People should get reimbursed for commute time
If it takes someone over an hour to get to work, that should be part of their pay.
Many people have to commute long distances/through areas of slow traffic because they cannot afford to live closer to their workplace. This is also why work from home is a big thing.
If corporations want people to return to their offices, they need to make it appealing enough. I'm not going to fight through traffic for 2 hrs in my free time just to sit at a computer all day, when I could just stay home and don't waste that time.
Corporations would be forced to invest in local affordable housing, perhaps even affording housing credits. They would need to invest in local infrastructure (which in the US is falling to pieces) and improve public transport in their area (faster commute -> less cost to the company, less cars on road -> traffic moves faster, employees without cars would still be able to get to work). Also people would be less stressed and actually take the time to drive safely because they wouldn't feel the need to rush. It would make companies actually take an interest in how their workers get to work and investing in local communities.
I live sort of near DC. We have a HUGE amount of workers commuting into the city and its surrounding cities. Retail workers also have to commute to these cities and suburbs because they cannot afford to live in those areas. My boyfriend commutes an hour to his part time job at a kennel in a rich town. A lot of people live in the more affordable, lower income, far away areas in the nearby states because housing prices in my area are fucking insane. I knew someone who commuted 2+ hours to work and 2+ hours back. There are people who drive even more than that.
And where do these employees have to live? Food deserts. Crumbling infastructure. No parks, no walkability, no public transport, bare bones everything. Only the cities which only the few can afford have basic infrastructure. And even the people living there have to commute to OTHER even richer areas. There's a ton of places where housing developments have just been shoved and are surrounded by nothing but farms. There's nothing local to do, so everyone goes to the closest town and city. It's also why you see a lot of older towns have abandoned main streets. Why have your business cater to the 100 people who live there when you can be in a city with thousands?
There has been some recent interest in paid commute times. 1 2 especially with corporations trying to get workers to go back to the office. Personally, I love working in my office because having a separate space outside my home helps me keep work and home separate and allows me to focus easier since I'm not in "home mode". I don't have room for an office in my parents house so working from home kinda sucks rn even though it would help a lot since I'm disabled. But it is nice being physically near my coworkers, even if it gets annoying sometimes. Also many jobs involve fieldwork (like mine!) which can't be done remotely anyway!
There would be incentive for corporations to keep their employees close AND provide more remote work options for those living farther away. As well as matching pay to fit rent/housing prices in the area (or vice versa).
Also there needs to be something done about corporations having their entire workforce sourced from another country entirely, working for pennies. But that's an even more complicated situation that I don't have experience in.

i realize how little i have in common with my peers simply because im not constantly on tik tok/instagram/facebook 👴
#first i just dont get 80% of the references bc i simply dont engage with them/im not curious enough about them#second new people or those that i know cant go 15 minutes without scrolling on their phone or texting#the few friends who would let me stay at their house would always sit on their phone the entire evening not really engaging with me#or trying to engage with me by showing me something they found on their phone.... girl-#i broke up with my last partner bc they were chronically online and wouldnt go to sleep without at least 1 hour of phone time in bed#im mainly complaining about the bed time phone usage thing bc it used to drive me crazy as an insomniac#and considering how many people do it just makes me completely disinterested in sharing a bedroom with other people#i am old so that must be it tho#i barely use my phone that thing can last 4 days on one battery charge (it's a good battery but still) despite my occasional yt usage#i like in person talking and i just think people lost touch with their social side the last few years :(#and it's hard for me to feel like im having an engaging conversation with someone if they're constantly checking their phone#it makes me feel really lowly of myself it hits my self-esteem hard bc this behavior shows me im too boring to have their attention#even tho they were the one to invite me over/go out with me... bro.#personal#delete later

it still boggles my mind that if I had applied solo for this mortgage I would've been rejected, even though I have good credit & stuff. I could "afford" a $1700 apartment smacking of landlord special & mold & a giant fucking hole in my ceiling they never fixed & two broken kitchen lights they never fixed & a balloon of paint in a different spot on the ceiling that was full of water because the apartment was water damaged n run down anyway before I moved in but I apparently couldn't afford a $560 mortgage payment for a decent, kinda old ish house but clean & not hazardous. okay silly ass
#it drives me crazy bc my aunt's credit is absolute garbage but if i hadn't applied with her i 100% would've been rejected#but like those living conditions are what everyone is stuck with if they aren't lucky enough to have someone who can be on a mortgage#with them#there are literally thousands of empty houses in youngstown alone that could be part of a solution to housing#but no the citys brilliant idea is to just one by one rip them all down & let people be stuck in shithole apartments#amazing planning incredible use of resources#like i just made my first mortgage payment & am just sitting here like holy shit i have so much money left over???#i can afford groceries & the rest of my utilities w/out anxiety everyone under age 30 is being robbed blind#once again thats 560 for an ENTIRE HOUSE not a small broom closet apartment a home with three bedrooms a finished basement & a sunroom#like it is absolutely INSANE that so many ppl are just straight up barred from accessing this its absolutely criminal#its an irrefutable act of violence to force ppl to live in squalor or with nothing at all when they could easily have safe housing#BECAUSE THE HOUSES ARE JUST SITTING THERE

How just how does anyone do the required edits for publishing an article without smashing their computer into tiny little pieces??????????? The stupid, pointless haggling over every single word, all to make maybe a fraction of a percentage point of difference in the ultimate quality of the article, and often not even clearly making it better at all but arguably worse — what a colossal waste of time!!!! My time, the editor's time, everyone's time!!! It is so frustrating and maddening and so so so so much work!!! When we all have so many better things to do!!! In the days I've now spent arguing over swapping my "remarkably"s for "notably"s — what could I have achieved instead with all that time and energy?!??
#apologies for the rant but this is driving me crazy#this is at the copy editing stage fyi#so i have already done SEVERAL ROUNDS OF SUBSTANTIAL REVISIONS#been working on this paper since spring 2020!!!!#i think i just got unlucky with an unusually involved copy editor#she made 150 changes in 30 pages#and maybe 10% of those are actual copy edits?#the rest are requests for substantial content changes#which i am just not willing to do anymore at this stage#like no i will not explain the history of sentimentalism just bc i mention it in a subsentence#let it go!!#FOUR other people have already reviewed it!!!#LET IT GO

my right eyebrow has been twitching randomly for the past two days and I found out (1 second of googling) that it could be from fatigue and here I am at 1:45am again
#what is wrong with me#I had to work 5 days in a row (I know normal people do that all the time but I don’t I’m in retail!!!!)#then I had christmas day off which was not a relaxing or reenergizing day off bc I had to go places and be with my bfs family#and now I’m working 5 more days#then I get 3 days off which is nice but then I work 6 days after that#I feel kind of fucking crazy and I still have 3 more days to go#I’ve also had to help give someone in my store rides to work like the past two-ish weeks#and I did not realize how important those 30 minute car rides were to me until#I need that time to get ready for a day of work and help me decompress after work#I feel like such an asshole but it’s been driving me crazy having someone ride with me all the time#I need that time to sing really loud and also scream really loud when I need to 😭

FINALLY starting to feel a little better about christmas though i only have two things on me and one thing ordered BUT i got a list of books from my mom so i can order those when i order the cookbook for my sister in law and my mom also mentioned something my sister wants that i could get, gonna do most of the kids' shopping on friday, still need ideas for my nephew and godson though, plus i have general ideas for my dad and brother lol you guys are getting gift cards and a little something else bc you are too difficult for me to shop for ANYWAY like i am going to make progress in the coming days so it's fine
