Hello! Someone genuinely trying to understand and perhaps unlearn some reactionary tendencies. With the response to that anon about "not asking if you're a pro or anti", the response about "imagine if they put this much effort into protecting real kids" definitely got me thinking. So... Is an adult shipping children and finding that hot NEVER a red flag? Or is it case by case on seeing how that person handles the distinction between fiction and reality in other things? And bringing the issue of real kids into it, if a real kid who has been abused sees someone shipping kids and finds that a red flag in that person, that... No, no I juicy answered my own question on that one. Block them and cultivate your own experience.

I will start by saying this right out of the gate: fundamentally, I do not really give a shit about what made up scenarios about fictional characters people are jorking it to in private. I am, first and foremost, interested in how they are interacting with actual, real people.

"but Makenzie are you saying people who look at sexually explicit images of real human kids should be allowed near children?" no I'm not. please note that I was specifically talking about people engaging with fictional characters who are, you know, not real and do not have feelings and therefore cannot actually be hurt, traumatized, abused, etc, in any way that actually matters. I want to be so clear about this: you can genuinely think whatever vile things you want about fictional characters. you can enjoy any problematic shit you want with little guys who don't actually exist.

like, here's an example I use a lot: I'm kind of a huge Batman fan. don't know if you could tell that or not, I'm pretty subtle about it. if you spend any time in the Batman mythos, you know that this is a story where you just kind of have to take for granted that our hero is a billionaire using his vast wealth to dispatch vigilante justice with military grade weaponry and a small army of child soldiers and cop friends to help him put people in prison. these are moral quandaries that are discussed and acknowledged within the story, but fundamentally the universe is always going to involve billionaire vigilantism and child soldiers and the so-called carceral justice system. that's just the price of admission if you're gonna read Batman.

and like. I spend a lot of time in that world. I love Batman, I love his child soldiers. he's my little blorbo or whatever. but like, at no point have I said "yeah, fuck it, preteens should be learning martial arts to fight domestic terrorists, actually. I think Elon Musk SHOULD be allowed to put on a fursuit and beat up criminals. cops need more funding." no amount of Batman comics can make me believe or act on any of those things because, you know, I'm a person with a brain and I know the difference between "thing that makes a good story" and "thing that should actually happen for real."

and the thing is that genuinely, honestly, if someone thought that it was a red flag that I like Batman, and that enjoying Batman comics was somehow a red flag indicating that I'm fine with violence being done against real, actual children? I would think that person was a nut, if I can be super real. like, I'm thinking about somebody trying to make the case that I shouldn't be allowed to hang out with my nephew because I enjoy the fictional character of Robin so clearly I'm going to kill my nephew's parents in front of him to try to get him into vigilante justice. or if someone attempted to bar me from teaching my 4th-6th grade sex ed classes on the grounds that I was obviously going to teach them to do karate to clowns instead of how their reproductive systems worked.

(although, lets be real, there are a lot of politicians who would MUCH rather let little kids cage fight each other than learn anything about safer sex.)

this doesn't just apply to morally bad things, either, btw. I also read a lot of romance novels, especially hetero romances. and the thing is, not one of those books has made me want to fall in love with a ruggedly handsome but condescending straight man. hell, none of them have made me want to fall in love with anybody, period. that's not really something I'm interested in for myself, it's just a fun and frequently funny dynamic to explore. I'm hardly the first queer person to point out that the allegations that queer media "turns kids gay/trans" is obviously bullshit since the vertible mountain of cishet media evidently failed to turn any of us straight/cis, you know?

my point being: no, I genuinely don't think it's often, if ever, reasonable to judge someone's actual, real life morals by how they interact with fiction.

I'm going to say something so vulnerable right now, because we're in a safe space here: since you asked me this very reasonable question, you evidently value my judgment and perspective at least a little bit. and I once read and thoroughly enjoyed a fic in which Dr. Horrible, from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, gets fucked by a sapient evil horse. and I don't think that makes me a morally reprehensible person, or a person who advocates for real human beings having real sex with real horses. I think it just makes me kind of a weirdo with a bullshit tolerance.

And oooh ok so I actually have some advice for that! I went through a massive art block where I didn't draw a single thing from 2019 up to 2022, like absolutely nothing

And I was able to get out of the art block by redrawing stuff! Like taking a screenshot from a movie I like and redrawing it in my style. I redrew like 10 screenshots from Disney movies until the inspiration started coming to me on its own

The nice thing about redrawing something that already exists is that you don't have to come up with a composition or an idea, since it's already there, so it let's you only focus on the art process

These were from early 2022, the last of the batch of the screenshots I redrew before I started drawing stuff out of my own head lol

And then later that year, I would still get stuck every once on a while, so redrawing screenshots it was until I got the inspiration back again lol

When I get stuck now, I usually redraw a meme or a screenshot, too, since it helps me warm up and get back into the creative process hehe like this thing I did when I was stuck some months ago

Redrawing trends or memes is also great for inspiration, since you don't have to think about poses or the idea itself, plus it's fun to imagine a character saying incorrect quotes, etc

As for coming up with ideas, the brainrot is always in my head lol so I listen to a song or watch a show and I'm constantly thinking "this is something x character would say/do" and I take notes about it and then use it as inspiration 🤭 it's all about seeing the blorbos everywhere

Anyway, I don't know if this is helpful advice or not, but it has helped me in more than one occasion!

Redrawing your own old art is also an old reliable trick to beat art block hehe

4. Who is your ultimate Asian ql blorbo?

i honestly missed when blorbo entered the internet lexicon, but my working definition is a character who must be protected at all costs. for a long time my Asian QL blorbo was gun from my school president—just a little guy who loves his friends and is doing his best. then a more mature blorbo appeared in the form of gene from lovely writer, who might be one of my favorite characters of all time. but just squeezing gene out for the top spot is another newcomer:

moo, my son, my lil ray of sunshine, a boy who loves with his whole soul, the beating heart of only boo.

12. Which Asian country’s bl do you want to watch more of?

i currently watch mostly thai (can't resist a buffet table), with occasional forays into japanese, korean, and taiwanese ql, but i have stylistic issues with all three, so it's not like i'm especially eager to dive deeper. i'm gonna actually say filipino for this one, since i haven't dipped my toes in at all! friends have told me how good gaya sa pelikula is and i've seen good things about marahuyo project around these parts.

16. If you could remake one Asian ql, which would it be and how would you change it?

the million dollar question lmao. as an editor and recovering film student, i mentally nitpick a lot of choices both on the storytelling side and on the technical side of things, but generally my brain considers those changes within the framework of what's already on the screen, rather than taking the position of completely remaking something. so i had to give this question some thought...

i keep going back to two series from last year that infuriated me: dangerous romance and hidden agenda. the former at least enjoyed a strong start, but couldn't sustain the grittier vibes that were promised by the title and promo material. however, i think hidden agenda needed to be taken apart at the seams and rebuilt. scenes dragged without any sort of blocking to add motion, conversations felt opaque, and backstories weren't introduced until it was almost too late for the audience to be truly invested. p'tee has a very distinct directing style, and i think it was a bit of a mismatch here (or he was sleepwalking in between his other projects), so honestly i would start there. golf sakon isn't perfect but he can handle a light-hearted campus drama just fine. carve out more screentime for AuBoom (and Pod, why not), flesh out the characters and their motivations earlier, get rid of that crazy beauty filter, and maybe include an actual hidden agenda? just some thoughts for free!

Yeah sure! This is in reference to this and this posts.

These are all pretty 'fic style' stories, because they scaffold off pre-existing canon. It's like you're walking inside of a pre-built house and you're putting up new wallpaper and designing the rooms. Novel style is like if you're building the entire house. So these are really great for fun and if you have writer's block or have problems starting a story. They're also really good if you're practicing your dialogue, scene composition, characterization, etc - they are not good for developing skills on how to build the house, but if you're trying to work on actually making a readable story they're great methods to practice. They're also a lot easier to make good lol.

While writing these out I realized that they're almost entirely AUs. This is because I like AUs. You don't have to do AUs, you can adapt these however you want if you just like writing canon. Loser. Anyway, these are my low-effort stories:

A series of disconnected scenes that take place over a long period of time. If you have an idea in mind (or you just want to use the OG work's timeline), then you can show scenes or moments over a long period in time. For example, ages ago I wrote an AU story following the life of one character. One scene for 2008, one for 2010, one for 2012 etc.

Rewriting canon. If you have an AU idea or have a way in mind to change canon to something you think fucks harder, then you can use pre-existing episodes or season plotlines and just add your own flavor to what already exists. If you write for BNHA you aren't allowed to do this. That's the rule. How is all BNHA fic 600k AUs where one extremely minor detail is changed. God they're boring.

Alternate viewpoint/missing scene of a story you have. Like you can do this for canon too but that sounds super boring. This is actually something I do in order to help the quality of the main story - if I'm finding myself writing a super complicated character, I write another story about him from his POV to help give me a handle on him. Or write her parts of the story from her perspective. It's a writing exercise to help me figure out the character and it is also easy and fun.

"X Meets Y". Do you really like Legally Blonde? Do you think your favorite character being Elle Woods would be really funny? Stuff like that. Would it be really funny if your blorbo was Sharpay Evans? Yes it would be. Yeah I DID write a story many years ago that was "X meets Teen Beach Movie", why?

I don't know how many other people out there have extremely convoluted entire AU ideas, but if you have the whole AU in your mind then it is incredibly easy to write little stories or snippets from the AU. Like, so easy. A stand-out scene in your mind, the life of one supporting character, an alternate POV, whatever. Literally whenever I want to write something absolutely 0 effort whatsoever I go back to one of my 3 bugfuck stupid AUs and write something for them again.

This is actually something I think everybody should do, because it is basically how I learned story structure: find the trashiest, most formulaic genre you can. Watch or read something from that genre, or just collect genre conventions. Use the pre-packaged and pre-written formula to structure your own story and fill in the blanks.

(Also, these aren't very tropey or reliant on shipping/romance beats, which is nice if you want to get away from that stuff)

Nowadays, I find all of that helpful when I feel like doing something 0 effort. When I was a less experienced writer and I deadass did not know how to build a house, then these were really helpful for learning what wallpaper looks good and what arrangement of furniture creates good fung shui and what couches go best with that coffee table. They're also good passing. Seriously, these are like the most popular stories on my AO3. People eat this shit up. Why. They're so lazy.

IDK, these are what I do because they're the kinds of stories I like to write! What you find easy to write will be different. This is all a very personal list. I can see my personal thumbprint (no romance, AU central) really clearly. I'm kind of curious now: what are y'all's favorite low-effort, easy, fun stories to write?

Also as a heads up if your story doesn't have any sort of conflict in it, then it will actually very difficult to write. Trust me. Conflict makes you voom. Do it. Please. Love of god.

Ted has developed a fear of the dark now.

Well. Not entirely

Just like the fear of noises or something might be watching him in the dark. Lord help him if he sees the reflection light of a Deer's eyes. He'll go ballistic.

A lot of this is because of how he was attacked by Moon, and pursued, and Moon sadistically beat him up, even so much as to taunt and play with him a little. And did cling onto the roof of his car, grabbing his throat while he peeled out of the parking garage.

He has difficulties walking home alone in the dark, but it's not like he'd admit he needs or wants someone to walk him home. Just due to his stubbornness, and his severe adamance that he doesn't have PTSD.

I think about writing more of the Dadler AU all the time, but I really haven't started the next chapter. But the next chapter is basically going to start like:

Dadler running to the Fazbear Apartments that is only a block away from the Megaplex.

My brain has been in a fog these last few days. I feel better talking to my therapist yesterday but my self-worth and overall mental health are still pretty low.

this is 5 months late, but i just wanted to let everyone know that quitting really was the best thing i've ever done. the sheer amount of relief i had at leaving an incredibly toxic working environment that was just filled with a lot of lateral violence and an abusive manager. i sometimes miss my coworkers and the clients, but how i felt 5 months ago, not just about my job but about life in general, is vastly different to how i feel today.

i found a wonderful job that i love, that i'm good at, and that has just embraced me whole-heartedly. it's supportive, the work is fulfilling, and my team of coworkers and management are all fantastic. it helps too that i got a $5 raise, which means that i can comfortably pay my bills, create a safety cushion, and send money to my sister who has been dealing with a lot of medical issues.

my head is clearer and i'm feeling so, so good about the transition. it was scary as hell to walk away from a job i'd been doing for 4.5 years but it was so worth it and i'm so grateful that i did.

i've been on tumblr for like a decade or so now, and for the most part that's been a good experience. i stick to my fandoms and my mutuals and i write my fic. every once in a while, discourse wanders my way and i get to decide to engage or not. i have no interest in engaging currently. the very idea of arguing with people over something we either love or hate in opposing fashion sounds and is exhausting. so, i fully invite anyone who just doesn't like or agree with me to block me. it doesn't have to be deep. we like/think/want/feel different things and there's this nifty option to never see/hear from each other again that can only improve both of our lives. so like... do that. ✌️

Honestly it's super annoying to see people get pissed that Sun and Moon may combine if the poll ties. Like yes, the poll should've probably just had them as one character from the get go since we have a hard time picking between the 2 and they're one body anyway. But like, the person running that didn't really think of that? So combining them was a fun compromise/reward for accomplishing a difficult challenge like tying a poll and they shouldn't be getting shit bc other people's faves aren't winning like. Ugh.

Also! The poll is just for fun? Getting butthurt that the some characters are more popular than other characters is so fucking childish like. Dude we are voting on fictional robots. I'm sorry yours didn't win but like. Get over it. Make your own poll idc.

Especially since it's likely they'd win regardless of if one or both moved on just bc the dca fandom is really big rn since the game came out recently and a lot of us latched on to them. So acting like they're "teaming up" and will "definitely win now" is such a weak argument when it's very apparent that most people who like one dca like both. I mean Moon is a bit more popular but there's no way that Moon beats Puppet/Springtrap but Sun doesn't yknow?

Specifically there was one person that pissed me off by going on about how the puppet protects children and the dca kidnaps and kills them and called it like, hypocritical or something? And honestly fuck off. The dca cares about kids they're just controlled by Afton. Same reason the other glamrocks go haywire. Same reason every other animatronic in the game goes haywire tbh. The puppet murders people too, even if it's not children. Every robot in this series is a murderer so trying to take a moral high ground about that is dumb.

I dunno, just really got my hackles up. But it's pretty clear they were just lashing out bc they're salty their emotional support robot was gonna lose to my emotional support robots and I can understand being attached to characters. I just think bitching at the poll creator and whining in the tags is being a poor sport and an ass.

If you go looking for who I'm talking about don't fucking bother them, fictional robots aren't worth starting actual drama over. I blocked em bc I don't want to see them bitch about my blorbos and that should be the end of it.

Tea Knight Cookie too maybe, fighting giant monsters is supposedly his thing. Even Knight Cookie might stand a chance if the circumstances are really good, I mean, he canonically defeated a dragon... I feel like people forget that a lot. He's a lot stronger than he seems.

With a lot of luck and good circumstances, I think offensive magic cookies can all have a small chance against a human (Espresso, Latte, Wizard... Yes Wizard Cookie. A lightning to your face is still a lightning to your face, you know?)

I definitely think Dark Choco Cookie and Twizzly Gummy Cookie can kill someone too. I'd say Rye too, but I'm not sure how powerful her bullets are, by human standards... I mean, surely they're not like actual gun bullets to us, so... (Same goes for Caramel Arrow)

I also think destructive cookies like Purple Yam Cookie and Mala Sauce Cookie have about the same strength as a raccoon with rabies, which CAN kill someone if you're not careful.

Ah, with the cake army behind him, I'd be really scared of Red Velvet Cookie too... Like really scared. Whenever I watch the story of Dark Enchantress Cookie, I think to myself "holy shit those witches got mauled to death by cake monsters". Or Dark Enchantress burned them alive? I can't remember, either way, it was pretty metal and I loved it.

I don't think Affogato or pomegranate can kill someone, but... I'd still be extremely anxious around them. Affogato could be sly enough to poison someone's drink, and Pomegranate might try to "corrupt" a human to turn them into a weapon.

Also honorable mention (because he's my blorbo) but I think Milk Cookie's magic shield can block a punch/kick/stomp from a human. He definitely can't defeat a human, but I'm just saying I don't think a human could hurt him, at least not easily. Same goes for Madeleine maybe I guess but he's not my blorbo so I don't care.

anyway. Like, shit-tons of people have articulated this better than I'm about to, but yeah I'll give it a shot

When people, particularly queer people (like me) talk about censorship of fandom spaces inevitably leading to the purging of queer content, we're not pulling that concern out of our asses. It has happened Over and Over and Over and Over and Over again. It happened with fanfiction.net, with livejournal, with old-ass email lists and dinky web.1 sites and email lists made by tiny groups of people, it happened with tumblr, it even happened with youtube (the demonetization and soft-blocking of queer content, and when creators tried to appeal, they were told that their content was unsuitable for children (HMMMMMM))

There is a huge amount of historical precedent off of which to base the fear of censorship leading to the purging of queer content.

We're gonna put aside the dead horses of 'just because you write about something doesn't mean you endorse it in real life' and 'fiction =/= reality' (because I think those both often lack nuance when brought up in this conversation, and overlook some very real exceptions). Alright? We're not gonna beat those horses at all. Put them out of your mind.

I agree with you that real children having porn written about them is completely vile (honestly I hate rpf in general, but in the case of children it's especially reprehensible). I wouldn’t be sad at all to see underage fics be purged from AO3, honestly, if I thought there was a way to do that without it inevitably leading to queer content and queer creators being obliterated from the site. Which I don't, currently, because it's literally never been done.

The thing about associating queer content with csam (and pushing the 'vintage homophobia') is that QUEER PEOPLE AREN'T DOING IT. I keep seeing this come up like it's some blazing hot big-brain take, but it's just, incredibly fucking insulting. Knock it the fuck off with this asinine assertion that queer people are victimizing ourselves and bringing this association on of our own volition.

Take a look at any conservative twitter account (particularly conservative politicians) and count how many times they call queer folks (particularly trans folks, and especially trans women) 'groomers'. It's literally like, their big hot button issue right now, calling queer people pedophiles and groomers, and attempting to get legislation introduced which categorizes us as such

WE ARE NOT FUCKING DOING THIS. THEY ARE.

Okay so let's go on a little hypothetical journey, yeah?

You censor underage fics. Okay cool! What does that mean? Where's the line? What constitutes a child? Under eighteen? Under sixteen? The brain doesn't really stop developing until around twenty-five, so should that be considered the line? Is it still objectionable if both characters are underage? If both characters are, say, fifteen, and this fic was written by some horny fifteen-year-old who, whilst trying to figure out their own sexuality, just wanted to write about their blorbos fooling around, should that be purged?

When I was a teenager, I wrote about teenage girls being ravished by older men, because I myself was attracted to older men. Should I have been punished for that? Should my content have been deleted? It never felt like some mortal sin I should have to atone for; it was fantasy fulfillment through the safe space of fucking fanfiction.

If other teens do that, and post their fics online (because teenagers do indeed have a right to post their mature fics online if they want to), should they be required to divulge private information about themselves to justify their content existing? Should readers be required to divulge private information to verify their own teenagerhood before reading the fics, to prevent intergenerational cross-contamination? What if they lie? How would that be enforced? Is that even ethical, to force people to divulge actual, real life private information like that for the sake of keeping a fandom space 'morally pure'?

Moving on from that, let's say we somehow figure out how to purge only the truly morally bad and gross fics (which, to be sure, some of them are obvious and easy). Well, okay, but maybe while we're at it, we should go ahead and purge [insert additional objectionable content of your choosing here], because it also has no place in polite society.

And again, how do we draw that line? We could have that above back-and-forth conversation for every single morally objectionable category on AO3, and you will never find a solution that doesn't catch innocent people in the crossfire, nor will you ever find a solution that doesn't lead to further descent down the slippery slope of censorship

When conservatives (and yes, censorship is almost always inherently conservative) get a foot in the door of power, they do not stop. They might start with purging the obviously nasty and gross fics, but they will take it farther (and we know they will because again, this has already happened Over and Over and Over and Over). Queer content will inevitably, invariably, always be on the chopping block when censorship comes into play, because to conservatives, queer people are pedophiles just, inherently -- and thus our content is automatically categorized as csam or grooming material.

Sometimes the slippery slope is real. And there's heaps of historical and cultural precedent for this one in particular.

So like. I'm really solely concerned with queer content being purged, because I've literally watched it happen before, and I care more about queer rights, and queer content, and queer people in general, than I care about the murky morality of writing questionable fanfiction (which are, y'know, as a sidenote, nearly always appropriately tagged and warned for so as to be easily avoidable; the dead dove tag trend is a gift, actually)

AND..... this is all putting aside the fact that AO3 was never meant to be a moderated space in the first place. It's literally just an ARCHIVE, it's right there in the name. It has no morals of its own, nor any responsibility to bear such. It's like throwing your fic into a remarkably well-organized warehouse (perhaps, with bookshelves, and some sort of.... system to find what you want; I feel like we might have a name for these spaces in real life? but idk) and then peacing out.

There's not much fanfiction for KN8 rn (at least not much I know about), so i looked forward to it and like a quarter in the fic I started taking notes on what to comment because OMG THERE'S SO MUCH ABOUT THIS I HAVE TO SAY!! so...*adjusts non existing glasses* shall we proceed then?

How do I deserve, I asked you gifting me this much of my OTP!?!! T_T yess. just yess ok? I'll take them as a canon ship in your FFs ANYTIME like that!!

Hoshina to crash the party and pick them up (and beat the shit out of Narumi, only to end up at a McDonalds parking lot doing stupid drunk gang squad stuff) but I'm not one for a writer myself, (also english is not my first language, if thats not obvious) so there's that idea of mine spilled out very poorly onto the world, ur welcome xD

ANYWAY - this was such a delight to read - it was fun it was very well written. I AM REPEATING MYSELF, WHO CARES. I loved how you ...describe stuff/surroundings/happenings? XD It didn't get boring and you had a well done red thread around everything. Only thing a bit out of character was Kafkas carelessness for his employment, although that's very clearly just something you need to implement, to get the rest of the plot the way you need it to turn out, so nothing done wrong there as well :)

first impression: yk whats funny is i actually wasnt a scott main yet when s1 started, i’ve been watching lizzie since 2015 and having watched crazy craft i knew who he was, but not much of anything of what he’d been up to besides knowing mcc was a thing. i think my first proper introduction that i can think of was lizzie’s episode with deal with destiny.

favorite headcanon: more or less inspired by and based on the one two birds animatic with him and xornoth, but i love the idea of scott when he was younger growing out his hair to match xornoth because he idolized his brother and thought he was so cool... only for xornoth’s betrayal to happen and scott being quickly crowned ruler of rivendell instead and racing to chop his hair off to avoid the association. but in addition to that i also like the idea that leading into/during his snowy exile he starts growing out his hair again, not caring about what people think of him in that regard anymore.
