

Namjoon hums, “Why don’t you quit?” he takes off his glasses, hand running over his face. 

“Quit?” you sit up, eyebrows furrowing, “I probably have enough saved for a couple of weeks but after that I’m done for. It’s not like I’m paying rent anymore” 

Namjoon pushes himself to stand, slinking around his desk to stand before you, “That’s why I’m here. You don’t have to work anymore, I’ve got the both of us” 

You shake your head, “Namjoon I can’t do that” you tell him, leaning into his touch as his thumb caresses your jaw. 

“And why not?” He crouches down, head tilting in a way that is so very much Namjoon. 

“It’s unfair on you. Plus, I’m capable of taking care of myself” 

He runs his thumb over his bottom lip, “I know you are, but why have all the added stress when I’m more than happy to do this for us”

Some days Namjoon seemed awfully normal. Integrated perfectly into society, just like the rest of human kind. And some days you found it scary how ordinary he seemed when you knew of the things he did. He always seemed so in control of his own mind, thoughts easily articulated into convincing words, dressed proper, a kind smile. 

It was unnerving how someone so perfect was so very much the evil that you fear as a child. The grim reaper who melts into the darkess, takes a life and thinks no more of that pitiful being’s existence as he stalks through the night ready to chew on another soul. 

Maybe it was blissful ignorance that had chained you to him. If he were the being that men feared then it was only smart to latch onto him, to pretend he didn’t do all these bad things and let him squeeze his way into your heart. For you to be docile and quiet and everything he wanted from you. Even if his love hurt, thick shards of glass piercing their way into your heart and your mind and your body and your soul.

aogiri: The other day?

sinju: When Saki-chan wasn't feeling well. I had to perform so I wasn't able to see her again after that.

aogiri: I didn't do anything though. You noticed something was wrong and alerted the other staff members. And I just happened to be one of them. I’m aware that she is a very special guest, so I’m glad I could be of assistance.

sinju: Yeah, but still, thanks for lending a hand. I do wonder if she's really ok though, I’m worried. I really can't handle seeing someone collapse in front of me.

aogiri: Has that happened before?

sinju: …Yeah. At the time I felt so useless, it's like there was nothing I could do.

-ran runs in-

ran: Yo, Sinju, Aogiri, good mornin’! Did somethin’ happen? Ya both look so serious.

Ah, by the way Sinju, what happened after that conversation we had the other day? Y’know, the one about that therapy for Rindou.

sinju: Hey hold on a second Ran, you're saying that way too loudly!

ran: Ahahaha, oopsie sorry sorry. Aogiri, pretend ya didn't hear anythin’ just now, kay~?

aogiri: I don't mind. I am curious though.

ran: It's best ya keep quiet and let it go.

rindou: Menou, are you using the rehearsal room? Could you let me use half of it?

menou: Sure. Which scene are you going to practice?

rindou: The final scene, I suppose. I want to work on the scene where I watch Chénier and Maddalena’s execution.

menou: The scene where they get executed by the guillotine is expressed purely through your acting after all.

rindou: I feel as though I’m still not fully expressing the depths of Gérard’s despair. 

menou: Of course you aren't, it's cause you're still stepping on the brakes.

rindou: …You think I’m still holding myself back?

menou: You still aren't fully micromanaging us. Like you did once before, a long time ago, remember? You should stop being so roundabout and just give us orders as you see fit.

rindou: I don't want to create a show all by myself. That feeling has not changed. The stage that I wish for is one that is created together by everyone who is standing upon it.

menou: Hm? Meaning that you want everyone else to have the same resolve as you? I see. So that is your ‘desire’ then, huh? However, I don't have the same resolve as you, my ‘desire’ is different.

rindou: Desire, huh? You sure do love that word.

menou: It's basically Starless’ slogan. Since this store is where you can have your desires granted. So you should also do whatever you want, Rindou.

rindou: I plan to. I’m already determined to take this path.

menou: I hope everyone can share the same sentiment. I wonder if I’m prepared myself.

rindou: I’d like for you to try. In order to create our new Team P.

menou: I’m looking forward to seeing what shape this new P that you're aiming for will take.

rindou: Just aiming for it is not enough. 

menou: Of course, that's just how desire is after all.

nekome: (sigh) Why did I bother coming here… It's not like there's anything I can do either way.

iwami: Exactly, there is nothing left here anymore.

nekome: Kou-san. Why are you here?

iwami: Kokuyou said some disturbing stuff to me, so I just wanted to check on the place.

nekome: Kokuyou did?

iwami: There's definitely one thing I prefer about him compared to you. While you extort me for money, Kokuyou at least pays for his meal and drinks himself.

nekome: Did you two talk?

iwami: He asked me what I was scheming and why I left the old Starless building as is. I didn't answer him and yet, can you guess what he said next?

nekome: He said he was gonna destroy it, didn't he?

iwami: Bingo.

nekome: That's just like him. You wouldn't be able to bear it if it got destroyed, would you, Kou-san?

iwami: There's nothing here anymore, it's just an empty shell.

nekome: Kokuyou doesn't believe that though, does he? I don't even believe you when you say stuff like that.

iwami: Am I really that untrustworthy? Even though the three of us built Starless together. When it comes to you guys, you treat the Miki-san’s way more fondly than me.

nekome: Can you blame us? You’ve always been shady from the start. The reason I poked the bear is because I thought that.

iwami: It's rare hearing you talk about this. Curiosity killed the cat. That phrase really suits you perfectly.

nekome: I have something that I’d like to ask you.

iwami: Another rare occurrence.

nekome: Um well, it's about the use of BLACKSTAR. Can that change a person's personality? Not straight away either, but sometime after?

iwami: Sometime after? Meaning after the treatment? Hm…

nekome: Don't act ignorant and just tell me.

iwami: There's a possibility of it happening if it was an incomplete operation. If you want to know more about that, I suggest you observe Hinata more closely.

nekome: Huh? Hinata?

zakuro: Hm. Hm hm hm. This appears to be beyond my capabilities. I suppose I shall call in someone who can deal with it.

-time pass-

sotetsu: And so that's why you called us? You just want to use us for your own benefit.

kasumi: It is true that public safety being unstable in this area would be trouble for us though. Let's do our best, Sotetsu.

sotetsu: Yeah yeah, can't be helped. Zakuro, warn Saki not to come near here.

zakuro: Of course, a jester such as I can handle that much. Leave the little bird to me.

sotetsu: Welp, we’ll be right back then. Make sure you back me up, Kasumi.

kasumi: Of course~

-sotetsu and kasumi leave-

zakuro: Oh dear, I wonder who those thugs are after. The little bird? Or perhaps myself? In the end I can only leave it to the experts, being in the vicinity of a fight scene isn't my thing. I’ll leave the violence to those two and instead go and frolic with the beloved little bird.

-screen flashes red, sotetsu punches thug-

sotesu: Phew, that wasn't so hard. 

-different thug runs away-

sotetsu: Woah there, what a selfish bastard you are, abandoning your comrades and running huh? If you were gonna run you should’ve done so right away.

If you were faster on your feet you might've actually had a chance to escape. Nah nevermind, it's impossible. You can't run from a shadow.

-kasumi appears-

kasumi: Man~ Even a background character with no presence like me can be useful. They tried to run right past me so I had to bite. We’ve suppressed quite a few of them, but is this everyone?

sotetsu: Asking them all would be a pain so just one is fine. How about this guy right here? Let's ask him.

kasumi: The guy that you're currently stepping on?

sotetsu: This guy tried to sneakily run away, they're always the ones who know the most.

kasumi: That's true~ Then let's hear him out.

-kasumi picks the thug up off the ground-

kasumi: Could we speak with you for a moment~? Who did you have business with today?

sotetsu: Scary. I wouldn't want to be interrogated by a background character.

Despite behaving since summer, how come you decided to make a move now? This wasn't arranged. It looked like Kei was pulling some strings so I thought things would be fine.

kasumi: Hmm? So, could you have a little chat with us?

kasumi: Oh well~ When you're just a small fry in an organisation it's only natural they wouldn't know everything.

sotetsu: In the end he didn't know a thing. All he said was that the agreement seems to have crumbled but that's what they all say. With Haseyama back and Kei watching things like a hawk the situation should have changed though.

kasumi: What is this agreement he mentioned anyway?

sotetsu: What, you don't know? I mean it's not like I don't know the details either but… In short it's an agreement that no one can threaten Saki around here. It's basically an unspoken rule that you can't lay a finger on her.

If Haseyama did a poor job of being the balancer, she would have been targeted. He was managing just fine until he got hospitalised. But even whilst he was in a coma it appears his higher ups gave their support.

kasumi: And where on earth did you obtain that information from?

sotetsu: It takes one to know one. I just asked the other party what was going on. And so? Did you help me out this time just to show me how strong you are?

kasumi: I just felt like helping out. There is some information that I’m after.

sotetsu: About your sister, yeah? I still don't know her location.

kasumi: What about info on the perpetrators?

sotetsu: The perpetrators? You want to know that much? Finding your sister and ending things there would be the safer choice. For you and her both.

kasumi: This is none of your business.

sotetsu: I know, I know. Let's investigate that together too though. Got any leads?

kasumi: I had thought that Haseyama was involved but I couldn't find any evidence or indication that he actually is.

sotetsu: Meaning you want to use a different information source? Okay, I’ll try looking for one.

saki: (Rindou-san…)

maica: Saki, did you come to see us before the show? Thanks.

menou: Please enjoy our closing show.

nekome: I’m happy to see you before the show~ Now I’m even more pumped for the finale.

sinju: Rindou is concentrating so he probably won't say anything to you… Sorry about that.

saki: I’m sorry to bother you before the show too. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

-time pass, starless restaurant area-

unei: Team P’s show ‘Helpless Hope’ will be starting now.

saki: (Good luck everyone…)

-stage-

rindou: “Their song of farewell is the last remaining proof of their existence. Even now, it’s still reverberating within my heart without dissipating.”

“So, I will wear this sin of mine which can no longer be reversed. No matter how far I’ve come, no matter how far I go, I can never reach it. This hope brings no salvation– And there will be no end to this despair.”

nekome: Hm? Did you say something, Menou?

menou: Nope. Look, Rindou is coming back.

sinju: Woah, amazing…! It’s a standing ovation!

maica: They're applauding so loudly. Want to head out for the curtain call now, Rindou?

sinju: Your performance was really great, Rindou! …Rindou?

rindou: I won't be doing a curtain call.

maica: What are you saying? The audience is waiting for us, let's go.

rindou: Did you not hear what I just said? I won't be doing a curtain call.

menou: Rindou…

sinju: But the guests were all so moved by your performance. I can see some still crying.

rindou: Yes, I’m aware. However, the stage that I wanted to put on was not achieved. This wasn't the stage I wanted them to witness. Our performance and Maica’s singing both did not reach them.

maica: What are you saying? What on earth was wrong with my singing? Go on, tell me, Rindou!

nekome: Maica calm down. You too, Rindou.

rindou: I’m perfectly calm. I’m just disappointed things didn't turn out how I wished for them to. I told you, didn't I? I want to create a new Team P. The shows that we’ve been putting on as P up until now have not been good enough.

nekome: Let me ask you one more time, Rindou. You won't be appearing in our curtain call then?

rindou: Yes, stop making me repeat myself. I will not not be doing a curtain call.

-rindou leaves-

maica: That– That damn bastard! Rindou, get back here! Godammit, let me go, Sinju!

-maica struggles to break free-

sinju: No way, Maica. I’m sorry, but I can't do that. I don't want us to fight!

sinju: Rindou! Wait up! I’m telling you to wait!

rindou: …So you all followed me?

sinju: What was that about before? What do you mean we didn't reach them?

maica: You said my singing didn't reach them either. Explain yourself.

nekome: Settle down you two.

maica: …….

sinju: You said it just before Rindou. That our performance wasn't enough.

rindou: Yeah, I did. Our performance and Maica’s singing both did not reach those who were watching us. This wasn't the stage I wanted them to witness.

sinju: Do you mean our execution of the show wasn't up to standard then? Even though the audience applauded us so much?

rindou: This has nothing to do with the amount of applause we received.

maica: I sang exactly how you wanted me to sing. So I’m telling you to explain yourself already.

sinju: Team P’s shows make the best of everyone's skills and we all elevate each other. Isn't that right? At least, that's what I thought our shows were about?

rindou: Elevate each other… That's right. That's how Team P’s shows were created and I feel as though it had been working quite well. 

However, that just means that you need to cut down your own performance little by little in order to match the level of the other members.

You need to find a balance that can be maintained. And as a result, everyone’s overall level is suppressed. No matter how much you try to multiply a performance that’s less than 100%, it won't become 100%. 

menou: So it's not about addition but instead multiplication… That's what you're saying right? Rindou.

sinju: So you mean, Rindou has been holding back? In order to work with us, he's been lowering the level of his own performance?

rindou: At the time, I thought that I was fine with that. Back when Maica joined P as our singer. Ginsei moved to K and Menou moved into our team. Even though we had to throw away the performances we’d been doing until then, I wanted to perform with this new Team P.

rindou: Right now, even if we have to throw away the performances we've been doing up until now, I want to perform with Maica’s vocals.

zakuro: As expected you are familiar with my situation. I am nothing but impressed. You must already have a good grasp on all of the information that I would know.

aogiri: I do not know everything. I only know information regarding the institution.

zakuro: (sigh) Did you have to bring up that name?

aogiri: If we keep being vague we’ll both grow tired of it. And I have higher priorities. I’m glad that Haseyama-san returned since the agreement around here can be maintained.

zakuro: I don't understand though, how come you haven't taken action?

aogiri: I am still waiting for the right opportunity. We spoke about this at that shrine last month, remember? You asked if I wanted to make myself indebted to you.

-mokuren appears-

zakuro: Mokuren.

mokuren: How come you two are here so early? Well whatever, this works out. Zakuro, I need you to prepare our next show for us. If we can produce a new work then we’ll be scheduled next, Kei gave me his word.

zakuro: I see, roger that. I shall prepare a show for us.

mokuren: As for the singer for this show… You two can decide between yourselves.

zakuro: My oh my, so you're saying I’m not the only option?

mokuren: During our fifth anniversary performance you let Aogiri sing as well. So that's why I’m asking.

aogiri: If you're giving us the choice, then I’d like to put my hand up.

zakuro: Hm… I am content with that too then.

mokuren: Got it. Aogiri, you’ll be the singer for our next show and Zakuro will be the understudy. Correct?

zakuro: Yes, understood.

mokuren: Aogiri, I’ll leave the various other preparations to you. Like your voice and our costumes.

aogiri: Is that really ok? To be honest I wasn't expecting you to go along with it.

kei: It appears you were lost in thought. I heard that you passed out midway through the run of P’s show as well. Are you still feeling unwell?

saki: I’m ok. It was only that day I was feeling bad.

kei: If you say so, I shall believe you. But please do not overdo it. I want you to stay safe and healthy. I want to protect you.

kei: The day where you will come to understand everything is not far away. At least, that is what I believe.

master: For his goal he will throw anything and everything away. He will persist through any setback. Kei came here to save Starless, because that is connected to protecting you. Once everything is said and done, you will be free.

saki: Kei-san, why is it that you’re always…Why do you keep saying that you’ll ‘protect’ me?

kei: Saki…

Chapter 1133 of One Piece highlights one of the most emotional, Nico Robin and Saul D. Jaguar, again after years of separation during the Ohara incident. Nico Robin and Saul D. Jaguar are best friends who had spent quite a time together during their stay at Ohara. However, the World Government attacked their land, causing chaos among the locals. It all started after the Marines discovered that the scholars from the island were illegally researching Poneglyphs and World Century, which the World Government tried to hide from the world. As soon they realised that their research would stir questions among the public, they ordered Buster Call on Ohara. This action destroyed the Tree of Knowledge and the death of almost every citizen. The only person who survived the Buster Call is Nico Robin. And all the credit for her safety goes to Saul and Kuzan. They are the two who sincerely care for Robin and want her to live. Saul, an ex-Vice Admiral, was carrying her out before the Buster Call. However, they were stopped by Kuzan, who used his Devil Fruit abilities to freeze Saul completely. Later, after understanding the World Government's motives, he lets Robin run despite his mission, killing everyone in the Ohara. Please read through the information carefully to understand what will be expected of you as a participant.

You do not need to have decided what you will be writing at this stage, but please consider whether the fic requirements are compatible with what you have in mind, and be sure that you can commit to contacting us on the below deadlines to share your progress (or withdraw your participation if necessary).

Participation Requirements:

You must choose whether to join the Big Bang as an artist or writer. You may not do both.

Writers will require an AO3 account; if you do not have an AO3 account, please request one via AO3’s login page.

If you wish to write M or E rated fics you must be aged over 18.

All participants must read and adhere to the Expected Conduct guidelines (see below).

Minimum Final Word Count: 20,000

Maximum Number of Fics per Writer/s: 1

Maximum Number of Writers per Fic (collaboration): 2

Fic Draft Requirements: At the draft deadline (July 9th), we will require a complete draft of at least 18,000 words. “Complete” means that the fic is written from start to finish with no indispensable scenes missing or left as outlines—think, “If I posted this right now, would I be happy with the story it tells?”

Ideally, you will refine and polish your draft in the remaining time, but it can also be your final draft if you prefer.

Drafts will be handed in via a form that will be sent out to you before the deadline. Drafts should be available in Google docs, or if need be in PDF format.

Summary Requirements: A form for the summary will be sent out to you before the deadline. Summaries should briefly outline the general premise, and include rating, ships, triggers and other warnings, and any other relevant details.

Eligible Fics:

Fics of any rating and with any warnings are permitted, as long as they meet the minimum word count (20,000), are centered around at least one Rusty Quill original podcast (The Magnus Archives, Rusty Quill Gaming, Stellar Firma, Inexplicables, Chapter & Multiverse, Trice Forgotten), and are tagged appropriately.

We encourage authors to take this opportunity to challenge themselves to take on a project that they might not otherwise—though please consider what is realistic in terms of the deadlines as well!

Fics must be stand-alone (requires no knowledge of previous fics to enjoy), complete (resolves all main plotlines within the story, as opposed to being part I of a trilogy, etc.), and previously unposted.

Crossovers are allowed, but the focus should be on the RQ podcast involved. For example: a fusion crossover with the Leverage Team replacing the LOLOMG in the RQG!verse would not be permitted, though the RQG characters in the Leverage!verse would be.

Please be aware that fics with obscure crossovers, common squicks, higher ratings, etc., may be more difficult to match, and thus take a little longer to get snapped up. We will do our best to find you a suitable match, though!

If you have any questions about the suitability of your fic, please contact the mods.

Matching Process:

The artist sign-up will include a list of the anonymised fic summaries. Each artist will select 3 fics which they would be interested in creating for, with additional preferences (favourite show/shows they do not follow, OTPs and NoTPs, Do Not Wants, etc.) indicated in the comment field. Mods will then match writers to artists, taking preferences into account as much as possible.

If fics are oversubscribed or if it is otherwise necessary for matching, they may be removed from the list of eligible fics before the end of artist sign-ups.

If you have an issue with your match, please let the mods know as soon as possible.

Do Not Wants:

In this event, you will have an opportunity to Do Not Want (DNW) the types of content that you do not wish to work on. Similarly, if you’ve had conflicts with certain people in the past and do not want to risk matching to them, you can include this in your sign-up or draft submission, and we will avoid matching you with them (details of these will not be shared beyond the mod team).

The mods will always account for DNWs within reason; however, attempts to manipulate matches via DNWs or otherwise acting in bad faith will result in the rejection of your sign-up or draft. We are also not private detectives, and will thus not be fielding any requests such as “do not match me with anyone who has ever drawn/written XYZ.” Please keep that in mind when considering whether this event is right for you.

Expected Conduct:

By signing up for this event, you agree to do your best to meet the deadlines. If you might need a little more time, please email the mods to explain your situation before the deadline passes. Those who miss deadlines without contacting the mods beforehand may be dropped from the event without further contact.

In order to participate in this event, you must be willing to contact the mods directly in the event that you have a question, concern, or issue with your participation (as in the deadline example above). We are happy to help participants with anything that arises, but cannot accept “telephone”-style communiques on behalf of others.

Be in regular contact with your match—if you’re going to be offline for a significant length of time, let them know. Radio silence from your match in events of this kind can be very concerning. (If you are having trouble getting in touch with your match, please contact us!)

Please take care to credit your artist/writer in your own final post.

Our Discord server has its own list of rules, which are listed within the server. If you decide to join the server, we require you to read and abide by those rules.

Be kind and courteous towards your match and fellow participants. This naturally means that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are prohibited, but even where those are not at play, you are expected to treat others with respect.

We, like Rusty Quill, have an “all headcanons are valid” policy. Harassment or mockery of those with different interpretations will not be tolerated. This does not mean you cannot discuss how you see the characters with others or that your artist/writer should not take it into account at their discretion, but insistence that any one interpretation must be adhered to is not allowed.

If you have concerns that a work or participant may be in violation of the rules, please bring it to the mods directly. Harassment of other participants (including but not limited to callout posts, name-calling, baiting, etc.), either publicly or in the Piles of Nonsense discord server, over their identities, fanworks, or headcanons will result in an instant default.

1,000 Words in a Weekend: A Challenge

I'm working on a couple new projects and need to write a bunch of words over the weekend. It's time for a challenge!

The goal is pretty simple. Write 1,000 words or more over the course of the weekend. You can work on anything you want — a blog, essay, fanfic, short story or chapter for your upcoming novel.

By committing to a goal and writing alongside other people, it's much more likely that you'll follow through. That's one of the main challenges of working solo on a project. When there's no boss or team, who will keep you accountable?
