i just can't convey the frustration and sorrow that it's been to grow up at first without the internet and then watching it bloom into this useful, fun, connecting force you sometimes spent time on, only for it to degrade into this constant oppressive waste of time and energy where people are constantly pumping out algorithmically designed content for max algorithmic appeal and even the most simple search generates either no results or an infinite abyss of ai generated slop none of which is usable or correct. we briefly had a library of alexandria and then fed it into a paper shredder so advertisers could sell a random mash of pulp back to us at a premium.

One of the many interesting things about JGY is his attitude towards the legacies of other characters. He wants his father's reputation trashed and he gets it, but I really don't think he cares that, say, NMJ and JZX are remembered positively.

I've said plenty on NMJ in the past, so I'll just note that he breaks the sworn brotherhood oath first, repeatedly tries to murder JGY, and dies killing a bunch of innocent bystanders. JGY has every reason to sabotage his posthumous reputation, an avenue via which he could do it, and chooses not to. In fact, JGY and LXC combined are the only reason the Nie remain technically one of the great clans. It would have been trivially easy for JGY to allow the Nie to lapse into obscurity, but he doesn't do it because—we can infer—he cares about NHS and about working with LXC and maintaining his own legacy of preservation and construction more than he cares about tearing down NMJ.

As for JZX, it's politically sensible for JGY to have his brother elevated in death to signal that he himself knows his place. But even if he's purely doing all this for the sake of expedience, we never get the impression he's secretly seething about having to do it. At the temple, all his rage and hatred is directed towards his father. He keeps the blame where it should be: on JGS and his behaviour, and not on JZX. I think most people with JGY's baggage would find it difficult to not at least partially blame their golden child sibling.

Once again we end up coming back to the fact that the framing of JGY by the text isn't supported by what he actually says and does, and he is in fact extraordinarily gracious in the circumstances. In a setting rife with extreme violence and excessive retribution carried out by basically the entire cast—including our main character!—JGY is in many ways quite restrained.

One of the weirdest thing about growing up suicidal is that you assume you have no future, you don’t even try to envision it because you see no point. So eventually, you start assuming everyone else sees nothing in your future either. Recently, my friend and I were talking and she said something about how at her wedding I could wear a suit or a dress as long as it matched her bridesmaid’s dresses because the butler of honor has to make a good impression. This hit me so hard because I had never realized before how other people thought about me. She said it so casually like it wasn’t even a hard decision, just a given fact. She loves me so much she saw me at her wedding, standing with her on one of the most important days of her life. And you know what? There are so many people who think about you that way. If that isn’t proof that you should keep going I don’t know what is.
