We are only a handful (well more like two handfuls) of chapters away from pretty much this scene happening.😂😂😂

The first time Little Max levitates himself is 100% to magic himself onto Alec's shoulders and stay there for the rest of the day. Alec is too pleased to tell him it's dangerous (also he's a shadowhunter so his measure of "dangerous" is slightly off) meanwhile Magnus is jealous because that's his blueberry.

WIP Wednesday

(on a Saturday because who cares)

I have been tagged by the ever lovely @foodsies4me! And, speaking of Foodsies, if you aren't reading their two most recent WIPS - omg you are missing out. Their Daemon AU (Apollo: Blood Wars) is so twisty and delightful and full of foreshadowing for something I still can't figure out just yet, and I love that I'm still on the edge of my seat every chapter trying to guess what's coming next. Their Arranged Marriage AU (Bridges over Lakes of Salt) basically just went down my list of favorite tropes to check all of them off (Misunderstandings! Good Parabatai Jace Wayland! HoTI Alec!) and is incredible.

Anyways, a bit of of angst has been requested, so please have a little snippet from the final chapter of Laudanum:

The loft is bright, the windows flung wide to let in in the late afternoon sun, and the living room looks so completely normal that it takes Catarina three full heartbeats to turn her head towards the flung open doors to Magnus’ apothecary and understand what she’s seeing.  His heavy oak worktable has been hastily cleared, the several sheets of parchments underfoot and a shielded light-crystal wedged partly underneath the central bookcase speaking to the urgency in which it was done. Magnus sits askew, cross-legged, at the head of the table cradling Alec’s head in his lap. Alec himself is on his stomach, clearly hovering somewhere beneath full consciousness, eyes clenched shut in agony, his struggles weak and uncoordinated as small wordless noises of pain and confusion escape his mouth. Catarina catches only the barest glimpse of liquid gold eyes as Magnus bends over nearly in half, frantically trying to soothe the wounded nephilim. "Alexander-" the desperation in her best friend’s voice pierces her heart, “all shall be well, my love, I promise, just hold on, my darling, Catarina is coming - help is coming and all shall be well, I swear it, just hold on, my love, please,-" And Catarina jolts into action, berating herself already for even the momentary unforgivable pause. A bare two steps forward and she’s in the apothecary, pulling magic to her hands and taking an assessment of her patient.  Magnus doesn’t so much as look up, acknowledging her presence only with a slight change in the distressed jumble of promises and pleas as he promises Alec that help is here, he’ll be alright now, help is here. At the other side of the table is a second Shadowhunter, older than Alec - maybe in her early forties - with her hair pulled back in a complicated plait and lips pressed in a tight, white slash across her face.  The woman glances up to assess the new arrival, her muscles tensing in preparation to act until the meaning of the change in Magnus’ rambling words sinks in and she realizes precisely who Cat must be.  Twin trails run down both pale cheeks as she holds her Head’s hands to to the table, keeping him from injuring himself further. "Please," the woman begs, but Catarina has yet to stop moving.

I am low key obsessed with bridges Magnus being all elusive and suddenly this shadowhunters turns up who can feel his magic and start fussing over the fact that he needs more rest 😭 including a werewolf that now tracks his fav resident shadowhunters scent to make sure he’s okay and also by proxy knows Magnus isn’t resting enough 🙈

Also omg the trainees are coming!! So so so excited! The drawings being up in Alec’s kitchen of all his Spiral besties is sooo adorable too. It’s gonna be mayhem when they all come together (in good and kinda sad face ways)

Loved seeing Malec kinda get closer this chapter. Like calling each other by first names and Magnus being a bit more relaxed (?) around Alec. So many questions about Magnus magic orb feeling like home for Alec (i’m guessing this has something to do with the NY institute wards but also so much more)

Yayyy it’s almost double trouble Max’s time to shine!

I think I already told you this but yes this chapter and the next (and the one after that) is mostly about getting Malec closer and finding a balance where they're both still snarky, competitive little shits but that they aren't antagonistic to one another.

The trainees are coming, yes! It's going to be another few chapters but we're close! And then there will be their usual trainee chaos because they can't not be chaotic little menaces.

I'm delighted by how many people are enjoying Askel being his worrywart werewolf self because he refuses to be written out of the narrative no matter how many times I try to make him stay in the background lol.

I'm happy you're still enjoying the story, your asks never fail to bring a smile to my face! :D

Midnight scales and sunlit smiles - A short one-shot I made for @fuzdog for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024. I didn't expect that story to get as much love as it did.💜

Each time I can use a The Amazing Devil lyric as a title is a win in my book.

The Amazing Devil. I mostly keep it to song titles, but I do also write a lot while listening to their music.

A Sunday Afternoon

As the title suggests I wrote it in one afternoon. It was a Wednesday and not a Sunday though.

Bridges Over Lakes Of Salt closely followed by Apollo: Blood Wars neither of which I've managed to finish to date. I hope to finish at least one of the two in 2025, but we'll see.

Updated/worked on: Bridges over Lakes Of Salt with 79,234 words.

Yet Another Sapphire - 1445 words which is unusually short for me.

Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, although I also had a lot of fun writing from Catarina's POV!

Ragnor Fell, I feel like I just can't get his voice quite right.

Romantic pairing - not really any new pairings I want to explore

Friendship pairing - there are a couple of Raphael and Alec as friends fic I would love to start working on. The snark and salt is just too funny.

Overall it has to be a tie between Of Truths And Lies (even though I should probably edit it because it was one of the first fics I wrote and it shows) and Of Mistakes and Regrets (which suffers a similar fate).

If I pick a work from 2024 then it has to be Crow's no good very bad day

I have no idea. I checked on AO3 but it only counts the number of kudos on the works that were last updated in 2024, not the kudos received so I don't know.

23. Did you do any collaborative work this year?

Nothing that has been published yet, but I started writing something with a co-author that we plan to publish in 2025. (If everything goes well that is)

24. Did you write any gifts this year?

So Many! Partially because I had several people who prompted a bunny and I gifted the story to them when it became an actual fic. However, if we're only counting gift exchanges and so on, then I have four.

Twelve little kids went out to play - I wrote for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 as a gift for @fuzdog. This was and remains my scariest fic to write to date, solely because the trainees are the "main characters' and I was really worried I would annoy people because of that.

Midnight scales and sunlit smiles - A fic I also wrote for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 and that was also a gift for @fuzdog. This fic was fun to write because of how adorable tiny!dragon Alec is.

A Sunday Afternoon - My last of three Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 fics. This one was written for someone SandyWormbook and was surprisingly tricky to write for how short it is.

Through veils of mist and crashing seas - Yes this isn't the full title but the full title is ridiculous. Anyway, this fic was made for a Secret Santa-ish Gift Exchange called Gifting Gremlins and it was very fun even if I went slightly overboard with the metaphors in that one.

25. Did you receive any gifts this year?

I diiiiiid! Not as a gift exchange because for the Secret Santa I participated in I got an Alec-themed playlist (which was so goooood). But I got several gifts all of which were lovely and deserve some love so:

27. What do you listen to while writing?

Depends on what I want to write - angsty songs for angsty fics, happy songs for happy fics, and complete ridiculous chaos whenever the trainees are involved.

28. Favourite work you wrote this year?

I don't think I have a favourite, I like all of them. Most fun to write has to be Crow's no good very bad day just because of how ridiculous and unhinged his POV is.

29. Favourite line/passage you wrote this year?

"Are you from Mags' glitter?" Crow blinks. "What?" "Are you from Mags' glitter," the kid repeats, acting as if saying it a second time would make the words make any more sense. "What the fuck's a Mags?"

What can I say Crow's POV is delightfully unhinged.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

How much fun Catarina's POV is! I liked her on the show, but with how little we saw of her I wasn't certain I'd be able to ever write anything in her POV and yet it's so fun and easy.💜

17. Share your favorite opening line

My favorite opening line has to be for the trainee POV fic that I wrote for one of my FTH fics. It was just so ridiculous and funny that it still brings me joy. I’m adding the whole song Julian -one of the trainees- wrote just because it works better that way, but here it is:

21. What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?

Oh, I have several of these and yes they usually change the story either making it longer or changing the course for it entirely. In BOLOS/Bridges, Alec wasn’t supposed to get so close to the werewolves, but they all decided he needed some friends and told me to deal with it. So that has altered already quite a few chapters including the last one and the next one (that has been sitting finished but unedited in my drafts for weeks againavdbfjg’g)

In Apollo, Jace wasn’t supposed to find out about what happened with Alec and his daemon (nor was Izzy) so it also shifted some things later down the line, as in really shifted them. It’s why I haven’t updated that story really the past few months because I’m rewriting so much because of that choice he decided to insert himself in.

And, last but not least, in remember today you are loved I didn’t expect Catarina to have so much to say or for her POV to be quite this enjoyable, which is why the supposed to be a short fic ended up being longer than expected as well.

25. How did you recharge between fics?

I haven’t finished quite that many fics this year sadly - too many long WIPs that are too long. But! For me recharging between writing is being able to read or reread fics or books and draw/doodle whatever sparks my interest. I’m still not very good at it but I hope to get to a point where I feel confident enough I can draw my ridiculous gaggle of trainees.😊

30. What would you like to write next year?

Write or publish?😁

No, I have a couple of fics that are mostly ready and only need to be edited before I can start posting them - one of them being a collab fic with @to-the-stars-writing that of course stars dragon!Alec. I also have a social media/celebrity Malec fic I would love to start posting once I’ve made enough headway into the fic. (Yes, it’s the one I’m stealing your and other people’s usernames for😄)

Then, the obvious answers are also to hopefully try and finish the ongoing wips I already have because the fics I’m hoping to write are all on the longer side as well.

That said, fics I’m hoping to start writing/ working on:

What's the last wip you worked on and can we have a snippet?

The last WIP I’ve been working on is a celebrity Malec AU that I am writing because of you that I am having a surprising amount of fun with! I am generally not a fan of mundane AU’s and I certainly didn’t see myself writing one but alas here I am and it is pretty fun! Especially because I have shamelessly (with permission) stolen the tumblr and ao3 urls of several people to use as instagram/social media comments.😁😁😁

(I do miss my trainees though🥲.)

Anyway, here is a snippet you haven’t seen yet (I think).😁

You’re probably sick of comments and questions from me today. But I had to say again how much I adore and keep returning to “Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming.” As I’m navigating and plotting my own way through the parabatai relationship and broken bonds and what it did/does/and could mean for Alec and Jace I just adore how you wrote it. How they had to face the grief, betrayal, and regret of it all but still somehow had love and the end of it.

And then the dichotomy of the toxic bond of Alec&Jace and the healthy bond between Malec.

And ultimately how Alec choosing himself always leads to Magnus.

I just woke up and your comments all gave me life.I adored every single one of them and will give each one a more in depth response when I’m slightly more awake, but I loved loved loved them - especially the notes and thoughts you left after each passage you quoted because yes! That was pretty much my train of thinking when I was writing them!

Showing their was love despite all of the betrayal and grief was exactly what I wanted to show with Swallowed up. Despite how toxic their dynamic can be, there is love and genuine care there. Neither knows how to show it, though, and with how parentified Alec is in the series and how much Jace is lauded as everything Alec should be (+ their less than stellar childhoods) - it’s not surprising their dynamic is the way it is.

Alec choosing himself always leads to Magnus, yes! For me, Alec didn’t struggle with him being gay - he struggled with how he wouldn’t be allowed to be while keeping without losing his position and putting his family at risk. He wasn’t allowed to be gay, not too scared to accept he was. Or that’s my personal HC of it.

Also, with the parabatai bond being lauded as being so powerful and important (and you know being some kind of soul bond), I have trouble believing that it breaking wouldn’t be painful and have consequences. (I also have trouble believing that what we saw in the show was the extent of what advantages such a bond hold but that’s another discussion).

Also ooooh I can’t wait to see what you come up with story-wise. If it’s even half as good as Contigencies it’s going to be great, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for it!😁💜

The whole premise for that dragon!Alec fic was Alec being a big cuddly dragon that went SHINY the moment he saw Magnus and it was so much fun writing it. Just one big pile of fluff and cuteness.

Raphael and the other vampires' help made no sense. They just got rid of Camille, and she already created enough trouble for the Brooklyn Clan that they would want to keep their heads down and stay under the Clave's radar for a while—not risk their lives for a Seelie. More so given that they can't keep themselves safe behind wards or in another dimension like warlocks and the Seelie.

Luke and the werewolves made sense, given that Luke is Clary's dad and their alpha, but the vampires simply made no sense, so I decided to change that. So, I can only say that I have the same opinion as you have and I don't know why Raphael said yes in the series, except maybe Clary's speech struck a nerve because otherwise, it's just a big ???? for me.

In the show, the Silent Brothers kept the Soul Sword (probably for safekeeping? it was never really explained why, but I HC it as them having even better protections in place than the institutes given they live longer, are stronger, and know runes the standard shadowhunter doesn't). And, with Valentine being out and about, the Clave didn't want to risk moving the Soul Sword and having it stolen in transit, so they decided to send the people who needed to be questioned to the Silent City to be questioned by the Silent Brothers. Or that's how I HC it because otherwise, it makes no sense to me either.

I hope that explanation was somewhat clear, lol.

That said, something else I would love to see - don’t know who would write it though I do know @dreaming-marchling (hope you don’t mind me tagging you) would be someone who would write this very well because Across the Lonely Decades??? Yes it’s from Alec’s POV but you see get the feel - is just a very long Magnus fic about his life and the different tragedies and joys he’s lived through.

Oh that’s a hard one. Mostly because there are so many fics and plots and themes I want to read. But, if I had to choose one, I would say a fix-it to the whole Cup-stealing debacle in season one. Or just a fic where Jace and Clary are the ones to reap the consequences of their actions because in the series Alec or Magnus are usually the one suffering those consequences.

As for best, I know so many authors who would do such a fic justice (seriously how are there so many talented writers in this fandom it is ridiculous…not that I’m complaining because more fic for me to read😁) I know @lawsofchaos1 would absolutely throw such a fic out of the park *cough* Laudanum my beloved *cough*.

I feel ridiculous recommending them because if you’re in the shadowhunters fandom you know all of these people because their fics are just all-around stellar, but:

@lawsofchaos1: anything Laws writes is spectacular but also will emotionally destroy you.

@faejilly: some of the prettiest words ever, I’ve said it a million times and wil do so a million more reading Jilly words is like reading poetry it’s so pretty!

@to-the-stars-writing: I love her worldbuilding so much. So so much. Also will wreck your feels as well.

@la-muerta who I just recced in October for the October rec list because, again, favorite horror fics in the whole fandom. And I’m generally a baby when it comes to horror but their fics and writing is just so good.

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

I already gave one example with the stabbing. Another weird topic was me googling a list of all the kinds of poison that taste good/sweet. Spend a whole afternoon and evening googling it which probably has put me on some list somewhere, lol.😂

I am a big foodie and I was hungry. That’s it, that’s the reason. 😅
