Ghost Flower by the Astral Swan

At the Stellar Fishing Ground lives a Piecey who loves the Astral Swan. Watching the Astral Swan glide by made his worries disappear. But as he gazed at the low-flying Astral Swan, he sensed its loneliness. To cheer it up, he consulted many sprites and read numerous books until he discovered that a young Wish Collector from Stoneville had once folded a giant flying paper crane that delighted the Astral Swan when it flew around it. Sadly, the Wish Collector never returned. The Piecey realized that the Astral Swan would soar when accompanied. He waited and waited but never saw the person or spirit the Astral Swan would recognize. He then grew old, maybe never to see the scene he longed for.

One day, a pink-haired stylist appeared, gently cleaning the Astral Swan's feathers. The Swan instantly took a liking to this Whimsey-filled human and invited her to fly together. Witnessing this marvel, the Piecey closed his eyes peacefully, his spirit becoming an unseen flower drifting into the sky. At last, he could forever soar alongside the Astral Swan, never lonely again.

I am finally home after another busy few days in the Portland area. Thursday I got up SUPER early to make it to Scappoose by 10 for my PCC birdwatching excursion. As always, the east end of the Crown-Zellerbach Trail is a superb place for birds, and we were lucky enough to see plenty of migrating sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis), among many others. Then that evening it was over to the Cascade Park Library in Vancouver (WA, not BC) for my introductory mushroom foraging class, which was very well attended.

I had Friday off, which was much-needed. So after sleeping way later than anticipated, I headed over to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge for a nice ramble. The highlight of my day was FINALLY getting to see a pair of Pacific mink (Neogale vison energumenos) in the wild! They were having a blast leaping around on semi-submerged trees and swimming in the shallows.

Then yesterday was my Introduction to Mycology with Wildcraft Studio School. This is where I get to go in-depth about how cool fungi are, their biology and ecological roles, and other good stuff. I do get into mushroom identification, but we aren't just focused on edible species (though we did find a few of those, along with a western destroying angel (Amanita ocreata). I was super excited to uncover a couple of slime molds, too--honeycomb coral slime mold (Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa), which I've encountered before, and a new-to-me species, yellow carnival candy slime mold (Arcyria obvelata).

Today is a Writing Day (TM). My goal is to have my first set of deliverables for The Everyday Naturalist done and sent in to my editor by end of day, and then I can buckle down on the whole rest of the manuscript. Wish me luck!

For Spider- Along Came A Spider by Czesław Śpiewa ! Not just because it has spider in the title I promise /silly. I think the descent of calm, gentle music into increasingly aggressive sounding lyrics and melodies is very much the kind of hubris that lady would experience tbh... also the way the singer delivers "Knock, Knock, please let us in / It's cold out here, too cold to sin" reminds me a lot of the Vibes (tm) this character has in general :3

I Have Always Loved The Door is my Mianmian/Wen Qing fic about reconciling with your past, growing into yourself, and also Swords. Here’s director’s commentary on the last third of the fic, chapters 11-15!

just realized we referred to jgy as meng yao??? probably because this is around when i started writing Falling in Love with Love (Again) which takes place b4 sunshot

however i will say that nmj calls him meng yao bc he’s being petty

ah yes the next jgy scene!!! i struggled with how to write his thinly veiled threat so it was clear it was a threat while also being perfectly innocuous. I think i managed here

honestly in this universe jin guangyao is going to try to murder wen qing and mianmian is gonna have to spend so much time protecting her.
