Denethor leaps grotesquely into the air to catch the tomatoes and shove them into his mouth with both hands. Eomer only affirms your statement to get people to stop throwing tomatoes at Denethor.
"boromir taught eomer how to speak the common tongue" I say. I am booed off the stage. the crowd throws tomatoes. suddenly from somewhere in the audience, someone says, "he's right." it's eomer son of eomund, speaking in the same dialect and tone as boromir of gondor

𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐧
✧ Overall, Aragorn still thinks it’s a good idea not to tell anyone about his feelings for you - but that doesn’t stop him from getting irritated when others try to flirt with you.
✧ Especially when his older brother decides to flirt with you.
✧ Realistically, Aragorn knows the two of you are joking around - but the idea of you two smiling over something he cannot do (or at least does not come as naturally to him) is unnerving.
✧ Aragorn tries not to hover over you when this happens and instead focuses on something more productive, like trying to teach the hobbits how to spar.
✧ It isn’t until you and Elrohir come to the training ground, clearly looking to train together, that he finally does something about his jealousy.
✧ “Brother! I have sparred with the hobbits for so long I worry they are growing used to me, would you care to make sure they are prepared against more enemies than just the Dúnedain.”
✧ By the smile that suddenly shows on Elrohir’s face, his sibling can see through him, but the son of Elrond doesn’t complain as he goes to the hobbits. Instead he steps aside to allow you and Aragorn to spar.
✧ It’s only after the spar that Elrohir makes a comment. “Jealous of me, Estel? That really isn’t very noble of you.”
✧ (It’s also probably not noble when Aragorn kicks him in the shin after, although it is satisfying).
𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬
✧ Realistically, Legolas knows that you don’t have any interest in Boromir. You’ve been around him long enough that the two of you would already have formed a romantic bond, and the two of you haven’t.
✧ But you also share bonds that he hasn’t got. The two of you are both from Gondor, and there’s a light in your eyes when you talk about your home that he will never fully get. And the two of you are both human.
✧ It never gets too bad, mostly manifesting in anxious looks between the two of you from far away and when no-one is watching.
✧ The only time it ever gets bad is when you and Boromir are both on the archery course together, attempting to outscore each other.
✧ Because that’s the thing that you two do together.
✧ He watches for a while, and eventually his feet take him to the archery course subconsciously. Announcing his presence by shooting an arrow from behind into your target, hitting a perfect bullseye.
✧ It’s petty, but he still lights up when you turn around and greet him - almost as if it’s just the two of you there.
✧ (Until you invite him to join yourself and Boromir.)
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐨
✧ Frodo isn’t a very jealous person naturally, and it’s this lack of jealousy is only reinforced when he’s one of the only people you talk to in the Shire.
✧ As you visit more often you eventually interact more with other hobbits, even if it’s just a dipped head or a few words, but everyone knows you're just here for the Baggins' family.
✧ (Although Frodo is very happy when you immediately bond with Sam, and that Pippin and Merry can make you laugh easily.)
✧ The only issue arises when a fellow ranger greets you, showing up on one of your walks together and immediately trying to hijack the conversation.
✧ It’s a little intimidating, more because of the height than anything else, and Frodo is reduced to stewing in the corner of the Green Dragon as you two catch up.
✧ When you step away to get a new drink, it’s just Frodo and the ranger there as he tries to channel Bilbo’s inner pettiness.
✧ “I’m very sorry, but I fear I’ve forgotten your name. Hobbits meet so many people, you see, and I don’t think (y/n)’s ever mentioned you.”
✧ You come back before anything else is said, and this time Frodo launches into conversation with you. He feels a little bad about the incident afterwards, but not enough to try and apologise.
𝐒𝐚𝐦
✧ Sam also isn’t a very jealous person, at least not when it comes to the people that he’s close with and them being around you.
✧ He’s glad when you can smile and laugh with his friends or with yours, because it shows you have people who care about you - and that’s what he really wants for you. People who care (like him).
✧ What he takes issue with is flirting and messing around from strangers who neither of you know.
✧ Because they don’t have your best interests at heart.
✧ They’re looking at you and only seeing looks, they’re not seeing the smile you make when you see the first flowers bloom or Sam’s found a recipe for just the right amount of sweetness and you’re tasting it for the first time. They don’t actually like you.
✧ He’s still generally confined to glaring from across the room, but every now and then - when someone gets too rowdy - he’ll come over to you and place his arm around your shoulders.
✧ It’s more a show of protection to support you than it is being jealous, but a small part of his heart is happy when they stop trying to get with you because of him.
✧ Always apologises for it and asks if you’re ok after.
𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲
✧ Everyone in the Shire could tell that something was going on between the two of you - everyone.
✧ (In fact, it had been a lot of people’s rumour of choice yesterday. Which Pippin certainly made sure he heard about.)
✧ Which made it even more egregious when someone had started flirting with you the second Merry had gone to get you drinks.
✧ In about twenty seconds, someone had managed to weasel their way to your side and was very badly attempting to flirt with you.
✧ The second you saw Merry re-appear, you had looked from him to the random guy in an obvious ask for reinforcements.
✧ Coming over with a smile, Merry puts on his biggest grin and holds up the drink for you before taking a look at the person next to you.
✧ “I’m sorry, are you the one who’s been guiding them around all day and is paying for their drink?”
✧ He leaves it at that, although he could go on, and is quite satisfied to see them immediately go back to the corner of the bar.
✧ You thank him for helping you, and he only feels a little guilty about the selfish reasons he’s done it.
𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧
✧ Doesn’t get jealous about the Fellowship being around you. You’re all going on a quest to save Middle Earth together and it would be childish of him to be upset about you hanging out with the people you’re going to be travelling with for months.
✧ However, he does get a bit jealous when some of the elves of Rivendell speak to you, such as one of the tall dark haired ones whisking you away to discuss something.
✧ Not that he does anything or complains - because they’re all slightly terrifying. He just waits, patiently, then insists it was no bother to wait before cursing hobbit-politeness that doesn’t allow him to complain about his hosts.
✧ Merry notices his stewing, it’s very obvious when Pippin is just standing outside a doorway and impatiently tapping his foot.
✧ Pippin only actually stands up for himself once. The dark-haired approaches you two, twice in the same day, and this time he puts himself in front of you.
✧ “Actually, we were about to train together…. If you don’t mind of course, only this is a prior engagement and-”
✧ He ends up going on a bit of a tangent, unseeing of the fond smile on your face as you watch him, before he finishes awkwardly.
✧ Erestor lets you two go in peace, and the two of you quickly head out to train - you pretending not to notice Pippin’s blush.
𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫
✧ As custom with the rangers first day back in Minas Tirith, the taverns are soon filled with soldier’s of the White Tower - swordsmen and bowmen alike.
✧ You and him both end up in the same one, along with recruits from both sides. It’s tradition for the captain to cover the first round, and Boromir has deep enough pockets to fund it, so he gladly puts the coin down and takes drinks out himself.
✧ Looking around, he tries to spot you as a second ranger suddenly comes out with two drinks, one for you and one for him.
✧ It’s a small gesture, but one that he wanted to make for you. A gesture that he wanted to make you smile with, not for a random soldier to brighten your day.
✧ Taking the drink you smile before seeing Boromir, raising your glass to him and mouthing he can’t quite make out.
✧ He gives the drinks away as quickly as possible, going up to you - his heart skipping a beat as you immediately move up for him, gesturing to a spot by your side.
✧ The gesture instantly warms his heart, almost enough for him to forget about the perceived slight, and the warm atmosphere that soon takes over everything is more than enough to keep the rest of the negativity at bay.
✧ (Him being close to you for the rest of the night certainly helps, too.)
𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐫
✧ In all honesty, there’s such a small period between you knowing each other and you starting to court that there really isn’t that much for him to be jealous over.
✧ Except when he learns of your potential betrothal to his brother.
✧ It’s never been a tradition his fond of, Gondor’s hopefuls giving away their children to the stewards, but it’s something he’s endured. Faramir knows his brother will never find someone this way.
✧ Until you are a candidate. Because who would not choose you, if they had a chance for your hand?
✧ He certainly would, and he expects Boromir too as well. He watches as, for another time in his life, he is forced to be on the sidelines even as his new love is a few feet from him.
✧ When Boromir greets you, it takes Faramir biting down on the inside of his cheek - only enough to distract - so that his disappointment and jealousy will not show.
✧ Faramir now envies little for his brother, but when your heart is involved it becomes fiercer than ever.
✧ (The insecurity of him being almost convinced that people will always choose Boromir over him does not help with these emotions either.)
𝐄𝐨𝐰𝐲𝐧
✧ As the dawn has finally risen on Helm’s Deep, and the noises of war no longer echo in the gorge, Éowyn is finally allowed to leave the cave and search for her loved ones. She is delighted to see all her loved ones alive, and Éomer’s return, and it is even better when the Golden Hall is decorated for celebration.
✧ When you all return from Isengard she is the first to greet you, and you gladly keep to her company once you dismount.
✧ It is not you leaving her that makes her jealous, but rather the large amount of Rohirrim who suddenly seem interested in one of the heroes of Helm’s Deep.
✧ She supposes a potential future ruler of Gondor must have good diplomacy, but she wishes you wouldn’t extend it to practically everyone in this hall who’s only looking for a quick flirt.
✧ Eventually, as yet another person fills the gap she takes their place, offering you a drink from the Cup of Kings. You take it, drinking a sip before meeting her eyes and whispering for her to not go and to protect you from yet another person.
✧ Éowyn gladly agrees, intervening when other people try to speak as soon as you glance her way, and the rest of the night is spent with you.
✧ (Also supports whatever decision you make when Éomer asks if you’ll join the drinking game. Either a loyal defender of your right not to drink, or the best support-woman you ask for.)
𝐄𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫
✧ Even when pining for you, when in some ways it hurts him to be near you - reminding him of his love - he still goes to your training sessions, cheering just as loudly.
✧ He can more easily recognise the way his heart flutters in joy when you look for him in the corner of the room, and how quickly he smiles when all you do is acknowledge him.
✧ And then one day, he can feel your eyes on him, the smile you get when you notice him, before your eyes slip away and search for someone else.
✧ Éomer knows he should expect this, that there are other people you care for, but it’s like being plunged into cold water.
✧ Following your line of sight, he sees when your eyes light up again and immediately tries to determine who’s making you smile like that.
✧ It’s his sister, of course.
✧ The worry leaves him immediately, replaced by embarrassment. Even more so when Éowyn notices him staring before looking between you and him, a knowing smile on her face.
𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐝
✧ He understands it’s your job to be decently polite to people, when they aren’t actively breaking the law, so doesn’t mind when you're nice and friendly with people. In fact, he quite likes it and it helps reassure him you’re the right person for him.
✧ However, he’s been on one to many night shifts where some of the residents have gotten too drunk.
✧ Knows you can handle it, but doesn’t think that you should have to handle it.
✧ Tries to let you deal with them but is certainly hovering there ominously in the background, ready to be backup should you need any backup.
✧ However, as he can see a man try to approach you during the festival, Bard decides he’s finally had enough for tonight. Tonight was supposed to be the two of you.
✧ As he gets closer, Bard simply puts a hand on his shoulder - firm enough to stop him in his tracks.
✧ He can feel the man tense up but just speaks quietly to him, a tone of forced politeness.
✧ “I assure you, they're busy.”
✧ You turn in time to see the man take hasty steps backward while Bard looks a little too pleased to be innocent, but when you tilt your head in question he just grins.
✧ Deciding to run with the string of luck, you don’t chase him further; you simply accept what’s happened and spend practically the rest of the night with him.
𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐢𝐥
✧ Thranduil does not see it as jealousy, because jealousy implies that he is unstable. Jealousy implies he has a genuine belief that you would be interested in any of the elves that give a passing smile to you.
✧ If he had to pick a word, he would choose protective. In actuality it’s closer to ‘possessive’ but you aren’t his - not yet at least - and therefore he has nothing to possess.
✧ He does, however, have plenty to protect.
✧ Making sure never to abuse his powers, he understands that you make your own choices, he will occasionally keep an eye on things.
✧ It’s only ever subtle shifts, like the overly flirty elf you were complaining about in your talks being transferred from his doors and into a regular guard patrol. He sees your slightly lighter step, and hears no words of complaints from you.
✧ Is fine with you having relationships (such as friendships) that you’d appear to be closer to - simply because they are your friend and he is your king. Until he can truly bridge that gap, there will always be some level of formality between you two.
✧ (That doesn’t stop him from wishing you could be that comfortable around him, however. The fact he wishes for the friendly touch or wider grin you give to others.)
𝐓𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥
✧ Becoming part of the royal guard is, for the most part, exactly what Tauriel had dreamed of for both herself and for you.
✧ There are a few things she would change, of course, like the two of you being able to spend more time together - but these are minor things.
✧ Then there’s the minor thing of Caraitur, an elf that you patrol with. Tauriel knows that he doesn’t actually mean anything with his flirting, but he still annoys her. The way he tries to hold the door open for you, or smiles at you.
✧ Doesn’t confront him but is actively petty. If she’s on any duty regarding taking care of helmets or weapons his are always not quite shiny. Perfectly functional, but something looks off about them.
✧ Always enjoys being very affectionate with you afterwards, hugs and lots of smiles. (Sitting right next to you while sending a smirk at him.)
✧ ✧ She’s careful to make sure none of what she does can be traced back to her, but that doesn’t mean she can’t still reap her reward.
✧ You’ll ask her why she’s smiling and she comes up with either the most nonsensical answers you’ve ever heard or just say ‘you’.
𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫
✧ Lindir had always been very grateful for his elven qualities, and never considered the fact he was an elf to be anything less than a gift.
✧ Except for certain aspects when it comes to you. There are the more unpleasant aspects, of course, but also simpler ones that in some ways annoy him more.
✧ Like the fact he will never be able to bond with you over certain things that are small to some people (like the crunching of snow effortlessly beneath your feet), and deeper meanings.
✧ To him, you seem to light up more when around the race of men. Like how you are doing with Aragorn, the king’s heir, back to briefly visit Imladris.
✧ He’s not naturally a confrontational person, so prefers to try and ignore his envy while stealing glances from the two of you from afar. Trying to convince himself he isn’t seeing you laughing with so much mirth, or smiling so widely.
✧ Eventually, he can’t take it any more. Spying the two of you in the gardens, Lindir also moves to go there - running into the two of you with a deep bow.
✧ Careful not to stutter with his words, or allow his blush to show, he asks if he may walk with you soon as the two of you have been more distant lately.
✧ His heart is lifted almost immeasurably when he asks you to walk with him now, leaving the human behind to be with him. And seeing you smile and laugh with him, it alleviates his worries very well indeed.
𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐫
✧ To be entirely honest, there isn’t anyone he truly feels jealous of - at any point in time when you aren’t courting.
✧ He understands that you are travelling with the Fellowship because of your duty to protect Middle Earth, and he’s glad you get along well with your companions.
✧ When the two of you are out on patrol he gets to know you more as you speak of them to him, and tell him about your thoughts.
✧ That you speak fondly of the hobbits, but in a familial way - as though they were younger siblings, or at the least ones to be protected (and not romantically interested in).
✧ Although you are more tolerant of the dwarf than he may have liked, Haldir recognises the annoyed-but-affectionate tone you employ about him to be one of friendship.
✧ He fears not for either of the men, as one is in love with an elf already and one is in love with his city.
✧ Haldir is still protective of you, trying to spend as much time with you as he can while you are in his realm, but he is assured enough to never be jealous of anyone - only the time you spend with them.
✧ Even that he can understand, and he combats these feelings by simply asking you to join him on patrol.
𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐧
✧ Elladan knows he should not be jealous of his own brother, especially when his own brother is doing this very deliberately to make him jealous.
✧ But, now that Elladan has finally come to a realisation about his feelings, he knows that he wants to be the one with his arms around you.
✧ He knows that he wants to be the one to make you smile. He knows that he wants to be the one who makes you laugh. He knows that he wants to be the one for you.
✧ And he certainly does not need his brother to give him a ‘helpful nudge’, thank you very much.
✧ Elrohir gets slightly closer to you, and Elladan finally comes out of his hiding place and coughs to announce his presence.
✧ Trying not to smile too obviously when you brighten, he pretends to be entirely innocent before asking if he can join the two of you.
✧ You agree quickly, and Elrohir feigns annoyance before suddenly remembering something important to leave the two of you alone.
✧ As Elrohir leaves Elladan can see him mouth ‘good luck’ before winking.
✧ Unfortunately, you don’t see that part. You just see Elladan mouthing ‘bastard’ back. It still makes you laugh.
𝐄𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐫
✧ Of all the elven figures, Elrohir is by far the most jealous. And also the most irrational with his jealousy.
✧ For him, it isn’t about who or even what you’re spending your time with, just that it’s so much more than him. And that he wants you to look at him with love in your eyes, of any kind.
✧ As you pour over more paperwork regarding Gondor for the fifth hour that night, he lets out a despairing groan that matches the look in your eyes.
✧ “Oh come on darling, will Gondor truly collapse if you take a little break? I’m going to break if you keep ignoring me.”
✧ Looking up, you give him a small smile before going back to… Gondor’s agricultural imports regarding fruits of Rohan.
✧ With a grin, he makes sure to be gentle before whisking the paperwork away from you. “We can make someone else do it. Faramir would be happy to help his twin out, or we can bully my brother-”
✧ You make a swipe for the paperwork, but he can tell your heart isn’t in it which only increases his grin. Pulling you up, he instantly begins to get you out of the door and into your city.
✧ He reasons it might be nice to see what your city looks like again after only seeing it in official documents, but both of you know it’s simply a poor excuse to spend time with you.
A/N : Hope you enjoyed! Next update is the confessions, so we're finally getting completely romantic. Also, if the writing is different then it's because this was written at 8am, 2pm, and 9pm respectively... so. Also - I now have a taglist! (feel free to fill out the form if you want to be tagged)

This kind of Denethor discourse is so frustrating to me that I am literally pacing back and forth like a panther in a zoo enclosure. Ugggggggghhhhh
A lot of people will tell you that the moral of The Lord of the Rings is “never lose hope,” and that Denethor is bad because he loses hope.
Please read THIS and THIS and especially THIS, which is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking meditations on LotR you’ll ever read. Tolkien’s ideas about hope are so much more radical than “hope good despair bad.”
Denethor—Tolkien’s Denethor, not Peter Jackson’s Denethor—is unsettling because he tries to hope, but his hope isn’t strong enough to save him. Here are his thoughts on hope, just a few days before his death:
The time will not be long. In what is left, let all who fight the Enemy in their fashion be at one, and keep hope while they may, and after hope still the hardihood to die free.
Denethor has a more “realist” worldview than Gandalf or Faramir, but he’s not a nihilist. He’s still hanging onto hope even though he’s grieving Boromir and he’s positive that Frodo is going to be captured by Sauron. He only breaks when Faramir is mortally wounded and he sees the black ships in the palantir. And I don’t mean he gives up, I mean his mind snaps:
And as [Pippin] watched, it seemed to him that Denethor grew old before his eyes, as if something had snapped in his proud will, and his stern mind was overthrown.
Tolkien repeatedly uses language like “madness,” “madman,” “he is not himself” and “his mind was overthrown.” It’s not subtle!
Denethor is having a psychotic episode. His culpability is reduced, either partially or totally; we can’t know for certain. But I don’t think that everything he says and does in his last moments is “the real Denethor.”
We can do our best and try to have hope, but sometimes life crushes us. How are we supposed to live with the knowledge that this can happen?
Tolkien was haunted by the idea of heroes who fail, heroes who are crushed by their burdens:
Frodo indeed 'failed' as a hero, as conceived by simple minds: he did not endure to the end; he gave in, ratted. (Letter 246)
….I think it can be observed in history and experience that some individuals seem to be placed in 'sacrificial' positions: situations or tasks that for perfection of solution demand powers beyond their utmost limits, even beyond all possible limits for an incarnate creature in a physical world – in which a body may be destroyed, or so maimed that it affects the mind and will. Judgement upon any such case should then depend on the motives and disposition with which he started out, and should weigh his actions against the utmost possibility of his powers, all along the road to whatever proved the breaking-point. (Letter 246)
Tolkien himself tended to judge Denethor harshly, but the character fits very well into the same template as Frodo: a “sacrificial” person who is pushed beyond his limits. The palantir aged him and weakened his mental health, but what truly pushed him over the edge was the wounding of Faramir: Tolkien says that Denethor “maintained the integrity of his personality until the final blow of the (apparently) mortal wound of his only surviving son.”
It’s easy to judge Denethor for using the palantir (although Tolkien said that he had the right to use it and Gandalf admitted that the palantir’s knowledge had often proved useful!) but what should Denethor have done differently regarding sending Faramir into battle? We know that the defense of Osgiliath was necessary because Tolkien had the Rohirrim arrive at the exact moment the Witch King is about to ride through the gate of Minas Tirith. If Faramir hadn’t delayed Mordor’s army, the Rohirrim would have showed up to a conquered city.
Denethor believed that it was necessary to send Faramir to Osgiliath… and he was right! But the pain of being responsible for Faramir’s death was too great for him to bear. You can say that his craving for information killed him, but it’s just as accurate to say that his love for Faramir killed him.
Gandalf tells Denethor’s servants that they were “caught in a net of warring duties,” and this is also true of Denethor. His duty as a father conflicts with his duty as the leader of Gondor, and the strain destroys him.
It may be true that Denethor’s need for control is a character flaw, but I wonder about his final use of the palantir. His son appears to be dying: why does he leave his side to go look in the palantir? I actually think this was a hopeful act: Denethor was hoping to see the Rohirrim, or some kind of good news about the war, some indication that Faramir’s death would not be in vain. But the palantir shows him that he sent his son to die for nothing.
It’s the tragedy of Denethor lamenting “I sent my son forth, unthanked, unblessed, out into needless peril” and dying before he can learn that the battle wasn’t needless… you can’t reduce this tragedy to a morality play!
Okay, I can’t deny that the palantir is a very topical analogy for the internet/smartphones/the tyranny of “data” in general.
But Denethor is so much more than a blackpilled internet doomer, and I will defend him forever.

How the Fellowship Act Around Their Crush (GN!Reader)
Hello friends! Kicking off my blog with some cute headcanons for my favorite people- hope you enjoy 😄
Tumblr media
Aragorn
✧ One of the least obvious for sure 😅 we love a strong silent type but unfortunately that means you’ll have to be reading in on his actions
✧ Checks in on you a lot, just making sure you’re feeling alright and not hiding any burdens because he wants to carry those.
✧ Teaches you all he knows about the world’s botany when he notices your curiosity, pointing out what plants are poisonous, which the elves use for healing, and which can be made into tea. Snags a few to make you said tea at the earliest convenience 😌
✧ Will be the one to drape his cloak over you if you get cold. Not the type to stop others from doing it, but boy will he be the fastest by far!
✧ Has the habit of letting his fingers linger over yours just a bit longer than necessary when he hands things off to you or presses small items into your hands.
✧ Is the best with his words. He’ll reassure you if you feel insecure that you have a strength and beauty you bring to this world that no one else does, that the time you are in does not define you as a whole, that all have roles to play here.
Legolas
✧ Least obvious part 2! Another who is more silent about things…at least at first! If you understand Elvish, you may catch him searching for advice from Aragorn on if he should speak of it or not.
✧ Almost always defers to your word/opinion whether it’s where to stop or simply how you’d like to spend the rest of the evening.
✧ Shows off just a smidge 🤏🏻 when he knows you’re looking, like no, he doesn’t have to impale three orcs with the same arrow three different ways but did you think it was cool? Then yes he did. Still his face colors with surprised, joy, and amusement when you react with awe.
✧ “Wow, beautiful,” you breathe as your eyes scan the stars, glittering constellations and distant galaxies winking above you. “Indeed,” Legolas responds softly, but if you happen to peer at him from the peripheries of your vision at just the right time you’ll see the glance he surreptitiously slides to you.
✧ Holds open every door for you, slides back every chair, serves you at every meal, like this prince is peak gentleman and nothing less!
✧ Whispers joking observations about the rest of the fellowship, especially Gimli, that he usually keeps to himself into your ear as you sit together during mealtimes. This creates a whole slew of inside jokes between you two and much confusion over what you could possibly be laughing at.
Boromir
✧ Not over-the-top, but he figures what’s the point if you never figure anything out? Definitely wants to drop hints for you 😌
✧ Places a kiss to the back of your hand when he first meets you, telling you it is truly an honor.
✧ “Here, allow me,” he’ll say as he gently takes whatever burden you bear whether it’s bundles of firewood or even your bag on a particular rough day of travel.
✧ Happily shares tales of Gondor’s splendor with you and insists he’ll take you there and show you himself someday. Asks in turn for stories of your home and all your favorite things about it. Even if he can never visit, Boromir is determined to find a way to bring a piece of your home to you someday- anything to make you feel like you’re there again.
✧ Offers you his arm when you two walk side-by-side, guiding you with a firm, warm grip that keeps you feeling secure.
✧ Always places himself between you and danger, stepping in front of you with his sword and shield in hands and even shifting you back with a hand upon your waist.
Gimli
✧ You’re going to figure it out pretty quickly. He’e comically vocal as we all know, but also incredibly smooth when he wants to be…and boy does he want to be 👀
✧ Drops a lot of hints about how dwarves are the warmest, heartiest lovers and best providing partners! “We’ve the grandest of halls and sturdiest of bodies, after all!”
✧ Literally always has your back, like he is more aware of any threats to you than you are. It’s nearly impossible to count how many times he’s slashed an orc you hadn’t even seen off your back, giving you a triumphant nod and an “Anytime, Lassie/Laddie!”
✧ Laughs at every single joke you tell so hard you can’t help but puff up in pride at your sense of humor, nudging your shoulder with his.
✧ “Oh, stay still, you’ve got something in your hair” Proceeds to remove it in the most tender and intimate manner you’ve ever experienced.
✧ Asks you to look him in the eyes before a big fight because, in his words, if that’s the last thing he looks upon before going out it’ll all be worth it.
Frodo
✧ Has no idea what he is doing honestly. Has never felt this way before and wasn’t sure if he ever would, so his demeanor around you suddenly becomes shy, almost withdrawn.
✧ Your self-appointed nurse. Tends your wounds silently but with the most caring, gentle touch and gaze fluttering back and forth between your wound and your expression with those big blue eyes.
✧ Goes on walks every now and again when everybody’s camped. After a while of seeing you watch him off, Frodo plucks up the courage to invite you to join him on one.
✧ Embarrassed as he is at first, he is encouraged by your eager eyes when you ask what he’s reading, shyly admitting it’s some poetry he loves. Ends up reciting you the whole thing, looking into your eyes intently as he wishes to actually be confessing each of those flowery words.
✧ Grabs your hand to lead you places whenever he finds something you just have to see! Blushes about it after the fact but in the moment the excitement just takes over him and he doesn’t even think about it.
✧ Begins sharing concerns and deeper thoughts with you once he trusts you as a sort of sign of that feeling. He hopes you understand that he doesn’t disclose to just anyone.
Sam
✧ He wants to talk to you so bad, but also you’re the most gorgeous person he’s ever seen and how does he do that??? So sweet and attentive with his gaze when you do talk, so that could clue you in.
✧ He definitely gives you the biggest and best of anything he prepares, smiling softly at you as he dishes it up!
✧ Offers to tell you stories of The Shire, especially if you’ve never visited it yourself, and you can see the love for it in his eyes as much as you can hear it in his voice. Shares a few about his old Gaffer, too!
✧ Trips over his words from time to time. He’ll accidentally say the wrong thing and nervously try to laugh it off not realizing how adorable he looks when he blushes ☺️
✧ Sees a pretty flower on the road and immediately thinks of you, plucking it up and twirling it thoughtfully before extending it your way gently, naming his discovery as he does so.
✧ Would give you the shirt off his back if you wanted or needed. Offers you things from his bags a lot ranging from supplies that can ease your passage on this trip to the last of the sweets from The Shire he’d thrown in his pack pockets. Any task you don’t want to do Sam is jumping up to do for you!
Merry
✧ Medium obvious because he makes it his mission to get close to you and hype you up. If you’re oblivious or cynical it could be mistaken as him just being friendly, but it can’t come as a shock the way he’s so eager for your presence!
✧ Acts like you being amazing at things you’ve never even done is a foregone conclusion, like it could be your first time firing with a bow and he’ll be telling everyone what a natural you’ll be, urging you to go on and show them!
✧ Faintly embodies the old adage ‘if they tease you, that means they like you’. He sometimes makes up stories to see if you believe him, chuckling merrily when you do but quickly giving up the ghost again so you don’t have the wrong idea. Others he’ll just poke fun at things you say and egg all of your jokes on, too!
✧ Winks at you on the off time you two make eye contact with each other.
✧ Holds out his hand to you and gives a small bow every time he invites you to dance, asking if he may have it with a devilishly charming grin before he pulls you close.
✧ Whisks you away when he wants you to himself, taking you on a sightseeing adventure or even just foraging. Turns it into an over-the-top skit of him searching and protecting you from the threats of the forest that has you giggling!
Pippin
✧ Oh, you’ll be able to tell! He tries his best to be smooth and is super complimentary and generally wants to be around you 25/8. Even if it comes across goofy, you have to give him props for being forward with his intentions 😌
✧ Practically jumps out of his seat to be the one to help you with anything, whether it’s going fishing, gathering berries or firewood, getting some training in…you name it, he wants to be there for you if you need him!
✧ You may catch him staring at you, whether it’s in awe of your beauty or just straight-up checking you out depends on his mood, but his eyes are almost always flicking back to you in idleness.
✧ Remembers every single detail you share about yourself, like EVERY SINGLE ONE. Knows all your preferences by heart and frequently suggests playing your favorite game or offering to sing your favorite song, likely with an invitation to dance too! Pippin will chime in about your dislikes or allergies before even you can.
✧ Casually begins breaking touch barriers with small gestures like putting a hand on your shoulder during a mock apology for his cousin’s behavior or sitting with your arms brushing. If you don’t seem to mind, he’ll get bolder, slinging an arm over your shoulders during a jolly moment!
✧ Not afraid of compliments, definitely not! Unabashedly (well, mostly anyway, he hides a blush well) tells you that color looks great on you or what a pretty face you’ve got just in casual conversation.

the fellowship grocery shopping (modern au!):
frodo: has a list which he always loses halfway through shopping. tries to bring his own bags but they’re never enough, or he forgets them in the car and realizes mid checkout. does not like a lot of the name brand foods, goes for the knock offs- partly because he thinks they taste better and partly because he’s rooting for the underdog. (also they’re cheaper which means more money go towards buying treats for the neighborhood cats.) makes an exception for name brand strawberry poptarts, a pippin favorite. keeps his fridge stocked with snacks for his friends.
sam: grows a lot of his own produce and makes an effort to shop local. has his own chickens and a thriving herb garden. he often trades with neighbors-tomatoes for honey, basil for goats milk, etc. once a month he teams up with boromir and goes to costco for insane amounts of flour (he bakes his own bread) and a foot long hotdog. sam refuses to get his own membership.
merry: has a list of things to get that he has worked very hard to compile. this list stays on fridge, and whenever he runs out of something he adds it. this is always sabotaged by pippin who, in a port attempt to mimic merry’s handwriting, adds a copious amount of sweets and things only pippin likes. ends up buying them anyways only to not share with him- will gloat by snacking in front of pippin and not offering any to his cousin.
pippin: does not actually grocery shop. yes, he has food in his house but this is more because he just tags along whenever someone else is going. selectively copies whatever they get into his own basket. has eight jars of peanut butter because he loves peanut butter but does not consume it at the rate he believes he does. also for backup, incase he runs out mid sandwich and needs eight jars of the stuff. loves to ride in the shopping carts when no one’s watching. definitely scooters along isles. loves to hijack boromir’s shopping trips as boromir is the only one who will push him in the cart and give him a lil treat at the end.
gandalf: kind of just. wanders around the store. gets lost in the bakery. buys the most random things, causing the clerks to conspire about what he’s doing with two packs of rubber gloves, a rosterseie chicken, and a tub of mayonnaise. is he a murderer? a professor? a single mother? what is he doing with this stuff?
aragorn: does a lot of trading with neighbors, like sam. likes to accompany arwen on errands and do the little things. she points at an item and he puts it in the basket. he bags at checkout. drives her home. unloads the car and put it away. real quality time and acts of service. yes, arwen is capable of doing these things herself, but he likes to do it for her: hunts so be always has a surplus of jerky, does need to buy more salt then the typical person.
boromir: also hunts. has a thing about using every part of the animal, will eat bone marrow straight out of the femur with a spoon for breakfast. eats a lot of protein. is real big about no food waste and will use everything he can. has his own compost bin and a humble herb garden. likes hosting barbecues for everyone, and makes the burgers and hotdogs from scratch. every other tuesday is grocery day. he goes to costco and buys his things in bulk. he’s the only one in the fellowship with a costco card and everyone loves to take advantage of it.
legolas: mainly just happens upon farmers markets and grabs what appeals to him in the moment. does not have any seasonings or cooking oil as it’s not something that’s ever really occurred to him to buy. will forget he has food in his fridge for weeks and when he finally does it’s gone bad. this, however, does not stop him from eating it. makes a lot of smoothies.
gimli: has a lot of preserved foods and a cupboard dedicated to emergencies. owns a lot of canned beans, fruits and vegetables- anything that will keep well. has a freezer filled with food in his garage with backup stock. is a very good with coupons- pippin likes going with him just to see the total (and the clerks jaw) drop. eats a lot of trail mix and jerky. enjoys fresh fruit when he can but doesn’t like to buy it because it doesn’t last.
gollum: sneaky little man. he hides in the bottom part of the carts meant for heavy items and parties his way across the store with his hands, scooting along tile and grabbing anything with reach, tossing it back up to the cart and continuing on his journey. then he just rolls right out the door. no one can stop him.

Hi! For a request could you do The Fellowship as parents? Like reader has a kid with them what would they be like? Have a great day!
Cute! This has just been sitting in my drafts
The fellowship as parents
Aragorn:
-This might be controversial
-Because ik we know Aragorn is daddy (hehe)
-But
-He’s not the best father of those on this list
-He’s a great dad don’t get me wrong
-He’s very patient and guiding
-But he’s also not the uttermost hands on
-He wasn’t raised like that
-He kind of lets his kids figure stuff out on their own while supporting them and making sure they don’t die
-Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all; just compared to the others I’d rank him lower
Legolas:
-I have a hard time picturing him as a dad; more like a cool uncle
-But he would be the dad that’s kinda on the same level as the kids
-I think elves are kind of feral growing up so his parenting reflects that
-Yes they are elegant and poised; he is a prince so his kids need to know manners
-But he will join them in eating things they shouldn’t
-Climbing places probably not good for a child to be
-I don’t get the vibes that he particularly dreams of being a father; but he would take on the job to the best of his ability should it happen
Gimli:
-Father of the year right here
-I just think dwarves are generally good parents and if we consider his father; well let’s just say he’s got a good relationship
-Won’t stop talking about his children
-Will go to all the tea parties and talk to the plushies
-Yes he is wearing a tiara; obviously
-A goofy dad; no problem embarrassing his children for his own entertainment and to keep their egos in check
Boromir:
-A very good father
-He doesn’t take after his father; and instead treats his kids kinda how he treats Faramir
-Literally the most love and pride
-Please give this man a daughter
-He would spoil the shit out of his little princess
-He would also be sooo excited to be an uncle
Frodo:
-Another one I can’t picture as a father; but he would take a kid under his wing
-Let’s kids tag along with him for anything
-Talks to them the same way he would anyone; which makes the kids think he is the coolest
-Like he doesn’t coddle anyone and is very honest (with maybe a bit of cheek)
-He kind of co-parents with all his friends
Sam:
-Another top tier dad right here
-It’s always been his dream to have kids (a lot of kids)
-I’ve been living for the bunny comics made by @rutobuka2 and Sam literally embodies a bunny in the sense of family size
(I’m a definitely more a LOTR person than Hobbit but damn it if this isn’t some of the cutest art I’ve ever seen)
-Anyway; I’ll stop fangirling and get back to the hc’s
-He is super gentle with his kids; but also is very good about discipline
-Definitely teaches his kids to take care of their mom
Merry:
-Super involved with everything
-Gets his kids whatever they want but they do have to work for it; more like rewards and gifts
-Loves to build things for his kids; like a treehouse or wooden boats
-Takes his kids on rides and fishing trips
-Makes sure they know basic life skills
Pippin:
-He’s a fantastic dad
-I feel very repetitive in saying that but it’s true; the fellowship of good dads
-So engaged with his kids
-Will go above and beyond in their games
-Takes dress up very seriously
-I imagine him also being very scheduled with bed time
-He probably riles his kids up before bed with silly bedtime games (which is what my dad did)
-Seems counter productive but it made me excited to go to bed so I never really fought it; genius
Gandalf:
-Grandpa energy
-But chaotic
-We know he is good with kids; or at least that kids love him
-Can keep anyone entertained
-You can trust him to babysit
-This is in moderation though
-He will grow tired and want a break so he will dump them on someone else for a bit

Currently reading Lord of the Rings for the first time. Never seen the movies (I want to read the book first) and the majority of my LOTR knowledge comes through memes and spoilers on Tumblr analysis posts. I've made it through Fellowship of the Ring and am now in The Two Towers, specifically the chapter where Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard.
Thoughts and predictions at this point (contains spoilers, but it's been out since 1954, so deal with it):
-So I guess "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard" was Merry and Pippin? In which case, they did not end up taking the hobbits to Isengard. Pity.
-(No but really, I had thought that referred to Frodo and Sam because I think they're slaves at some point? IDK. Maybe they're slaves in Mordor. I shall have to wait and see.)
-I am happy that Merry and Pippin have had more page time and got to have a clever escape. I was beginning to wonder why they were there in the story. I do like them, though.
-I wonder if Treebeard is important?
-During the entire second half of Fellowship of the Ring, I was thinking, "Surely Legolas has a bigger role, based upon the number of fangirls?" I now see that he does have more page time, though still at this point, I feel his fangirls may have overinflated his role within the story. Perhaps he shall do more later, though. Still a cool dude, in any case, sleeping while walking and all that.
-Gandalf's defeat was less dramatic than I'd always imagined. Pretty sure he's not gone forever, based mostly upon memes and fanart. And also the fact that he seems to be rather too important to be gone this soon.
-I'd honestly anticipated a long redemption arc for Boromir. Based upon all the analysis I've seen about him, I had vaguely known he sacrificed himself for the hobbits, but didn't expect it to be this soon. Not sure how I feel about this. (I did cry, and then I cried again when Aragorn didn't reveal what he'd been up to to Legolas and Gimli. I didn't actually expect to cry while reading LOTR. But the tragedy hit hard.)
-I know there's gonna be a romance between an elf-lady and a man, but I'm not sure who with whom. I don't think there's been a single hint of that yet. Maybe I'm wrong.
-Pretty sure they're going to see the ocean?
-"I am no man!" (Or something along those lines. I hope that wasn't movie-original; I think I've seen pictures of that text in the books? But it sounds very epic.)
-Gollum is a persistent chap. I rather like him. I do, unfortunately, know his fate. My sisters watched the movies when they were little and that's one of the only things they can remember.
-It's definitely picked up compared to the first book! Unlike many people, though, I did read through all those pages of pure worldbuilding lore at the beginning. It was boring and yet delightful.
-I need a map. I'm borrowing a friend's version where there's all the books in one cover with lots of illustrations and such. There was a map of the Shire but not of everything. I could easily look it up online, but I'm stubborn and want to see if the book will have one at some point.
-Can't wait for Aragorn to come back as king. I assume this shall happen in Return of the King. It would make sense. He seems a good fit for the job.
-I would DEVOUR an anime of this series. Specifically, a book-accurate one.
-Sam is excellent.
-Lots of fantasy seems so much less original after reading LOTR :P

I love being a wild card in this fandom.
What I love about Sauron/Mairon x Galadriel is that their dynamic isn’t some basic Light vs. Dark nonsense. Because this is Tolkien, not some Hollywood digested cr*p, as the professor says himself:
Some reviewers have called the whole thing simple-minded, just a plain fight between Good and Evil, with all the good just good, and the bad just bad. Pardonable, perhaps (though at least Boromir has been overlooked) in people in a hurry, and with only a fragment to read, and, of course, without the earlier written but unpublished Elvish histories. But the Elves are not wholly good or in the right. Not so much because they had flirted with Sauron; as because with or without his assistance they were 'embalmers'. They wanted to have their cake and eat it: to live in the mortal historical Middle-earth because they had become fond of it (and perhaps because they there had the advantages of a superior caste), and so tried to stop its change and history, stop its growth, keep it as a pleasaunce, even largely a desert, where they could be 'artists' – and they were overburdened with sadness and nostalgic regret. Tolkien, Letter 154
This is what I've been telling you guys. The Elves are not hopeless victims of Sauron, nor are they the "heroes" of the story. Tolkien lore is complex, it's not "pure Good vs. pure Evil" like the "lorebros" or the Peter Jackson fanboys claim. Stop believing their nonsense, they don't know what they are talking about. The battle of “good vs. evil”, in Tolkien legendarium, ultimately, happens within each character.
When they first met, Mairon and Galadriel both turned their backs on literal heaven (Valinor) because of their pride: Galadriel wanted the glory of seeking and destroying Sauron for herself; Mairon couldn’t bring himself to face judgement from the Valar. Mairon was the repentant sinner, while Galadriel was on her way to become one.
Tumblr media
Galadriel is a literal ticking bomb, ready to explode and turn Dark at any moment, in "Rings of Power". Mairon was drawn to the darkness within her, and not to her “light” (this is another way he self-deceives himself). Her “light” (= Two Trees of Valinor) is merely aesthetic. She doesn’t have that light, and that’s why she’ll use Nenya, and her Mirror and her Phial to harvest purest Light, and become the “Lady of Light”.
In “Rings of Power” there is a clue that Mairon might be blood bound to Morgoth, and, so, he’s always unconsciously seeking his former master, and that’s why he wanted to serve Galadriel. Because he's a Maia, he was created to be a servant to a Vala. The deal, wasn't her becoming his servant, but the other way around.
Tumblr media
And we are talking about Sauron, here: his whole character arc is not one of redemption, so he the interest he believes he has on "Light" is not real, it's one of his self-deceptions. And for Sauron to never stop grouping Galadriel’s mind, thousands of years into the future, when he’s already officially the “shadow of Morgoth” it’s because he recognizes her potential for darkness, not her light.
This doesn’t mean that he’s unredeemable, mind you. Tolkien’s work is infused with Christian doctrine (mainly Catholicism), and in this religion one can always find redemption and forgiveness if one actually repents for their sins, and makes amends for them (which will be Galadriel's case). And this is also present in Tolkien lore: no character is unredeemable on his world. But in the legendarium, after refusing to stand trial before the Valar, Sauron never truly repents, and becomes the "a reincarnation of Evil" aka Morgoth come again.
And there is Sauron. In the Silmarillion and Tales of the First Age Sauron was a being of Valinor perverted to the service of the Enemy and becoming his chief captain and servant. He repents in fear when the First Enemy is utterly defeated, but in the end does not do as was commanded, return to the judgement of the gods. He lingers in Middle-earth [Halbrand]. Very slowly, beginning with fair motives: the reorganising and rehabilitation of the ruin of Middle-earth, neglected by the gods', he becomes a reincarnation of Evil, and a thing lusting for Complete Power – and so consumed ever more fiercely with hate (especially of gods and Elves). All through the twilight of the Second Age the Shadow is growing in the East of Middle-earth, spreading its sway more and more over Men – who multiply as the Elves begin to fade. Tolkien Letter 131
Tumblr media
Sauron was of course not 'evil' in origin. He was a 'spirit' corrupted by the Prime Dark Lord (the Prime sub-creative Rebel) Morgoth. He was given an opportunity of repentance, when Morgoth was overcome, but could not face the humiliation of recantation, and suing for pardon; and so his temporary turn to good and 'benevolence' ended in a greater relapse, until he became the main representative of Evil of later ages. But at the beginning of the Second Age he was still beautiful to look at, or could still assume a beautiful visible shape – and was not indeed wholly evil, not unless all 'reformers' who want to hurry up with 'reconstruction' and 'reorganization' are wholly evil, even before pride and the lust to exert their will eat them up. The particular branch of the High-Elves concerned, the Noldor or Loremasters, were always on the side of 'science and technology', as we should call it: they wanted to have the knowledge that Sauron genuinely had, and those of Eregion refused the warnings of Gil-galad and Elrond. Tolkien Letter 153
Tumblr media
Halbrand was repentant Mairon. Annatar is Mairon falling back into evil.
Galadriel is not yet the “repentant sinner” Tolkien described her to be, in his legendarium, either. In Season 2, she doesn’t own up to her actions, and is still making excuses for them: “I was deceived”; “Sauron used me”; “Under his harp I was played to a melody not of my choosing”, bla bla bla.
Tumblr media
She’s still in self-denial about her actions in Season 1: she’s the one who tempted Mairon with promises of power and, pretty much directly, caused him to choose deception over redemption, and condemned Middle-earth to Sauron’s tyranny (this is also somewhat compatible to what Tolkien wrote, because in the lore the Elves are also to blame).
And I’m almost certain she’ll have to f*ck up even harder in order to have a “eye opening” moment. Because one can’t really be a “penitent” (using Tolkien’s words) unless one takes ownership of one's actions, and makes the conscious decision to atone for them.

Are there any Tolkien ships you like ? ( trop included)
Of course! God I need to get more cringe. I'm a fandom blog I swear, I don't just talk inscrutible metanarrative. The ships I love!
Boromir/Theodred; All the real ones on this blog will know my commitment to this ship even if I don't talk about it a lot anymore. What if self sacrifice was all that your life and personality and circumstances would allow you, what if that defined you in such totality that the idea of wanting and needing was a kind of agony. What if that wasn't true for just one person, because in their own unique way they are also sitting here with you in this war, in these positions you have no choice but to fill, what if they both understand and need you to understand too, what if you both collectively decided that whatever meagre loving you could nurture between you was enough, what if in the end you died hundreds of miles away but also barely a morning apart. I cannot express to you how much I think about them.
Tar-Telperien/Ciryatur; This is my entirely made up lesbian ship where Ciryatur is concieved of as an edging-transmasc lesbian who changed their name to their job title. I had plans to write a fic about them but my health has really curtailed a lot of my fanfic aspirations. The basic point is Telperien being butch herself and the pair of them building joy from rigid circumstances and around the fluctuating and tenuous religious/political issues of the era. I painted a little thing for them here ages ago. But I'm still pleased with it :)
Denethor/Finduilas; The title of my blog is not a joke. There is something so compelling about viewing their relationship through the lense of them both being of trans-experience but eternally closetted. Finding a way to still live a life that is beautiful and meaningful to them even when it is forged of so many griefs and injustices and dangers and horrors.
Denethor/Aragorn; Mostly as a 'nothing happened but they're insane about each other' thing. Denethor wanted to be Aragorn's Steward, he wanted to give him a home, he wanted to let him belong somewhere and Aragorn wanted that too but pride and culture and circumstance meant that it never came to anything and Aragorn abandons Denethor in the end.
Denethor/Gandalf; Again nothing is happening here but emotionally they have skipped the romantic relationship and landed on divorced couple of 40 years. You know me better than anyone alive and yet refuse to understand me, which is a pain so familiar as to be comforting. Yet sometimes I still find myself reaching out for intimacy anyway and hating that I am surprised you hurt me in response.
Measse/Thuringwethil; This is obscure as to be almost uninvolved in the world of tolkien as a whole but in earlier drafts of the Valar there used to be a goddess called Measse who was sort of a goddess of war but more a goddess of viscera, she had bloody arms and was called amazonian. And I think Thuringwethil should have been her Maia, I think she should have invented vampires. And I think they should have kissed about it.
In terms of TROP I think Elendil and Gil-Galad should fuck but in the most shameful catholic repressed way, I want them both to sully their divine aspects by bouncing and moaning on it. I think they should crumble under the pressure of their stations and angst about how corrupt their souls must be to desire such unnatural couplings but like, Elendil is still sucking Gil-Galad's tongue the next day. The inevitability of queer desire will always triumph over Eru-mandated asceticism and purity.
You have no idea how upset I am that Pharazon didn't get a chance to nearly convince Elendil to become a kingsman and to hate god. Like it literally writes itself, two widows of nearly equal social standing, struggling to maintain relationships with their adult children but like mostly it's their fault.. they could have had the most self indulgent intimate 'yes exactly!' talks in the dead of night by the sea... And then they could have kissed about it too. And then Elendil could have eventually been like NAY! My love for the One is TOO GREAT, I will not forsake the valar!! Wasted potential.
I am also grieving the brief frisson we got with Miriel and Galadriel, I was getting very invested in these two women who are both in their own way going to fail in the most catastrophic manner possible and the sexual tension between them that evoked.
Disa/me.

Good day! Can I request some headcanons for Boromir and Haldir (is it okay to request them?) falling asleep on their fem!s/o’s lap, please? Thank you!
Hi! Is it okay for you to request the love of my life and one of my favorite elves? Of course it is! Thank you! I never get to write for these two.
Falling asleep on your lap:
Boromir:
Okay, so in order for this to happen, Boromir needs to be exhausted. Like can’t even stand up exhausted.
He’s just come home from a long day of training with Faramir and helping Aragorn run Gondor and he can barely keep his eyes open.
You’re sitting on your shared bed, reading a book when he stumbles into the room and you can see how exhausted he is. And when he doesn’t kick his boots off before laying down, you know he’s had a long day.
So you close your book and shuffle towards Boromir’s form with a gentle smile on your face. He watches you as you sit next to his head and ask how his day was.
The only answer you receive is a long sigh and you chuckle at the dramatics as you gently lift his head and place it in your lap.
Boromir is staring up at you now, his eyes half closed as he leans into the warmth of your body.
You bring your fingertip up and slowly stroke the bridge of his nose, smiling when he sighs and closes his eyes. You hum quietly as his breathing starts to even out.
It doesn’t take long for quiet snores to fill the room and you pull your hand away, staring down at your love and his peaceful expression. You place a gentle kiss on his forehead before reaching for your book again.
Haldir:
It’s a quiet day and you’re sat by the lake, your back against a tree and Haldir laying next to you, his head in your lap.
You’re singing quietly, harmonizing with the nightingales as you run your fingers through Haldir’s hair.
He’s looking up at you, letting your voice wash over him and getting lost in the feeling of your nails scratching his scalp with each stroke through his hair.
As you continue your ministrations, it becomes harder and harder for Haldir to keep his eyes open. He’s trying though because he doesn’t want to miss a single second of your song.
It’s not long before he loses the fight and his eyes slip shut. His head feels heavier in your lap, but you continue your movements and only lower your voice slightly.
Your song comes to an end and you look down at Haldir, smiling at the calmness of him. You run your fingers through his hair one more time, gripping the locks gently and twisting them together.

The next generation of chaos
A/N: Here are a few headcanons about the sons of two of my favorite chaotic menaces. This quite literally kept me up. I went to bed thinking about these fools, and I woke up still thinking about them - an hour before my alarm. Yes, I am salty about that bit of it. As such, it's not edited the best, and it's far from my best writing. However, it is up because I want it out of my WIPs folder, and I need to cry with other people about how much I love these characters.
Credit to @emilybeemartin. Their artwork inspired these deranged ramblings. Please check out the original post. I am not kidding when I say that the first time I pondered this I was scrolling, stumbled on her artwork, my jaw dropped, and I ran to my laptop to jam out a few notes. I am still in awe of this art. Go give her all the love.
With all that said, here are some headcanons about Faramir Took and Elboron. Guest appearances of their fathers along with Aragorn and Eldarion:
Faramir Took would love to learn like his father and namesake alike. We know Pippin later assembled the Tale of Years, and Faramir aided in continuing the tradition as he grew up and took over as Thain. As was noted in the original post, Faramir would also be the spiciest lionhearted hobbit - just like his father. There would be no foe too big for him. He would train with the Rangers of Ithilien and the Knights of Gondor to hone his swordsmanship at every opportunity. Pippin would train with him back in The Shire. Watching his son learn to fight would remind Pippin of learning from Boromir in Eriador. One night after training, Pippin would sit Faramir down and tell him all about his namesake’s brother and how Boromir saved his life. Faramir would have heard this story many times before, but he would listen to it all again in rapt attention.
Elbooron grows up to be slightly more reserved than Faramir (the younger), but he gained a bit more mischief than his father - for which Pippin is absolutely responsible. He never causes any lasting damage or harms anyone, unlike Faramir the younger who may or may not have accidentally blown up a shed with a firework, but he plays small pranks when he gets the chance. Well, no lasting damage unless you count the premature gray hairs he puts on Faramir’s head. Faramir (the younger) loves to join in on the fun whenever he is around, and he makes everything ten times worse, in the best way. Nothing is safe in the kitchen, no fireworks can be left unsupervised. The problem is Faramir Took knows far too much about how to be sneaky to be caught by a few guards. After all, he had to learn to best his dad, who stole the palantir from Gandalf. Pippin takes great pride in how sneaky his son is, and Diamond has to remind him to be serious when son is in trouble for his latest mischief.
As the two boys grow, Elboron eagerly shares all his latest findings and pieces of knowledge with his dear friend from the time they are children - whether in person or in letters. When he is very young, he will beg Éowyn or Faramir - whoever happens to be closest - to write letters for him about the new flower he found or the new game he played. He works twice as hard to learn to his letters to be able to write Faramir on his own, so he never has to wait for his parents again.
Faramir looks forward to these exchanges more than almost anything even when it’s the most mundane of facts or theories that hold little interest for him. Elboron’s excitement is infectious. (I am simply ignoring the fact that it would take at minimum 3ish months to travel from The Shire to Ithilien, which would make it a six month process to get a response to a letter; time and distance mean nothing)
As adults, both Elboron and Faramir would be treasured advisors to the other - Elboron leaning on Faramir when unsure if a situation calls for military action and needing reassurance that it is the correct decision as well as leaning on his friend to be his more impulsive and hot headed half in general, and Faramir leaning upon Elboron to temper his more fiery nature.
The two fathers love nothing more than watching their boys play together and learn from each other when they're young.. They sit together and reminisce on their younger and wilder days. Some days one of them will get a far off look in their eyes and wonder aloud what Boromir’s children would be like. The other would sigh and say “would that he could share in these moments with us.” “He lives in us, and then in them, my friend,” the other would answer. For a long while they would both fall silent and gaze out towards the Falls of Rauros and Amon Hen. [expanded below]
Aragorn and Eldarion make a point to watch over all the children of Faramir and Pippin as they age, promising them both to keep them out of trouble and keep them safe when their fathers pass, serving as a godfather and older brother respectively. The assurances bring a degree of peace that neither knows they need, but what surprises them most is that the promise to look after their friend’s son is almost more reassuring than the promise to look after their own. Both know their own son will manage, but they fear for their friend’s son losing them, for they know they have become a confidant and comfort to them over the years.
The task is a challenge, but they mostly succeed. Faramir takes to calling Aragorn 'Strider’ even when not appropriate, just as Pippin did. Thankfully for all, where Pippin became more of a menace as he aged, just was smarter about it, Faramir seemed to learn at least a little bit from his namesake about mellowing...and got smarter about his mischief like his father did. He never did stop calling Aragorn 'Strider.' Elboron, while as quiet natured and scholarly as his father, also inherited his father's keen perception and ability to read people. With it, he inherited Faramir’s propensity for mischief and teasing (we saw Faramir in Ithilien with Frodo and Sam, he likes to mess with people; the man is a bit of a menace) that would only exponentiated by his close relationship with Pippin and Faramir. Rarely does it get Elboron in trouble, but every once in a while it lands him in a tight spot when he's a little too on the nose with his teasing or calls out the wrong noble for ill intent with no concrete proof other than vibes. Eventually, he does master both causing mischief and being politically savvy with the help of his gift. It gives Aragorn a few gray hairs, Faramir the younger loves it, Eldarion loves watching his father fall victim to a new generation of chaos and remembers fondly his days spent with Pippin and Faramir the older.
I am impossible and simply cannot let a good chance for some angst and feels to go, so here. Let me annihilate your emotions as I did my own! (aka I made myself sad, so now you all have to be sad with me)
What can never be
Faramir and Pippin sat on a bench along the edge of the Garden of the Fountain. So rare were the days they could spend like this, especially in the White City. There were times, however, they both reported back to Minas Tirith. Over the years, those trips had become precious gifts, and occasions for their families to visit, as much as they were political events.
The sun had begun to set on this day, and on this visit. Elboron and Faramir played in the grass, some game involving chasing each other and periodically freezing, of which only children could fully comprehend the intricacies. At one break in the action their fathers had asked and became rapidly baffled, but they were giggling with such glee that it warmed both Pippin’s and Faramir’s hearts too much to fret the details.
While the sun continues its descent, they reminisced on the old days, their younger and wilder days. They keep their voices hushed for fear of encouraging their children to engage in exactly the same mischief they themselves did. Pippin snickered. “Did I ever tell you of the time that Merry and I stole one of Gandalf’s fireworks? Surely I have.”
“Many times, Pippin,” Faramir assured him, “But tell me again. I was just thinking of how much I miss Mithrandir and his wisdom.”
“Well, I cannot say this was one of his wisest moments. It certainly was not Merry’s or mine, but…” and with that he plunged into the familiar tale. Faramir grinned. He wondered how many times Boromir heard exactly this story. Well, not exactly. Pippin never told the same tale more than once. They always shifted and grew in their retellings based on what effect the hobbit wanted to have. This one felt as though it might be close to the truth. It was a quiet retelling, private, meant to hold onto the memory of a dearly missed friend at a time when things were simplest for the Pippin.
Faramir wasn’t sure when Pippin fell silent, or when his own gaze had gone distant, but he blinked twice and came back to himself. He found Pippin looking much the same as he was sure he had moments before. Neither of their eyes were trained on their sons, who played on utterly unaware of their fathers’ distraction. Instead, both of them stared out at a spot that was far from visible, but they could both see it with perfect clarity. When Pippin spoke it was barely audible and his focus never came back to the moment. “What would his kids be like, do you think?”
Faramir had no need for Pippin to say of whom he spoke. It was not the first time, nor would it be the last, they had this conversation. Faramir sighed, a deep and pained sigh. “We will never know with any certainty, my friend, but he lives on in us, and then in them.”
Silence hung between them until Pippin uttered what they both were thinking. “Would that he could share in these moments with us.”
They fell silent once again. It was an easy silence. One of shared pain, which gave comfort to them both. The sun had nearly fallen past the horizon, and both sons sat in their own quiet conversation. Their fathers gazed out towards the Falls of Rauros, Amon Hen, and beyond to Parth Galen lost in memories and wondering about what could never be.

hi hi hi!!!
maybe “a man could hold the weight of worlds, but he could never carry the love i have for you.” + figayda??? 👀
or “you can’t scare me like that” + any lotr pairing you think fits??
i want to come back to the figayda but my brain LEAPT at the second prompt so... poking my head out of the ground like what would you say if i said boromir and aragorn should kiss a little bit? under the cut because in typical me fashion i cannot shut up
For a long time - too long - Aragorn knows nothing but fear and desperation and the slick feeling of Boromir's blood coating his hands. It's only the faintest flutter of Boromir's heartbeat, soft beneath Aragorn's shaking fingertips, that keeps him from completely giving into despair. Only his heartbeat, however weak it is, that gives Aragorn enough strength to choke out an urgent plea for athelas, Legolas, please, whatever you can find-
Legolas has never once let him down in all the decades they've known each other, and now is no different. He returns moments later with the weed in his hands and swiftly gets to work making the poultice, Aragorn and Gimli staunching the blood flow around the arrows with their hands the best they can.
Finally, after too many too long minutes, Legolas falls to his knees next to Boromir's body and gives the poultice to Aragorn, pressing his hands to the wound instead. "It's ready. We'll start with the wound closest to his heart, then move to the stomach, then the shoulder."
Aragorn nods, and gives Legolas the order to pull his hands from Boromir's chest. They work quickly, in unspoken unison. Gimli snaps and removes the arrow, Aragorn smears the poultice over Boromir's wound, and Legolas bandages it with whatever he can find before they move on to the next. Aragorn has to tear his shirt for the final wound on Boromir's shoulder, ripping away what little clean fabric remains, but it doesn't matter.
If it's the difference between Boromir living and dying, it doesn't matter.
Once they're sure the worst of the blood flow has been stemmed by the poultice, Legolas and Gimli slip away to wash the blood off their hands and clothes. Aragorn, though, doesn't dare move. Not so long as Boromir's heartbeat is too weak, not so long as his breathing is too shallow, not so long as his face is too pale, not so long as his life hangs in the balance.
Even once they return and the sun has long since set, all he can do is sit there with his knees digging into the forest floor, his hand gripping Boromir's tight, and his eyes fixed on his face.
"Aragorn," Legolas says behind him eventually. "You should rest. I will watch over him."
"I cannot leave him. I will not."
He doesn't tear his eyes away from Boromir's face - he thinks perhaps color is returning to it, but it could just be a trick of the fire - even as Legolas sits next to him. "I didn't realize you cared for him so."
Aragorn laughs through his nose, short and humorless. He hadn't either. Not until he saw the arrows buried in Boromir's broad chest, not until he pressed a kiss to Boromir's strong brow, not until he thought about entering Gondor without Boromir at his side and realized he couldn't even fathom it.
He didn't know when it happened. Didn't know when the aching in his heart had begun to be soothed only by Boromir's presence. All he knew was that he needed him. He needed the Steward - his Steward - with his sword and his strength and his good heart, no matter how the ring tried to change that. He couldn't bear taking the crown if Boromir was not there by his side, friend and companion and partner all at once.
"I didn't either," he finally answers Legolas. "But I do, and I can't leave him until I know he will live."
"I understand," Legolas says, a small smile in his voice. "I'll keep watch, then."
And then he slips away into the darkness, no doubt leaping up into the trees so that he may see even further, and leaves Aragorn to maintain his vigil.
He leans his head down, resting his forehead over Boromir's heart - still too faint, but getting stronger - and whispers, "Come back to me. Please, meleth nin, do not leave me."
He goes quiet, then, and watches Boromir's face through the night.
And finally, when the sun has just begun to rise, he watches Boromir's eyes flutter open as he takes a shuddering breath. Aragorn's heart leaps.
"Boromir," he whispers, leaning over so he may see him. "Don't move too much, your wounds are deep."
"My king," he says. His voice is weak, but his lips curl into a smile. "I did not expect to see your face again. It is a welcome sight indeed."
"Yes, well. I couldn't let you swear yourself to me and then abandon me," Aragorn says, unable to stop himself from smiling in return. "And I do not wish to walk through the gates of Minas Tirith if you are not beside me." The smile slips from his face and he grips Boromir's hand even tighter. "You cannot scare me like that, Boromir. I... If Legolas had not found athelas for me, I don't know what I would've done."
"You would have gone to Gondor and claimed your throne," Boromir responds with surprising conviction. "You are not so weak as to be torn apart by the loss of one man."
"Perhaps you think too highly of me, me-" He stops himself. "My friend. Your loss... I would have lost myself, too."
"I do not believe you," Boromir insists, "but I am glad we don't have to find out who is right. I am here. You saved me."
"Yes," Aragorn says, and cannot stop his free hand from drifting up to cup Boromir's handsome face. "Yes, you are here."
Boromir turns his head carefully to press a hesitant kiss to Aragorn's palm, though his eyes never leave Aragorn's. "My king. My captain... My beloved."
Aragorn's heart cleaves in two.
This time, when he leans down to kiss Boromir, it is to kiss his lips.

𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐧
✧ Aragorn believes in elvish love, so from the moment he confesses he knows that he loves you.
✧ He sees how much he does in everything, from the few dates you can steal in Rivendell, to the smiles you exchange while walking with the Fellowship.
✧ But he’s not sure when to say it, as he knows just how much of a milestone it is. And how much he wants it to mean to you.
✧ Keeps trying to get it in a specific place, a specific time. But every time he just enjoys your company, and never ends up saying it.
✧ You notice his love, however. So obvious in how he’ll stare at you, offer to help with something or simply spend time with you.
✧ Eventually, it happens only a few days before the Fellowship is to leave Rivendell.
✧ The two of you are stargazing together, and he just about hears a yawn you fail to stifle.
✧ Laughing, he moves closer to you and wraps you in his cloak - the two of you cuddling together.
✧ As you rest your head on his chest, and he looks up at the stars, he thinks about how perfect this is.
✧ Gently, he bends his head to be near yours before whispering. “I love you.”
✧ Feeling you look up, he simply smiles when your gaze becomes more questioning.
✧ When you say ‘I love you too’ you can immediately see his grin, and he gently places a kiss on your forehead.
𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬
✧ When an elf confesses, the idea that they love you - utterly and completely - is an undertone that’s carried with it. It’s Legolas’ unspoken promise to you, as soon as he’d asked if you would court him.
✧ But actually saying it to you is another matter.
✧ He’s not scared, he’s just… a little scared. And a little intimidated. Because he doesn’t want to mess anything up, and he wants what he will give you to be perfect.
✧ So Legolas actually takes a long time to say those words, although you know how he feels about you for a while.
✧ Legolas also confesses just before you leave Rivendell, although his is more planned out.
✧ He spends almost two days beforehand looking over all of Rivendell, in sunlight and moonlight, trying to figure out what place is perfect for you.
✧ What place is worthy of you.
✧ Eventually, he decides on a shaded pavilion surrounded by trees, one that reminds him of Mirkwood. Except here flowers grow all around, and he can focus on being romantic with you.
✧ When he invites you to join him you suspect something, although the sight of your prince surrounded by flowers is still breathtaking.
✧ Waiting until you join him, he tries to hide his nervousness by rubbing his finger over the flowers he’s holding for you.
✧ And then you’re right in front of him.
✧ “I love you.”
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐨
✧ Frodo first says he loves you when he confesses to you.
✧ (“(Y/n). I know we’ve been friends for a long time now, and I’m very grateful for that. But - I don’t just want to be your friend. I want to be more to you, I want you to be able to love me like I love you.”)
✧ But that doesn’t make his feelings any less genuine, his love for you any less sincere.
✧ When he says those words to you he means it just as much as anyone else, he’s just slightly more in tune with his emotions.
✧ Because he knows you well enough that, as much as he wants to make a grand romantic gesture out of these words, he simply wants to tell them to you more.
✧ (Besides, the sooner he says it for the first time the sooner he can say it again.)
𝐒𝐚𝐦
✧ He’s embarrassed about how he’s going to say it. Not because of you, of course - he knows he loves you wholeheartedly - but because he doesn’t want to mess anything up.
✧ So, to make sure he can properly confess to you, he practises.
✧ What he says changes slightly each time, there are too many good qualities to pick. And although some staples remain it often changes to encompass what the two of you had done together, like how beautifully you look when you smile, or how grateful he is that you’ll help him.
✧ When Sam finally has the perfect time to say what he wants, he realises he’s slightly at a loss for words.
✧ You can tell he wants to say something to you, the way his throat hitches and then he relaxes. Taking a deep breath.
✧ Noticing your eyes on him, Samwise decides that now is the time to speak.
✧ “I- I love you. More than I’ve ever done with anything, more than I do with the Shire, or the flowers out in the garden. Because, you’re the person who truly makes me happy. You’re the person who I can truly be myself with, you’re the person whose smile lights up my heart. The person who knows how to make me feel better, the one I can trust.”
✧ “And, for that. I really do love you.”
𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲
✧ Although he’s overt with his affections, Merry doesn’t immediately say these words to you. He wants to earn them. To prove to you that he is a good boyfriend, and then he’ll be fully worthy of your love.
✧ At least, that’s how he sees it. (And somehow doesn’t see that he two of you are completely enamoured with each other.)
✧ It’s a little after your third date, when the two of you are sitting together and laughing, that he realises he needs to say it.
✧ He waits until the two of you have stopped, with only smiles gracing your faces. But he can’t wait longer than that.
✧ “I love you!”
✧ The admission rings in the otherwise silence, and then he sees you smile. And he realises that he is worthy of all of this.
✧ Merry eagerly leans into the hug, burying himself in your arms before whispering it again, this time with a grin on his face. “I love you.”
𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧
✧ You actually say it first, while the two of you are walking in Rivendell together. You’re on a more secluded path, and as Pippin asks about your day - and listens - you can tell he truly is absorbed.
✧ There’s passion in his eyes as he listens to you, nodding and asking the right questions, and you realise this is the time to say it.
✧ As an elf you knew you loved Pippin when he confessed to you, and that you would always love Pippin, but you were never sure when you would say it.
✧ As you stare at him, Pippin realises something’s happening and he turns to you with a quizzical look.
✧ “I love you.”
✧ It’s only three words, but Pippin lights up as though you have promised him the world.
✧ “Really?” The grin he gives is incredible, “I love you too!”
𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫
✧ When Boromir confesses to you he’s says almost exactly that, just not using these words.
✧ For him there is something almost sacred about them, a bond more powerful than anything else.
✧ He is also worried about saying these words, and again it’s because he doesn’t want anything to go wrong. He wants to continue being worthy to you.
✧ So, when he confesses how much he loves you, he decides to do it properly. Asking you the day before if you’d meet with him, going to the market and hand picking flowers.
✧ Coming to where he is, you can recognise when he first sees you. Freezing slightly as he looks you up and down, almost as if he can’t believe you’re here, before smiling and welcoming you.
✧ At first it’s just talking. There’s romantic undertones, of course, and then he swallows and you realise he’s going to say something important.
✧ “I… I love you.” He says it proudly, “For all of you. I love you so much, my heart.”
𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐫
✧ Also afraid of confessing his true feelings to you. Although not just because he wants it to be perfect, which he does, but because of more self-worth issues.
✧ That his times with you are some of the best he has, and he doesn’t want any of that to change. He still wants to be able to laugh with you in Gondor, to kiss your hand goodbye and see the smile you give him in return.
✧ He isn’t sure why his mind thinks telling you that would put you off, but it’s a large enough part that he’s slightly hesitant.
✧ As the two of you walk along one of the top segments of Minas Tirith, he turns briefly to look at you. At how perfect this moment is.
✧ And he realises he needs to ask.
✧ “Can I tell you something?” His voice is soft, almost as if he wishes you not to hear it, but you pick it up and give him permission.
✧ Fully turning to you, he takes your hands in his. “I love you.”
✧ The way your eyes light up, and you immediately say it back, washes away the doubts he has.
✧ The kiss you lean into, light but reassuring, helps as well. Just another small gesture of how deeply the two of you feel for each other, and one he will never tire of.
𝐄𝐨𝐰𝐲𝐧
✧ (Éowyn’s eyes drift to the Paths, the rest of your company waiting, before she takes a deep breath. “Then we shall both swear not to fall in battle. We shall both fight to protect who we love.”)
✧ She is another who says how she feels in all but those exact words. And neither of you get a chance to say those words to each other until you’re in the Houses of Healing.
✧ As much as she wants to say it the second you’re awake, she shows some restrain. Waiting to make sure that you’re mostly ok.
✧ The conversation flows decently, but both of you know what she wants to say.
✧ And then the conversation stops.
✧ “I love you!” She blurts it out, and then instantly looks embarrassed. But your grin reassures her, and the red on her cheeks go from blush of embarrassment to a blush of love.
✧ As to not aggravate either of your wounds, she instead holds your hand as tightly as you will allow.
𝐄𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫
✧ Éomer can think of quite a few times when he’s wanted to say those moments to you (and, in all honesty, he could have said them from the moment he confessed.)
✧ But instead he tries to wait, waiting for the perfect time. And then, as he’s sitting at home and watching the fire die down, he realises that there will be no perfect time with you. Because every time is magical, in its own way.
✧ So he resolves to only until he sees you again.
✧ But, as the fire turns to embers, Éomer realises that will be too long of a wait.
✧ It’s almost eleven at night when you hear a knock on your door, and you open it to see him outside, looking up at you.
✧ As soon you open the door he hug you, burying himself in your arms. “I love you. And I should have told you earlier, but I love you.”
𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐝
✧ Bard wants to try and take things slow in the relationship, to fully appreciate each day (and even each moment) that he gets with you.
✧ That doesn’t mean he hasn’t thought about how he’d say those words to you, or potentially how they would sound falling from your lips, but it isn’t something he wants to rush.
✧ It’s something he wants to happen organically, as a product of your relationship rather than a given day.
✧ But still, when he finally confesses, it almost just slips out.
✧ You’re just saying goodbye to each other, and you turn back briefly before you leave, as if waiting for him to say one final remark.
✧ “I’ll see you later, love you.”
✧ The words slip out of his mouth before he can stop them, and he can feel himself blushing once he realises what he’s said - once he sees you frozen in space.
✧ “Did you…” You come slightly closer, “Did you actually just say that?”
✧ Looking into your eyes, he sees his own love reflected back at him. “Yes, I did. And I do.”
𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐢𝐥
✧ For all the elves, the act of saying ‘I love you’ is the largest commitment they will say, in their entire life.
✧ Those words will become like oaths, have them bind themselves to you for all of time, and that can never be taken lightly.
✧ The gift of love is the most meaningful of all, at least to them.
✧ But for Thranduil the weight of those words means even more. It also offers you a kingdom, a new family, and (most importantly to him) he does not want to pressure you.
✧ While sitting together, you can sometimes so clearly tell that he wants to say this to you. The elf will catch you, either over a book or glowing in the sunlight, and he just begins to speak before switching the conversation.
✧ And you catch on to why he hasn’t said that.
✧ Then, it happens again, as the two of you are talking over the fire together and he does that now familiar start of a conversation.
✧ Looking him in the eye, you place your hand over his, “Tell me.”
✧ “Are you sure?”
✧ “Completely.”
✧ “I love you.”
𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫
✧ Despite being a minstrel, his words seem to fail him when he looks at you and tries to confess.
✧ He can write something down, yes. An epic poem or a song that details how he feels about you - but it's never quite enough. There is always something missing from it, something that does not show his love for you properly.
✧ Lindir recognises that it’s because it lacks spontaneity, he’s tried to polish and perfect it to be worthy of you but lost the raw emotion that gives it so much meaning.
✧ Which is why, after he puts down the pen for the third time that evening and thinks, he realises he should just tell you.
✧ There’s a quiet knock on your door, and when you open the door you see Lindir - blushing profusely.
✧ “I love you. I love you more than anything, enough to give up this immortal life, to give up the moon and stars. Because, for me, you are worth more than their light, than their radiance. Even a single smile from you is worth a thousand suns, because you are you. And I love you.”
𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐫
✧ Surprisingly, Haldir says those words to you when he confesses to you.
✧ He’s worried, for many reasons, and one of those is the weight that those words carry. That they may be too much, too soon.
✧ But he resolves to try, and that - on the eve of battle - it wouldn’t be wise to have regrets.
✧ (“I must say something, before this happens.” He reaches out, fingers gently touching your hand and breathing in when you fully embrace it. “You are the one my heart has chosen to fall in love with. Forever. And I apologise for the awkward timing, for not saying something sooner, but I need you to know now. That I love you.”)
𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐧
✧ As good with words as the twin is, the idea of putting all his love for you into three simple words is terrifying.
✧ And, frankly, he doesn’t think it sums up how he feels for you well enough. How can three words encompass all the happiness you give him? All the smiles he has gained because of you? The comfort he has gained because of you? The infinite ways his life has become better?
✧ Then the two of you are together, when you let out a small yawn and he pulls you close.
✧ Cuddling into his chest, you stare up at him for a second, “Thank you, Elladan.”
✧ “Of course.” He doesn’t mean to add the next words on, “I love you.”
✧ Elladan feels when you tense for a second beneath him, then the smile on your face as you look up and whisper, “I love you too.”
✧ Until now, Elladan didn’t understand what those words meant. But now he does, and how much they carry. How obvious it is, when you say those words for him, that you care.
𝐄𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐫
✧ Surprisingly, Elrohir struggles to say the words as well. Not because he doesn’t love you - he’s more sure about his feelings to you than he is most things in his life - but because he isn’t sure what you’ll say.
✧ There’s a degree of elven versus human courting fighting inside him. That, although he’s been clear with the fact he loves you (even jokingly asking you to marry him) that perhaps you thought it was just that, a joke.
✧ That he hasn’t done any of this the correct way, and what if you don’t feel the same way.
✧ You find it slightly odd that, with long days into your relationship, and no words past your lovers lip - that neither of you acknowledge it.
✧ But, although you can’t be sure, you think you start to recognise the problem.
✧ So it’s you who says it to him. “I love you.”
✧ “Really?” Instantly all his attention is on you, cheeks slightly flushed and eyes hanging onto your every word, “Do you really love me?”
✧ “Yes.”
✧ “Meleth nîn, you are my world.”
A/N : Casually drops this after disappearing for three weeks. Well, not disappearing, just not working on these. Sorry for the delay, life's been happening. But I hope you enjoy! Also, here's the remains of my original author's note : (the taglist issue still has not been fixed, so I welcome help!)
First of all, for some reason my taglist isn't working. It's just only tagging the first five people soo... I will try my hardest to fix that. Not sure what's going on with it. Also, the getting flowers was inspired by a drabble recently (can't remember name of author) but the thing that amused me was when they wrote about the flowers matching your eye-colour. Like, my eyes are brown. I'm sure it's supposed to be romantic, and it was very well written, but that just made me laugh.

Regarding Boromir, his death scene, and redemption / repentance (book vs film)
A bit of a callback to my original post on the topic of redemption, and inspired by a post calling (correctly) Boromir's trying to take the Ring one moment of weakness. I think I've finally figured out (I was low-key aware of it, but never put it into so many words) why I like the book version of Boromir's last moments much more than the film version, and why it pains me the film version seems to be what so many people prefer and so many fic writers inevitably reach for.
"I tried to take the Ring from Frodo. I am sorry. I have paid." ... "Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed." "No!" said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. "You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fail!"
Emphases mine, obviously, but when I think about it it's quite telling in which order they tell each other the things they say, and of course how exactly they say them.
The most important thing here, though it is on both their minds and it is what connects them and what their personal motivation is, isn't Gondor. Yes, Boromir is very worried about the fate of his country, but the first thing he tells Aragorn is what he has done, and that he is sorry.
And the very first thing Aragorn tells Boromir is assure him that he did not fail.
It's not a question of warrior honour, the way the film states it ("You fought bravely. You kept your honour."). It's a question of the main conflict of the book, that between the Ring's temptations and the ability to see it as the evil artifact it is.
The film keeps framing a lineage / authority / responsibility conflict between Boromir and Aragorn that's finally resolved, but that's not at all the conflict that matters (or, really, even exists) here. What Boromir is actually saying in relation to Gondor is "I now recognise that what I tried to do to save my people would have actually doomed them, and I recognise you have indeed been much wiser in this than I from the start. Please keep doing that, I can't change what I did now because I'm about to die." And some of it is present in the film, definitely, but it's muddled with the whole issue of both Aragorn and Boromir questioning Aragorn's legitimacy. Which means in the film Boromir's death scene ends up serving us Boromir repenting his behaviour towards Aragorn and... I hope we can all agree that's actually not the point Tolkien was making with Boromir's death scene in the book.
One moment of weakness. Boromir immediately saw that what he had done was wrong, and tried to make amends the only way he could at the moment. He did not keep trying to pursue Frodo, except to apologise (which admittedly Aragorn does not know, but it's still inherent in what Boromir tells him here). Boromir let go of the Ring even after being very, very sorely tempted, and Aragorn can see that. That IS a huge victory. THAT is a huge victory.
And the film frames that main conflict as it played out in the breaking of the Fellowship... wrong. The film leaves us with Boromir the man who succumbed to temptation, and died for his sins, and Aragorn the man who did not succumb and lived, and Boromir submits to the latter. That's not what happens in the book. In the book Aragorn simply never really went through a full moment of culmination of long-term temptation like that. Aragorn recognised and respected Boromir as someone who had reached the moment of culmination of long-term temptation, succumbed, and saw the light anyway. Meanwhile Boromir thinks he's paying for his sin and basically doomed, so Aragorn assures him that no, it was just a moment of weakness and he has overcome it. (Oh, and what also happens in the book is that after a long period of temptation even Frodo succumbs, and lives.)
My main problem with the film version is that the films inadvertently downplayed the main conflict and main theme of the whole story and served up the wrong moral.

Hi! How do you think each of the LOTR characters would kiss? (Frodo is my favorite, but I'd love to hear your thoughts/headcanons for all of them) 😊
OH HO YESSS
Been wanting to do this one for a bit. This is one of my favorite things to write & TBH I’m surprised I went this long without doing it…let’s get it 😏
What Type of Kisser is Each LoTR Character?
Aragorn
So passionate in his every motion, lips sliding tenderly against yours like they belong there. Tends to cup your cheek or trace the curves of your cheekbone as he pulls you in. While he is the one guiding the kiss, he adapts easily to your pace, happy to take his time and savor you or devour you at your unspoken choosing. Also uses more tongue than he looks like he would…
Legolas
You barely remember how it happens sometimes, a sudden embrace turning into a kiss as Legolas’s arms hold you fast, sliding up and down your sides as his dark eyes glance hesitantly into yours for just a moment. A moment quickly passed as one of his hands breaks free only to brush your face as his lips meet yours sweetly. His hands remain upon your waist as he presses a long, warm kiss to your lips. Surprise him with a little bite, he loves it far more than he would ever admit!
Boromir
His hands always end up in your hair, tangling in it if it’s long or simply running his hands gently over it. Somehow knows exactly what you like, your favored pace, just where to run his hands next. A bit of a tease, pulling away just to see if you chase him or frown, only to return and give you what you wanted and more. Sometimes his grip slides lower to your waist or your back as his nails run down, almost always he ends up giving you at least one little nip between kisses…
Gimli
Pulls you in with both hands guiding your cheek or beneath your chin, crashing his lips to yours with reckless abandon. You can feel the pleasant surprise bloom across his pursing lips when you meet him with the same fire, his tongue darting out to the edge of your mouth looking for invitation. Kissing him is like exercise, bold, breathless, and invigorating all at once- with Gimli, both of you will be left feeling indomitable.
Frodo
Kisses with Frodo usually start with his lips upon your head or cheek before he pulls away, blue eyes gazing into yours. His lashes flutter tentatively before he leans in and his lips caress yours. Not one for messy kisses, but his soft motions pour every word of love he is too shy to speak straight to your rapidly beating heart. Frodo adores resting his forehead against yours after you separate, holding you against him as he wishes for the bliss to last forever.
Sam
The sweetest actually. Never not smiling at you lovestruck before and after any kisses you share. Sam peers at you like you raise the morning sun before tugging you closer by your joined hands, lips meeting yours with soft, loving awe. Slow, sensual kisses are his favorite as he takes time to savor every part, every motion, of your beautiful lips. If he feels you smile into the kiss, though, he’s lost, probably picking up the pace much faster than he realizes!
Merry
So playful and joyful whenever he gets the privilege of claiming your lips. You’ll be able to feel Merry smiling into the kiss as he presses just a bit deeper with each go. He likes to hold the small of your back as you meet. Casually slides his tongue in there as if he’s teasing you, and how can you deny him? Be warned: the more you try to keep up, though, the more he goes at it! Kissing Merry is like a game, one that leaves you without breath.
Pippin
It’s never just one kiss; Pippin is too addicted to your lips. Even if you just lean in for a peck, Pippin is pulling you in to deepen the kiss and taste your lips again and again. Whether he realizes how madly eager you get because of his little habit you don’t know, but you see no need to correct him. Prefers the simple feeling of connection to exploring your mouth, but every kiss you share is full of plenty of love and passion.
Faramir
Takes both of your hands in his as his means of pulling you close before his lips ghost tentatively over yours. They quickly pick up confidence as he feels you against him, the way you squeeze his hands gently. No little pecks here, Faramir’s kisses are long, long enough for him to tell you again and again what you mean to him and how he relishes in the soft glow of your warmth. He is happy to lead or let you lead so long as you indulge his love for you.
Eomer
Rough would probably be the best way to describe Eomer’s kisses. His lips crashing into yours, the scattered nips you feel, moving fast as you’ll let them, but still loving, almost reverent, somehow. You can feel him taking control, but can you truly complain beneath such a head-spinning kiss or the way his hands softly roam? For all that and all the lines about tongues battling, his kisses never feel like war, but like the cry beforehand, a declaration of will to fight for all one loves.
Haldir
Tends to start with a gentlemanly kiss to your hand before slowly meeting your eyes, seeing the shine therein and falling into your gravity. Hesitant as the first press of his lips upon yours is, the rush sets in and Haldir is soon holding you flush against him, enjoying the feeling of your hands upon his chest as he claims your lips. Private kisses are his favorite, taking in your ravishing beauty away form prying eyes or any distractions from relishing the feeling of you, exploring every inch of your mouth if the mood so takes him.
Eowyn
Her kisses are so sweet and joy-filled, you just know she’s experiencing sweet relief every time. Might even giggle a bit in between as she loves to peck your lips again and again before you finally grab her face and hold her there, kissing her hard enough to make her swoon. She loves to take your hand or wrap it around your back, some way to feel in complete connection as your lips move in their passionate harmony.
Arwen
Enjoys sneaking up on you from behind, lips pressing first to your neck or cheek until you turn around, instantly connecting with her. She loves to throw her arms around you in full surrender, time seemingly stopped as you enjoy the glide of her lips over yours and little more. Long kisses are her favorite, the ones where you forget about the world and live in the feeling of your synchronized pauses of breath, the way her arms trace up and down yours, perhaps a playful flick of her tongue…
Elrond
So incredibly gentle, pressing his lips to yours as if they could break. His grip on your back is just as gentle, the faintest of contact tethering your unity. The look he gives you afterward is enough to melt you, shocking him with the way you yank him back in, but his quick response shows no complaint. The second kiss is always more passionate, the one where you can feel the corners of Elrond’s mouth arch in amusement and his hand wrap around your shoulder.
Lindir
Shy at first, always seemingly wondering where to put his hands as they hover. The moment you deepen the kiss, though, they’re glued to your waist like they’re meant to be there. His motions are soft, delicate, intentional as if you were his latest artwork. Goes absolutely weak in the knees if you wrap your legs around him, his hands moving like they have minds of their own to hold you up even though his has completely blanked, knowing only this feeling of you fully his. Happier than anything to let you lead, moving in total surrender to your wonderful will.

the fellowship and if i’d punch them in the face and likelihood of me doing so:
note: i have punched people in the face exactly two (2) times in my life. once when we were kids i decked my sister on the trampoline and most recently i hit a friend in my sleep when reaching for my alarm in a dazed state. the likelihood of me punching anyone in the face, intentionally and maliciously is very, very slim.
frodo: no. if i would not punch most people and frodo is a representation of “most people” i cannot see myself punching him. also i feel as if any disagreements would be felt verbally and swiftly, and an agreement would be met rather quickly. he seems like a reasonable guy. 3/10 i do not feel as though it would happen or that if given the chance i would proceed
sam: no. is a really good friend and person. least punchable out of the hobbits and i feel like if we’d got in a fight it would end up with dirt being flung at each other not punches. worse case scenario i feel like if we really got into it it would be passive aggressive or cast-iron based bludgeoning. 2/10 would not harm a hair on this man’s toes
merry: no. he has little cousin energy- i’d give him a noogie and pinch his cheeks but never sock him in the face. i could see us roughhousing and maybe even exchange blows but in the face? nah. just look at the little guy. i love his lopsided lil smirk. 4/10 limited fisticuffs, nothing serious
pippin: yes. he seems like he needs a good face full of knuckles and who am i to deny him. especially when he was younger. i like the dude but it just seems like something that would happen. im sure gandalf would slip me a pocket full of coins after. 8/10 would clobber this fellow
legolas: yes. almost certainly. would i get shot to shit by a million arrows? oh absolutely, but that would not stop me. i’m going at that man like a balrog out of moria. i don’t know why exactly i want to punch this pretty boy so bad but i know i do. 9.5/10 would punch again
gimli: no. one of least punchable of the fellowship in my eyes- one, because he would absolutely body me if i so much as raised a hand and two because i would never. he’d have to say some pretty insane shit to even get me to consider. 1/10 no jabs ever exchanged
gandalf: maybe. it can go either way. on the one hand, he is an immortal demi god who has been through hell and back so what’s one more fist to the face- on the other hand he takes the form of a grandpa which means i’d have a harder time mentally. however i’m naturally predisposed to punching wizards so given the right opportunity, yes. 5/10 chance of slugging
aragorn: no. he’d drop kick me to valinor before i could even raise my fist. also, he just seems like a chill guy. i feel like the only possible reason id ever even consider fighting this man is if i needed to die honorably very quickly and by a noble hand or if i had a chance at winning arwens hand, like a joust for the princess of sorts. i’d still lose, though. 2/10, id absolutely miss any hit thrown his way. complete biffage.
boromir: no. i’d let this man punch me and thank him for it. he is a fundamentally like able dude. how could i harm this beautiful man, a single father of two full grown adult hobbits. i just have so much love for him in my heart that i can’t even imagine raising a hand against him. 0/10 will not lay a finger on this lovely large lad.
gollum: yes. id punt this little bastard across mordor in my sleep. unprovoked. i hate his crust nails and his black hole of a loincloth. i feel bad for him, sure, but not bad enough to stop me from giving him a good ol fashioned wallop. 12/10 im gonna beat him up with my own two handsies, precious.
