Imagine Madzie got Alec he’s own Bubbles for his bday so he always has someone to cuddle with when Magnus is away (or when he’s upset about some Clave bs) 🥹
Tumblr media
I mean, something along those lines does happen in AWG2. 😂 😀 As well as some other plushy shenanigans, some coat shenanigans, and, of course, backpack shenanigans. So yes, while I normally would write you a scene of this - I'm going to have to keep this scene for when I start posting the second installment.
Also, that is exactly the kind of shark plushy that I imagine Bubbles to look like!

Dearest Auntie,
Have you heard about the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy?
https://www.edgarallanpoebar.com/tickets
I have managed to get tickets but am absolutely flummoxed about what to wear!!!
WWAJD: What Would Aunt Jillie Do?
I can give you super-helpful advice on this, because I attended it when it was in my area!
You're going to be sitting, probably in rows and close to the people next to you. Outfits that are elaborate or wide from the waist down aren't a good idea.
The chairs will almost certainly be the types of folding chairs that can be rented for receptions and such. In other words, not the most comfortable things.
Drinks will probably be passed down the rows, which means there is ample opportunity for spilling. Don't wear white, and possibly bring a handkerchief or hand wipes.
With those caveats in out of the way:
This is the time to pull out your fanciest top, waistcoat, jacket, and/or similar items.
Small hats, fascinators, flower pins or crowns, veils - whatever you can put on your head that will make you feel fancy and possibly mysterious. Emphasis on the small - don't block the view of others!
There will probably be a standing background section to take photos in front of. It's free, so if you're comfortable with having your photo taken (even if it's you taking a selfie), do that!
Have fun!

Hey sorry for being gone so long, it's the "severitus with alive Jilly au gone wrong, horcrux edition".
So, were going to do the same thing as last time. Harry pov, I'm warning you though, this boy has trust issues now and doesn't tell anyone almost anything, so nobody tells him thing in return so my boy is confused.
Year three
So I spend most of my summer with my parents but they are acting strange. It's probably because of the witch that escaped from Azkaban, Bellatrix Lestrange.
I still don't know what's going on with Tom's voice, but he calmed down (?) and only talks to be about once or twice a day and lately it's been preeeaty monosilabic. Not that I mind all that much since Tom's soul (?????) is kinda warm it's nice not to be alone
I'm gonna drop in and say that Voldy's soul is begining to merge with Harry's soul and I'm saying this because Harry won't find out until seventh year.
My parent's reconnect with some old friends, one of them is my godfather and is apparently really rich so I should be nice to him
The other one's are pretty okay, one of them is my future teacher and the other one is really creepy but oddly nice (??), like he gives me a pat on the back and hush me at random times and says stuff like "I wish it didn't have to be this way" and "You're such a nice kid" and stuff like that in a really creepy way
Peter apparently convinced my parents to let me go to my aunt for the weekend after I told him I kinda wanted to go ( he seemed really enthusiastic about it and was super exited I wanted to do it that weekend particularly ) I think I kinda like Peter, he seems like a genuinely nice guy even though he doesn't act that way around my parents. He also gave me advice on how to deal with my peers thinking I'm the butt of the joke
I'm on my way to Hogwarts and I encounter some dementors. I faint and I hear the sounds on children crying and a boy begging not to be beaten
Again, dropping in. Those are Tom's memories, he's sixteen year old (Tom) so he's not going to hear full on torture, just the childhood trauma.
Don't worry, Harry will remain in control of his body even if he will pick up some things from Tom
School otherwise goes like normal except when fucking Bellatrix Lestrange breaks into the tower and holds the knife to my throat. I swallow. She smiles, "Why do you feel like my lord?"
See you next time I know what to do!
Ooouuuu!!
This is really good, Anon! You have a nice concept going. I really think you should write this ☝🏽
So their souls are merging and now Harry is having childhood memories from Tom? That’s insane
The last bullet point! Broooo

The Immutable Form of Beauty: Bella as the American face of Palestine; The Black Madonna is Hot to GO!
Alternative Title: Unedited Blabber that May Not Make Sense; This is my Brain
Alternative Title #2: Art is my Religion
I have thought a lot about Dostoevsky’s famous beauty Will save the world adage, the institution of Church, and the holy firmament; the beauty of the Cathedral, the shrine, the manifestation of veneration of the divine in physical form.
“autotelic” “virginal” — both words mean “unto itself.”
Have you ever noticed how human beings act in art museums? Where else do we perform hushed whispers? Beautiful art has the latent autotelic quality of that which is divine. I am saying nothing new or interesting here. The autotelic nature of beauty:god:divine inspires us to be more austere, more deliberate.. and even more-moral.
In Plato’s forms.. hey Plato.. the central issue of beauty:God, and the Catholic problem of sin, is the earthly destructiveness of their mutable forms. The Mona Lisa in its form is immutable, unchanging, good, and true. I would love to sit and look at the Mona Lisa all day long today. I would love to sit on a grassy hill and listen to Gregorian chants all day long today. The object of art unto itself is an immutable beauty. Bella Hadid unto herself is an immutable beauty. The Madonna unto herself is an immutable beauty. Disclaimer, I am a self-proclaimed aesthete. Art is subjective.. you may not think Bella Hadid is beautiful, but I am sure you can conjure up in your minds eye, a Most beautiful woman. There is no evil in the beauty itself. This cannot be contested. Once again, I do not really feel like I have said anything interesting or shocking here, but I am building a foundation.
The earthly echo of these forms, the imperfect particulars of the Human ego create all the problems. Life on earth is a particular of heaven. Because what we create here on earth decays, hello Laws of Physics, the object of beauty is volatile. This volatility causes harm. I reckon there will always be war on earth. Oh how brave the new world would be. Only silence and the ocean are immutable and unchanging. The presidents should talk to the ocean more.. please. This is not to say the pacifists efforts are futile. I reckon Paris understands this. We really have to give it up for the French. If anyone still-living knows anything about revolution times, it is the French. I want to go in like 19 directions now. This is why you should not ever take my advice. I am not a great essayist, but I do have Ideas.
Anyways, I love that God made the American face of Palestine, a woman with a near-perfect Golden Ratio. If this is not evidence of the Divine, I do not know what will do it for you. We have collectively fallen away from reverence for The Creator. That is the whole problem of this war. We have placed our allegiance in the pages of books. We have killed off and silenced the indigenous peoples. We have placed our allegiance in the particulars of symbols. We have attached too greatly to the personal “I.” The appetite of the individual will is insatiable. Human, egoic appetite for war is insatiable. When we detach from our connection to the creator, we forget the wisdom of the tree. We forget the wisdom of the ocean. I can dance around the God word all day long, but we have forgotten what exists in silence. We have forgotten we are all brothers. I suppose this is actually what the whole history of time and Bible are about. I suppose when we All remember, Nothing will really happen, huh? Life will continue onward. Eventually, Brave New World will be rewritten. It will look the same. God will belly laugh. Time will circle on. This has all happened before. Progress is a funny word. Art is my religion. War..peace.. neither here nor there. The space between can only be found in silence. Namaste, bitches.
Love you,
Jilly

----
The sun peeked through the curtains when you rolled over in the bed, only to find your boyfriend’s side of the bed empty.
“Babe?” you call, getting up and pulling Buck’s sweater on and making your way downstairs. Buck’s back was towards you when you spotted him out on the balcony.
Something along the lines of ‘when am I gonna see you’ being asked on his side, you knocked on the glass door to tell him let him know you were there and he turned to see you behind him. His face went as pale as a ghost - like he had something to hide.
“I’ll call you back later” he tells the person on the phone. “Yeah, you too” and with that the phone call ends.
“Good morning,” you hum, stepping to the side, letting him into the apartment.
“Want some coffee?” making your way over to the coffee maker, Buck shakes his head and sits at the counter.
Curiosity gets the better of you, you cave and ask, “who’s calling you so early in the morning?”
“Oh, it was Maddie” he smiles, leaving the phone on the counter. “I’m gonna hop in the shower, be back in a few” he walks over, pressing a kiss to your temple before heading to the bathroom.
The shower was running and the coffee maker was beeping, letting you know that the coffee was ready but you barely heard Buck’s phone buzzing on the counter.
“Buck! Your phone is ringing!” rounding the counter, you pick it up to see who's calling.
Abby.
The name seemed familiar but you couldn't quite place why.
Shouting once more for him and getting no answer, you set the phone back down how you found it. You go about making your coffee when you hear buck's steps coming from the bathroom.
“Did you call for me? I couldn't really hear you”
“Mhm yeah, your phone rang” you mumble, he picks up the phone and smiles.
“Everything okay?” you ask, noticing the expression on his face.
“Huh? Yeah, fine.” he gives you a small smile and heads upstairs to get dressed.
----
Hen was driving and you were in the passenger seat of the ambulance after dropping off a patient at the hospital.
You were staring out the window, watching as the buildings passed by. “Y/n ?” Her voice broke through your thoughts.
“Penny for your thoughts?” she glances over at you, “you’re going to get permanent forehead wrinkles if you don't relax” a small chuckle slips past her lips.
“Do you know someone named Abby?” you thought maybe you were reading too much into this but perhaps Hen knew. The smile dropped from her face, sighing heavily.
Maybe there was a someone after all.
“Abby ? As in Buck’s ex girlfriend ?”
“She’s his ex?”
“Yeah, she is. Why do you ask?”
“Um- well he was all secretive this morning, left bed to take a phone call and when I asked who it was, he said it was Maddie. His phone rang while he was in the shower and it was Abby. He looked happy to see her call honestly”
“Oh” was all she said. Not a word more.
“Hen, come on. I know there’s more to the story then you’re letting on”
“Okay, she was a 911 dispatcher. They started talking and then dating. Her mom was sick and when she passed, Abby wanted to travel or something- I don't know all the details but she basically upped and left him. A few months later- he met you.”
This time you were the one that said “Oh” and she left it at that. When she pulled into the station, your phone rang.
“I’ll be back in a minute” stepped back outside of the station and sat on the bench right outside.
You answer and your god father’s voice rang through the line. “Hey kid, how are you?”
“Hey Chief,” you smile, “I’m good, how are you?”
“You know you don’t have to call me chief” he laughed, “Am I supposed to call you uncle Walle?”
He laughs once more, “oh god no, please don’t. Donna was asking when you’re coming down to visit, she hasn't seen you since the wedding.”
“Actually, I was thinking - maybe it’s time to come home” you mumble the last part, you don't know how you're feeling and you don't want to do anything irrational but you can’t stay here if there's nothing here for you and honestly, you missed home.
“Really?” you can hear the excitement in his voice, “We'd love that. You know you’re welcome to stay with us, even if you’re just coming for a visit.”
“Yeah, I think I will.” you smiled.
“Also we’re in need of a PIC for 61. Dawson is in the academy so if you're coming home..” he trails off making you chuckle.
“If you’re offering me the position, I'll take it without a question”
“Good,” he hums. “I’ll pick you up from the airport whenever you arrive. Just let me know. Take care of yourself kid.”
“I will, give Donna my love. I’ll see you guys soon.”
---
You took the rest of the day off, explaining to Bobby your sudden need to leave. You apologized for leaving them in the lurch but Bobby said it was fine, he understood why you had to go, wishing you well and he made you promise to come visit.
The clothes were shoved into your suitcases when you headed down to write Buck a letter. You couldn't bear to tell him face to face - although he used you as a rebound and broke your heart, you knew telling him to his face would break his.
You found a piece of paper and scribbled down an explanation.
“Dear Buck,
I’m sorry to be leaving like this but this was the only way I'd be able to do it without either of us hurting more than we are.
I know that somewhere deep down, you cared for me but there's more to it - I was a distraction from her.
I couldn't even do that successfully since you’re still talking to her.
There’s nothing left here for me and I hope you find the happiness you’re looking for, even if it’s not with me.
I wish you nothing but the best, Buck.
Love, y/n”
----
“Shay, come meet y/n. She’s the new PIC on 61″ your godfather has his arm over your shoulder. He’s been proudly showing you around the house.
“Hi, I'm y/n” you smiled at the woman in front of you. “I’m Shay, I'm your partner” she stuck her hand for you to shake it.
“It’s nice to meet you”
“I'm gonna take her to meet the guys.” She linked arms with you and pulled you away from Chief Boden.
“Guys!” she walked in, her arm still linked with yours. “This is y/n Boden-” “my last name actually isn't Boden”
“Oh,” she chucked, “Anyways, this is y/n. She's Chief’s goddaughter and she’s our new PIC. So everyone be nice and keep it in your pants” she glares at the guys.
You bite back a laugh and wave. Shay takes you around the room and introduces you to everyone.
“Behind the stove, we have our beloved Peter Mills, he’s the best cook in the house”
“Nice to meet you” he smiles before turning his attention back to the stove.
“That’s Joe and Otis, the two that are bickering by the round table” she points, before bringing you over to the longer table. “This is Matt, lieutenant for truck 81″ she gave his shoulders a squeeze and he smiled at you.
“That’s Kelly and his guys on squad, their names are on the coats, I promise it’s not as confusing as it seems” she laughs, you wave at them before she pulls you over to the couch.
“This is Herrmann and Mouch,” you say hello when you feel something nuzzling by your leg. Crouching down, you rub the puppy that was sitting beside you now.
“Who's this cutie?”
“That’s Pouch, she's our little mascot” Shay gave her head a pat before the alarms went off.
“Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61, Battalion 25. House fire, 254 83rd street”
You and Shay made your way to the ambulance, she hopped in the front when you shut the doors at the back.
Kelly bumped into you as he was running past, “sorry!” he looked back and smiled at you and you swear- you felt butterflies in your stomach.
---
There was no way those guys were getting out of there without some sort of minor injuries.
The entire building was up in flames and the smoke getting darker by the second. Shay had just loaded up the last patient into the ambulance and sent them off with the other paramedics.
Suddenly you were overcome with this wave of emotions. Remembering how you felt when you saw Buck was stuck under that fire truck or when Eddie was stuck after he stupidly cut the line.
Even though you had only just met these guys, it’s hard to lose one of your own.
A hand squeezed your shoulder, pulling you out of your thoughts. “You alright?” your godfather was standing beside you, looking at you.
You nod, “is there anyone else in there still? By the looks of it, it’s gonna come down any minute now”
“Severide and Casey. They’re on their way out” he tells you.
Shay was running towards the door when Casey and Kelly came out. Matt had a little boy in his arms. Noticing the boy was wrapped up in Kelly’s jacket, you glanced over at him who clearly looked like he was going to pass out.
“Shay, you got the boy?!” you shout, she nods and follows Matt over to the ambulance. Kelly was making his way over to Chief when he stumbled.
“Okay, let her check you out” Chief Boden helped him up, sitting him on the front of the truck. “I’m fine, just tripped” Kelly insisted, coughing his lungs out.
“Mhm yeah, no. Sit up” you had already pulled the stethoscope up and it was pressed to his back. Before you could tell him what was wrong, Casey shouted for you.
“Y/n! I’m going with Shay to the hospital!”
“Yeah, go!”
You turn back to Kelly who was bent over, elbows on his knees and his head in hands. Chief seemed to have disappeared in the few moments you turned around.
“Hey,” you rubbed the back of his shoulder softly, “you’ll be okay. Just drink some water and I’ll keep an eye on you, okay?”
“yeah, okay.” his hand rested your lower back before he stood and once again, there were those stupid butterflies.
“Come on, you can ride with us back to the house.”
Smiling at him “That’s okay, I’ll just get a ride with Chief.”
Kelly hummed, looking around the scene. “Chief’s gone. Looks like you're stuck with me.”
“Oh lucky me” your eyes flicker towards him, a smile on your face.
Kelly laughed, “but look on the bright side, this way you can keep an eye on me” he nudged you playfully before slinging his arm over your shoulder.
When you reached the truck, he opened the door for you. “What a gentleman,” “always am” he smiles, his hand on your lower back as you go to step up into the truck.
The ride back to the house wasn't all that long, Capp kept you company in the back and asked about where you transferred from. You realized that you didn’t really tell them anything about you other than your name and that you were Chief’s goddaughter.
“Well I have been living in LA since college. I was working at a fire station out there as well but I just needed - well I guess, a change”
“That sounds like something someone would say if they were running from something” Kelly turns in his seat, looking back at you. Humming, you give him a small smile.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
Your response was enough for him to tell him to drop it. He was sure in time you'd confide in him or most likely in Shay and she’d tell him at some point or another.
--
“Why don't you come over for dinner sometime?” Shay plops down on the couch next to you, shifting to face you.
“Uh, yeah I could. I’m still settling in and Chief was sweet enough to let me stay with him and Donna for now so I don't wanna just run out on them, you know?”
“Of course, just let me know when you’re free and we can go out or stay in and make dinner? Whenever you're up to it.”
“Thank you though, that’s really sweet of you” you give her arm a squeeze. Shay’s phone rings and she excuses herself.
Connie comes out, looking around and stops on you, “Chief Boden would like to see you.” You get up and follow her to Chief’s office, he thanks Connie and asks her to shut the door on the way out.
“How’s your first week going ?” He asks, gesturing to the chair. You take a seat, “it’s good so far, I've gotten like 4 offers to go out already” you smile.
“Go out?” His brows furrow- you know what he's thinking.
“Not on a date, relax. Herrmann invited me over for dinner with him, Cindy and the kids, Matt offered to take me out with him and Gabby, Joe and Otis want me to go to some hockey game with them and Shay asked me to come over for dinner” you listed off the invites.
“I’d take Shay up on her offer first. Herrmann and Cindy are great but I don't know if you want to take dinner with them and their 5 kids as your first night out here” Chief laughs, making you smile.
“I don’t want you guys to feel like I don’t appreciate you - because I do but it’d be nice to get out. You guys have been stuck with me for the last few weeks, I'm sure you’d like a break.”
“Y/n, you’re not a baby. If you’d like to go out, go ahead. I’ll get you a key soon but for now, just call when you’re on your way home.”
“Really? You wouldn't mind?”
“I think we could use a night to ourselves if you know-” “don’t finish that statement” your face twists, Chief shakes his head.
“That’s not what I meant. Go back to work now, I have stuff to do” He shoos you from his office.
---
You stood outside of Shay’s apartment, you felt like you were in high school again - Chief had dropped you off and said to call him if you needed a ride home.
Shay opened the door, “hey! you made it!” she pulled you in for a hug.
“I did!” you followed her into the apartment, she made her way to the kitchen.
Shay turned her attention to something she had on the stove and put the lid on it before looking at you. “What’s in the bag?” she asked, eyes on the bag you had set on the counter.
“Oh right, sorry” you chuckled.
“Uh I brought wine-” pulling out the bottle and setting it on the counter, “and a little birdie told me, this was your favourite” you pulled a bottle of tequila out of the bag.
Shay leant over the counter to grab the bottle, “top shelf stuff, you’re a woman after my heart y/n.” You smile, “do you need help with anything?”
“No, it’s almost done-” “have you seen my- oh sorry,  I didn’t know we had company” the voice coming from behind you called, it sounded familiar for some reason.
Shifting on the stool, you see Kelly coming down the stairs. The grey sweatpants clinging to his hips and he was shirtless. “Hey y/n.” he smiles, walking over and pulling you into a side hug.
Those stupid butterflies again.
You watch as Kelly makes his way to the fridge to grab a beer. Your eyes trailed over his body but you were pulled from your thoughts when Shay offered you a shot.
She poured one out for you, her and Kelly. “To y/n, welcome to Chicago and we hope you decide to stay here with us” she smiled before downing the contents of the glass, you and Kelly mirroring her actions.
Kelly disappears upstairs a few minutes later. The tequila makes you feel warm and somewhat bold.
“Hey,” you whisper shouted, not wanting Kelly to hear even though he was all the way upstairs. “You don't get all hot and bothered when he walks around half naked?” you pour out another shot for you and Shay.
She laughed, “oh babe, he could walk around butt-ass naked and it wouldn't make a difference to me”
Your brows furrowed as you down the shot. “I’m into girls, I thought someone would have told you by now”
“Oh- Oh! no, I just assumed-” “that I was straight and Kelly was my boy toy? No, he's too pretty for my liking”
“Did someone say I was pretty?” Kelly’s voice comes from behind you again. He’s fully dressed this time, he grabs the bottle from the counter. “I’ve only been gone for 10 minutes, how did you manage to kill half a bottle already ?”
Kelly set the bottle down, “Whatever you had in the pot is burnt now right?” he turns the stove off completely. You had both forgotten about the pot on the stove.
“I’ll order a pizza,” he steps away to call.
---
It was close to 2am and although you were  all off shift tomorrow, you should be getting home.
“I- I should get going” you stand, wobbling for a moment before Kelly’s hand rests on your lower back, steadying you.
“No! Spend the night!” Shay called, pouting about the fact that you were leaving.
“I can't” you mirror her expression. “I gotta call Chief, he’ll come get me.” you go to reach your phone but almost fall.
“No,” Kelly takes your phone from you. “I’m sober, I'll drive you home plus that’ll give you a chance to sober up a bit.”
“Are you sure ? It’s late.”
“It's fine, I'll get you a bottle of water, say bye to Shay”
Kelly leaves you and Shay alone for a few minutes, the two of you promising to go out somewhere soon and that you’ll call her tomorrow. “Alright, come on. I’ll be back soon,” Kelly leaned down and pressed a kiss to Shay’s head before helping you up off the couch.
The drive home was quiet, the windows rolled down and cold wind blowing through your hair. You missed this the most - the late night drives through the city, although you were tired, there were always people awake and going about their lives - no one was ever really asleep.
Kelly stops in front of the house, his hand reaching over to touch your shoulder softly. “You alright ? Feeling a bit better?” he asks quietly, you shift in the seat to look at him. “Yeah, thanks for the ride” you smile.
“No problem, I figured it’d be better to just bring you than you having to call Chief.”
You hum, head leant back against the headrest with your eyes closed. Kelly’s hand touches your cheek, his thumb rubbing against it softly. “C’mon, let’s get you inside. You need some sleep.”
Kelly gets out and helps you out of the car, walking you up the steps and helps you unlock the door. Chief had ended up giving you his key for the night because he wasn't sure what time you’d be back or if you were gonna get a ride with Shay.
Kelly stepped inside with you, sitting you down on the stairs. He kneeled in front of you, pulling your sandals off for you.
“Thank you,” you whispered.
“Is your room upstairs?” he asks and you nod, “can you get up the stairs by yourself?” you shake your head, knowing that if you attempted to walk up the stairs by yourself, you’d just end up back at the bottom again.
“Okay, I'll help you up and then I'll head out.” Kelly pulled you up, his hands on your hips to steady you as you slowly made your way up the stairs.
“By time you get upstairs, it’ll be morning” he mumbles, your hand over your mouth as you bite back a laugh. “C’mon,” Kelly picks you up bridal style instead, carrying you up the stairs. He stopped when he got tot the top of the stairs, looking at you.
Pointing to the door at the end of the hall, Kelly carries you into the room and sets you down on the bed. “Okay, all good now. I’ll see you at work okay? Get some rest.”
“Wait, where are you going?” you sit up, looking at him. “Home,” he hums.
“Just stay,” “y/n- I don't think that’s a smart idea.”
“Please. Nothing’s gonna happen, I just- at least until I fall asleep.”
You don't know what came over you. Internally, you blamed it on the tequila and the fact that you missed Buck and missed how it felt to be held while you fell asleep but you just needed someone- just for tonight.
You also knew that if you were sober enough to make this choice now, you’d be sober enough to remember it in the morning and seriously regret it but what do you care right now?
Kelly sighs, pushing your bedroom door in quietly before getting in bed next to you. “No funny business missy” he smiles to himself, knowing you can’t see him in the dark.
“Whatever you say, Lieutenant” humming, settling down with your head on his chest and his arm instinctively wraps around you.
Kelly would be lying if he said his heart didn’t skip a beat when you called him lieutenant.
---
“Did y/n come home last night?” he asked Donna.
“I saw her shoes by the stairs so I assumed she did.” Donna answers, her attention on cutting the fruit in front of her.
“Could you wake her up for breakfast ? I don’t wanna just walk in.” he asks her sweetly, she hums. “Sure, I'll go get her.”
Donna makes her way back upstairs and to your room. She knocks on the door, “Honey, are you awake?” she calls, knocking once more.
This time, she opens the door and calls, “y/n, baby. Are you up-” she smiles at the sight in front of her. Before she could close the door again, Wallace had already made his way upstairs.
“Is she up?” Donna shushed him, grabbing his arm and pulling him over to her.
You and Kelly were both asleep, the blanket pulled up halfway and your head was on his chest. Kelly’s arm was wrapped around you and your hand was resting on his shoulder.
“What the-” “shh, let them sleep. I’m pretty sure it was after 2 when they got in.”
“Donna, do you not see who she’s in bed with ?” he half shouted and half whispered.
“Wallace, she’s not a baby. They're sleeping in the same bed, it’s not like she's pregnant with his kid.”
Wallace left Donna upstairs and went downstairs knowing that if he stayed, he’d just ended up killing Kelly.
Donna walked into the room, she shook you softly. “Y/n, time for breakfast honey.” She shook you again when you groaned.
“Y/n, come on sweetheart.” you finally sit up, rubbing your eyes. “What?” you yawn, Donna smiles.
“Wallace asked me to wake you for breakfast. Maybe you wanna ask your friend to join us?” she looked down at Kelly who was still asleep.
“Oh my god. I forgot I asked him to stay.” you sigh, Donna sat on the end of the bed.
“Don’t worry. Just wake him up and you two come down and join us for breakfast. There’s extra toothbrushes in the bathroom” she gave your hand a squeeze and left you to wake him.
Kelly stirred when you shook him. “Lemme sleep” he mumbled, rolling over. “Dude, come on. You gotta get up.” you shook him once more.
Kelly opened his eyes, he blinked the sleepiness away before sitting up. It took him a moment to register where he was and what was happening. “Did I fall asleep?”
“Clearly. Now we have to go down for breakfast - together.”
“What?” Kelly’s eyes widened. “Yeah, so come on.” you get up and make your way to the bathroom.
--
You and Kelly head down for breakfast. Donna and Wallace were already sitting at the table.
“Y/n, Kelly.” Chief nodded, before the two of you sat down.
“Morning,” you gave him a small smile before pouring out some coffee. “Chief,” Kelly nodded back, sitting quietly at the table.
“So, how’d you sleep?” Donna asked, you and Kelly both looked up at her at the same time. “Sorry,” she hums, popping a piece of fruit into her mouth.
“So, which one of you is gonna explain why I had to find you two in bed together ?” Chief broke the silence.
You and Kelly look at each other and then at Chief. “Well-” Kelly starts.
You rest your hand on his, “he brought me home and I was the one that asked him to stay. Nothing happened, I was drunk and I fell asleep and so did he.” you told him, it’s better to get everything out in the air before he started to assume.
“Okay.” Chief just moved on and continued with breakfast like nothing had happened.
“Thanks for breakfast,” Kelly leaned down to give Donna a kiss on the cheek, she smiles and pats his cheek. “You know you’re welcomed here anytime, Kelly.” she glances at her husband for a second.
Chief gets up, “I’ll walk you out.” You were still sitting at the table with Donna when they left for the door.
Kelly was a step out the door when Chief called for him. “What really happened last night ?”
“Y/n told you.”
“Now I'm asking you.”
Kelly hummed, stepping back up the stairs. “Shay and y/n got drunk after dinner. I was still sober when she said she wanted to head home, so I offered to drive her home. I helped her inside and up to her room. She was the one that asked me to stay, “only till she fell asleep” - her words”
Chief’s arms folded across his chest. “Why were you still here this morning?”
“We both fell asleep. Nothing happened, Chief. I would never do that; y/n is a sweet girl, it’s clear she left LA for a reason and I don’t want to hurt her - that was never my intention.”
“Good-” he felt a hand on his arm, you were standing behind him. Chief’s hand rested on you, giving it a squeeze before walking back to the kitchen. You walked Kelly down to the car.
“I’m guessing I blew it” you asked him, shoving your hands into the sweater pockets.
Kelly’s head titled, the confusion evident on his face. “I mean, even if there was a chance of us being a thing- the whole ‘your boss/my godfather catching us in bed and lecturing you’ thing kinda ruins it huh?”
He laughed, his arm slung over your shoulder. “You didn’t ruin anything and honestly, Boden couldn't get rid of me if he tried,” you smiled, a hand coming up and resting on Kelly’s chest.
You looked up at him, he leaned down to kiss you but only for a moment before you could hear knocking.
Wallace was by the window, knocking for the two of you to stop kissing. Donna waved from behind him and pulled him away from the window.
Kelly smiles, leaning down to pull you into a hug. “I’ll see you work?”
“Yeah,” you smile.
----
*A Few Months Later*
“Just come with me,” Kelly’s arm was over your shoulder, the two of you walking through the house. “Dawson is going with Casey, why can't you go with me?”
“Kelly, it’s a gala for firefighters.”
“Okay but Herrmann is taking Cindy and she's not a firefighter.”
“That's his wife, Kelly” you rolled your eyes. Kelly stopped, pulling you against him, your chest pressed to his.
“Come on, just this once. I never take a date, I mean other than Shay but she’s into girls so it doesn't count”
“Let her hear you say that,” you laugh. “You've never taken a date?”
“I always leave with one,” he smirks, making you roll your eyes again and earning him a smack to the arm.
“You know, maybe I'll go-” “Really ?” “With Otis.”
“Y/n!”
“Fine, just this once.”
“Good, I can show you off all night” he pressed a kiss to your temple. “Oh shut up, like you’re not the brawns in this relationship. We all know i’m the brains”
“If that helps you sleep at night, sure” Kelly smiles, walking down the hall and you give him a shove.
A few weeks after the breakfast fiasco, Kelly asked you out on a proper date and soon asked you to be his girlfriend.
Needless to say, things have been going pretty smoothly besides a few times Kelly nearly gave you a heart attack with his need to run into burning buildings unnecessarily but you knew that feeling all too well.
----
“I’m going to go get a drink, do you want anything ?” you untangle yourself from him, a hand pushing the wrinkle from your dress.
“I’m okay babe, thanks” he smiled, giving you a quick kiss before letting you go.
You had only gone to the gala once before when you were a teenager but you don’t remember it being this full. You bumped into Herrmann and Cindy on your way to the bar.
“Y/n!” Cindy gave you a quick hug, “hey! how are you?” you smiled. The three of you made small talk for a bit, Cruz and Otis joining you at some point. “It’s pretty full this year, isn’t it?” you ask the group, you hear a few agreements.
“Apparently, it’s for firefighters across the country this year, hence the change to a bigger venue” Otis pointed out.
“Ah, I see.” you glance at the clock on the wall, you realize you had been talking to them for 15 minutes.
“I told Kelly I was going for a drink, he's probably wondering where I am, I'll see you guys at the table, yeah?” you excused yourself and made your way to the bar.
Leaning against the counter, you waited for the bartender to come your way as he was dealing with someone at the other end. You glanced around the room, trying to spot Kelly so you’d have a general idea as to where to go when you get your drink.
“Bartender!” you hear someone call from beside you, more than once you might add.
“Can you not see he’s busy? Might wanna wait your turn before he doesn’t come over here-” you turn to the voice next to you, waiting to put a face to the voice.
“Buck.” you stared at the man next to you. He hasn't changed in the months since you left. The same blonde hair, only grown out to show his curls more, his insanely blue eyes and that stupid smile on his face.
“Y/n.” his eyes studied you for a moment, unsure what he was looking for or even what to say.
The two of you stood there in shock, looking at each other like the other was an alien or something from outer space.
Buck instinctively pulled you in for a hug, his arms wrapping around you like they belonged there. “How have you been?” he asks, talking to you like you didn’t just up and leave a few months ago.
“Good, you?”
“Can’t complain.” he smiles.
The statement suddenly made you feel horrible, heart clenching in your chest.
“What can I get you folks?” the bartender finally makes his way over, Buck turns to face him. “A beer and uh, a Manhattan if I'm not mistaken ?” Buck glances over at you, you nod to confirm.
“What brings you to the gala?” Buck turns back to you while the bartender makes your drink. “Last time I checked, you were a paramedic.”
“Still am. My godfather is giving the opening speech so I came out”
“Oh I see. Everyone is here you know - Bobby, Hen, Chim, Eddie. I’m sure they’d all love to see you.”
“Um-” you look around, Kelly was nowhere to be found. “Sure, I have a few minutes.”
You grab your drink and Buck points you in the direction. His hand rested on your lower back as the two of you navigated through the tables. “Hey, look who I found,” Buck said as he reached the table, everyone turning their attention to him.
Bobby was the first one to get up, “Y/n, it’s so good to see you.” He gives you a hug, “same, I missed you guys.”
You went around the table saying hello to everyone, making small talk. Everyone was asking how you were doing in Chicago and you asked about things back in LA.
“I was looking for you,” a hand pressing against your hip, Kelly now beside you.
“Oh hey, sorry.” You lean into Kelly, he kisses your cheek softly.
You could feel the eyes burning into you. Everyone wanted an explanation- you had left Buck with no explanation to anyone other than Buck and now here you were a few months later all cuddled up with someone else.
“Everyone, this is Lieutenant-” you pause mid introduction. Do you introduce him as your boyfriend or as a friend ?
“Kelly Severide, y/n’s boyfriend” he finishes the introduction for you. Once again, you can feel everyone looking at you, there are a few glances around the table and then the eyes are back on you.
“Kel, this is my house back in LA. Captain Bobby Nash, Chimney Han, Hen Wilson, Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley.” you name them off, Kelly waves hello.
“I hate to pull her away but dinner is starting soon and we really should settle in now”
Everyone seemed fine with the fact that you moved on, you're almost sure it's come out as to why you left LA - left Buck.
Buck was the one who was still holding on, his eyes glued to you and Kelly. You could feel his eyes move from you to Kelly, to Kelly’s hand on your hip.
“No worries at all,” Bobby stood up, “come visit us soon, y/n. You’ll always have a home at the 118″ he pulled you in for a hug, you smiled. “Thanks cap, I'll come visit soon, I promise.”
“It was nice to meet you Kelly,” Bobby shook his hand, “pleasure’s all mine Bobby.” Kelly waited for you to say your goodbyes to everyone else.
Finally you got back to Buck, you smiled at him and pulled him in for a hug. “It was nice to see you, really.” you whisper.
Buck was a good foot taller than you so he had to lean down, his arms wrapped around you and his hands resting on the small of your back, rubbing up and down gently - just like he would when he had come home from a tough shift and needed to hold you in his arms.
This felt like a goodbye - the one you never had.
“Yeah, you too y/n”
You gave him one last squeeze before letting go, he watched you walk over to Kelly whose arm was now wrapped around your waist. You could feel Buck’s eyes on you as you walked back to your table.
Kelly pulled your chair out for you before sitting down beside you.
“Hey, who was that? He seemed kinda attached to you” Kelly chuckled, his hand reaching for yours. Looking towards the table where the 118 sat, eyes focused on Buck before turning back to Kelly.
“Just an old friend.”

TESTING OUT THE QUOTE REPLY THINGY? Very long after the post that inspired said replies, but what-the-fuck-ever:
@theladyw replied to your post “I have 314 things in my q  it is dumb how happy...”:
Pi
🥧! I have turned into a failure of a nerd, I didn’t even notice that, I’m just still thrilled I can go over 300 now, after getting into some very bad drafting habits from getting stuck at 299 a few too many times 🤣
@oranges8hands replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
#6 could be fun but true vote is mermay fic (assuming this is referring to the malec fic - or even better the follow-up to the AU mermay fic cause that thing lives in my head rent free) or sh wip - like another chapter of "if broken hearts were whole" or if you were still doing a sequel to "with an if in its soul".
I mean. IN THEORY ALL THOSE THINGS WILL HAPPEN SOME DAY?
I don’t usually actually totally abandon the WIPs. I have only done so twice in a dozen years? That’s not bad odds, tbqh. Now, has it been longer than usual without managing forward progress on quite so many of them? Perhaps....
*sighs forever*
@jadesabre301 replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
considering I just wrote a nearly 6K summary of a fic I'm not going to write, I'm a big fan of the not!fic collection idea.  But also you should probably work on the thing where snippets are due soon.
Not!Fic is fun! (I have like 10k of journal entries for Ella Shepard that aren’t fic but are good background references, yk?)
& I did not do the thing, and continue to be snippet-less past the deadline. No art for jilly. (But a belated thank you for the pragmatic advice? 😅😅😅😅)
@leahazel replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
I should do a poll like this but for all the unfinished scenes in one WIP.
On the one hand, YES! otoh, my polls have not actually been helping me do anything lately, so uh? YMMV?!?! *snerk*
@servantofclio replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
I admit Downworld for Dummies sounds hilarious to me
I mean. I find it hilarious, that’s why I started writing it? But then it needed more effort and I went *thbbbbbbbt* because my brain is mushy.
@thedivinemissema replied to your post “so staff is working on POLLS which will be great...”:
4 sounds good to me!
WELL IT SOUNDS GOOD TO ME TOO BUT I KEEP NOT WRITING IT?
I should yell about it on a 7kpp server or something, see if that helps me get back into it 🤞🤞🤞 (I just realized  I don’t think we share any discord servers, wtf? How did that happen? Or not happen. Also I have too many that I never check in on, I should do some pruning.)

1, 24, 29 for indigo, and 14, 16, 30 for dem :3ccc pweease
Ah, my emo sadists <3
Indigo:
1: What’s your OC’s biggest insecurity and how would they react if someone pointed it out to them?
Oh god, he has so many 😭. BPD and how it causes him to treat people sometimes and makes him frequently lose touch with reality bc he's untreated, his family thinking very little of him, his physical appearance, his stutter, etc etc. He's also been called a fuck up his whole life but unlike Ciggy, he's not able to play it off if someone else points it out. He can joke about being a burnout loser but no one else can. He's quick to fly off the handle and lash out, pointing out someone else's insecurities, though he's unlikely to dig as deep. He’ll either get fucked up after and try to forget about it, or he may go to Ren and/or Jilly and try to talk about it.
24: How would your OC react if they got humiliated by someone in a group of people?
Similarly to the last question though he's more prone to crying or shutting down because he really does not handle embarrassment well, it genuinely feels like the world is ending for him. He’s angry, yes, but he’s less likely to actually say anything back.
He won’t forgive you if you do this to him in front of other people. If it’s just him and the perpetrator, he’s more apt to forgive when he’s able to think logically, because it was kept between the two of them even if it was shitty.
29: How does your OC behave on the face of a conflict?
This is very circumstantial, I'd say. If it's something that should be considered a big deal, he can be surprisingly calm! Though that's not to say he'll be able to offer a good solution, he's more so just 🤷‍♂️ abt it. He's more apt to get shitty about the little things that don't really matter.
Demetria:
14: If your OC gets into a fight with their best friend, would they wait for their friend to make up with them, or would they try to make up with their friend?
This is also circumstantial. If it's over something petty, it takes her a little bit but she can step up and be the bigger person, and at least attempt to make amends. But she is a bit prone to accidentally talking down to people which can definitely work against her. If it's over something bigger, don't expect an apology. At least not for a while, she can hold a grudge.
16: Is your OC good at giving others validation of their feelings and making them feel understood?
Hmmm. She struggles a bit with this if she can’t relate. She won’t invalidate your feelings but she’s a bit awkward because she won’t know what to say. There’s definitely no judgement but you likely won’t feel entirely understood, because you aren’t. She means well though.
If it’s something she can relate to, you’re more likely to get an actual meaningful/memorable conversation out of it. She’s lived a very long time and has been through a lot so there’s not too many things she can’t relate to, so this is your more likely outcome. She’s compassionate and quick to validate your feelings by expressing her own, and offering advice if that’s what you want/need.
30: What makes your OC defensive quickest?
The quickest way to pick a fight with her is to criticize her and Darien’s relationship (or really just her romantic life in general). She’s defensive about this for a long time, probably longer than she should be. But she’s more open to talking about it as the years go on. It’ll always be a sensitive subject to her though, so it’s better to tread lightly or let her bring it up first.
She’s also defensive over necromancy and how it isn’t inherently evil. She’s willing to discuss the logistics and potential immorality of it but accusing her of being immoral simply for practicing it is a quick way to get her on the defensive.

Note
I got a lot for you, you don't have to answer all of these 💀. 2, 4, 8, 21, 35, and 50 for Jilly. 3, 7, 10, 41, and 64 for Valkya. And 6, 7, 14, 25, and 52 for Mike. And a large fry 😁
I FINALLY DID ITTTTTT IM SORRY FOR THE WAIT!! all under the cut bcs ofc its LONG
JILLY
2. What are their favourite possessions? Why? (sentimentality, history, price, etc)
-She has 2 stuffed ferrets shes had since she was little :) she calls them stinker and slinker and she loves them so much. Also a collection of friendship bracelets she pretty much makes matching ones for everyone she likes and wears them in rotation.
4. Are they a good gift-giver? What do they tend to give as gifts? -Jilly LOVES gift giving bcs she naturally hoards and steals shit and then ends up with too much shit, so what better to do with it than give to friends?? You're likely to get anything she can swipe that reminds her of u. Tries to vary it to suit whoever shes giving a gift to but her go to is something like stuffed animals and jewelry bcs thats what she likes best
8. What does their dream house look like?
-She would like an at home gym with giant climbable pillars and hoops and obstacles, or just a house with a lot of land and forest she can run around in. She's also way a fan of hidden passages and secret hiding places, anything she can snoop and weasel around in. No scary basement tho
21. What’s their ideal date like?
-Carnival or theme park! Anything with lots of action and noise and prizes. Shed want to play all the games for hours straight and go on all the biggest rides.
36. Do they trust easily? What would you have to do to earn their trust?
-Yes she trusts easily :/ mayhaps too easily. Her way of thinking is innocent until proven guilty and even then, it takes a looooot to make her start to doubt someone because she wants to believe everyone has good intentions. To earn her trust, being nice to her and other ppl is the easiest way, but she's also prone to trust you if you seem secure somehow or just in charge like a position of authority.
50. Why would they be a good partner for a road trip?
-Snacks. On demand. She packs every snack and drink you could ever hope for and stashes up on blankets and pillows too. The type to wanna play my spy and car games and to sing along really loudly to music. WILL stick her head out the window sometimes. Will want to stop at every roadside attraction. Just for fun the reason she might be a bad roadtrip partner is that she talks a lot. And will be loudly singing and sticking her head out the window. And after a while the car will start to smell vaguely of ferret and she might shed.
--------
VALKYA
3. Do they get jealous easily? If so, what usually causes it?
-Shes really not a jealous person at all, especially not romantically. Shes pretty chill in general. Even so, some times she gets jealous of all the time other people get to spend with Naryu. If Valkya feels like someone else is being prioritized over her shes more likely to act out like a baby ggdghdf
7. What’s their “type”? What romantically attracts them to another person?
-Women who could kill her and men who are pathetic, but shes open to anything. Has a thing for nerds, goths, vampires, werewolves, short people, assassins, and most importantly people who are easy to fluster. She will bone anything that moves
10. What’s a simple thing that brings them joy?
-Finishing a good book, especially a series. When shes not in life threatening danger or fucked up out of her mind shes a pretty avid reader. She likes having the free time to sit around a fireplace and snuggle up with a book, though she'll deny it if caught and say she doesnt know how to read hgfdgsd.
41. What would they dress up as for Halloween?
-Demetria 💀 shed just steal her clothes and stretch TF out of em gsdgdfhsd. Or dress up as herself bcs who needs originality when your famous?
64. Describe what their social media would be like.
- Random memes from the last century all mixed up, millions of selfies and nudes out of nowhere. Drunk posting at 4 am and getting into fights w Dem over dumb shit, subtweeting everyone to start drama. Has thousands of followers and does giveaways of shit she finds lying around her house for no reason but shes bored
-----------------
MIKE
6. Do they prefer to have a big social circle, or a few close friends?
-Shed prefer to have a few close friends as long as they ride or die. Most likely die tho. Shes desperate for frienship shell stalk someone to get to know them really well and then delude herself into thinking theyr besties. Sometimes it doesnt go well but she still gets a meal out of it even if shes sad
7. What’s their “type”? What romantically attracts them to another person?
-Someone who looks like they're up for fun! Really into alt fashion and people who seem like they dont give a shit. Confidence, fighters, rebels, anyone she can party hard with. Likes people who are interesting and is especially interested in befriending other killers, they have so much to bond about!
14. Who do they go to in a crisis/emergency? Any particular reason why they choose that person?
-Probably Zeke tbh. Since she turned him hes like the only other vamp besides prim she knows and hes always pretty level headed. Probably goes to him for advice on how to make friends and hes like “maybe dont break into ppls houses and drain their victims out of nowhere :/” and shes like “that was ONE TIME and it worked!!”
25. What are their dreams like?
-All chaotic! Theres seldom ever a storyline or anything, just bright colors and random things happening and an overlying sense of panic or dread. Like those images you look at to understand what having a stroke is like, everything is off color and melting and shes usually running away from something. Typically nightmares but about nothing in particular, just disconnected sounds shapes and figures.
52. What topic should nobody bring up around them, lest the other person be subject to a massive ramble/rant?
-ANYTHING to do with twilight. She knows everything about it. Has seen and read is 12 times over and can quote it directly at any time, do not attempt to argue twilight with her. Diehard team Edward forever. If your tied up and somehow the topic of it comes up just pray she kills you soon bcs she will go on for hours and bring out her annotated copies and force you to go through them with her.

interrogation one — jillian mercer.
Well, shit. Jillian had never liked Ismail — in fact, she hated him, and hated Joja. That was no secret to anyone in the Valley. But to have someone die, especially so suddenly: that kind of thing shook a town, and it shook the people in it. She was no exception: she’s a little stunned and a little shaky, and she was going to ignore Mayor Lewis’ pleas for voluntary interviews until her parents pressure her to talk to him. It’d be better if you did, Jilly Bean. You’ll feel better about it. As if she was traumatized by the death of Ismail Haq rather than death in general. As if she’d done anything wrong.
one. where were you on the night of tuesday, october 6?
Her hands are shaking and her heart is practically beating out of her chest. Breathe, Jillian, breathe. Why is she so freaked out over this? Maybe it’s because she knows the obvious:  there had been no one in town more vocal of their hatred of JojaMart than Jillian Mercer. And she’d been a little ... volatile recently. Especially with Mayor Lewis interviewing her, after her whole spat with Sasha. But this was a freak accident, right? He probably was drunk and fell or something. No one could have hurt him, right? Her voice is quiet when she finally speaks.:
“ I was at the saloon. I’m there pretty much every night. I finished off my shift at the store, and then went over there for it to open. I stayed there until closing, when I just went home.  ”
two. can anyone confirm your whereabouts?
Who the fuck was at the saloon? She tries to remember. Really, she tries. But between entry and exit, lines blur. She’d had far too much to drink, which wasn’t exactly unusual. But telling the mayor she didn’t remember would certainly rouse more suspicion. Her tone is weaker still, now, uncertain.
“ Sure. I mean, probably. Uh, plenty of people were at the saloon. I don’t really remember who else was there specifically. But ... I go there every night. I got served drinks. People saw me. It’s not like I’m standing in the middle of the fucking saloon like hey, everyone, Jillian’s here! Someone must have. Seen me, I mean. Finley was probably there. You can ask them.  ”
three. what was the nature of your relationship with mr. haq?
There it was. Of course. The million dollar question. She can’t even look at Lewis as she answers, still painfully quiet as she stumbles around her response, picking at a hangnail. It hurts, but it’s a better distraction than the thump, thump, thump that’s increasing her heart rate. She has to remind herself to breathe. You didn’t do anything. It was possible no one did anything. But ... she had a bad feeling about this. Suddenly, it spills out, a little louder than she intended:
“ I think you know the answer to that. I’m not gonna — I’m not gonna elaborate on how much I hated him, okay? Hating someone isn’t evidence. This is for evidence. Did you know he fucking hit me with his car? Yeah. That about sums up my interactions with him. But that doesn’t mean anything. Like — not to speak ill of the dead or anything, but plenty of people didn’t like that guy. It doesn’t mean I wanted him ... it doesn’t mean he deserved to die. I didn’t do anything. ”
four. how often did you interact with him?
She feels like kicking herself. What kind of answer was that? Her head is spinning, and she takes a long beat of silence before she answers. It’s truthful, but she worries it might not be enough. She already looks like a mess.
“  Not that often. I mean — it’s not like I would have ... gone to Joja Mart. But we were around in the same town and everything. And ... things were stressful between them and the store. We were pretty limited, in how we spoke. You know, other than when he hit me with his fucking car.  ”
You said that already, dumbass.
five. when did you last see him?
Was he in the saloon that night? Was he? She doesn’t remember much, that much is evident from her alibi. She tries to wrack her brain for the last time she’s certain she saw him: of course, it had been when she’d been gloating over the Mercer’s victory over Joja Mart. Not exactly a good look. Her foot taps on the floor.
“  He was throwing some kind of tantrum in the middle of town over Joja. No, wait. I think — I think he was also at the saloon, that night. Maybe? But I obviously wouldn’t have talked to him. But I’m not sure if he was there for long, or not. I was occupied with trying to have a nice night. Like, I guess — full disclosure, I was kind of drunk. So, I don’t know. Don’t ... quote me on it. Or I guess do. That’s what this is. — Sorry. I’m a little ... rattled.  ”
six. did anything seem out of the ordinary either in town or in your interactions with mr. haq prior to tuesday, october 6?
Ismail. He’d been weird. Of course he’d been weird, given the circumstances. But — what else constituted as out of the ordinary?
“  Uh, I mean — yeah? He’s always seemed pretty stone faced and stuffy or formal or whatever, but he was kicking lamp posts and stuff. Maybe he had a breakdown or something and just ... keeled over from stress. Nothing anyone else did, though. No one seemed ... different. Other than him, I mean. ”
seven. do you know anyone else who might have information pertaining to mr. haq’s death?
Finally, she looks at the mayor, putting sweaty palms atop the table instead of nervously playing with them in her lap. She looks a little frazzled, but her tone is genuine as she speaks with real advice. As much as she hated Ismail.... she wanted to help, really.
“  I mean — I don’t. As for ... if he was at the saloon, or who was there or whatever, anyone who was drinking water all night and might have better recollection than I do. I don’t know anything. I didn’t ...  ”
... do anything. See anything. Hear anything. Great defense.
eight. do you have any other insights or information about the case that you wish to share?
She takes a deep breath, hands falling back into her lap for a moment before she stands up, pushing her chair back to leave before she can even answer the next question. Her eyes point at the floor.
     “  No. No, I don’t. ”

Jilly gets together part one
Lily was looking forward to this week sense the start of the summer break. She had invited the Maurders over to her house to stay a week. They had gotten to be close friends the last part of the school year and she didn’t like the idea of not seeing them all summer, especially James, so she sent an owl to her parents asking them if it was alright if they came. They were excited to meet some of her friends so told her that they could come. When they arrived, her heart skipped a beat when she saw James. He was impossibly handsome. She couldn’t help but blush a little. She introduced james, peter, remous, and Sirius to her parents and showed them to the guest room. She had hoped that petunia would have been here to meet them as well but petunia set up a week long sleep over with one of her friends because “Why would I want to meet any more freaks like you?”
After they unpacked Mrs. Evans asked the boys if they wanted to go with her to pick up some groceries and snacks that they would like. James, peter, and Sirius said they would be delighted, Remus said he would rather hang back and chill with lily. Lily knew it was because of the full moon a couple of days ago.
“what do you say evans, fancy a game of chess?”
“sure, I do have to warn you though, we don’t have wizards chess so you might be a little disappointed you have to move the pieces yourself and such.”
“it is alright, I will stomp you either way.”
“probably”
They set up the chess board and started playing. They talked about how school and how it is nice they are finally friends.
“there is only one downside to it though.” Lily said with out really meaning to say it out loud but at least it wasn’t infront of all the boys.
“oh yeah? What is the down side?” replied remus with a little hesitation.
“If I tell you something promise not to tell anyone? Not a soul, not james, not sirius, not peter, no one?”
A little frightened remus responded “sure”
“I have a huge crush on James, my timing suck because he doesn’t feel the same way anymore, I mean he use to drive me nuts with the asking me out all the time. I use to loth him and thought he was a real jerk and bully. Then we got to know each other and everything but now he doesn’t even act like he is interested in me anymore.”
remus busts up laughing “lils, he is madly in love with you, I just told him to try and move on, give you space to come to terms with things and everything.”
Lily blushed “oh, well thank you for telling me and for giving such great advice to james but now what do I do?”
“just like in this game, it is your move.”
“I guess I need to think about what that move will be.” Lily said as she moved one of her chess pieces.
They talked a bit more and joked about how james would react when he was on the receiving end of a love declaration. Their chess match finished up shortly after the others got home from the store. Lily had everything planned out on how she was going to talk to him. She was a little nervous but she had practice her speech on remus. He laughed the whole time but said it sounded good and that james was going to flip out. After gathering her nerves she asked james if they could talk in private. remus immediately giggled. This giggle earned him a death glare from lily and a curious look from the rest of the boys. Mrs. Evans was to busy in the kitchen to notice. Lily lead james upstairs into the guest room that he and the other boys would be sleeping in and as soon as they crossed through the door way she threw herself at him and began passionately kissing him. He pulled her closer and returned the kiss before breaking away long enough to ask her “are you sure about this?” Her hands slid into his back pocket and grabbed his wand which she used to shut the door. “I have never been more sure about anything in my life” With that he kissed her like she was the last breath of air for his drowning lungs. They made their way to one of the beds as she removed his shirt and exposed his defined muscles from the long hours of quidditch practice. She explored the terrain of his torso with her hands and pulled him on top of her. He began kissing her neck and undoing some of the buttons on her blouse when there was knock on the door they barley heard before Mrs. Evans came in. with a start james jumped up and pulled his shirt on. He then looked at the floor and started messing with his hair as he mumbled sorry to mrs. Evans. Lily sat up and started to do up the buttons that had been undone. “I hope I am not interrupting anything dears?” “oh you know just a really good make out session.” Gruffed lily as james blushed and sighed.
“well, dinner will be ready in about 20 minutes, I hope I didn’t kill the mood”
“oh it has been adequately extinguished” said lily.
“good, see you two down for dinner in twenty minutes”
“yes mom”
“yes mrs. Evans.” As she left they looked at each other and laughed.
“next time you take my wand to shut the door be sure to lock it as well” said James.
“oh, you noticed that?”
“I notice everything you do lily, I must say I am happy with what happened just now, minus the interruption, but what made you decide to lure me up here for a make out session? I thought…”
“I don’t james, I have a huge crush on you” James face lite up like a Christmas tree. “You do? Sense when?”
“ yes, you see it started after we became friends this year, you were so nice and thoughtful. It almost scared me when you didn’t ask me out to the last Hogsmeade weekend like you always to. I thought I had missed my chance, but then I talked to remus today and he told me everything. How you still loved me and how he told you to give me space and that I would come around.”
“Remus’ advice worked then?”
“for both of us, I think.”
“what do you mean you think?”
“well I followed his advice and made a move, but it seems maybe it was the wrong move considering you havn’t as….”
“LILY EVANS WILL YOU GO OUT WITH ME?”
“YES!!” James rushed over and picked her up and kissed her. He twirled around a bit before putting her down and kissed her forehead “you have made me the happiest person on the planet right now.”
“wait till you have some of the dinner mom had prepared, it will lift your spirits even more.” “ yeah um…. Before I go down to dinner I think I should take a shower, you know to cool down.”
“yeah, cooling down is a good idea. Go for a walk in the wood later?”
“absolutely”
should I write more? message me if you think I should?

In The Light               Jimmy Page         Fan Fiction                 Part 51
Tumblr media
Part 51   Backstage
After Jimmy left, Jill was getting some water at the fountain in the hallway. There was still quite a crowd of people backstage, some relaxing, some talking, drinking, some working there. A few young girls were in the hall at the backstage area, staring at Jimmy as he walked down the hall with the guys. A couple of them came over to Jill, in a shy way. One of them confronted her, “Hi, excuse me,…we’ve seen you before in the news with Jimmy a lot.  It must be so incredible being his girlfriend, how do you keep yourself from climbing all over him, every moment ?”
Jill said, “Well,… we’ve been together awhile.  So I can control myself now a tiny bit.   But, my advice is,  don’t look directly into his eyes. It has a mesmerizing effect that will cause you to become completely helpless.  And to go along with anything he wants. That holds true for a lot of handsome guys. Don’t let them con you. Let them wait awhile, you’re in charge. You wait until you know they really care about you, a lot. Ladies, we don’t just give it away. Because you’ll have plenty of heartache and crying later, if you do. Not all guys are honest, a lot of them just want to enjoy your body and couldn’t give a rat’s ass about you. And then, never call you again. The challenge is over. Get it ? Sorry to get all mom-ish on you. Just trying to protect you.” Jill said.
One of the girls answered, “No, it’s not mom-ish. Whatever you have to say, I’m gonna listen. Because you certainly must know what you’re talking about, you caught Jimmy Page. Who else would I listen to, before you ?”
Jill just smiled sweetly at them and walked backstage.
In a few minutes, Jim and the others were back. They stood near the doorway still talking for awhile.  Meanwhile, as the small group was dissipating, some groupie women, not the girls with whom Jill had spoken, but women, began chatting up Jimmy. They were soon hanging onto him, being extremely pushy.  No one knew how they even had gotten in there, Jim certainly didn’t give them his permission. And he hated that, so he kept gently moving himself backwards and away. And ultimately, he fully walked away. They still hung about backstage, trying to blend in.
Jimmy went and sat on the bench next to his bandmates and Jill was among the folks there too. She had her back to the situation and had not seen the women badgering Jimmy. A few minutes later, he came over to Jill, squeezed in next to her and pulled her into his lap, cuddling her. They were kissing a little and talking, looking into each other’s face, intently.
About an hour later, as Jill was standing and speaking to Linda, one of those groupies hanging onto Jim earlier, approached Jill. The woman said quietly next to Jill’s ear, “You don’t deserve him.”
Jill was startled and replied, “I don’t ? Oh ok, bye.” and started to walk away.
But as Jill walked away, the woman said, “Where ya goin ?” and grabbed Jill roughly by the back of her shirt and also by the hair.  She tried yanking Jill physically, back into the conversation.  Within a split second, the security guys were on the crazy lady like melted marshmallow crème.
Two of the guys pulled the woman immediately off Jill. Julian grabbed Jill and lifted her up bridal style, and carried her like that quickly away from the situation. He brought her to a bench against a wall and placed her down safely. The first two roadies had lifted the crazy lady, by means of under her arms, and carried her out of the room. They had been trained to get someone like this safely into a cab, and have her taken home.
Julian was a little frantic from the close call of nearly failing to keep Jill safe.  He said, “I’m so sorry things went that far, Jilly. I had my eyes on you and that lunatic, for a few minutes there. I knew something could be brewing, and I was watching for that. And when she reached for you, we all moved right in.” he said. Jill was leaning down with her elbows on her knees and Julian was leaning down over her. He smoothed her hair, sweetly, making sure she was calmed, and kept stroking her back and her hair as an attempt to comfort her. He let go, and they stood up, talking, as a stage hand placed an ice water into Jill’s hand.
Jimmy saw the incident from about 30 feet away and saw how fast the security guys resolved it.  He rushed over to Jill and took her into his arms. He said, “I can’t believe she did that !  I am so sorry, Jill.  Are you hurt ? Or upset ?”
“No, I’m fine. You don’t need to say sorry. You can’t help it that women are wild about you and out of control. She almost ripped my favorite top, though. And tore out a small handful of my hair, ouch. The nerve.” she said. “It’s because I didn’t obey my own rules. And that rule is, “Never turn your back on someone crazy.“  Jimmy laughed lightly and hugged her closely and kissed her. “You are so warped sometimes !” referring to her statement, and put his hand behind her back and hugged her, pulling her face against his chest. They stayed like that for a while with his other hand behind her head. He said,  “Don’t worry, baby, we’re gonna keep you safe.  We should probably head outa here now. What do you think ?”
Meanwhile, Julian watched and felt so envious and jealous of Jimmy. When he rescued Jill, he got a chance to hold her body next to himself and carry her for a few minutes. It was more than glorious for Julian. He’d been dying to touch her and feel her warmth against him. He had no trouble carrying her, she felt light as air to him.  And when he had put her down and felt her beautiful hair in his hands, he was now craving her, more than ever. But, how was he going to get to try with Jimmy around all the time. And one idea which crept into his mind was to keep a close watch on Jimmy. The plan being, that since Jimmy had such a long established eye for beautiful women, how long was he gonna go without trying to sneak in a cheat. Against Jill. So many good looking ladies around the scene all the time, how long could Jimmy resist, with a history like his ? Once Julian could observe him fucking up, he would quickly tattle tail it over to Jill. Then she’d be done with Jim, available and possibly fall into the loving comfort of Julian’s arms. And he would be there to comfort her immediately, take advantage of her vulnerability. Sounds like a plan.
The next day was their day off.  Jill had arranged to spend the day with her friends from NY.  Jimmy joined them not for the entire day, but just to the lunch at a pub in NY. Jill was so thrilled to see them all again and Jimmy enjoyed the visit and lunch with them too. He picked up the bill for everyone, and also handed them each the tickets for tomorrow night’s concert. The friends were absolutely blown away by Jimmy’s generous present and his treating them for lunch. They all hugged him and thanked him whole heartedly for the gift. His attempt was actually made mostly for Jill, from his heart. She accompanied him here for this tour, devoting herself totally to his needs. The absolute least he could do for her, he felt, was to spend time with her and her friends and offer them concert seats. Excellent seats too, right in front of him and in front of where Jill would sit normally, as well.

The idiots sleep in a zombie town
So where we last left our intrepid heroes they were making camp in the ghost town of Donkey's Rest. Their slumber had been interrupted by Nitahn's alarm spell going off and alerting them to the presence of a shadow. Jake carried the battle, but when the shadow died wth a hiss an answering hiss came from outside, and in multitudes. There were more of them.
The group put their resources together regarding what they know about shadows. The party decides to get the fuck out of dodge, possibly setting the town on fire on the way out. Vera and Jake go on watch to open the doors and later settle on the top of he cart in theory. Jilly settled on top of the cart, with everyone else following on foot. Vera and Jilly spot shambling figures on the street, Vera was like 'Oh, right, they're not using their bodies anymore."
Battle starts, with the single zombie running their way, the other two heading their way. Something kicks the door to the stable open from the inn. Vera throws her torch and sets the inn on fire, illuminating a shadowy figure inside. Nitahn turned the cart, Magnolia successfully turned the single zombie, the pair of zombies, and the shadow.
Jilly takes some pot shots, Vera falls in the mud trying to get on the cart, everyone successfully gets on the cart, Vera fails at climbing on the top of the cart (Both of them are natural 1's. It would've been -4s but Vera had taken her armor off.) Nitahn gets the donkeys moving while Vera gives up climbing on top and starts detecting evil, spotting two more presences up ahead. Nitahn directs the cart around the zombie, with Jake and Jasna getting attacks of opportunity. Together combined with Jilly's pot shots they kill that one.
(Cody had a realization that all of these zombies are probably shadows.)
Two more shadows start chasing the cart, Magnolia spots them. Magnolia turned them both right the fuck back. On top of the cart Jilly starts playing ('I've seen better days', a Jilly Jim original.) Vera detects a moderate evil presence ahead, Jake is able to spot two zombies and a large, swirling mass ahead. Nitahn directs the donkeys to run the zombies over but takes 4 strength damage from passing through the shadows.
As we approach the edge of town we pass by two more zombies that Jasna tries to hit on the way past, and far behind us the inn burns. No one spots two shadows between the cart and the edge of town, but Vera's detect evil spots them. Jake casts magic missile on one while Jilly keeps playing his mandolin. The two shadows fly for the donkeys, but they donkeys pass past. One shadow gets a good hit on Vera. A real good hit, 6 strength damage good. It's like the shadow reaches for her heart and actually gets hold for her shadow for a second.
As they approach the edge of town the houses become more sparse but zombies come out after the cart. Towards the edge of town there's a large grouping of zombies stand in the way, six of them. (So we're up to like, what, 11 zombies and possibly 11 shadows? Fuck this town.) Magnolia climbs up on top of the cart and turns five of the six undead away. The zombie goes for Jasna and the three wraiths move to catch up, with two catching up but unable to attack. Nitahn and Vera calm the donkeys and nyoom the fuck out. The shadows give some chase, but are left behind. As we leave behind the town we billowing smoke come from the burning inn.
The cart stops and Jasna falls off, Magnolia tries to climb down and falls down. Jasna makes a joke about taking dirt naps which causes Vera to laugh hysterically. It's been a long day. Jake drives the cart while everyone else sleeps in or on the wagon. From the east we see a pillar of smoke from the Inn that Vera set on fire.
Party consensus: Fuck that town.
They travel more along the roadway finding a clearing eventually along. Vera spotted evil with her spookyvision. Mayhem went to spot the evil and they find three more evil talismans. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners. Like somebody tried to carve a bowtie out of bone. Magnolia could tell they were from a medium sized creature, while Jilly could find they were basically negative prayer necklace. Like before, the purpose of the amulets are to incite dark thoughts.
Jake wants to try one on and see if it works with the rest of the party is like 'oh fuck no'. Jilly looks around and is able to see that the area has seen many fights. Chunks of daggers, finger bones, ect. He finds a few copper and a dagger.
They continue on the way and eventually get to the next town. Jilly spots a town ahead and the possibility of a forge by the mountain. They head into town and local people look surprised to see them. Nitahn tries to find the least expensive inn because he's cheap. In the town of Donkey's Hat there are three inns: Donkey's haberdashery, Haul's rest, and a dwarven bar. Jilly and Jake head towards the dwarven bar while Vera and Jasna head for the haberdashery.
Jake and Vera have a banter, where she wanted to see Jake get into the dwarf bar, he pointed out that it's nice to not have his heart hurt, Vera says it's nice that her arm doesn't hurt, then they wish each other good healing.
The two go to the dwarven bar and fit in with Jake limboing in. Jilly puts 10 gold down on the bar, Jake puts down 11, and they're instantly welcomed.
The other four head to the haberdashery and get rooms and baths. Jasna asks about the forges and tells the innkeeper about the forge, the dwarves. She also tells him about he path they took up: From Horah to Evil Donkey to Dead Donkey to Donkey's rest to here, Donkeys hat. She tells him about the gargoyle and the town of undead.
Jilly asks the dwarven bartender about the Dwarven town and gets a dwarf's perspective. Jake asks about weapons and gets a dwarf's advice and is told to head to the forge.
Jake and Jilly show up drunk the next morning and they pool information, heading to the dwarves. The Dwarves inspect the silver and seem to be interested in obtaining it.          They eventually call craftsmen out. After Nitahn asks about silvered steaks they're like 'uhhh' and call out a priest who does a vampire check on everyone. Magnolia casts comprehend language, freaking the dwarves out. But they all pass the vampire check, and Nitahn passes the werewolf check. Jake comes out undisguised and that leads to the dwarves freaking out about now there's fucking drow.
The craftmen stay and the priest gets out to talk with the king. The priest comes back and asks for them to have a conversation with the king. The group asks if they can send a representative and Jake volunteers, having the group all yell out 'NO' inunison. They send Jilly, Vera, and Magnolia in. After traveling for a while in the darkness they arrive in the throne room with the King and a second bearded dwarf. Vera politely introduces the group in a proper fashion, surprising the King a bit.
They converse for a bit regarding the silver that the idiots brought, like 'oh hey where did you get this and is evil going to be coming our way? What manner of evil are you aiming to fight?" And the group answered appropriately.  Vera very adamantly was like 'We're going to fight whatever evil comes our way, nothing would give me more pleasure than using this to attack them."
Jilly commits a faux pass by asking the King if the goods would be good quality. The surrounding dwarves were like 'How Dare!" But the King assured him and didn't take offense.
Meanwhile Jake is shapeshifted into Nitahn and is threatening to wrestle him while Jasna is talking to the craftsmen.
The decision is made: The dwarves get to keep whatever silver is left and the party will get silvered and masterwork'd weapons. Jasna wants to stay at the dwarves and learn some stuff, the rest of the party returns to town for a week off (which is great since Vera, Nitahn, and Jake still have to recover some strength points)

Today's advice from your Goth Auntie
Stop clenching your jaw. Have a snack, take your meds.
You aren't perfect, and that's GOOD. (No one is perfect.)
The demon you summoned has asked for blankets, because apparently it needs time in a blanket fort.

Inside Choices | Red Carpet Diaries
Red Carpet Diaries is here! 💃 Our newest Choices book is all about the glamorous (and sometimes not-so-glamorous) world of Hollywood. The path to stardom isn't easy, but with a little luck and the help of your friends, you might just make it to the big screen...
Longtime fans of Pixelberry know of our second game, Hollywood U. HWU has similar gameplay to the original High School Story game, but is set at a university where you learn how to make it in Hollywood. Last April, we released the final quest for HWU. We're really happy that we got to share the adventures of Ethan, Addison, and the rest of the HWU cast with all of you.
Red Carpet Diaries is an all-new and different story than its predecessor. But, we wanted to included a nod to some of our beloved characters from Hollywood U, so you'll be seeing a few familiar faces in Red Carpet Diaries. At the same time, the Red Carpet Diaries team wanted to create a fresh, distinct story of fame and fortune that new Pixelberry fans can get into, too...
To learn more about the new book, I talked to the team behind Red Carpet Diaries -- and as a bonus, Eric, the producer of Hollywood U, as well!
First thing's first. Give us the scoop on Red Carpet Diaries! What's it all about?
Jilly: It’s a thrilling tale of your first job in data entry! Will you finish that spreadsheet on time… or will you have to install Excel on your home computer? Kidding, obviously -- it’s a glamorous story of a rising actress’s first days in Hollywood, her path to fame… and obviously her steamy romantic opportunities (you are in the land of the professionally beautiful people, after all!).
How is Hollywood U linked to Red Carpet Diaries? How is it distinct? And will I get to meet any HWU faves, like Addison and Ethan?
Andrew: Red Carpet Diaries can be best seen as a companion story to Hollywood U, something like a spin-off. It’s not a direct adaptation like HSS; instead, it’s an original self-contained story with its own cast of main characters, but set in the same universe as Hollywood U. HWU fans should definitely expect to see a lot of familiar faces pop up (won’t spoil who!), and we’ve worked in some really fun interactions with that cast.
Here's a question for both Eric and the Red Carpet Diaries team: Both Hollywood U and Red Carpet Diaries depict the path to stardom. To you, what does this type of tale mean to you?
Eric: A path-to-stardom tale is all about potential! I love a main character with nothing to their name but a bag of Cheetos and a dream. It can be really inspiring to see that character start to realize that dream. In Hollywood U, it felt particularly rewarding to have your character’s campus and entourage grow the more famous they became. Envisioning yourself as a star is one thing; finally impressing Thomas Hunt is life.
Jilly: In a lot of ways, Red Carpet Diaries is a classic coming-of-age story, just in a much more glamorous setting. You’re facing the same kinds of challenges any young person would: Can you achieve your dreams, make new friends, and hack it in a new town? But of course that town is Hollywood, so there’s also some seriously awesome wish fulfillment built in!
The glitz and glam of Hollywood, the sweet outfits... there's a lot Red Carpet Diaries has to offer. What are you most excited for readers to encounter?
Jilly: Seriously, the outfits in this book are EVERYTHING. I need to be able to buy a “for me” version of at least half of them. I only wouldn’t buy the rest in real life because I don’t attend that many galas. Or, you know… any. Fashion aside, though, I had so much fun writing the side characters. Since the setting is Hollywood, they can be truly over the top! I want to spend an entire book hanging out with your neighbor Gloria--I feel like she has some seriously interesting stuff going on when she’s not hanging out with you.
Who's date-able in Red Carpet Diaries? Come on, spill the beans.
Jilly: The options are SO GOOD. You can ship with your megawatt costars (yes, plural!), the literal boy next door (who also happens to be a hilarious standup), the up-and-coming assistant director whose talent is only outshone by how incredible she looks in club attire… and yes, I might be partial, but I would say yes to ALL of those options.
Any final advice or tips for readers before they step into Hollywood?
Jilly: Forget tabloids, this is going to be where you find your fashion inspiration for the next few months!
Choosing my #OOTD, like, right now. To those reading along: Can you make it in Hollywood? Find out in Red Carpet Diaries, out now!

Cathryn Hein
Tumblr media
Cathryn Hein is a best-selling author of rural romance and romantic adventure novels, a Romance Writers of Australia Romantic Book of the Year finalist, and a regular Australian Romance Reader Awards finalist.
A South Australian country girl by birth, she loves nothing more than a rugged rural hero who’s as good with his heart as he is with his hands, which is probably why she writes them! Her romances are warm and emotional, and feature themes that don’t flinch from the tougher side of life but are often happily tempered by the antics of naughty animals. Her aim is to make you smile, sigh, and perhaps sniffle a little, but most of all feel wonderful.
Tumblr media
Rocking Horse Hill (A Levenham Love Story Book 1) By Cathryn Hein Buy on Amazon
Cathryn lives Newcastle, Australia with her partner of many years, Jim. When she’s not writing, she plays golf (ineptly), cooks (well), and in football season barracks (rowdily) for her beloved Sydney Swans AFL team.
Cathryn’s latest release is EDDIE AND THE SHOW QUEEN, book five in her popular Levenham Love Story series.
What are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?
Riders By Jilly Cooper OBE
Riders by Jilly Cooper
What an eye-opener this book was. All those horses! All that upper-class naughtiness! That promiscuous but oh-so-sexy cad Rupert Campbell-Black! It was Riders and Cooper’s other early books that had me on a desperate hunt for Australian equivalents but, sadly, I could find none. I knew then that I would have to write my own, so it was a bit of a shock to discover my stories turned out nothing like Cooper’s.
A Place In The Hills By Michelle Paver
A Place in the Hills by Michelle Paver
It was probably more a combination of reads (see above), but I suspect this book is the one that cemented my desire to write romance. Everything about it is romantic, from the opening line, “It was noon on the Day of Blood when he first saw her” to the south of France setting, the forbidden love of both the historical and contemporary characters, and the kántharos - or chalice, that binds them all.
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
I signed up for Dragon Anywhere, a dictation software that I can use on my phone or tablet and works as long as I have an internet connection. It’s $20 a month and such a handy thing. I can dictate at home or when I’m out and about, and it’s quicker than note-taking or typing. Once I’ve relayed the words, I just tell the app to email the document to me. Easy.
There is a learning curve with dictation but the more you do it the easier it becomes. My goal is to write the first draft of an entire novel with it. So far, I’ve only managed the occasional chapter, and notes and blog posts. I’ll get there though.
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
It reminded me why I write – because it brings me joy.
One of the books I’m most proud of is Wayward Heart and I wrote that just for me. It wasn’t contracted and I was resigned that it was unlikely to appeal to a publisher if I did shop it, which meant there was absolutely no pressure during its creation. I could make it whatever I wanted. So I did.
I love that book. It was written with absolute delight and I think that shows in the finished story. Wayward Heart was picked up by Harlequin Harper Collins and is loved by readers too.
Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?
I’m going to go with an oft-quoted one, which I think belongs to Nora Roberts – you can’t edit a blank page. Because it’s true, you can’t. Even the worst day’s writing can be turned around.
My process is to edit as I go, which means I’m always rewriting. Some days getting that raw page down can be incredibly hard (other days it can pour out fast and near-perfect – if only there were more of those… sigh). The words will be awful and wrong and the doubt-demon on my shoulder will start sniggering and telling me how terrible I am, and I’ll wonder why I’m bothering. Then tomorrow will see me picking up those raw bones and rewriting them into something good.
I love that part of the process. Mind you, I’d love it even better if the words came out right the first time but you can’t have everything!
What is one of the best investments in a writing resource you’ve ever made?
My workstation. I love this desk, although in some ways it’s been a lot of trouble. I bought it when I was working on my second contracted book, Heart of the Valley. It’s a commercial corner workstation with loads of space that I can sprawl my stuff over and lets me keep important things like my notes and diary, and collection of fountain pens and books close at hand.
It’s been trouble because with my partner being in the military we moved house a lot and it’s not only big but an awkward shape, and not designed to be pulled apart. Getting it into its current position took some serious manoeuvring and resulted in a couple of wall dings. Worth it though.
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
I’m not sure this is particularly unusual, but I do like to have a theme song for each book. If I can find the right song, I’ll play it on a loop over and over, across the day until it fades into the background and I barely notice it.
What happens then is that the songbecomes so entrenched with writing the story that hearing it acts as a trigger. I hit ‘play’ and am immediately thrust into the story’s world again.
The biggest hassle is finding the right song, with the right feel.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
I walk a lot. Being a keen golfer, I tend to walk a fair bit anyway but about three or so years ago I developed an eye condition that stopped me driving and forced me to walk more. Walking time makes for fantastic thinking time.
Want to solve a plot problem? Go for a walk. Or have a shower. That works brilliantly too.
What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore?
I’ve never prescribed to the “write every day” school. I do write most days, but I don’t get het up if I don’t. That doesn’t mean I don’t think about writing or my storieson a daily basis. If I’m in the middle of a book, I’m thinking about that baby all the time, sometimes to the point of obsession. But writing every single day? Nah.
I treat writing like a job because it is my job, and take weekends off. Although I do tend to do admin type stuff and write blogs on weekend mornings.
As for what advice I’d give... Finish your stories.
Every book you write will teach you something – even if it’s not what to do. Don’t fret over those words being wasted because they won’t be. Some will go the high-jump, sure, but you’ll probably find yourself later mining those stories for gems. You might steal back a character, a dramatic scene, or a setting. Maybe you’ll recycle the premise but approach it in a different way.
I think I wrote six full-length novels before I was first contracted, and every one of those books have been raided and had parts of them recycled in some form since.
In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
I really want to say I’m better at limiting my time on social media but that would be a big fat fib. I’m trying though and I’m much better at scheduling now, which helps a lot.
Social media is an excellent way of keeping in touch with your readers and the writing community. It can also be a massive time suck and distraction from writing.
What marketing tactics should authors avoid?
I’m not sure I’d rule out anything specifically. Market according to your goals and target audience. Try things out. Make mistakes and learn from them. Although please, please do not be one of those people who friend or follow a person on social media, then once that person has friended or followed you back, you immediately reply with a ‘here’s my book’ message. Urgh. Even the thought makes me shudder. It’s stupid and rude and just about guarantees that person won’t touch your book.
What new realizations and/or approaches have helped you achieve your goals?
Readers don’t care who the publisher is. They just want your next book. Understanding that has allowed me to embrace self-publishing, in addition to releasing traditionally. Self-publishing means I can release more books for my readers in all sorts of lengths and formats. What fun!
When you feel overwhelmed or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
Walk. Take a shower. Or go and do something completely different, preferably something mundane or mind-numbing, like doing the dishes. It clears your head and lets creativity flow again.
If it’s a particularly stubborn or difficult issue, I book a get-together with my writer buddies so we can talk the problem through. Writer buddies are gold. I don’t know what I’d do without them.
Any other tips?
Make friends with other writers. Loved ones can be supportive, of course, but only writers truly understand the quirks of this weird life. They can empathise when you’re in knots over horror revisions or the bad cover the publisher wants you to accept or the scene you’ve ground to a halt over. And they can cheer with you and know how truly amazing it is when you’ve achieved something magical, like finished a book or reached a best-seller list or solved a thorny plot problem.
