Fussy
word count; 1176 – f!reader
Not usually favouring sports, you’re in the journalism club to make use of your great eye for design and writing. After watching one of your school’s volleyball team’s official games last season, you took notice of the boring brochures they handed out with the players’ information. You hadn’t yet chosen what to do for your project this semester and decided to lend your talents to making a better representation of the team’s charms and talents. What you didn’t expect to get out of the project was a date.
You received permission from their coach and captain and set up some equipment to take your photos in a room adjacent to the gym during practice. Hopefully, you can encourage them all to pose confidently. In order to not disturb their whole practice, you ask one grade to join you at a time, starting with the first-years and ending with the third-years. Good luck!
You already know the captain of your school’s volleyball team. Sometimes you wondered if Kuroo knew everyone. The two of you have a lot of classes together and you would be lying if you said you hated hearing his charming comments and finding fun ways to quip back at him. Perhaps you even developed a little crush. So when you decided on the project for your club, you asked him with the biggest possible doe eyes to approve it and help get his players to cooperate. He was more than happy to help you and arrange everything, despite telling you that you owe him.
Fortunately, the first years were easy. Absolute sweethearts that were so excited to show off. You had almost finished with the second-years when you met your first obstacle of the day, unless you count Lev being too tall for you to photograph without a stool to stand on and Inuoka not being able to stand still so most of the pictures ended up slightly blurry. No, this was an actual problem.
Kenma was having a bad day and didn’t want to.
Nekoma’s pampered prince was really not in the mood for this today, and with every pose you didn’t approve of as good enough, he got more fussy. His facial expressions were very expressive, especially now that he was annoyed, it just wasn’t the emotion you wanted. You sighed and stomped your foot a little, looking at him with a slight frown. “Can’t you try a little harder, Kenma?”
“Does it really matter? Just use the first ones,” he complained, sounding incredibly bored.
You were trying to resist saying you would snitch on him to Kuroo like a little kid, but it was getting gradually more difficult. “This project is important to me, I want to make all of you look good.”
“Are you saying I look ugly?” Okay, now he was being childish. The two of you glared at each other for a second before Yamamoto stepped in to yell at his teammate about how a pretty girl needed their help and Kuroo told them to do everything you say and then hurry back to practice. On the contrary, that only made Kenma more apathetic. “I won’t start posing up a storm just because Kuroo has a crush on her.”
You froze, biting your lip as a blush flushed over your cheeks at the reveal. He has a crush on you? Yamamoto started waving his hands as if stressed about the information being revealed, but he only stuttered out a few syllables that didn’t turn into anything usable. You pick up your camera and look through the pictures you had taken of Kenma again, still chewing on your lip as you try to focus on the task at hand. “Can you do this again, please? Last one.” You held up the camera to show him the reference photo and he silently agreed, standing ready for you. You change the angle a bit and do your best to adjust the lighting before finally dismissing the second-years. When Kenma was about to leave, you carefully tapped his shoulder, not really meeting his eyes. “Is it true? About Kuroo…”
Kenma heard his best friend talk about you all the time. Your wit and charm matched his and he was especially obsessed with how you started doing your hair lately. The setter didn’t look so annoyed with you anymore, which made you glad. “Yes. Please date him or something so he’ll stop whining to me about it.”
You were a bit nervous when the third-years arrived, switching between avoiding Kuroo and coming on too strong. How do you act when you know someone you like likes you back?
Yaku and Kai were great, following your instructions and easily giving you several options for what photo to use of each. As Kuroo stepped up to the plate, he talked to you while you got the camera ready and fetched the little stool you used for the first years. “I hope no one gave you any trouble today,” he said, sounding like he would rather have a normal conversation right now.
“Your best friend and I got into it but we came to an agreement,” you said, gaining a bit more confidence as you went along. That made him chuckle, a fond look on his face as he didn’t doubt Kenma would fight the spotlight. You smiled at him before holding up the camera again, making sure the lens was on him when you kept talking. “I didn’t know you had a crush on me!”
Oh, the betrayal. As Yaku’s laughter burst behind you, you watched through the camera lens as Kuroo faltered and his smile fell, snapping as many photos as you could. His face suddenly matched the uniform and his shoulders were sky-high. “Huh?” he said. He was flustered, brain trying desperately to decide if he should deny it or follow the flow. Damn it, Kenma. Suddenly, Kuroo regretted how he had stolen some of Kenma’s snacks earlier. “You’re not going to use those pictures, are you?” he ended up saying, unusually awkward. It was fun, seeing Kuroo stumble.
Yaku and Kai end up throwing in a little comment about being finished anyway and leaving the area, giving the two of you some space. When he came back to the gym, Yaku threw an arm over Kenma’s shoulder and ruffled his hair, giving him a confusing mix of praise and scolding.
Meanwhile, you were smiling at Kuroo as he stepped a little closer to you. “Of course not, they’re for my special collection.” You wiggled your eyebrows and Kuroo finally felt his shoulders relax a little.
“I did say you owe me one for this project, how about I take you out this weekend?” he asked, usual charm back in place along with his crooked smirk.
“That sounds great, Tetsuro,” you agreed, taking a moment to say anything else as you stared at him up close. Your cheeks were burning at this point and you fumbled with the camera. “Now, come on. We have to show off Nekoma’s captain!”
“You got it, boss.”
/please note that Yaku calls Kenma their «pampered prince» in season 4, so that is not me making a nasty comment about Kenma. I just think it’s a very cute nickname that fit the scenario!

— ALL MINE
(part of erotica’s & lovae’s valentines special💋)
ice hockeyplayer!jean who walked around the campus with the many gifts and trinkets various girls gave him, each one wishing him good luck for the big game today. he didn’t care about the chocolates, teddy bears, or the other stupid shit they gave him. hell, he didn’t even bother reading the love letters. none of it meant anything to him when he had to figure out an over the top way to make you his valentines because not only were you his soulmate and the one he’s supposed to grow old with, but he needed to win you back.
he walked past your lecture hall like he did everyday on his way to his own, thinking about how he used to be late to his own class trying to walk you to yours. it never mattered to him seeing as he always made up for it by participating in class and getting high grades on assignments. he didn’t know why he still poked his head inside the room to see if you were there. he tells himself and his friends that it’s to make sure you “got to class safely”, but in reality, he knows nothing’s gonna happen to you in the 5 to 6 minute walk from the dining hall to your lecture. truth be told, he really just wanted to see you. since the two of you broke up, you avoided him like the plague, but he knew you would have no choice but to see him when he’d visit the room you were in daily, using the fact that one of his teammates was in the same class as you.
though today was different because right when he was about to go into the room, he watched that very teammate ask you out with flowers and chocolates. he glared, scoffing watching you act all “excited” about candies you hated and flowers that weren’t even your favorite. it took everything in him to stop himself from going in there and breaking his jaw when you kissed his cheek and hugged him with your arms around his neck and his on your waist. how would you feel watching him kiss a girl after reading her love declaration?! it was even worse knowing he would have to play with him later today. the whole team knew he was still obsessed with you, especially this guy since he always teased jean about it so what fuck was he doing asking you out?
he thought about it the entire day. he knew that many guys were interested in you, but he didn’t think somebody would actually be bold enough to do something about their feelings. he had on his gear, ready for the final game of the season. his coach’s words of motivation went in one ear and out the other as he stared down his smug ass teammate. as everyone started to hype themselves up with different handshakes and chants, jean remained quiet, even bumping his shoulder going past him. his final straw was seeing you cheering at the game, just, not for him. you screamed that asshole’s name, your friends alongside you all happy about your possible new relationship and when he winked at you, jean tackled him onto the ice.
he knew he was in a world of trouble now once he got on top of him. he grabbed the collar of his shirt and began punching him, not stopping when the guy managed to get situated and got a few hits in, or when the security rushed over, or when he heard his coach yelling at him from the side. he had slight bruising on his cheek, his lip was bleeding, his knuckles were scratched up when he threw his gloves off, and he was being penalized and cussed out by his coach, but it was worth seeing you stare at him with your mouth gaped open. your more confused than pissed face said, “did you seriously just do that?” and the wink he gave you with the smirk on his lips while his coach spat in his face said, “yeah, and i’d do it a thousand times over.”
he wasn’t shocked when you went home right after the incident. he was hoping to talk to you once the game was over, but it worked out since it gave him time to buy the snacks and sweets you actually liked, flowers that were actually your favorite, and prepare his “i’m sorry, please take me back” speech. he originally wanted to do something crazy to show his never ending love, but it was clear after today he had no time to waste. with a done up basket, pretty flowers, and a speech he recited under his breath on the way to the door, he was ready though when he knocked on your front door and you opened it wearing his spare jersey he thought he lost with nothing visibly under it, arms crossed over your chest and leaning against the door frame with a disapproving look on your face, everything he planned to say left him at that very second. “well?” you asked with an eyebrow raised. “gimme another chance?” he asked, an unsure grin on his pretty, bandaged face. you looked him up and down and just sighed before grabbing him by his shirt collar and dragging him inside the room.
“s-shit baby…you’re squeezing me so tight,” he groaned, his head thrown back on your pillow, big, veiny hands on your hips as you bounced yourself on his cock with your hands back behind you on his strong thighs. you almost forgot how big and girthy his dick was, the stretch burning you when you first sat down on it after months of nothing and guys that were no match to him. “look so beautiful riding me like that,” he said mostly to himself, staring up at you with lust blown pupils, taking in the blissful expressions you made and the softness of your breast as he massaged them under the jersey.
fuck, it felt amazing, the veins running along his length grazing your walls, the curve ensuring the fat tip hit you right where you needed it, the thickness of it giving you that same delicious burn from before that had your legs about to give out, the ring of white cream you made at the base of his cock dripping down his balls, ass sticking to his pelvis from your mixed, gluey essences. you were getting tired and he could tell you were with how you occasionally didn’t bounce, but instead rocked your hips with your nails digging into his skin and biting down on your bottom lip.
he watched you, wondering when you’d quit being stubborn and admit you need help as he moved his hands all over your body, pinching your nipples, gripping your waist, harshly slapping your ass. he hadn’t had you like this in months, dick inside your tight walls making a mess all over him and whatever surface was beneath you. how long had it been since you fucked somebody? he hadn’t done anything to any woman since you’d broken up, even going as far to tell them that he was still with you. well, it didn’t matter, he could tell from the whimpers and whines that left your lips as your desperately rode him to continue that sensation of his cock bruising your cervix that if anybody fucked you, it wasn’t like this.
it was when your pace significantly slowed down that he sighed and pulled you down to him. your arms immediately wrapped around his neck like you were waiting for him to do this as he propped his feet into the bed sheets. with his hands on your ass, spreading it apart, he started to thrust up into your pussy. you screamed, eyes rolling back as his fat cock dragged in and out of you, balls slapping against you from the fast, rough change in pace. you could tell much he missed you from the way he hugged you close to him while making you cream in his cock. “yes! j-jean—yes, just like that, don’t stop!” you cried out, drool dripping down your chin as he fucked you further through your orgasm, overstimulating your pussy when he reached a hand down to rub harsh circles on your puffy, throbbing clit.
“missed you so much, baby,” jean grunted, the speed of his thrust into your pussy not letting up. “i—i missed you too! missed you so much,” you cried, moving your head from its spot in the crook of your neck to look him in his light brown eyes. your lips soon met his, tongue hastily pushing inside his mouth and swirling along his after such a long time without one another. everything was messy, saliva coating both of your chins, the liquids from your previous orgasms painting the bedsheets and allowing him to better fuck up into you with ease, the thin layer of sweat that covered your bodies sticking the two of you together.
“please, please, please fill me up,” you babbled incoherently, begging when you felt his cock start twitching inside your tight, gummy walls. his thrust became rougher, the broken, but rough and intense rhythm of his mushroom tip hitting everywhere you needed it too taking you to the brink of another orgasm. “imma fill your pretty pussy with my cum…she’s missed me so much, hasn’t she?” “yes! s-so much!” you gasped, eyes in the back of your head and body jerking as you started creaming all over him again. “i’m cumming! ‘m cumming, ‘m cumming, fuckkk!” you practically sobbed, pussy gushing. your walls spasmed around his cock, making him pump your insides with his hot, thick, ropes of cum.
you felt it leak out of your abused hole as he continued to fuck and overstimulating the two of you through your orgasms to the point you were crying and he was biting down on your shoulder with his eyes rolled back. you continued to fill the room with the most filthy noises, the sweet squelching sound from you pussy echoing and the slapping of your skin on his being all that you could hear once he had you seeing stars because he didn’t stop, even when he was about to cry from the overwhelming feeling himself. he was just too scared to lose you again.

a/n: there were a lot of songs that i listened to while writing this (animals) and i do have a playlist of them but i would recommend color tv to listen while reading the flashback part bcs i did write this part with that song on repeat lol. enjoy!
All the world and his wife was scrutinizing Ken Sato the moment he stepped out of the airport and took his first deep breath in his homeland after twenty years. Of course, he welcomed and basked in the attention even if it suffocated him—quite literally, he must add, what with how the reporters and photographers were almost wrestling each other to get a scoop on him. What came after that only gave him a headache after a headache. He had to settle in his new residence, a mansion he bought just 15 minutes away from where his father lived, one that felt way too big for just one person and his supercomputer assistant. He finalized his contract with the Yomiuri Giants, followed by a meeting with all the staff members and a less-than-formal outing with his new teammates to some club in Shibuya he didn’t bother to remember the name of, where he was just constantly reminded that he was alone. The day after that, he had to deal with a hangover, a press conference, and an interview that ticked him off—Ami Wakita, was it?—before ending the night with a bar fight that left his shoulder aching.
Ken was sure he wouldn’t even have considered moving back to Japan nor would he have let his father somehow slip back into his life if it wasn’t for his mother.
With his injury, your father needs you, kiddo.
And so, Ken Sato began his baseball career in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants. He brought the team to their first victory of the season despite a lot of things: how the media was still on his ass about why he would leave his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers behind, how Coach Shimura seemed to have a chip on his shoulder when it came to him, how the pain in his own shoulder would stab and dull with every movement he made. The way his shoulder ached left him wondering if he should have treated it more seriously rather than seeing it as an inconvenience, perhaps put his pride aside to admit that yes, that drunken brawl was fucking stupid, and my shoulder fucking hurts. That was why he didn’t think much of it when Coach Shimura was talking about bringing in some new guy—something about a new performance analyst or whatever—as a matter of fact, he couldn’t care less.
So, imagine his surprise when he showed up to practice and saw a face he hadn’t seen since graduating college in the States. A face that made his breath hitch because one, she was just that beautiful, and two, he had no idea why she would be here. A face that was so familiar he almost threw up from shock, anger, guilt, longing. A face that contorted into contempt at the mere sight of him.
Ken Sato was sure of one thing at that moment.
He was completely, utterly, thoroughly fucked.
Ken Sato wasn’t always the famed world-class baseball star he turned out to be, and she wasn’t always the blunt and tight-lipped new analyst for the Yomiuri Giants she turned out to be.
He was a doe-eyed, lanky Japanese kid who had above average grades in his classes and showed promising results as a slugger for the baseball team. He spent most of his freshman year being stereotyped and made fun of for how he looked and talked, and it only changed because he had his growth spurt in sophomore year. Not only did he become a cleanup hitter by the end of the year, girls were suddenly giving him bedroom eyes in the hallway and guys tried to make up for their borderline bullying by letting him into their cliques. His friendships with them were shallow, really, because they would still poke fun at this old accent even after he had nearly perfected his American accent. Ken took it in stride only because he knew everyone would never make fun of him in baseball, not when he had practically put his school on the map by winning tens of titles and playing in the Senior League. And so, by the end of high school, Ken had baseball to thank for almost everything in his teenagehood.
She, on the other hand, came to high school smart and pretty. Where Ken stood out like a sore thumb, she stood out like a broken finger. Someone being academically gifted and socially relevant was practically unheard of at that time. She was among the top 10 students in freshman year, earned her spot as the leadoff hitter for the softball team in sophomore year, won a national debate championship in junior year, and passed 4 AP classes with flying colors in senior year. She, too, had put the school on the map, perhaps even more contributively than Ken did, so the teachers only kept their grievances for when she skipped class to smoke. Even so, everyone seemed to like her regardless of their cliques; she was always greeted in the hallways, was almost always invited to every party, and had gone out with all the popular students. She could have had it all, and whatever her secrets were, Ken and the other students in their school only knew her as the high school sweetheart, the kind you would see printed next to the definition of high school sweetheart itself.
Ken had seen her in passing during freshman year, but he never really talked to her until they shared three classes together in sophomore year. He remembered that she had approached him first during PE, suddenly speaking to him in fluent Japanese that he nearly had a whiplash. She told him that yes, I know you’re also Japanese and sorry I didn’t talk to you sooner, then babbled something about how she felt guilty that she had just been watching while others made fun of him. He didn’t think much of it at first, still surprised that one of the popular girls—if not the popular girl—in his year was actually talking to him. But then, he found himself understanding every word she said whenever she talked in Japanese and replying to whatever she was saying in English; he found himself exchanging notes and numbers with her in math class; he found himself going to the baseball field with her during lunch breaks and seeing who could hit the farthest. He was somehow roped into bringing her home after he offhandedly mentioned her to his mother, and then, they somehow became best friends. He would cover for her whenever she skipped class to smoke, much to his dismay, and she would introduce him to other social circles outside his baseball team, where he found his first girlfriend—who, admittedly, broke up with him because the way he spoke about his “best friend” was laced with more adoration than the first kiss he had with her. He would wait until their practice sessions were over and drive her home, where they would spend at least three hours talking on her porch before he went home, and she would show up to his games with an obnoxious handmade banner that read “KEN SATO THE G.O.A.T,” cheering the loudest whenever he hit a home run. He would pick her up from anywhere almost every time she asked, even if he had to get himself out of bed at two in the morning, and she would hang out at his place every other weekend, bringing fruit baskets and takeouts for his mother. It was somewhat domestic, how she settled in his apartment (and his life) whenever she came over. Ken almost always had to ground himself because his brain would feed him thoughts of a future with her, and his heart would beat so hard it threatened to break out of his ribcage.
But they were just best friends, he thought and said to his friends whenever they asked him about her. Best friends who happened to suck off, eat out, and eat each other’s faces pretty regularly. He found it funny at first, really; one time, their classmates told her that she just wasn’t human, what with how she juggled school and being popular. She only laughed it off, but he thought of how right they were when she came over while he was home alone at the end of sophomore year. There was no way the girl kneeling between his legs was fucking human. Not with that tongue of hers. Not with the way she looked up and batted her eyelashes at him. Not with how she literally gulped down his load in one go and played Tekken on his console as if she hadn’t just given him the best head of his life. She quite literally sucked the soul out of him that day, and he never had another head like that ever since. Even as they started hooking up—strictly platonic, she said, and he just went along with whatever she wanted as long as it was with her—that was still the stuff of his wet dreams, and it remained that way even long after they never saw each other again.
“Do you think we’ll be friends forever?”
The question caught Ken off-guard not only because it broke the comfortable silence between them, but also the feelings it evoked. Where is she going with this? he thought. A frown was etched on his face as he turned to look at her. Under the soft glow of the star projector in her room, she laid on her back, eyes tracing the constellations that danced across the ceiling. Her breathing was far more steady than his, chest rising and falling slowly behind the thin fabric of his shirt. Her hair fanned out around her on the pillow, framing her face as if it was her halo. At that time, her expression was probably the most serene and somber he had ever seen. She’s beautiful, he said to himself, and he thought it wouldn’t be so bad to keep a picture of this moment in his head for his selfish reminiscing should they ever stop being friends. (He hardly thought she meant that they could be more than friends, and he didn’t want to entertain the thought of not having her in his life.)
“Yeah?” He answered and mentally cursed himself for sounding so unsure. After clearing his throat, he corrected himself: “I mean, yeah, why not?”
There was no way she hadn’t seen the way he was staring at her from the corner of her eye. Even if she did, she didn’t turn her head to face him and only hummed in response to his answer. A look of contemplation appeared on her face as she kept quiet for nearly another minute. Ken swore it felt like an eternity.
“What if–” She sighed. “What if we fuck up and hurt each other? What then?”
Ken somehow knew that she already knew that there was no way she could ever fuck him up. (She already did, anyway, literally and figuratively.) Not with how he looked at her, not with how he reached out to hold her hand, not with how he promptly turned his head to face the ceiling once she was turning to look at him. Perhaps, what she was looking for was the reassurance that he wouldn’t fuck her up. He squeezed her hand when the thought crossed his mind.
“I’ll still be your friend anyways,” he said, softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
A chuckle left her lips then. She didn’t let go of his hand as she moved to hover over him, replacing the twinkling manmade constellations in his sight. (He thought she was brighter than any star in the sky, anyway.) He raised his brow when he saw the mischievous glint in her eyes as she leaned down, her lips nearly closing in on his.
The grin she had on her face was enough to tell him she was up to no good. “Are you a masochist?”
“You–seriously?”
He might’ve groaned from annoyance, but the way her body shook with laughter on top of him was enough to make that godawful warmth bloom in his chest. He pulled her in for a kiss, though he wasn’t sure if it was to shut her up or if he just wanted to, and he thought that if anyone were to see them like this, no one would ever believe him if he told them that they were just best friends. Hell, everyone had enough of his answer whenever they asked him about it at school, and he was even picked on again at some point—but not for how he looked or talked. No, he was picked on for being her “best friend” because no matter how many people had tried to make her theirs, she kept coming back to him. But then they would find Ken making out with one of the cheerleaders under the bleachers and her sucking off some guy from the football team at some senior’s house party. It was confusing for everyone, but even more so for Ken, because every time she asked him to pick her up from God-knows-where, he would see red when she saw her huffing out a smoke, disheveled because of someone who was not him.
And, of course, like all fever dreams, he had to wake himself up from it.
“–Sato.”
Two things snapped Ken out of his trance then. First, it was the voice that called out to him, then it was the pain in his shoulder. Ken found himself standing on the batter box in Tokyo Dome, a bat in his hand, and his breath was ragged. The seats were empty, the sky was turning dark, and then he remembered that he was at practice. He was at practice, not on the porch at her old house in Los Angeles holding her close as she cried over that one guy who supposedly broke her heart. He was at practice, not at the frat party where he met her again for the first time after months of no contact and saw her giggling on the lap of some jock. He was at practice, not in front of the diner they used to go to almost every other day where he said awful things he didn’t mean and maybe, just maybe, that was the reason why she had left for Japan the next day. (She had waited for him to come to the airport, to at least apologize, but he never came. He had turned off his phone during practice.)
Ken sighed and lowered his bat, hissing when he rolled his left shoulder. He steadied his breathing and regained his composure before his eyes flickered to the field. His teammates were waiting for him to hit another ball so they could continue their fielding practice. Then, he turned to the one in front of him—Yoshida, right?—whose voice pulled him out of his train of thought. Yoshida raised his brow when he locked eyes with Ken.
“Are you distracted or something?”
It was his turn to frown. “What?”
“Are you distracted by the new girl or something? You kept looking back at the dugout earlier.”
Ken almost dropped his bat when he heard that, his neck turning so quickly that he was surprised he didn’t give himself a whiplash. “What?”
Yoshida nodded in the direction of the dugout, and Ken turned to look. His grip around the bat tightened as his eyes darted towards the dugout. Her back was facing the field, leaning against the metal fence that divided the field and the dugout. Her arms held a clipboard to her chest, and he could only see her side profile from where he was standing as she spoke with Coach Shimura. The two of them looked familiar already—he really didn’t know how she did it, given that he was still at odds with the coach, but it was so her, he thought, the way she could get along with all the people he couldn’t—as Coach Shimura was talking more expressively with her than he had ever seen him. She was nodding to whatever Coach Shimura was talking about with a smile on her face, one that didn’t reach her eyes, and he berated himself because why and how the fuck could you tell from this distance? Ken’s lips parted as Coach Shimura’s expression changed and nodded in his direction, and his breath hitched as he saw her turning slightly towards him.
Ken’s heart dropped as the smile on her face faltered, replaced by an unimpressed look and an air of disdain that made him shiver. The world seemed to stop right then and there; even when she looked at him as if he was the reason behind her suffering—which was probably true, to an extent—he couldn’t help but think of how beautiful she was. Even with the hint of blood between her slightly cracked lips and the dark circles under her eyes that she didn’t bother to hide with some concealer. Even with how she looked even paler than she was when they were still in Los Angeles and how her cheekbones seemed to protrude and her cheeks seemed more hollow. She was beautiful, yet she contrasted her old self, which bothered him so much that dread started to pool in his stomach. Ken knew her and would even say he knew too much of her. But, right at that moment, it was as if he was looking straight into a stranger’s eyes and not the pair he had fallen in love with, as if he was looking at the stuff of his nightmares and not the girl of his dreams, as if he had never known her at all.
(What if it was true?)
Ken pinched his arm, hard, and winced when the pain seared through his body and kickstarted another throbbing ache in his shoulder. None of the stuff of his fever dreams, the dread and peculiarity of it, should have been real. This was real. So, if this was real, then God must not only be fucking joking, but He must’ve been thoroughly fucking evil to be putting him through this.
“Oh, fuck.”

I Can See You: Chapter 3 (Ellie Williams, TLOU)
I Can See You
Fic master post here
*Not beta read
Ellie Williams is a player, on and off the lacrosse field. You begin tutoring her so that she can get her grades up and stay on the team. You try to keep things professional, however, your affection is a great motivator. Ellie wouldn't be caught dead with you so you become her secret mission.
Chapter 3
The more Ellie flirts with you, the more you see her with other girls, and you aren’t sure why. She gets jealous when other girls give you attention and starts to show that she wants you all to herself.
Word count: 4.1k
CW: No use of y/n, profanities, a little bit of angst, sexual tension, *Ellie and reader are both 18*
You aren’t quite sure the cause, but there is a positive correlation between how much Ellie Williams flirts with you and how much she is getting with other girls.
You knew that Ellie has… engaged in many connections, even seen it here and there. But it just doesn’t make any sense. Maybe it’s just how much she is on your mind, but it feels like everywhere you look Ellie is with a different girl. Up against a locker, in the library before tutoring, and you even saw her worn out converse along with a pair of designer boots under a bathroom stall.
The Monday after the game and private lacrosse lessons she is raring to go. She sits down with a mischievous look in her eyes. “We are finally on an even playing field, tutor girl.”
“Because I adequately played lacrosse in gym today?” You chuckle.
“Yes, we are helping each other pass our classes,” she points out as if it’s completely obvious.
“True,” is the reply you give without thinking. You truly appreciate Ellie’s help. You don’t know that you could have done it without her. But in one class. You’ve put a lot of effort, more than you have with anyone else, into assisting her with four different classes. It is interesting stuff, but definitely not as fun as lacrosse is for her. It’s not a competition by any means, you signed up for this. There is just a bit of resentment.
“Hey come on, I saved your GPA.” Ellie is playful, however there is a sliver of disappointment.
“It’s true,” you smile but she doesn’t look convinced.
“I can’t deny that you are probably the only tutor in this school that can put up with all my bullshit. You are gay, and I’m me. But, I’m the only girl on the lacrosse team that you know.” Ellie seems pleased with herself, as if she just won an argument.
“You aren’t the only girl on the lacrosse team that is gay, and I’m me.” You are impressed by how smooth that was.
Ellie’s eyes widen in fear. Noted. “Please tell me it’s Robin.”
“She has a girlfriend,” you remind her and she looks frustrated.
“Josie?” She tries with minimal hope.
“Ellie, she's a freshman!” You scoff at her.
Ellie crosses her arms with narrow eyes. “So it must be Anderson.”
“I’ve only ever had a few conversations with her, but our parking spots are next to each other. I see the way she looks at me, and every once in a while she will give me a compliment. Abby’s never made a move though.”
“Well that’s lovely.” Ellie spats.
“Are you jealous, Williams?” You tease, she is uncharacteristically peeved that another girl is giving you attention.
Ellie forces a laugh. “Pft. No. Of course not. Anderson and I just don’t get along.”
“What did you do to her?” You ask, assuming Ellie’s air of superiority is frowned upon by her teammates. No matter how good she is, huge egos aren’t good in that kind of environment.
Ellie slams her hands down and defends herself as if she is a criminal on trial. “I didn’t do anything! She started it!”
You let out a long breath in defeat. “Never mind, I don’t need to know.”
Ellie breaks eye contact and mumbles. “I wouldn’t want you to get involved with someone like that.”
Your lips curl into somewhat of a snarl. “So you care about my feelings? I thought I was just a girl to flirt with when no one is looking.”
Fear settles into her green eyes. “Of course not. How could I ignore our chemistry?” Ellie’s pun falters to near silence, she realized this is not the right time.
“Speaking of chemistry, I want to go over kinetic and potential energy first.” You are trying to forget that interaction happened.
She nods. “I think I have a good understanding of energy.”
“That’s great Ellie. Why don't you tell me, in your own words, what kinetic and potential energy are. Thinking of it in your own words will help you remember it.”
“Well potential energy is what’s happening between us right now. The ‘will they, won’t they’. We make eye contact all the time because we are always looking at each other. You can’t pretend like you don’t want to kiss me. Looking at my lips when I talk, leaning in close to show me how to do things. Potential energy is everything we could be if we gave into our desire.
And kinetic energy? That’s what we felt when we kissed. Getting close to each other, loving it, craving it. We both knew it wasn’t necessary to play lacrosse like that, but we did it anyway. We long to have more of each other. Having you close felt like an atomic collision.”
Your face is burning hot and you struggle to find words when she’s giving you fuck me eyes. “I would like to remind you that this is supposed to be strictly business, although that is a pretty spot on analogy.”
Ellie is so cocky, so pleased with herself. It’s infuriatingly sexy. “When I take this test I’ll be thinking about you regardless, now I have a more appropriate reason to.”
“I'm like your academic muse.” You laugh nervously, wishing you hadn’t said that.
Ellie’s eyes light up. “The most powerful optical 3D spectrograph for astrophysics known to man?”
She is such a fucking nerd and it makes you smile. Even temporarily forget all the bull shit. “It’s someone who inspires an artist.”
“Well I do like measuring the wavelength of the vibes you radiate.” She licks her lips waiting for your reaction.
“That’s actually pretty good,” you chuckle.
Ellie runs a hand through her hair.“The don’t call me the rizzler for nothing.”
You giggle at how ridiculous this girl secretly is. “I would say space nerd but whatever you have to tell yourself.”
“You can call me space nerd, as long as you don’t say it in front of anyone else. You should make it my contact name in your phone, in case someone sees your notifications.”
You roll your eyes and agree to it. You hate that sometimes she charms you to the point of forgetting about the reality of your situation. Gives you hope just to take it away.
“While I do that look at questions 5, 6, 7, and 8” you mumble. Ellie can tell you aren’t happy with her and doesn’t push her luck, doesn’t even ask any questions the rest of the period.
However, she puts her hand on your arm to get your attention when you start to leave the library. “I have another home game tomorrow.”
You sigh. “That is going to take time away from studying.”
“Oh, I, uh, yeah,” she says, rubbing the back of her neck anxiously.
You give her a half hearted smile. “Good luck though.”
Ellie senses that you are wary of her so she is blushing and hesitant. “The last game was the best season opener I’ve ever played. You should come to this one too, just in case you are my good luck charm.”
“I uh… I’m not sure if I can make it,” you tell her. Any hope she had falls off her face.
Seeing her like that tugs at your heart much more than you would like it to. “But I’ll do my best.” Her face lights back up and she hits you with a smolder that would give Flynn Rider a run for his money.
During lunch the next day you get some homework done so that you can go to Ellie’s game.
When you open your locker at the end of the day a piece of paper falls out. Unfolding the note it says “I hope you can fit me into your busy schedule -E”. Even if she hadn’t signed it you would have recognized her handwriting.
There had been a confusing math problem you got stuck on so you took a seat right before the team went onto the field. You sit alone, in the same spot as last time, so Ellie can easily see that you are there. For the sake of good luck, of course.
Ellie looks up at you once she’s in position and smirks. She moves her hands on her stick to the weird way you had held it the other day, before quickly switching back.
Abby Anderson looks good as usual, fighting for the ball when the whistle is blown, but Ellie’s words are in the back of your mind.
The team that they are playing today is much better than the last one. They keep control of the ball a lot more and have a faster goalie. After Ellie takes a few shots you notice that the goalie has a certain strategy. You don’t know lacrosse but you do know how to recognize a pattern. Ellie notices it too, and takes full advantage of it, scoring right away and repeating the move.
Ellie, and Abby, though not as much, lead the team to victory. Now that you are aware of it there are moments where you notice tension between them.
You time your exit to cross paths with Ellie, so you can see her before you leave. Not that you would say anything to her with other people around. Unfortunately, her attention gets captured by one of the prettiest girls in school. The girl twirls her hair flirtatiously and puts her hand on Ellie’s arm. Most of the team is walking back to the locker while you walk to your car. You hear footsteps close to you and a somewhat familiar voice calls your name.
Abby Anderson is walking next to you.
“You plan on coming to every game this season?” She asks.
“Oh, I don’t know. Probably just until the lacrosse unit is over in gym, I’ve been studying.”
“Well I look forward to seeing you in the stands. Maybe you will find a reason to keep coming.”
You give her a polite smile, unsure of what to do.
“See ya around,” she says and then jogs to catch up to some of her teammates.
Moments later you receive a text from Space Nerd🚀🤓: I’ll be keeping an eye on her
Ellie hard core flirts at your next tutoring session. It's weird, but so is she.
One would think she hit the lottery when talking about how you were at her game. When she thanked you for coming she emphasized that it was her game. Assuring herself you were there for her and not Abby, though she didn’t actually say that. “I really think you are my good luck charm, looks like you are stuck coming to the rest of the games this season.”
“I wasn’t at the away game,” you remind her and she frowns. “Fine, every home game.”
“I really am responsible for the fate of the entire lacrosse team,” you chuckle. “I’ll try and get to all of your home games.”
Ellie’s jaw drops.“You will?”
“Yeah. You’ve been working hard. I’m proud of you. Besides, I'm not helping you get your grades up just to ruin it with your superstition.”
Working on her calculus is tedious, which only increases her impulse to create distractions.
“It’s getting hard to differentiate,” she tells you between problems.
“I know it’s hard, but you've already improved so much. I know you’ve got this.”
Ellie brushes a piece of hair off of her face. “Differentiate between whether or not you really want to keep things professional. You say you want to, but that look in your eyes tells me otherwise.”
You roll your eyes but Ellie is not easily deterred. “If we integrate ourselves, there is an array of possibilities. The limit goes to infinity.”
“The only reason I put up with your flirting is because it weirdly helps me know how much you’ve been paying attention.”
Ellie leans in closer and whispers “you can try and lie to me all you want, but you have a tell.”
You don’t back away from her, you match her energy, though the hair on the back of your neck stands up. “A tell? I don’t have a tell,” you scoff. “But if I did have one, what would it be?”
Ellie licks her lips and then looks at yours when she asks “what’s the fun in telling you?”
“Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility.”
Ellie looks like she’s about to jump out of her seat with that reference to her favorite superhero. “That makes me want to call you the Uncle Ben to my Spider Man, but that would make trying to kiss you really weird.”
As an athlete, Ellie does know how to get down to business. She had her chem test and got a B, but she has tests in all 3 of the other classes you are helping her with over the next week as well. She keeps herself in check, meaning minimal antics instead of as much as she can get away with.
You prepare her for all the essay topics she might get about The Great Gatsby, go over every single Spanish vocab word and conjugation as many times as possible, and practice the types of integrals she has the most trouble with.
Ellie reports back that she feels like she did well. You check in with her Sunday night, she tells you she did good and then doesn’t answer when you ask about specifics.
Humble is not a word to describe Ellie Williams, so you find it a little odd. That is until you get an email from the guidance counselor, informing you that Ellie has met the requirements she needed to. You have been assigned another student, a softball player that has been slacking this season.
You immediately text Ellie: Why didn’t you just tell me you didn’t need tutoring anymore?
She responds immediately: I was hoping you wouldn’t find out and you would keep tutoring me
You shake your head in frustration and text her: Call me!
Seconds later your phone is ringing with a FaceTime call.
Ellie is holding her phone at a weird angle, like a dad that doesn’t know how to use a phone properly. She looks guilty as hell.
“Hey tutor girl.” Her smile is forced, and her freckles are accompanied by a bright flush.
“Did you really think they weren’t going to tell me?” You ask her this with a small smile. Seeing her all frazzled is pretty adorable. Ellie is undoubtedly hot, but seeing her be cute melts your heart.
Ellie bites her lip for a moment while she thinks.“I guess I didn’t really think that through. But would you be able to keep tutoring me?”
“Ellie you are very smart, all you needed to do was learn how to study and you’ve done that. Besides, they already gave me someone else to tutor.” Losing your time with Ellie was always inevitable. She no longer has a reason to see you, you aren't sure where all this is coming from.
Ellie’s nose scrunches and her eyebrows furrow. “I can’t believe that you would- that they would- who even is it?”
“Elise Knolls,” you tell her calmly.
“She’s gay!” Ellie yells like she had said this girl is a murderer.
“Uh yeah, why does that matter?” Ellie has never truly wanted you, she wanted to kiss her tutor. But maybe that’s not the case?
A fire burns in her bright eyes. “Because- because you might start going out with- out to her softball games instead of my lacrosse games!” Is she really, you use this word with great haste, jealous?
You do your best to contain yourself. You want to laugh more than anything else, and tell her I told you so. “Ellie I will still try and come to as many of your games as I can.”
She looks like a little kid on Christmas. “For real?”
A smile that you don’t mind showing spreads across your face. “Yes. I promise.”
Ellie’s excitement starts to slide away after briefly living in the moment. “I still won’t actually see you. For tutoring. I think I still need it. I don’t want to lose… my momentum.”
“You have practice or a game after school everyday,” you remind her.
“Well my team has the first practice some days, but the guys team does on the other days” she explains, much more serious than she usually is.
You sigh. “I have my own work to get done.”
Ellie looks desperate at this point. “Well can we work together? I’ll only ask questions when I need to.” She is all but begging.
The idea is good, but only in theory. “You are prone to creating distractions.”
“I will tone it down.” Ellie promises. “I don’t want to lose this opportunity to spend time with you. So that you can help me with school, of course.”
This is something you really want to make work. You don’t want to lose Ellie either. She is the best pain in the ass you’ve ever had. “We can try it. If I can get as much work done as I need to, we will continue. If you can’t keep your dinosaur rants and space explanations to a minimum we won’t.”
Ellie is giddy to the point where she might giggle. “Tutor girl, you are the best, thank you. You won’t regret this.”
“If I do, we won't keep doing it,” you emphasize.
“I promise. Thank you.” Her expression changes though. “I do have to ask, about this Elise girl, how do you feel about… tutoring her?” Ellie’s low voice and serious tone make your heart race. It’s hot as hell.
“I know her, don’t really know anything about her grades though. We’ve never really been in any classes together.” You explain.
“Then how do you know her?” She continues to interrogate.
“We frequent some of the same social events.”
“Do you mean parties?” You nod. “You go to parties?” She is in genuine shock.
You roll your eyes but smile through it. “Yeah, there are parties besides the ones thrown by the 1%.”
Ellie switches back into detective mode. “So do you guys like, hang out at these parties?” You give her another nod.
“When I say hang out, are you picking up what I’m putting down?” Her eyes are wide with anticipation.
Ellie is going to keep pushing until she gets the information she wants. She's nothing if not persistent. “We’ve hooked up…” her face contorts as if she ate something sour. You mumble “quite a few times.”
“Oh.” If her eyes weren’t already so green they would be now. The jealousy has taken over.
Not the best note to end this call on, but you really need to review topics for a tutoring session tomorrow. “How about you text me what your schedule looks like this week and we figure things out from there.”
“I can do that.”
“Bye Space Nerd.”
“Bye tutor girl.”
Monday morning when you get to your locker there is a rose tucked into one of the holes. Weird. Upon opening it you find a note that says ‘thank you again -E.”
Walking to your homeroom you overhear the girl that had been flirting with Ellie after her game the other day talking to one of her friends.
“Ellie hardly even paid any attention to me on Saturday. I wanted to take her upstairs but she wasn’t interested. I didn’t see her go upstairs with any girls, I don’t know what her deal is.”
After school you meet Ellie in the library. She is there first, in the back corner, even though it is empty.
There is something different about her today, but you can’t identify it immediately. Her hair is the same, she is wearing jeans, a flannel, and converse like she normally does. Looking past her physical appearance, there has been a change in her disposition.
Ellie is confident as always, but lacks her typical cockiness. She already has her things ready to get started on her work, and is waiting for you with a smile. And not just a polite ‘thank you for doing this for me’ smile. More so an ‘enchanted by your presence’ smile. This may lead to cardiac arrest.
Ellie takes a moment to look into your eyes, searching for something unbeknownst to you. “Tutor girl, I’m glad you could make it.”
“I told you I would be here,” you remind her teasingly.
She picks up a pencil and starts fidgeting with it. “Yeah, but I’m still not sure why you agreed to this. I’m a headache, why would you deal with me more than you have to?”
“Well you are a pain in the ass,” a gorgeous one, you think to yourself. “But you’ve grown on me. And I didn’t want to stop seeing you… continue to do.”
“I will help you with your work if you ever need it. Not sure how, but I will do my best.” This offer makes you believe she is eager to please you. This brings as much shock as it does a growing desire in the pit of your stomach. There are a lot of ways she could please you…
“Thank you space nerd, that’s very sweet.”
Ellie looks at you with starry eyes and as much as you want to live in that moment you know that you shouldn’t. “I have a lot of work to do, we should get started.” You were her tutor, you helped her do what she loves the most, playing lacrosse. This mild infatuation isn’t coming from anywhere but her appreciation for you. It’ll pass. You can’t forget that.
Ellie starts reading Lord of the Flies while you highlight and make notes in a textbook.
You had started about 90 degrees, or pi/2 radians, away from each other around the circular table. However, when she asks her first question you notice that she is closer to you. You assume that is because it would be easier for you to see the quote she is referring to.
That is until you switch from reading to doing physics, and she is even closer than before. You side eye her and she just smiles innocently.
It’s not long until her arm is brushing up against yours and she moves her knee so that it is leaning into your leg.
You roll your eyes. “Can I help you?”
“No thank you,” she says, not even looking up from her book.
“Then what are you doing?”
“Just getting cozy.”
You put your pencil down. “I wouldn’t call this professional.”
Ellie’s naive facade is replaced by a smirk. “You said no distractions, you didn’t say anything about keeping it professional.”
“As long as you can keep getting your work done,” you warn her and she nods.
“One question though.” She leans over, chest pressing against your arm, to point to an equation on your paper.
“Did you write that E there for Ellie?” She looks at you with great suspense.
“This is distracting,” you chastise her.
“Fine. What does E stand for?” Ellie asks this with what seems to be genuine curiosity.
You are happy to explain since she isn’t doing it to push your buttons. “Well it’s the Greek letter epsilon, not E. Denotes permittivity.”
Ellie continues to look over everything on your paper. “What is permittivity?”
“The resistance to electric field formation.”
That earns a laugh. “Fun.”
“Extremely pleasurable.” At the word pleasurable her eyes wander over you, hungrily taking in every inch. She sees you looking back at her the same way and licks her lips before agreeing not to distract you anymore.
You get back to work but she doesn’t, you can see her watching you out of the corner of your eye. You choose to ignore this, you are no longer responsible for micromanaging her. You finish up your physics and ask Ellie when she needs to leave. She's got about 15 minutes.
“Well I don’t want to get started on anything new right now. Do you have any questions before we finish up?” You ask this expecting her to say no and be done. She hasn’t read anything since you last checked in.
“Yes,” she declares with a devilish smile. She leans in, and you feel her warm breath on your ear when she whispers “what would you do if I went to touch you now?”

Surprisingly, it wasn’t that difficult to reveal your relationship with Tabito to the rest of your friends and classmates. There wasn’t an official announcement or anything along those lines — neither of you were that big on social media, so you didn’t bother with launching each other there, and since half of the school already thought you were dating, things settled into an even rhythm quite quickly.
Tabito’s friends and teammates weren’t all-too-shocked, either. Apparently, you were just about the last person to find out about the crush he had had on you since middle school, so to everyone else, him asking you out had been all but foregone conclusion. What your respective circles were surprised about, at least at first, was that you had said yes.
You’re way too hot for him. This was what Tabito’s group said upon finding out about the news, which was met with crabbiness from Tabito and nothing more than a snort from you. They were just messing with him in any way they could, considering how difficult it typically was to find cracks in his flawless demeanor, so it was easy to dismiss. On the other hand, your own friends gave you confused looks — weren’t you just talking about how much you hate him? You could only shrug, because they weren’t wrong, exactly. You had been complaining about him only days previously, but it was funny how quickly things could change. They accepted it without much more questioning, however, congratulating you on finally getting a boyfriend, and after that life continued as it previously had, except now whenever your friend groups decided to hang out together, you would find yourself at Tabito’s side instead of as far as possible from him.
Being his official girlfriend was everything you had expected and more. He got along well with your parents — your father remembered his name and asked you how he was doing constantly, and your mother was always pleased by the steady supply of flowers he provided for your kitchen counter — as well as your friends, managing to strike that elusive balance of showing them kindness without being overly involved in their lives. His family adored you, especially his older sister, who frequently took you out shopping or for coffee, much to Tabito’s chagrin. All in all, things were going well, and though you two still competed over your grades, it was without the fervor of the past, so that you were gladder for one another’s success than you were incensed by them.
“I hate couples,” your best friend announced one day at lunch. You had finished eating early, so you were leaning against Tabito’s arm and playing Subway Surfers on his phone while he talked to one of his teammates about their upcoming match. Ever since you had discovered his penchant for the childish game, it had become a personal goal of yours to beat his high score, though you had not yet even come close.
“Hm,” you said. She scowled.
“I’m serious!” she said.
“You’re just mad because you’re single,” you said. “I told you I’m working on it, didn’t I? It’s not my fault all of Tabito’s friends are losers!”
She sighed. “I know. Actually, you two aren’t the ones that prompted me to say that this time, oddly enough.”
“Oh, then who did?” you said.
“You know how I went to visit my cousins last weekend?” she said. You nodded. “Well, we went to watch a movie while we were there, that new one I was really excited about, but somehow it ended up that we got stuck behind this guy on a date!”
“How’d you know that he was on a date?” you said.
“Because there was a girl sitting next to him, and he sucked her face off for the entire movie, thereby completely blocking the screen. Can you believe it? The worst part is, he was totally stupid looking!” she said.
“That’s annoying,” you said, secure in the knowledge that you and Tabito would never do something like that. Public displays of affection beyond hugging or holding hands weren’t really your vibe, and just the thought of making out in a movie theater caused you to feel nauseous. “How’d you know he was dumb looking, though? Wasn’t the theater dark?”
“I confronted him afterwards,” she said.
“While he was on a date? That’s a bold move,” you said. “What did the girl say?”
Huh? Oh, she had already left. Guess she wasn’t that into him,” your best friend said.
“Yikes,” you said before pouting as your little Subway Surfers character was hit by a train. “Aw, man, I died. At this rate, I’ll never beat the high score.”
“Hey, can I have my phone for a second?” Tabito said, turning to you and plucking the device out of your hand before you could answer. You frowned, so he patted you on the head. “I’ll give it back. I just need to text our coach and remind him to bring my cooler back during the game tonight.”
“Whatever,” you said before directing your attention towards your best friend again. “Okay, describe this guy. I’m really interested in what could have driven you to judge his appearance so harshly.”
“Listen!” she said. “His hair was green!”
“Green?” you said.
“Yes! Well, mostly it was a grayish white, but there was a green streak, and the undercut part was also green,” she said. You tried to picture it and found you were entirely incapable of imagining anything but the most ridiculous of styles.
“That’s wild,” you said. “Who told him that was a good idea?”
“I just wonder how much bleach he has to use to get it to be that color,” she said. You shuddered.
“I know for a fact that he had the most damaged, dead, crunchy-looking hair ever,” you said. Your best friend shook her head.
“It was actually pretty shiny and luscious,” she said. “If it weren’t for the weird choice of color and his terrible theater etiquette, I could see why someone might consider him attractive.”
“Maybe you can fix him,” you suggested. She immediately scowled in a clear-cut refusal.
“The main thing I’ve learned from your relationship with Karasu is that you can never fix a man’s hair, no matter how much he likes you,” she said.
“Huh? Did you say my name?” Tabito said, handing you his phone back. “What’s up?”
“Nothing,” you and your best friend said in unison.
“That was suspicious,” he informed you.
“Just know that I’ll break up with you if you ever dye even a strand of your hair green,” you said.
He gave you an odd look. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Anyways, that’s my rant for the day,” your best friend said as Tabito evidently decided it would be for the best to leave you to your own conversation, which he was missing far too much context from to possibly understand.
“That really is awful,” you said. “Don’t worry. Someday soon, we’ll find you someone to date, and then you can be the annoying couple everyone slanders. Trust me on that one.”
“I do,” she said. “I have faith that you’re just being picky because you love me so much that you refuse to let me be with a substandard man.”
“Exactly,” you said.
She made a heart with her hands. “You’re the best.”
“I try!”
Now that autumn was bleeding into winter, it was getting chillier and chillier out during Bambi Osaka’s games. Thankfully, Tabito had draped his large jacket over your shoulders before running off to yell at his coach for once again forgetting to bring his cooler back, so you were mostly protected from the frost in the air. You could not say the same for the Bambi Osaka boys, who all looked miserably cold as they jogged in place, trying to warm up in their shorts and jerseys while Tabito and the coach argued.
“Y/N! I didn’t realize you were coming today!” a familiar voice said, its owner leaning over the fence separating the bleachers from the field. You extended your hand to ruffle his hair.
“I come to all of your games, Hiori, why would this one be any different?” you said. He gave you a sheepish grin.
“I know, but now that’s it not as nice out, I thought you might not,” he said. You pulled on the sleeve of your jacket to draw attention to it; Hiori grunted in approval when he noticed.
“Don’t worry, Tabito’s on top of it. Just between us two, I think he would cry if I had to miss one of his games, so he always makes sure I’m as comfortable as possible when I come,” you said.
“He’s a really considerate guy,” Hiori said. As if on cue, both of you turned to look at where he and their coach were still going at it.
“Holy fucking shit!” Tabito screamed. “Give me my cooler back, dude, you’ve had it for weeks!”
“I need it for the party I’m throwing this Saturday!” their coach shouted back.
“I don’t give a damn about your party! Give me back my cooler!”
“Right,” you said, stifling a laugh. “Super considerate.”
Hiori cringed. “I guess nobody’s perfect.”
Ever since you had started dating Tabito, Hiori had become something of a permanent fixture in your life. He never tried to flirt with you or anything — you didn’t even think he was capable of having those feelings — but he was just so used to trailing after Tabito that, by extension, he began to follow you around as well. It wasn’t really that bad; you both lived close to one another, and frequently he’d ask you to come to the convenience store with him so he could ask you for advice under the guise of buying snacks together. You always went along with it, as you sensed he didn’t have many other sources of reliable help and wisdom.
For his part, Tabito didn’t really mind that Hiori’s attachment to him now included you. The thought of being jealous of the younger boy never even crossed his mind, mostly because he, too, didn’t really believe that the gentle and benign Hiori was capable of anything as underhanded as stealing his girlfriend. Overall, he was more bemused than anything, treating him with the careful fondness of someone who had been given a puppy they had no idea how to care for but found cute anyways.
Soon enough, Tabito joined you and Hiori, dragging his feet and hanging his head as he flopped against the fence. Exhaling, you reached out and stroked the side of his face with the back of your hand.
“Any success?” you said.
“Nope,” he said. “Another week without my cooler.”
“At least it’s getting to be winter,” Hiori said. “You won’t really need it to keep your drinks chilled for a while, right?”
“Tell that to my sister,” Tabito said. “She keeps bugging me about where I put it. I guess she needs it for college or something. Don’t ask me why.”
“I’m sure he’ll bring it to the next game,” Hiori said optimistically. Tabito let out a defeated sigh.
“We can only hope,” he said.
“In the meantime, you two should go over with the rest of your team before you both get yelled at for slacking off and get me banned from coming to anymore games,” you said.
“If he keeps holding my cooler hostage and bans you from games, I’ll fight that dumbass coach!” Tabito said. You pushed him away affectionately.
“Alright, alright, I feel very comforted by that. Thank you for defending my — and your cooler’s — honor,” you said. “Go play soccer.”
With a joking salute, Tabito, and also Hiori, ran off to join the rest of their team, and you settled back to sit with the rest of the attendees of the game, who were mostly parents of the players. All of them knew who you were at this point, though, so you were welcomed with open arms, easily joining in on their discussions about such subjects as how their children were doing in school and what their plans for dinner were.
It was a comfortable existence, and as you pulled Tabito’s jacket tighter around you, you thought that you could get used to it. If only things could stay exactly like this, you would be quite happy. If you could spend every day with Tabito and Hiori and the rest of your friends, you would never complain again.
Unfortunately, life was always changing, as you knew all too well. One day, both Tabito and Hiori received letters summoning them to some soccer training camp far away from your corner of the country, and though Hiori leapt at the chance, Tabito was initially uncertain at the prospect of leaving everything behind for a program that wasn’t even a sure thing.
“What if it doesn’t help me and I give up my schooling for it?” he said, pacing around his bedroom. You raised your eyebrows at him from your seat at his desk, where you were working on a lab report for Chemistry. “Do they really expect me to run there during my last year of high school? What about board exams and college? How am I supposed to get into a good university if I’m playing soccer when I should be studying?”
“Why do you think you won’t succeed in the program?” you said. “You’re amazing at soccer. If you join, you’ll definitely do well, and then you’ll become a professional athlete, so you won’t have to worry about college or anything like that.”
“Of course I’ll do well,” he said. This actually wasn’t anything like his normal self-confidence; when he was in this kind of mood, he didn’t brag, he only evaluated himself and the situation honestly, weighing the costs and benefits until he could come to a conclusion that he was satisfied with. “I just don’t like the thought of not having a fallback option. Even if I become a professional athlete, things like injuries can happen to anyone. It’s not smart to not have a backup plan. That’s why I wasn’t planning on trying out for the U-20 squad until after I got accepted to a university.”
“You can’t give up on your dreams for the sake of a backup plan, though,” you said, finishing up the report and clicking the submit button, shutting your laptop and spinning the chair around so you were looking at him. “I know it’s nerve-wracking, but isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?”
“No,” he said bluntly.
Blue Lock and its outcomes were like the water — entirely out of Tabito’s control, and hence something he was automatically opposed to. But unlike swimming and wading, this was also an opportunity for him to pursue his greatest dreams, so you stood and grabbed him by the shoulders. He halted in his tracks, cocking his head at you as you clasped his hands in between your own and gave him the sternest look you could muster.
“Listen to me,” you said. “You are not going to drown. You’re not because I say you’re not, and have I ever led you astray? You’re going to go to this Blue Lock place with Hiori, and then the two of you are going to come back and be so good at soccer that you immediately join the national team and end up so rich and famous that I can’t help but marry you and become your trophy wife.”
“When you say you, you’re referring to me, not Hiori, right?” he checked with a snicker. You poked him in the chest.
“Obviously,” you said.
“Do you really think it’ll be okay?” he said.
“I think you won’t know if you don’t try. You’re so smart, Tabito; even if you somehow fail as a soccer player, I don’t think you’ll be unable to go to college. In fact, you could probably do this camp, come back and take your exams while on a break, and still get second in our class,” you said.
“Second?” he said.
“Of course, I’ll be the one getting first,” you said. “Second is still respectable, though. Any university of note would kill to have you, but a chance to improve your soccer career like this might not come around again for a while, if ever. Take it. Take it with both hands and don’t regret it a bit, okay?”
“You’re convincing,” he said, embracing you tightly, burying his face in the crook of your neck. “Thank you.”
“So you’ll do it?” you said.
“I’ll do it.”
A week later, he was gone. Even his phone was taken away, leaving you without any manner of contacting him in the meantime. To be sure, it was lonely, but you were too busy being proud of him to be depressed about it. Besides, you weren’t the type to abandon your friends just because you were in a relationship, so your invitations to events had never stopped coming. Now, you just said yes to them more often, much to everyone’s excitement.
That was what you did while Tabito was busy at Blue Lock: you hung out with your friends, having sleepovers and going for platonic dates with the ones you were particularly close with, and you visited his sister at her college when she was free, so you could hear embarrassing stories about his past, which you carefully filed away for later use. Occasionally, you even met up with Yukimiya’s girlfriend — in a shocking twist, he had also been invited to Blue Lock, much like Tabito — and the two of you would speculate about what your boyfriends might be up to in that strange facility and whether they might’ve met each other yet or not.
It wasn’t horrible. Undeniably, you missed him, but it was bearable, and you knew he would be back as soon as he could be, so for the most part, you didn’t let yourself grow too sad. Your father was probably the worst off out of anyone, actually, always nagging you about when Tabito would return. He had grown used to having a friend to watch sports alongside, and was now entirely forlorn without any company to discuss his beloved games with.
Some weeks after Blue Lock began, you received two emails with nearly identical subject headers. With a confused frown, you opened both of them in turn, but slowly, your expression turned to a smile as you read over their contents.
Congratulations, Y/N L/N! Blue Lock 11 player number 6, Tabito Karasu, has designated you as the recipient of his friends/family ticket to the Blue Lock 11 vs Japan U-20 match! Scan the attached QR code upon your arrival to the stadium in order to make your way to your VIP seat.
Congratulations, Y/N L/N! Blue Lock 11 substitute number 16, Yo Hiori, has designated you as the recipient of his friends/family ticket to the Blue Lock 11 vs Japan U-20 match! Scan the attached QR code upon your arrival to the stadium in order to make your way to your VIP seat.
Both Tabito and Hiori had chosen to give you their seats, which meant you technically had an extra one, so you could bring someone along with you. Your first thought was your father, considering how much he loved soccer, but then you pondered it further and decided that you probably did not want to spend the whole match listening to him explaining the rules. Plus, the game was in Tokyo, so if the two of you went together, you both would have to share a hotel room, and he’d make you spend the entire trip with him instead of exploring and possibly seeing Tabito, if you got the chance.
No, there was really only one choice. With an aunt who lived in the city and a deep-rooted desire to get a boyfriend, your best friend was the clear pick to take along with you to the game, and you knew before you even asked that she would agree to it. After all, what better way was there for you both to spend the two weeks of your last winter break before university?
As you had expected, she agreed enthusiastically and readily, texting you that her aunt was alright with you two staying at her place, as long as you didn’t mind that she’d probably be busy with work most of the time. Of course, this was more of a benefit than a drawback, so you forwarded the email containing Hiori’s invitation to her and immediately began the process of packing for your two week vacation.
Since you would be staying with a responsible adult — meaning your best friend’s aunt, not her herself — your parents didn’t mind that you were going on a mini-trip without them. Your father already knew about the game thanks to his subscription to the JFU’s magazine, and he was so exhilarated at the thought of you getting to attend it in person that you almost felt bad not telling him that he could’ve come, too. Then you imagined having to sleep in a twin bed while he snored in the one across from you and stopped feeling guilty entirely.
“Do you think it would be corny if I wore blue to the game?” you said when the day of the match dawned. You had made a mess of your suitcase trying to decide what you wanted to wear, and when you looked over at your best friend’s side of the room, you noticed that it was in a similar state.
“Maybe a little bit,” she said. “At least, if you went for an all-blue Smurf aesthetic. It would kind of make you look like a mascot or something.”
“I was thinking about that,” you said. “Ugh! This is so hard. Normally, I just wear one of Tabito’s jackets or extra jerseys at his games, so that I look all supportive and whatnot, but it’s kind of hard to do that when I haven’t even spoken to him in weeks and have zero clue what his Blue Lock jersey looks like.”
“That one coat you brought is his, right? You could wear that with a blue shirt underneath it so that it’s subtle but still clear which side you’re on,” she suggested. You closed your eyes, mentally putting the clothes on and deciding that it was a great outfit idea, giving off the exact effect you were aiming for.
“I knew ‘Hiori’ invited you for a reason,” you said. She chucked a pillow at you, fully aware that she was only even going to the game because you had been invited by both Bambi Osaka boys.
“I’ll be sure to thank him when I see him,” she said.
“Do you know what he looks like?” you said.
“No, but won’t his jersey say his name?” she reasoned.
“Touché,” you said. “Anyways, what are you going to wear?”
“It needs to be something casual but also cute, so if any of the players — the single ones, anyways — happen to look up at me, they are instantly smitten and ask me for my number once they win the game, after which we date until I’ve graduated college and they’ve made it in the big leagues, whereupon they will propose to me and we will get married in the most extravagant wedding the world has ever seen,” she said.
“Um,” you said, your mind working overtime to comprehend the run-on. “Sure. In that case, maybe you should go with the sweater dress you brought. It’s not blue, but you look really pretty in it, and if you put on a longer cardigan along with some tights, you should stay warm. Maybe your aunt has a blue scarf you can borrow? If you want to look spirited.”
“You’re a genius!” she said.
“Thanks, I do my best,” you said before a silence lapsed between the two of you, both too busy getting ready to gossip, as you had been non-stop since you had arrived in Tokyo.
The ticket scanner definitely looked suspicious at the fact that both of you claimed to be named Y/N L/N, but there was nothing that she could do about it. After all, you both had unique invitations from two separate members of Blue Lock, so what did it matter what your names were? With a curt nod, she approved your tickets and described which way you had to go to get to your seats, though you were certain she was glaring at you as you walked in the direction she had indicated.
“Are you excited?” your best friend said, rubbing her hands together to warm them up.
“I’m more excited to see Tabito again than anything. No matter how the game goes, I’m happy if he’s there,” you said.
“I can’t believe you just said that,” she said. “Pining has made you a changed woman. The Y/N I once knew would never say anything along those lines.”
“Oh, but you can plan your wedding and it’s perfectly normal?” you said, raising your eyebrows. She gave you a double-thumbs-up.
“That’s all hypothetical, so it’s not an issue,” she said. “On the other hand, you being all sappy about Karasu is reality.”
“You have a point,” you said. “My apologies. Moving on, are you excited?”
“Just to see if the players are good looking,” she said. “I don’t know that much about soccer.”
“It’s okay, I don’t, either,” you said.
“Your boyfriend is literally on the team?” she said.
“Look, as long as someone on our side kicks the ball into the net, I’m happy,” you said. “If someone on the other side kicks the ball into the net, then I’m sad. That’s kind of the gist of it. Tabito and Hiori have tried explaining the finer details of the sport, but to be honest, it’s a bit beyond me.”
“Excuse me, but is anyone sitting with you two?” a bright voice said. You looked up to see a tall girl with cascading red hair and a brilliant grin pointing at the seat on your left with a questioning tilt to her head.
“Nope,” you said. Unfortunately, Yukimiya’s girlfriend’s school break didn’t align with the game, and she had regretfully told you over the phone that she would be unable to make it, so you and your best friend were on your own. “All yours!”
“Thanks!” she said. “My mother went to go sit with the other parents, and I was planning on going with her, but you two look closer to my age, so I was hoping it would be alright if I stayed here instead.”
“Believe me, I get it,” you said. “I’ve had to hang out with way too many parents at Tabito’s games. They’re nice and all, but most of the stuff they talk about is hardly relatable.”
“Exactly!” she said. “I can’t explain how happy I am to have found you two. I’m Hyoma Chigiri’s sister, by the way! According to the email we got, he’s number 4. Which players do you both know?”
“I’m number 6’s girlfriend,” you said, motioning down towards where the players were beginning to enter the field, getting some last-minute practice in before the game. “Tabito Karasu.”
You wished he would look over so you could wave at him, but he was utterly focused on his teammates and their warm up, so you contented yourself with admiring him from afar. It was clear to anyone that he was in his element, and a lump formed in your throat when you remembered that he had almost given this up. He had almost stayed back, and you could not even begin to fathom how much he would have regretted it if he had.
“I see him!” Chigiri said, shading her eyes with her hand so she didn’t have to narrow them against the sun. “My brother’s right over by where he is.”
Her brother was almost identical to her, a lean boy with flowing hair and a pointed face, and even if she hadn’t pointed him out, you would’ve made the connection.
“He looks just like you,” your best friend said, vocalizing what you had been thinking.
“We get that a lot,” Chigiri said. “What about you? Who are you with?”
“Technically, I’m not with anyone,” your best friend said. “The thing is, both Karasu and number 16, Yo Hiori, invited Y/N, so I just took her extra — what the fuck.”
“Is everything okay?” you said. Both you and Chigiri shot her concerned looks, but she was too busy staring at the field with her jaw dropped to pick up on it. “Hello? What’s gotten into you?”
“Y/N L/N,” she said. “Why is your boyfriend talking to that — that — that creature? Why is that thing even on the field in the first place?”
“Number 9?” Chigiri said. “Do you know him?”
True to her word, Tabito was speaking animatedly to player number 9, who according to his jersey was named Otoya. He was a slender and clearly handsome boy, his pale hair streaked through with green and his features distinctly sharp despite the distance. For some reason, there was something familiar about his description, and it was only when you noticed that your best friend was all but seething that the conversation came back to you.
“Are you serious?” you said. “That Otoya dude is the theater guy?”
“Deadly serious,” she snapped. “What is he doing here? Shouldn’t he be off ruining innocent moviegoers’ experiences?”
“Playing soccer, I’d expect,” you said. “It looks like he’s starting for the Blue Lock 11, too. He must be good — I mean, even Hiori is just a substitute, and he’s crazy talented, so their starting lineup must be nothing short of spectacular.”
The two teams got into position as the clock was set up, and a hush fell over the stadium as the ball was brought onto the field for the kickoff. Unexpectedly, Chigiri grabbed your hand, clutching it so tightly that your circulation was impaired, and when you glanced over at her, you saw that her shoulders were tense.
“Hyoma tore his ACL recently,” she murmured. “He never said it aloud, but I think he’s wanted to quit soccer ever since. This is the first time he’s starting in a game since before he was injured. I’m worried it’ll happen again.”
You rubbed soothing circles against her wrist. “He’ll be alright. I don’t think they would put him in if it was a health risk. Plus, they have substitutes, and I’m sure he’s much more in-tune with his body now, so the second he feels something off, he’ll probably ask to be put out.”
Chigiri dabbed at her face. “Thanks. You’re right. This is an exciting game! I shouldn’t bring down the mood. Let’s get ready to cheer our lungs out!”
The referee blew the whistle, and then the match was on. You could hardly keep up with the players’ movements, so fast was it all; this was a level of skill that even you could recognize was far above anything you had ever seen. Every single player on the pitch was at least on Tabito and Hiori’s level, if not above it. Unlike Bambi Osaka, where Tabito was the captain of the team and often had to play doubly as aggressively because of that, he blended right into the mix of talents that was this motley collection of high school forwards. You could tell even from so far away that this thrilled him instead of grating on his nerves; he wasn’t the kind of person who craved the spotlight, after all. If anything, it was something he shied away from, preferring to strike at his opponent’s weak points from the dark, and it was only here, with the rest of the Blue Lock 11, that he could finally play how he preferred.
When the first goal on Blue Lock’s side was scored, by the tall, pale-haired number 7, you, your best friend, and Chigiri shot to your feet, screaming and clapping as loud as you could. Your enthusiasm, which was a stark contrast to everyone else’s quiet confusion, sparked a tidal wave. The entire stadium resounded with a roar of approval as the number 7 — Nagi — crashed to the ground before raising his fist, getting tackled by his teammates directly afterwards in celebration.
“That was amazing!” your best friend said as everyone settled for the restart. “I never realized that soccer could be so exciting to watch.”
“That guy is skilled,” you agreed. “So is everyone else. Including that Otoya—”
“Don’t even mention him!” she said. “Nagi’s the one who scored, so stick to praising him!”
“Hyoma’s doing so well!” Chigiri said, her cheeks pink from the cold and round from her grin. “I can’t believe it. It’s like he was never hurt at all!”
“Honestly, this is way more intense than I expected,” your best friend said, hugging herself tightly. “I really hope they manage to win.”
“They will,” you said. “I’m confident of that.”
Maybe the Blue Lock 11 were the underdogs, but something told you that they were going to win. There was just this fire to them, a heat and a hatred that emanated off of only their side of the field. The docile U-20 boys, who were so dependent on the efforts of defender Aiku and midfielder Sae, could never hope to compete with that overwhelming energy, which was so potent that the bleachers themselves were washed in it.
That was why you weren’t even surprised when number 10, Rin, scored another goal right before half-time, ending the first half with a lead for Blue Lock. You knew for a fact that your voice would be hoarse the next day from how much you were shouting, but based on your best friend’s and Chigiri’s faces, you figured you were in good company and didn’t even take any measures to lessen the severity of the consequence.
As the players began to move towards their respective locker rooms, Chigiri stood up and began to wave her hands frantically.
“Hyoma! Over here!” she called out. Her brother paused in the middle of drinking from his water bottle, whipping around, his face turning the same shade as his hair when he noticed his sister, who pulled out her phone and took a picture of him. “He noticed me! Ah, hello, Hyoma! You’re doing awesome!”
Tabito and Otoya walked past where the younger Chigiri was frozen in place, and before they could vanish into the locker room and out of your sight, you cupped your hands around your mouth.
“Tabito!” you said. He stopped in his tracks before twisting back to face you, his face breaking into such a wide grin when he saw you that it was a wonder his face did not ache from it. He raised his hand in greeting, and you did the same, so relieved to see him again that you thought you might vomit from the giddiness.
Beside you, your best friend stood, drawing herself to her full height. Then, before you could stop her, she jabbed her finger towards Otoya, who had remained at Karasu’s side when he had stopped to greet you. Otoya turned his head this way and that before pointing at himself hesitantly. Your best friend nodded and then stuck up her middle finger at him, causing Tabito to burst into a fit of laughter, his shoulders shaking as he dragged the helpless Otoya away from where he was suddenly rooted to the ground in perplexity.
“That’s what he gets,” she said with satisfaction, sitting back down now that she had accomplished her mission.
“He probably has no idea who you are,” you said, giggling to yourself, finding great entertainment in the one-sided feud she had with Otoya, who appeared to be a great friend of Tabito’s. “Also, you described him horribly back then. He’s really pretty good-looking, and the hair is nowhere near as bad as you made it sound.”
“I’m telling Karasu you said that,” she said. “If I was him, I’d be offended! My beloved girlfriend finds a guy who appears to be fresh out of the swamp attractive? That would really make me insecure.”
“I don’t find him attractive, I just said that he’s good looking. It’s objective,” you said. “And fresh out of the swamp? Aren’t you being a little harsh?”
She glared at you. “No way. He owes me the price of the ticket he made me waste, but since he obviously isn’t going to pay me back, I’m going to make as much fun of him as possible.”
“You do that,” you said, judging that there was no arguing with her. “Chigiri, do you want any snacks? I’m going to head to the concession stands while there’s a break.”
“Could you get me some fries? I’ll send you the money,” she said.
“As long as you save my seat,” you said.
“Of course! Go quickly, I’m sure the lines are going to be long. There’s a lot of people here,” she said.
“Good idea,” you said, racing off and cutting through the crowds swarming the many concession stands so that you could get some fries for her, candy for your best friend, and chips for yourself.
The second half was even more exciting than the first, though you hadn’t previously thought that that was possible. A boy named Shidou, who had something like a current crackling through him, joined the U-20s as their striker, and in quick succession, he managed to not only tie up the score but actually get a lead, thereby undoing all of the work that Nagi and Rin had put in. To make things worse, right after Shidou’s first goal, Hyoma Chigiri collapsed, earning a gasp from his sister as she shoved a fistful of fries in her mouth. Simultaneously, one of their defenders, the number 3, stumbled before slumping over entirely
“It looks like a cramp,” you reassured Chigiri as one of the other players helped her brother stretch out his leg and then stand. “And I think Niko must’ve sprained his ankle during that earlier play. They’re going to have to put in alternates, but it’s not serious. Both of them just need some rest and they’ll be okay.”
“If you say so,” she said, biting her lip.
“No way, is that Reo Mikage?” your best friend said, her eyes wide as a tall, well-built boy took Niko’s place on the field. He had purple hair tied back in a messy ponytail, and a desperate sort of anger simmered beneath his serene exterior. You squinted and found she was right — the name Reo was indeed written above the large number 14 on his back.
“Like the corporate heir?” you said. Everyone who was anyone knew about the Mikages, but what business did the son have playing soccer? Then again, you supposed even the wealthiest people in the world had to have hobbies. Maybe soccer was just what filled the void for him. You supposed you couldn’t really comment either way.
“I’m sure of it!” your best friend said. “Oh, man, Y/N, he’s even more gorgeous in person…do you think Karasu knows him? Can I get an introduction? He’s so dreamy and perfect and amazing and unreal!”
“I can ask. I’m sure they’re at least acquainted, considering they’re playing on the same team — wait! Look, it’s Hiori! Oh my goodness, it’s Hiori! Yay, yay, Hiori! You’ve got this!” you squealed, pointing at him insistently. He was the one going in for Chigiri, and though he seemed solemn, you knew he must be nothing less than agitated at the moment. You willed him to glance up at you, and whether it was divine intervention or just a coincidence, he happened to shift towards your direction and thus made direct eye contact with you.
Immediately, any gloominess dropped from his shoulders, and you showed him your fingers, which were crossed for luck. He mimicked the gesture before running out to the field, where Otoya patted him on the back in greeting.
“Somebody save that poor, innocent boy,” your best friend said as the game began again.
“Hiori? From what?” you said.
“From being corrupted and turned into a bad-mannered asshole by Otoya,” she said.
“Fair enough,” you said before your jaw dropped as Reo Mikage perfectly mimicked Aiku’s signature defensive move, stopping Shidou from scoring yet again. “Woah. Reo’s rich and a soccer genius? I thought you were full of bullshit earlier, but you actually might be onto something.”
“Exactly,” your best friend said with a smitten sigh. “What a man.”
Despite Reo’s prowess and the goalie’s unorthodox methods, they were ultimately unable to stop Shidou from making that second goal. As the U-20 boys celebrated and the referee called for the ball to be retrieved, Blue Lock’s number 11, Isagi, stomped over to the sideline where their coach was sitting.
“They look like they’re arguing,” Chigiri said. “Do you think everything is alright?”
You weren’t sure when or how you had become the designated soccer expert, but for some reason, both Chigiri and your best friend looked at you expectantly, like you knew what the hell Isagi was pressed about.
“Maybe he’s mad about his cooler?” you said.
“Huh?” your best friend said.
“Never mind,” you said. “Uh, if I had to guess, he’s probably either asking the coach to give them a new strategy or calling for their substitute to be put in. Shidou and Sae have backed them into a corner, and if they don’t switch things up soon, they’re going to lose.”
“Looks like Karasu and Hiori taught you more than you realized,” your best friend said as Isagi jogged back to the field and the referee whistled to call for a pause to the game. One of the benched Blue Lock members, their number 13, stood up, and you actually shivered when he did. He made every single other player look like a gentle kitten in comparison to his hulking presence, even those towering monsters like Shidou and Aiku. There was no doubt about it; this was a beast amongst men, his fangs bared as he stormed onto the field, and the only thing you could not understand was why he had not been playing from the start.
“That guy is scary,” you said.
“Scary hot,” my best friend said.
“Moving on from Reo already?” you said. “This is why you’ll never have a boyfriend. Too fickle.”
“Listen, I have to keep my options open! Not everyone is lucky enough to have someone who’s good-looking, talented, and has been obsessed with them for years,” she said, elbowing you in the side with a smirk. You rolled your eyes, though you could not help but look down at Tabito when she said that. “What if I get rejected by Reo? I need to have another option, or else I’m fresh out of luck.”
“Looks like he’s replacing Otoya,” you said. “What’s his name? Barou? I’m interested to see how he does.”
“He’s getting rid of that wannabe bog monster? Even better! He’s quickly shooting up in my rankings,” my best friend said.
“Wannabe — okay, I’ll just be happy for you,” you said. “Though his hair isn’t so green as to deserve this much slander…”
“Thanks,” she said, ignoring the rest of what you had said.
“I hope they can make a comeback,” Chigiri stressed. “It’ll crush Hyoma if they lose.”
“No matter what happens now, he should be proud of how he did in the match,” you said. “Pass that message along when you see him, please. There’s no way he’s not going to get scouted by some seriously great clubs in the future.”
“You’re really kind,” Chigiri said, leaning her head on your shoulder with a sniffle. “I hope that Hyoma and your boyfriend stay on the same team for a while. Watching games is so much more fun with you.”
“Thanks! You as well. But speaking of being on the same team…” You whipped out your phone during the lull of the match, pulling up Yukimiya’s girlfriend’s contact and typing out a quick text.
‘are you watching the game??’
She responded almost immediately. ‘i convinced my parents to let me skip school so i could lol. i’m so stressed out right now!! karasu is playing super well btw.’
‘so is yukimiya!!’
‘thx!! omg also i saw you and your best friend on the screen HAHA.’
The last text was startling, to say the least. Nudging your best friend, you showed her the message, after which she took out her own phone, flipped on the camera, and checked her appearance in it.
‘no way. when??’
‘YES it was right after nagi scored in the first half. you two + the redhead were the ones who started the cheering, so they focused on you guys at first!! dw you all looked rlly pretty. as usual <3’
‘ohhh that makes sense. and tyyyy but you’re the pretty one here!!’
‘STOP you are the sweetest. also look at this LMAO they’re already making edits of you guys!!’
‘WHAT?!?!?!’
She sent you a link, which you opened with trepidation, beckoning Chigiri and your best friend over. Turning up the volume, you held up your phone as an edit of the three of you at various points in the match began to play. You were equally impressed and horrified at the speed with which the editors had gotten to work, but you couldn’t even be upset — whether it was the song or the clips they had chosen, the video made you all look magnificent. You saved it to your folder and then put your phone away, vowing to go through the comments later.
Mere minutes after you all tuned back into the flow of the game, Barou somehow pulled off a near-miraculous sliding shot, slamming the ball into the goal and once again tying back the score. This time, nobody was uncertain about what to do; every single person was on their feet, whooping as Barou tore off his jersey and tossed it in the air, flexing his arms and raising his chin as Tabito wrapped an arm around his neck, Nagi jumped on his back, and Isagi clapped him on the shoulder.
“Wow,” your best friend said.
“Wow is right! That was an incredible play. Barou is in another realm entirely!” you said, your palms stinging from how hard you were slapping them together. Your rudimentary soccer knowledge was apparently sufficient enough for you to keep up with the game, though just barely.
“Oh, I don’t know enough about soccer to be in awe of his goal,” she said. “I’m talking about those wow muscles of his. I bet he could carry me with one arm…”
“Ew, nasty,” you said, smacking her, fully aware of where her thoughts had just gone.
“Come on, you know it’s true!” she protested.
“I have a boyfriend. I’m not allowed to answer that,” you said.
“But you’re allowed to say that Otoya is good-looking?” she said.
“That was just me being nice!” you said.
“I sense favoritism,” she said. “And not even the good kind, because for some reason, you’re favoring the worst guy in the bunch! Since Karasu isn’t around to be disappointed in you, I’ll do it on his behalf.”
“Shut up,” you said half-heartedly. “I liked you better when you were in love with Reo.”
“Believe me, I still am,” she said. “He’s not the kind of person you get over easily.”
“Ah, and remind me of how many times you’ve spoken to him?”
“That’s not the point!”
The match was decided when Sae and Rin — who were supposedly brothers, according to the guys Chigiri had overheard while she was heading to the trash can — got into a fight for dominance over the ball. Somehow, it managed to end up in exactly the spot where Isagi was waiting, and without taking a moment to think, he drew his leg back. At the very last second of the game’s overtime, he sent it streaking into the net.
“They did it!” Chigiri shrieked, tackling you and your best friend in a hug.
“They did!” you shrieked back, equally as overwhelmed.
“I can’t believe it!” your best friend said. “They really pulled it off!”
With that one-goal lead, Blue Lock had managed it. They had won the game against the U-20s, thereby cementing their place in the world of soccer for good. Those whispered hopes that Tabito had shared with you, his dreams of being an athlete and playing the sport he loved…they were as you had always assured him: inevitabilities instead of impossibilities.
After all, you would say to him, over and over until you were sure he believed you. Do you think I would spend so long hating someone if they were mediocre? You can do whatever you turn your mind to. Whether it’s winning a soccer game or managing a company or getting the girl you like, your success is a guarantee.
The Blue Lock boys were ushered back to their facility after the game, so you didn’t get a chance to congratulate Tabito, but even being able to wave at him had lifted your spirits immensely, so you didn’t feel like you had wasted the trip.
In fact, you had a new pastime to occupy yourself with: namely, watching edits of yourself and liking all of the comments hyping you up. There were many of both, and when you weren’t listening to your best friend rambling about her favorite Blue Lock boy of the hour — Barou and Reo were definitely the ones she brought up the most, but Nagi and Isagi were mentioned a fair bit, too — you spent your hours on social media, sending the best edits to the group chat that you and your best friend had created with Yukimiya’s girlfriend and the elder Chigiri.
A couple of days after the game, you and your best friend were lounging in her aunt’s living room when you got a call from a number you had not seen on your phone in ages. Springing to your feet, you answered it immediately.
“Tabito? I thought they took your phone in Blue Lock?” you said.
“Hi, Y/N. Yes, they did, but we just got our stuff back and are on the buses back to the city. We’re on break for the next two weeks! Are you still in Tokyo?” he said.
“Yes! I’m here for about that amount of time — for all of winter break,” you said.
“Perfect. Some of the guys have plans to meet up in Shibuya tomorrow, but I don’t mind canceling—”
“Wait,” you cut him off, an idea formulating in your mind. “Are Barou, Nagi, Isagi, and Reo Mikage included when you say ‘some of the guys?’”
“Uh, I think Reo’s going to be there, but not any of the others. Why?” he said quizzically. Your best friend gave you a puzzled look, obviously wondering why you had just listed off her top Blue Lock crushes while on the phone with your boyfriend.
“Is it okay if we come, too?” you said. Tabito hummed uncertainly.
“Er, I don’t know…it’s not that I don’t want you to or that they’d mind or anything! In fact, they’d probably be delighted if you showed up. Rather, it’s that a few of them are a little bit odd, and you’d probably not enjoy yourself very much if you came,” he said.
“On the contrary, I think we would enjoy ourselves a great deal. Some of us more than others, naturally, but as long as you’re there, I’ll have fun, and as for my plus one…let’s just say that she could probably listen to a speech about the drying of cement, as long as it was Reo giving it,” you said.
“I see what’s happening here,” he said with a snort. “Okay, I got it. I’ll ask them and let you know what they say, alright?”
“If they say no, then tell them you can’t go and come hang out with me,” you instructed him. “I want to be with you tomorrow. I’ve missed you for far too long.”
“Will do. I miss you more.”
The line went abruptly dead, ostensibly from a lack of signal on his part, but now that you knew you were going to see him the next day either way, you just tossed the useless device aside and grinned devilishly at your best friend.
“What was that all about?” she said.
“Just go ahead and tell me you love me,” you said.
“I love you?” she said.
“And I love you,” you said. “So much that I’m making my boyfriend take us along on his group date with his soccer group — where none other than the man himself, Reo Mikage, will be present.”
About an hour or so later, Tabito texted you in the affirmative, sending you the address of the cafe where they were planning on meeting up at and giving you a rough estimate of the time they’d all be there. You and your best friend stayed up late that night, picking out your outfits — well, mostly hers, you were at the point in your relationship where you were positive that Tabito would find you pretty even in a trash bag, so you weren’t anywhere near worried about your own clothing — and planning what she’d say to sweep Reo off of his feet. Once you were done with that, you got in your pajamas and watched romantic comedies to get yourselves in ‘the zone’ and be completely prepared for the day to come, which might have qualified as one of the most important in her life.
You were the first ones at the cafe the next morning, so you took the liberty of choosing the largest table you could find and setting your things down before looking up their menu online. Your best friend, who was the one that had convinced you to be so obsessively punctual for fear of making a bad first impression on Reo, did the same, though she left two seats in between you and herself.
“Tell Karasu to sit next to you, and then have him get Reo to sit in between himself and me,” she said to you.
“Yup, I know the plan,” you said.
“Good,” she said. “Have you picked what you’re ordering? Since no one else is here yet, I can go in and grab stuff for both of us.”
“Yeah, I want this, and this,” you said, pointing at the exact menu items so that there was no room for misinterpretation.
“Mm, looks good,” she said. “Eek, I think there’s a line.”
“It’s peak brunch time,” you said. “We’re lucky to have gotten a table at all, let alone one so big. Just leave your sweater on your chair so no one else takes it. Unless you want me to go in instead?”
“Nope, I don’t want to look like a friendless loser if Reo gets here before you come back or the others show up,” she said.
“You should hurry up and join the queue before it gets any worse, then,” you said. “It would suck if you were stuck waiting and Reo left before you could even meet him.”
“I’m going!” she said, speeding into the cafe, the glass door clanging shut behind her. You laughed softly at how easy she was to rile up, resting your chin in your hands and regarding the bustling scenery of the street with adoration. Tokyo was different from home, but you didn’t mind the change. It was fun, anyways, coming up with backstories for the people who walked past, inquiring into their lives from the snippets you were shown with the curiosity of a squirrel.
“Is it okay if I sit here?” a light, playful voice said, distracting you from your thoughts. The speaker was a boy in a dark jacket, with headphones slung around his neck and a beanie pulled low over his hair, though a few stubborn strands poked out anyways — grayish-white strands, in specific, which were cut through by brilliant green. You swore under your breath. How had you not realized that he would be here as well? You could only hope that Reo would distract your best friend well enough that she would not flip out over Otoya’s presence
“You’re Otoya, right?” you said. At the mention of his name, he grinned and slid into the seat designated for Tabito, leaning his elbow on the table and batting his eyelashes at you.
“That’s me. How did you know? I’m certain we’ve not met before, because I’d remember a lady as pretty as yourself,” he said.
“You played in the match against the U-20s,” you said.
“You watched that?” he said. “I was pretty great, wasn’t I?”
“I don’t seem to remember you ever scoring,” you said thoughtfully. “And weren’t you subbed out? Ah, but yes, I was actually in the audience that day.”
Otoya wilted. “Oh. Were you rooting for the U-20s?”
“No, I was on Blue Lock’s side,” you said.
“Hold on, are you one of the guy’s sisters?” he said, stroking his chin and inspecting you. “Probably not Chigiri’s, but maybe Barou’s? I think he mentioned having younger sisters at one point. But I hope not, he’d definitely kill me for talking to you. Speaking of which, what are you even doing around here? Wanna go somewhere a bit nicer together?”
“I’m waiting for my boyfriend,” you said.
“Boyfriend?” Otoya said, face growing unnaturally pale. He inched his chair away from you. “Who’s your boyfriend?”
Before you could respond, a hand covered your eyes, blacking out your vision. “Guess who?”
“Tabito!” you said, standing up, yanking his hand away from you and kicking your chair out of the way so you could hug him. He was already waiting for you, pulling you to his chest immediately, burying his nose in your hair as he did when he was particularly tense or had been missing you.
“That’s correct. Gold star for Y/N,” he said.
Though it had been a while, now that you were back in his embrace, it felt like no time at all had passed. That was how it was between you and him, a product of the many years you both had known one another before ever dating. Tabito was as much your friend as he was your boyfriend, a confidante and a rival and a companion and a lover all wrapped into one package. There could not be secrets nor distance between the two of you, not when you both had been studying one another’s complexities since before you had even understood what it meant to pay such special attention to another person.
“Sit next to me,” you said, tugging on his coat.
“Sure thing,” he said. “Dude, move over.”
Otoya scrambled to his feet, taking the seat on Tabito’s other side and eyeing you warily, his cheeks flushed a light pink — no doubt due to that brand of humiliation which was borne from trying to get with one’s friend’s girlfriend.
“You’re Y/N?” he said.
“That’s me. Has Tabito mentioned my name or something?” you said. When he realized you weren’t going to rat him out, Otoya relaxed and pretended to gag.
“All of the time. I thought you were his celebrity crush or idol, the way he talked about you! I couldn’t believe you were real when he waved at you during the game. You were sitting a bit too far away for me to get a good look at you, but you waved back, so I had no choice but to believe him,” he said. You recognized that this was his attempt at an apology, and, finding no merit in anything but acceptance, you shrugged.
“I wasn’t that crazy,” Tabito said.
“I don’t know. Otoya doesn’t seem like the lying type,” you said. Otoya let out a sigh of relief, catching your eye and mouthing thank you when Tabito gave you an irritated look.
“He totally is! Don’t believe a word out of this asshole’s mouth, he’s full of shit!” he said.
“So that must be why you’re friends, then?” you said. Otoya let out a choked laugh, and Tabito gave you such a kicked-puppy look that you could not help but lean over and press a kiss to his cheek. “Just joking. Who else is coming?”
“Well, you already know about Reo, but besides him, Tokimitsu said he’d come, Aryu, and Yuki,” Tabito said, counting off each name on his fingers.
“Yuki? Like Yukimiya? You two are friends now?” you said, already planning double dates with Yukimiya and his girlfriend in your head.
“We were in Blue Lock together. That kind of experience can bond anyone,” Tabito said.
“This guy really hated Yuki at first, though,” Otoya said, jabbing his thumb towards Tabito, who scowled. “So fucking funny. Yuki would just be standing there, and he’d go crazy, talking about how ‘one centimeter isn’t a big deal’ and how Yuki was ‘just an average, mediocre guy.’”
“You can stop talking now,” Tabito said.
“But all’s well that ends well, right? Now Yuki and Karasu are great pals. He never did explain what his problem was at the start, however. I’ve always wondered,” Otoya said, in a tone that clearly suggested he was fishing for an elaboration from you.
“I can’t believe you’re telling on me! And to my girlfriend of all people!” Tabito said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Why does Tabito not like Yuki? It’s a funny story, really,” you began.
“One we do not need to go over,” Tabito said. Now that the misunderstanding was well beyond cleared up, that fight right before you two had gotten together was a point of great embarrassment for Tabito, who still could not quite believe that he had behaved so irrationally.
“What don’t we need to go over?” It was another newcomer, but one who you knew — Yukimiya himself, who beamed when he saw you. “Oh, Y/N! Karasu mentioned you were going to be here, but to be quite frank with you, I sort of forgot. How have you been?”
“Can’t complain. What about you?” you said. “Great job in the game against the U-20s, by the way.”
“Thanks!” he said, sitting down across from you. “I’m in the same boat. It’s nice to be on a break. I actually slept in for the first time in forever, and I got to use my own skin products instead of the crap Blue Lock gave us.”
“I’m happy for you,” you said. “You all deserve a break. It’s obvious you’ve been working really hard.”
“Pardon, madam!” You hardly had the time to react before a spindly man with flowing black hair and dark, painted fingernails was crouching beside you. “I’m sorry if I’m overstepping, but I just — I have to acknowledge glam when it’s so obviously in front of me.”
“What?” you said.
“Here he goes,” Otoya said, steepling his fingers in anticipation.
“It’s just…I was aware that Karasu was bringing his girlfriend and her best friend to this little meeting of ours, but I didn’t know that one of you would turn out to be the most glam individual I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in ages! Please, tell me you’re the best friend,” he said.
“She’s the girlfriend, Aryu, so leave her alone,” Tabito said. Aryu pressed the back of his hand against his forehead.
“In another life, my dear,” he said, fluttering his fingers at you.
“No?” Tabito said. “In no other life! She’s mine in every one, so piss off!”
“Uh, thanks for the compliment. It’s nice to meet you, Aryu,” you said awkwardly. Otoya and Yukimiya did nothing to dissipate the tension, both of them exchanging looks and giggling.
“Sorry about him,” a stocky boy with huge, panicked eyes said, taking the chair beside where Aryu was still muttering to himself about a ‘grand love affair’ that would ‘shock the world with its glam potential.’ “You’re the girl from the edits, aren’t you? Y/N L/N? I’m Tokimitsu.”
“How do you know her full, official, government name?” Tabito said, arching his eyebrows. Tokimitsu shook his head so rapidly you thought his neck might snap or something from the speed of it.
“No, no, it’s not like that, Karasu! She’s just famous at the moment!” he said.
Tabito’s eyes flicked towards you for confirmation. You rubbed the back of your neck, beginning to explain for the benefit of the entire table.
“Right when Nagi scored, the three of us — my best friend, Chigiri, and I — were the only ones cheering, so the cameras focused on us,” you said. “After that, they would periodically show us throughout the match, and people have been making edits of those clips. At first, we were just the unnamed Blue Lock fans, but I think I liked one too many comments calling me hot, because now everyone knows who we all are…”
“Some of the edits are really good,” Tokimitsu agreed. “They’re all over my dashboard. People have even started shipping you guys with the players! Right now, the most popular pairings are you with Karasu—”
“Good,” Tabito said, sticking his nose in the air. You pinched him on the bicep, finding his uncharacteristic possessiveness as endearing as it was unnecessary.
“—and your best friend with Otoya,” Tokimitsu continued.
“Huh?” Otoya said.
“The clip of her giving you the middle finger right before halftime is super popular,” Tokimitsu said. “People have actually taken screenshots and made matching profile pictures. It’s a whole movement.”
“Huh?” Otoya said. “How am I supposed to flirt with girls if everyone thinks I’m taken by some psycho who hates me for no reason? Where can I file a complaint? This needs to be stopped at once!”
“It’s not for no reason, exactly,” you said.
“There’s a legitimate explanation?” Tabito said.
“Legitimate is a stretch, but there is an explanation,” you said. “You know her. She wouldn’t hate someone without having at least some kind of logic to it.”
A shiny black limousine pulled up in front of the cafe, and the back doors opened to reveal Reo Mikage, who stepped out and thanked the driver before walking over to join the rest of you. You were about to tell him to take the seat in between Tabito and your best friend, but then you realized that there was a massive problem: somebody was already sitting there. Namely, Otoya, who was busily swiping through his phone and reporting every account that he came across which had either him or your best friend as a profile picture.
“My apologies for the tardiness,” Reo said. His mere voice had a particular cadence to it that spoke to his wealth and upbringing, and down to the slightest, his mannerisms were genteel and refined. “I had to sneak out from a meeting to come here.”
“Sneaking out from a meeting to come to another meeting? You’re a busy guy, Reo!” Aryu said, evidently completely over his earlier heartbreak. “What a glam schedule.”
“That’s not the word I’d use for it,” Reo said, running a hand through his hair, which fell loosely around his face now that he wasn’t playing soccer. “Anyways, I hope I didn’t keep you all waiting for too long.”
“No, we haven’t gotten started yet,” Tabito said.
“We’ve been discussing the edits people made of Y/N and her friends!” Tokimitsu said. Reo looked over at you and smiled politely.
“I’ve seen a few of them. It’s an impressive marketing strategy on the JFU’s part — by sprinkling in clips of you three, they managed to appeal to a broader audience. Now, people who ordinarily never would have watched the game are watching reruns, therefore increasing their revenue tenfold,” he said, offering you his hand to shake. “I’m Reo Mikage.”
“Y/N L/N,” you said, taking it as professionally as you could, all the while wondering what was holding your best friend up. She ought to be here as soon as possible, or else she really might lose her chance.
Like she had read your mind, the glass door of the cafe swung open, and your best friend strolled out, two plastic cups balanced in one hand and two scones in a napkin held in the other.
“Sorry I took so long,” she said, thankfully oblivious to the members of the meeting you were crashing. “The barista got confused and made my drink iced. I told her it wasn’t a big deal, but she insisted on dumping it and remaking it properly, free of charge. Apparently, she’s new or something, so she’s still in that phase where she isn’t entirely jaded by the public yet.”
“It’s okay,” you said. “Tabito. Grab my drink before she—!”
“You!” your best friend said, pointing at Otoya, who groaned in defeat and buried his face in his hands. Your drink slipped from her hands and clattered to the ground, spilling out onto the concrete, though she took no notice of it, putting the rest of the goods on the table and glaring at Otoya.
“My drink,” you said mournfully.
“I’ll go get you a new one,” Tabito said, making like he was going to stand. You grabbed onto his arm and shook your head.
“No, don’t leave me here,” you said.
“What? Why not?” he said. You pointed at the infamous duo, both of whom looked about ready to blow up, and then you looped your arms around his neck, peeking over his shoulder at the pair.
“If they get in a fight, I’ll be stuck in the crossfire,” you said. “You have to stay here and defend me if it comes to that. Quick, take the scones while she’s distracted. I’m going to eat them as payback for her dropping my drink.”
He did as you commanded. “Here you go.”
“Thank you,” you said.
“You owe me ten dollars!” your best friend said.
“What? No, I don’t. We’ve never even met, so why would I owe you any money at all?” Otoya said. “Wait. We haven’t met, right? Or did we go on a date at some point? If so, I’m sorry that it didn’t work out, but you have to understand that things just end up like that sometimes. I’m not going to compensate you for that.”
“Jeez, Otoya,” Yukimiya said with a chuckle. “You’re kind of horrible, man. How many dates have you been on, if you don’t even remember whether you were with her at some point?”
“Do you really want the answer to that?” Otoya said. Yukimiya made a face.
“You were definitely on a date,” your best friend said. “I wasn’t, though. In fact, I was just innocently trying to watch a movie with my cousins, when somebody decided that they would just go ahead and make out with their date, right in front of my face, for the entire one hour and forty-seven minutes of the film!”
“Who’s somebody?” Tokimitsu whispered.
“Probably Otoya,” Aryu whispered back.
“Oh, I do remember you!” Otoya said, snapping his fingers. “You came and yelled at me after the movie, too, right? That was funny.”
“Okay, guys, how about we all relax and get to the point of this meeting instead of squabbling over past grievances?” Reo interrupted before the argument could grow anymore heated. Satisfied that things were now under control, you ceased your cowering behind Tabito, though you did make sure to shove the last of the scones in your mouth before your best friend could ask where they had disappeared to.
“Fine by me,” Otoya said when your best friend did not respond. “Yo, you gonna sit down or what?”
“You guys can have your meeting without us, since I’m quite sure it’s not anything that we’ll be able to meaningfully contribute to. In the meantime, she and I will go and get a replacement drink for me,” you said.
As soon as the two of you were inside and out of earshot of the boys, she let out a wail. “I completely made an awful first impression on Reo Mikage!”
“I can’t lie, you definitely did,” you said. “But at least it was entertaining for the rest of us. Cheer up! There’s still Barou, Nagi, and Isagi, right? You have an entire list for a reason. Reo might be a wash, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up entirely.”
“You’re right, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. If only that lettuce-headed Otoya weren’t here! Things would’ve gone perfectly, but ruining my life must be a particular hobby of his,” she said.
“You might be better off if you pretend he’s not around,” you said. “How about this? We’ll get Tabito to set you up on a date with one of the others on your roster, and I’ll personally ensure that Otoya stays far, far away.”
“Thanks,” she said. “Here, I’ll pay for your drink, since I spilled it the first time.”
“Yeah, I was going to make you do that even if you didn’t offer.”
Upon your return outside, drinks and additional scones in hand, you were met with a larger group than you had left. Even more of the Blue Lock boys had appeared, and all of them were talking animatedly with one another.
“You’re Hyoma!” you said, taking a sip from your still-hot beverage, waving at your new friend’s little brother. “I sat with your sister at the game.”
“She’s mentioned you a couple of times. Said you thought I did well in the game,” Chigiri said, scratching the bridge of his nose shyly. “I really appreciate it. You’re Karasu’s girlfriend, right?”
“Yes! Thank you for knowing that!” Tabito said, snatching your drink from you and taking a swig, bursting into a coughing fit as it scalded his throat.
“That’s what you get,” you said, taking your drink back, blowing on it to cool it before taking the tiniest sip. “Alright, I know Isagi and Chigiri, but who’s the third one?”
“That’s Bachira,” Tabito said. “He’s a fascinating guy.”
“You know what we should do? Since all of us are together for the first time outside of Blue Lock, we should hang out!” Bachira said, rocking on his heels.
“That’s good with me. Our meeting ended up not being that productive,” Yukimiya said.
“Mostly due to certain individuals,” Reo agreed, looking pointedly at Otoya.
“Me? Blame her!” Otoya said, pointing at your best friend, who was busy exchanging hair care tips with Aryu instead of putting the moves on Isagi, as you thought she might’ve.
“Reo’s too much of a glam gentleman to blame a lady for anything,” Aryu said.
“What he said,” Reo agreed. “Though, again, I wouldn’t put it like that.”
“Where should we go?” Tokimitsu said. “I’m okay with anything.”
“Wait, what about Nagi? Isn’t he with you guys?” Reo said to Isagi, who hummed.
“He was supposed to meet up with us, but he overslept, and then he saw an arcade on the way, so he stopped in there,” Isagi said.
“Reo, I bet you have Nagi’s location on your phone at all times, right?” Bachira said. Reo nodded. “Then I say we use that to go and find him!”
“An arcade day does sound like a blast,” Yukimiya said.
“Thanks for the invite, but I think I’m going to stay back and spend the day with Y/N,” Tabito said.
“She can come, too!” Bachira said. “On one condition: she has to be my partner for rhyming ping-pong.”
“That’s a fair deal in my books,” you said. Ordinarily, you would have agreed with Tabito — a calm date with him was far more appealing than the prospect of going to an arcade with a bunch of soccer players — but above all else, you were a loyal friend, and you could hardly abandon your best friend when Reo, Nagi, and Isagi would all be present at this gathering.
“Are you sure? You don’t have to feel bad for me. I don’t mind missing out on hanging with these idiots. I see enough of them in Blue Lock as it is,” Tabito said.
“I’m offended,” Otoya said dryly. “What happened to bros before hoes?”
“Considering she’s his girlfriend and he’s liked her for going on six years now, I’d say she’s probably a bit more than a ‘hoe,’” Yukimiya said.
“I don’t feel bad for you, Tabito, so you can put that out of your mind. I haven’t gone to an arcade or played rhyming ping-pong in ages. It’ll be fun, I think,” you said, kicking him under the table and angling your chin towards Reo and Isagi ever-so-slightly. His mouth formed an ‘o’ in realization.
“Then I guess we’re off to the arcade,” he said. “Lead the way, Reo.”
“Follow me,” Reo said, holding up his phone, which displayed the elusive Nagi’s location on the screen.
You all must’ve appeared an odd group to any onlookers, but that didn’t stop any of you from enjoying yourselves as you weaved through the streets of Shibuya. You walked with Tabito, your hand intertwined with his like usual, both of you pointing out window displays you found appealing or ridiculous. Chigiri and Bachira hotly debated which arcade games were the best, Isagi doing his best to mediate while Otoya egged both of them on in turn. Reo and Yukimiya continued their discussion on the economics of Blue Lock from the earlier meeting, and Aryu described every single step he took in the shower to your best friend and Tokimitsu, both of whom were enthralled by the topic. All in all, it was a blend which should not have worked but somehow did, and more than simply working, it really excelled.
“There you are, pain-in-the-ass gamer prince!” Tabito cackled as everyone entered the arcade and saw Nagi sitting at one of the booths, controls in his hands and a small frown on his face as he gunned down his virtual enemies. Letting go of you, Tabito wrestled Nagi into a headlock, messing with his hair as Nagi whined in protest. “You’re going to lose all of your friends, you jerk!”
“Caught red-handed,” Reo said with a sigh. “Classic Nagi.”
“Now that we’ve found him, it’s time to party!” Bachira said, pumping his fist in the air. “Tokimitsu, let’s go play darts!”
“Okay!” Tokimitsu said.
“I’m heading over to the claw machine,” your best friend said. “Wanna come, Y/N?”
“Sure, I’ll cheer you on,” you said. “I’m pretty bad at it myself, so I won’t waste my money on my own attempts.”
Everyone dispersed throughout the arcade. Tabito, Otoya, and Aryu followed you and your best friend towards the claw machine, much to your best friend’s disgust — you were certain that she had been hoping Isagi, Nagi, or Reo would come with you, but all three of them were preoccupied with the darts competition Bachira had set up, leaving her to side-eye Otoya and stick to conversing only with Aryu. For his part, Aryu was happy to oblige her, as sticking close to your best friend had the double effect of cooling Tabito’s ire from earlier as well as alleviating the hostility between her and Otoya.
“This has got to be rigged!” your best friend said when her third attempt at trying to nab a panda plushie proved unsuccessful. On each attempt, right before she was able to drop the plushie into the chute, the claw would give out and it would fall back into the pile, leaving her out of money and patience.
“Move out of the way,” Otoya said. “Let me show you how the masters get it done.”
“You call yourself a claw-machine master?” you said. “What, do you practice or something?”
Otoya entered a token into the machine and shouldered past your fuming best friend, grabbing the controls with casual ease. “Girls love it when you win stuffed animals for them. Check out my flow!”
“I never put you down as someone with this type of functional glam,” Aryu said, pressing his face against the glass of the machine. “I sincerely repent for the underestimation!”
“You really are a master,” you breathed, doing the same, watching in astonishment as Otoya expertly maneuvered the plushie towards the chute.
“Stop shaking the machine, idiots, you’ll make him mess up,” Tabito said, pulling you and Aryu away from the glass by the back of your collars and holding you there until Otoya had retrieved his prize.
“Bam,” Otoya said, tossing the panda at your best friend. “Ninja skills.”
It hit her in the face and fell to the ground; with a withering glare, she stooped over and tucked it under her arm before stomping away.
“You better not find yourself anywhere near the dartboards! I’m warning you, I have a bad aim, so look out!” she threatened before disappearing, presumably to join in on Bachira’s tournament.
“Isn’t that just a self-insult?” Otoya said. “Sucking at darts is even worse than sucking at the claw machine, don’t you think?”
“She means she’ll hit you with the dart and you can’t blame her for it because she warned you, you dunce,” Tabito said, face-palming. “Come on, Y/N, let’s go see how the tournament’s going.”
The tournament seemed to have split into two sections. On the right side, Reo, Tokimitsu, Yukimiya, and your best friend were tossing darts at the board with precision and care, tallying up their scores and congratulating one another after each round. On the left, Nagi was standing in front of the board with his arms spread and his back to Bachira, Isagi, and Chigiri, who were gleefully taking turns throwing darts in his direction, talking about how this was his ‘punishment’ for standing them up.
“Who’s winning?” you said, right as Bachira sent a dart shooting towards the back of Nagi’s head. Nagi exhaled heavily.
“Sorry,” he repeated for the thousandth time.
“Do you think it’s even possible for someone to win in a game like that?” Tabito said. “Better to ask those guys.”
“I think Yuki is up right now,” Reo said in response to your unasked question. “Although Tokimitsu’s catching up. It’s super close. Could be anyone’s game.”
“Now that you’re here, Y/N, let’s go play rhyming ping-pong!” Bachira said.
“Who will we play against, though?” you said.
“Nagi, for one,” Bachira said.
“I don’t want to,” Nagi said. Bachira raised another dart, causing Nagi’s sleepy frown to deepen. “Okay, I will.”
“Then Tabito can be your teammate,” you said.
“You’re challenging me?” Tabito said. “You’re going to regret that. Prepare to lose.”
“Bachira and I won’t let you get even a point, right, Bachira?” you said.
“That’s right!” Bachira said, high-fiving you and charging forwards as the entire group headed over to the ping-pong table. Picking out four paddles from the rack, he handed one each to you, Tabito, and Nagi, keeping the last for himself and joining you on your side of the table.
“If we beat you, then you have to take me to the aquarium for our next date!” you said, brandishing your paddle at Tabito.
“Fine, but if we beat you, then you have to join me during my workouts for the rest of the break!” he said, tossing the ball up and down in the air.
“We have to crush them,” you said to Bachira. “If I have to workout with him, I’ll probably die.”
“Got it,” Bachira said, rolling his shoulders. “Ready when you are.”
“Nagi, get your head in the game,” Tabito said to his reluctant partner. “We need to win this. The aquarium is so creepy and unromantic! What kind of first date back from Blue Lock would that be? I need your talents, prodigy.”
“Okay,” Nagi said. “Are we starting?”
“Yeah, you can serve. Do you know how to play?” Tabito said.
“Not really,” he said.
“Whenever you hit the ball, you have to say a word that the other team can rhyme to, and when they return the serve, they have to come up with that rhyme and say it,” Bachira said. “Pretty easy, right?”
“It’ll be a simple win,” you said. “I’m first in the class for Modern Literature, so I know a lot of words.”
“Don’t underestimate Nagi,” Reo said. “He may look like little more than a typical idiot slacker, but he actually came second in our year without studying at all.”
“I’m so torn,” your best friend said. “Who do I root for?”
“Why’s it a question? Wouldn’t you want to root for your best friend?” Chigiri said.
“You wouldn’t get it,” she said.
“Hmph,” Chigiri said. “Whatever.”
“Okay, are both sides ready?” Yukimiya said. He had been chosen to referee, mostly because he was the most impartial. All of you nodded, and he whistled. “Rhyming ping-pong, begin! Your serve, Nagi!”
“Um,” Nagi said, tossing the ball in the air and tapping it with his paddle. “Orange?”
Yukimiya whistled again. “Out! Y/N and Bachira are the winners!”
“What was that?” Tabito screeched.
“He must’ve gotten nervous in the face of Bachira and I’s combined prowess,” you said, tossing your hair.
“Not really. I just didn’t wanna play,” Nagi said. “There’s some good aquariums in Tokyo, Karasu. You can probably have a fun date there.”
“You’re the worst,” Tabito said. “I’m taking Chigiri next time. I bet he wouldn’t have picked orange as his first word!”
“I would’ve gone with bat,” Chigiri said.
“Ooh, and then I would’ve said cat!” you said. Bachira had vanished alongside Isagi and Reo, giving some excuse about karaoke before running out the door after them, leaving you standing alone across from the furious Tabito and lethargic Nagi.
“Maybe we should’ve teamed up,” Chigiri said to you. You winked and gave him a thumbs-up in assent.
“Can we go see what Reo and the others are doing?” Nagi said, limp in another one of Tabito’s headlocks, completely unbothered by the vulnerable position that he was being held in.
“Bachira said they were going for karaoke,” you said. “Maybe we should find Otoya and Aryu before joining them, though.”
“How about just Aryu?” your best friend suggested, though her ideas went unheard.
“I’ll text them,” Yukimiya said.
“No need,” Otoya said, peeking his head into the door. “We’ve been looking for you guys for a while.”
“Such unglam conduct, disappearing like that,” Aryu said in disappointment.
“Sorry!” Tokimitsu yelped.
“Since we’re all here now, we should be good to head to karaoke,” Yukimiya said.
“Karasu and I are going to do a duet,” Otoya informed everyone as you all followed the signs for the karaoke section of the building.
“Hell yeah,” Tabito snickered. “We’ll knock everyone’s socks off. They’re not ready.”
“What song?” Tokimitsu said.
“Something with a lot of belting,” Otoya said.
“Please don’t,” your best friend said. “I didn’t bring ear plugs, and I do value my hearing.”
“Wait a second,” you said. “Hey, Tabito, Yukimiya — isn’t that Aiku from the U-20 squad?”
“Huh?” Tabito said.
“It is!” Yukimiya said. “He’s talking to Reo, Isagi, and Bachira, too. That’s unexpected.”
“Looks like the whole gang’s here, in fact,” Tabito said, cracking his knuckles and motioning towards the rest of the U-20 squad, who were glowering at the boys beside you as they approached.
“A fight?” Nagi said.
“Could be,” Otoya said, striking a ninja-pose that caused your best friend to dissolve into a fit of laughter, which he ignored completely. “I’m stoked.”
“Need backup, Isagi?” Yukimiya said, his hands in his pockets and a genial smile on his face. “We’ve got you.”
“Ah, but don’t expect anything from me!” you said, flashing them all a peace sign. “I’ll cheer for you from the corner, though.”
“A girl? Hello—” Aiku began, though he was immediately interrupted by Tabito.
“Nope, don’t even think about it,” he said.
“Can’t blame a guy for trying,” Aiku said.
“What are you all doing here?” one of the U-20 boys, whose name you couldn’t recall, said.
“Likely the same thing as you,” Chigiri said.
“But in a more glam way, naturally,” Aryu added.
“The fuck? Don’t think I won’t mess you up, freak!” the U-20 player said.
“Freak?” Aryu said. “Say that again, I dare you!”
“How about we settle this over a game of bowling?” Aiku suggested. “That way, none of us get in trouble with our coaches for accidentally injuring ourselves.”
“Fine by us,” Yukimiya said. “We’ll beat you either way.”
“I’d prefer it if I didn’t have to watch you all pummel each other,” you agreed.
“Same,” your best friend said. “Though I wouldn’t mind too much if you roughed Otoya up a bit…”
“Hey!” the boy in question said.
“The ladies have spoken,” Aiku said. “Bowling it is!”
“Are you going to play?” Tabito asked you as you all trekked towards the bowling alley.
“Nah, this is a feud between Blue Lock and the U-20 players. I’m just an onlooker,” you said.
“Aw, but you’re the bowling champion! We’d win for sure if we had you on our side,” he said. Going bowling had been a common event for both of your friend groups all throughout high school, so he had been privy to many a round in which you absolutely annihilated everyone else, demolishing him and his friends and yours alike with a careful, needle-like precision.
“You’re not half-bad yourself. Plus, who knows how good the others are? It’ll be alright. Go beat those U-20 boys again, and then let’s get out of here,” you said.
“Just us? Or do you mean everyone?” he said.
“Just us,” you said. “I’ve been downright helpful all day, so no one can begrudge me for being a little bit selfish and sneaking off with you. I’ll only do it if you win, though.”
That was a lie, but Tabito was the type who performed better under pressure. The thought that he might miss out on a date with you — especially one not at the aquarium — would be more than enough to drive him to bowling success.
“Y/N!” your best friend hissed to you as Tabito and the others went to check in at the counter. “Check it out! It’s Shoei Barou!”
“He’s bowling all by himself? Huh, that’s a little startling. The more you know, I guess,” you said. Privately, you had believed the intimidating Barou would have had similarly intimidating habits, like powerlifting, or beating up thugs in alleyways, or activities more along those lines, but of course, everyone had layers, so maybe you shouldn’t have assumed.
“It’s kind of cute, if I’m being honest,” she said. “Like, oh my gosh, you’re a friendless loner! I need you so badly.”
“There’s a lid for every pot,” you said, not at all seeing the appeal in that kind of person but having decided long ago that you were more glad than anything that you and she didn’t have the same taste in men — you had likely avoided many awkward situations in that way. “Well, what’s your plan? You’ve got Reo, Barou, Nagi, and Isagi all in one room. Who’re you going to go for?”
“Let’s weigh the pros and cons. That should help us come to a proper conclusion,” she said.
“Got it. Cons: Reo finds you super immature for fighting with Otoya, Nagi doesn’t seem to care about you one way or another, Isagi is much more interested in hanging out with Bachira and Chigiri than trying to talk to you, and you haven’t even met Barou yet,” you said. She gulped.
“And, uh, the pros?” she said. You frowned.
“Uh…at least Nagi’s opinion of you isn’t bad?” you said. “And you haven’t had the chance to make a terrible impression on Barou yet.”
“That’s it?” she said.
“Sorry,” you said. “But kind of. It’s not looking good.”
“What do I do, then?” she said. “Is it time for me to give up on my dreams? Am I destined to be single forever? Will the closest I get to a wedding be in the form of attending yours as a bridesmaid?”
“Don’t be pessimistic,” you said. “There’s always Aiku. He seems like he’d take anything on legs for a date or two.”
In unison, you glanced over at Aiku. He, and Otoya for that matter, were talking to a pair of girls, who were hooked on their every word, irises sparkling as they listened to both boys flirt. You and your best friend exchanged looks.
“I’d rather die alone,” she said.
“That kind of relationship wouldn’t last,” you affirmed. “Don’t worry. I’ll ask Tabito if he can introduce you to Barou. He’s likely your best bet at this point.”
“You might be right about that,” she said, following after you as you made your way towards where the ones not actively bowling were hanging out.
This, unfortunately, was a fatal mistake. The route took you past Otoya and Aiku, and, more importantly, the girls they were chatting with. One of them happened to catch a glimpse of you both, and she immediately gasped, shoving past Otoya to tap the two of you on our shoulders.
“You’re the girls from the edits!” she said. You winced at the murderous expressions on Aiku’s and Otoya’s faces.
“Yeah, we are,” you said.
“No way!” the other girl said to your best friend. “You and your boyfriend are my sister and her boyfriend’s profile pictures!”
“Boyfriend?” your best friend said. “I’m single, though?”
“The guy you gave the middle finger to at the Blue Lock vs U-20 match! Aren’t you two dating?” she said.
“No!” your best friend and Otoya said at the same time.
“Wait, I didn’t recognize you because of the hat, but you’re the confused player that she flipped off!” the girl said to Otoya. “Can we get a picture of the two of you together? We’re guaranteed to go viral if we can post something like that!”
“Oh, boy,” you said. “Aiku, you seem like a nice guy, so I’m going to advise you to run right about now.”
“What?” he said.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” you said, darting off before you were caught up in the fallout that would accompany the request, not slowing your pace until you were safely over by Tabito and the rest, far away from the brewing situation.
“I think we’re going to do it!” Tabito said when he saw that you were once again at his side. “As long as Nagi is more motivated to bowl than he was to play rhyming ping-pong.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever, that’s great,” you said. “Let’s go.”
“Right now?” he said.
“Right now,” you said.
“Did something happen?” he said.
“This bowling alley is about to turn into a war zone,” you said, gesturing over to where Otoya and your best friend were standing stiffly beside one another, the girl angling her phone to take as many photos of them as possible.
“Uh-oh,” he said. “See you guys later!”
“What? You’re already leaving?” Chigiri said.
“Yup, it was great to meet you all! Good luck in Blue Lock. Hope to see you again!” you said, sprinting towards the doors with Tabito, ducking out right as your best friend went off on a tirade about how Otoya needed to stay a ‘minimum of two bodies’ away from her at all times lest he ‘infect her with the green hair disease.’ “Phew.”
“We made it,” Tabito said. “Now what?”
“Now we do whatever we want,” you said, reaching up and kissing him softly. “No more worrying about everyone else. Let’s do something for just the two of us.”
“Finally,” he said, wrapping an arm around your shoulders as you left the arcade behind. “I’ve been missing you for so long, and when I finally got you back, I had to share you with all of my dumbass teammates. Not fair.”
“I’m sorry,” you said. “It’s like Otoya said — bros before hoes.”
“Otoya’s a jackass,” he said.
“True,” you said. “But enough about him. I want to hear about everything you did in Blue Lock, so that when you have to go back, I can imagine what you might be up to at any given moment and feel a little better.”
“Gross,” he said.
“You act as though you hate it, but I knew deep down you like it,” you said. He wrinkled his nose, though it did little to hide his prominent blush.
“Nah,” he said, drawing you impossibly closer to his side, as much to be affectionate as to prevent you from further exposure to the redness of his face. “I just like you.”
“Oh?” you said. “That’s good, because I like you, too.”
“I already knew that,” he said.
“Never mind,” you said. “If that’s the case, then I hate you.”
“No, you don’t,” he said. You smiled, playing with his fingers as the two of you walked around the city with no destination in mind, no end goal but to enjoy each other’s company.
“No, I don’t.”

Fake
Jake x GN!Reader ENHYPEN
Summary: When walking home from the library someone is following you, you call the first person that comes to mind, your fake boyfriend.
Word Count: 2.0k
Warnings: Someone's following reader, fake dating, stress, simping, rain, mentions of fear, and idk what else.
A/N: Am i writing this over this tiktok, yes. Do I also not like this, yes.
Your life felt like a movie, like a romcom with a surprisingly not that cheap budget.
Sure, it has been a bit too boring for the past few years as you were focused on your grades more than your social life, besides going out of your friends you never did anything far too exciting.
It was almost embarassing that one of the most exciting things you've done in your last three years of college was that one time in your sophomore year where you ran from the guards because you were in the library after closing hours and had to snuck out.
No. It was really embarassing.
At least, you could say your life has not been boring ever since your senior year started, ever since you met him.
Sim Jake.
One of the most outstanding members of the schools' soccer team, almost everyone that knew him were fully rooting for him to be casted in some first division team soon. And, almost every student in your major were too, as he himself was studying your major.
You two have never really exchanged more than a good morning or good luck when seeing each other in the hallways of your faculty, you could've sworn he probably didn't even can recall your name clarily. But you also could've had sworn you would graduate without interacting with him.
You were at least 95% sure about it.
That is, until you were asked by him to tutor him in accountability and finances, a subject he need to nail in order to be graduate with a good score and go to the team he has been receiving calls from, and, for better or for worse, a subject you were amazing at.
Somehow, and you didn't knew exactly when or where, you ended up in a fake dating deal with him.
He needed a tutor.
You needed some excitement.
He was single and in need of forgeting about his ex.
You were bored and didn't mind a 'boyfriend'.
It was perfect!
You thought it was the most bizarre and stupid idea you could think of, and it has been nothing but fun for the last couple of months the deal has been on, you 'felt like you've found a great friend in jake.
But as everything even barely good you had, you ruined it, and you realized it when the smiles he gave you everytime you met to hang out started to give life to something in your belly. When the glances you shot him became subtler, as if not meant to be done. When your eyes started lingering for longer seconds each time he drove you places, admiring the sharp silhouette of his nose and his jawline, the way his eyelashes brushed ever so slightly his cheeks each time he blinked.
You heart got warmer and warmer each time you even dared to look at him, until the heat on your cheeks was no longer ignorable.
You fell for you fake boyfriend.
You fell hard for Jake.
And you were so scared about it.
Your now friendship that blossomed between the two of you and the rest of his teammates, was far too precious for you to ruin it with what you felt, ignoring all the flirty glances and gestures from him. You couldn't even bear the thought of losing your friendship with Heeseung and Niki, with whom you gossiped during training, nor Sunghoon, Jay and Sunghoon who received you with food when you visited his shared apartment; you couldn't bear to lose him.
You had to unfall, ASAP.
Today, almost seven months after staring this messy deal between the two of you, you were decided of getting over this little crush of yours.
The night was really cold, one of jake's forgotten hoodies drapped over your shoulders as you walked to your apartment from the school library, having just finished a project due to monday, your work pal going home for the weekend, forcing you to finale it today. You even had to tell Jake you couldn't hang out with him at his apartment with his roomates to work on it.
The wind was brushing against your face, hair flying everywhere as you adjusted the strap of your bag on your shoulder.
Out of instinct you looked behind you, hoping to find nothing as usual and keep on walking home, but rather got unpleasently surprised to find a man alone all dark clothed walking at most 10 meters behind you.
Maybe he lives nearby. You thought, walking a tiny bit quicker.
But much to your desmay, two turns to the right and one to the left he was now at least 8 meters from you, each time you walked faster he did so too.
You were fucking frightened by now.
Pulling your phone out, you quickly called the first person that came into mind, fingers moving on their own as they typed, in a mere second the ringing was already by your ear.
"Hey." Jake said at the other side of the line, the faint sound of the TV at the background accompained by Heeseung's screams would usually give you a homey feeling, but not today.
"Jake, someone's following me, i'm scared" you muttered rather silently, keeping on with your fast walk, at least 10 minutes more until you got to your place.
"What? Where are you?" He asked, shuffling sounding around, sudden silence in the room. "Send me your live location, I'm going to get you."
"Okay, I- I will." You didn't dare not to do as he said, the amount of time you've heard him this serious could be counted with your fingers, but it someway reassured you.
In less than 5 minutes the sound of a so familiar motor was heard from the end of the block, parking with a scfreching sound right beside you as Jake hopped out of Jay's car, a bee like line traced in his mind all the way to you.
As soon as you were within arm reach he engulfed you in a hug, his arms around your shoulders as he breathed you in, reassuring himself. "Are you okay? Are you hurt? Do we have to beat someone?" He said as soon as he pulled away, hands now craddling your face with so much care it would've made you melt if it wasnt for the adrenaline running in your veins.
"I'm okay." you whispered, now ashamed as you realized Heeseung, Jay and Sunghoon were in the car too.
"You sure sweetheart?" His question definetly was not doubting you, he was doubting himself, wanting to be completely sure of was he had heard. After your nod, he stared over your shoulder to find noone there as he toon you by the hand. "Let's get you home."
Its was almost ridiculous how quick the silent drive to your apartment complex was, your hand subconciously drawing figures on Jake's trying to calm yourself down from the scare.
The fact that Jake walked you to the door didn't help stop the slowly rising stampede running through you. "I know its too much but... can't you stay?" You asked, not daring to look up to him as you did so, his hands still in yours. "Yunjin isn't home until tomorrow... But you don't have to if you dont want to."
"If you want me to I will." He deadpans, voice so determined that made you look up, his eyes already on you and oh so warm, you doubted seriously what thoughts crossed his mind to make him look like that. "Only if you want me to stay."
"I do." You nod, looking at him as he went to say somthing to the guys, his hands waving goodbye to you as Jay yelled goodnight and drove away. The fumbling of your hand searching your keys being the only thing interrupting the silence between you.
As you walked throught the hallway all the way up to your apartment a comfortable air fell within you, his hand aching to hold yours again, your mind instead focusing on not make a fool out of you at the time of placing your key in the keyhole in the darkness of the hall.
And thanks to someone above, you didn't, easily opening and closing the door behind you two, words falling in a ramble as soon as you licked the lights on. "I know this isn't what we agreed to but..."
"What are you talking about?" He asks, confusion written all over his furrowed eyebrows and pursed lips.
"I'm sorry for making you come, I panicked and should've called the cops, I'm also sorry for overstepping the li..."
"Y/N, what are you apologizing for?"
"I overstepped the lines of our agreement, this is fake after all, I shouldn't-"
"Is this still fake to you?" The hurt his voice held made something drop in your stomach, sinking it so far down you could swear is now below the floor.
"W-what?" Your voice was thin, eyes wide as he walked closer to you, one of his hands snaking around your waist without ever moving his gaze from you.
"Is this fake?" He reiterates, his other hand holding yours to place it above where his heart is. "Does the fear I felt at the mere thought of someone hurting you, feels fake?" He starts, eyes so sincere you felt like they were drowning you. "Does the way my heart races as I look at you so close in front of me, feels fake?" He keeps on going, heart beting almost worryingly against your ribcage. " If the roles were reversed, and i was the one hurt, how would you feel?"
"I'd be petrified..." You mutter, unabke to look away from him.
"And its real. See? This..." he says, fingers signaling between him and you. "Us. We are not fake anymore, at least not to me."
"Jake."
"Is this real to you too?"
"Jake..."
"If its not, i can walk out that door and pretend this talk never happened, but if it is, know I'm never leaving now."
"It is."
"Then let me kiss you, for real this time." His voice every second became softer, sweeter, barely above a mutter at the end of the sentence, lips gently falling over yours as he kissed you with so much emotion you felt like melting against him.
"Let me date you, as a real couple this time." He whispers as you broke apart, forehead resting gently on yours, his eyes still closed as his breath calmed itself, mind still running over the fact this was all indeed not a dream. "Let me be yours."
"I was so scared of falling for you..." You whisper against his lips, hands traveling up to rest in his chest. "I was scared of losing you, I-"
"You would never lose me, not when you make me feel like the luckiest guy ever to have you around." He smiles, brown eyes looking so intensely into yours.
"I'd have to say I'm luckier, having the Sim Jake falling for me huh." You had to tease, playing with the wrinkles of his shirt.
"Nah, I'm definitely luckier." He smiles stupidly, a zoo storming throught the both of you.
"Whatever floats your boat." You shrugged, pulling away from him.
"Let's go to sleep love." He chuckled at your teasy smile, pulling you by the hand over to your room. "My sweet, lovely partner." He muttered, hugging you as he fell backwards into the mattress, pulling you with him.
"Why does it sound so different now?" You ask between giggles, resting you head over his shoulder just as you did when you fake cuddled in his apartment.
"Because it real to us now." He mumbles against your hair,, a soft kiss on the top of your head following shortly after. "And I've never been happier to be awake."

After She Left | Five
Words: 6k
Preparations for Jackson's first ever prom are well underway, and even Ellie is helping out. As Jackson's only teacher it is, of course, your job to run the show and you'd be more than capable if one parent didn't keep distracting you.
Chapter warnings: Illusions to smut, slow burn, angsty memories of being a teenager, 'She' finally arrives. Minors DNI.
A/N: Ok, second act kicks off after this chapter. You'll get a glimpse of what that means now. Hope you enjoy!
Four | Series Masterlist | Six
Your dreams were changing. Used to waking with a chill, the echoes of loss and the face of your sister blurred in the grey clouds streaking across your dreamscape, you’d started to wake now with a warmth, a vein of light. You felt it on your skin like the first spring day out of a long, cold winter. You’d wake trying to grip its tail as it slipped from you.
The prom thing was your idea, and you only half regretted it. You’d had the idea when Isaiah had asked you what school for you was like, so fascinated by the before times, the kids trying hard to imagine classroom upon classroom filled with students all of the same age. You’d tried to explain that school wasn’t anything, really, that sometimes you didn’t even go because it was so boring, and they gawped at you, disbelieving. You felt a little sliver of shame at having wasted it, reminded yourself that was what you were supposed to do at age 14.
You’d mentioned prom, and there had been a ripple of interest throughout the room.
‘So, there was dancing? But it wasn’t the whole town, it was just you and your friends?’
‘Well, there were teachers and parents as chaperones, but…yeah, there were so many of us that it was just each grade. We got all dressed up, we had our picture taken, we had to choose dates.’
‘You went with a boy?’ Celina piped up from the front row, her nine-year-old face scandalised by the idea that you would willingly expose yourself to boy germs.
‘Yeah, well, some girls had boyfriends in their grade.’
‘Did you have a boyfriend?’ someone asked, the judgement almost silent, and you knew without looking that it was Ellie.
‘No, I didn’t. I had a crush on a boy, but it didn’t really…’
You remembered him, even now, an actual apocalypse not enough to erase the shame. You’d let your friends talk you into a promposal, standing in the bleachers as he ran track with an enormous sign that you’d spent far too many hours painting at your bestie’s kitchen table. It had heart-shaped glitter. You were especially proud of that detail.
You hadn’t realised that the entire track team would also see it, that you would need to specifically point him out in the crowd. Never had you imagined that he would dodge away from your finger, pretending to hide behind another boy, dodging your desire for him while his teammates laughed. It was enough to shrivel your heart into coal. You’re not sure you ever recovered.
You said none of that in your Jackson classroom. Instead, you focused on the decorations, that there was always a theme, that you heard the high school two towns over got Nelly Furtado to play live at theirs, but you weren’t convinced that was any more than an urban legend. They had no idea who Nelly Furtado was. You didn’t try to explain.
‘So can we have one?’ Mika asked, finally looking up from his comic book. You hadn’t thought he was paying attention.
‘A prom? Well, I’d have to talk to the town council.’
‘Tommy’s my uncle, I got an in,’ Ellie said, her face lighting up with the power of being connected, such nepotism so rare as the last vestiges of civilisation withered.
The kids grinned up at you, and you realised that maybe this was something they needed. Jackson already did Christmas, blew eggs, painted them with bees wax and dye from mashed beets and honey, and held a hunt on the first weekend of what the town council’s best guess was April. You could get the kids to decorate with paper flowers. It would be really cute to watch them decorate the mess hall, and there was probably some kind of educational value in it, too.
--
From his post, Joel watched Guillaume and Jonah, his new patrol partner, disappear into the treeline. He watched them, a little nugget of shame festering in the depths of his belly, but mostly – if he allowed himself to admit it – he was happy to have been moved to shifts on the wall. It meant he wasn’t back so late for Ellie, that he could be home to help with her homework or make her help him make dinner, and he didn’t feel so paranoid all the time when he could see the horizon. He didn’t mind the early starts, preferred the quiet up there, liked being able to turn and survey the town as much as the wilds outside it.
If he turned and leaned over a little, up on one foot on the top rung of the ladder, and leaned a little to the right he could make out the path heading up to the schoolhouse. When Billy asked him what he was doing, he explained he wanted to make sure his girl got to school OK. He generally, for the most part, broadly speaking, was referring to Ellie.
Tommy had been nice to enough not to give him shit for it, even after a bloody-nosed Guillaume took it upon himself to point out that Joel was a liability out there. Tommy had appeared on his doorstep the next morning, his brows crowding together, but Joel had spent most of the early morning on the wall, had imagined you lying in bed as he made sure to keep the nastiness away from you, and he was more ready than his little brother expected to hang up his boots.
‘M’getting older, Tommy, we talked about that,’ Joel reminded him, and Tommy nodded.
‘Still the best shot we got, and the best survivalist.’
‘Don’t mean I can’t advise if anyone asks it of me,’ he said. ‘S’not even that hard, just gotta keep your wits about ya.’ He thought for a long moment. ‘Maybe it’s gettin’ harder, now I think about it,’ he conceded.
‘Well, so long as you’re agreeable,’ Tommy said, shuffling awkwardly.
‘What would’ya have done if I wasn’t?’ Joel asked, a crooked grin forming on his face.
‘Would have taken you off patrol, but mighta felt a little bad about it,’ Tommy answered, earnest. Joel scoffed.
‘You’d pull rank, Town Councilman?’
‘Yes’sir, I would,’ Tommy said, no less earnest. Joel nodded at him.
‘Good,’ he affirmed, and saw the way Tommy expanded under the praise of his big brother. ‘You do what’s right for Jackson, always,’ Joel said, and Tommy agreed.
It was cold up there, though, the windchill on his face and his fingertips causing his whole body to tremor in his coat. It was Spring, but it was turning out to be a cold one, not a lot of warmth getting around the mountain. Joel shuffled his feet, trying to get the feeling back in his toes a little. He hadn’t brought his big coat, thinking the sun would be enough to keep him warm, but now that it was nearing the end of the day, the sun disappearing below the mountain ridge, he was counting every minute until he could clamber down and warm up.
He knew you’d be at his place already, working with Ellie at his kitchen table now that the heat had gone out of the day. He was going to try and make his beef stew tonight, had practically begged the kitchen staff to let him have a side of the meat. He hadn’t resorted to violence, but he would have.
He just wanted to thank you for everything you were doing for his daughter. Wanted to nourish your body the way you were nourishing her mind.
Billy called up to him from the bottom of the ladder. ‘Come on down, Joel, night shift’s here.’ Casting one last glance at the treeline, he vaulted down the ladder to rungs at a time.
--
You’d held a democratic process to determine the theme for the prom, but Ellie had dominated it anyway, either unfamiliar with, or just straight up unwilling to, compromise. As the day grew closer you gave up any pretence of tutoring her, working instead on cutting out yellow paper stars at Joel’s kitchen table.
‘Why does the moon change?’ Ellie asked, one day, and you’d paused for a second. You weren’t sure how bad FEDRA school was by the time she was in it, but that seemed fundamental.
‘Well, I mean, you know we’re a planet, right? That we’re like, a big round ball? Floating in the sky?’ Ellie levelled an impatient gaze at you, and you swallowed.
‘Do you think I’m an idiot?’ she asked, and you thought very hard and very fast.
‘I think you’re brilliant and FEDRA school is terrible,’ you said, diplomatically. She softened, her cheeks pinking up a little.
‘Can’t argue with you there,’ she said, quietly.
‘I mean, how much did they teach you about planets?’
‘Sweet fuck all,’ she said, plainly, and you wanted to tell her not to swear but she was in her own house, and it felt like the horse had bolted long ago in any case. ‘But I read about it as much as I can.’
‘The moon?’
‘All space… being that high up where nothing can, no-one up there who can…it’s just so cool. Were you alive when they landed on it?’
‘Ellie, that was the 60s,’ you complained, waiting for her to do the mental maths and wondering how old she thought you were, or if all adults were just ‘old’ to her, a kind of non-descript age in which you are both responsible for everything and also mere moments from shuffling off into death.
She stared at you blankly. ‘I wasn’t born for another like, twenty years,’ you said.
She nodded. ‘Oh.’
‘A lot of people didn’t even believe we really did land on the moon,’ you said. You picked up another piece of paper, your pile of stars nearly double the size of Ellie’s. She wasn’t being careful, her general distractedness was making her slow.
‘What? But wasn’t it on TV?’
‘Yes, it was, but they said it was faked.’ Her eyes blew wide at this, and you realised she was considering it. ‘Ellie, there’s no way it was faked. There are footprints up there that’ll be there forever.’
‘Guess we’ll never know, now,’ she said, quietly, and you suddenly wondered whether the space theme was such a good idea, after all, whether you were tormenting the kids with something they would never see, never have even the smallest chance to explore.’
‘Ellie…’ you said, but she wasn’t looking at you anymore, concentrating hard on her paper star.
‘It’s ok, it’ll be fun to pretend for the night,’ she said. ‘There’s a lot of pretending, won’t be too hard.’
You wanted to ask her what she meant, who she thought was pretending, but you heard heavy footsteps on the front porch and knew Joel was home. You felt your cheeks flush, your hands picking up a little tremble that make it hard to grip your scissors.
‘Hello, ladies,’ Joel said, and when you looked up, he was grinning at you both from the doorway, his hands criss-crossed over his chest as he leant on the frame. It was a domestic enough moment that you had to fight the impulse to go over to him and welcome him properly, into your arms. Ellie barely acknowledged him, because she was 14.
‘What are we making?’ he asked, picking up one of Ellie’s ‘stars’ and genuinely requiring clarification. You winced a little at it. Perhaps it could go towards the back.
‘Prom decorations,’ Ellie said, and she still seemed a little down. You watched her, carefully, trying to determine if she’d already lit her fuse.
‘Oh, I won’t interrupt,’ Joel said, raising his hands, feeling something in the air. ‘You stayin’ to eat, Teach?’ he asked, and he hoped his voice didn’t make him sound too eager, didn’t give him away.
‘I don’t want to be a bother,’ you said, just like you always did.
‘Oh my God!’ Ellie sighed, throwing her star down in front of her and pushing her chair back. ‘Just say yes, you always end up staying anyway.’
‘Ellie!’ Joel barked at her, and she huffed, her shoulders so high they nearly touched her ears.
‘It’s true, you guys do all this polite bullshit and for what? Just say what you want and then you can get it. It’s not so hard.’
You looked over at Joel, who was staring at his likely hormonal teenager with a perplexed look on his face. You took a second to gather yourself.
‘I would love to stay for dinner, Joel, but one of these days I want you to let me cook for you both.’
Joel paused, considering this. Eyes still on Ellie, who was still quietly fuming, he nodded his head, once. ‘I would like that, Teach,’ he said, his careful tone that of every bewildered teenage-girl-Dad the world over. ‘Ellie, I want you to go wash up before dinner, then I want you to peel the carrots.’
She stood up, stomping to the washroom. You concentrated hard on the paper in your hands, hoping it was enough to stifle your smile.
‘I want to know what the fuck that was about,’ Joel said to you, but smiling.
‘I want to remind you there’s nothing worse than being a teenage girl,’ you replied.
--
You stood, wobbling on the end of a step ladder, hanging up the stars. Tommy found some string lights and put them up around the mess hall, and Johnny and his assembly of post-apocalyptic musicians set up in the corner. You and Tommy had already pushed all the tables back against the wall to make a dance floor. As you worked, he regaled you with his favourite memories of his own prom, most of which seemed to involve trying to get up the skirt of someone called Tammy Schmidt. She’d never let him anywhere near her, and you told Tommy to his face she was right to do it.
‘You would have been Tommy and Tammy,’ you said, and he started to giggle. Actually giggle.
‘That was the appeal!’ he said, sheepish. ‘I figured it sounded like those made-up celebrity names.’
‘Brangelina,’ you said, and he grinned.
‘Tomammy,’ he replied, and you rolled your eyes.
After everything was set up you went home to get dressed, pulling out a little black number foraged from the bottom of Maria’s wardrobe. She had complained she was never going to get back into it, and you had waved her off. It made you feel silly and out of place and pretty and ridiculous, and you liked the way it swished when you walked. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d swished anywhere. It felt so normal you weren’t sure you could trust it.
When you arrived back at the mess hall the lights had been dimmed, and Johnny and his band were starting to warm up. With the lights down and the paper streamers and stars you could forget for a moment it wasn’t a normal prom, a real one. You felt a surge of pride in your belly, looked around at the tangible good.
You heard the doors to the mess hall swing open, followed by shrieks and laughter and multiple sets of rapidly advancing feet.
‘Oh my god it’s so amazing!’ Mika said, his face illuminated by the warm glow of the string lights, of the smile stretching his cheeks.
‘This is cool,’ Dina said, quietly, up the back, and you grinned. Something in you, some teenage part of you, was quietly relieved.
More kids arrived, some trailed by their parents, and you busied yourself setting up the orange juice and cola station. The kitchen had done little sandwiches and finger food and you wanted to make sure the kids ate, worried you’d send them home on empty stomachs and sugar pinging through their veins. That their parents would never forgive you, and that they would be right.
As soon as the band started up you stepped back, letting the kids swarm the plates and start to dance. You wanted to join them but you also felt a pull back to the edge of the room, kept thinking you were seeing snatches of your sister in the half-light, of you as a girl. You weren’t sure what the feeling was, some kind of melancholic nostalgia, some kind of longing for something that didn’t make sense to you. You’d never even liked prom that much, had mostly just gone because everyone else was. But it was different seeing one from the other side: from the other side of adolescences, from the other side of the end of the world. It felt precious and sad and joyful, and you weren’t sure if you wanted to turn away from it or bottle it up and store it safe under the bed.
You kept wondering if this was what your 14-year-old self ever envisioned for herself, if she could have envisioned anything so apocalyptic at all.
The doors swung open again, and you exhaled the breath you didn’t realise you were holding when Ellie strode in, almost skipping, her face titled up to the ceiling to see all her decorations hanging in the rafters. ‘Holy shit!’ you heard her exclaim, and you cringed a little, trying to avoid the eyes of the parents. You would have to speak to her about that, eventually.
You turned to pour yourself a juice, the acid tingling at the back of your teeth, before you heard heavy footsteps behind you, even over the thrum of the music and of Ellie grabbing Mika and swinging him around the dancefloor.
‘Hey, Teach,’ Joel said, his baritone rumbling out from his chest. You suppressed a shiver.
‘Joel,’ you turned to him, allowing the surprise to show on your face. ‘What are you doing here?’ You were ignoring that he was standing in black suit pants and a white shirt, unbuttoned at the neck, maybe a size too big, you couldn’t be sure. He’d done his hair, or had made an attempt at it, maybe running water through it and in the humidity of the room it had started to curl. You were alarmed at how distinctly you wanted to lean forward and sink your teeth into his neck, to lave at the skin there, to feel his pulse with your tongue.
You swallowed, the juice catching in your throat and making you splutter. Suddenly Joel was beside you, an enormous warm hand between your shoulder blades as you fought, doubled over, for breath.
‘Easy, easy,’ he was saying, and you wanted to slam your eyes shut and imagine him whispering exactly that as he slid inside you, as he rocked into you and felt your cunt quiver around his length. Jesus Christ, you were going to spontaneously combust.
‘Sorry, went down the wrong hole,’ you said, fluttering your hand in front of your face in the hope it would ward him off somewhat. As you straightened, he let his hand slide down your spine and away just as he reached the small of your back, and you felt your spine arch towards where his touch had been.
Fucks sake, you needed to get it together. You were like some horny teenager at, well, prom.
‘Tommy had something he needed to do at home, something with the baby.’
‘Is he OK? Is Maria Ok?’
‘Yeah, they’re fine, the baby just has a sniffle and I believe Maria’s exact words were “you’re not going out there to watch teenagers marinate in their hormones while I sit at home being snotted on by your crotch fruit”.’
You gaped at him. ‘Maria did not say crotch fruit.’
‘Might have put my spin on that bit,’ Joel said, grinning.
For his part, Joel was watching your eyes so that he wouldn’t look down at your dress, a little black flitty number that came up to your knees and down close enough on your chest that when you leant over trying to get your breath he had to move away to resist the urge to stare at the swell of your breasts, instead coming to stand beside you and placing his hand on your back just to try and keep himself standing. You were so fuckin’ pretty, done your hair all up nice. He wanted to swivel you around, tuck you into his chest and nibble on the nape of your neck, put his nose in your hair and inhale as he flipped that silly little skirt over your rear, letting one hand wonder over your cheeks as he slid further down, cupping and probing, into the slick between your legs.
Christ on a cracker, he needed to get it together. He was behaving like Tommy at, well, prom.
‘Place looks great,’ he said, his voice slightly strangled. You gazed up at him, taking a second to comprehend his words.
‘Thanks, Ellie did amazing work with the stars,’ you said, and you knew he knew you were lying, and you also knew he was a good enough Dad that he was going to let you get away with it.
‘She certainly has her own style,’ Joel replied, eyeing one particularly wonky cutout you had strategically placed in a dark corner.
You turned to watch the kids dance, Ellie’s hair bouncing around her face as she twisted her hips, holding Mika’s hand as she did.
‘She’s really gravitated towards him,’ you commented, and you looked over at Joel just in time to see a cloud pass over his face.
‘He probably reminds her of…’ he said, but then he trailed off, recalibrated. ‘He’s a sweet kid, so it makes sense,’ he finished.
‘Oh, speaking of sweet, Billy loves having you on the wall,’ you said, smiling at him and watching him blush.
‘What do you mean?’ he asked, and you swore you could see genuine anxiety on his face.
‘Big Bad Joel Miller helping out? Billy getting to tell you what to do? He’s like a pig in shit.’
Joel could feel the heat on his cheeks and was powerless to stop it. ‘Big Bad Joel Miller,’ he echoed, feeling the words on his tongue, seeing how they tasted. ‘Not sure about that.’
‘You must know there are stories,’ you said, leaning into him a little, goading him a little, wanting to see if you could get him to crack and tell you something about himself.
‘Don’t pay any of that much mind,’ he said. ‘Don’t reckon any of ‘em are close to the truth.’
‘Well, no they can’t be,’ you agreed, quickly, feeling like the conversation was slipping from you and not really knowing why.
‘Not sure there are words for some of the shit I’ve…seen,’ he said, and he saw the shift in your face, the shock before you covered it, and he knew that he’d scared you a little, but there were things he didn’t want to talk about, shit that he’d had to do to get Ellie here, to get her to be able to forget the cost of it all. Big Bad Joel Miller. No one had any fucking clue.
He looked over at you, at the way you had sunk into yourself, and he cursed himself. You were too sweet, too warm, and he’d gone and thrown a wet rag on your fire. If you knew about him you wouldn’t want to be anywhere near him. He took a step back, too. You’d made him forget for a second, that he was no good to anyone. Especially not to someone like you.
You were lost in your thoughts, watching the kids again but not really seeing. It wasn’t even what Joel had said, although you felt the way he was pushing you away, and you went willingly. It was that as he spoke you realised, finally realised, what the feeling was that had been pulling at you all night.
You were fucking lonely. 14-year-old you might have been OK with the QZ stuff, with what you had to do to survive, with keeping your sister alive along as you could, with making sure her death meant something, even just until they cleared her body away. 14-year-old you might have even been OK with the teaching, although that would take some convincing. But the fact that you were alone, that you were nearing 40 and hadn’t ever really loved anyone other than your family, hadn’t ever really had anyone love you. OK, so you hadn’t married Jonathan Taylor Thomas, in the circumstances maybe for that you got a pass. But that you weren’t with anyone, that you had wanted love for yourself and never got it, that you had wanted to belong in that most specific way and you hadn’t, hadn’t ever really come home. 14-year-old you was screaming and howling and gnashing her teeth. You’d failed her, failed the both of you.
You were horrified to feel a tightness across your throat, the heat building behind your eyes. You needed to get away from all these people, needed to go and pity yourself in peace.
‘I just need some air,’ you said, barely above a whisper, pushing past Joel with your face turned away lest he see your eyes growing redder and wetter by the second.
‘Teach…’ he called after you, but you were gone, heading straight to the door, not seeing Ellie turn to follow Joel’s voice, to see you making a break for it, turning back to him with her hands in the air.
Joel felt his stomach drop, staring back at Ellie with panic written all over his face.
‘What did you do?’ she mouthed to him, and he shrugged, helpless. He’d pushed you away, had shut you down, had been rude and cruel and cold. But he had no idea how to mouth that to his teenage daughter across a dance floor. ‘GO AFTER HER’ Ellie whisper-screamed at him, and it jolted him, got his feet moving before he’d even given it another thought.
You were standing under the awning a couple of paces from the door, leaning on the railing and sucking in the chill of the air. You realised when you heard the door swing open that you’d cornered yourself, cursed yourself for getting all your years in the QZ.
‘Teach,’ he said, and you hung your head. ‘M’sorry, I didn’t mean to…’
‘Wasn’t you, wasn’t that, I just…I needed to breathe for a second.’
Joel paused, watching the way your shoulders rose and fell, sharp and insistent, as you gathered yourself.
He took a step forward towards you, saw the way you flinched and turned away, and stopped, deciding instead to sit on the steps, giving you space but not too much, distance but enough that he could reach out for you if you wanted him to.
‘I did a lot of things to get here,’ he said, after a while. The hair stood up on the back of your neck. ‘I ain’t ashamed of ‘em, I’d do ‘em all again to keep her safe, you understand?’ he asked, and you nodded, still with your back half-turned. ‘Never regretted getting her here, both of us, to safety and to family.’ You nodded again. You knew all of this, had lived all of this, but you didn’t stop him, couldn’t turn to look at him, just let him talk because you couldn’t think of a single thing to say. ‘What bothers me, Teach, is that Big Bad Joel Miller might be too old to do ‘em again.’
You felt a pull towards him, turned your body to peer at his face. He was staring down main street, avoiding looking at you, too.
‘What if I can’t keep her safe?’ he asked, almost to himself. You swallowed, moving towards him, sucked into his gravitational pull. As you sank down beside him on the step, he shuffled to make room for you, but you didn’t want distance, leaning further over so that your shoulders touched. He was so warm even in the chill of the night. You wanted him to take your hands and blow warm breath onto them, smile and put them on his chest to warm them even though the cold of your skin stung him.
‘She’s so capable, Joel,’ you said. ‘You did that. She’ll keep herself safe, soon.’
‘She’s just a kid,’ Joel said, but he wasn’t attacking, just stating a fact.
‘I wasn’t much older on outbreak day,’ you said, simply.
‘Lotsa girls her age weren’t so lucky,’ he replied, quiet.
Blood smattered all over a pink and purple tee-shirt. Curls caked in blood and mud. He swallowed.
‘I know that,’ you said, after a while. Joel watched your face. He saw that it was true, that you knew.
‘S’what was it, if it wasn’t me being so rude to ya?’ he asked, after a long silence that would have made his bones itch if he’d been sharing it with anyone else but you. You shied away a little, and he watched as you started to recede. ‘Hey,’ he said, reprising the conversation from the night at the kitchen table. ‘I want you to tell me what’s up,’ he said, and you smiled, faintly, recognising what he was doing.
‘Prom, I guess. Memories. I don’t know.’ You paused, tried to form the words. ‘It’s all about promise, isn’t it, being a kid and being in high school and doing all of these…rites of passages. There’s an assumption about how things will go. We all make ‘em, made ‘em. Guess it’s hard when they didn’t come true.’
Joel nodded. He wanted to pull you into his lap and rock you, gentle and soft in the night, feel your warm breath on his neck as you pushed your fingertips through the buttonholes of his shirt.
‘Most of the time I’m OK,’ you went on, trying to repair it, slink back under your shell, your slimy snail body suddenly exposed to the elements.
‘Everyone’s OK til they ain’t.’ Joel said. He turned to look at you, swivelled his body to yours so that your knees rested against his. His eyes were so deep and dark in the streetlights, his brows saddled as he petitioned you. ‘I don’t mind it, Teach. You can be all of it with me.’
You felt your heart gallop in your chest, heat suddenly in your belly.
‘So can you, Big Bad Joel Miller,’ you told him, smiling but earnest, wanting him to believe it was true. ‘I’ll take whatever you got,’ you said.
There was a moment, Joel knew, when he could pull back from it. That this was that moment, when he could turn away from you, could crack a joke or make some excuse to head back inside. Could get up and bolt for the gate, swing it open and face whatever demons were out in the darkness so as not to have to face his own. He knew this was the moment of no return, for him.
He looked down at your lips, painted red for prom and so soft, so plump. Your skin soft and glowing so gently in the light. How many more times was he going to have to resist you by porchlight? How many times could he?
‘Joel…’ you whispered, edging yourself closer to him, leaning in without even really thinking about it, watching him mirror you and Joel knew the moment had passed, that your little whimper of his name was branded on his chest, that he would parade it around town for you, would bare it to anyone who wanted to lay their claim.
Your hair was soft, so soft, in his palms as he pulled you into him, his lips crashing into yours, your mouth opening to welcome him, tongue dancing across his. He groaned, from deep down in his belly, for the want of it, for the way his tummy flipped at his first taste of you.
You were pretty sure you were dead. It was the only explanation. But if this was heaven then so fucking be it, because Joel was cupping your face in his hands, and his kiss was insistent and gentle and he was guiding you through it, teasing you open as you felt the hinge of your jaw creak under the pressure of your want for him. You weren’t sure you were breathing. You weren’t sure you cared.
He was pulling you closer, wrapping his arms around your back and pulling you into him, the weird angle meaning both sets of knees were in the way. You considered vaulting over the top of him, riding him on the steps of the mess hall while a bunch of teenagers supposedly under your charge danced under paper stars, but you had the wherewithal to hold back, to pry yourself from him, to lean your forehead on his and catch your breath.
Granted, you didn’t have a lot of experience. But you’d never had a kiss that felt like that.
‘Teach,’ Joel said, so quiet and just for you, and you could hear that he was out of breath, that his chest was heaving, that he was fighting it back just as hard as you. He lifted his head and gazed at you, the look of naked desire on his face such that you wanted it to be photographed, painted, hung in a gallery and studied by future generations.
Then, alarms. And yes, you thought, that felt about right. Everything had just shifted off its axis, after all, it made sense that the universe was now screaming.
Except it sounded weirdly familiar. Kind of like the one that you pulled when there was a problem at the gate.
You turned your head down main street as you saw the flood lights come on. You were up, Joel just behind you, as you and your little swishy dress headed towards it, front doors ripping open around you, men and women pulling on jackets over their pyjamas, arming themselves for war.
‘State your business!’ you heard Billy yell from the top of the gate, his rifle trained at a hard angle just beneath him. Jesus, they were close, you realised. Nearly right up on the iron.
You couldn’t hear the reply, vaulting up the ladder without thinking, without a weapon, leaving Joel to defend the gate.
‘State your business!’ Billy called again, and you came up beside him, peeping over the edge to report back on what you could see. There were three of them, that you could see from here. You scanned the treeline, the floodlights turning the trees into fingers scratching harsh at the night sky.
‘Where they come from, Billy?’ you asked, and he gestured with his head over to the right. You picked up the binoculars and scanned.
‘Can’t see any others,’ you reported back, going to the other side and holding up three fingers to the crowd.
‘We’re just passing through,’ the man called back, ‘saw your lights and thought…we’re injured.’
‘Injured how?’ Billy called. You could hear murmuring beneath you, a plan being hatched.
‘One of us is a woman. We were ambushed. They took everything we have, nearly took her but she got away.’
You peered down over the gate, could see that a woman was indeed holding her arm in a sling, her face pale. She was wavering, like she was ready to collapse.
You heard footsteps on the ladder, felt it sway the wall as Tommy appeared beside you.
‘Whatdya reckon?’ he asked you, his eyes focussed but his breath coming in short and fast.
‘They’re telling the truth so far,’ you said, ‘best I can tell.’
You stepped out of the way, Tommy taking your place at the wall while Billy stayed fixed, his gun unwavering from the strangers.
You heard a gasp, a kind of choking shock. ‘No fucking way,’ Tommy said, and you peered over his shoulder again, trying to figure out what he could see. ‘Shauna?’ he called down, the woman’s face snapping up to him, a shaky hand covering her eyes to make him out.
‘Tommy?’ she asked, as though she was dead and found herself at the gates of heaven, surprisingly less gilded than expected. You swallowed, saw Billy’s hold on the gun waver.
‘Open the gates!’ Tommy called, before turning back to the strangers. ‘Hands up and come forward slowly, I’ll meet you there.’
‘Who is that, Tommy?’ you asked him, grabbing at him as he made to hurry past.
‘It’s Shauna,’ he said, his face pale and disbelieving. ‘Where’s Joel?’
‘Who the fuck is Shauna?’ you asked, every nerve ending screaming.
‘She’s Sarah’s mom,’ he said, before he disappeared down the ladder, calling for Joel as he went.
‘Who the fuck is Sarah?’ Billy said to you, his gun lowered but eyeballing the group all the same.
You had no idea.

A few of the highlights
After he threw the pitch in the Marlins game in Miami which he was still recovering from a shoulder injury (right after he got traded) he went into his back yard and and practiced and threw 5 pitches to prepare but he's much healthier than two years ago.
Some talk on Jayson Tatum and how he makes 6 times as much as him and he always knew he was destined for the big time in the NBA and he was always a stud.
They always talked as kids about making the nba and nhl respectively.
The video was technology class in 7th grade before high school.
His dad wanted to go with him to the baseball pitch and his mum was out of town.
He loved hanging out with jayson and catching up for a few hours.
He talked about Sherwood in 2020 he tried a few brands, he helped with the design process and was their first hockey player since their rebrand.
He talked going to Raising Cains, he was partying and going to eleven and without sleep and he had agreed to do things prior to the final. He talked about all the opportunities to do extra signings and things.
He decided to a interview with sports net and decide to give a shout out, he loves the people in Calgary and hates the people in Edmonton and he got family in Winapeg including his Grandpa.
He was excited to play in the charity golf tournament, he loves Charles Barkely and playing with TJ Oshie and the Kelcie brothers were cool.
And how he ended up singing We Are The Champions with Charles Barkley.
He was excited to meet the different people from the different sports.
He got engaged on the Thursday before game 1 in the playoffs and flew in his parents and fiancé's parents had a big celebration then went no booze for the whole playoffs and plans to do that again.
His special memories of the playoffs were the off ice stuff playing poker the comradeship with the guys.
He's sad the teammates that left but excited they got the offersheet and got paid and set for life and is excited to see them for dinner when they see them.
He was pissed after game 5 because he didn't want to go to Edmonton but he was so confident ahead of game 7 he wanted to do it for his family that got him there, he talked how his dad and Brady walked him to his car and wanted to do it especially for them.
He drives to the arena on his own he goes early getting there 4 hours early. Sam Bennet got a mention for liking to sleep and goes much later.
How incredible the emotions of his family and being the first tkachuk to win the cup,
Bringing his dad into the lockeroom was what it meant to him and his whole family.
Singing Brady praises for being so supportive and believes Brady will win it, he's too good not to, he's built for the play offs, and wants to be there when he does.
Literally everybody from Calgary reached out to him after the cup win even Darrell (Sutter).
Praising his old youth team London Knights and what they did for him and other players.
He heard from players he heard from or know and Robbie Thomas and people that won before Vllady got a special mentions he was a great veteran presence and okie too.
He talked the Paternark fight, and how it happened and Monty's involvement. He says there's no rules just beat the shit out of each other.
He'll never forget this year for the rest of his life.
He confirmed Brady did not touch the cup though there were a few close calls due to being drunk.
He says he's so much better health than this time last year, he's excited about this year.
He his fiancee and Brady are going to visit Taryn this Friday he says she won't listen to his interview so it won't ruin the surprise and talks how good she is a field hockey. Her preseason has started.
He loves to watch Barky in practice and is learning to do things and a special mention of Kucherov of Tampa one of his favorite players.
He wants to improve scoring from further out like Brady.
He's getting more recognised now but it's good and he's enjoying it.
He's being working on jumps, working on his skating, sprints and being strong weights but jumps.
He got in trouble for putting the cup in the ocean but the cup caretakers only told him afterwards but they understood but he got great memories.
The whole family sacrifices so much for hockey players and the Tkachuk name is on the cup forever it's forever.

Timezone - J. Slafkovsky
Songs masterlist
song: Timezone - Måneskin
pairing: Juraj Slafkovsky x girlfriend!reader
summary: Struggles in Juraj and his girlfirend's long distance relationship
warning: none
words: 1.1k
note: changed again songs masterlist and make it shorter, hope you don't mind!
masterlist
---
She and Juraj had been dating since they’re 16. They met in one of the Finnish high schools. He was trying to combine education with training. At the beginning it was tough, but when he met her, everything looked easier. She was tutoring him so he could get proper education and he was trying to teach her hockey.
They acted like an old married couple, despite their young age. When Juraj had a debut in Liiga, her parents agreed on him moving with them so they could be closer to each other. This helped him a lot because earlier, he was all by himself in a different country and now, she had a new family with the love of his life.
However, things got complicated when Juraj got drafted to Montreal. He had to leave her and move to a different continent and live 7 hours ahead of her timezone. She was the happiest person alive when he got into the NHL. She knew he's an incredible player and deserved this chance but was scared that they wouldn't make it as a couple.
I call you every hour just to tell you that I’m losing my mind
First months were terrible. They couldn't get into each other's schedules. Many times, Juraj called her after a game, completely forgetting that it's the middle of the night for her. She had the same issue. She called him when she had free time but he was on training so couldn’t pick up. Slowly, their relationship became based only on text messages.
They’ve been struggling a lot. Juraj missed her voice and her face. They’ve been together for two years. He was living with her and her parents. This created a bond between them that was painful now. He was the happiest to play in the NHL but started questioning if this is worth their love. He got caught up with his thoughts that he ditched his teammates plenty of times.
She missed him too. She couldn’t watch hockey without thinking about him. It was tough because the whole city was living by this sport. She just wanted to hug him and kiss him. She knew they couldn't do anything about it, so she had to wait until she graduated to move to Montreal. Because of their distance, her grades started to fall down and her mood changed completely.
Only thing that keeps us apart
Is a different timezone
On Christmas, her parents let her go to Montreal to be with him. It was the first time in months they could finally see each other. Juraj had training and games but still, he was coming back to her, not the empty apartment. He could picture this in the future.
She was more than happy to be with him. She was cooking all his favorite food when Juraj was out. She took care of his whole apartment while he was planning dates and trips around Montreal. They felt like the day was too short for them. She even met his team and they could see how much happiness she’s bringing to him.
After New Year’s Eve, she had to come back home. It was a hurtful time for them. For the past two weeks, they’ve been inseparable and now they have to come back to their jobs and live in different countries. She was crying all day when she had to pack but Juraj was repeating to her that only timezone is the issue when the love and care is still there.
So fuck what I’m dreaming, this fame has no meaning
I’m coming home
In March, she had a crisis. She felt like she’s failing at school, failing her family and friends but most importantly, she felt like she’s failing Juraj. She hasn't spoken much, tried to keep it to herself but one day, she completely broke. She called Juraj to tell him how she’s feeling. At first, she didn’t want to bother him but she knew that he’s her safe space.
It broke Juraj’s heart when he heard what she’s been dealing with. Suddenly, hockey hadn't been his priority but she was. He was close to saying to the coach that he needs a personal break. He wanted to fly to her and cuddle her. He spoke with her parents about it but they convinced him to stay in Montreal.
As much as they wanted him there to help their daughter, they didn’t want him to risk his career, especially that it was his rookie year. Juraj asked them to keep him updated with how she’s feeling, knowing that she won’t tell him the whole truth. It was a rough period of time for him.
And I don’t give a shit about the contracts that I signed
After the season was over, Juraj flew back to Finland to be with his girlfriend. He didn’t care that he had to stay for one more week to do media duties, he just wanted to be with her. He knew that he’s risking his place in the team by his actions but he tried to justify his actions. No one on the team said anything. They understood why he did it.
However, the media team told Juraj that he can’t do that and he needs to tell them this earlier so they can find an alternative. Again, he didn’t really care. He hated doing media and if this was the thing keeping him away from his girlfriend, he’s not gonna be bothered by it.
Now I know you’re sleeping, where I’m supposed to be in
When summer was over, Juraj had to be back in Montreal. Still, he couldn’t go there with her. She was in last year of high school but after the season, they could be together. This thought was keeping him sane. The whole three months they had were incredible. They were everywhere together. Even when he was meeting his home friends, she was attached to his hips.
Every evening, Juraj imagined her waiting for him at his place but he knew she’s asleep in her bed. He wanted to call her and talk about his day but with her final year, he didn't want to bother her. When he was going to bed, he wished that she was laying next to him. She was his home and he missed her like crazy.
One more season and she’s gonna be with me, that’s what Juraj was repeating to himself every day.
She got so used to his presence during holidays that she felt like she couldn't sleep by herself. Juraj, laying in her bed and cuddling her to sleep placing soft kisses on her face and shoulders was something she was missing the most. She knew she needed to sleep but without him it was difficult.
Last year and I’m gonna be with him, that’s what she was repeating to herself every day.
---

Here's some reasons to write/love Percy x Penelope x Oliver
@guess1mjustheren0w, this is for you :)
OKAY, so basically we know that Oliver and Percy are both extremely passionate about their (subjects? hobbies? y'know what i'm talking about). They both want to be the top, BUT, they aren't competing. We also don't ever hear any mention of anyone else in their grade level.
Percy is especially stuck up and Oliver is kind of all over the place (not when it comes to quidditch, but just life in general). From this, we can assume that they probably argued quite a bit, or at least until they got used to each other. This means that their passion clashes in a contained environment, causing tension.
This is kind of the base of Percy x Oliver, kind of an Enemies to Lovers vibe, but also a forced proximity.
THEN for Percy and Penny, Percy isn't quite introverted, but not quite extroverted, while I headcanon that Penny is more on the extroverted side. Penelope brings out the "rebellious" or more laidback side of Percy, while he bring out the more thoughtful or peaceful side of her.
I'm not really sure how to explain it but kind of imagine a scene where they're in a dorm, no one else around, there's a fire going, it's super cozy, they're laying down and Percy is talking about something he's super passionate about. Penny is just looking up at him with that gaze, the one where it's just full of love, and she's just smiling and they're happy.
Percelope (Percy x Penelope) is more of a sweet, dancing in the rain, running through fields sort of ship. They match each others intellectual abilities and are just so cute.
FINALLY, Penny and Oliver. I don't know the ship name but I definitely see potential. Most of it does revolve around Percy, but i think that makes a ship with all three of them work even better.
So Penny and Oliver are both really important people in Percy's life. They both love him very much and with the other one still in the picture, I think they'd first kind of hate each other. Not really hate actually, more like a strong rivalry.
They both want Percy, and are both going to get what they want. They probably argue a lot, they glare at each other, they make snarky remarks and comments, but at the end of the day, that's what fuels their relationship.
Penny and Oliver have a Rivals to Lovers vibe. They like to rib each other about things, but their rivalry converts into fiery passion (that sounds weird but idk what else to call it) over time.
I feel like they have the kind of love that it's like two teammates in a sport, they both play the same position and are equally as good. It's like that moment right before the game when they look at each other and just smirk and say "i'll score more point a than you", but in the end, they both win because they're on the same team.
They both love the sport (percy), but they love each other equally as much.
All of them fit together because they all balance each other out. Percy's want, combined with Oliver's need, and Penelope's desire, it all balances out. They're like different version of the same person, but they're different enough, so that they still understand each other, but aren't the same person with the same personalities.
So yeah, that's it! If you write something, let me know what it's called! :)
I'll also try to find the post that made me think of it bc i think it does a great job of describing it pretty well!

THE MAN! UMICH AU chapter i. new opportunities arise
in which, molly gets the opportunity of a lifetime.
molly maxwell had never been the type to have any sort of luck on her side.
she passed all her classes, and therefore graduated high school, because she worked hard. she made an all boys hockey team by training everyday and being good at what she does. and her female rugby team won their finals because again, she was good at the sports she played. everything she had in her life, she had because she worked for it.
so, when a video of molly smacking a grown male hockey player into the boards at one of her home games last year vent semi viral on some nhl fanpage, she was feeling pretty lucky. the hit had gotten her sent off for the rest of the game, but she didn't quite care. playing in a male dominated sport on a male dominated team had its ups and downs, and the downs were something molly had become accustomed to. she was treated differently as she was seen as an easy target, and the man in the video had made the mistake of thinking she wouldn't retaliate when he shoved her a little too hard or swiped her feet out from underneath her. molly had no issue breaking a few rules for a few men to get what they deserved.
her luck streak continued when she received an email by someone by the name of brandon naurato, who happened to be the head coach of the mens umich hockey team. molly, who was taking the bus home from practice at the time, almost fell out of her seat when she read the email, asking her to come play for his team.
all events lead up to this exact moment, with molly laying on the floor of her bedroom as clothes surrounded her. her three best friends rummaged through her closet, all discussing how jealous they were that she was going to go to frat parties and meet cute american guys.
mika holland was the newest addition to the group, molly having met her when she was dating one of her teammates. the relationship didn't last long, but molly got a new friend out of it. she was the shortest out of the four, but had the loudest personality. you could hear the girl making inappropriate jokes and laughing at her own jokes from a mile away.
summer smith and molly had once hated each other. constantly at each others necks throughout the first few years on high school. but when they were forced to pair up for an english project in the tenth grade, they quickly found out how similar they were and both abandoned any distasteful feelings the two shared. summer was down for anything, much like molly.
finally, scarlett hamilton, molly's best friend since the fifth grade. the two were always together, where one went the other followed. she would be molly's hardest goodbye, albeit her own mother. the two were never not stirring up some sort of plan to get the rest of the group into trouble. life would become significantly more boring once molly moved away, leaving both troublesome girls to their own devices.
"molly, do you think any of your teammates are gonna be hot?" summer asked as she continued to go through molly's entire closet, throwing things into either the 'yes' or the 'no' pile. "oh my god, you have to get with one. that is the story of the fucking century!" mika exclaimed, following her statement with a loud laugh.
"i'm not getting with one of my teammates, you freak." molly shot back, screwing her face up in distaste. "what a waste of an opportunity." mika retorted, flopping onto molly's bed.
scarlett hummed in agreement before flipping her phone screen around to show the rest of the girls whose instagram she was stalking. it was no surprise that she was stalking the univeristy of michigan's hockey team page. "this one's cute." scarlett zoomed in on one of the players. "i think that's my new captain." molly grimaced before returning to packing her belongings.
the four girls quickly fell into a vast conversation, topics ranging from who summer saw at her grocery store job to whatever scarlett's father had done to piss her off this morning, and finishing when mika got too in depth about her sex life.
and as summer finished packing molly's bag, signalling the end of their last hangout for a while, molly couldn't help but tear up about how much she was going to miss her friends. her only friends. the only people who weren't blood related to ever love her unconditionally.
moving across the world to play hockey was already proving to be the most difficult thing molly had ever done.
and she hadn't even met the team yet.

Okay, I'll send in three requests that will vary a little so you can get a feel. Now, keep in mind that you can do whatever you want with this, I will never be disappointed, it's just a means to share creativity.
How about this prompt:
"Don′t wanna sleep 'cause we′re dreaming out loud"
but with Goshiki? He's got plenty of big dreams, calling himself the Ace as a first year. I doubt he let go of that after high school
I saw the prompt and immediately thought about a million dreams from the greatest showman.
You make a lot of promises when you are a kid. Most of those promises are forgotten and left in your fondest memories.
standing on the edge of the playground in 4th grade, watching bugs crawl over the wood chips placed in front of them is where this promise was made.
“hey, [Name]? Will you follow me when I become an astronaut?” Goshiki looked at you with a rather intense gaze for a 10 year old.
“Of course! I’ll follow you to wherever the world takes us!” You giggle at him then go back to the bugs.
——— 4 years later ———
that promise held true as you followed him through jr. high.
while Goshiki did not pursue becoming an astronaut, he did find volleyball. You would stay after your club had ended to walk home with him. On many nights you would end up staying on the gym with him as he drilled himself over and over again.
some nights he only left because he could see your eyes drooping, and your yawns becoming more and more frequent.
at first you couldn’t see why a sport this fast paced had enamored him, but after many late nights and you first aid kit being used more often, you finally decided to find out.
you watched hours upon hours of volleyball tapes and started to ask more questions. And to be honest you still didn’t really understand it, but you saw the way his eyes lit up when talking about it.
you saw the way that he smiled when a game component finally clicked, and the laughter that was shared between his teammates after a particularly good skirmish.
you decided that maybe you didn’t need to understand.
——— 2 years later (After losing to karasuno)———
tear tacks were still wet on his cheeks when he went looking for you. You, who was at every single game no matter where, you who was always there with a smile and a hug, and who he loved more than anything.
He found you a standing next to a water fountain, once he got your attention, you gave him a hug. He held you to his chest and shook with silent sobs.
After a while he pulled back and looked you in the eyes, and decided then and there that he didn’t want to spend another day without you.
——
it took him until the end of his first year to finally ask you out. (To which you said yes)
The whole summer was spent going on dates and having fun with each other. The usual disappointment of going back to school wasn’t there, only excitement for the new volleyball season.
At the end of the volleyball season, he gave you a promise ring. He promised that wherever you took him, that he would go, as long as he got to stay with you. You kept the ring on a necklace throughout the rest of your Highschool years.
——— 3 years later ———
in your second year of college you got offered your dream scholarship. However you were reluctant to take it, because it meant moving to another country.
you brought it up to Goshiki and it was one of the first big fights you had.
he wanted you to take it. He felt like you had encouraged him to follow his dreams as a professional volleyball player and he wanted you to follow your dreams too.
you argued that you wanted to stay with him. That your relationship with him was more important to you than any scholarship. you eventually walked out to the balcony to get some space, and after cooling down a bit, you went back inside to find him. you sat down and tried to explain it from your point of view. He was one of the most important people in your life, and that moving away might break that connection. He explained that you had done so much for him, and that he didn’t want to hold you back from achieving something great. it was a long night. And in the end you agreed that you would take the scholarship.
the night before you left for the airport you gave him a promise ring, and took yours off of the necklace and put it onto your finger. ——— 2 years later ———
Visiting each other was hard. With Goshiki progressing into his volleyball career, and you spending most of your time doing work. but you made it work. one memorable night was when Goshiki had stayed awake long after midnight to stay on the phone with you. He was quite honestly delirious and it was mostly his subconscious talking to you.
you found it hilarious. He was filling the silence with mostly meaningless babble. It was a great background noise for your studying. eventually you got bored of studying and you turned your attention to your boyfriend asking him questions and watching him put too much effort into answering it.
eventually you remember how late it is over there. “Hey lover boy, why are you still awake?”
he blinks his eyes lazily at you before slowly responding, “I don’t ‘wanna sleep when I could be dreaming out loud with you.”
you feel your heart melt at this man, who even when tired is thinking of you and wants to spend time with you. “I love you baby, but you need sleep. Good night my love”
“‘Ood night”
———
the night of your return was marked on the calendar you and Goshiki shared. However near your return date your supervisor noticed how antsy you were getting and managed to get you a return flight a week earlier. you decided not to tell Goshiki about the new flight date so you could surprise him. The first thing to do was call his teams manager to make sure that he could get a free day. and after a long call, and being put on hold for far too long, Goshiki would be free for the next day.
——— the next day ———
Goshiki has been doing a lot of things in the weeks leading up to your departure, one of which was to buy an actual engagement ring. He had bought this ring* right before practice. His plan was to propose to you right after you got out of the airport. Strangely enough when he went into practice his manager kept giving him knowing looks. He ignored it and kept practicing until the coaches called them over and cut practice short. Goshiki (who was rather confused) took the drive home. It was a fairly normal drive home with not much traffic. Until he got a text from you. ❤️My beloved❤️: will you pick up some flowers for me?
❤️My beloved❤️: I ordered them already all you need to do is pick them up. Thank you 😊
Me: sure, send me the address
❤️My beloved❤️: thank you 😘
——— a few minutes later ———
Goshiki walked into the store, only to pause when he saw you. “…[Name]?” He looks at you, then rubs his eyes to make sure you are real. “Goshiki!” You run to him and hug him. “How, How are you here?”
“they let me go a few days early, and I came to surprise you!”
Goshiki fumbled around his pockets for something. He seems to find it quickly but looks up nervously. “you good there Goshiki?”
“yes! Yes I am, um this isn’t how I wanted this to go,” he looks at you and smiles. “But you mean the world to me and I’m so happy that you came home early.”
he gets down onto one knee and pulls out the ring. “[Full Name] you are the love of my life. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
“YES”
*this is the ring I was thinking of

Can i request a haechan enimes to lovers but witha darkskin fem
Haechan walked into the library looking around for Yn. He finally spotted her at a round table with a few books and papers around her. He rolls his eyes going over to the table. He throws his things and himself down causing Yn to side eye him.
“Let’s get this shit over with. What are your ideas?” He asks
“Well I don’t know yet but I was thinking a huge canvas with paint and-“ Yn starts but Haechan cuts her off
“No. I’m not painting anything” he says
“Okay I’ll paint and you draw” Yn says calmly
“Draw what?” He asks with a scoff
“I was thinking a snake with a bunch of flowers around it” Yn says making haechan sarcastically laugh
“No.” He flatly says
“Well what ideas do you have?” Yn asks making haechan sigh
“Listen Yn. I don’t like you. I damn near hate you. I don’t want to work with you and I don’t want to be your partner. Matter of fact I’m going to Ms.park tomorrow morning and telling her to change my partner.” Haechan says leaning in to Yn
Yn smirks leaning in getting closer to haechan. The smirk on her face made him nervous
“Oh haechan. Your so cocky. Do you think I want to work with you either? I don’t. I’m working with you for a grade. Get your head out of your ass. Your not that special.” She says her smirk turning into sickly sweet smile
“Now…we’re going to do the snake and flowers”Yn says standing up from her seat collecting her things
“I have to get to practice. We can talk more about this later” she says walking to the door
“H-how!? We don’t have each other’s numbers” he says
“I know. You can text me on instagram, I know you stalk my page” Yn says with a smirk. She winks at him before taking her leave
Haechan sits down in his seat. Very hot and very bothered.
“I don’t see why we’re here” haechan says sitting down at the bleachers
“I just wanna stare at the cheerleaders” Jeno says smirking
“Your such a creep…scoot over” Renjun says
Haechan groans looking over spotting Yn on the field. His sour looked drop once he seen her in her navy blue, white, and gold uniform. Her curls were half up and down with a pretty sparkly white bow.
Her smooth dark skin glistening from the sweat caused by the 80 degree heat. She actually looked really beautiful out there on the field. On HER field.
“Oh shit bro. Yn is hot” Jeno says
“She’s like our best cheerleader” Renjun says
“Yeah and her academics go CRAZY” Jeno says blowing out air
“She’s not that great. She’s only here because her dad owns the school” Haechan mumbles making his two friends side eye him
“Why are you so mad?” Renjun asks
“Yeah like what’s your real problem with Yn anyway?” Jeno asks
“I just think she’s fake” haechan shrugs
"what about her is fake?" Jeno asks
"everything. Everything about her" Haechan scoffs
"You dont have a valid reason to hate her" Renjun says
"exactly, what has she done to you?" Jeno asks
Just then the crowd starts screaming as the cheerleads run onto the field.
“Must be half time. Pay attention to your girl” Jeno says smirking making Haechan scoff
Haechan watched Yn closely. She was really good. Like REALLY good. He watched as her teammates threw her in the air and catch her. She did a lot of flips catching haechan by surprise.
“So channie…are you gonna ask her on a date?” Jeno asks
“Why would I?” He asks
“Because your totally into her” Renjun says
“I’m not. I hate her” haechan says
“Are you trying to convince me or yourself?” He asks with a raised brow
Just then the crowd cheered again meaning half time was over.
“Go catch her. Now” Jeno says making haechan sigh
"I do need to talk to her. It wont be about a date tho"
He quickly jogs after Yn, finally catching up to her. He grabs her hand catching her by surprise
“Haechan? What do you want?” Yn asks
“I Uh…what’re you doing after this?” He asks making her look him up and down
“Why?” She asks
“Because I want to take you out.” he says flatly
Yn looked him up and down before giggling at him
“Just yesterday you told me you hate me now you want to take me out? Get over yourself haechan.” Yn says rolling her eyes going back over to her team
Haechan sighs grabbing at her arm.
“No yn YOU get over YOURSELF. Do you really think I’ll go out with you. Your so full of yourself Yn. I was taking you out to discuss the project. Remember when I said I damn near hate you? Well it’s official I hate your stuck up ass.” He says shocking his friends and Yn.
"Haechan please. Your so got damn stupid nobody will ever go out with you. I hate you too you stupid prick" Yn says before throwing her water all over Haechan
Angerily haechan wipes the water from his face.
"Cant stand that fucking girl" Haechan mumbles
"Dude your an asshole!" Renjun says chucking at the soaking wet guy
"We said ask her on a date not piss her off"Jeno says smacking the back of his neck
"Bro fuck her. I'm not going to keep telling you guys I hate her!" Haechan says stepping away from his friends
The two friends shale their heads before going to apologize for their friend's behaviour.
"Then he says he hates me! Mind you I've never done anything to him!" Yn says pacing her brothers bedroom
"He's a total dick. I'll beat his ass" Jaemin says
"You dont have too. I can just get that asshole kicked out of his clubs" Yn mumbles
"work smarter not harder" Jaemin says making the girl chuckle
"I should also put just my name on the project" Yn says looking over at the half drawn project
"Thats my girl! Get em kicked out of the school why dont you!" Jaemin says clapping
"Anyway, whats for dinner?" Yn asks
"Uh I'm taking Mimi out for dinner and probably staying at her place but dad dropped of some money maybe pizza" He says shrugging
"Yeah that doesnt sound bad, Tell Mimi I said Hi" Yn says
"Will do, Love you!! Dont stay up to late" Jaemin shouts
"Love you too, I will!!!" Yn shouts back making the boy chuckle before taking his leave.
Over the hours, yn ordered her pizza and sides while cleaning up the house she and her brother shared.
Finally done cleaning, yn sat down with her slice of pizza and wings ready to watch her show. Over the next few minutes she could hear thunder rumbling outside.
she picks up her phone checking the battery just in case the power goes out.
turning off some of the lights, yn goes back to her corner in the sectional couch. a few minutes go by before a knock was at the door. Yn looks back confused
"Dont tell me Jaemin forgot his key" She mumbles going to the door
she pulls open the door groaning at the sight of Haechan
"What do you want dick" She says making him roll his eyes
"My power went out and my friends arent home. I have no where else to go,plus i figured we could work on the project" He says making yn chuckle
"Boy bye, after everything you said too me you expect me to open up my home to you? You better go home and light some candles" Yn says going to close the door
But Haechan's hand stops it
"What the fuck do you want Haechan?" Yn asks
"Just let me in. I'll leave in the morning" Haechan says
Yn takes a look outside seeing that it was pouring down hard and Haechan was soaking wet. She groans as she opens the door wider
"Stay right there dont track water inside my house" She says going up the stairs to jaemins room
Haechan nods taking his shoes off looking around the house he only been in once. He noticed the almost fully painted canvas. Yn finished it?
"Here theres a bathroom in there" Yn points
"Your still doing the project?" He asks pointing to it
"Dont worry about it. Go change" Yn says harsly
Haechan rolls his eyes going into the bathroom to change into the black T-shirt and gray sweats yn gave him. Once he was dried and dress he walked back to the living room to see yn working on the canvas.
"Dont sit next to me" She says making Haechan scoff
"As if I want to" He says
"But you want to be in my house, watch it" Yn says dipping the paint brush
"It looks nice"Haechan says after a few moments of silence
"I know" She mumbles making him scoff
"It's almost finished. I'll write your name on it and then we wont ever have to deal with each other ever again" She says standing up
"Great" Haechan says making the girl roll her eyes
It was silent as Haechan watched her go to the kitchen
"Hungry?" She asks
"Uh yeah" He says as she comes from the kitchen with a plate. She takes her seat on the couch biting into her food. Haechan stares at her in confusion causing her to laugh
"Oh you thought I made you a plate? No go make your own" She says turning her attention back to the tv.
"It's gonna be hell here until the morning" Haechan says
"You can always leave" Yn says back
Seeing as Haechan rather be warm than cold, he decided to make his plate in silence. After making his plate he sat back in his seat turninng his attention to whatever was playing on the tv.
Just then a loud rumble of thunder shook the house before the power went off.
"FUCK!!" Yn screams putting her plate on the table.
"See what happens when you talk shit" Haechan says smirking
"Haechan shut the fuck please and make yourself useful and follow me" Yn says
"why would I follow you anywhere? And in the dark at that?" Haechan asks
"Too get the fire wood now lets go before you piss me tf off" Yn says walking to the basement with her flashlight on.
"Wheres the wood?" Haechan asks once they get down the stairs
"In the corner" Yn says messing with the fuse box
"Do you even know what your doing?" Haechan asks grabbing a few pieces
"Do you know how to shut the fuck up?" Yn asks making the male chuckle
After a few attempts and the power not coming on, yn and haechan went back up the stairs to start a fire.
"Does your dumbass need help?" Haechan says just wanting to mess with yn at this point
"Not from your ass, especially when your an all C student" Yn says throwing a match onto the wood
"I am not!!" Haechan says
"You are, Shut up" She says throwing a blanket at him
He catches it still talking under his breathe.
It was silent as the two sat in front of the fire on their phones. Haechan looked over watching as Yn shivered a bit.The fire was helping but not by much
"Hey dumbass" Haechan says causing yn to look up.
Haechan had his arms open as if he was inviting her in for a hug. Yn scrunched her face up rolling her eyes
"Boy bye" She said before hugging her blanket tighter and looking back down at her phone.
"Stop acting stuck up, we're both cold and this fire you made sucks" He says making her smack her lips.
She scoots closer to the blond as he wraps his arms around her
"I hate this so much" She says tossing her now dead phone to the side
"I hate your ass too" Haechan says making her groan
"I never said that! got damn Haechan what the fuck is even your problem with me?" She says pushing the male away from her
“Me? You have a problem with me!” He says annoyed
“Only because you have a problem with me!! I didn’t even know who your ass was until last year!” Yn says rolling her eyes
“We’ll my problem with you is, your spoiled stuck up nepo baby. You think because your dad owns this school your hot shit! Your not!” Haechan says making Yn roll her eyes yet again
She chuckles before looking at haechan
“Spoiled? Stuck up? Nepo baby? Please Haechan’s you know nothing about me” she says waving him off
“I know enough and I know I’m fucking right” he says
“You couldn’t be any more wrong. The man is my step father alright? He didn’t get me in the school I got in on my own. The school reached out to me! Im not spoiled nor am I stuck up. I just don’t fuck with you” she says rolling her eyes with a scoff
Haechan frowns. From the looks on her face she didn’t seem close with the man like everyone said. Had he been wrong about her this whole time?
“So your not close to him?” Haechan asks making the girl scoff
“Never was. You hate me based of a fucking rumor. Don’t even know anything about me” Yn says getting up from her seat on the floor
The next morning the power was back on. Meaning Haechan could get the fuck out.
Haechan woke up to Yn sitting in the corner working on the painting. He gets up going to sit next to her
“Looks nice” he says
“Thanks” Yn says
It was quiet before haechan spoke again
“You know Yn I’m sorry” he says
“I don’t need your apology haechan. You hate me so keep it that way” she says dipping her brush
“That was before I knew you” haechan says
“Exactly. You didn’t even know me before you started hating me so don’t stop now” Yn says
“Come on Yn don’t be like that. I honestly thought about it a lot last night and I don’t want to keep hating you over something so stupid and petty” he says making Yn sigh
“Change of heart? Why?” Yn asks putting the brush down
“Because you’ve never done anything to me. I’m just a childish immature guy. I definitely shouldn’t have judged you before knowing you and I’m sorry” haechan says shocking Yn
“Your saying sorry?” Yn asks surprised
“Yeah. You don’t have accept my apologies right now but I really just want to get past all this.” Haechan says scratching his neck
“I don’t accept your apology” Yn says causing haechan to sigh and put his head down in disappointment
“But, I’m willing to look past this” she says handing him a paint brush
“Thank you” haechan says with a small smile
She gives him one back and they both start working on the project

Ahem.
*Soleil looks at her notebook* I am reporter Soleil, and as you know I like to ask questions. May I know how you and Tabito Karasu met? How did the spark of romance arise? What is your story?
Being an IshAsu fan, I would like to know how all this came about, and we are on national television.
📸📸📸📸🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤📽
*Ish sits awkwardly in the chair in front of Soleil, waving a little at the camera before turning to her*
I will say that the full story has already been narrated to Nami, which I will tag to this, but I also do not mind narrating it again, Miss Soleil.
Warning. It gets long.
*coughs*
It all started back midway through first year of high school (10th grade, in other words). The Osaka Prefecture School Fest season, specifically. Because our school had both junior high and senior high sections, we were hosting it at the time bear with me, I'm 18 years old to match his age in the storyline.
So we met around the third day, when I had a debate. He mistook me for his teammate from behind, this Indian guy the same height as me. He just sorta realized I had dysphoria from the start, though, cause he said I definitely look and act like a guy 🥹
Anyway, I decided to help him. We searched for his teammate all around the school, talking in between about random stuff. We clicked pretty fast. When we found his teammate, he reassured me about the debate and told me he'd be there.
After the debate, I ended up spraining my ankle, and he just took me to the infirmary. Stuck with me the entire time. I had to ask him when his game was for him to immediately panic and run to his match. After the day ended, though, he came up to me and asked if I'd be there for the remaining days. I said yeah.
I went for versification the next day, then walked around with him till he had a match. The next days were also like that, we got a little closer, and then he made a bet that if his team won against mine (our teams reached the finals), I'd have to do a favor for him, and the opposite if we won.
His team won.
The favor? He gave me a slip of paper with his phone number and the favor being to call him, cause I was too awkward to text someone.
We started off as friends who got close in a short matter of time, we'd visit each other every now and then, video calling every other night, I somehow bypassed his mental walls within a few months, like he'd done past mine. He went through a tough time in the meantime, which I'd helped him with.
The spark of romance... hm, that's tough, because I have a hard time processing romance. It felt as if his soul and mine were on the same plane, and had somehow grazed by and left a mark. The moment it happened... would be a year later on this one time my mum let him show me around downtown Osaka at nighttime she loved him when he first came over. I just sorta realized I didn't want him to slip through my fingers that night.
He confessed first, though. Called me on a random Sunday, two weeks after, if he could use one of my poems to confess to this guy he really liked. Had a heavy heart, but I agreed. And... that was the first time he texted me, my poem and his confession.
Now, though, texting is a normal occurence, but I still have not cleared my chat once.
#can't believe this was so long gosh 😭#a few more details in this too that the other narration lacks#but that's our story everyone thank you so much for listening!#asks: soleil!#self ship#mutuals#fc girlfriend#girlfriend fc

I like Bakugo, I think he’s a fun character, even if there are moments that are just bullshit. And the biggest bullshit is that he passed the final exam. Thinking of that always pisses me off tbh. He and Sero both had to be carried out, yet Sero failed? Also, why was the fact that he attacked Izuku not brought up? I feel like attacking your teammate has to be an automatic failure? Its easily one of the worst parts of the series.
It makes sense to me because of the different level of contribution.
Katsuki only was unconscious and needed to be carried in the last minute. He was an equal player within fighting against All Might and getting the win up to that point.
Sero, on the other hand, was knocked out immediately and Mineta had to do literally everything to fight Midnight. Sero didn't do jack all because, again, unconscious.
As for fighting Izuku within the round... I mean Izuku also initiates a fight back so they're equal there. If one disqualified them then so does the other.
But there's probably rules within the round that technically allow that. Either because the rules are so loose that they can allow bickering and infighting as they're graded on overall result. So the fights would lose them points rather than making it full pass-fail.
But also because there's definitely students who would fight each other in the round for strategy purposes. Maybe it's a Quirk thing, but there's also like. They distract their opponent by bickering with each other instead and then striking when the guard is down. To ban students from fighting each other would be to ban a potential strategy.
