Its honestly so painful to me, the sheer amount of turmoil that Anakin has experienced in his life. If you really sit down and think about what he's been through, he truly is one of the most tragic characters in fiction.
Born a slave to a single mother on a backwater, forgotten, barren world with no opportunities (Sidenote as much as we laugh at the "I don't like sand" meme, it actually is a meaningful line. He hates that world, that life, wants to put it behind him. Can't help but think of the mother he abandoned there)
Forced to choose between freedom and leaving his mother to her fate. A ridiculous amount of pressure to put on a 9 year old
Loses the only father figure he's had, and ultimately the only person to truly show faith in him, almost immediately after finding him
Becomes a burden and disappointment to a reluctant, inexperienced master (Before you come at me, I ADORE Obi-Wans and Anakins relationship. I love their banter, and I truly think they loved one another ridiculously and my heart breaks at what they became. But I do think that Anakin felt like a burden and disappointment sometimes. Especially at the beginning, Obi-Wan only really takes him on out of duty to Qui-Gon, it wouldn't have been his own choice. He didn't believe in him the way Qui-Gon did. And because Obi himself was grieving and young and inexperienced, he didn't have the confidence to guide Anakin the way he should have. He falls back on the rules too much, after bending them to take him on in the first place. He's too strict with him, too harsh. He doesn't tell him how much he loved him until it's too late, which just adds to the angst)
Is constantly told that he needs to let go of his attachment to his mother whilst being plagued my dreams of her death.
Watches his mother die in his arms with the knowledge if only he could have done something sooner he could have saved her (and this is the moment I think, pivotally, that his capacity for the dark side becomes real. Not the moment when he kills the Tuscans in anger just after. But in this quiet moment of death. The moment that voice in his head starts burrowing like a worm "Not enough, more, better, faster, stronger". If he could just burn hotter, brighter, push harder, then no one else would die.)
Is thrust into a war at 19
Is entrusted with a 14 year old apprentice at 20. Loves her like family only to watch the order he gave up everything for, the order that let his mother die, the order that is the reason he cannot have a normal life with his wife, drive his little sister away from him.
Plagued to madness by visions of his wife dying. Goes insane to try to save her only to be her own downfall. Is cut into pieces and left to burn alive by his brother. Suffers excruciating pain being pieced back together. Is forced to live with the knowledge that he led to the love of his life's death, where every breath is a reminder of the monster he has become.
Becomes increasingly aware that his new master, the only person he has left, the person he betrayed everyone for, the person he trusted in his times of need and thought understood him, would toss him away without a second thought and replace him with Luke.
That smile when he takes off the mask and looks at Luke in Return of the Jedi means so much. It's so pure, and light and carefree for those few seconds. The first time we've ever seen him truly at peace. He is finally free from the pain.

In GTN chapter 36, Cytherea says “None of you have learned how to die gracefully. I learned over 10,000 years ago"
Do you know/have a theory as to how Cyth could have learned anything pre-resurrection? She was not one of the original lyctors present for the resurrection and it was only 10,000 years ago. It could be hyperbole but I am suspicious of the “over 10,000 years”.
Thank you so much for the ask! I wanted to take my time with it, I hope you didn't mind the wait.
I actually had been chewing on this with my most recent GtN reread. Bear with me as I cut and paste all the pieces that form my thoughts on this - hopefully it's somewhat coherent to read.
Could "over 10000 years" be a hyperbole? Maybe. A lot of characters tell the 'truth' as far as they believe it to be so even if it's factually incorrect. I don't think, however, that Tamsyn would make Cytherea say it in this specific way if it was a hyperbole. In GtN chapter 35 where Palamedes confronts Cytherea we get the following lines, which are what feed my intuition about this:
"Don't lie to me, please."
Dulcinea said, "I have never lied to any of you."
Cytherea has no reason to lie, especially not after being confronted by Palamedes. She tells him herself - she has been giving pieces of the truth and using those to manipulate the narrative. Because of this and because it's much more fun if it isn't a hyperbole I see no point to dismiss it as an emotional inaccuracy.
So let's say she is over 10,000 years old. How does that work?
First thing I went looking for while trying to figure this out was the question of Cytherea's birth. On the fandom wiki, it states that Cytherea was born into the established Seventh. I have been combing through the books, and I cannot find anything in canon that truly confirms this. What we do know of the timeline and her age is the following from HtN chapter 9:
"When they first brought her to Canaan House, I thought there'd been some mistake. - She was just shy of thirty then, I recall. -
-Was she the first gen, or second?"
"Second," said God. "Early second. We were still experimenting with getting the Sixth installation up and running. Some of the Houses were empty."
Mercymorn spoke up: "No. We had it running by then. Because Valancy was with us, and Anastasia."
-"Yes, you're right. We were all there to meet her. All sixteen of us -
'Some of the houses were empty' is the important line here, because in NtN John 5:4 Harrow describes how the resurrection happened:
-You resurrected some of them. You wake up fewer still. You start out with a few thousand, then, later, some hundred thousand, then millions, but never more than millions. You teach them how to live all over again. You teach yourself. -
The houses are named in order of resurrection. The Seventh, then, comes after the Sixth, which should make it obvious that by the time Cytherea arrived the Sixth was already established - or the Seventh wouldn't have existed. Yet, for some reason, for John this is not as obvious. I have found what could be an explanation in HtN chapter 2:
He said, "No. I haven't truly resurrected anyone in ten thousand years. But at that time... I set many aside, for safety... and I've often felt bad about just keeping them as insurance. They've been asleep all this myriad, Harrow, -
The difference wouldn't be as obvious to John, because he didn't resurrect the houses one by one. He resurrected a chunk of the earth's population, kept them dormant, and piece by piece woke them up to populate the houses. Beyond the fact that Cytherea is never said to have been born on the Seventh in canon (again, to my knowledge - please correct me if I missed it), the following from HtN chapter 2 really seals the deal in my eyes that she was not born on the Seventh but rather woken up for the Seventh.
The emperor said gently, "She needs to go home, Harrow."
"That was never her home," he said.
You did not look. "And will the Seventh House accept her?"
I also considered John might feel Cytherea belongs at home with the other Lyctors and therefore denies that the Seventh is her home, but then remembered the following from the same chapter:
He said, "No Lyctor has ever returned home, once we understood the reprecussions... no Lyctor except one, who knew I would come to intercept her for that very reason."
He is talking about how Harrow cannot go home to the Ninth, and referring to Cytherea going home by returning to Canaan house located on earth. John also talks about the kind of people he resurrected in NtN John 5:4:
-We'll get them all back... some of them, anyway... or at least, the ones I want to bring back. Anyone I feel didn't do it. Anyone I feel had no part in it. Anyone I can look at the face of and forgive. -
Part of the same chapter I included above in combination with this one make me itchy almost. Harrow says 'You teach them how to live all over again.' That almost feels like it should be people who recently learned how to live. Like John only resurrected kids.
Think about it. He resurrects his loved ones and ones he can forgive. People who did not take part in the destruction of earth in his eyes. Who other than children could he really be talking about? Children, babies, who have no power to decide or influence to exert, who - even if they did have the power - do not have the capacity to understand the consequences of their actions. Whose memories will be easiest to erase because there is so little to begin with.
It then also makes sense why there were two generations of Lyctors. The population he woke up had to grow up into adults first. Why else would he have half a band of Lyctors trying to settle all of the Houses? If he was able to pick adults worthy of resurrection, he would have been able to pick adults capable of establishing his houses and becoming his hands and gestures.
One final point that drives this home is the following from the very beginning of GtN in chapter 7 when Teacher tells the Ninth about Dulcinea's condition:
"Dulcinea Septimus was not meant to live to twenty-five,"-
Dulcinea's hereditary disease is the same as Cytherea's. John did not know she was sick when she first was brought to Canaan house, which means that when he resurrected her, she must have been young enough to not be actively dying yet. Perhaps a toddler or a child who had been sick for some time - long enough to know what it feels like to slowly be dying.
So, all in all, my answer is that Cytherea was not born on the Seventh. I am not sure where the idea that the second generation was born on their planets of origin came from, but I honestly doubt any of them were born instead of woken. Cytherea claiming to have learned something 10,000 years ago would be a great way for Tamsyn to give us just enough to figure it out - this is, after all, the same author who gave us the big reveal of the second book in the first sentence of the first book of her series.

Tumblr media
"Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!"
Your hand held out a makeshift rock as a smug grin was making its way into your face because you knew rock was always the superior.
Or so you thought.
Grinning, your eyes quickly shifted to the other hand that held out the complete opposite of yours, and the smile on your face was immediately slapped off as you groaned out loudly.
"HA! I WIN!"
Kangin proudly exclaimed while your eyes narrowed at him in annoyance as he snatched the bag of cheap yet fulfilling snacks of your other hand.
Scoffing and muttering cusses at the 5"8 man, you retorted
"B-BUT THIS IS cheating!"
You told as you crossed your arms and slightly jutted out your bottom lip forming a small pout as you chose an alternative route of rather using the emotional bargain method, one that always worked from your end as no one was able to resist your sorrow glint eyes. Fake sorrow.
Cute. He thought but then again it wasn't just anybody in front of you, no.
This was Lee Kangin , your very best friend from your childhood. You being born in Incheon and also being a fan of football since a young age even to the extent of you also being able to have a talent in playing the game, it was as if the stars were lined for the both of you to become practically soulmates.
Though you both always laughed at the way you became friends because him accidentally knocking you out cold one day when practicing for football and you woke up wanting to actually murder the person who caused you to be on bed rest for a few days meaning no football as well meant as though someone had actually just murdered you. (tiny flashback ahead)
But despite the rough first impression the boy made, he'd come in the same day later after you gained your consciousness to apologize with a bouquet of beautifully assorted flowers and a handful of snacks, which to his credit, was suggested by his mother.
It wasn't like he didn't feel sorry, he was sorry, guilty in fact but what could the poor 9 year old do other than bring his sincerest apologies to you.
And when he did, you couldn't help but instantly want to forgive him as you saw the solemn look on his face with the guilt practically being overwhelming in his eyes, heck you think you may have even spotted tears, as he took in the bandage wrapped around your little head.
To his utmost surprise, you chuckled as his head was down and he looked up to see you with a small grin on your face
"I guess I could forgive you."
He looked taken aback, even in his little 9 year old mind he thought it was hard to earn anyone's consideration for forgiveness let alone forgiveness itself.
"But you have to promise me one thing."
Curiously he softly spoke out with a small fearful tone as though he was scared you'd be asking for a huge favor one he wouldn't be able to fulfil
"W-what?"
With a toothy grin you finally said
"Be my football practice buddy from now on."
You held out your hand as though it was some sort of business agreement you were proposing and in a way it was at least in your childhood nature.
As he took in the words he couldn't help but smile widely as his eyes narrowed and his full cheeks bunched up and he exclaimed
"Deal!"
And alas that was the start of your great friendship with Lee Kangin.
Raising a brow at you, he knew the tactics you were playing and despite having fallen into that very trap many times, he also knew better than to give in at this time, and as he held the bag in his hand ready to dive into its content any minute, he retorted mockingly while rolling his eyes
"You were the one who suggested we settle this over 가위 (kai) 바위 (bai) 보 (bo) and you lost so quit being a sore loser and the emotional puppy eyes won't work either."
Instantly the small pout and the adorable begging eyes vanished as you narrowed your eyes at him in the offense.
Finally after what felt like he had been digging around for ages he found the bottle of strawberry milk he had been wanting to drink and smiled at it as if it was his greatest achievement till date even though he was an upcoming football player.
As he dismissed the other snacks to the side to be eaten later, a mischievous thought occurred to you and before you could think about it more, you said fuck it and just did what your ultimately hungry stomach and slightly bitter heart thought of.
You grabbed the bag of snacks and made a dash for it, you knew you stood no chance in terms of stamina or even in speed but you knew one thing and that was when you do something that catches the other off guard, no matter how lacking you were in terms of skills compared to them, you immediately gained the upperhand at least for the first few minutes.
Kangin's eyes widened and his jaw dropped almost comically as he saw you make a run for it and he too made a split second decision,
"HEY! THAT'S MINE, WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Screaming loudly, his deep voice boomed across the wide field that the other players had been practicing at, they ended up turning their heads at the colorful choice of words including the captain's as well.
He dropped the strawberry milk bottle on the ground while gulping as much as he could before he had to ultimately drop it and began chasing you at full speed. You burst out laughing, probably sounding like a villian but who cares, you thought while trying to make your way towards the doors that led out to a common lounging area.
Heungmin looked at the loud screams from where he'd been standing a bit further away in a conversation with Seungho and began laughing himself when he saw you running away being chased by a furious Kangin, even he could tell you'd done something to irk the other and it was working.
"Y/N pulled that shit again, I can't believe Kangin fell for it again." Seungho said as his eyes followed you almost reaching the doors and saw how Kangin was almost just behind you, he let out his own chuckle and shook his head at your tactics.
The others of course knew you, maybe some being even more interested in you, but you'd pretty much known them since the time Kangin joined the National Team, you had been there when he made it and even given him the biggest congratulations that you could, because after all your best friend had been able to accomplish his goals at least, quite literally and also philosophically. (no puns intended)
You were introduced to the others and overall they were all friendly with you, some even began seeing you as their little sister and to top it off you also a football player as you were midfielder in your college team so you got along even more well with them. Yet you knew you saw most of them as your older brothers however you felt different for one player.
You don't think it was normal to feel those butterflies, you don't think it was normal to start feeling a pool of warm red forming in your cheeks, you don't think was normal to gulp and your heartbeat increasing as though you'd just ran for your fucking life. And worse this was the first time a guy scratch that a person made you feel this way.
And you certainly don't think it was normal that the reason behind all that had been Cho Guesung.
The very attractive striker of the South Korean National Team.
And that had been your big oh no moment, the minute, the second you realised who was the cause of that state.
You felt so fucking stupid.
Just as you were about to reach the doors, you felt two familiar arms wrap around your waist from behind as the bag left your hand and flew upwards, due to the sudden movement you squealed loudly and gasped when you were lifted into the air.
"Let me down! KANGIN! YAH!"
You began giggling as you suddenly felt him take a spin, it almost felt like you were a kid again and your father was making you play flying games, you know the ones where you pretend to fly in the air.
You weren't exactly a small person, 5'8 for a person wasn't really short, but then again the stamina of these men was no joke.
"Not until you apologize and buy me a whole crate of strawberry milk." Kangin taunted you as he too chuckled from your contagious laughter.
Both of you in your own little antics, to an outsider they'd think you were a couple, at least to those who thought their first assumptions were right.
"You are blocking the way."
A deep voice announced loudly with a hint of bitterness. Both of you immediately stopped, recognizing who it was, and opened your eyes widely as Kangin let go of you, you quickly stood beside him and a sudden wave of dizziness you guess from all the spinning hit you as you stumbled slightly, Kangin wrapping one arm around your waist again and pulling you onto his side so you could lean into him for some support.
The figure in front of you had his hand out when he saw you stumble but quickly put it aside, scoffing a bit after as he saw Kangin's hand on your waist, he went back to his face of indifference that had been holding for a while before anyone saw the scoff and annoyance.
However, it was too late as both Kangin and you saw the scowl. While you moved from your temporary support pretending to dust yourself, you nervously laughed and straightened your shirt
"Sorry," You told sincerely trying to muster a small apologetic smile at Guesung as Kangin rolled his eyes at his hyung's behavior as though he was used to it. He was used to it, more than he wished he was.
Guesung began feeling a small pit of guilt form in his stomach as he saw you look away in embarrassment before he could even make eye contact with you, mentally being annoyed at himself for having thoughts of wishing you'd have at least looked at him.
He quickly shook his head before he could get more wrapped up in thoughts about you. How pretty you currently looked under the daylight with somewhat messy hair up in a pony tail with a few strands out and cheeks slightly flushed from laughing, at least that's what he concluded but little did he know he was indeed the culprit of the flushed cheeks and nervous state of yours.
"It's fine, just don't be in the way next time." He muttered quietly as he held one strap of his duffle bag and his eyes traveled back to the both of you, he quickly walked past you, tightening his grip as he heard Kangin let out a snort.
Just cause he didn't know, obviously yet devastatingly, didn't mean no one else knew about your little infatuation. Though Kangin protested to that being the label of what you felt,
It's not an infatuation Y/N it's basically a crush at this point, maybe even the big L word.
You remember mentally and physically groaning at that and buried your hands in a swirl of emotions.
You let out a sigh of exhaustion and a hint of sadness as Guesung brushed past the both of you while Kangin snorted and once again rolled his eyes
"Can you believe that guy? There's a whole ass football field of space to move and he chose this way to go, as if it were on purpose don't you think?" He asked with a hint of teasing as he looked over at you and you now rolled your eyes and retorted back to him
"Shut up, you were making too much noise anyways."
You playfully hit him on his arm and then began to fix your hair which had became a mess and wanted to throw yourself off a cliff as you realised you looked like an absolute disaster in front of your-
"ME? you're the one who was being a bitter loser and stole MY food?!?" Kangin feigned in fake offence, his eyes held amusement as to how you were gaslighting him at the moment.
"AND you made me look like a fool in front of him."
You narrowed your eyes as you whispered harshly taking a quick glance at Guesung to make sure he wouldn't hear but he would not anyway as he was literally 100 feet from where you both stood.
Kangin looked at you in even more amusement as he saw you take a peek at his hyung, grinning with mischief and teased "Oh don't worry Y/N ah you'll never look like fool in front of him besides it is your true nature, embrace it you know."
He raised his hands and put quotation marks in the air "Self love no matter how much of an idiot you are." He finished with a shit eating grin that made you playfully pinch his ear.
"Ouch! Damn dude that hurts!" "What did you say again huh?"
"You are an id-" You twisted his ear a bit harder "I MEAN YOU ARE PERFECT OW! FUCK THAT HURTS LET ME GO!"
Smirking with pride you let go of his ear as he put his hand up to it to caress it gently from the needed but undeserved violence "Sheesh it's not like you actually will look like a fool anyways at least never to hyung so I don't know why you stress out so much."
He muttered as he caressed his ear and narrowed his eyes at you while cussing you in his mind geez this tiny human knows how to hurt (you still wonder how you seemed tiny because you were practically the same height but you suppose it could be regarding the fact that he was a few months older than you)
You raised an eyebrow, almost in amazement yet disbelief as you scoffed
"He HATES me Kangin might I remind you."
Your voice lowered towards the end as you thought about how unlike the other teammates and guys on the team, Guesung never seemed to have liked you.
(small flashback)
It's not like he would go out of his way to show his clear distaste in you, rather he always wore a mask of indifference or just merely ignored you whenever you were around.
You let out a snort at Kangin's words and what he was trying to imply as you remembered when they came back home after their FIFA World Cup matches, and how you'd been asked to help for the welcome party along with some other close ones of the other players and you being well you jumped to help as you were excited to not only meet your platonic soulmate after months but also excited to congratulate Guesung and tell him how proud you were of him, (as well as the other players ofc)
You'd worn one of your favourite outfits which was particularly red in colour in representation of the team which not only suited you so gracefully but was also comfortable to wear and you were already running late so you did some light makeup which would highlight your beautiful facial features as well as an easy yet pretty hairstyle. You had felt pretty confident that day ready because you yourself did look amazing, as usual.
You had reached the place and were waiting and helping around the staff when they came in one by one from the utter chaos they had faced outside the hotel as well as the airport. Your eyes darted towards Guesung and you couldn't help it, whenever he was anywhere you'd always find yourself taking secret glances at him, despite him doing the same, you relished those moments.
Your whole face lit up as you made your way towards them, poor Kangin being left as an after thought but it's not like you wouldn't meet him eventually you just saw Guesung first so you decided to congratulate him first.
When Guesung had stepped into the hotel lounge he couldn't help but scan the room searching for a particular individual who he had wanted to see after so long. He couldn't help it but admit how much he'd missed you. He'd thought about you a lot when he was in Qatar and was hoping you'd have watched how he played, watched how he scored. His heart always seemed to oppose him but for once he could mutually agree with what his heart was feeling for, yearning for.
And when his secret wish came true, you coming towards him, looking very much real rather than on a screen from the countless videocalls you'd done with Kangin and even some of the others even though you rarely talked to him despite wanting to but always being so so feeblish that you instead just wished him the best and would not talk much, he knew from that point there really was no turning back.
His feelings were very much real and he very much felt all that towards you and only you.
You stopped in front of him a few feet away dressed in their team colours which he observed and oh my God.
It felt as though his mouth had lost its ability to form anything that he had to take a gulp, you noticed his eyes slowly taking you in from head to toe and couldn't help but almost faint. You felt weak hearted, this boy wasn't good for your heart you concluded. But then again, you always craved ruination.
He on the other hand felt no better, he felt his heart pick up as his eyes drunk you in his, mind already getting intoxicated with the thoughts of your face, oh your beautiful face.
And when you beamed at him with the very stars in your eyes as though the Gods themselves had plucked them individually from the galaxy and placed them to make them twinkle everytime you'd beamed.
"Congratulations Guesung." You told still with the same gleam.
"You really played well for the team and those goals back to back were so fucking awesome, especially the second one, it was absolutely spectacular"
You finished fangirling as you recalled gasping in both awe and shock when he scored those goals against Ghana and despite them having ultimately lost the match, you think he played it marvelously and now wanting to cringe because you felt as though that still wasn't enough for what really was going on in your mind, and even though he had felt exhausted, your words were enough to make him for the first time, in front of you because God knows and maybe his teammates, the countless times he's secretly smiled just at the mere thought of you, smile at you as his face relaxed with content.
Yes, you heard it and saw it right, he was smiling AT YOU and not only that BECAUSE of YOU.
Internally you were freaking out and your eyes slightly widened while you try to act calm on the outside as he spoke up
"Thank you, really, it means a lot."
He still remained smiling at you while you stood there trying not to freak out even more because despite those being simple words they really hit the feelings for you.
And really on the other part, he felt no different, those words did mean a lot to him, more than they should have, more than it would to a normal person hearing those words because frankly hearing those words from someone that has an exceptional place in your heart means a whole fucking lot.
Before you could really say anything again, you felt yourself being tackled by someone and immediately your mind quite literally snapped out of its daze and focused on trying to not lose balance as the individual now fully wrapped his large arms around you.
"I MISSED YOU SO MUCH YOU HAVE NO IDEA!"
Kangin sobbed out as he hid his face in the crook of your neck and you couldn't help but chuckle and chose to just go with the flow while you pulled your arms out of the uncomfortable embrace to now comfortably wrap them around his large frame.
Guesung's face dropped, and the smile on his face vanished before he could even comprehend, of course he knew you were not particularly there for him, you were friends with most of the players and Kangin but he couldn't help the small selfish desire wishing you'd have come up to him and instead tackled him just the Kangin did to you, he'd be ready to embrace you, just how you were embracing Kangin.
The small irk of irritation began forming again when he noticed how tightly Kangin had held you, it was always like that, it was normal between you both. His jaw tensed as he looked away and he straightened his broad shoulders as he walked away without even soaring you another glance.
You noticed him as your head was over Kangin's shoulder and as expected you also took note of how his expression dropped which made a small frown settle on your face.
He was just smiling a minute ago, what suddenly happened?
It wasn't like it was your fault really, it was neither's fault because after all love is what makes a fool of us right?
Too bad this time, it decided to make you both the fools.
(end of small flashback)

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.
A few stats:
110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)
clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only
from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])
~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand
~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].
[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]
This doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows [e.g. I re-watched Love Sick, My Ride the Series, Semantic Error, ITSAY/IPYTM, Our Dating Sim at least 3 times lol, and anything with a s2 I re-watched s1 to prep, among others, watched Fujoshi Ukkari Gei no Kokuru (2019) for the first time] or non-QL [e.g. Heartstopper s2, Our Flag Means Death s2, Taskmaster s. 15 & 16, Uncanny Counter s2, One Piece s1, etc.] but does include films as well as shows, though I don't count special episodes separately (so Wedding Plan counts once, though I watched both the show and the special).
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 20 Shows I'd Recommend From This Year:
Moonlight Chicken
Our Dating Sim
Bed Friend
The Eighth Sense
La Pluie
Sing My Crush
Tokyo in April Is...
Wedding Plan
Laws of Attraction
I Cannot Reach You
I Feel You Linger in the Air
What Did You Eat Yesterday S2
I Became the Lead in a BL Drama
If It's With You
Love in Translation
Our Dining Table
My Personal Weatherman
My Beautiful Man: Eternal
My School President
Be My Favorite
+10 I liked but I would only recommend with caveats:

Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.
The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.
It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!
Full list under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it aired but may be slightly off].

Bouncing ideas back with Pixelsss (btw feel free to tag me if you want I don't mind)
I FULLY AGREE with the theory that the previous chief doctor is the Ominous Voice and the fact that he didn't resign willingly that was literally like the first thing I thought.
Okay, I saw someone on like... Steam discussion? Who pointed out that the statue is actually Hippocrates (I actually don't remember the name they said but I googled it) and the oaths specifically for physicians are attributed to him. It would make sense why the Voice (I am NOT even gonna try to spell his name without reference) says he is a blind judge, and that WE need to be his witness. Because we are present in the moment, we can see the wrongdoings of the perpetrators and attribute each broken oath to each member of the staff. I feel like it's also worth mentioning that Friedrich says "there he is again" which could be just a reference about how many of those statues are around the Klinikum, but also maybe not?
NOW ABOUT THE PLAYER THEORY
The reason why I LOVE the theory that we are Joey (younger version of Joseph) is because:
1. In my opinion, it adds depth and sympathy for Joseph's character. Look at his younger self, so curious, so impressionable, so willing to help. And here he is now, so corrupt and so fueld by his own wrath.
2. I ADORE the theme of witnessing the corruption of your future self, coming face to face with the monstrosity that you've become. Joey doesn't necessarily realize this, but we do. And it's so AAUUAHAUAHA7AGAUAGAUAGAYAGAYAGAGAYAGAYAYAY
Of course, this theory is not perfect at all. Specifically in how that would work with the loophole and where it all started (I have a similar problem in Little Nightmares 2 because it's near impossible to pinpoint where the timeloop starts). The thing about Joseph not recognizing Joey I addressed in my previous post, but the reason why Joey wouldn't recognize himself in Joseph is because... well, I dunno, he just wouldn't? I wouldn't be able to recognize my future self either tbf. Hm, let's assume that Joey is somewhere in the ages of 21-22 like I initially did... so that would make at least a 9 year difference. And they do say that power changes people.
And this is where I'm going to yap about Joey and Joseph.
While Joseph is still a massive asshole and an abuser, but Joey isn't... look at him, he is so curious about everything, he comments on random things he may find interesting and pokes his nose into every corner of the Klinikum (based on my own recent playthrough of doing exactly that). He's so eager to help, seasoning the soup for the birthday guy, finding Dokhu's plushie and giving him a little crown as a birthday present, agreeing to help nurse Helene not because he exactly needs something from her, but just because of how relentlessly she's working to the point of neglecting everything else. How he feels sympathetic for Astrid and even for Wolfram (who does not deserve his sympathy that mf just tripped he can handle it). And yet... his older self is so egocentric, so ignorant and willing to harm others. So what exactly happened?
I think that it's because Joey later on felt unappreciated, ostracized and ignored. He was young, he recently moved to a new country and he's just fresh out of university. He has ideas that have potential, but no one is listening. So he becomes angry. He fights his way to the top, first making Friedrich resign, then beating everyone else to the spot and doing his best to charm the other staff so he'd be accepted. So of course, when he fought so hard to get to where he is, when someone starts to question him and tell him how wrong he is, it triggers a fight or flight response, and Joseph is used to fighting by now. Is he still more than old enough to understand the gravity of his actions and how badly he is hurting people not only physically but emotionally and mentally? Absolutely. Should he have prioritized the feelings of his staff, the other people he had to step over, his patience? Absolutely, he has the ability to, we've seen how sympathetic he can be. And yet he is so blinded by his wrath at the rejection he faced early on, that all of that goes forgotten. The way he says everything, how no one dies at the Klinikum, how the dental clinic is something the medical community should thank him for, how Astrid's paper criticizing his research is thrown away in the trashyard... it all screams of someone who is still seeking praise and validation which he didn't get before, but this time not using the knowledge he genuinely has, not using his kindness and compassion and ability to work with people, but instead using vile means that will secure his position and the things he desires. He found many, many loopholes to exploit in the system and he took that opportunity (ha, get it?) to get what he wanted, no matter how much harm he will bring and to whom.
So poor Joey ends up as the subject of that loophole. He has to face first hand how much destruction and abuse his older self brought onto the Klinikum. Just how many times has he been harmed to the point of death but has woken up again and again just to suffer more? And it doesn't matter who you are, patient, just a trainee or an employee. Unless you're willing to exploit and abuse others, you have no chance in this system. Wolfram looks completely normal at first, because he was already an abuser, his later forms only reflect how ugly he is inside. Randolph himself looks completely normal at first, but later on he is distorted worse of them all.
Anne is constantly getting shocked and will pass out if the system is shut down, yet smiles sadistically when she puts another, someone lower in power than her through the same treatment.
Sabine has the wounds from the torturous device that she uses on someone who is, again, lower in power than her, yet still puts it on them because she can't face the fact that doctor Randolph is a corrupt man. She gets salty when you don't follow her, but no matter how many times you try to run away, she doesn't attack you. She says that you're holding up well, that you did well and so on and so forth, because she just hasn't realized that this is abuse that she is going through and putting another through.
There is Hauser who saw what was happening, who knew about all the wrongs of the staff of the Klinikum but chose to cower and hide away in the attic, pretending to be ignorant, ignoring the cries of those who were suffering in favor of saving his own skin.
Wolfram took advantage of the poor patients, people who were supposed to be under his care, and when confronted with his crimes, he realized that nobody really cared. No one took the patients seriously aside from the pesky strict nurse who'd probably filed complaints against him. So, realizing that his deeds went unpunished he simply continued doing what he did for his own twisted pleasure and desire to control and exploit those below him.
Sauer was responsible for the food of the patients, arguably one of the most important things that contributes to a person's health, yet he still choose to be sloppy with it, causing more harm than good. Forced to boil alive in a pot, he still doesn't get anything, and continues being a bitch to patients and serving them food which will only make things worse just because of how bitter he is that such a "tiny mistake" led to this much suffering on his end.
And Randolph himself. Blinded by his own feelings, he neglects and ignores the feelings of those around him, only caring about his own success, only caring about validation and being noticed, proving everyone who doubted him wrong. And at the end, he is forced to face not only his own trauma, but the trauma he repeatedly put other through, distorting him into the horrible monstrosity that he became on the inside.
Astrid cared about her patients, but she also cared too much to try and hold other staff members, other authority accountable for their mistakes and heinous actions. And what did she get in return? A horrifying fate, to put it lightly. And even STILL, even after what Joseph has done to her, she is willing to talk. She hopes to see him again, to confront him about everything, to try her best to resolve this peacefully. But alas.
(Her phrase "You are not Joseph" would also be an incredible play on my interpretation/au? because yes, Joey isn't Joseph, he's not the monster that he may or may not grow up to be.)
Helene cares about her patients way more than about anything else, she just wants to make sure that they're if not healthy than at least comfortable with the little conditions she has to work with, and therefore, because she isn't that much of a threat, she's left as she is.
I completely forgot what was even the point of all of that while writing LMAO
Oh yes, maybe the moment Joey ends up in the Klinikum was the exact moment when he already began heading down the wrong path (based on how sarcastic he acts sometimes and how willing he is to disobey whose higher in power than him). So to be forced to see what his future were to look like, and not only that but to experience the harm he's would do to patients and staff first hand, it reminds him of what being a medical worker is really all about. It's not about the groundbreaking research, it's not about making a name for yourself in the medical community. And so in the end, Joey uses the same loophole that Joseph had used all this time against him, sending him down one last time, killing that abusive prick in himself.
Okay, I've rambled so much about this theory that it almost looks like I'm heavily advocating for others to subscribe to it. I'm not, I'm just on a creative roll as of later and so that's what caused me to imagine so much based on that theory and minor details. There's still the stuff I mentioned earlier that wouldn't make this theory work with Joseph and Joey not recognizing one another, and with the wording the Voice uses in our final confrontation with Joseph, he tells us how the doctor's wrath is affecting everyone, "including you," the player. That single phrase doesn't make much sense in that theory, but at the same time, Friedrich's other phrase about "I'm not your enemy. Well, perhaps... a part of me is" WOULD make sense in this theory. He's not an enemy to Joey, but he is an enemy to and in the eyes of Joseph.
All that being said, I would actually prefer for the game not to get an expansion or dlc with explanation of this stuff, because I feel like it's much more interesting to see different interpretations built on the core idea and theme of the game, which is the abuse and mistreatment of patients.
Also, a way smaller headcanon which could apply no matter the theory you personally believe is that our player has a deep ass voice based on the... erm... grunts? From the beginning of the game where we fall from the ceiling.
Also these rambles are not going to be a frequent thing (I HOPE) because these ideas are all I've had since first watching a playthrough, later on playing the game myself and then writing a thing for the game (yes it is about the Trash Collector and Joey. No I don't wanna talk about it yet. Unless you ask really nicely :)), so once I've told all that's on my mind I will probabaly go back to lurking. This was quite frankly unnecessary and I'm not even sure about posting it in the main tag but to be fair, I think I'll do it at least for the sake of categorization.

some facts about Kim Kitsuragi
- one cigarette a day. there's no individual on this earth who would keep to a ritual like that that takes so much self control except the type of person who will do everything by their internal schedule until the day they die. (source: i drink one decaf coffee every morning. i have heart issues- even decaf is probably more than i should have. so I limit myself to just one, in the morning, even if its not very good, because it's part of my routine)
- the driving gloves. bad textures begone (source: i wear gloves a lot too for this very reason)
- the jacket (source: not one autistic person alive doesn't have an article of clothing or accessory they wear every single day because its comforting to have that stability and choosing new outfits is stress you don't need every day)
- the way he deals with emotions. its mostly compartmentalization, with very little outward expression, and even if he's sympathetic its generally in a distant and factual way that doesn't rely on pathos (source: autistic people often have difficulty even telling what emotions they're having at any given time, so telling how someone else is feeling is even harder. usually we default to a benefit of the doubt, and pinpoint factual information as comfort)
- the notebook (source: autism often manifests as a one-track mind. its difficult to remember small details of events, or events at all, if we're thinking about something else at the time. the notebook serves as both a grounding tool to help him focus on the task at hand and a way to reference details he normally wouldn't recollect, as well as helping with his aphantasia)
- "let's focus on the case, detective." (source: again, autistic people tend to have a one track mind. I often find myself "conversation stacking," which is when you remember old topics of conversation and bring them back around in order to finish discussing them. autistic people do this because our thoughts can be easily overwhelmed by wildly shifting circumstances, so we try to maintain that focus. kim is always focused in the case because if he thinks about something else (and switching focus is hard) he knows it'll be hard to get himself back on track. hence also why you can lead him on these wild tangents- once he's in, he's in, and he will see it to the end until you can circle back, because nothing is more irritating to an autistic person than leaving something unfinished. I often drink too much because I hate leaving my glass still partway full)
- special interest in MCs (source: look at this torque dork and tell me that isn't a special interest)
- the Kimball Incident (source: you know he hyperfocused on that one case for a whole 9 months. there's no way anyone but an autistic person could manage to focus and train so hard on a single new skill for an undercover mission. he hates it now also because sometimes when you hyperfocus you end up burnt out on the interest when it finally fades. I hate looking at old fandom stuff cause I immersed myself so hard in it for months at a time)
- Harry. him and Kim are adhd/autism solidarity (source: nothing gets me out of my comfort zone like an adhd person. I love being around them because I can let them lead me around without having to focus too hard on all the stuff they're able to focus on at once. also, every adhd/autism relationship has that subtle push/pull of one person getting side tracked and the other letting them go on the tangent but then circling back around. its kind of magic)
- look at the way he stands. look at his stance (source: I also stand like that)
now with this evidence before the jury i present a theory- that kims decision to transfer to the 41st was actually the most insane declaration of love he could've possibly done. he is willing to uproot his entire years-long comfort and stability because one guy showed him something different. we don't do this lightly. if an autistic person changes their schedule for you in any capacity, they're basically proposing to you. mans got it down BAD

Chenya x Riddle
Chenya x Riddle relationship headcanons
Okay, so you know the song "It's a wonderful cat's life"? That's basically their dynamic to me lol. This is one of my favorite ships for Riddle because I like the childhood friends to lovers trope, and I like Chenya as a character, but we don't really know much about him so some stuff will be made up kdfjds.
We know their first meeting was through Riddle's window, when him and Trey introduced themselves and took Riddle out to play and eat some sweet treats. Just,, that is already so cute and romantic lol, it's such a classic! The princess (Riddle) stuck on a tower meeting his prince (Chenya) through the window >< And his mother sadly prohibited him from seeing the other boys anymore :'( so it's a forbidden romance! But fear not, Chenya doesn't even need a long braid of hair to climb, his unique magic already allows him to float and become invisible so he can easily infiltrate Riddle's room! (which, thinking of… him getting his unique magic by 9 years old is quite young 🤔 but they showed it like that on the manga, maybe because he's a beastman and not a human he's more magic-inclined?)
Following that line of thought, I like to think that it was Chenya who fell for Riddle first! Always seeking to be beside him, for some reason the kid was so fun to tease, and he seemed quite lonely so he developed some sort of affection towards him. At first it was just friendly but as the years passed he slowley realized that his feelings were starting to shift towards something more romantic. Obviously Riddle too always looked forward to his visits; although he didn't like Chenya startling him by appearing out of nowhere, in the end he could always count on the cat boy to get a giggle out of him (and I want to believe that if Chenya stuffs something in his pockets, it dissapears with him so maybe he would bring biscuits and stuff from Trey's bakery to him lol).
Now, when going into RSA, Chenya was away for a full year before Riddle went to Sage Island as well. During this period, Riddle would have time to introspect -he misses both Chenya and Trey, but why are his feelings towards each of them different? Aren't they supposed to be both his friends? Still, even if he unconsciously already knew, it would take him a looong time to accept it, considering this is all still pre-overblot.
With Riddle getting into NRC, they would become close once again and Chenya could visit him more often without needing to hide from his mother (although he still needs to hide from authorities when tresspassing the school's gates lol). During this period, I think Chenya would let him be. Even if he's reckless, he knows when to not overstep a boundary. By this I mean… He wouldn't act on his feelings towards Riddle (maybe even going out with other people in the meantime to forget about him? oh the angst-).
It would still take one year more, after Riddle's overblot, for him to do an actual introspection and accept his feelings towards Chenya. Now, it's not easy for him. He already knows he likes him, then what? Should he try to pursue a relationship? Give up on it? Trey would become his advisor in this sort of situation, and given that he's also friends with Chenya, he would already be aware of the catboy's feelings for the younger boy, so he would encourage Riddle to give it a chance.
With all this said, it would be Riddle the one to confess; Chenya wouldn't have expected it, but of course he's happy and quickly accepts. Once they're both dating, the relationship would develop slowly but surely, starting with baby steps. First starting with little dates in more private places of the Heartslabyul gardens, then maybe moving to other locations around Sage Island.
I think Riddle would still be hesitant about having dates back home in the Rose Queendom, because they might run into one of his mother's acquaintances, not to mention his mother herself. But Chenya would introduce him to his own family first. Since cats usually have many kittens, I like to imagine that Chenya would have at least some siblings and they would all adore Riddle (and would love to mess with him lol, but Chenya is there to protect him -only he can annoy his boyfriend).
However, I don't think Riddle would be the type to date someone out of a whim, so when deciding to date Chenya he already knew sooner or later he would have to confront his mother. He just needs time, is all! After finishing higschool he would tell her about his decision and if she doesn't approve of it… well, he already has a family where he can make himself at home.
Bonus: a doodle :D thanks for asking about my rare pair, the world needs more content of these two.

3, 6, 7, 9, 13, 19, 22, 24, 25, for VEN
Tumblr media
What is your OCs fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?
In his current state? Probably his selflessness. He gives too much to people and has a hard time drawing lines if it's someone he deeply cares about. Case in point, letting Naida more or less railroad the entire family into chasing the Fountain of Youth. In his defense, Naida isn't really someone you can win fights against, but considering the dangerous nature of the voyage, one would think he should have fought against it a lot harder. I do think he's aware of it, but not in a way he can actively check, because it's a lot of him overcompensating for the way he used to be and the things he's done. So I guess a larger and probably more fatal flaw is the fact that he carries around so much guilt and does a lot in the name of reparations.
How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?
Easily, but tbh I feel this is one thing Ven shares with Kato. His morals can be bent depending on who is involved and the consequence of the situation. Ven isn't standing on moral highground in the first place, despite understanding right and wrong well enough. He certainly doesn't care enough about authority not to break rules, and as far as life or death is concerned, a life will always matter less to him if they're at odds with someone he loves. That being said, I think he's resourceful enough to find ways around making risky choices.
What's one way your OC has changed since you first came up with them?
Also a really fun question, cuz I haven't thought about it in years LOL. Though Ven stayed mostly the same from conception, he was supposed to be a bit more "roguish" even after his Reaper years. More of the typical pirate: loose, unkempt and thieving. But he ended up being way more charitable and straightlaced than I'd initially planned, but that ironed itself out almost immediately so I don't really consider it to have been "the plan" just "what I had had in mind at some point" lmao. Now the idea of Ven sleeping around with literally anyone is goddamn baffling to me.
Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?
Every single word of his theme song, "The Balancer's Eye" by Lord Huron, but all of this: Nothing's waiting for us in the great sky Life is equal to dust in the Balancer's eye Now I know that I can't lift an old curse Tell me, how does a man change the universe? Will I ever be forgiven for the crime of my life? Will it haunt me till I die? To the end of time?
If you met your OC, would the two of you get along?
I think Ven is one of the few characters I can genuinely answer "yes" to this question lmao. Just because Ven is hands down the least judgmental of my OCs, not to mention packing all that charisma, he can literally talk to anyone. Although I probably would just be dead on the floor so it wouldn't be a very interesting conversation.
How does your OC behave when enraged?
We so rarely see Ven angry. Honestly, a bit like Kyrie, Ven has a quiet temper. He's good at restraining himself now, because he knows intimately well just how horrible of a person he can be, so he makes a concerted effort never to let anything get him that upset. Mostly, things don't anger him as much as he may be disappointed or saddened. There is one scene in OST:O I've had planned for years that actually showcases Ven's true anger and it is very much "silent and lethal" lmao.
What character alignment would you consider your OC to be?
Oof, I dunno, somewhere between neutral good and chaotic neutral. Hard to pinpoint lol
What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone done? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?
Oh, this one is interesting. I think Ven could have easily continued down the path he started on when he got the sight. That is, had he not been able to pull himself back from that maniacal person he'd become as consequence, he'd be unrecognizable today. That's not to say he isn't already because he absolutely was that person for a moment in time. The Reaper King wasn't just a persona, it was his entire essence. He was ruthless, violent and he did very literally kill dozens (I won't say 100s but it's up there) of people. We like to imagine him as the loving father and perfect husband he is now, but outside of maybe Elsera he's my OC with the highest bodycount. And while in a way you could justify he killed people because "they deserved to die" he was never in the right to pass that judgement. Had he not eventually woken up from that state of trauma and derangement, he'd still be a completely unstable murderous lunatic .-.
What is your favorite thing about your OC?
How hot he is. The end.

Alright second lore dump same warnings as before. So his name is Bishop Purple(Up to other last name suggestions). Also know as Sir or Agent Boss after he faked his death. He/him pronouns. Bisexual with preference towards men. He still likes girls but leans more towards men.
So in a village of Vale a boy was born with eyes of grimm. Eyes that were pure yellow and the boy seemed to be born with Aura weak as it was. The boy would not hide his eyes even when made fun of.
At age five he would meet another friend who he would quickly grow a crush on which seemed to be recupriated. Everyone was sure they would grow up and be Childhood sweethearts. Bishop would learn at age 9 that his semblance let him command the Grimm itself. He would tell his best friend and get so excited he kissed him on the cheek. His parents took photos of him doing it.
The boys would grow up and start training to be huntsman and even start dating. But at age 16 his boyfriend and most trusted person Ozpin started acting strange. He would start talking about a greater mission to help all humanity and how his powers could change the world. The more time past the more he stopped looking at Bishop as a person and more of Ally of war.
Before he left for Beacon Ozpin would break up with him and tried to stay friends. Bishop heart broken would lock himself in his room for days. 2 years would past until Bishop saw Opzin on the news with a statement about his dating life and that he was straight and he knew that he lost the man he loved for good deep in his soul.
He ran away to forset where most figured he died but he actually met a old snow leapord fanuas man who called himself the Keeper. He saw what the man was capable of and wished to train him. He would even let the man have magic to use.
As the they traveled Bishop (hes about 20 to 22 now) would work at many strip clubs to make money to buy things he wanted since his teacher only payed for living cost. He make many friends and have plenty of future connections.
At age 28 he would be told the whole story of what happened and what Ozpin was. At first he blamed Omza, then Salem , but quickly realized the Brothers were to be blamed. The Keeper offered him to be the next Keeper but Bishop said no and left the same day. He sat alone in a taken and decided right their that he would destroy the relics so humanity would never suffer by the brothers hands again and maybe end this war. Theirs more but I think will let that be another ask. Thoughts? Questions? Criticism? Let me know
Previous
I'll start with my biggest gripe with this, just to get it out to the way because the rest of this is very interesting. When you were describing Bishop, it felt like you were putting to much emphasis on his preferences over what he does or where he's from. I feel like coming right out and describing him "he/him pronouns" and "bisexual with male preferences," it felt less like you were telling me about a person and more like you were trying to sell me a product. My personal opinion is that when you introduce a character, you let their actions speak for them, rather than have them or you say it from the start. Have him show us that he's more interested in men, then explain it if somebody asks, like "Oh, is he gay?" "Actually, he's bisexual with male preferences." Or heck, wait until you explain his relationship with Ozpin so that we get the gist of "Oh, he was dating Ozpin before he changed."
Also, speaking of Ozpin, I find it weird that Ozpin would be asked about his preferences, and he just straight up answers with "I like girls". It feels very disconnected to me. Like, Ozpin is being interviewed about his plans for Beacon, somebody asks what he likes, and it just makes me think of either tabloids or a daytime TV show like The View or Dr. Oz.
As for Bishop's semblance and eyes, it feels very weird to me that Ozpin, or rather Ozma, wouldn't try harder to keep him close if his semblance is controlling the Grimm.
I do find Bishop's backstory very tragic, though, in that the only man he ever loved was taken by the spirit of Ozma, and for that he swears revenge on The Brothers, but it kinda... I dunno, feels very light to me. Like, Ozma took Ozpin from him, I agree that he should hate him. Salem creates and controls the Grimm, which I can understand his hatred there. But seeking the relics to destroy them doesn't really make sense to me if he's trying to end the war. Wouldn't destroying the relics only make the situation worse?
I dunno, but I do like where this world you've built is going, especially since you've added a fourth faction from Ozma, Salem, and the Keepers. Might need a little polish, but until then, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

The things I'm reading about the commentary for RW/BY Vol. 9 have made me want to write this post. It's just something I want to say, regardless of how it most likely retreads old ground or shares sentiment with other posts like it. At least it'll be more concise and filled with less angry ramblings than if I decided to write this last night, when I was first reading everything.
(Just to avoid confusion, I'll be referring to the characters/writers via their initials as a way of censoring them from people who don't wish to see this post. This makes it easier for me and is less annoying than having to put slashes everywhere)
I mainly wanted to focus on two things. One was the hacker crew (as I will "affectionately" dub the writers) deciding to off-screen W telling the rest of RBY of what happened to P and J killing her. The other was of ER saying on Twitter that he (and the rest of the hackers) didn't think R would find issue with J killing P. Anything else from the commentary may or may not have a separate post, it just depends on what is said and if it upsets me enough.
Let's address the second point first because I have something to say. I don't understand ER's logic here. Why did he, and by extension everyone else, think R wouldn't be upset/angry at J for killing P? She has every abso-fucking-lute right to feel that way! I mean, one of her closest friends KILLED another of her closest friends! Disregarding how it was P's choice (which I hate, btw), you mean to say R wouldn't lash out at J, berating him for not trying to find another way or doing more to save P? Even if R understood that the situation was complicated or everything was just going a million miles a second, I can't see her not being incensed at him. Shit like that needs time to process and I can't imagine R to be super calm after hearing that bombshell.
Which leads me to the first point. Why in the fuck did the scene of W telling RBY of said bombshell happen off-screen? Why do the hacker crew INSIST on off-screening important scenes like this? Even if fans want to say they didn't want to reiterate information the audience already knows, they could've made it to where W starts the conversation, fade to black or cut away, and come back to RBY's reactions afterwards. It's not that hard! Do they think scenes that are character-oriented are filler? I just can't understand their reasoning for doing this.
It's at this point I'm saying the writers are downright lazy. I've known for years now that they're not good but I know for sure now they're just lazy. ER can Tweet all he wants that he and the team should've been more clear on certain aspects of the story or they should've thought more on other aspects but the truth is, they didn't WANT to put in the work. It's too much effort for them to put in care for decency's sake so they might as well half-ass it or better yet, just shoot the first idea that comes out of their minds, write it into the story without any revising or editing, and call it a day. Let the fans who actually do more for the story than the writers do put in the work to explaining the plot because clearly, they care about the material and aren't thinking they're hot shit for writing nonsensical bullshit.
It must be nice, getting paid to sit on your ass all day while the animators you overwork and exploit the services of do all the work that you underpay them for. Wish I and the other people who create art, fanfics, videos, etc. could get money for all the promo we give you, whether that's our intention or not. But then again, the harassment we may receive for any fuckups on your end wouldn't be worth the blood money.

I have been deeply overthinking the timeline of events for Pkmn Scarlet and I've tentatively settled on the events of the base game taking place across one school year, ending with the gym assessments and academy tournament in May/June; then Teal Mask is a shorter summer study abroad session; Indigo Disk is then during the spring semester of the next school year. I have more in-depth thoughts about how this works, but this post isn't about that. This post is about Scarlett and her team.
By the time I started the gym assessments, my team was in the 72-76 range, which is why I ran bizarre teams of 3 Pokemon for the assessments and the tournament to maintain a challenge. Then that's also why I didn't bring any of my 9 most-used Pokemon to Kitakami.
So, "canonically", I'm not sure if Scarlett does any of those shenanigans for the assessments/tournament. But she does let her main team have a rest when she travels to Kitakami, so that she can catch and train new Pokemon in a new land instead.
Then, by the time I reached the end of Teal Mask, my new team were about the same level as my old team, so I rolled straight into Indigo Disk with a pool of 15 Pokemon in the 70-77 range I could pick from for each battle, and I was at-level because the level curve is continuous from Teal Mask to Indigo Disk.
But that's. yknow. Game mechanics. There's an implied timeskip that I have to work into my narrative. With my timeline, Scarlett knew Kieran and Carmine for about two weeks in July in Kitakami, and then she next sees them in January at Blueberry. Carmine has been traveling doing research with Briar, and Kieran has been obsessively working his way up the BB League Club ladder and making the club an un-fun place to be. And Scarlett... well, if we translate my in-game levels to the narrative, Scarlett hasn't gotten any stronger. She's got 15 Pokemon to juggle caring for, and that's a handful, but given the rate that she and they have progressed in the past, surely in 5 months she'd make some improvement. Enough that Lacey's team of three Pokemon wouldn't curbstomp her in the first battle.
But...she doesn't.
She catches the Loyal Three and that's the last serious challenge she takes on until she goes to Blueberry.
I will allow myself to be haunted by the implications for why that is.
Obvious first answer: she's still incredibly depressed about what happened at Kitakami. She didn't get to say goodbye to Kieran, and while she's hardly the most emotionally intelligent kid out there, she can kinda gather that when Carmine says he's not feeling well before they leave, that's probably like, emotionally not feeling well, not actually sick-sick - unless he made himself sick-sick being so upset. Which really just makes Scarlett feel awful! That's her friend, and she hurt him really, really badly by lying!
And it's kind of hard to miss the way he obviously took each loss worse and worse, and I think that starts eating at Scarlett, too. Like hey, remember in the Academy Tournament when Arven's like "You've got to be kidding me. Up against my little Champion buddy right from the first round?" Scarlett remembers that now too. And there's one conversation with Nemona you have around the academy:
Tumblr media
And I think I had Scarlet respond "Yeah, you can" because I have really come to enjoy a good battle that's down to the wire, one way or another. But now she's second-guessing everything. Do people find it discouraging to see her winning all the time, like this guy feels about Nemona? Are they just being nice about her winning so as not to be a sore loser? Is it arrogant to worry about being too strong and crushing other people's spirits? She gets deep in her own head about it, and I think that really takes a lot of the joy out of battling.
I'm imagining that Naranja hosts another Academy Tournament at the start of the term in September - and Scarlett backs out of it. She already won the first, inaugural tournament. She doesn't need to go ruining the second one for everyone else. Her friends find it concerning that she's withdrawn, Nemona most of all - I think Scarlett still can enjoy battling with Nemona, because she knows that Nemona is cool with losing. But she probably doesn't battle much besides whenever Nemona asks her - which would become more and more frequent as Nemona tries to break her out of the funk she's been in since she came home from Kitakami. And then she trains her Pokemon less, because it's just not as much fun to train alone. She wants to keep her Pokemon healthy and happy, and that means finding opponents for them, but she's burned out hard, and her team would pick up on her mood, and that would probably be discouraging for them, too. Scarlett's spiraling and now her Pokemon are. She's miserable, her friends and family are worried, and Scarlett finally understands just why Nemona was so happy to find her as a friend and rival - it really is lonely at the top.
She gets a little bit of a spark back when she finds out she's been recommended for the exchange program with Blueberry Academy - maybe she can really, properly apologize to Kieran this time, and maybe that can make things right. And maybe since Blueberry Academy is focused mainly on Pokemon battles, and the League is such a bigger cultural thing in Unova, then maybe Scarlett can find some new opponents and have fun again. That's like, a distant second thought - it's probably more Nemona who's thinking about that and gets Scarlett to think about that.
Come January, she's packed off to Blueberry Academy for a semester there - and then she immediately loses the first battle, her six Pokemon barely taking down one of her opponent's three. It's a hell of a shock to her system. She manages to pull it together when Carmine challenges her to a battle, but she's very suddenly realizing that she's got a lot of work to do if she wants to keep her head above water, forget climbing the BB League rankings like Drayton is pushing her to do. She's not really convinced of his big plan, that her beating Kieran yet again is gonna help Kieran at all, but she goes with it because it's not like she has any goal in mind.
So she's got to knuckle down and shake off five months' worth of dust. I think she has a rough time of it, I've talked about that before, so while she beats Crispin and Amarys pretty quickly, it takes some work for her to get up to a level where she feels confident challenging Lacey, and then Drayton. And then she does more training and procrastinates a bit before she sets up her Championship match with Kieran. She's afraid to lose. She's afraid to win. She wins and is still miserable. Kieran is also still miserable, and angry.
I think when they get down to the Area Zero Underdepths, and Kieran catches Terapagos and immediately challenges Scarlett, she tries really hard to talk him out of it. They don't know if Terapagos wants to do this. Scarlett doesn't want to battle him again. Kieran, of course, probably sees this as Scarlett saying that the conclusion is forgone, she's saying of course she'll still win, even against Area Zero's Treasure, even after everything she heard Kieran say, and he gets more and more insistent that they battle. Briar is also insistent because she wants to see what Terapagos can do. Carmine is witnessing a trainwreck before her very eyes.
Also since Scarlett caught the other Koraidon before the group came down here, she's just really freaked out because everything she's been repressing about her prior trip to Area Zero has caught up to her - and Terapagos going berserk really, really doesn't help her! She's down to her second-to-last Pokemon before Kieran steps in to help, and I think she really, really is panicking. She has a bad time. She has a really bad time. Everybody has a really bad time.
And then she goes back to Blueberry and everyone's like "hey, girl who's traumatized and burnt out, can you fix our club and make battling fun for all of us again" and Scarlett's like "I don't know how to make it fun for me again."

the spin and elena problem (#°Д°)
if you've read night speakers you know that spin and elena are implied to have crushes on each other, and if you didn't pick up on that, i IMPLORE you to go back and check!
if you cannot be bothered, here's a small summary of times one (mainly spin) has pined for the other (or someone else mentions it):
spin creates a whole fake scenario with him and elena being goofy on the plane together
spin mentions how the world is ending and the person he's thinking about is elena hickson
tima constantly teasing elena for having a vampire boyfriend
spin noting elena was pretty in night raiders (also him calling her a 'cute girl')
spin feeling regret for the first time when seeing how horrified elena was when he bit matt
spin going to see elena at the end of night walker and her being so overjoyed he was himself again
swing scene. the fact that elena thought that spin was totally crushing on her (he was literally just being attacked by the sun)
i thiiiink callie asks if spin is elena's boyfriend?
there's probably more, meowth would certainly remember most of them, but those are just a few times. we could definitely be reading into it too much, but we definitely aren't. when you piece together all of the evidence it's clear ali really wanted to try get across that spin and elena have some kind of... thing going on.
take how tima and jamie interact in night terrors, for example.
there's maybe 1 mention from jamie's uncle or grandpa about tima being his girlfriend, but other than that, it's all rather friendly. no crushing or nada! i think jamie does call tima pretty, but from the context given it was just an observation. no constant thinking about tima or anything... unlike someone (cough cough spin with elena couogh cough i swear every time he brings up the night speakers he brings up elena cough cough)
anyway, that leads me to what i call the spin and elena problem.
you see, at the beginning of night speakers, elena is said to be in year 8.
for my non-uk friends, that's about 11-12.
now, let me quote page 155 of night speakers, which describes spin for the first time.
"Elena felt her eyes stretch wide. She froze, staring up into the face of a young man."
Tumblr media
WHAT
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOUNG MAN
but then she sees him in better lighting and I GUESS it gets SLIGHTLY BETTER???
"In the better light she could see he wasn't much older than she was - maybe 15 or 16. He could be in Year 11 for all she knew."
okay, like, sure, better than a YOUNG MAN but... no. absolutely NOT.
the mental age gap between 11/12 and 15/16 is too much. sure, 3-5 years isn't bad when you're an ADULT but if there's this thing going on between someone who's NOT EVEN A TEENAGER and SOMEONE NEARING 18 it's just bloody weird don't you think???
night raiders is when the crush thing between elena and spin really picks up as well, and it's only been a few months since the first book. matt's in year 10 now, so that would mean elena's in year 9, but she's still only just turning 13. and then spin is turning either 16 or MY age. NO SANE 17 YEAR OLD WOULD CRUSH ON A 13 YEAR OLD LET ME TELL YOU NOW
sigh
so uhh...
meowth and i fixed it.
we never liked that whole situation with their ages. so we fixed it.
this goes for all of the night speakers actually, because why not!
the solution (^◕.◕^)
yeah we just aged them up and kept spin the same
it felt right to have matt be around the same age as spin, so he's like 16 and then tima's 12 and elena's 15 while spin is 16
it's a small change, but a big enough difference to make it all seem more normal
see i wouldn't age a kid up so it was okay to ship them with someone, know like i wouldn't age tima up all the way from 10 to 16 just to ship her with matt that's weird
but since elena and spin were like 🤏🤏🤏THIS close to being socially acceptable we just headcanon them to be socially acceptable. because they sure do have chemistry. OH they have so much chemistry it HURTS because canon!spin IS AUHUEHUAHFU OLD
so uh... yeah.
all spelena content posted will be bp!spin (beepiss spin) who does NOT crush on 11/12 year old girls
if you don't agree with aging characters up, fair enough, i don't usually either. it was just this one time really, because in the books its never explicitly stated that they like each other but it was still noticeable enough to make it feel... weird.
no ones in this fandom anyway, so my word is basically gospel :,)
on that note, spelena content coming soon! oh, and matt angst. tima will get some love too!

Six of Crows Thoughts
So I finally read Six of Crows and it was a ride. It was probably the first actual physical fictional book I've read in a decade.
I watched the Shadow and Bone show first and knew plot beats and general spoilers/important quotes from the books. And I'm not gonna lie, knowing what was going to happen, but not how it happened made reading the book so much more fun.
Thoughts below.
First of all, holy shit, the crows are so mean to Wylan in the beginning! Even Nina and Inej. That poor boy!
Like, knowing Wylan can't read and that his father tried to have him murdered for it made the rest of the crows' speculation about him running away so petty and unnecessarily mean. But it's not their fault because they don't know. Really glad the book shared the details of what's written in Van Eck's letters to Wylan. The message is so cruel, Wylan's better off know knowing what's in it them. If I hadn't been aware of the spoiler, I wouldn't have even registered all of the little hints Bardugo left. Like the unread letters. Wylan not labeling the map he made and pushing the pen toward Mattias to let him write the ice court names in Fjerdian when Kaz demands to know why it's not labeled. And asking what the book says when they pass it to him before he realizes it's a spyglass. As someone with the mathematical equivalent of dyslexia (math version called dyscalculia), Wylan and his learning disability representation is so important to me.
It was so exciting to hit the big plot beats. There's Inej getting stabbed and Kaz going feral to rip a man's eye out! *fangirls* Waiting for the goddamn tank to appear. Inej's shoes melting as she climbs the incinerator shaft. Nina taking parem.
Every. Wesper. Moment. God, I squealed so hard at the "Just girls?" "No, not just girls," line and had to read the scene out loud to my husband. (Thank you for indulging me, Love.) Their slow burn build up was so satisfying. I get to enjoy their speedrun show version and slowburn book version -- it's the best of both worlds! The shocking part was that the not-just-girls conversation took place while Wylan's hands were bloody from trying to hack away at the chain link. Like, Wylan may be new to crime, but like he goes all in and gives 100% the entire time. Ouch.
Despite knowing so much of the story before reading it, all of the things I didn't know were equally entertaining. Like, I knew Wylan sings a Fjerdian drinking song, but learning the context when and why was so satisfying. (Fuck netflix for not letting Jack Wolfe show off his voice in this scene. Fuck netflix in general.) I also have a new appreciation for Nina and Mattias and their very complicated ... everything. I probably knew the least about them coming into the book and walked away really liking both of them as characters far more than I expected.
Breaking someone out of jail: barely an inconvenience.
Boarding a ship: The most dangerous task of the entire book. lol.
The most unexpected moment in the books was the Crows stumbling across the burning bodies on the pyres. This is a YA novel. I had to remind myself that this gruesome scene straight out of a horror story Is. In. A. YA. Novel. Then Bardugo says, you think that's bad, and makes the entire scene so much darker! Goddamn. One of the bodies is still barely alive, suffering, and Jesper puts it out of it's misery like it's a horse with a broken leg. All Kaz can do is snap at Jesper for giving away their location with a gunshot. Jesus christ.
Speaking of ... Kaz is waaaaaaaaaay more violent in the books. Holy shit. The show neutered him. Little Kaz swearing at Jakob Hertzoon. Him climbing out of the harbor at 9 years old and robbing a kid in front of a candy store, taking the boys pants just to humiliate him. Cutting another kid's feet up just so that he can steal the boy's job. Brutal. Every time I came across those scenes, I summarized them for my husband (who is a saint for watching the Crows scenes of the show with me and listening to me talk about this series non-stop) because my hubby thought Kaz came off as the most useless member of of Crows because for someone said to be so violent, Kaz Brekker never actually did very many violent things. Hubby pointed out the Inej, Jesper, and even Wylan have a higher body count in the show than Kaz.) SO I felt obligated to prove just how insane and deranged Kaz was in the book.
Nina is a queen for taking parem and saving all of them. What a sacrifice.
I'm so proud of Inej for stealing Heleen's diamonds. Take back your autonomy!
I also really appreciated the irony of the entire Ice Court being Grisha made. Like, my druskelle dudes, you hate Grisha but you depend so heavily on them. You can't have it both ways.
Jesper's horror of the kefta lined tophy wall and his internal struggle after killing the tidemaker gave him so much more depth. He denies his powers pretty hard, but he acknowledges that it could have been him captured, strung out on drugs, or murdered. Part of him died after killing the tidemaker that was actively attacking him and Wylan ... it's so heavy. He knows that he should have volunteered to take the parem with Nina or in her place, but was too scared to do it. I love Jesper so much.
I knew there was going to be a body switch, but didn't realize it happened in Six of Crows. I thought it would just be in Crooked Kingdom. Van Eck's betrayal was ... woof. Sad that Kaz and Wylan's conversation about being a useless hostage/Wylan's disability/and the body swap plan was summarized in Kaz's narration and not shown. I have a mighty need to read that entire scene, dialog and all! Give. It. To. Me!
Kaz probably threatened the shit out of Wylan to not tell Jesper about the body swap onboard the ship. (That's book Kaz's usual style of persuasion.) But Wylan as Kuwei standing near Jesper on deck each evening is the most romantic, sweet gesture I've read in years. God, the pining. And it's just treated as a throw-away line! Excuse me, I'mma need some fanfic about this. Meanwhile, Jesper's like, why is this new weirdo following me? lol.
Jesper thought Wylan (and others) were on the ship as it blew up. And Kaz wanted him to think that. Goddamn. The book just straight up says that Kaz let Jesper think Wylan had died to punish him. Again, Kaz is insane. This cannot be understated. He really earned that title of Dirtyhands.
Random, but I also really enjoyed all of the names, whether characters or locations. The naming was a point and easy to pronounce, (aside from Kuwei, which I double checked the pronunciation but that's probably just me being overly cautious.) Fantasy names can be kinda tricky, either sounding too modern or using obscure letters to be an incomprehensible mess of x, q, and z. So well done with minor phonetic changes and lots of double letters.
I'm so excited to read Crooked Kingdom now.

MRR: Where'd you come up with those little details like "all I wanted was a Pepsi?"
MIKE: Actually, I got it from this little kid named Howie, who's 12 years old. He used to hang out with us. He lives up here now. One time he goes "Mike, did you ever look at the wall and just look at pictures and you figure out everything and it makes so much sense?" It's like some people that do drugs, acid or whatever; I don't do that stuff. But they'll look at a light and they'll go "Wow, everything makes so much sense!" It was just funny he was saying "man, I told my mom to give me a Coke, and she wouldn't give me one. Wow, I don't know why. Why?" I just put that in there cuz I thought it was amusing. It all relates to having problems with parents and when they can't deal with you they say "I'll have you stuck in an institution." I know about 10 or 15 of my friends have been, and it's all a situation where their parents just are tired with dealing with them. They're not saying "okay, this is the way you are and let's try to figure it out." They say "it's too much of a bother, we'll just stick him in an institution." It's saying just because you can't/don't understand they way a person is doesn't mean they're crazy. They probably can't understand the way you are. It's just a cop-out: stick him in an institution.
