Do you think Lydia and Richard were actually married? I kinda got from the whole "if I dont do this now ill never do it" thing that it was being married she was afraid of. Astrid is always mentioned as a Deetz, never given a different last name like she would have had her parents been married.
"Astrid, I loved your father, but our relationship was over long before the accident."
Nope! I never thought Lydia and Richard got married. To me, they seemed like a long-term boyfriend and girlfriend, who accidentally got the girl pregnant and stayed together for the kid. I think Lydia was the one who initiated their breakup, which lead to Richard going on his "adventure" and met his horrible fate. Her guilt is probably what stopped her from seeing Richard.
On the contrary, a magazine calls Lydia a "pill-popping widow" so even if they were married, I think it's safe to assume it wasn't for very long and they realized marriage just wasn't for them. And yeah, Richard wasn't confirmed to have a last name, so I doubt they got married unless he became Richard Deetz 🤣

the most interesting character (for me) in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is Richard...
merely on HOW DID HE BAG LYDIA? yeah sure he's into horror movies and big into the environment (I'm not sure if anybody caught that subtle reference to how her love interest in Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian) but that's it? I kinda wanted more about him it feels like a weird subplot that comes and goes...
another thing he kinda of looked too. idk how to say this without sounding mean normal? he's very conventionally attractive. yeah he played a musketeer of course he is but idk. I feel like someone who would've fit the role better is a Benicio del Toro type or maybe the actor himself. he 100% would play the role of a "weirdo" who would obsess over horror movies and dress his kid in morbid halloween costumes. lol
he even looks like Jenna Ortega a bit too. ESPECIALLY when he was younger!

maybe it's just me... lol

Am I the only one that rolled my eyes and sighed in the theater during the Beetlejuice sequel when Lydia said the thing about the 600-year-old age gap between her and Beetlejuice? There were so many other things she could have brought up, like him being gross, or crazy, or… I dunno, dead? That’s the one she came up with? It felt so unnecessary.

The "Weird Dream theory" of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may be plausible based on this name connection.
If you haven't seen the film yet, then go freaking watch it already! It's been out for 3 weeks now. Spoilers below.
Exhibit A
The two songs that Betelgeuse lip-synced sang to Lydia are "Right Here Waiting" and "MacArthur Park".
The former being a timeless love song, and what I think is probably the best song that Betelgeuse could ever choose to convey his everlasting love for Lydia. And the fact that the song got released in 1989? A year after they met? It may does come across as creepy, and kinda scary, than romantic. (I personally thought it was romantic).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The latter being a stroke of genius as a climax musical choice. It definitely has the Beetlejuice touch to it like with the Banana Boat (Day-O) song, where you think it has no business being in the film, and then suddenly you can't imagine the film not having the song in it. The message and story behind "MacArthur Park", while sad when you hear it, is Betelgeuse wacky. The Juice boxes (Beetlejuice fans) have talked about how the song is Betelgeuse knowing that the wedding ain't gonna come to the conclusion he wants it to be, but still brought the song on to drive home his feelings to Lydia, him saying farewell (for now) and telling her she's the only one, ever, for him whether she wants to be or not.
Tumblr media
Exhibit B
The names of the singers who sang the songs.
"Right Here Waiting" - Richard Marx
"MacArthur Park" - Richard Harris (and note that in the wedding scene, Betelgeuse used RH's version, not Donna's or any other covers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exhibit C
The name of Lydia's former partner who she once loved, the father of her only child.
RICHARD!
Tumblr media
In conclusion
It was all a dream that Betelgeuse shared/gave to Lydia. He serenaded her with a RICHARD Marx song, coordinated a musical performance centering on RICHARD Harris' version of MacArthur Park for their wedding, and named the guy she had a kid with (then made him dead) in the dream RICHARD, the same name as the singers.
Tumblr media
Call me out if this has been posted or mentioned before in other platforms. I'd like to read the discussions.
Again, this is a theory and must be taken with a grain of salt, it's just fun to connect the dots and give potential fanfiction and headcanon worthy material.

Richard deserves his own post, I think.
Tumblr media
They could have dressed him up as anything for this Halloween snapshot but they chose a dead guy with sunken eyes. Betelgeuse could have serenaded Lydia with any of the hundreds of great love ballads yet he chose not just one, but two songs sung by men named Richard.
Richard embodies the characteristics of both of Lydia's absentee parents. His death mirrors Charles' in its humorous and chaotic nature yet isn't framed that way within the plot. Charles' was a complete joke but Richard's is taken very seriously. He could have died any number of ways, but he died a watery aquatic predator death. In a film about death, it's too big of a coincidence.
As well, he was gone from Lydia's life long before he died, much like her mother. That his body was never found also forced us to briefly question whether or not he even was dead, just like we have with Lydia's mom for the past thirty years.
He serves no obvious purpose in the plot but to heal Astrid's trauma, and let's be real. The audience doesn't care about Astrid's trauma. We care about Lydia's. The argument could be made that he exists to mend the rift between Astrid and Lydia, but we don't need him for that. Jeremy accomplishes that all on his own.
Following the dreamverse, if we look at Astrid as a Lydia-proxy and Richard as a creation of Betelgeuse's, a "gift" of sorts, he suddenly makes all the sense in the world. Betelgeuse abandons Lydia in the afterlife (an inexplicably out-of-character choice outside of this context considering his three decades of pining) solely to allow her this healing reconciliation with Richard, the joint personification of her neglectful parents.
Richard saves Lydia because her real father never did.
Her real father sold her to Betelgeuse for a handful of snakes.

can we talk about lydia's (ex?) husband/astrid's dad for a moment? spoilers below.
his name was richard, right?
first, let me say that he looked SO familiar and i couldn't place him until i googled and realized that he played captain cristóbal 'cris' rios in star trek: picard.
alright, now that that's out of the way --
remember in the first beetlejuice movie how IIRC otho makes a reference about how people who commit suicide become civil servants in the afterlife?
and then miss argentina says something like, "if i knew then what i know now, i wouldn't have had my little accident," and then shows off her slit wrists.
why was richard working as a civil servant in the passport office? did he kill himself? did lydia suspect that's why she couldn't see him, but she didn't want to tell astrid?
or is it just some big plot hole?
oh, and one more random thought --
didn't love the baby beetlejuice scenes. reminded me too much of dead baby dawn from trainspotting.

Lydia's "missing" years: Questions.
What happened to Lydia between the end of the first film and the beginning of the second?
At the end of Beetlejuice she's happy with her new Godparents, the Maitlands. Her Dad and Step-Mom are learning how to co-habit with the dead.
Tumblr media
What happened after?
I assume Lydia went to high school and college. Which college? What was her Major? What did she want to do for a living?
Did she see ghosts? I think based on what we know from the sequel she's always been able to; she saw the Maitlands right away. So college was probably a trip for her. Seeing dead students in the dorm who committed suicide, died in Frat hazing, died doing dares, or just from sheer stupidity. Imagine sharing a dorm room with a normie girl and the ghost of a girl who croaked from alcohol poisoning during a party and the guys put her in her bed thinking she'd just "sleep it off."
So what was Lydia doing after college? Did she even go to college? Charles and Delia might have funded her to be able to travel, taking photos.
How old was she when she met Richard? Were they together for quite a while before Lydia had Astrid? Why didn't they marry?
If Astrid is 16 and Lydia is 51, then Lydia had her when she was 35. That's really late to become a first-time mother. Most women that age have some difficulty getting pregnant. Was Astrid planned or a happy surprise?
Did she see Beetlejuice, even just glimpses, while she was at college and before she met Richard? Beej says she's been "ignoring" him for 30 years. That indicates she knew he was still around.
Tumblr media
Lydia is in New York when she sees him in the Ghost House audience. So distance isn't a problem for him, probably due to their "psychic connection." She may have been able to see him while at college, while abroad, anywhere.
How much does he see? Did he see her dating? Masturbating? Fucking? Giving birth?
If he did, did Lydia know? If she was no longer aware of him, when did that start?
We know Lydia fell apart when Richard died. Why did it hit her so hard? By her own admission she and Richard were out of love long before that. She tells Astrid "I loved your father." But something happened. Just plain old growing apart? Something else?
That's when Rory stepped in, the bastard.
There's a lot of fodder for fanfics.
