It’s the middle of the night and Polnareff is awake. The Kujos’ couch isn’t very comfortable, but that’s not why. He sits up and rubs his eyes and tries not to stare too hard into the darkness of the living room. It’s really unfair, he thinks, that both the dark and the light scares him. Or, well, it’s more like the latter makes him sad. He can’t light a cigarette anymore without wanting to cry. It’s stupid.

In the doorway behind him, the air shifts. A soft exhale.

Silver gleams over Polnareff’s knuckles for a split second as he ducks down—and just as quickly remembers himself. He glances over his shoulder and sees the man of the house frozen in the doorframe, face as grey as everything else in the dim half-light of the room, eyes more hollow than the pockets of black gathered in the spaces that light still avoids.

Jotaro blinks at him. Then, with steps so light he seems to drift over the carpet, he comes around the couch and sits down next to Polnareff.

He looks like shit. Polnareff feels the faint urge to say so; if it were light out he would tease the younger man mercilessly, cackling at the terrible ripostes Jotaro would return with and wincing at the more effective (and physical) jabs that would follow. He would laugh, and Jotaro would smile despite himself, maybe even chuckle a little too.

But he doesn’t. The quiet of the house and the dryness in his throat and the hollows in Jotaro’s eyes tell him not to, so he doesn’t. He swallows. It takes more effort than it should.

They sit there for a while. If Polnareff really wanted to, he could lift his head and glance over at the red glowing numbers on the stove over in the kitchen; they’re perfectly visible if he leans back a little. Something keeps him from checking. The dark is horrible, but the idea that the dark will give way to a weak and repulsive grey creeping through the windows in just a few short hours is-…

A hand covers one of his fists where it’s clenched tight at his side. When he looks, Jotaro doesn’t look back. But the man shifts slightly closer.

Polnareff’s throat feels thick again. He understands this, he thinks, and scoots over until their shoulders touch. He pointedly turns his gaze away.

When Jotaro’s head comes to rest on his shoulder, Polnareff squeezes his eyes shut and keeps breathing. It’s all he can do.

Tbh! I can’t really tell by the abbreviations which one is c and r so I’m sorry about that 😔

But here’s a summary of what I think they think of each other:

On a conscious level both of them realize that the other is themself but they are so removed from each other in age and demeanor that they treat each other as different people, if that makes sense.

In young Pure Vanilla’s mind, he of course is scared of what in the future makes him turn so apathetic to the world, and so reluctant to give and receive kindness. But more importantly, his adult self needs comforting and healing and that’s what he can control and can do for him.

In Truthless Recluse’s (I’ve been calling him Dark Vanilla for the most part as an alias he would use in the AU) mind, he is prepared to protect his child self from Shadow Milk by any means possible and is initially on a hair trigger looking for any signs of Shadow Milk Cookie’s early influence. However, he is slowly but gradually realizing that Shadow Milk Cookie influenced his memories when they interacted, and re-experiencing them from this outside perspective is giving him a tiny bit more peace of mind for the safety of his child self. But this also means that he’s done a lot to himself in the future based on the words of Shadow Milk and is blaming himself for having changed so drastically. He doesn’t believe that he himself will ever be fit to hold the title of hero again, but he does believe that his child self’s potential is separate from his and that child Pure Vanilla, with his boundless kindness, is fully deserving of all the status and power to come his way in the future.

What drives me even more insane about this scene is how you'd expect Gojo to imagine High school era! Geto in the crowd. Or at least not the cult leader, worst of all the curse users Geto Suguru. But no, it's the cult leader Geto. It's Geto as Gojo last remembered him. As Geto last was. Whatever choices Geto made, wherever his choices led him and them, however he was, whoever he was, traumas and messed up ideas and bad choices and ill reputations and scorns and all. Gojo wanted Geto Suguru there. Not any ideal version. Not any "what if" version. Not any "at some point in time before things went downhill" version. Not any "when your hands weren't stained with innocent blood" version. He knew very well what he wanted. And he wanted it all the same. He wanted Geto Suguru. However he was. He just wanted him to be there. He just wanted him to be.

And he didn't want him to help him, he didn't want him to fight with him even if they were strongest together and always fought together for a while. He just wanted him to be there in the crowd and cheer him on. He just wanted him to stand there and give him one of his sweet, heartwarming smiles that shaped his eyes into crescent moons. He just wanted him to be. Then even if Gojo had died in the end anyway, he would have been satisfied. It would have been worth it. Only if Geto was there.
