You’ve never actually seen Miya Atsumu and his girlfriend.

This was your first time today during Sugawara’s house party, Daiki had forced you to go and insisted that the three of them needed to have their manly bonding time (it actually only consisted of stuffing themselves with junk food and watching shounen animes), “...Also don’t you want to bond out with your ex-boyfriend that you chose over me? I’m hurt, I didn't know you like fake blonde volleyball players.” he fake-sniffled, in which you replied with an arched brow.

You didn’t know how he ended up knowing about Atsumu, you were expecting a talk from him but he simply shrugs it off and says, “No matter how much I tell you that you should tell him, you won’t listen. So I won’t bother wasting my breath, just know that you’re being selfish by denying these boys the right to have a father and you're denying that blonde shrimp to be a dad too.” 

“Y/N-san, I’m surprised you came!” Sugawara grins.

“Daiki took charge of the kids.” You replied, fiddling with the keys in your hand.

“He looks very reliable.” the teacher exclaims, handing you a drink in which you completely deny because you weren’t very good with alcohol, “You guys would make a great couple!”

“Oh,” You voiced, you were very familiar with those words, many people had always thought you and Daiki would make a good pair. It was definitely a shock to many when they found out you were pregnant and that the basketball player was not the father despite being there most of the times, “I’ve never seen him that way.”

“He did mention that, he even openly confessed to Miya-san that he’s jealous of how he was your first boyfriend.”

You choked on your saliva, that fucking sly bastard-

“Anyways, make yourself comfortable! I have to go say hi to my old friends from college!” he exclaims, patting your shoulder. You immediately turn around to find Miya Atsumu cozying up with a beautiful girl in his arms.

Ah, that must’ve been the beautiful model with legs for days.

“You’re kind of staring.” comes a very familiar voice.

You want to roll your eyes but you decided against it, “I didn’t know you and Sugawara-san were close, Inunaki-san.” you greeted your annoying senior.

“Suga-san’s a friend to the whole team…” he grins, “Also, I’m just here to warn you that Osamu might be here later, he’s not as nice as Atsumu towards you.”

“You don’t have to remind me.” 

“Come to think of it,” Shion Inunaki paused, tapping his chin in deep thought, “Atsumu still follows you around like a lost puppy. He’s been spending his off days with you instead of his girlfriend. I’m actually surprised he even brought her here today.”

“What are you implying?” You reply, feigning ignorance.

“Ah, L/N-san. I love how you still don’t care about my kohai’s feelings up till now.” He grinned, sarcasm oozing out of his sentence.

“Don’t be silly.” You glazed,“What feelings would there be but hatred?”

“It’s anything but that, L/N-san.” he turns to you, hand on his hip, “Even I don’t get why he’s so into you after all this time and the shit you put him through. He’s got someone better in front of him. Physical looks and emotionally speaking, Ri-chan’s a whole lot better than you… No offense…”

You knew he was rubbing salt to the injury but you couldn’t really bring yourself to argue with him, after all, he was right at the most part (you technically considered yourself as the big bad villainous ex in Atsumu’s life) 

“You sound like those girls who used to threaten me back then when I was dating Miya-san.” You replied coolly, Inunaki even notices the amusement dripping in your tone, it's as if he hadn’t insulted you right at the face and called you a lesser being, “It’s almost pathetic.”

You ended up on the balcony right after, so much for trying to socialize, who were you kidding? It’s good you manage to escape the scene before Osamu could see you there, you couldn’t handle Inunaki and the grey-haired twin together. Thank god that Aran wasn’t around the area.

“Figured you’d be here.”

You turn to find the one and only source of all your problems these days, Miya Atsumu, you narrow your eyes in annoyance, “You should leave, people will get the wrong idea.” You simply replied, “I’m not in the mood to be in the middle of that.”

“I just came here because I wanted to apologize about that night with your brat.” the blonde casually leans against the doorway, “It was my fault for riling him up.”

“Yuuto has a temper, he’s more of his otosan than me.” 

“What was he like?”

“Who?”

“The bastard that you miss, those brats father…”

You tilt your head and press your lips together, surprised by his choice of words, “Special.” you openly-confessed as you gaze at the very man in front of you. Oh, the irony of it all. 

How you wish it was that easy to let go of all your fears and anxiety, if you had told him six years ago about your pregnancy, would your life probably be different? What if you told him now? How would he feel?

“He’s lucky,” he admits, gaze fixed on you, “I mean - other than the part that he died  - he was a lucky guy, Y/N.”

It dawned upon you that moment that this had been the first conversation you had with your ex that held no hatred, malice, or anger. He seemed to be slowly accepting the fact that you wanted to do nothing with him. Like you, he had no choice but to move on.

“ ‘Tsumu! What the fuck you moping around alone for up there? You got a girlfriend here!” Osamu calls down from below. You both snap back to reality at his brother's voice, “Guess that’s my cue to leave, I’ll see you around, Y/N.” he uttered softly and as he turned away, you suddenly spoke out.

“I’m sorry.” He freezes in place, somehow this apology seemed different than the rest, “I know I’ve said that a lot these past few weeks and that night but I want you to know that every apology was genuine. I just, I’m not very-”

“I know.” He suddenly turns to you, the very familiar and warm grin that you're accustomed to decorates his features and you feel like its that night in fall and you're back in college again, “I guess I was so wrapped up in wanting to get an emotion out of you that I hadn’t  realized, it’s not you if you did that. You always had trouble expressing yourself naturally to people after all.”

You feel your insides clamp and your lips tremble lightly, you feel the air turn heavy around you. How is that he was always the one pulling the strings and doing all the work between you two? How could he forgive you this easily?

“Don’t be silly.What feelings would there be but hatred?”

“It’s anything but that, L/N-san.” 

“I’m proud that you’re trying hard for your kids though,” He chuckles, “Those brats are lucky they get to see all sides of you everyday.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, Goodnight, Y/N.”

“Goodnight.” you muttered, watching his figure walk away and vanish in the dark, leaving you all alone in the night of spring.

“...I now pronounce you husband and wife…”

You stare at your father and his new wife looking at each other with complete love and adoration, something you never saw when you were growing up. It sickened you to the point that you turn slightly pale and feel the bile on your throat rise. You watch them exit the church as sakura petals fall, the idea of a picture perfect wedding and happily ever after like the fairytale books you used to scorn when you were a child.

You loathed it.

He even had the audacity to invite you and your mother. She ended up not going and was probably drowning herself in cheap saki at home.

You sat at the back during the reception, along with the people who were not exactly ‘close’ to the bride-groom. You feel like an utter fool, why were you even here? You should’ve gone home or attended that stupid party and get stupid drunk with people you barely knew like your mother.

Yeah, that’s right.

You’d rather be there than here.

“Ah,” you hear a glass clink, you saw one of your dad’s friends stand up, ready to make a speech, “First off, I’d like to congratulate my friend. Finally!” laughter resonates throughout the room but you don’t follow suit, instead, you hold onto the wine glass tightly as if you don’t like where this was going, “I know how unhappy you were back then but ever since you met Yui-chan, your life seemed to have become better. I could never be more proud!”

You could feel yourself getting sicker by the moment, especially after you heard the words you dreaded to hear the most, “Let’s not make anymore mistakes shall we?” he jokes.

All you could see was red right after, grabbing your clutch on the table as you made a haste exit. Was this the reason he invited you? To shove it on your face that you were a mistake made?

That you shouldn't have been born?

You ended up breaking a heel and tripping on your own feet soon after, shakily, you adjust your posture and sat at the concrete for a few moments, trying to gather yourself but desperately failing, "I didn't… I didn't ask to be born too, you know?" You murmured to yourself bitterly.

You let it all out, it shouldn't have hurt to be called a mistake. You were an adult already for crying out loud! Yet when they toss that word around like it was nothing especially at that wedding, you feel like you're eight years old again and you're hearing your own mother curse at you for being born into this world, the harsh words she said were as clear as the day, "if you probably hadn't been born, we would've been happier. We'd have better lives, Y/N. So don't go around and cry and think you got it bad, you hear me? Your sadness is nothing compared to ours. It's nothing, Y/N. So stop being ungrateful."

You ended up at the frat house that night, people would occasionally glance at your disheveled state but you just downed the alcohol, ignoring their stares as usual  and when you get a text from your mother asking why you left the wedding so early in such a manner, you feel the pent-up emotions bubbling within you again. 

Blocking her number and taking one last swig of the cheap vodka in your hands, you head up to one of the rooms upstairs. You hold it all in well, you don't want to showcase such things to strangers.You feel the alcohol and emotion about to hit you when you open a door that you thought would be your safe space for the next ten minutes but you're immediately greeted by two people on the bed, ready to hit it off and have a good time.

"O-Oh sorry… I-Wrong room...” you stammered, lips quivering and small tears escaping since you couldn't hold it in anymore.You immediately bolted out the door, So much for sobering up and crying by yourself for ten minutes, you might as well call Daiki, maybe he was available-

“Hey! Y/N!” a very familiar and a very unexpected voice calls out your name on the quiet street.

You hesitantly turn only to find your project partner and classmate standing there, a bit out of breath as if he had just squeezed through the very crowded party in a hurry, you're confused by his actions. You weren’t exactly close? What was he doing?

“Hey.” he softly says, taking out a handkerchief from his pocket to hand it to you. You hesitantly look at it and take it from his grasp as you try to get rid of the runny mascara. You're taken aback by his kind actions so far, although he had always been nice and tried to make conversations with you, you weren’t exactly very participative and it had always been one-sided on his part. 

When he suddenly stopped talking to you recently, you didn’t bother to initiate anymore because you didn’t want to get more involved with people like him.  It’s not like he was a bad person, per say, he just had such a loud presence that made everyone stop and stare. You weren’t exactly a big fan of those kinds of people (save for daiki since you grew up with him)

“Come on, Y/N.” the blonde sighs, taking off his jacket to place it on you, “Let's take you home.”

"You don't have to."

"You look like shit, Y/N. I’m not takin' no for an answer" Atsumu points out forwardly, "Actually, before we head home lets disinfect that wound, yeah?"

"Miya-san, I-" you tried to tell him you were fine but he didn’t seem to be having it.

"Atsumu." He corrects, despite his forwardness and brash attitude, you know he means well, "You let me call you by your first name so please don't call me Miya-san, sounds fuckin weird coming from ya."

You're thankful that he doesn't pry or ask questions about why you looked like this. He just mumbles throughout your whole journey that you shouldn't wear heels when you can't even walk on them.You also start to notice the slight accent from his tone when he got annoyed by your insistence that you were alright, you had always thought that he was a city boy with the way he carried himself.

When you arrive at the drugstore, he pays for the necessities himself despite you protesting again and even buys you a sugar-free treat on top of that, "You said you were diabetic one time." He shrugs off as he lets you sit on the concrete steps.

“Oh,” You faltered, “You remembered.”

“It’s one of the few things you said. You don’t talk to me that much so it's not hard to remember the things you say.”

“Sorry.” You tried to apologize, brows furrowed in deep thought and the only reply you got was a gleeful laughter from the blonde setter.

“You don’t really mean that do you?” he observed but he didn't look insulted by it at all, instead he seemed amused by it, “Don’t sweat it, Y/N. My twin told me I could be an annoying shit at times.”

“No,” you mused, “Not at all, you’re not annoying.”

Atsumu stares at you right in the eye, his corners crinkling just a bit as the amused smile never leaves his features, you’re starting to like it when you see him smile that way, it reminded you a lot of the youth you craved for, the problematic-free youth that you wanted and wished, “Is it safe to say that you don’t mind my company?” he guessed.

“Well, you’re here now and I haven’t left you.” 

He doesn’t reply,  instead he bends down to your level and takes the antiseptic and band-aids from your hands. Before you could object, the setter dabs it on your wound and as you seethe quietly in pain, he blows on it. You’re getting more and more perplexed by his actions tonight especially with the words he says next, “I may not be close with you to know what happened tonight but I hope I made you feel a little bit better, Y/N.” 

The next time you see the professional volleyball player is at work,You’re tasked to send out some documents to your boss again and it just so happens they’re wrapping up the shoot for the advertisement at the studio.

Something’s different now. 

After your little talk with him at the terrace, the air around you doesn’t feel tight, your anxiety around him seems to decrease, and your feet doesn’t get cold anymore. Of course, Inunaki would throw in a jab or insult but you took it like a good sport and didn’t bother with him.

“Ah, L/N-san! How are the boys?” Hinata jumps up and down excitedly as he sees you enter the studio, you still couldn’t get used to this big (small) bundle of energy.

“They’re doing fine, Hinata-san.” 

“Oho, L/N-san, you’re looking better these days.” Inunaki teased, you gave him a brief nod and just ignored the jab, Atsumu slaps his seniors back in retaliation, “You’re not the one she broke up with Inu-san.” he joked, “Hey L/N-san.”

“Miya-san.” You greeted.

“Does Yuuto still want to skewer me like a kebab?”

“He feels sad that he wasn’t able to say sorry to you before you left.” You replied, a hint of amusement laced on your tone as you recalled Yuuto frowning on the dinner table the night before because Sugawara had informed the club members that Hinata and Atsumu wouldn’t be visiting as much because training was about to start.

“Shame, wanted to see that brat say sorry too.” He let out a grin, your conversation is cut short though when a new presence joins the room.

“Oh, Riku-chan!” Inunaki calls out.

You lick your dry lips as you see the very beautiful and tall raven-haired woman approach you, wow, Miya Atsumu outdid himself with this one. You recalled her being on Vogue magazine once and on tv a few times as a fashion model of an underwear brand.

“Oh, hey babe.” Atsumu greets, you note how stiff he became. He probably thought this would be an uncomfortable situation. The woman, unlike you, was very open with her affection. She gave him a brief kiss on his jaw.

Hinata greets her and you’re left wondering if you should excuse yourself before you could make Atsumu more uncomfortable by your presence but Inunaki, being an asshole, decides to make the choice for you, “L/N-san, this is Miyazaki Riku! I’m sure you know her, she’s a supermodel!” he introduces you to her.

“Good day.” You greet the model.

She tilts her head slightly, “Have we met before? You look very familiar.”

“She was my kohai back in Uni and Atsumu’s classmate!” Inunaki grins, patting your back, you hold back a glare since you didn’t want to make it more awkward than it was.

“Oh?” she chirped, immediately letting go of Atsumu’s hand, she grabbed onto yours, “What was he like? I bet he was so cool and chic back then too!”

Chic and Cool?

Memories of a rather clumsy and corny Miya Atsumu in college slowly wormed its way to your head and out of nowhere, you burst into a low chuckle. Inunaki was startled by the sudden reaction and Atsumu feels his insides mush up when he hears that very rare sound, “Yeah,” you croaked, shortly after recovering from your small laugh, “Definitely chic and cool.”

“That’s so cool! I definitely want to hear stories about you back in college, baby!”

“Maybe some other time,” you voice is back to its smooth and cool tone, realizing that you needed to leave from this uncomfortable conversation and start your job, “I have to finish up my work here and get home early.”

“That’s a shame, I could definitely tell you guys were close.” a frown tugs her lips as she notices how quick you were to say goodbye to her, “Bye, L/N-san!”

After that rather dry and one-sided enthusiastic conversation, you finish your work quickly and Daiki messages you just in time that he and the boys would pick you up, you say your goodbyes to your director, the staff, and the volleyball team. You don’t notice the lingering gaze of Atsumu as you left nor do you notice Inunaki telling him that he’s got his girlfriend right in front of him and he shouldn’t look your way.

They shortly wrap up right after and they’re ready to go home. After deciding that they’d all grab a good meal together (much to sakusa’s dismay), Atsumu feels his mood lighten up as they exit the studio to see you standing there along with Yuuto, unwrapping his onigiri. As he’s about to call the brat to talk to him and even drop in to say hi to you, he sees a familiar tall figure emerge from the convenience store with Youta in his arms.

The blonde decides against it.

“...You always had trouble expressing yourself naturally to people after all.”

He watches the interaction from afar and notes how easy it was for the man to interact with you, he even catches on an amused smirk from you as the man tries to tell you a joke, “Is that L/N-san?” he hears Riku ask, “I didn’t know she had a family, that’s so cute!”

Atsumu doesn’t really know what to say as he watches the domestic scene unfold in front of him, he was trying to move on, wasn’t he? Yet why can’t he look away? 

“Baby? You alright there? You’ve been staring at the empty space for a while.” Riku calls out, sounding a bit worried as she snaps him out of his daze. You were already gone, probably far off with that scrub and the brats.

“I’m good.” he tried to affirm himself, wishing it was true, “I’m good.”

-ive had ppl talk about how masc lesbians being touch-me-nots is problematic/toxic and how its more about upholding a "status" than it is about preference. What do you make of that?

Not invasive at all! I'm happy to answer and thank you for asking :).

- I realized I was a lesbian at age 12 when I developed a HUGE crush on my gorgeous English teacher. I also got a small crush on a girl in one of my classes. I didn't grow up around much homophobia so it wasn't hard for me to accept that I was gay but what was hard was the absolute intensity of my feelings towards my teacher. I used to pray to god to have my feelings for her taken away because they were just so intense and I didn't know how to handle them (she was my teacher so I clearly wasn't going to ask her out. There was literally no outlet for what I was feeling so I kept it bottled.). My parents never brought up gay people in any positive or negative way and the kids I grew up around didn't really either. So me being gay wasn't something I beat myself up over. Once I accepted that I wasn't an overly invested straight ally, the road to acceptance was a peace of cake tbh.

-My coming out was... Well. I first started coming out to my friends when I was 13 and they were accepting of it. It honestly wasn't that interesting to tell you the truth 😅. All the peers that I gave a shit about never gave me shit for being gay. I never lost a friend for being gay. Coming out to my parents took me until I was 16 and the reason for that is because I genuinely didn't know how they'd react. Like I said, they never said anything about gay people point blank period. However, I was kind of forced to come out one particular night because my heart had been fucking shattered by a girl I was strongly crushing on at the time. I was pacing up and down my house, my best friend wasn't answering me, I could hear my dad's TV playing, it was late, I was tired, I couldn't sleep, I had school tomorrow, I was freaking out, I was devastated... I wanted to be comforted so I went to my father, threw my head into his arm and started telling him how my heart felt broken. He asked me if I had a boyfriend and when I said "nope" there was some silence and he was like "it's okay, I've known for a long time". I never actually said the words "gay" or "lesbian" during my coming out but I guess I didn't need to. The next morning, my father asked if it was okay if he could go tell my mom and I said yes. Long story short, my mom was even less surprised than my dad and she's the more progressive of the two so it wasn't really an issue (though she did tell me to keep an open mind in terms of liking men 😅 she seems to think I'm bisexual which is whatever because she never bothers me about it).

-Hmm. I don't like to completely cut out religion from my life. My father was extremely religious and now that he's gone, I feel it's disrespectful for me to say God doesn't exist. Like, "dad, you spent practically your whole life believing wholeheartedly in God but guess what! It was a waste and the thing you dedicated your life is something I think is a fairytale!" that doesn't sit right with me at all. I've been baptized and I used to go to church when I was younger. I think that there's no reason to shake my head at the possibility of a God. In terms of being gay and believing in God, I once watched a video by a devout Christian gay man who went through all the homophobic stuff Christians love to quote from the bible and gave the actual meaning behind them. I, personally, do not think that God is homophobic. I think that God's love is not something we have the capacity to understand. So, I, personally, think Christian gay people are perfectly fine and are already balanced. Here's to hoping that they stay away from homophobic churches!

-No, I wasn't always masc. As a child I was a huge girly girl. Like, legit, I wasn't a tomboy in the slightest lmao. I'm not sure when I started being masc. But what I do know is that I've grown far more masc over the years. I used to not want to dress too manly (no tuxedo's and no clothes from the men's section and no boxers) but nowadays I love all of those things and that's genuinely what I want in my wardrobe so I have no problem going into the men's section for my clothes.

-No, I don't call myself a stud. Love those guys though. The label I feel that's most accurate for me is masc.

-Um, I'm not sure how to answer this since I don't have experience being any other kind of lesbian. I guess it's just kind of tiring. I'm black, female, and homosexual. That's a LOT of different topics to give my attention to. The hardest part of being a black lesbian is knowing who to give my camaraderie to. Do I give it to black women? Black women AND black men? Lesbians? Only black lesbians? The lgb community as a whole? It's just a lot to think about. I will say, though, I think that it's a lot harder to be a masc black lesbian than a white one. Black women are already perceived as manly just based off of our skin color. So for me to willingly present masc can often be... A non-pretty picture in the eyes of society and I'm hyper-aware of that which is why I often have trouble going all out with the wardrobe I truly desire. That's my biggest challenge navigating the world as the black lesbian that I am. On a more positive note though, it's great being a black lesbian because I can have an opinion on everything and nobody can tell me I'm being racist/homophobic/sexist or stepping outside of my lane 😂. I'm on a three-lane road motherfucker and I'm not afraid to use all of them.

-my thoughts are that you should leave people alone. I will say though, I once read something that was like "if you call yourself a femme but the idea of being with a butch disgusts you, you're not a femme, you're just a feminine lesbian" and that rang true to me so it feels hypothetical (and nonsensical) if the reverse wasn't true as well. If a butch/stud shits on femmes and assumes they can't be as feminine as they are and ACTUALLY gay then I do have a problem. Butches and femmes have a history that's damn near inseparable from each other so for a butch to shit on femmes... I'd argue that they're probably not butch but instead just masculine lesbians. However, I don't care if two butches or studs want to date lmao. All the power to them, I hope they're happy.

-I definitely used to support trans rights more than I do now. I would correct people who misgendered others. I thought trans women were women. I was in support of bathroom laws. I never made posts about it, but I very much did believe it. Magdalen berns made me peak. I started realizing that gender makes no sense. I did some research and came to the conclusions I hold today. Even when I want to go back to my ignorance, I can't because I've seen too much by now.

-I honestly don't know. I think that some masc lesbians don't want to be put in that "feminine" position of being touched by their partner. It could stem from upholding a status but at the end of the day, sexual boundaries are sexual boundaries. What are you gonna do? Force your touch on to them? Yikes. Leave them be. If you're upset about your partner not wanting to be touched by you then get a new one. Clearly you're not sexually happy so leave. I don't think it's necessarily toxic unless they think there's something inherently demeaning in being touched by their partner or they do want to be touched but won't allow themselves due to trauma or feeling like there's a certain persona they must uplift. Other than that though, I don't see the issue.

Closing Time - Chapter 12 

Claire Beauchamp is a second year medical student. Due to many late nights with her clinicals, and studying for her pharmacology class, she’s at wits end. One Friday night she decides not to join Joe Abernathy and her other friends out at Church, their local hangout spot, but instead winds up in a dive bar close to her flat with a very nice whisky selection. In fact, one of the best one she’s ever seen. When the bartender calls her ‘Sassenach’ and pours her a double, Claire gets a feeling in her chest she’s never felt before.

I slept that night the soundest I had in weeks — although the nurses had come in every 3 hours to check on Jamie and his pain, I slept through it all.

I woke to Jamie’s large hand as he pushed a curl behind my ear. Coming to my senses slowly, I placed my hand over his, getting tangled in an array of IV tubes.

“Och, Sassenach, ye dinna want to move too much to yer right, or ye’ll pull the tube outta my hand! Here, let me help ye.” Jamie chuckled as I felt his hand grab mine and moved some of the tubes around.

“Ye slept like a rock last night.”

“Well when your boyfriend decides to almost go and die on you and then stay in a coma for a few days…..One will lose a lot of sleep.” I spoke softly as I turned my head up towards the monitor. “Good news, your O2 levels and heart rate are steady.”

“Claire.” Jamie said as he used his hand to turn my face towards him. “Ye dinna have to be in doctor mode, ye ken? Ye can just be Claire…. I’m no’ goin’ anywhere.”

I looked down towards his hands slowly, assessing the ports and paper tape, as I scanned down his stomach — his hospital gown half open showing a slope of hard muscle and smooth skin, half covering him, as I noted the gauze pads and ace bandages covering his back.  

“Jamie.” I said as the emotion caught the best of me, “I…. Everyone I have ever loved has always left me and you were very close to doing the same as well.” I carefully tilted my head back up towards his once more.

“I promise ye, you will never be alone, again.”  Jamie said firmly as a small cough interrupted us at the end of the bed.

“Sorry to interrupt the two of you.” Joe said as he gave me a daring glance, a smirk on his faces and his eyebrows furrowed together. “But, I have good news.”

Jamie nodded as I slid off the bed and walked over to Joe, throwing my arms around him in a rib-crushing hug. “Joe! It’s so good to see you.”

“It is nice to see that you have gotten some sleep, finally.” Joe said as he kissed my cheek. “It looks like Jamie is going to be able to discharged around noon. A nurse practitioner from plastics is going to come down and show you how to change the bandages and handle his medications… I told them his girlfriend is a doctor, but it’s just protocol.”

My pulse quickened as I heard my new title – hearing it from Jamie’s sister was one thing, as the experience of the past few days had bonded us in some fashion, but hearing the term from someone who was as close to family as I had was something else. I crossed my arms across my chest and looked back at Jamie as I flashed him a wide smile, and turned my face back to Joe as he was nodding his head in approval.

“Aye, I ken. Nay bother.”

“Then, you all will be free to go.” Joe said as he placed his hand on Jamie’s foot, giving him a big smile. “I am glad for our lady’s sake, you didn’t die.”

“Me too.” Jamie responded as he blushed lightly. Joe turned his attention back towards me.

“And you, Lady Jane, since midterms are over and we have your shifts covered for the next two weeks… You are going to be this gentleman’s personal doctor and get some recovery yourself…. Understood?”

I shook my head as Joe signed off on Jamie’s chart and left us.

“Well, Fraser, I think it’s time we worked on getting you home.” I quipped as I grasped his face in between my hands and kissed him thoroughly.

Getting Jamie discharged and home was easier said than done. Due to all the bandages on his back, he needed three blankets to cover the seat to even allow him to be comfy enough for the 2 hour car ride.

Two hours was not all that long, but for a 6’5” Scottish Highlander and the small back seat of my Range Rover, it was quite a task.

Seeing as Jenny had left us the night before, it took us almost 4 hours to drive from Edinburgh through the Highlands to Jamie’s childhood home — Lallybroch. While I was able to handle the drive on my own, I had convinced Jamie to pop an extra pain pill just for the drive home, to make it as manageable as could be.

Had Jenny stayed and driven back with us an extra set of hands to help keep him comfortable in the back seat would have been appreciated, but we made it work—even if I had to stop three times to adjust his body a few times.

Oh the things you do for love, or so I could hear Joe saying in the back of my head.

I looked in the rearview as the GPS guided me to ‘Take the next left’ and ‘The destination will be on your right’ and saw a small smile on Jamie’s still medicine induced face.

A stone archway greeted me as a large stone house with matching bricks filled my point of view.

“Well you come from humble beginnings.” I muttered as I pulled my car next to the truck.

“My father built this place. His blood and sweat are in this very stone. He and my mother… Well, my grandsire didna want them to get married, so they ran off, and built Lallyrboch.” Jamie said. I turned in my seat and reached in the back and unfastened his seatbelt.

“I was just giving you a hard time — it’s beautiful, the three minutes I have seen of it. Seems like the kind of place that every child dreams of growing up… Where your mom calls you in for dinner and you’re way up in the hills and you come running back but your plate is cold.”

Jamie reached up and touched my cheek, gingerly, running his finger along the lines of my cheek.

“Aye. And I’d be covered in dirt and grime with my Da trailing right behind me, a big smile on my face. She’d hose me down before I could even go in the house.” I briefly turned my face to the palm of his hand and gave it a kiss. “I am verra glad yer here, Claire.”

“I won’t lie, I wish it were under different circumstances, but alas, there’s nowhere else I would rather be.”

“She looked at me and said ‘Fine, we will be married on St. Martin’s Day.’ I tried to tell her how we couldna do such a thing, but then I found myself standing at the alter saying I do.” Ian said as he pushed his plate in front of him.

Ian Murray was nothing like I had pictured him to be — tall and well built, but smaller than Jamie.  He too, had eyes as blue as the ocean, but strikingly blonde hair and an extremely laid back personality, compared to that of his married half, an undeniable Fraser.

“Aye, and ye havena looked back since… Have ye?” Jenny said as she wiped the tears from laughter off her face and grasped for his hand.

I sat the napkin on my plate, and pushed it forward, wiping my own happy tears off my face. I looked over to Jamie who was finishing his meal slowly— too stubborn to ask for help.

“Jamie… Let the lass help ye eat. She’s already seen ye nearly dead, the least she can do is spoon feed ye.” Ian said as he stood up, gathering all the dirty plates.

“Aye.” Jamie grumbled. My hand rested on his thigh, and I gave it a small squeeze as I took the utensils from his hands, knowing just what he wanted me to help him with.

Jenny grabbed wee Jamie from his booster seat and excused herself. “This wee one needs a bath and to go to bed. Ian will be in the kitchen shall ye need anything. Jamie can show ye where his old room is. The sheets are clean, I put three extra pillows on the bed and the towels in the attached bathroom are for the both of ye as well. I will see ye both tomorrow morning.”

Young Jamie squawked as Jenny tried to get a tighter grasp on her toddler as she reached the bottom of the stairs.  

“Claire…” Jamie said as he pushed my hand out of his face and made eye contact. “Ye dinna have to say yes, I can…. Probably figure it out myself, but I was wondering…. If ye would help be scrub off all the hospital, when we are finished eating. And then go to bed with me.”

“You do know, that you cannot get wet, correct?” I said as I shoved his mouth full of food. I watched his cheeks as they flushed a bright shade of red and he shook his head giving me the confirmation I needed. “So you do understand, that this means, a sponge bath?” I grinned from ear to ear—the idea of my hands on his bare skin sent a flush of heat to my face as I grinned from ear to ear.

Jamie nodded once more, as I heard Ian’s light footsteps behind us, as he was making his way up the stairs.  “Jamie Fraser, if ye dinna marry the lass who offers to give ye a sponge bath… Then ye have something wrong with ye!”

“I plan on it, Murray.” Jamie grinned from his chair as turned just enough to face Ian.

“Good. I like her, too. She may be a sassenach after all, but she fits in verra well around here.” Ian finished as he disappeared upstairs.

My eyes flickered as they looked over the plate and I filled another forkful of food for Jamie. I looked up at him, raising my eyebrows signaling if he wanted another bite. He nodded as I filled his mouth once more, neither one of us commenting on the statement he had just admitted.

My heart fluttered at it though, because while I had only been here at Lallybroch for a mere 5 hours, it felt like I belonged.

We sat in a comfortable silence then, as I finished feeding Jamie the last few bites of his food. I heard the soft hum of Jenny as she sang a nursery rhyme to wee Jamie, and the laundry machine going as Ian must have switched over a load.

As Jamie chewed his last bite, he leaned his head against the back of his chair, closing his eyes, listening to the sounds the old house made. The creaks in the floorboard as Jenny and Ian followed a toddler around upstairs. The gentle hum of the dishwasher in the kitchen— I could hear the low mum of the AC as it fluttered through the house. The house had a peculiar aroma to it too, something along the lines of fresh baked cookies, cinnamon, and lavender.

I took the napkin off my lap, wiping Jamie’s five o’clock shadow. Good god, he needed a shave.

He smiled as he felt the fabric touch his skin, but didn’t open his eyes.

His hand found mine, as I set the napkin on the table and he opened his eyes, looking right at me.

“With the bar, and the restaurant, I havena been back here in months…. It hasna really felt like home since my parents died…. But havin’ ye here, Sassenach, it feels more like home than it has in a long time Thank ye, Claire. For giving this feeling back to me.”

My heart stopped for a minute as my brain registered the words that had just come out his mouth. I pulled his hand up to my lips, and kissed his callous and bruised knuckles.

“You’re welcome.” I said as I kissed his knuckles once more and running his knuckles along my lips, my breath warm on his hands. “But you do smell like a sterile hospital room! Why don’t we go get you a bath and a bed, Fraser.”

I stood up, slowly, giving him my hands and helping him slowly up to a standing position. I looked up, to see Ian leaning over the balcony, eyes on Jamie and me, taking in the intimate moment he had just caught us in. He gave me a small nod of affirmation, as Jamie continued to help himself stand upright.

I smiled up at him nodding back — my affirmation that yes, I love your best friend, and wasn’t going to hurt him, I was in it for the long haul.

Ian walked off back into a room and I felt Jamie’s hands on my shoulders.

“Lead me, Sassenach. Up the stairs, slowly. Last door on the left.”

I placed my hands on top of his and as we started our slow journey towards his bedroom.

I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face because for the first time in my 26 years, my orphan heart finally felt like it had found a home.

Veronica Lodge - Pestilence.

Stepping out of her white car, Veronica shuttered. It wasn’t due to the chill in the air nor to the soft breeze that passes through Riverdale, it was because she was at the local hospital. Or if you want to get more into detail, the hospice wing. Pushing past the clear doors, her small black heels closed on the tile flooring as she walked over to the elevator and hit the up button.  She smiled solemnly to the nurse pushing a cart with goods. Stepping into the elevator and hitting the fifth button, she wondered about these centers. How humans made a space for people who they just didn’t want to save, a space for all hope of getting better was lost and patients are left to ponder about what could have been done to be saved and, of course, death.

Opening the door to room 548 she stiffened her lips as she saw her laying in the hospital bed. Y/n hadn’t changed since Veronica’s last visit. She still was breathing ridge, even with the oxygen tank, she still just laid there weakly, waiting death, or even perhaps imagining it, while a vase of flowers sits next to her getting little to no sun.

“I brought you something,” Veronica chimed, setting herself next to the near death influenza victim. Swapping out the flowers for new ones, Veronica moved some hair out of Y/n’s face. Standing up to inspect the IV bag that was pumping water into Y/n’s body, Veronica sighed. “You know, at least I was easy on you. When I spread my abilities to this town, people dropped like flies. This building was getting people every day because of diseases that somehow just came back up with a harder force.” Steady breathing and the low beeps of machines was all Pestilence could hear. “And when I took over this vessel, I learned that Veronica loved you.” Turing to you, it looked right into your eyes.

“Now I’ve created many things. The plague, Scarlet Fever, you can name it all, and I’ve created them all. But the most deadly disease, that I have seen, is love. Its funny because once it's in the human mind, the host will be totally submissive to whatever love wants. Almost as if love possessed its victim. And if I want to keep doing the thing I just love doing, I need Veronica to not act upon love. So sorry Y/n, I’m sure she might miss you.”

Archie Andrews - War. 

Everyday he hated it. He hated sitting down at the lunch room and watching you and your boyfriend Steve have the time of your lives. He hated watching you sit so relaxed with his arm around you, and he hated the fact that you seemed so happy with him. Cutting the story short, he was mad because he wasn’t with you, he believed that it should be him making you laugh so hard you can’t breath. But of course it couldn’t. He hated that on weekends, when he would walk his dog, he would always catch the two of you together in your house. He couldn’t escape it.

“You’re staring at her again.” Jughead said from across the table with what seemed to be a laugh at the end. “Listen dude, you gotta ease off,” Jughead said, beginning to sound like a broken record with all the times he has had to warn his friend about his jealousy. “There are other fish in the sea. Don’t waste your life fawning over some girl who already has a boyfriend.” Archie rolled his eyes and began picking at his food, mumbling about how the brunette just didn’t understand. “And it's not like high school relationships last anyway. Take it from me, it's not worth it until you’re in college.”

But of course, War couldn’t stand it. And he glared at the pair as they were cuddled up in her house. For a moment he wondered why he was there, why was he submitting to the torture of watching them, but his mind quickly came back as his dog tugged on his leash wanting to continue the walk in the dark air. Running a hand through his fiery red locks, Archie reluctantly walked away letting the golden retriever drag him to the end of the block.

On his way back was when he saw it. Part of Archie was horrified, as the star crossed lovers screamed at each other with their arms waving. War laughed in what seemed like content as he watched the movements get more violent. But still the entity stood, watching in gruesome amazement as Y/n was bashed into the ground with her opponent showing no mercy due to the unknown presence of War among them.

On that night there was a girl screaming out, pleading and begging for her life. There was a dog who yanked, and yanked, who just wanted to go home and escape from the night. There was a rabid man. There, standing outside of the living room window, was War.

Betty Cooper - Famine. 

It started with Reggie, a boy who loved football so much he played so much it got him a one way ticket to the coffin with a broken neck. Then it was Veronica, over the past weekend she shopped so much she was arrested on stealing and harming a person who was about to buy what she was. Then it was Jughead, the boy who wanted a perfect home so bad he killed a boy and tried to replace him. It was happening to everyone, somehow your life would be ruined.

So there  they sat, Betty and her friend Y/n on Y/n’s bed talking as if the town around them wasn’t in shreds. “Mom doesn’t want me going out of the house. She thinks then I am more likely to make a bad choice. Only here and church.” Yes, Y/n was the local Christian kid, but it was undeniable to both her and the blonde sitting in front of her that they liked each other. Y/n would never act upon it because she told herself she didn’t want to date in high school.

Y/n grabbed her cross necklace and closed her eyes, trying to pull herself out of the trance. It reminded Betty of the time she use to do that, only she hasn’t touched the necklace as she let it lay under her black sweater.  It seemed as if all Y/n wanted to do was to tackle Betty to her bed and -. Well, that's a bit unholy if you found out. Of course the girl who liked the vessel of Famine thought about kissing the youngest Cooper. How unimaginably soft they would be, and how close they were. But it seemed as if this time was stronger. Her urge for Betty Cooper was almost unobtainable. “I think you need to go,” Y/n stammered out, not daring to look Betty in the eye.

“Why?” Betty laughed, hoping soon the innocent girl before her would give into the hunger that the Horseman brought. “Am I doing something wrong?” By now her voice was just a whisper, and her body sitting flush to Y/n’s. “It’s not going to hurt, in fact it might be one of the most pleasurable time of your life,” She whispered into her ear.

The vessel almost laughed as she heard Y/n let out a shaky breath, her hand still gripping the cross with all her might. “Just give in, I promise it’ll be fun.”

Jughead Jones - Death. 

It was as if time froze as he was not under panic, under the fact that the inescapable fate had happened. Let's give Death credit, at least he is fair.  He had seen many of them throughout his lifetime, too many to be in fact and he had thought by now humans would have already found a way to escape him, to run from the fact that they no longer truly mattered. “Y/n…? Y/n… Y/n.”

After so long, he stopped caring. People were people and no matter how many entered the earth, they always exited through him. At least he doesn’t care, it makes the job easier because its done efficiently and he can move onto the next. It also means no one can take his job, no vacation days, no quitting. Collect, dispose, move on.

A full two weeks they had seen each other, a full two weeks that he let onto her. A girl, a boy, and a fact.

The boy and the girl lay side by side in an open grass field looking up at the stars in the sky, as his old white beat up compact car was parked feet away. He laid with his arm out, and her head snuggled into his chest using his arm as a pillow. She was sick. Coughing, she put her hand to her mouth as he watched in sorrow knowing there was nothing he could do to stop the blood coming up. It didn’t last long before the fit was over and she apologized. “Don’t be,” he told her. “It’s not your fault for being sick.” It was his. Two weeks ago Y/n was as healthy as a horse, now it was as if her body did a whole 180 and wanted her dead.

They rested in silence for a while, enjoying the fact they could just be near each other. He wondered about the girl. How someone with such strife, could find love and then kill it. “Y/n?” He asked, shaking her a bit as he had seen so many people do. He wasn’t scared, and to admit, he could feel tears in his eyes but he wasn’t that sad. “Y/n…” Jughead whispered, feeling a tear roll down his cheek as he looked at the corpse that lay beside him. And with the last breath of her name, Jughead rested his head back down, letting the inescapable doom tear him apart. “Y/n.”

08.07.2011 Grace Summit Sermon – East Asia Update with Eric Chen

I’m Eric Chen – I’m with Intervarsity at The University of Akron – I went to China for 6 weeks – We had a diverse group of students 14 students – West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, California, Pennsylvania (6 states) 4 staff – Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, California One girl had never been on a plane – or a train – and we did a week in Beijing for orientation – what will daily life look like – what does it mean to share the Gospel with those from a different culture. Coming out of Beijing, we had a 24 hour train ride – Staff Team John – from LA, pastor of a large multi-ethnic church in the city – He has always had a heart for Asia – especially SE Asia – as a staff team, we arrived a day early to share with one another. Corrie – International Student Ministry at University of Kentucky – She came because her specialty is working with International students and helping Americans bridge the gap and she led some classes on Cross Cultural skills. Christy – Undergraduate Campus Staff Member at University of Michigan – Dearborn – similar to Akron as a commuter school. Neither John nor Corrie had done undergraduate ministry (working with older students) – Christy and I had a good time helping them learn about working with angsty 19 year olds – sorry – you guys aren’t angsty… Steve – ex-stateside IV staff, now on loan to the Chinese movement, our receiving staff – has been there for 7 years! What was exciting was that none of us had any foreign mission trip experience (longer than 2 weeks) ever! The funny part about this picture is that we had spent a week in China already, and the staff team was already craving burgers… – As staff, we were supposed to teach about culture integration… and here we are at the American joint. Sitting at Lakers – you see internationals (like us) wander out of the shadows and see an American Restaurant – and wander in. Global Project style – Typically, they would pair student to student to engage in intense relationship building and learning one another’s’ culture. Recently, the Chinese Government said no, IV can’t come – even though iV had been coming for years. The vice president of the university had had an impactful time with a group of Canadian Christians back in the 80s – and it had always been in his mind and he had benefited from it. In the late 90s – a guy from IV had found this university and wanted to do a partnership here – and he was the guide to lead us through the front door. He thought – How can I get IV back – if you come back, you have to change your name – and he opened the back-door for us and helped us fly under the radar. Instead of being paired at the hip like former projects, our goal was to through social activities to build friendships. We were pulling off big events to have excuses to talk with Chinese students. Steve had no clue how many to expect. We did a kickoff event – 60-70 students showed up – and that is what we did – created opportunities to have conversations with Chinese students. As we built relationships with the Chinese students, we could really only talk about religion if they first “opened the door”, so to speak. So the best way to getting there was to just throw parties and socials so our students could have excuses to talk with Chinese students Like our first night on campus, when we threw a huge party for about 60 Chinese students Or culture class, where we learned about each other’s cultures – Corrie – sharing about ‘small talk’ – one thing we talked about was GRADES – in America, we don’t talk about grades – probably because of curve-killers! – But in China – they talk about grades – “We are proud when we score well!” Or like when we threw a Christmas party in July, not only to talk about Christmas, but do a gift exchange. You get the picture; we just did stuff to meet Chinese students. If I had the luxury of time, we’d probably spend at least an hour going through stories and pictures of what God did, but for now, I want to share just three stories of what God did this summer I had about 3000 pictures that I had narrowed down to 800. This was my small group (from L to R): Gordon, Heather, Elisabeth, me, Aaron, and Rachel Enter Gordon, Heather, and Aaron, who became friends with a girl named Minnie while going to Kentucky Fried Chicken. Our students were stripped of some of their basic means of communication. We have a common language – and we have texting, Facebook, cell phones. We were stripped of what we were used to. When we talk about sharing the gospel here in the states, we say if you can share with an 8 year old – you are golden. Now imagine talking to someone who can speak only about as well as an 8 year old – but can speak eloquently in their own language about politics and all kinds of things. Students had to face being stripped of most ways of relating with Chinese students Language Culture Interests Technology The challenge was to rely even more on God to make that change, and what better way to communicate our desire for that than through prayer? We prayed that God would open doors for us – put a small group together like mine – 10 o’clock at night – and we would pray – a lot. Some of the fruits of that. Put a small group of students who knew these barriers, and that prayer works, and you got a small group that started to pray and ask God to do some big things on campus. Minnie – here she is leading some of us Americans in Tai Chi. Minnie had been hanging out with her friend Bella, a Christian Chinese student at KFC with Gordon/Heather/Aaron when she started asking about religious beliefs. “I’m interested in knowing what you think!” Unless the student opens the door – you can’t just share with them. We could ask questions that might provoke deeper conversations. This was in the first week, so Gordon/Heather/Aaron were all excited to talk and have this open door, but as they talked more, it became apparent that Minnie was having trouble opening her heart because of a relationship with an Army man. If you are in the Army, you are not supposed to have any beliefs. As this happened, Gordon sensed that he should pray that a storm would rock Minnie’s life. As they walked out the door of KFC, a thunderstorm started rumbling in the distance. To this, Gordon was super excited and ran to tell our small group. “I knew something big was going to happen in Minnie’s life sometime soon” A few days later, the American team met together to pray for Chinese students right before a movie night. During that time, Aaron prayed specifically that God would break down the barrier between Minnie and Jesus, through any means possible. 30 minutes later, when the Chinese students started to arrive, Minnie arrived, and the first thing she did was going up to Aaron and tell him that she had a disagreement with her boyfriend that day on the phone, and that they broke up right then and there, and she was ready to talk about religion again! Aaron was in shock – is this really happening to me? As the summer actually went on, Minnie decided to give her life to Jesus as Lord and Savior, praise God! That was exciting to see the reaping of the harvest that had been planted beforehand. Coco and Rabbit – Aaron and Izzy At that same prayer meeting before Minnie broke up with her boyfriend, Aaron also prayed for Coco, a girl that Aaron and Izzy were both spending time with. While Aaron was just getting to know Coco, he prayed specifically that Coco would open the door for them to talk about spiritual things. Coco walks in right after Minnie and goes over to Aaron – “I was just thinking about the Afterlife today – can we talk about that?” Aaron grew up in a Christian household – as he shared with me – he never really – or struggled with the aspect of prayer – for him to experience the power of God working through prayer. Coco never made a decision to follow Christ throughout our time in China, but she ended up getting a Bible and got plugged in with long-term missionaries who were more than willing to follow up with her! We continue to pray for Coco and Rabbit – that picture is her default mode. Something God showed me – the testimony of the long-term missionaries. Softening/Tilling/Sowing/Reaping – hearing testimony from the long-termers (Moyers/Steve/Gideon) Speaking of long-term missionaries, we were encouraged to get to know of the long term work that had been going on in China and locally at our university. Gideon – IFES Associate General Secretary for Global Issues – Vice president of IFES. He is in charge of East Asia and is interested in Islamic countries and helping them to know God. Came and shared with us to get to know us, welcome us to IFES East Asia, and also cast vision for long-term work. Shared history of the Global Projects Steve would have never gotten there had it not been for Gideon. Hello, I am trying to arrange vehicle insurance. I have contacted A&L with regards to their car insurance. Hi. Recently i changed my address so i had to let the car insurance company know about that. But they charged(actually are willing to chage) me 423 pounds !! Yes, there's not a misspeling. It's 423 . As far as i ve seen, most people get charged no maximum than 50 pounds for this change. Also, there are no changes on my policy. I still have a garage, i still do the same mileage/year and so on. They even confirmed that there's no change in policy details except the new address. The new address it's in Manchester (central area) and before i lived in Bradford(UK). Now, in the mean time, i had a claim. If i would have found about this fee before, i would have cancel my insurance policy but now that i have a claim, i can't cancel it anymore and being refunded (as i paid the insurance for 1 year in one go, Not monthly). I found about this crazy 423 fee only now when i had this claim. You can't find anything about any fees related to changing the address neither on my policy papers nor on their website and online policy books. I suppose they considered this fee just as an administration fee. And i suppose they could have charged me even 10 000 pounds as an administration fee just because they can. I don't feel protected by the company anymore !! that's why it's an insurance company, to protect and take some risks out. The insurance company it's Admiral. I tryed to talk and explain them that this fee it's just nuts but they didn't agreed. The fee it's about 1/4 of the total insurance cost for 1 year. Maybe they try to take advantage of the fact that i can't cancel it (coz i have a claim in process) and i can't get refunded ? Any ideea how should i proceed ? I’m Eric Chen – I’m with Intervarsity at The University of Akron – I went to China for 6 weeks – We had a diverse group of students 14 students – West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, California, Pennsylvania (6 states) 4 staff – Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, California One girl had never been on a plane – or a train – and we did a week in Beijing for orientation – what will daily life look like – what does it mean to share the Gospel with those from a different culture. Coming out of Beijing, we had a 24 hour train ride – Staff Team John – from LA, pastor of a large multi-ethnic church in the city – He has always had a heart for Asia – especially SE Asia – as a staff team, we arrived a day early to share with one another. Corrie – International Student Ministry at University of Kentucky – She came because her specialty is working with International students and helping Americans bridge the gap and she led some classes on Cross Cultural skills. Christy – Undergraduate Campus Staff Member at University of Michigan – Dearborn – similar to Akron as a commuter school. Neither John nor Corrie had done undergraduate ministry (working with older students) – Christy and I had a good time helping them learn about working with angsty 19 year olds – sorry – you guys aren’t angsty… Steve – ex-stateside IV staff, now on loan to the Chinese movement, our receiving staff – has been there for 7 years! What was exciting was that none of us had any foreign mission trip experience (longer than 2 weeks) ever! The funny part about this picture is that we had spent a week in China already, and the staff team was already craving burgers… – As staff, we were supposed to teach about culture integration… and here we are at the American joint. Sitting at Lakers – you see internationals (like us) wander out of the shadows and see an American Restaurant – and wander in. Global Project style – Typically, they would pair student to student to engage in intense relationship building and learning one another’s’ culture. Recently, the Chinese Government said no, IV can’t come – even though iV had been coming for years. The vice president of the university had had an impactful time with a group of Canadian Christians back in the 80s – and it had always been in his mind and he had benefited from it. In the late 90s – a guy from IV had found this university and wanted to do a partnership here – and he was the guide to lead us through the front door. He thought – How can I get IV back – if you come back, you have to change your name – and he opened the back-door for us and helped us fly under the radar. Instead of being paired at the hip like former projects, our goal was to through social activities to build friendships. We were pulling off big events to have excuses to talk with Chinese students. Steve had no clue how many to expect. We did a kickoff event – 60-70 students showed up – and that is what we did – created opportunities to have conversations with Chinese students. As we built relationships with the Chinese students, we could really only talk about religion if they first “opened the door”, so to speak. So the best way to getting there was to just throw parties and socials so our students could have excuses to talk with Chinese students Like our first night on campus, when we threw a huge party for about 60 Chinese students Or culture class, where we learned about each other’s cultures – Corrie – sharing about ‘small talk’ – one thing we talked about was GRADES – in America, we don’t talk about grades – probably because of curve-killers! – But in China – they talk about grades – “We are proud when we score well!” Or like when we threw a Christmas party in July, not only to talk about Christmas, but do a gift exchange. You get the picture; we just did stuff to meet Chinese students. If I had the luxury of time, we’d probably spend at least an hour going through stories and pictures of what God did, but for now, I want to share just three stories of what God did this summer I had about 3000 pictures that I had narrowed down to 800. This was my small group (from L to R): Gordon, Heather, Elisabeth, me, Aaron, and Rachel Enter Gordon, Heather, and Aaron, who became friends with a girl named Minnie while going to Kentucky Fried Chicken. Our students were stripped of some of their basic means of communication. We have a common language – and we have texting, Facebook, cell phones. We were stripped of what we were used to. When we talk about sharing the gospel here in the states, we say if you can share with an 8 year old – you are golden. Now imagine talking to someone who can speak only about as well as an 8 year old – but can speak eloquently in their own language about politics and all kinds of things. Students had to face being stripped of most ways of relating with Chinese students Language Culture Interests Technology The challenge was to rely even more on God to make that change, and what better way to communicate our desire for that than through prayer? We prayed that God would open doors for us – put a small group together like mine – 10 o’clock at night – and we would pray – a lot. Some of the fruits of that. Put a small group of students who knew these barriers, and that prayer works, and you got a small group that started to pray and ask God to do some big things on campus. Minnie – here she is leading some of us Americans in Tai Chi. Minnie had been hanging out with her friend Bella, a Christian Chinese student at KFC with Gordon/Heather/Aaron when she started asking about religious beliefs. “I’m interested in knowing what you think!” Unless the student opens the door – you can’t just share with them. We could ask questions that might provoke deeper conversations. This was in the first week, so Gordon/Heather/Aaron were all excited to talk and have this open door, but as they talked more, it became apparent that Minnie was having trouble opening her heart because of a relationship with an Army man. If you are in the Army, you are not supposed to have any beliefs. As this happened, Gordon sensed that he should pray that a storm would rock Minnie’s life. As they walked out the door of KFC, a thunderstorm started rumbling in the distance. To this, Gordon was super excited and ran to tell our small group. “I knew something big was going to happen in Minnie’s life sometime soon” A few days later, the American team met together to pray for Chinese students right before a movie night. During that time, Aaron prayed specifically that God would break down the barrier between Minnie and Jesus, through any means possible. 30 minutes later, when the Chinese students started to arrive, Minnie arrived, and the first thing she did was going up to Aaron and tell him that she had a disagreement with her boyfriend that day on the phone, and that they broke up right then and there, and she was ready to talk about religion again! Aaron was in shock – is this really happening to me? As the summer actually went on, Minnie decided to give her life to Jesus as Lord and Savior, praise God! That was exciting to see the reaping of the harvest that had been planted beforehand. Coco and Rabbit – Aaron and Izzy At that same prayer meeting before Minnie broke up with her boyfriend, Aaron also prayed for Coco, a girl that Aaron and Izzy were both spending time with. While Aaron was just getting to know Coco, he prayed specifically that Coco would open the door for them to talk about spiritual things. Coco walks in right after Minnie and goes over to Aaron – “I was just thinking about the Afterlife today – can we talk about that?” Aaron grew up in a Christian household – as he shared with me – he never really – or struggled with the aspect of prayer – for him to experience the power of God working through prayer. Coco never made a decision to follow Christ throughout our time in China, but she ended up getting a Bible and got plugged in with long-term missionaries who were more than willing to follow up with her! We continue to pray for Coco and Rabbit – that picture is her default mode. Something God showed me – the testimony of the long-term missionaries. Softening/Tilling/Sowing/Reaping – hearing testimony from the long-termers (Moyers/Steve/Gideon) Speaking of long-term missionaries, we were encouraged to get to know of the long term work that had been going on in China and locally at our university. Gideon – IFES Associate General Secretary for Global Issues – Vice president of IFES. He is in charge of East Asia and is interested in Islamic countries and helping them to know God. Came and shared with us to get to know us, welcome us to IFES East Asia, and also cast vision for long-term work. Shared history of the Global Projects Steve would have never gotten there had it not been for Gideon. And they would have never gotten there without the local churches there. “We want people to come and share on campuses – because they will be the leaders.” In China – the best of the best apply and only about 30% get in. Part of it is the philosophy – we might do short-term work in conjunction with long-term work, but never short term for the sake of short term. The Far East project is the fruit of that. I appreciated what Gideon shared with us. It was encouraging to hear the partnership between Gideon and the house-churches. Esther – the girl on the right – was a lawyer in China – but felt led to OSU to get her Masters and PHD – she became a Christian there – and is now replacing Steve. Steve is going to Vancouver for a couple years to Regent College. Steve – ex-stateside IVCF staff (Baldwin Wallace), now doing long-term work in China. He went on a couple global projects, and after the second one was called to do long-term work there. At our university for 7 years, doing follow up and receiving short-term teams for the summer. He does a lot of follow-up – we understood that some would be in different phases of soil softening to reaping a harvest. Rhinehard is a long-term missionary teaching English at the University. It was encouraging to hear from him and his wife Cindy – and they don’t have children of their own, but these students have become like their adopted children. They have been praying for a long time that some would come to help them. He shared with us how we had been such an answer to prayer – there are people on the campus that they don’t know if they would have had the opportunity to meet, were it not for our team. It was encouraging for him and for us! Integral in long-term follow up of the work that happens Shared about how we’ve been an answer to prayer, both in softening the earth, tilling, sowing, and reaping the harvest! It used to be, 20 students paired with 20 students – but now, we had 14 students – and we listed all the students we had a good conversation with and where they are spiritually – we had 42 names on our board –and that would have never happened in previous projects. If there is anything that I would walk away with – the power of prayer that went into our work – the prayers of this church and others, Steve and Rhinehard, and us while we were there, God showed Himself to us through prayer. The challenge – we talked about reintegrating into American culture – we have this same common language and technologies that connect us – as we interact through all of that, will we lose the understanding of how God is the one who has to work through prayer?
