Graveyard Shift AU
I desperately need to talk ab my ninjago ghost au, and I'm making all of you listen to my yap session (seriously i have a Pinterest board and a playlist I've gone insane)
OKAY so first of all this is technically a modern au that takes place in vaguely america bc that's where i live and the culture is most familiar to me but Lloyd is asian (vietnamese mother, japanese father) and technically the continent is still called Ninjago. Anyways Lloyd lives with his mother Misako in Ninjago City (like in the movie). To his knowledge, his father walked out on them when he was 4-5, and his mom had a HUGE fight with his uncle shortly after, which has led to Wu being extremely estranged from him. Lloyd knows next to nothing ab his dad or uncle bc Misako hates talking ab both of them. Lloyd is routinely left home alone for weeks at a time bc Misako is an archeologist who frequently leaves the country to go on digs or whatever archeologists do. She's like borderline neglectful but not a bad person okay. Anyways backstory aside I guess the inciting incident is Lloyd getting relocated by CPS. His mom has been out of the country for 2 months now, way longer than she should be, and hasn't so much as left him on read for like two weeks, which is a problem since he ran out of money for food, so he's been eating like ramen for two weeks straight.
Anyways a neighbor gets concerned and calls CPS on his ass, and they're like "yeah no this is fucked" so after they can't get ahold of Misako, they relocate him with his uncle in Jamanakai Village, which is probably the Worst Possible Place
Anyways Lloyd fuckin HATES Wu just on principle and also abandonment issues. Plus going from a parent who barely knows what ur favorite color is to an estranged uncle up your ass ab grades and leaving the room for an hour a day is a hell of a transition. Anyways their relationship is rocky at best until Lloyd gets shot which I'll get to
Basically Lloyd attends school for a few weeks where he immediately befriends Harumi (his stalker and a cultist) and Akita (a shapeshifting fae who Really Wants Him Dead). For now, Akita isn't a problem, and Harumi isn't... much of a problem
After a while of Lloyd getting into fights (he has a history of getting bullied bc shocker his freaky ghost powers give him demon eyes ((he doesn't know he has these powers yet)) and his grades slipping Wu makes him get a job as like a discipline thing. Instead of working in his uncle's tea shop where'd he probably get more than minimum wage bc nepotism, he spites Wu by choosing to work at a goddamn graveyard (get it? Graveyard Shift?) run by Mystake. At first Wu hates this bc it's a graveyard and also he knows shit ab Lloyd that Lloyd doesn't (COUGH ghost powers COUGH) but he eventually relents (IDIOT)
So Lloyd works at a graveyard for a few weeks, during which he meets a random stray cat he names Jade (the cat is Harumi. I promise I will explain the whole Harumi thing in another post but this is strictly storyline shit rn) and one night while he's walking home from work, he gets followed and shot by some hooded figure. One near death experience later he's waking up in a hospital after like a week with even freakier eyeballs and the ability to see ghosts. Basically, his powers were stunted by a deepstone ring his mother gave him, but a near death experience rendered it basically useless since it brought out too much power for the ring to really do anything about.
So Lloyd basically kicks off a vigilante arc when almost immediately the town starts getting attacked by ghosts determined to cause chaos everywhere Danny-Phantom-style. He denies being a vigilante bc he thinks it's cringey but his other option is calling himself a ghostbuster.
Anyways it's later revealed that someone called The Quiet One is the one summoning and putting ghosts on steroids to like. Make Lloyd use his powers a whole bunch bc she really wants him to go with her back to her cult. At the same time, a shapeshifting girl in a wolf mask starts trying to murder both of them and she absolutely refuses to explain why. So an episodic type structure ensues with villain-of-the-week ghosts popping up for Lloyd to test his powers on while QO stands around in the background trying to either a) convince him to go with her to her cult bc she just has so many answers or b) flat out kidnap him with increasingly ridiculous schemes that never work, either bc of Red the Murderous Wolf with a Very Big Knife, or general Looney-Tunes shenanigans, while Red is still trying to murder them both with equal levels of Looney-Tunes shenanigans. Also, Lloyd gets a boyfriend. This is a Problem. At the same time, Lloyd is trying to figure out Ghost Lore by himself while simultaneously hiding his vigilante/ghostbuster shit from his friends and boyfriend, one (technically two) of which already know ab said ghostbuster bullshit. Also, his mom is still missing.
Eventually everything goes to shit and the horror genre of this really kicks in when Dareth (Lloyd's social worker) reveals that Misako never so much as checked into her hotel room, which is weird since Lloyd had gotten texts from her for like over a month where she told him all kinds of stuff ab work. He comes to the conclusion that she up and abandoned him, and in an attempt to run away from this conclusion, decides to impulsively explore the tomb in the middle of the graveyard, which the ghost gang (uh. the ninja and morro. The ninja are all ghosts in this au) thinks has tons of Ghost Lore inside. It's during this that he finds a scroll about a Realm Crystal and its location/how to use it. Jade, who followed him into the tomb, tries to use Mystake's appearance to manipulate him into handing it over, and it's revealed that she's been stalking him and impersonating like half the people in his life. (I promise I'll explain her deal in another post) anyways the psychological horror kicks in and the whole thing dominoes into Wu getting kidnapped when Harumi gives up on the friendship ruse (not that she isn't actually Lloyd's friend. She loves him and Akita, she's just really fuckin desperate and in the middle of a breakdown), and Lloyd getting portalled away. He calls Akita for help, Akita figures out he's Conduit (uh. that's his code name) and her identity is also revealed when she tries to murder him (she's also having big emotions ab this)
So now Lloyd is attempting to get to the Realm Crystal/save his parents and uncle from a cult while both Harumi and Akita are chasing him and trying to kidnap/murder him. which is what was already happening but now it's three-way angst fests and mental breakdowns. Also Lloyd gets saddled with Dareth, who is strapped and has no other competent qualities aside from his ability to make dumplings. Blah blah blah they eventually have a big three-way fight at like idk a temple, Lloyd is kidnapped, Harumi has a crisis and decides "fuck wait i love these guys and i hate this cult. also i don't want the world to end" and does a 180 and switches sides. Akita is deciding that she isn't okay with killing her friends while she teams up with Dareth to un-kidnap Lloyd. Redemptions and forgiveness underway, Lloyd gets possessed by the Preeminent, body horror ensues, boss fight ensues, bam down. In case you haven't noticed I plot aus like they're fanfics and I've been thinking about this one for a hot fuckin second

The Moon and the Stars.
─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───
Remus, Sirius, James, and Peter were best friends. They could not imagine life without each other. They were as close as close could get. Of course, there were always pairs within friend groups, James and Sirius being one of them. As long as James had air in his lungs and light in his eyes, so did Sirius. They did everything together. They were brothers. One could not exist without the other.
This may be why Remus always felt a slight tug in his heart when watching the pair interact. He tried to stifle the feeling and push it down because he knew they were best friends and nothing but that, but he couldn’t help the slight feeling of envy. Remus cared for the marauders profoundly, each one of them. He loved that James was passionate and loved his friends fiercely, and he loved that Peter, although quiet, was someone they could count on to be there, but Sirius. Sirius was everything.
Let Remus tell it, and the whole world, wizarding and muggle, would’ve thought that Sirius Orion Black hung the moon and the stars himself because, in Remus’ eyes, he did. In his mind, Sirius was the only person who could have put them up there because they were beautiful, and so was he. Sirius Black was the most beautiful person Remus Lupin had ever seen. So naturally, anything beautiful, he associated with the black-haired vision that plagued his every thought.
When he wasn’t thinking about schoolwork or working on the next prank, his thoughts did not stray far from Sirius. He reckoned this was becoming a bit of an obsession and perhaps a little creepy, but how could he help himself when Sirius Black was an enigma he was desperate to know every detail about. His harbored love for his best friend was a large reason why his heart always seemed to ache.
Sirius was always so affectionate with his friends. Remus had to pretend that every loving syllable, every bump of shoulders, and every teasing wink didn’t send his heart racing and his stomach into knots. He hoped and pleaded to whoever was out there that Sirius didn’t pick up on his blushes, and the reason why Remus seemed to only do it around him. And please, don’t even get Remus started on Sirius’ beloved use of possessive pronouns. It was always “My Moony” my. My. MY. Little did Sirius know that that was all Remus craved to be was his.
Despite his constant inner turmoil and craving for more, he was grateful for what he had. He did not dare take it for granted. Beggars can’t be choosers or whatnot. He could die a happy man tomorrow because although the beautiful bastard didn’t know it, Remus Lupin body and soul belonged to Sirius Black. He was wholeheartedly his. It makes one wonder how fast Remus’ poor heart would beat if he knew that in Sirius Black’s world, Remus Lupin hung the moon and the stars. Sirius Black wholeheartedly, body and soul, belonged to one lovely Remus Lupin.

I truly do love cooking. I wish I had more than a hot plate to work with, but beggars and choosers and whatnot. One day I will have a great big kitchen with a table like the last supper, or else a little kitchen to stand shoulder to shoulder in, reaching past the ones I love for spoons and dishrags. I think I’d prefer the latter.

Spy x Family Volume 11 Ultra Collector
Well, I'm going to be a little late with Spy x Family and the start of Apothecary Diaries today because my afternoon is very busy, so let me show off this really cool Spy Fam special edition from French publisher Kurokawa.
Yeah, there's a hell of a lot in here, and a lot to chat about. Let me start with the box first. Truthfully, I'm sort of let down by it. It's less robust than the volume 8 special edition's box that is a bottom and a lid. Volume 11's using a thinner/lighter box overall and opens via flaps on the side instead of lifting up the top.
What I do like about this box though is how it sticks close in style to volume 8's. Where 8 was a suitcase, volume 11 is all about a TV, which has a pretty fun gimmick. That illustration of Anya, Loid, and Yor? You can actually swap it out with 3 others to "change the channel" on the TV. It's a fun way to spice up the exterior, but I have just one complaint: it's rather finnicky. The card that the illustrations are on is just sorta "in" the box, so it slides and moves around and whatnot. I would have really appreciated a little pocket or sleeve on the inside that the card slid into, but also, this is just the package that the good stuff comes in.
So speaking of good stuff, the tote bag. It's very fun, and surprisingly good quality. The bag also features the illustration of the Forger family on both sides of the bag. I wouldn't say it's the biggest ever, but you could comfortably use it for light to medium shopping in terms of manga. Can't fit 10+ volumes in here easily, but I think anything less than that is plenty fine.
Alright, next up is the books. Now, this is the special edition for volume 11, but there's another volume in here? Well that's because they include the Spy x Family light novel 'Family Portrait' with it. Very cool to see, but I do sort of wish we could have had a special cover for it as well. Though I mean, beggars can't be choosers we got one for Volume 11. Also, I really appreciate that French pubs either make the dust jackets reversible, or keep the original dust jacket alongside the special one. For display purposes it's very handy.
Both the coolest but most frustrating piece in this special edition is the bookend. I think it's a super cool thing to add, especially since it's metal, but that's also where the problem comes in. You need to bend the bookend to make it a bookend. With it being metal, there's not really any going back if you wanted to just display it as a metal card. Not something I like, so it'll be living as metal card forever. Though it's not like I have any alternatives for how they could avoid this issue, so it's a bit hard to voice it as a valid complaint.
And now into the illustration cards. I love getting stuff like this because it gives you so much freedom. They're loose and individual, not double sided, and of decent size (the same size as the manga). Some might disagree, but I think it's fun that they're pre-existing artworks (two of the landscape cards are featured as a poster in the LN). Mostly because you get to 'have' the art from various places as their own separate thing. Really liked one of the color pages or illustrations for Spy x Family, but Viz doesn't do color pages for the manga? Well, now you get them here and separate from the manga. Just a nice touch.
Speaking of nice touches, the bookmarks. They're just from the various covers of the manga, but I think as a sentiment they're a very nice addition (especially because I don't have any bookmarks at all). Just something very simple and easy to add to flesh out the goodies you can get from the special edition.
So there it is, the super cool 'ultra collector' edition of Spy x Family. This is a really interesting addition to my collection and I think a lot of the pieces to this are very unique in terms of what you'll see with special editions. Word of warning though, it's not a cheap special edition. Considering how much comes with it, I'd still say it's worth it for those that enjoy it, but it's not something that a lot of people will "just pick up".

Hey Clovis, with Mother’s Day around the corner, I’m curious: are you close with your mom? Will you be celebrating with her?
(ooc: not me answering this months later )
"huh, oh mother's day? that was... ah... a week ago or something, right? *yawn* yeah im close with my ma mère. my mom, i mean. i don't see her a lot physically anymore since ive got *yaaawwwnnn* counselor duties and whatnot, but i talk to her in my dreams at least once a week or so. try to at least. even just a small check-in with a nice hug is better than nothing."
"i see my dad far more often than my mom because... you know... i do be sleepin' and hypnos is actually one of the more attentive godly parents, but i grew up with my mom so she'll always have that edge though i love them both a lot."
"*yawwwnnn* oh, yeah. the other question. i asked nico to shadow travel me to see mom on mothers day. brought her some cookies the dryads made since she loves sweet stuff. also gave her a fleece tie blanket i made in arts and crafts that took me... well... approximately A Long Time to finish but she loved it and she smiled a lot and thanked me and told me she loved me and gave me a hug and *yawn* it was really nice. what was Not really nice was will badgering me and nico later because apparently will wants me to leave my cabin and go outside but when i ask nico very nicely to shadow travel me somewhere he gets all grumpy. *shrug* beggars cant be choosers."
"but yeah... yeah. i love my mom." 💙
(ooc/headcanons under the cut)
hi hi!! so i headcanon that clovis's mom was originally from france (hence his very french name) and moved to new york under the guidance of hypnos through dreams in order to get his son to camp without being too far away from his mama. his mom speaks almost solely french and very little english so clovis grew up speaking french AND english since he attended public schooling before going to camp and switching to be a year round camper after he became the head counselor of his cabin.
i imagine they are very close. his mother had to be very attentive with clovis due to his narcolepsy and hypersomnia. as a baby and toddler, it was often difficult to figure out if he needed to be fed or was sick etc. because he slept so much, and he also was slower to learn how to walk and hit other developmental milestones because of that. due to his mother speaking little to no english, as clovis got older, he often stayed by her side when he wasnt at school to help translate.
i have two ideas for what his mother does career-wise. one idea is that she works in a library which is why and where clovis obtained a ton of his knowledge about mythology aside from his dreams. the one i default to though is that she owns a small bakery (nearby a library) where she handmakes everything. clovis used to "work" there as well, usually to translate, but he grew up around his mother's baking so he is actually a very good baker! not many people know this since he's usually asleep which is a tragedy truly. now that his mom can speak and understand english a bit better and was also able to get enough funds to hire a translator once clovis became a year round camper, clovis doesnt venture down there too often. every once in a while though, he will ask for someone (usually nico) to go with him to visit his mom for a bit.
his mom has met and greatly enjoys the people he has befriended including but not limited to annabeth, nico, will, and lou ellen. she's very chatty and very generous so she often tries to convince clovis and his friends to stay for a homecooked dinner or spend the night. she also still has clovis's bedroom all set up and cozy for whenever he decides to drop by, just in case.
also, chiron actually helps clovis's mom out on the down low by allowing her to take some of the camp's strawberries for her baked goods under the agreement that she will send some over sometime which she is more than happy to do!
as stated above, i think clovis has, at the very least, weekly dream check-ins with his mom. he might not always have a lot to share but his mom adores him and listens to every word. on rare occasions, sometimes even clovis's half-siblings, his friends, or hypnos himself will stumble/be pulled into these check-ins and they'll all have a lovely lil hangout sesh.
but YEAH!! clovis loves him mama, and his mama loves him!!
#i didnt know if u wanted me to answer in character or not so forgive me if i perceived ur ask incorrectly 🙏#answered#clovis#clovis pjo#percy jackson#heroes of olympus#nico di angelo#will solace#camp half blood#pjo#riordanverse#hypnos cabin#fostydosty

Dave: Say John! Ain't we s'posed to be out here buildin' an animal sanctuary or something? These blueprints got plans for a gym, a bowlin' alley, a movie theatre, a damn arcade? Not to mention a bunch of residentials. This is a damn private town! What gives? John: All I know is, if they pay me, I build 'em what they want. And these people are LOADED, and they're payin' us enough to set us for life, so quit your blabbin.
Jennifer: John's right, Dave. Birdie Sparrow and her mother Persephone Darling have decided to move to Henford-on-Bagley to open an animal sanctuary to rescue all the woodland critters and farm animals that need help and whatnot. The thing is, the Sparrows got about a dozen kids and want them all living here on this property. That's where we come in. They got the simoleons, and they'll be livin' large.
Mike: Ain't no Cottage Living, that's for sure.
Starling: They've got a lot of work to do... Mira: But hey, they're making progress.
Starling: Thank you again, angel, for agreeing to be the Sparrowville Animal Sanctuary's lead veterinarian. I know it's risky for you to accept this offer.
Mira: I should be thanking you for getting me this job! Starling: Don't say that. My Mother and Grandma asked for you specifically. I just hope Tatiana doesn't lose her mind over this. I know she wanted you to take over her family business.
Mira: Well, she's the one who pressured me into this line of work anyway. Beggars can't be choosers and all that. I don't want to live the rest of my life in Brindleton Bay. Plus she's so busy with Sandra's wedding planning, she doesn't have time to care that I moved to Henford-on-Bagley.
Starling: Well, anyway... my side of the family appreciates you, love.
Mira: Aww, you- Starling: Ugh! Can we leave now? I've worked enough today. Mira: [Laughs] Sure, let's go home.

hi! this is very unrelated to your blog, but you seem pretty reasonable, and everyone i ask for advice gives me different answers lol. i’m currently applying for internships and have been to so many interviews already that i’m quite tired of it.
i’ve been offered an internship at one place, and they seem very nice and accommodating to my needs. however, it’s an organization i don’t fully agree with because it’s in the agriculture business and isn’t very environmentally friendly. it’s kind of a political organization that is trying to avoid a climate tax and not deal with the climate crisis. i’m not a climate saint myself, but i do care and try my best, so i’m unsure if it would be hypocritical of me to work for a cause i don’t fully support. they even asked me in the interview how i would handle people reacting to my working there, which surprised me because i wasn’t aware people had such strong opinions (what if people judge me??)
i might be able to get an internship somewhere else (no guarantee), but the tasks sound less interesting, and they won’t allow me a day off for my therapy lol. pls help me and don’t judge me lol :(
hiya! must admit im extremely flattered that you find me reasonable enough to take your query too…adding this to my CV and saying it’s an advice column of mine.
as for your predicament!! i dont feel comfortable or justified in expressly telling you what to do and i can see that this is a tricky situation to be in…i suppose it’s a decision that just involves you weighing up your priorities at this point in your life and career and also how those priorities are best served in the long run. obviously i don’t know the ins and outs of this company, although the idea that they would ask you how you’d handle your association with them seems an extreme enough question to suggest that they’re pretty controversial?? if it’s something you feel strongly about to the point where it’s going to cause you anguish then id say don’t do it, because it’s likely to make you miserable as well as contributing to what appears to be a pretty unethical company. if there is a route that allows you to avoid being a part of that, that’s always going to be the desirable one.
on the other hand this is an internship rather than a job and as someone also currently looking for an internship or a job or anything at all, it’s kind of a beggars can’t be choosers situation for most of us, where to get any experience at all is quite a desperate ask. and at the end of the day getting experience and then moving on is the idea behind internships, so if you feel that getting that experience in order to go on to a job where you’re in a position to do that good is the trade off here that’s another way to look at it.
idk again without knowing the specifics im not comfortable telling you to go and intern for a morally dubious agricultural company, so if you feel theres a strong possibility you can find something else workable im inclined to suggest you do that, but i also won’t pretend i can’t understand why you’re conflicted over this. i can’t speak to the risks of people judging you and whatnot and i wouldn’t advise basing your decision on fear of being judged rather than fear that it would resonate with your own disagreements with the morals of the company. if you think people would judge you because you can see that it’s something that deserves to be judged, that probably speaks more to your own feelings and is an indication that you shouldn’t go for it. again i can’t tell you exactly what you ought to do, but those are some ways of looking at it and things to consider. hope you’re able to come to a decision that feels good!
#please don’t read into my advice any more than you would a friend u are talking to at the pub because i really don’t know what im talking#about any more than that and have no real credentials to be giving out advice other than you sending me this ask. good luck!#telegram#anon

a bit of an interesting tidbit! back when the first lbp game came out they sold these sackboy blind boxes called sackboy superstars which had different outfits of sackboy coordinated with a lot of the story mode outfits and whatnot. i have 2 of these - italy and australia! (funnily enough not in. the story mode but whatever)
anyways i found them and wanted to measure them to see if they fit the bill and its surprisingly close! theyre both about 5 1/2 cm in size.
pc copy of sims 4 for reference
it would be cool if they were 7-8 cm but beggars cant be choosers. hope this scratches an itch in your brain XP
(also ignore that they are missing body parts ive had these for over a decade)
In case anyone wanted to know sackboy’s canonical height, the manual for the Japanese release of lbp3 has sackboy’s height listed. If we are assuming centimeters here then sackboy is 7cm/2.75in tall. In other words this dude is small

A Place Like This 1
Warnings: this short series will include dark elements including noncon, possible violence, mentions of mental illness, and other explicit content. I’m not your mother, curate your own consumption.
This is dark!Lumberjack!Andy Barber and explicit. Your media consumption is your own responsibility. Warnings have been given. DO NOT PROCEED if these matters upset you.
Summary: Your new boarder isn’t who he seems to be.
Note: So I wanted to do a lumberjack!Andy and got a bit carried away but let me tell you, somehow Andy always turns into an ultimate creep with me.
Thank you. Love you guys!
As always, if you can, please leave some feedback, like and reblog <3
It wasn’t often you found a stranger in Heron Creek.
The small town was barely more than a single street; most residents lived further out. It was more a marketplace than anything. Townsfolk came to shop and socialise amid the limited stretch of businesses and not much else. The lumberyard fueled much of the economy and was closer than any home.
After weeks of arguing with your mother, you’d finally resigned. You needed a boarder to see you through the winter. Money was tight since your mother’s diagnosis; pills, therapy, reduced income. Your own job was just enough to see to the bills but not for the groceries or any incidentals. Even if you did some odd jobs around town, you wouldn’t be able to scrape enough to get by.
You’d never seen the man before. The message had been expected and a last hope. You agreed to meet at the town’s only cafe and were surprised and slightly disappointed.
He greeted you by name as you looked around. You expected a woman; the advert had requested only females but, you supposed, that beggars couldn’t be choosers.
“Andy,” He introduced himself as he offered you his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“You too,” You lied as you sat.
“You want a coffee? I’m headed up for a refill,” He grabbed his empty mug.
“Sure,” You reached for your wallet. You could tell by his accent he was from the city; if you were to guess, one far from Heron Creek. “Thank you.”
“Don’t worry about it. I can get it.” He waved you off as you fumbled with your purse. “I’ll be back.”
He returned with two cups and slid one over to you. You added cream from the table.
“I know you advertised for women only but… I’m kinda running out of options and judging by how long your ad’s been in the paper, I think you might be too.” He began.
“Uh huh,” You sipped from your coffee. “You’re new around here.”
“I am.” He confirmed. “But you’re not so you should know there’s not a lot to choose from.”
“Why would you move all the way up here?”
“Tired of the city.” He said evenly.
“You have a job?” You asked.
“At the lumberyard.” He replied. “Been there two months now, living down at Harry Brennan’s but he’s ready to have me out.”
“Hmm, yeah, he can be a bit prickly,” You remarked. “My mother, too. She’s sick. Moody. You sure you wanna trade in one for the other?”
He looked at you. He sat with his shoulders back, his head held up proudly. His gaze was discerning, as if he was measuring your every word and move.
“I can pay more than you’re asking and I’ll help out around the house.” He said. “Well, I won’t decide until I see the place, of course, but I’m optimistic.”
You tasted the bitter coffee. You preferred your own brew. You nodded as you set down your mug.
“They don’t have many lumberyards in the city. What’d you do before?”
“I was a lawyer.” He said. “And what do you do?”
“A lawyer? You’d give up that to live in the middle of nowhere and chop wood?”
“It’s quiet up here. Peaceful.” He tapped his fingers on the table beside his gloves. “A few more months and I should be able to afford my own place. At least a plot to start building.”
You considered him and held your palm to the warm porcelain. Your mother was wary of men. You couldn’t make the decision without her.
“You didn’t tell me what you do.” He said.
“I’m a writer. Mostly pieces on the local species and whatnot. There’s not many jobs to be had around here but on the internet…”
“So?” He asked as he shifted in his chair.
“I’ll have to talk to my mother.” You answered. “Then maybe you can come check out the room. It’s a big enough place for three. Probably too big but there’s a lot of work to be done in the winter.”
“Right,” He said. “As I said, I’ll help out with anything I can.”
You squinted and gulped the coffee even though it burned your throat. You stood and gathered up your purse.
“I don’t mean to run out but I have to hit Marla’s.” You hooked the strap of your bag over your shoulder. “I’ll let you know before the end of the week, but… well, my mom isn’t an easy person to deal with. Not unless you’re related.”
“Got it,” He watched you placidly as he rose. “I look forward to hearing from you.”
🍂
You heard voices from the front porch. You blinked and set down the basket of warm laundry on the kitchen table as you sighed at your mother’s mug. There was still tea in it which meant she had taken her first chance to chase her innate stubborn streak.
You’d argued for much of the morning as she accused you of inviting a strange man into her home and you countered that you’d merely agreed to a look at the house. No decision had yet been made, though the only reason your mother entertained the notion was the desperately needed money. And that had been your only winning point of contention.
You didn’t want the strange man living in your space anymore than she did but you also realised that you couldn’t possibly go on as you were. You went to the door, the thicker one open as the screen door was the only shield from the bitter late autumn air. You heard the creak of your mother’s rocking chair and the deep voice of a man. You recognized it even after a single meeting.
“...hauling wood, ma’am.” Was all you caught as you peered through the mesh.
“So you work at the lumberyard? My husband worked there before he tucked tail,” Your mother ranted. “That was almost twenty years ago.”
“Just like every other man in the county,” You opened the door. “Ma, I’d be down there too if I hadn’t lucked out.”
“I’m sorry about your husband, ma’am.” Andy slipped in as he stood on the bottom step.
“Don’t call me, ma’am,” Your mother rebuked. “I’m not that old just yet.”
Andy glanced at you and you touched the back of your mother’s chair and stilled it.
“It’s a nice looking house,” Andy broke the silence. “Big property.”
“All that bastard left me,” Your mother swore and leaned on the arm of her chair. “Well, aren’t you going to show the man around.” She pushed back so you were forced to let go of the chair or else sprain your wrist. “Take your shoes off, sir.”
You nodded and waved him up the steps with a wry smirk at your mother. You held open the door as he passed and your mother looked pleased with herself as she rocked again. You let the door clatter behind you as Andy bent to loosen his work boots. He stood as he kicked off his boots and you rubbed your forehead.
“I’m sorry about my mom.” You said. “She’s… stubborn.”
“Don’t you apologize for me, girl.” Your mom called through the screen door and you quickly closed the thicker one.
“Well, nothing too fancy,” You stepped past him into the front room. “Living room, dining room,” You waved your hand back. “Kitchen in the back, bathroom as you walk through and the laundry room just on the other side.” You lowered your arm and neared the stairs. “Your room would be up here.”
You turned and he followed you up the noisy old stairs. The carpet at the top was faded and tattered and did little to cushion the hard wooden floor as you walked along the hallway.
“My mother’s is at the end. Mine is to the left and yours is right here,” You opened the door next to yours. “Looks out onto the yard, so not the worst.”
“Mmm, okay,” He paced around the bed and went to the window. He felt the lace curtains as he gazed out through the glass.
“I’ll empty out the closet. Probably why it smells like mothballs.” You explained. “Pretty simple, we share the common spaces and clean up after ourselves.” You shrugged. “My mom will leave you alone as long as you don’t get in her way. She usually stays in her room if she’s not out front.”
“That’s fine. I won’t be here much.” He said. “Just really need a place to sleep.”
“There is one other thing. My mother...she has some issues. She gets manic and sometimes… well, I can take care of her but I don’t want you to be blind-sided. She’s on medicine but she’s still adjusting and--” You gulped. “It took me a lot of convincing but if you want the space, it’s yours, at least until spring.”
“I don’t have a lot of choices but I’d be happy to.” He said. “And don’t worry so much about your mother. I was a lawyer, I saw a lot worse in the courtroom.”
“Mmm,” You tucked your hands in your pocket. “Well, anytime after Sunday the room will be ready for you.”
“Sunday,” He repeated. “Okay, that works for me. Should I call ahead?”
“Uh, yeah, you have my number,” You replied and paused as you heard your mother hollering. You huffed and rolled your eyes.
“I really hope it’s a squirrel and not a bear again,” You swept out of the room and stomped down the stairs. You went outside as your mother was tossing a stone and shouting at it, the wind chime tinkling and swaying from the porch. “Ma, it’s just a bird.”
“It damn nearly tore the chime off,” She sneered. “Your grandmother made me that.”
“I know, I know, just sit down.” You nudged her back to her chair. “You forgot your tea inside, do you want it?”
“My tea?” She blinked. “Oh, I forgot. Again.”
“It’s okay,” You patted her shoulder as you went back inside. Andy knelt as he pulled his boots back on.
“Everything okay?” He asked as he looked up at you.
“It’s fine,” You assured him. “Sometimes her meds make her a little jumpy. And forgetful.”
“Anything I can do?” He asked as he stood.
“Keep clear of her if you can,” You advised. “I’m not going to sugar coat it. She’s a lot to handle and she’s not very keen on men.”
“The latter I guessed,” He chuckled. “I’ll get out of your hair and see you next week.”
“Next week,” You confirmed as he pushed open the door. “Drive safe.”
“Thanks,” He called over his shoulder as he stepped out onto the porch. “I’ll be seeing you.” He said to your mother as he passed. “When I come back,” He stopped on the second step and you got closer to listen. “I can fix that feeder.” He pointed at the broken bird feeder under the tree. “If you like?”
“Oh,” Your mother grumbled. “Well, I think that… might be nice. As long as it keeps ‘em away from my chimes.”
“I think it will,” He smiled. “My-- I used to have a feeder just like that.”
Your mother was quiet as she stopped rocking. Finally she cleared her throat. “You have a nice day, sir.”
“You too,” He nodded and continued down the steps.
You watched him go to his pick-up before you spun back and went to fetch your mother’s cup. You returned to the porch as he was backing out and you gave the lukewarm tea to your mother.
“Friendly,” She commented and took a sip. “The ones from the city usually don’t have such good manners.”
“Mhmm,” You grumbled. “Do you need me to warm that up?”
“Go on, girl,” She brushed you away. “I can stomach cold tea.”
🍂
Andy showed up on Monday. He called you the night before to let you know he’d be there and so you planned a trip into town with your mother to let him get settled. You waited until his truck pulled up, his tires crushing the pine cones and twigs as it neared. He got out and you handed him the spare key you had made. Your mother wore a parka and shivered in the car.
“We’ll be gone for a few hours,” You crossed your arms as you resisted the chill that nestled over the top of your scarf. “So you should be able to get settled in.”
“Thanks,” He turned the key over in his hand. “I’ll be discreet.”
“She’s in a good mood today. Well, until she starts complaining I left her in the car so long,” You rubbed your gloved hands together. “I’ll go. There’s logs by the fireplace in the living room. Heating downstairs isn’t so good but it makes a difference.”
“I’ll figure it out,” He assured. “You ladies have fun.”
“Ladies?” You arched a brow but he was hardly bothered. You nodded and left him.
You got in the jeep as your mother played with the radio and bemoaned the downfall of modern music. You shifted out of park and backed up as you tuned out her and Patsy Cline fizzling from the local station.
You went to Gerry’s, the only proper restaurant in town. Breakfast was often better than the evening’s affair and you showed up just in time for the lunch menu. Your mother gabbed with the waitress a little too long and you resisted apologizing on her behalf, knowing it would only sour her already brittle mood.
You ate and grabbed a pie from the display at your mother’s behest. She stopped by Geraldine’s thrift shop and bought another figurine for her collection; the porcelain wolves decorated her room and even some of the front room. You grabbed a few books you hadn’t read before and checked the time. You were certain you’d wasted enough time for Andy to get figured out.
As you drove back, the pale sky made the trees seem bleak in comparison. The first snow was imminent.
“You should make a nice dinner tonight.” Your mother said.
“Oh, I should?” You asked.
“I’m pooped. I gotta lay down.” She huffed. “But you always made a good chili. You can send that man off with a good lunch tomorrow if you make a big pot.”
“Mom,” You looked at her briefly. “You know his name.”
“I do. And that’s it.” She crossed her arms. “He seems nice enough but you never know. He’s not from around here.”
“No he’s not. But no one around here would pay what you want for that room.” You argued. “You’re lucky he’s from the city, they’re used to paying a fortune for shit.”
“Watch your mouth.”
“You said it was alright, ma. You agreed to it. It’s too late to send him off now.” You muttered.
“I like him,” She sneered. “I don’t like the way you look at him.”
“What?” You scoffed. “You’re ridiculous.”
“If I was younger, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at him. He’s handsome but I do wonder how he ended up here. You said he was a lawyer.”
“All sorts end up here, ma,” You countered. “Kenneth used to be an ad exec and now look at him; he sells sod and salt.”
“Still,” She rubbed her chin. “You’re young. When I was your age, well, if I had been alone all the time like you are, I’d be rearing to go.”
“Ma,” You were almost laughing. “You’re crazy.”
“That’s what the pills are for,” She retorted. “But I’m not blind.”
“Okay,” You said dryly as you rolled your eyes. “I think maybe I should be keeping my eye on you.”
“Ha, maybe I should give you a few pills,” She chuckled. “I’m not that mad.”
“Alright,” You gripped the steering wheel. “I’ll make chili but don’t go on about this in front of him. It’s gonna be weird enough.”
“Sure,” She harrumphed. “I’ll be good.”
🍂
As you took the lid off the deep pot, a billow of steam went up and the front door opened and closed. Your mother sat at the table after her nap and sipped on a hot tea. You listened to the floor groan as Andy stopped by the door and proceeded with lighter footfalls into the kitchen.
“I fixed the bird feeder,” He clapped his hands together. “Your chimes should be safe.”
“Oh, thank you,” Your mother beamed. “So sweet of you, Andy.”
“Not at all,” He said. “Simple work. Didn’t realise how much easier life is when you don’t have to think so much.”
He neared the table and grabbed the back of an empty chair. “You mind if I sit?”
“Go on,” Your mother was unusually chipper. “So how’d you fair? Got all your stuff unpacked?”
“Yep,” He answered, “Mmm, whatever you’re cooking smells good.”
“Chili,” You answered as you replaced the lid. “Twenty more minutes at most.”
“Chili. I remember--” He stopped and cleared his throat. You turned and watched him as he smoothed the front of his shirt, his fingers grabbing at the tie that wasn’t there. “I knew someone who used to make chili but it wasn’t chili chili. White beans and turkey… good but, I don’t think I’ve had real chili in forever.”
“You go down to Gerry’s on a Thursday and you’ll get some,” Your mother intoned.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Andy gave a small smile. “How was your day in town?”
You didn’t answer and looked to your mom. She frowned at you but quickly wiped it away.
“It was nice. You know, me and my daughter live together but we really don’t spend too much time together.”
“That’s great,” He said but barely seemed to see your mother as he watched you lean against the stove. “Well, hopefully I can help out some more and you can find more time for each other.”
“Uh huh,” You muttered. “Hopefully.”
🍂
That night, your mother went to bed and you retired soon after her. Andy had been quick to hide after dinner and you were thankful for that. You told him you’d set aside a container for his lunch and he was almost sheepish at the gesture.
You climbed up the stairs and slipped inside your room. The night was quiet and no moon floated above to shine in the windows. It was almost eerie. You changed into your pajamas and climbed into bed with your laptop. You turned off the lamp, content to type in the dark and eke out a few more paragraphs for your latest commission.
As the night wore on, only the tapping of keys filled your ears and you found yourself slumping lower against the headboard. You flipped onto your stomach and hugged the pillow as you tried to keep going, yawns blurring your vision as your body resisted your determination.
You didn’t recall falling asleep but it was a haze of visions. Your head swirled with your mother’s voice and Andy’s deep blue eyes. A blizzard turned the landscapes white and a wolf’s howl made you shiver.
You woke, still on your stomach, an arm beneath your pillow, and your laptop dead. You groaned as you rolled over. The grey light of dawn filled your room and the frigid air raised bumps on your skin as your blanket was twisted around you.
A floorboard creaked along the hallway and you sat up. You blinked at the shadow that flitted away through the crack between your bedroom door and the frame. You had closed your door; you were sure of it. Entirely certain as your door always stuck terribly and was quite a pain in the ass.
You drew a blanket around your shoulders as you stood and went to the door. You blinked and peeked out into the hall. There was nothing, no one. You sighed as your eyes froze on the closed bathroom door. You heard the sudden whine of the shower and the rattling of the pipes. Andy must have woken up to get ready for work.
You always wondered how the lumberjacks could handle the early mornings, especially in the winter. You turned back and closed your door. Your feet were cold on the floorboards and the rug was just as unwelcoming as you crossed to the window. Snowflakes blurred the horizon and shrouded the dawn.
Winter had come and you sensed a storm brewing.
