We've hit the stage of Echoes of Evalas' creation that I'm spending a lot of my quiet time with scenes and characters, including time that is usually occupied by...well, nothing creative. At least, it hasn't been creative time in a long while.
Some of the dearest and most important moments of my young creative daydreaming was before bed. If I might overshare, it was specifically as I lay in bed and tried to drown out unpleasantness I'd hear from other rooms of the house. I'll spare you the details.
I didn't even have music at the time, though in later years as I became a depressed teen, I'd throw some music on my computer to fantasize and fall asleep to.
Oftentimes, these stories and characters I'd contemplate were favorites from various things I enjoyed. In time they'd adapt and evolve into something of my own, in worlds and stories of my own making.
Sometimes it wasn't so grand. There were no sweeping narratives or adventures. Just some self insert character being comforted by a friend or a lover.
Recent nights, I've thrown on my EoE playlist and let my mind wander. I haven't really done that in a long time. Haven't had the need to these days. I'm not running from much. Life is quiet. But as I start to turn over more stones and find what's beneath some of the characters and themes I'm exploring, I've found myself here again.
I don't know if anyone will love what I am making, and I never have. Every person who has let my characters and stories into their hearts means a whole lot to me, though. I've not forgotten when all of this was nothing more than a comfort to myself to soothe away all my fear and loneliness.
As it all starts to come together I'm seeing a stark difference between where I am at as a writer and creative in general in comparison to BitterSweet Chapter 1, as I've revisited it recently.
The pieces were there but it's so clear to me that I didn't have the conviction that I do now. I didn't have the comfort or security of knowing that I can take chances and be bold. I thought I had to color within the lines, and lacked the confidence to really let it rip.
So as much as I've been looking forward, I've also looked back. Further back than I typically like to.
When Charlie said he never thought he'd be this old, that was real shit man. I was a morbid kid. I have a crystal clear memory of being on a school bus in Washington state. Blink 182 just dropped an album. I hate Blink 182, but I listened with a friend whose face I can barely remember. As the high schoolers got on the bus I remember thinking...damn, I'll never be that old.
Not sure what could possess a child to feel that way. Or how that feeling could linger for years. It took a long time to find enough faith in myself to live. Now that I've got it, I think I'm encouraged to give breath to those lost dreams and wandering fantasies. Echoes of Evalas is an exploration of that.
I can't even grasp what that really means yet.
Things like faith, anger, insecurity, and longing for change. I've rattled a lot of locked doors while digging up this story and putting it together.
I am uneasy. That's probably how I've ended up writing this essay in bed, and boy is it a rambling one.
There was a point somewhere. I am excited for what's to come, but uneasy. Not out of fear that anyone will like it or content brained thinking like that. More like...a reverence for this magical thing I've found. Storytelling is magical for me. And that's not me waxing poetic, I think there's something terrifying and beautiful about it. It is the thing I was made to do, and the actual experience of crafting a story like this isn't just fun. I'm removing chains from my soul.
If that ain't magic, I don't know what is.
Anywho, I need to sleep. If you read all that, thank you for putting up with my yapping. 💖

who i think the heartstoppers characters favorite music artists are from my limited music knowledge
Charlie - Will Wood. me/myself/i has been top of his spotify wrapped for years
Nick - precoming out, whatever people around him put on. post coming out remains the same but in his room alone its all cavetown. charlie will tell him oneday about the fact he can infact see what he's been playing for the past 8 hours on loop through spotify, but he'll tell nick that while giving nick tickets to a cavetown concert (:
Imogen - pre questioning her idenity, swiftie. while questioning and after? look she has a lot of chapell roan to listen to if she wants to fix her spotify wrapped
Tao - the soundtrack of whatever movie he watched most recently, and now love songs elle sends him! his playlist is a mess and youd be shocked to hear it and then realize hes no technically a theater kid
Elle - no real specific artists? indie stuff, some of this some of that. a lot of love songs and light indie rock, and atleast one song from all her friend's favorite artists. oneday cavetown will join the playlist once nick finally accepts the aux
Darcy - girl in red through and through. you can be nonbinary and scream girl in red! fuck gender roles!
Tara - steven universe and adventure time. she used to be into both, she's barely into them anymore. but give her the aux and holy shit why is it good! 🎶let me drive a van into your hearttttt🎵
Issac - audiobooks. it's all audiobooks. however! he does love a song or an album with a story to it! it's unlikely he'll listen to any of it more than once.
Tori - "probably something underground" no. its billie eilish, its marina, its coldplay, and it's the front bottoms, its paramore. if you see what she's listening to and say anything negative about it being 'mainstream' or 'basic', she'll either ignore you or tel you 'their popular for a good reason prick'

intro post (finally)
ive debated making an intro post because first off ive been on tumblr for two years and I never got around to it and secondly I am really really horrible at talking about myself because what is to much info and what it to little info and the cycle continues but im giving it a shot because I feel like my mutuals have no idea who I am lmao
HAI my name is Charlie im 15 (18+ I dont mind if you follow me but please dont dm me thank you :]) I use jasper as an online name kind of (at this point its just reserved for my best friend ace but I dont mind if other people call me jasper since I still love the name)
my pronouns are he/him but im also perfectly comfortable with common neopronouns (it/its xey/xem) if you wanna get funky with it.
im a self diagnosed autistic and ARFID (if you dont know what that is its an eating disorder where certain factors make you avoidant and restrictive of the food you eat and it has nothing to do with physical appearance. for me its linked to my autistic sensory issues(ALSO OCD NOW?!!? WHAT THE FUCK?!!?)) I have depression and anxiety and the only reason I mention this is because I relate my mental health to my fav characters in tv shows and books and stuff so if you see me posting about them like everything is connected lol
(my a03 is ghostwithfeet if you want to see me be silly and project my weird life onto fictional characters (I am the most inconsistent updater in the world please expect nothing from me if you even ask about a project it will scare me and like I turtle I will crawl into my shell never to see the light of day again))
my interests really vary about current hyperfixations but heres the master list
current hyperfixs
stranger things specifically Byler but mostly mike wheeler (this has turned into a special interest(I DO NOT support Noah schnapp or another of the other cast members who are in support of the inhumane actions the Israel government are doing. I am pro saving innocent civilians. I know that this can be controversial to be such a big fan of this show and honestly I have a lot of complex feelings on the matter but im autistic as previously mentioned and its my special interest and It won't leave my brain even if im not directly interacting with the media so im gonna yap about it on my blog thank you.))
also just Finn wolf hard for some reason (check out his band the Aubreys its awesome. also check out a recent movie he was in called when you finished Saving the world. it means a lot to me)
donna tarts the goldfinch book
old special interests/hyperfixs
the percy Jackson universe specifically nico di Angelo
the IT universe specifically reddie and Beverly marsh but more leaning towards richie tozier (see what I mean with the Finn wolf hard thing)
dead boy detectives !!
doctor who (I haven't even finished David tenants doctor yet so please no spoilers)
Alice oseman content (never read loveless or iwbft but ive read all of her other stuff)
paper girls graphic novel
other interests
the good place tv show
Kathleen Glasgows book girl in pieces
the walking dead comics including the clementine spin off graphic novels
um yeah thats all I can think of for now
my fav musicians/bands
florence and the machine
indigo de Souza
Kevin Atwater
searows
the Aubreys
sadurn
the cranberries
soccer mommy
runo plum
nep
lala lala
the smiths
hospital bracelet
Chappell roan
AURORA
Madilyn Mei!
Elliot smith
(my music taste is all over the place and is also very seasonal and I have a bunch of underground artists I dont listen to but I am here to give good recs I promise my playlists are fire)
we've gotten to the part of the intro post where im wondering if this is way to much information so sorry if I overshared idk but hope we can be silly mutuals or friends if you want (never be scared to shoot the friendship shot I would love to yap with y'all)
also since this is taking over my other pinned post I just want to put this as an honorary spot and let everyone know that my old pinned post was a quote from radio silence and that Aled last is me and I am him and the February Friday plot line is actually me and it makes me sick how much I resonate with that book

🎸🚨🌹🍷for balthazar perhaps?
Sorry this is coming so late!!! My brain stopped working for a little while. Thank you for the ask and for your patience. :') Under a cut for length...
[prompt list]
🎸 (electric guitar) - What’s your character’s music taste like? Do they have one or two artists they play on repeat or do they have a varied and eclectic collection of music? Do they like mainstream artists or prefer underground musicians? What genres do they enjoy?
I'm going to be completely honest, I almost never feel confident what a modern AU version of one of my fantasy characters would be into and I somehow lost track of the only thing that ever made me think "yeah Balthazar would fuck with this." I will spend the next five months attempting to answer this question if I don't cut myself off at a point so. 😭 Sorry to say that I just don't know where his tastes would fall- I've had ideas really and truly all over the map over the years, from mostly into older industrial and kind of an asshole about it to someone who listens mostly to contemporary club dancepop. There must be some truth between these that's eluding me. Maybe the trouble is that to me it feels like he must be in some way or other a Music Guy but yours truly isn't a Music Guy, more just a guy who listens to music...
Idk. I'm sure he's heard Charli XCX. Whatever that means. Maybe I just think it would be kinda funny if he listened to what's on his own playlist. Don't sleep don't eat, just do it on repeat. Or whatever.
(Right before posting I DID remember I recently answered a similar question for Golarion- compensation?)
🚨 (siren) - What’s your character’s relationship with the law? Have they ever been arrested? What for? What are their opinions on law enforcement?
Balthazar's relationship with the law has been changed by becoming the law, but not as much as you might expect. Laws have always been more like "suggestions for other people to follow" to him- laws keep people in check, and taking advantage of people following them is what anyone smart would do. Besides, he understands only too well the ways that keeping people in check keeps the lowly down, and he desperately wants to keep himself from ending up at the bottom. As a ruler he's happy to make laws he doesn't intend to follow meant to shape the behavior of others and make it easier to impose his will on them with the pretext of enforcement- though to some degree he's also ambivalent about a lot of mundane rulemaking and content to allow advisors with more expertise figure out the policy for him to approve. And if it eventually inconveniences him, he'll find a way to go around it, causing more principled advisors and companions no end of despair (when and if they learn). It's a philosophy he shares with Jaethal, who he trusts to help him thread the needle to keep it all from appearing as the flagrant violation it is. His selfish caprice is also one of the places he does see eye to eye with Lander- perhaps disrespect for one's own established rules is the only solid foundation of their advisor relationship.
Balthazar has never been arrested himself, but he's had a lot of close encounters both while traveling and in his home city of Absalom. He grew up poor and spent a lot of time out in the city without his father, frequently occupied by work, around. Being a scruffy, unattended kid gets you a lot of questions from the corner guards when you linger a little too long in certain places or look too hard at something you're not able to buy. He was always good enough at playing meek and innocent to dodge real trouble- even when he had been a bit light fingered. Being an aasimar helped. Being an aasimar always helps at least a little. And that kind of sets the tone for his whole relationship with law enforcement up until the barony: he doesn't trust law enforcement, he doesn't expect it to be on his side, and he's always ready to wriggle out by finding a way to be a bystander or victim when unwelcome attention is on him. He's also happy to let others take the fall for him.
Of course, when it's his laws being enforced to his ends it's just another tool in his kit. He's a class traitor like that- although also acutely aware that it looks bad to be overzealous using it.
🌹 (rose) - What does your oc find attractive in other people? Are these traits found in their friends and/or romantic partners? Are they found in themselves?
(Disclaimer: I am asexual and attraction, especially to physical traits, is sometimes a challenge to imagine)
Physically, Balthazar enjoys toned, strong physiques on any gender. Someone who's well dressed and well spoken also stands out to him, although brazen confidence isn't necessarily compelling- he prefers a partner who's easily flustered and can be pushed around a bit. That's a lot of fun to do. Being pushed back on or talked over is generally a lot less enjoyable, although he's certainly put up with a lot of it in his life. He also does have something of thing for inexperienced partners. Something about the idea of innocence is catnip to him, and he loves playing the part of the worldly lover.
Very little of his preferences reflect aspects of himself; he likes people who are physically unlike him who are far more willing to be dominated than he is. At the same time, I think that perhaps he has an appreciation for people who challenge him that he hasn't fully acknowledged himself, and a certain fondness for steadfast characters who are passionate about what they believe in. An extension of liking people unlike himself, maybe. The emotional extension he's not willing to see.
It's not hard to see how a lot of his preferences map onto recent lovers he's had. Regongar is his type in many ways, although they have incompatible personalities and Balthazar found him far too high maintenance despite being a good time in bed. Tristian is clearly compelling from some angles (naive, inexperienced, easy to tease), but from others might be more challenging- they do push back on Balthazar quite a bit, demand an emotional earnesty from him that he usually isn't comfortable giving a partner, he's not especially comfortable with certain kinds of religiosity, and for a long time they were at frequently at odds and didn't really get along. (And in terms of Vio AU, Vio is physically attractive but really doesn't take being pushed around lying down. Challenging the idea that Balthazar is put off by being challenged...)
🍷 (wine) - Does your oc drink? What kind of alcohol do they enjoy? What are their drinking habits? What kind of drunk are they?
Balthazar drinks! Not as often or as hard as when he was younger and still spending time with people he is firmly no longer in contact with (some of whom died. unrelated, probably.), but the social drinking habit never left him. He likes going out for drinks with friends and acquaintances, or just having a glass of something with dinner. The Stolen Lands are slowly shaping up to not be the worst place to be out in, at least, even if some part of him badly misses the bars and clubs of Absalom he was once up all night in. He tries to avoid being drunk, but the fact is that he's a lightweight and he easily spills into tipsiness if he's not on his guard.
He enjoys fruity things and mixed drinks with interesting flavor profiles, but gravitates towards hard liquor. Brandy is his preference and comes with a sense of class in his mind that he enjoys, but he has a lingering near-nostalgia for the kind of cheap half a step from rubbing alcohol shit he used to do shots of with the other broke apprentices in the neighborhood. Overall, he's not as picky drinking as you might expect and there's a lot he can get down (even if it might not always stay down). He's drunk the goblin liquor with the poison toad in it. It's not even the worst thing he's had. Unfortunately.
When drunk, Balthazar is loud, flirty, confident, and far more honest than he ordinarily is. The "hold my drink and watch this" kind of confident. He's not really proud of it, but a lot of people find drunk Balthazar a lot of fun.
#I enjoyed answering this but it cleanly managed to hit three of the things I struggle the most with fjsca (music attraction and alcohol)#I'm so serious when I say 'what is balthazar's taste in music' is something I've thought about a lot despite not ever landing on an answer#because somehow I feel that he's a person who would have pretty clearly defined and thought out opinions#and I have cycled through multiple possibilities in there and just never settled#ask game#ask me emithing#balthazar lucienne#kaleido-scope-lady#I didn't proofread this before posting so let's hope it's coherent as stitched together as it is

it's tuesday!
last weekend someone taught me how to catch crayfish when wading and this weekend i successfully grabbed one!! proof at the end of the post.
listening: guess (charli xcx, billie eilish): old roommate put this on for me and helloooooo. it's so. yeah. (link is the official music video, warning for flashing) it led me to this playlist cunty trashy slutty skanky which, first of all, excellent playlist name; second of all, what a fucking combination of songs?? something about the juxtaposition of nirvana -> kesha -> korn, etc is. insane in a good way.
last week was bandcamp friday! i last-minute got a few things: finally got sammy rae's "good life" and "let's throw a party", and preordered their newest album "something for everybody". i still need to buy my ticket for their concert near to me this fall. then i got sad snack's full discography for like $5 (the no children ska cover lol), the altogether's "when we were kids" which has been a go-to comfort album for me for a bit, shakey graves "deadstock" anthology, and finally the dear hunter "antimai".
i've been back on the podcast grind, just casually keeping up with stuff like mbmbam sawbones lpotl etc as they come out. most recent mbmbam (episode....730?? jesus christ) has some REALLY funny bits, notably towards the beginning where the cincinnati tornado sirens were being tested and griffin made a comment about the air raid sirens going off again and travis was like ?? dude i'm not in the fucking blitz??? it was very good. there was something else towards the end of the episode that also made me laugh out loud -- oh yes i just went and relistened to the last minute and it's the wish at the end, "i wish my cat would know what it means when i flip him off". so fucking true griffin. i was considering going to one of their tour dates but unfortunately they will be in the nearest city to me when i'm out of town for my second wedding of the fall. ah well
reading: most fallow. lots of little articles for my research.
watching: shane dawson and the art of the constant rebrand - jimmy robins: little retrospective about a guy who i never really liked and haven't thought about in years. i guess he's still around ??? okay. not gonna embed it so you don't get jumpscared by his face.
playing: this is a partial share with watching but last weekend my old roommate and i hung out with one of our friends with the intention of having dinner and crafting. however. we were so tired from kayaking earlier that day that we just ended up watching friend play stray and not crafting at all. it's really cute! i did get Very emotional at the beginning when the cat fell! i was like no!!!
my friend mostly played it but i did do a little bit, it was lots of fun. there was a very funny bit where friend, getting really in the mindset of Being Cat, pulled out a battery pack from a fan and was like "hehe i'm gonna drop it off the roof!" and did it before we could stop her, we were like wait we might need that to solve a puzzle -- but the answer was no it was fine, which is good, because it ended up dropped on a completely inaccessible rooftop ledge below, oopsie.
making: !!! ALL REDACTED !!! i will be able to post some of it next week. i do not know if beloved mutual celestialtourguide reads these regularly but just to be safe. allegedly the glaze kiln WILL be done by wednesday so i will finally know how fucked my guys are. if they're very fucked it'll be like. well, okay, i guess my gift is just money now,
other redacted item is embroidery related!
eating: mostly leftovers from last week, i think im gonna make crisped chickpeas with herbs and garlic yogurt from deb smittenkitchen to use up a zucchini that i have languishing in the fridge. it'll be a nice light lunch.
misc: THE PRELIMINARY EXAM DOCUMENT EXISTS. rejoice. however this comes with the caveat that i don't have a date set yet because i am in the trenches of trying to solve a Very specific problem with my software. the solution is a complete unknown to me as of now. it is in the stage of "putting key words in quotation marks in google scholar and going down the list emailing all the authors like heyyyy help please", which is scary. at least one other person has done something semi-similar - in fact they have my advisor in their acknowledgements thanking them for her editing help lol - so i'm hoping i'm nearly there. because once that is resolved i can FINALLY set a date, which, assuming i pass, also sets the earliest point at which i can give my thesis defense! scary!!
anyway. crayfish proof. it looks like im squishing him way worse than i actually was, he got released and swam away safely do not worry

3) A song you’d choose to introduce someone to your favorite genre
ok so my actual favourite genre is gay pop <3 for that i want to rec this song called she's my religion by pale waves <3 (which i feel might get recced less than others) now to the boring answer. my favourite genre is pop actually, but i would probably choose paper rings by taylor swift! i think it perfectly encapsulates what pop is to me <3 another song from my playlist called new pop (based on vibes alone) is this one: barely on my mind by the regrettes!
4) A song you’d put on a playlist for a character you love
i made a maura playlist recently and so far it's only got "good luck, babe!" by chappell roan and "mastermind" by taylor swift on it so i'm choosing these!
11) A song that makes you dance
recently it's been apple by charli xcx! it's such a bop
19) A song that makes you emotional
i'm listening to look after you by the fray a lot currently and it always makes me want to cry a little but in a comforting way? i love that song it feels like a hug to me 🥺
20) A song you’d put on a playlist for the person who sent you this ask
oh you mean other than the songs i did put on a playlist for you? sjdsj I think I remember you saying you liked proof by paramore so I think you could also like crushcrushcrush or I caught myself! another song is abstract by hozier which is a very comforting song to me and I think you could like it!
#i've got mail💌#em tag <3#i looove these#i love how ask games are like name one name and im without fail always like how about three. or four even <3 have more songs!!#i <3 music

@moldavite tagged me to post my current music faves (thank u kalli a big fucking MWAH goes out to u in this gloomy april evening) so yay!!! i love posting spotify links of course... more belowww. trying so hard for everyone to only post things i havent shared before... trying!!
obviously justice is on repeat - both incognito and saturnine, but im putting here incognito bc it does have the coolest intro and outro everrr like ouuughhhh like justice goes so fucking hard when they choose to have some retro synths................ actually have you listened to planisphere today? you should (talking to everyone)
i havent actually talked about my thoughts on khruangbins new album... which is obviously good but i simply didnt have the time to get into it :/ ive been hoping to give it a good listen, no skips no nothing, on a day off but work has been kicking my ass a bittt... anyway! Pon pón is fun. it came out as a single few weeks back and ive gotten really into it.... sooooo groovy
vampire by sholto is what some of you might recognize from love and food playlist? but ohhhhhh fuckkkkkkk its so good. i dont even know this guy and i didnt think much of it other than "yeah its cool" when i added it to my library. such a great and sinister feeling jazzy number.... AND WHEN THE SAX HITS!!!!!!!!! thats so good. please listen to vampire.
more radio pop!!!!! MORE MAINSTREAM KEVIN PARKER!!!!!!!! i do love tame impala's older/more niche sound just as much as i love him "selling out" (whatever, i will defend his minions and elvis tracks until i die and i will MEAN it) so i am STILL excited for this album even though the roll-out of singles has been consistently awful. but i guess dua lipa is a slow riser always (however long did it take her to peak on charts with 'dont start now'???). plus obviously DANNY!!!!!! YAY FOR DANNY!!!!!
its been a really good spring so far, with so many of my faves releasing music, and obviously that includes sebastian. i remember watching the runway show this was made for, but for some reason i didnt hear the whole track - maybe it was just highlights or something? i really love the synths in this one. its unusual for him to bring the choral singing in the start instead of the climax of the track, but its really well done (as always)! i wish, i wiiiiiiiiish there was something happening about the new album, too.
charli's really being weird recently about everything but goddddddd this slaps so good. im usually not that big on gesaffelstein but i do love ag cook so much. its going to be such a good clubbing record like literally.... its crazy she STILL gets labeled hyperpop. i also like club classics, but b2b is TRULY superior out of this double drop....
the beat of this one is just stuck in my head at all times. its cute! fun! perfect for spring. theyre soon to release their debut album, i need to remember to check it out. while its not SOTY material so far, its just cool and pleasant.
more dance sounds - i like this one a lot! really catchy. ive never really been into 1tbsp but yeahhhhh with this one, i get it.
ok i for sure posted this one before, but its ok bc it got like 0 or 1 likes or something. starwolf is a band im really hopeful for!!!! their 2020 album was pretty interesting, but its their three last singles that got my ears all perked up. some daytime disco vibes in them, and its really cool considering i was somewhat.... underwhelmed by poolside's last album. so, i feel good about starwolf now! fingers crossed for summer, as it would be a perrrrrrrfect record to replay over and over during hot sunny days.
and SUUUUUUUUUUUCHHHHHHHHH a spring favorite for the end. kind of getting lost in this one.... number one song i keep thinking of during sweet sunny walks recently. unbelievably cute. 10000% recommend.
#pogaduchy#not tagging anyone bc idw look like a fucking idiot when no one responds anyway 😭😭😭#Spotify

Haiii :3
Have you listened to the new underscores songs yet? Waddya think?
I can see why they’re b sides because they don’t really fit sound wise, but they’re still amazing!!
Gabby start (who features on a few underscores songs) also released a new single today which is also really good! I haven’t heard his stuff before so I checked it out and I like it better than what he contributes in the features :3
Anyway, happy Friday and good luck!
Yes !! I listened to them this morning I think i need to sit with them for a bit to really listen (i always like to listen to things a few times to catch details, familiarise and like
I think they could've possibly fit in soundwise, but with the steps / parts of the story i'm not sure where they would've slotted in? It's probably a mix of both not being perfect in either aspect and it would make the album over an hour.
I've seen some people saying CCTV was too dark for the main album so things like that too.
I really like it tho !! I'm sure it's all gonna grow on me too so i'll have fun listening to these for the next while.
Stupid (Can't run from the urge) is so fun !! love how it sounds.
I do like gabby's part in locals and I did watch some of the recent vlog on the underscores youtube so it was interesting to watch them come up with that and make the beat.
I only just listened to loansharks for the first time, not as good i suppose. Boys is fun for sure tho :D
gotta update one of my playlists, the one i put this sorta music on is called "skibidibop" lmao has nothing to do with skibidi toliet tho, i only just realised that it's the same word. It just was tryna describe the song in a funny way and i call songs bops all the time hahahah
I've been listening to Wallsocket and Brat by Charli XCX so much lately lol. With lot of other stuff too but those two albums have been the ones rotating for me teheheh.
wayy more wallsocket tho seemingly teheheh.
thank you for the chat !! happy friday and //<good luck>// to you too !!

hi miss dare! i'm a big fan of your work in podfeels. i was wondering, what are your inspirations in regards to the audio medium? any audio dramas you've been enjoying lately?
oh wow, thank you!!!
honestly? im ashamed to admit it but im not the most well versed on my medium of choice.
i make audio dramas and WANT to listen to them but i just keep Not Getting Around To It. truth be told, i actually havent really learned how to do my medium all that well, either. haven't done any education, not even really youtube tutorials, at least not in the modern day.
actually, most of my love of sound design comes from too very insane places.
an old freddie wong video, and two old Overgrowth videos
youtube
when i was a kid and watching a lot of Youtube Sketches i saw the video this is dev commentary for and watched this after. and hearing him talk about layering sounds to make the right effect, specifically the line about "you'll notice how this gunshot sounds contains no actual gunshot sounds", REALLY stuck with me. my lifelong habit of "oh hey same glass shatter sound as die hard, oh hey that door opening creak was used in morrowind" evolved into spotting the source sounds for things, which only got stronger when i was following the development of the sequel to Lugaru (masterpiece, play it), Overgrowth (dogshit, skip it)

these two videos, and me getting into horror movies at the same time, tuned me in to the depths of sound effects and how to spot their sources. not just The Same Stock Sounds, but breaking it down into their constituent parts. a gore sound was no longer a gore sound, now I was hearing the melon getting squished, I was hearing the squeeze ketchup bottle being squeezed and wheezing out air with the teensiest bit of liquid dribbling out, etc. its kind of similar to practical effects, you know? like how that one Dawn Of The Dead headshot kill is a paper mache replica of the actor filled with cherry chunks, dyed red apple pie filling, and condoms. my love of sound is really similar to the average horror buff's love of practical gore effects.
youtube
i just find sound really compelling. sorry to disappoint if you were looking for full sound audio drama production recommendations, because the truth is i have literally never listened to one.
OH. OH ACTUALLY THATS NOT TRUE.
its not an inspiration, its SUPER recent, but Filmcow recently put out an hour long audiodrama dark comedy horror called The Table. its really fucking good and you should listen to it.
youtube
frankly Filmcow has been putting out nothing but gold lately. Watch the entire Shadowstone Park series, the Charlie The Unicorn Finale, and Vulo Lives (episodes AND streams, streams are in a playlist unlisted on their channel) when you get the chance. even if you have already. rewatch them. rewatch them all.
funnily enough, filmcow i guess ALSO was a partial inspiration for my sound design love. their old work always had interesting sounds, though nothing i really got enraptured by at the time. but Filmcow has also been getting into audiodrama, as seen here, and also has released a huge couple of sound effect packs on itch.io for free, with the only usage right rule being they can't be used by pigs or fascists, which is. so cool. love jason steele. hero and icon.
i actually use a lot of these in my work!
sound is so cool dude. i love sound.

as tagged by @wordssometimesfail, it's time for the top 10 songs from my on repeat! it's summer soundtrack time babey!
Ride or Die - Hippo Campus. this band has been skirting around my periphery for years bc they're a genre I usually listen to, but i never got into them until spotify suggested this one and the beat hooked me
Hello - Grouplove. somehow every summer grouplove puts out music they manage to make THE song of the summer, just saying.
The Ballad of Mr Steak - Kishi Bashi. weird lyrics, phenomenal violin playing, groovy synth. I've had one or two kishi bashi songs in my playlists for a few years but recently decided to expand and listen to more of his discography and found this banger right away
American Blood - Passion Pit. new music from passion pit my best friend passion pit???? in 2023??? yes and he nails it again <3
Pink Pony Club - Chappell Roan. this one is brand new to me - I attended a burlesque show and one of the performers danced to this song - but it's SUCH an earworm. it's also conveniently right in my vocal range so i've been singing it a lot.
Hot Pink - Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird. my local college radio station played this song a while back and this entire album has been on repeat ever since, but this one is still my fave. the singer's voice is so deep and rich.
Kids with Guns - Gorillaz. currently making and listening to a playlist for my beloved OC Nimble, who was raised in a crime family and started holding a gun at a pretty young age.
Capacity - Charly Bliss. another band with a really distinct lead singer, but in the opposite direction - both girlish and grungy, high and tinged with vocal fry. the rest of the band also slaps.
songs 9 and 10 on my list are repeat artists (another Charly Bliss song and another Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird) so I'm breaking the pattern to plug two songs from lower on the list. Cold Cold Man by Saint Motel has been stuck in my head for days (that piano opening is so catchy!), and Can't Behave by Courtney Jaye is my current go to sing in the shower song - this is another one gifted to me by the campus radio station and shazam.
Thanks for tagging me!! cordially inviting @sleepsong, @mikeykeats22, @plantboy-elliott, @sadspacegoat, and anyone who has read my new star wars fic to participate :)

thanksgiving playlist extravaganza, pt. 1
i got busy last week with work and with life, and didn’t get around to putting together a friday playlist, which bothers no one other than myself, and doesn’t bother me that much, either.
but, since thanksgiving is coming up this week in the united states, and i’ll be spending a lot of time in the kitchen, i thought it might be fun to make a larger list to keep you company while you mash your potatoes or stuff your turkey or just stock up on wine and order takeout.
this is part 1 — tumblr limits you to ten bandcamp links per post, which seems reasonable, so i’ve broken it up into three lists with the occasional youtube link when bandcamp fails me. next edition on tuesday, final edition on thursday.
***
charlie megira | tower of tongues
CHARLIE MEGIRA has always seemed a little tragic to me; he was always a man out of step and out of time. he’s hard to pin down, genre-wise, because he jumped around a lot, which wouldn’t have been a problem today, but in the pre-streaming era, could make it tough for people to discover and stick with you. this particular song is from his post-punk era, and until listening to this record for the first time in months, i did not realize how much of modern post-punk (e.g., soft kill) you can hear in this.
creature party | digital addiction
CREATURE PARTY are locals here in portland who we caught the other night, playing in the basement of the shanghai tunnel bar, which may (or, as it turns out, mostly like may not) have been the site of countless abductions, a gateway to a dangerous and unpleasant life of servitude at sea. in reality, most men who were sold into servitude were just drugged and then defrauded.
i don’t have a good transition here, i just wanted to clear up a common misconception.
creature party were a delightful riot live. sound-wise, they’re very definitely a pacific northwest band, and you can hear the usual indie influences there (sleater-kinney is probably the easiest and laziest reference i can think of), but there’s plenty more to like here, because there’s just as much weirdo, lo-fi, fuzzy B-52s in this sound as there is pacific northwestern indie.
laura jane grace | lolo 13
approximately 5,700 years ago, i lived next door to AGAINST ME! in a triplex across the street from gainesville punk greats BITCHIN’ and caddy corner from former floridian lumberjack and all-around man of bellows, CHUCK RAGAN. the late 90s were a pretty wild time to live in gainesville, florida. i would not have predicted LAURA JANE GRACE would’ve become who she’s become at that time, but i’m not sure i would’ve predicted anyone from that time would be doing anything they’re doing now — caroline from BITCHIN’ was in RUSSIAN DOLL!
i haven’t really kept up with LJG in recent years because i’m just not huge into acoustic folk-punk anymore, but this record has a lot more depth than i thought it was going to, and i consider myself corrected and reminded to stop writing things off just because i think i know what they’ll sound like.
surface to air missive | rosy
these folks (or, well, this folk) is new to me, but i really enjoy SURFACE TO AIR MISSIVE. there are plenty of influences you can hear here, and plenty of influence-influences you can hear, as well — not only can you hear some of THE SMITHS or even NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL here, you can hear the bands who influenced them. i don’t know much more about this band beyond knowing that it’s a one-man show, which is impressive. normally, one-person bands tend to fall apart when it comes to drums, but these are solid throughout.
katie morey | trial by fire
i bought this record earlier this year, and keep coming back to it as a recommendation, even though i have a hard time pinning down exactly what i like about it. it’s got a specific sound which i nonetheless can’t quite put my finger on, but it definitely comes from the early 1970s. lots of heavy reverb, electric piano and quietly competent drumming. it’s a fantastic sunday morning record all the way through, which i can’t recommend enough, even while being unable to explain what, specifically it is that grabs me.
kid congo powers | peanuts
KID CONGO POWERS is a legend who has played with so many underground greats and who it’s nice to see is finally beginning to get a little more recognition. he just released a book, which is on my christmas list, documenting his time through THE GUN CLUB, THE CRAMPS, NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS and more, and anyone who comes out alive on the other side of a history like that is definitely worth listening to. further, kid congo’s got a unique perspective as a gay man who was out and proud from very early on, even when the punk and underground scenes were nowhere near as tolerant as they’d eventually become. you can definitely hear his CRAMPS years in this track, but kid congo’s got his own thing going on that’s worth considering on it’s own.
sea power | be gone (demo)
SEA POWER (formerly british sea power) have picked up a lot of new fans in recent years because of their score for disco elysium, which is undeniably great, but, for me, open season is always going to be the record to beat. the original release is pretty unassailable, but, as is their way, sea power also tends to release their demo and early versions, and they’re always a delight to pick through. this version of be gone has the lovely melody of the original, but is quieter and doesn’t have the same bombastic, big sound that the initial release did. if you like listening to how songs can evolve for a band from when they’re written to when they’re recorded, this one’s a great example.
lee fields | i should have let you be
LEE FIELDS IS BACK! LEE FIELDS IS BACK!
of course, he didn’t go anywhere, but we’ve lost so many soul and R&B greats in recent years that it’s always a relief to see one continuing to put out great work. fields got back together with daptone records this year to release this, and the whole record is fantastic. this song has his signature sound with a really interesting, almost beatles-esque bridge right in the middle of it. the whole record’s fantastic and a well-welcomed return and i can’t recommend it enough.
reigning sound | falling rain
i’ll never not be bummed out that cartwright called an end to the REIGNING SOUND before i got the chance to catch them live, though cartwright’s an industrious and restless guy who’ll have something new and exciting to check out soon enough. this one comes from shattered, which wasn’t my favorite record when it came out, but has really, really grown on me. i mean, i recommend literally every single one of their records, but if you’ve got to start somewhere, shattered isn’t a bad place to start.
murder by death | my evergreen
given that it’s a thanksgiving playlist, a few christmas songs are bound to find their way in, and, well, would you look at that, here’s one of them! MURDER BY DEATH are one of my all-time favorites, and it’s entirely in character that they’d put together a christmas record. all of it is fun, but this cover of the SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS my evergreen manages to take what was, originally, a good-enough christmas effort and elevate to something profoundly nostalgic, bittersweet, and lovely. my partner and i have a hard rule about not playing this one until after thanksgiving, but i feel like we’re close enough that you should get to start working it into your holiday playlists now.
that’s it for this list; i’ll have another one up on tuesday to continue the thurday cooking extravaganza.

game #3: share your top 5 current songs
tagged by @clutterbugs thank you emma!!! i feel like i get to use the free space in scrabble
1. Kiss in My Heart by Junk Fujiyama
i discovered this song a while back on a city pop playlist i think? and it’s been stuck in my head recently (even before indigo!) so i’ve been playing it. it’s just a fun happy song, it sounds like the artist is smiling as he’s singing it
2. ILLELLA by MAMAMOO
another super fun song and i didn’t think it was possible but i am gayer because of it. i have so many feelings about this i will have to hold myself back but i am v i b r a t i n g something’s about to break
3. girl like me by Blessing
this song is acoustic but i think also r&b influenced? i like how the lyrics are somewhat specific but the insecurity is she’s talking about is still super relatable to a lot of people and the singer’s voice is kind of unique
4. complex (demo) by Katie Gregson-MacLeod
this song is just kinda heartbreaking tbh at the end of the day it’s your typical woman trying to “save” a man who's too far gone to spare her a second thought story but the vocals really carry the emotion across in a way i don’t hear all the time so i think it’s worth a listen if you...want to feel sad
5. Ketchum, ID by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus
i have been in a folksy mood lately and i think a few julien baker/phoebe bridgers/lucy daucus songs came up in my listening and that reminded me about this album. this is my favorite song from it. i think the line “i am never anywhere anywhere i go, when i’m home i’m never there long enough to know” is just really hitting for me rn? i also can’t get over how this is the last song on the album they ended the whole album with
BONUS GAME! i wasn’t tagged in this but i wanted to share this while i’m here in case anyone was interested in doing this for themselves. if you have spotify this bot will judge you for your music taste. it’s like the anti-spotify wrapped. this is what they had to say about mine:
i will tag @joon-rkive, @cheekyquokka, @mutedstring, @jinsquishes, @senor-hoberto and anyone who tagged me in one game but hasn’t been tagged in one of the others (does that make sense?). no pressure just if any of the games interest you 💕 feel free to ignore me!!!
#tag: i'm it!#cordiallyfuturedwight#wistfulocean#jiminsproof#blueside-hobi#seoksao#clutterbugs#joon-rkive#cheekyquokka#mutedstring#jinsquishes#senor-hoberto#i was relatively normal about this be proud of me please
