Just in Time Shucking demo! Wild PEI oysters - need a light touch when opening these Naturally shaped shells. Meanwhile, back @starfishoyster @beaumontdrinks and I would wax poetic of barley hops water & oysters - with inspirational chats came the idea of #ScrimshawOysterStout using the #Singlebed @greengablesoysters #wilds Sláinte & HappyShucking Stephen! Posted @withrepost • @beaumontdrinks I shuck a LOT more oysters since the lovely and no-longer-on-Insta Maggie got me this great @shuckerpaddy knife. And with boxes of 25 oysters now on sale at @metroontario for, I think, $13, it pays for itself! (This is an entirely unsponsored post. I just really like this knife and oysters, and am excited about digging into a fresh box in a few hours.) #PEI #Oysters #Merroir #Terroir #Shucking #OysterBar #WildOysters #OysterStout #OysterKnives #KnifeMaker #Beer #BeerWriter #Author #ChattyPaddy #OystersAndBeer #IllDrinkToThat #LetsGetShucking #KeepOnShucking #ShuckinglyYoursPaddy (at Scarborough, Toronto) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl_PKB2OR88/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This blog led to a book. Sort of. Check out “Tapping the West”
Tumblr media
So, it sure isn’t 2016 anymore. A lot has happened since! Like the installation of strange(r) leaders. An extraordinary reckoning with racism. A global pandemic. And it’s all still happening with no sign of letting up.
Utterly insignificant in comparison, but nevertheless in the midst of it all, came this, my first book - Tapping the West: How Alberta’s Craft Beer Industry Bubbled out of an Economy Gone Flat.
I’m writing about it here, in what I promise will be the last post of One Year of Alberta Beer, because this blog is what inspired it. If you read any of the posts below, you’ll know that I spent Jan.1 to Dec. 31 of 2016 just trying to get to know Alberta craft beer. What a lovely, overwhelming introduction it was.
When it was all over (the year, not the beer), and the industry would go on to double in size in 2017 then continue to grow beyond that, I decided that I needed to know more. No - I decided that the world needed to know more.
I wondered:
How was it possible that this industry was taking off in this way?
What factors were conspiring to make every trip to the liquor store an hour-long exercise in indecision?
What did the rapid growth say about and mean to Alberta?
Where was it all headed?
And much, much more!
Happily, a publisher called Touchwood Editions also felt the world should know. So there you go: Tapping the West, which I never imagined would ever exist back in that very innocent time of early 2016, is now available for your enjoyment and edification. (Get yours today!)
How about my timing, huh? When this book came out in May, we were in lockdown, scrubbing our hands raw and scrolling endlessly through Netflix. What a world. Alberta beer isn’t going to be the thing that saves it, but I can’t help but think the fact that there’s a lot more of the stuff around right now is good thing.
And that’s not just because the beer is so great. It’s bigger than the beer. It’s the spirit of it all. If only we could tap that.
I hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for reading my blog. The end.

[Drabble, Modern AU Ludovick] Ghost
It felt stupid, silly, even, to keep her with him, but he always did.  Even when he was working undercover, when the ring wouldn’t have made any sense for the story he’d concocted, the one he had to stick to, to keep both himself, and the investigation alive, its cold metal was pressed against his chest, looped on a chain, hidden beneath layers of clothing.  It was one of the few things he’d managed to preserve of her memory, which was difficult, given that he’d never known her.
Geula Morgenstern had been the daughter of the famed author Hershel Morgenstern, and whereas her father had been known for his efforts at preserving accounts of the Holocaust, as well as writing a few successful children's picture books, Geula existed in this odd sort of limbo as only the missing, presumed dead, wife of Reginald von Diehl, founder of Von Diehl Firearms.  She was a ghost with no story but that of her demise, never a living, breathing person that Ludovick could know, or even hope to understand.  Had she been kind, or cruel?  Something in-between?  How had she felt about him, about his father?  Had she wanted more than what she’d ended up with?  What had been her hopes, her dreams, her deepest desires which she kept safe within the confines of her mind?  The magazine interviews offered little, as they mostly consisted of his father talking, telling little of the actual ambitions of his wife, who seemed to exist only to springboard a cause for the interview itself.  Reginald seemed to relish any opportunity to mention his wife’s Jewish heritage, but the meat of his words always rolled back around to him, to his business, to the things he was doing, never Geula.
Reginald had used the ring as a prop, at first.  He’d brandished the broken chain during press conferences, late nights in front of their home surrounded by bulky cameras and microphones, tearfully begging for the safe return of his wife, holding the one shred of evidence that perhaps, she’d struggled to get away from her kidnappers.  Of course, once it had become clear that Geula wasn’t coming home, Reginald had left the chain and the ring in the attic to rot, and they had only been found by pure chance, a young Ludovick stumbling across it as father and son prepared to move to America as part of a new phase for Von Diehl Firearms, and if things went according to plan, a rather lucrative arms deal.
His father couldn’t deny him his right to the ring, even if he’d looked upon it with resentment every time he saw the boy fiddling with it under the dining room table, or turning it over in his fingers idly as they sat in the car.  Ludovick had always assumed it was because the memory of his mother was painful to Reginald, given how she’d disappeared so suddenly, with no closure.  He had tried to be sensitive about it, and over time it come to rest beneath his shirt, always tucked away, out of sight, out of mind, the ghost not allowed to haunt his father, even if they were both aware of its presence.
Was he a fraud for keeping it, after all these years?  He had only seen her in photographs, few of them even personal ones, mostly cut from magazines and newspapers he’d managed to rescue from crumbling to dust within shoeboxes.  Besides, he wasn’t Jewish, and the Star of David which covered the flat top of the ring taunted him with his complete lack of knowledge, like he was a stranger holding onto something that wasn’t his, that was never meant to fall into his hands.  The damned thing even fit his fingers, clearly having been meant for a man, but he couldn’t bring himself to wear it, being an imposter if he did.  His father had never imparted any of that knowledge upon him, having claimed to be Catholic, even if he’d never adhered to a damn bit of Catholicism’s tenants, and Ludovick felt stupid even attempting to research at this point.  He knew where he stood as far as religion went, at least now, but he knew that if his mother had worn this ring around her neck for God only knew how long, that it had to have been important to her.  Didn’t she deserve that, for her only child to honor her memory?  How could he honor that memory, if all she was to him was a ghost, an image on a glossy magazine page, faded with age, frozen and lifeless?  What had this ring meant to her?  Had an ancestor owned it, had she found it, had someone bought it for her?  Was she even practicing, or was it more of a cultural thing, perhaps something in-between?  He would never know.
He would carry that comforting weight about his neck, because it would always remind him to ask the question of how to best carry on her spirit, even if the answer never came.  Her ghost could have touched him when he felt God’s blessings come upon him, and he wouldn’t have known her hand from that of any other.

Milk Stout // EXIT _________________________________________________ Happy Father’s Day! This is my first Father’s Day and in order to celebrate and to farewell the dreaded wraith that is winter I’m treating myself to this milky little cow girl. My son is crazy about his milk so I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about. Of course I’m having my lactose in the form of a milk stout not breastmilk, I’m not crazy! (My wife wouldn’t let me have a go no matter his much I tried.) Exit’s Milk Stout is as smooth as the teats of an udder and sweeter than kissing your high school sweetheart in a field of sugar cane. Aroma and flavour are both full of roasted malt, dark chocolate and sweet vanilla. Mouthfeel is creamy like an albino yet it’s thinner than the dense colour suggests. It’s very nice way to celebrate a special day but try to find it before the glorious beast that is summer turns up! 5.2% ABV 73/100 @exitbrewing #milkstout #stout #beer #craftbeers #beerstagram #beerblog #beerreview #beertography #beeroftheday #beergram #beergeek #beergasm #beerpic #beerporn #beernerd #fathersday #firstfathersday #breastmilk #dense #craftbeer #craftbeerporn #craftbeernotcrapbeer #craftbeerlover #fanaticbeer #beerphoto #bier #australianbeer #beerwriter #winter : @thewayyououghtto

[Drabble, Modern AU Ludovick] Nightmare
The dry heat of Arizona, nor Afghanistan had never made him sweat so, he thought as he stumbled into the shower, bleary eyes still adjusting to the dawn-breaking gloom of the unfamiliar apartment.  He could still feel the tacky pull of the sheets against his skin, like grasping hands that wanted to drag him under to some dark place from which he would never return.  When he had awoken he had pushed them violently aside, their touch strangling, oppressive.  He had to wash the sensations away, the claustrophobic feeling of blood soaking his clothes, his skin, as he helplessly watched her, motionless on the floor, tangled in a chair that had been turned to splinters by gunfire.  He couldn’t see it clearly, not if he’d tried to conjure up the memory in his waking moments, but in his nightmares her glassy stare was always leveled right at him, and he knew that before she had died in that sudden, violent moment, she had realized his betrayal.
It was jarring, but he needed to feel the cold water against his skin, burning far too hot on a November morning.  The shower wall was solid enough, and he let himself all but lay against it, arms wrapped around his chest as he shivered, searching for some modicum of calm, of steadiness, of anything that would tether him to the here and now.  Ludovick tried to recall what he had been taught during his brief stint in therapy about breathing, counting, something like that, but it was too difficult to conjure as the freezing water that left the shower-head pelted his scarred body like icy bullets.  The air in his lungs rattled, his muscles twitched, his mind swam as though the water was ten feet high, but in that cold he could breathe again, and that was enough.

2 recent Op-shop purchases for my beer library. Willie Simpson's "Amber & Black" (2001) is a truly excellent lesson in writing about Australian beer. Plain English, well constructed, short sentences, and plenty of flavour.
