A few more details below.

Aside from making it look like a regal portrait, my main focus here was to highlight their personalities and almost make a... teaser? Effect? As in, give a striking image and idea of the characters to someone whho wouldn’t know the story or books.

It was a bit of a technical challenge since this type of lighting isn’t what I'm the most comfortable with. I also had to design Lu Shen and He Yunxing whom I had never drawn before. I'm quite happy with how they came out. I also find Beiyuan’s expression incredibly obnoxious, which is great, and I was happy to push and refine my Helian Yi design.

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei:

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.

I dont know what they are called) but a-yuan gets the worse treatment. I think the matron is Wang Lingjiao. And then the Lan comes and wants to adopt him. There are trial time i think for a-yuan to decide if he wants to be adopted or not but in the end he accept. Then the Lan announced that they are searching for someone (WWX). I think its because a-yuan asked them? I dont remember why. And then WWX comes using a bus but when he arrived he saw that a-yuan is happy so he go back. I think Su She who work as security for the lan noticed him and chased WWX away. I think he followed WWX too. After that Su She noticed a pendant that WWX wears and accused him for stealing. I've been looking for a specific cannon divergent fic. I remember everything mostly going the same up until the end of the Sunshot campaign.

For some reason, the wens aren't killed off. A new original character is put in charge. Either NHS, WWX or JZX thinks something is up with the new wen clan leader an sect leader Jin.

For some reason WWX ends up in cloud recesses. Marriage or healing?

There are also two memorable sect conferences in the story where JGS uses demonic cultivation (either WWX's work or help from the new wen sect) to control people. The first one is used to upset the sect leader's and get them angry. WWX finds out about this one and tells people. For the most part it backfires, and JGS tries to blame it on him then uses someone else as a scapegoat. JYL is pregnant with JL, and the array makes her feel sick and leave. I don't think NMJ was affected though.

The second time, an array is hidden in JGS bedroom and is like some kind of aphrodisiac/compulsion array for JGS to assault some young woman.

In the end, JGS next victim kills him publicly and the Jin and Wen sects are exposed. Wen Qing is the next Wen leader and the Jin sect has a lot of restructuring to do. @hopesteapot-blog

Overall, knowing how the story progressed, ep 3 is the last one where humor definitely outweighed the angst, and any hints for our characters' backstories were merely sketches. We get a lot of running around collecting clues, with Bai Jiu being the main comic relief, the girls not far behind, and everyone roasting the hell out of ZYZ while he only sometimes nips back, pretty jovially, and mainly at ZYC.

Right in the middle of the sleuthing shenanigans, we have a beautiful conversation about dreams, human nature, how everyone wishes for something, how everyone has something they want to escape from. We get a mention of the Truth Eye, together with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it wistful look from ZYZ that makes so much sense later.

We find out that ZYC doesn't dream; in WX's memory, we hear ZYC's explanation of why he fears to dream, and for the umpteenth time on this rewatch, I went (say it with me), foreshadowingggg!

Aaaaaand we get introduced to our sexy possessive demon, though we have no clue who the heck he is at this point, only that he knows ZYZ and is clearly uhhhh conflicted about him.

Also holy shit but only now on the rewatch did I realize what the illusion Ran Yi tried to use on ZYZ was - and why ZYZ was so freaked out... (all together now: foreshadowing!!!! I swear if I took a shot each time I say it while rewatching I'd put myself in a goddamn coma.)

Huh, Ran Yi thought ZYZ had the Truth Eye... on the first watch we still don't quite know what that is, only that it helps to see through the illusions, so it would make sense that ZYZ has it. Rewatching, and knowing that he doesn't, *and* what happened to it... makes for a nice little circle going back to LL's introduction.

Speaking of the devil, the possessive demon is gonna possess (*and* also look good while at it):

ZYZ flashing back to the younger, softer LL just as he half shields WX from what he knows is a completely different animal *now*, is absolutely not hitting me in any feels, nope:

(There's also something to be said about the fact that ZYZ is not surprised by LL possessing some (not so) random dude, so even on the first watch we're bound to assume that it happened before and ZYZ is not a fan. We don't get to see any of those instances, but one sentence from ZYZ is enough.)

WX immediately recognizes LL's name but still thinks it was him who killed her shifu, simply because being tossed aside like a rag doll by him is the last thing she remembers from that day...

I was close to screeching at my screen when he activated the true seeing in her, and not only is he ::gestures at the whole of him:: but then she looks to the side and ZYZ looks like *that*, and the effect is still not lost on me on the second viewing:

They made sure to end almost every ep with a well timed cliffhanger, but since we don't have to worry about that anymore, on to ep 4!

I'll just leave this pretty shot here before I go, because those swirly things are so cool (and so unsettling when put in context):

A few demons try to stir up drama by telling MK that Red Son is cheating on him with his best friend. MK is just really confused because do they, like, not know what an open relationship is?

Kang Yi was unafraid to admit he was proud.

He knew his value. That was it.

Sure, his family was a family of weasel demons with only the barest grips on nobility and were only wealthy thanks to his older sister, but he was worth something. He prided himself on his beauty and his grace, knowing how to surround himself with the people who recognized his worth.

He deserved the best spouse, but none of the kids at his college were worthy, and the matchmaker failed to find anyone. Yi was afraid that he would never find someone worthy...

That is until the Demon Bull King came roaring into existence.

The minute that Yi saw the guy announce himself as the Monkie Kid, Sun Wukong's successor, he knew he had found the perfect spouse. Sure, the guy was a delivery boy at some lame noodle spot, but he could be fixed.

Unfortunately, by the time Yi had arranged their first meeting, someone else had scooped Qi Xiaotian up.

The relationship between Qi Xiaotian and Hong Hai'er, Demon Bull King's only son and heir, was enough to send demon society whispering. Some thought that one of them had cast a spell over the other, or that it was arranged. Slowly, though, details leaked out to fill in the image, and it seemed to be the perfect love match.

Seemed.

One of Yi's cronies had found something out, something that would certainly break the couple apart.

Yi bit back a grin as he and some of his friends stalked down the street. Qi Xiaotian was sweeping outside, a brown monkey tail wagging along to whatever music was playing in beat-up headphones. He turned and revealed he was mouthing along to it, a smile creasing a sweet face.

Yi thought he heard someone sigh dreamily behind him, but he refused to answer it. Instead, he pulled out his phone, pulling up the picture, and focused on making a concerned expression.

"Excuse me?" he called, his future husband pausing and turning fully. "Are you Qi Xiaotian?"

"Yep!" he said, smiling fully. It was like the sun was in that smile and Yi felt his legs go a little weak. "Are you here for a picture? An autograph?" He struck a pose and grinned. "Make sure to get my good side!"

That was definitely a dreamy sigh. "Actually," Yi said, making his voice soft. "I have something awful to tell you." He turned his phone to Xiaotian, revealing the picture of the Demon Bull Prince fully kissing some girl in green. "Your boyfriend is cheating on you."

He expected a gasp. A yell of shock. Maybe some tears or denial.

Instead, Xiaotian looked at the picture, raised a brow, and then looked up. "Haven't you heard of polyamory?"

...

What.

"The girl is my best friend, Long Xiaojiao."

...

What.

"We're sharing Red, kinda as a best friend thing and he's plenty enough bull for two." There was definitely a laugh from behind Yi.

...

What.

"I just couldn't come to the date that day. Actually," he leaned in, his shy smile turning into a confused grimace. "How did you even get that picture? Red refuses to have pictures of PDA posted."

Um.

His face darkened. "Were you stalking them?" He raised a hand to his ear, revealing an earring of a distinct red and gold staff. The air seemed to crackle and pop with power.

It was at that moment that Yi remembered he was a weasel.

A fragile, easily squishable, weasel.

He took off running.

Oh my goodness, now that we've seen how it ends, the fucking parallels/contrasts between Ran Yi in episode 5 and Zhao Yuanzhou...

Ran Yi says to Zhao Yuanzhou in episode 5:

"I'm a sinful man. I don't know how to face all the promises I made. I just hope she can consider it a dream. The road is muddy in the dream. She'll see the light after she wakes up. The world is desolate. Take care."

Zhao Yuanzhou understands all too well facing up to your past actions/promises. But unlike Ran Yi, he is prepared to face his rather than hide away. They both did terrible things - took lives - because of circumstances that were not their fault. Zhao Yuanzhou lost control of the malicious qi and was controlled by the malicious qi when he killed. Ran Yi was badly injured and instinctively killed to feed on malicious qi to survive... however, of the two of them Zhao Yuanzhou was the more in control. He did have a choice (both as in he could have chosen not to kill, even though the consequence would have been his death, and as in he chose who to kill, specifically targeting brides in the hope of delaying his beloved's father from forcing her into an unwanted marriage). Of the two of them, objectively Ran Yi's crimes are greater, because he was in control, if desperate, and chose to kill. Zhao Yuanzhou had no choice in the matter, no control. Yet he is the one who has chosen to face those he hurt and pay for his crimes.

And again we have the dream imagery/references to dreaming - Ran Yi hopes Miss Qi will be able to live on without him, regarding their affair as a dream with muddy roads, which she has woken up from. He sees the world as desolate, and his dream with Miss Qi as fleeting and beautiful but inevitably doomed to failure - muddy roads that will not allow them to escape. He wants to hide from the world and her, thinking she will be better off without him.

Zhao Yuanzhou's final words are that meeting his friends has been like a beautiful dream... but dreams must end, and it's time to wake up. He sees the world as worth saving, worth sacrificing himself for. Instead of hiding from the world, he has embraced the dream, temporary though it may be, experiencing love and loss and friendship, and though he doesn't want it to end, he is willing to sacrifice his dream - and himself - for the sake of the world.

And this is Zhao Yuanzhou's expression after Ran Yi said his piece above:

Could you mention the spirit foxes you know please? The best known is Su Daji, and I know the story of Jade Fox (she's so cool. She fought Erlang), but I've wanted to know more. I also knows about the fox spirits from Strange tales from a Chinese studio.

JTTW foxes are like the Red Shirts of demons

The earliest "maybe" fox spirit is Yu the Great's wife, the Girl of Tushan. Basically, when he arrived at Tushan, he saw a nine-tailed fox, heard the locals singing about it, and decided to marry a girl there.

There are two readings of the text: 1) the fox is just an auspicious sign from Heaven, telling Yu to get married, and 2) the fox is an avatar, or transformation of the Girl of Tushan. Later Qing legends certainly favor the second reading, with foxes referring to themselves as the descendents of Tushan.

The other "maybe" fox spirit is Chunhu("Pure Fox"), Houyi's wife. Now, I heard you asking: "But wait! Isn't Houyi's wife Chang'e?" Well...there are actually two "Yi" in Chinese mythos-history.

The "Yi" people are most familiar with, who shot down the Sun Crows, supposedly lived in the time of Sage King Yao, while the "Yi" married to Chunhu was from the Xia dynasty.

(Rough timeline: Yao —> Shun —> Yu the Great —> his son Qi, founder of the Xia dynasty)

Basically, Houyi usurped Qi's son, Tai Kang, and seized his throne, then Han Zhuo usurped and killed him while he was out hunting.

According to 左传 + Qu Yuan's 天问 and 离骚, Chunhu played a vital part in this: a dark-skinned beauty, she was originally Hebo's wife, until Houyi killed her husband with an arrow and forcefully seized her, then she plotted with Han Zhuo to murder Houyi and became his wife.

Since Chunhu could also be written as Xuanhu("Dark Fox"), some scholars suggested that her clan might have used a black fox as their totem or worshipped such a divine beast. Unlike the Girl of Tushan, the implication of her being an actual fox wasn't as strong, but she did fit into that "plotting temptress" stereotype that would later be connected to fox spirits.

There is this one strange trivia in the Northern-Southern dynasty 搜神记 that goes: "All foxes come from this one slutty woman in ancient times called Ah Zi(阿紫), who turned into a fox, therefore fox spirits often refer to themselves with that name too."

The Ming dynasty novel, 三遂平妖传, is all about this family of foxes and how they were behind Wang Ze's failed rebellion in the Song dynasty: "Sagely Old Lady", her daughter Hu Mei'er/Yong'er, and her son Hu Chu'er/Zuo Chu.

When they passed Wu Zetian's tomb, her ghost appeared in Sagely Old Lady's dream, telling her that she would soon reincarnate into a male body, and that Mei'er is actually the reincarnation of her paramour, Zhang Liulang, and they promised to be husband and wife in every life.

When she woke up, Mei'er was missing, so she just went on and cultivated 72 Daoist arts using the Heavenly Scroll this Egg Monk guy stole from a cave. Meanwhile, Mei'er landed in an enunch's garden, was adopted as his daughter, tried to charm the Crown Prince by disguising herself as a consort and got insta-killed by Guan Yu the guardian deity.

She reincarnated again as Yong'er, and reunited with Sagely Old Lady and her brother, who taught her Daoist arts and began to plot a rebellion. They managed to convince Wang Ze, a minor official, into leading it——who just happened to be Wu Zetian's reincarnation, so naturally Yong'er married him.

Alas, their rebellion was not to be: Egg Monk, disgusted by their behaviors, left to seek help from the Mystic Lady of the Nine Heavens, and, with the arts she taught, crushed the rebels.

Yong'er and Zuo Chu got struck dead by divine thunderbolts, while Sagely Old Lady was spared thanks to her fellow heavenly foxes' pleadings, but sentenced to guard the Heavenly Scroll forever.

This wouldn't be the first time Wu Zetian was associated with foxes: in the Qing dynasty novel, Flowers in the Mirror(镜花缘), she straight up is the Heart Moon Fox(心月狐) incarnate, one of the 28 Lunar Mansions.

She reincarnated because the two Sui emperors kept complaining in the Underworld about how they were usurped by the Tang, until the Celestial Court went "Okay, fine, we'll send one of our own to usurp the Tang dynasty too. Happy?"

Which, like Daji, is very much in line with the "A powerful woman? *gasp* She must be a fox demoness!" literary tradition.

Okay, an AU in the Qi Ye universe where ZZS is doing his spy business for Helian Yi in preparation for war and ends up frequently meeting people and gathering intel at a small, unassuming tea house (listen, coffee isn't historically accurate here, let me live lol) that WKX owns and operates.

WKX's workers think he's insane because he INSISTS that different customers (yes, even the old woman) are, in fact, the same man and he's hellbent on figuring out who that man is and what he actually looks like because he must be very beautiful. WKX's employees are too afraid of getting fired to question him but they do talk shit about him behind his back and think he's going insane.

ZZS is getting increasingly annoyed by this tea house owner who bothers him incessantly no matter what disguise he's wearing and how much everyone else pays him no mind. He starts to think WKX is also a spy, working for an enemy of the state, and that leads to him visiting even more to try and figure out who WKX really is. All the roads lead to dead-ends but ZZS is undeterred and determined to figure out what's going on.

Plot twist: WKX is in fact working for someone (forgive me, I have not reread Qi Ye in a minute so I'm not sure who exactly but I guess one of Helian Yi's brothers) and the tea house is a front. Neither of them figure out the whole truth until they're facing off on the battlefield.

Morning dawns over the city and ZZS is sleeping peacefully in bed in his room, but his rest is interrupted by WKX's violent intrusion into the room without knocking. WKX loudly addresses Ah Xu and asks if he is still asleep. He goes to the bed and tells ZZS to get up. ZZS does not respond, and WKX suggests that ZZS go with him to Yuefan Tower. Seeing the lack of response, ZZS adds that it is almost noon and time to get up. WKX removes ZZS's blanket and adds that apparently this tower has the best view of Yueyang City and tells ZZS to get up again. ZZS pushes WKX's hand away with his eyes closed, and when he suggests that they go, he replies that he is not going. WKX insists that they go, and ZZS, still not opening his eyes, pushes WKX away again, telling him to leave him. When he is ordered to go again, ZZS violently replies that if WKX continues to grumble, he will kill him. The untiring WKX, leaning over ZZS, still suggests that they go to the tower, and ZZS covers himself with a blanket. WKX explains that the day can be spent sadly or happily. He explains that if the flowers have bloomed, they should be picked. He asks ZZS why he is doing this to himself. He grabs ZZS again, who begins to fight WKX, saying that he has not, and then turns his back to WKX. On the lake located in the city, there is a boat with four old men on it. Two of them are playing instruments, one is practicing with a sword, and the last one is listening to music. On the top floor of the Yuefan Tower stand ZZS and WKX. Both men are looking straight ahead. WKX fans himself with a fan. ZZS explains that these old men are the Four Sages of Anji. Curious, WKX asks who they are. ZZS replies that they are a breath of fresh air in Jianghu, adding that they are all masters of music but come from different backgrounds. WKX listens with interest. ZZS says that they have become soulmates with common interests and left Jianghu to live peacefully together in the beautiful bamboo forest of Anji. They have not been seen anywhere for over ten years. WKX states that it is no wonder that they can create such heavenly music. ZZS continues, saying that two of them are a pair and both were once students of the same clan. The third is a scholar, has no fighting skills but is good at playing the zither, and the last of them is the Lonely Master Thief, He Yi Fan. ZZS explains that HYF, even when he was at the bottom of the gutter, always looked up at the stars. His three friends made HYF abandon his path of evil and live with others in the forest. In the end, ZZS states that in this way they became soulmates like Yu Bo Ya and Zhong Zi Qi. After a moment of silence, WKX repeats the names of the characters from legends that ZZS spoke of and states that it is not easy to find such soulmate. ZZS replies that the world itself is not important, what is important is finding a soulmate. Hearing these words, WKX looks at ZZS with great tenderness, who smiles gently and looks into the distance. After a while, ZZS looks at WKX and says in his mind that if it were not for the fact that he has little time left, wouldn't it be great to travel around Jianghu with a soulmate and spend the rest of his life like the Four Sages of Anji. He states that why be pessimistic, living like this for two or three years is better than wasting your entire life. They both stand on a tower and look into the distance. Two perfect scenes. The first shows that WKX already treats ZZS as a soulmate and quite boldly invites him to admire the city together. The second is a classic and memorable scene referring to the symbolism of soulmate. ZZS talks so beautifully about Anja's wise men and finally understands that he too would like to spend the rest of his life with someone close to him. WKX is a bit silent here, maybe he finally realizes that he should let ZZS speak, because when ZZS speaks, it soothes WKX's heart and soul. ZZH and GJ showed their acting skills at the highest +(1)

What is your favourite quote or scene?

In the end, this is an easy choice for me. There's beautiful wistfulness in this moment that never fails to make me emotional. I has stayed with me from the first time I read it.

"Beiyuan!" Helian Yi abruptly called out. Jing Qi looked back at him, the gloomy color of his collar that was getting flipped up by the wind lining up against his pointed chin. The smile at the corners of his mouth hadn't yet faded, his peach blossom-esque eyes raised slightly and shining brightly, his slender brows curving towards his temples—he was shockingly handsome.  Helian Yi's heart skipped a beat. He regretted calling out to him like that.  "Your Majesty?" Helian Yi paused, then slowly took a few steps forward. Under the impression that he wanted to say something, Jing Qi leaned over, only to be caught off guard by the other hugging him. A cheek that had been blasted ice-cold by the night wind was pressed close against his neck, as if he was about to be roughly dragged off his steed and firmly forced into Helian Yi's arms.

The horse took a few tiny steps in place. Jing Qi was stunned for a second, hand still clutching the reins, and didn't know how he ought to react. Three hundred years... he had once waited three hundred years just for this hug. Yet, now that he had long refused to wait any longer, he had been put into this awkward position without warning. His shoulders were pulled down low, pushed into the hollow of Helian Yi's own. It wasn't the least bit warm, solely causing sorrow to emerge in one's heart. If only... if only, in the previous life, you weren't the Rongjia Emperor, and I wasn't Prince Nan'ning.

"Why must it be you that goes?" Helian Yi had kept bearing with this, but ultimately couldn't bear with not speaking these words softly into Jing Qi's ear, for him alone to hear. Coming to this point, he already couldn't hold in even a bit of selfishness, and with manifold reluctance to part with him, he could only say this solely to him.  Jing Qi blinked, then replied with the same sort of softness, "Have you forgotten, Your Majesty? I'm the only one that knows the route."

Helian Yi closed his eyes. "Beiyuan..." Back when I told you to leave, why didn't you?

It was only the chance of having another calamity indebted to him that led Hua Cheng to agree to Black Water’s request. Aside from that, the whole affair was painfully ordinary. That Gods were immoral and self interested, Hua Cheng already knew. He’d seen what they’d done to His Highness, how they’d abandoned him, mistreated him, destroyed everything good within him, leading him to self destruction. Hua Cheng had seen the only good person in the world die. Compared to that, what was a god stealing a man’s fate to protect his undeserving brother?

Why Black Water felt the need to keep Hua Cheng updated on his progress was anyone’s guess. Perhaps he wanted Crimson Flower to know his investment was put to good use, although Hua Cheng had made no such requests. Or perhaps he just needed to vent his frustrations regarding his targets, and knew there was no one else who could be trusted with his confusion.

“Wind Master is only acting so generous because he’s never had to work for anything,” Black Water complained once, baffled once more by Shi Qingxuan’s insistence to befriend ‘Ming Yi’. “It’s easy to be nice when you’ve never suffered.”

Hua Cheng was struck by that remark to a degree that surprised him. He would later consider that they were days away from the anniversary of His Highness’s demise, meaning his thoughts were oriented in a certain direction. But when Hua Cheng heard this complaint from his fellow Calamity, his first thought was that he’d heard people say the same of the prince of Xianle, once. As adored as his Highness had been before disaster struck, there had already been those who would say his kindness was that of a boy too young and lucky to understand the cruelty of life. Even as a young child, Hua Cheng had found the argument dubious. Qi Rong had been proof that a life of comfort a kind man did not make.

Hua Cheng, bored after centuries of aimless existence, found himself curious about Wind Master, that god who shouldn’t have ascended.

It was easy enough to meet the Wind Master, who often left the heavenly realm to have some fun in the mortal one. Hua Cheng only had to take the form of a charming youth and he was easily invited to share drinks with a pretty and careless boy whose money never ran out. That first meeting left him disappointed. Shi Qingxuan could not hold the comparison to His Highness. He lacked the depth, the sincere drive to change the world for the better. Shi Qingxuan had nothing to recommend him except a pleasant face and a powerful brother.

The first had little appeal to Hua Cheng, who had seen more than his share of beauty. The second disgusted him, reminding him of Qi Rong while his cousin lived. 

When Hua Cheng met Wind Master again, the god was an elegant woman with a mischievous smile. 

They'd met by coincidence this time, Hua Cheng being interested in the same business that had brought the god among mortals. And he'd heard of course that Wind Master sometimes took a female shape, but Black Water had made it sound like something forced upon him. Instead, Wind Master seemed to truly enjoy that shape. An oddity, when Hua Cheng knew gods to be proud and desperate to maintain their reputation. 

So was Shi Qingxuan, Hua Cheng found over other encounters. His pride merely rested on other foundations that all those parading peacocks.

Hua Cheng was intrigued. Fascinated, some might have said, though noone was foolish enough to voice that thought, and he refused to realise it himself.

As for Shi Qingxuan, his first reaction once he understood that he’d met the same charming young man many times over many decades was one of fear. Understandable, for one pursued by the Reverend of Empty Words. But seeing that his luck hadn’t turned, that Hua Cheng never caused him harm over any of their encounters, Shi Qingxuan warmed up again.

“Ghost or God or human, as long as you’re fun to drink with and harm no one, who really cares?” was the most he ever said on the subject, before dropping it for good.

Hua Cheng could have objected that he did cause harm, more than Shi Qingxuan could imagine. In an unkind world, he saw no reason to be kind.

Shi Qingxuan wouldn’t have understood.

Shi Qingxuan was an innocent, the same way His Highness had been until the drought and the plague. He still believed his brother was a good man, that justice would prevail. Yet he'd also seen enough of the world's darkness to understand that rules must be bent, that the line between good and evil could be a fine one, especially among gods and ghosts. 

Hua Cheng was surprised the day he realised he was impatient for Shi Qingxuan's next visit to the mortal realm, though not as surprised as he might have been, once. After eight centuries of dullness, finally an entertaining person had been brought into his life.

An unfortunate realisation, perhaps, when Black Water had just warned him that he was finally ready to strike Shi Wudu. Hua Cheng suspected that Black Water would lack the resolve to eliminate both of the brothers that had stolen his fate, because Shi Qingxuan's warmth was pernicious. But Shi Qingxuan would hardly escape unscathed. Hua Cheng might get a chance to see how sincere that warmth was, once stripped of wealth and luck. 

The idea was not without appeal. The suspicion that someone had once toyed that way with His Highness made it repulsive. 

Hua Cheng might have to rescue Shi Qingxuan from Black Water's just revenge, then. This, too, had its appeal. It would cause an open conflict between two Calamities, yes, but Hua Cheng had no doubt he could win that war, and Shi Qingxuan's smiles might be worth letting the world burn.

2. Hi there! I've been trying to find this fic to re-read for a while now and I'm hoping that someone else recognizes it (and that it's not deleted!)

I believe it was in the "LWJ marries the Yiling Patriarch" category and there was a Yiling Wei sect or something similar (although it's been a very long time and I don't recall anyone else actually being in the sect so I could be wrong on either/both counts). WWX often went back and forth between the Burial Mounds and Baoshan Sanren's mountain via portal (?) as they were trying to cure Lan Yi of her spiritual malady (?). Last I still remember it was a WIP, and one of the little details that sticks in my mind was that BSSR had gotten WWX doing decorative knotwork to keep his hands busy, so the palace had incredibly intricate pieces, like, everywhere, and he often gifted it to people.

Jgy forced them to go to lanling (honestly i think he kinda kidnapped them). I think he found out that a-yuan is wwx son and used him to lure out wwx.
