You find Alessia on the sofa, her face illuminated by the blue glow of her phone screen. At first, you think she’s watching one of those oddly specific TikToks she loves—something about cats playing table tennis or an American teenager ranking their favourite crisps. But then you notice the furrow in her brow, the way her teeth tug at her bottom lip. Her expression is equal parts confusion, disbelief, and mild offence.

“Everything alright?” you ask, setting your keys on the counter.

She doesn’t answer immediately, which is a bad sign. Alessia always greets you the moment you walk through the door, even if it’s just to ask what you’ve brought for dinner. Instead, she tilts the phone slightly so you can see the screen.

“Do you know about this?” she asks, voice clipped.

You lean over, squinting at the screen. The webpage is clunky, its layout straight out of 2012, and the title reads something absurd like ‘Sunlit Smiles and Shadowed Hearts’. Your name is prominently featured in the summary, alongside a few other recognisable ones.

“It’s fanfiction,” she says, answering the question you haven’t asked yet. “About you”

You blink. “About me?”

“And other people,” she adds, her tone sharp now, like the edge of a too-clean knife.

The penny drops. “Wait—what?”

She sits up straighter, turning the phone to face you fully. “Look. This one has you with… God, Tooney. And this one—oh, this is just brilliant—you’re married to Ona. Married! Like we’re just some passing fling”

You bite the inside of your cheek to keep from laughing, which, given her expression, would be a tactical error. Alessia doesn’t do jealousy often, but when she does, it’s like an overdramatic romcom villain plotting their revenge.

“Well,” you say carefully, “at least they’ve got good taste?”

“Good taste?” she repeats, incredulous. “One of these has you sneaking off with Mary behind my back during a post-match interview!”

“Creative, though,” you offer.

She glares at you, tossing the phone onto the cushion beside her. “This isn’t funny”

“It’s a little funny,” you say, sitting down next to her.

“It’s not,” she insists, crossing her arms. “Do you know how many of these there are? And how many don’t have me in them at all? Like I’m just some side character in your life?”

You try to suppress the grin tugging at your lips, but it’s no use. “Less, you do realise this is all made up, right? None of it’s real”

She huffs, her cheeks pink now. “I know that. But still. It’s insulting”

You reach for her hand, gently uncrossing her arms. “Alright, let’s look at it this way. I’m obviously very popular. Isn’t that a good thing?”

“Not when you’re popular with everyone except me”

“Oh, come on,” you tease, squeezing her hand. “I’m pretty sure there’s stuff about us too. The fluffy, romantic, borderline inappropriate kind”

Alessia hesitates, her gaze flicking to the phone. “You think so?”

“I know so,” you say confidently. “Because we’re the superior couple. Clearly”

That earns a small smile, though she tries to hide it. “You’re an idiot”

“And yet, here I am, fully committed to proving my devotion,” you say, reaching for her phone. You type in a search, scrolling through pages until you find what you’re looking for. “See? Right here. This one’s about us”

She leans over, peering at the screen. Her eyes scan the words, and slowly, her frown starts to fade.

“This is… cute,” she admits reluctantly.

“Exactly,” you say, draping an arm around her shoulders. “So, no more being jealous of fictional versions of me, okay? They don’t get to go home with you. I do”

She turns to look at you, her expression softening further. “Fine. But I’m still not over the Mary thing”

You laugh, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Noted. I’ll make it up to you”

“You better,” she mumbles, but there’s no real bite to her words anymore.

It’s only later, as you’re cooking dinner together, that you catch her sneaking glances at her phone again, her lips twitching with the beginnings of a smile. If she’s reading more of those stories, you don’t mention it. Some battles are better left unpicked.

That made me wonder. We already know what they'd tell MC on their choice of partner/s from a different ask. But would any of the siblings give ROs a "shovel talk" of sorts? Would it differ with each RO/poly? And i mean way before the wedding.

I feel like Farah could give the most scathing shovel talks (fuelled by Ember maybe lmao, or by the fiesty bluntness some of the kids and teens have), even if they're not scary in the traditional "shovel" talk sense.

Considering my MCs fate I think they might need a shovel talk about themself too... (Yes, Its Aurynn and L. Both.) (Gods help them, they did NOT choose this !!).

Parim wouldn’t give anyone a shovel talk—he’ll behave according to social protocol, but despite his polite and dignified outward demeanor, he is still quite sharp and discerning and will be appraising MC’s partner(s) to make his own judgements of them. He’d come around to all the ROs eventually—mostly he just wants to confirm that they make MC happy and that they clearly love/trust each other—thus he’d study their interactions with MC, but he’d keep his cards close to his chest on his actual feelings about each RO, but once he’s determined he trusts them, he’ll warm up around them.

Aurora would also not give someone a shovel talk—at least never so directly. Any threats she makes will be veiled in nature—phrased in such a way as to sound like a normal exchange to any outsiders, but the underlying threat will be quite evident to the specific person she’s talking to. She’d probably be more cautious around Aurynn, L, and Kieran based on reputations/first impressions. She’d grow to like all of the ROs though.

Castor would be much the same as Parim—he’ll behave strictly according to the standards of social etiquette, but he’ll be appraising the ROs. If he felt he didn’t trust one of them though, he’d simply feign ignorance when Ember corners them to give them a shovel talk and not reign them in. He’d be distant with the Celestylian ROs at first bc they are strangers, and with Samira and Aurynn he would still maintain some skepticism based on both their reputations and bc he doesn’t know them as well as MC yet. But like Parim, he likely wouldn’t tell someone to their face his opinion of them unless he felt the situation warranted a blunt approach. He will quietly observe before taking action.

Ember’s shovel talks are about as subtle as a brick to the face. They’d likely threaten all the ROs except Samira and Nihm—but not for lack of trying, at least in regards to Nihm. Nihm would just respond very kindly to Ember’s attempts at threats/gilling them until Ember feels uncomfortable, like he’s the one being put on the spot. :/ But everyone else will be getting the I’ll-feed-you-in-pieces-to-the-crocodiles-and-use-the-scraps-as-fish-bait talk. :)

Nour wouldn’t give a shovel talk bc they’ll make an effort to be kind and welcoming to MC’s partner(s) and get to know them in their own right before making any major criticisms or judgements. They’d trust that if MC chose them, it was for a reason and they’d try to find that reason. :)

Farah probably wouldn’t give a shovel talk unless directly under Ember’s influence (which would more be along the lines of “my brother will kill you” rather than “I’ll kill you”). She’d be more the type to give her shovel talk through actions: silently glaring, making threatening gestures, replacing the tea in MC’s and their partner(s)’s teapot with toad eggs, making a doll that looks suspiciously like the RO and very deliberately stabbing it with needles within ROs eyesight etc. She wouldn’t do that to Samira as Farah likes/trusts her, but would with Aurynn—not bc she doesn’t trust him but her relationship with him is like annoying sibling energy (and he is a thot soooo)—and the other ROs at least at first until she finally starts to open up to them (but she can be stubborn around strangers).

(Also my sincerest condolences to any MC on the Aurynn/L poly 🙏💐 😭 good luck you will need it—those two are complete fucking menaces in each other’s company 🤦‍♂️)

Also here to ramble abt this incredibly stupid au I made its called "the Spectre, the Spawn, and the Savior" its basically just. A kinda dumb take on the two gods we got in game plus a third one. And half of it is pre-forsaken!

Concept is that all three of them were once mortals! However through a series of events, they all ended up dying one way or another. Thus, they become gods. For some reason. Fate or smth? Also they all died as teens, they're all like 14-16 years old

So now the admins(who are all gods in a way) have these three teens who have no clue how to deal with their newfound godhood and could possibly be dangerous if left alone

So they draw straws on who has to make sure they don't kill people on accident. Telamon/Shedletsky ends up assigned to make sure these dumbasses don't screw up.

Poor guy just gets three traumatized(from pre-dying and their deaths) teen-gods and is so unsure of what he's supposed to do. Ends up found family, somehow. Telamon gets attached to his dumbass teens

The Spectre is very much kinda Insane. He's enjoying the suffering like a TV show and is purposely not showing up in person despite not wanting to bc Shedletsky is there and xe Does Not want to face him. The Spectre is the middle child and is being consistently bothered by the Spawn because technically it's the Spawn making sure the survivors keep coming back.

The Spawn is the youngest and is surprisingly chill for a god with a cult. Honestly they don't really care much for most of the cult, because it kinda got out of hand from what they intended. It does like Two Time(and it would like it's cultist back, goddammit Spectre you cant just kidnap a guys cultist), specifically because of what it calls "the angst". The Spawn also likes 007n7(he reminds it of it's dad before they died)

The Savior is the oldest and also my original one. She would like her siblings to stop what they're doing. She's the least insane of the three, and spends a lot of her time mourning the lover she had before she died. She does occasionally pop in to remind the Spectre that mortals need to eat food and drink water to live but she can't do much against him.

1x1x1x1 knows about them and doesn't like them very much, she thinks they're annoying.

Shedletsky is dealing with both his creation and his son being their tormentors. He's not doing ok send help

i do not rlly care for sylus so this is not me being sylus biased lol. i can def see this happening but i do think he's probably the LI with the most like... idgaf attitude about replacing caleb in a really particular way. he's not hung up that you're obsessive over that guy in the same way other LIs are. all the romances happen in diff timelines as stated as infold - but in this instance, your attachment to caleb does not Deter sylus to be like defeated even seeing how sorry and sopping wet and pathetic you get about your gege.

i think this is particularly because sylus has had a lot of time to process things. its part of the reason he can be so level with mc on the surface despite holding such intense feelings. he's really considered you so deeply i dont think it matters.

that being said - while sylus is absolutely a loverboy like. to end all loverboys - i do think a small part of him is delighted by how embarassed you are. more specifically because you wouldn't be this ashamed if you didn't like it, would you?

Anyways I thought it'd be fun to tackle being trans specifically set in early konoha, and all take a fun little peek at all the world building aspects I could possibly dig into with it!

I have an older post still buried in my drafts about my takes on how it's interesting to think ab how Konoha developing as a village might have impacted the trans experience of its shinobi and civillians— specifically from the standpoint of paperwork.

Thinking something along the lines of, earlier konoha had more unregistered home births and messy paperwork that also made it very easy to go in and change details of by simply going to an office and saying "Hey btw my mom filled out this form wrong when I was born. I'm a girl just so u know." And you'll just kinda get a shrug and a "oh ok cool, I'll change that then"

Vs more modern Konoha where you might get some more complicated loops to jump through and extra paperwork stating specifically that you are trans and would like to Officially Request (tm) a change in the presenting gender listed on your file and also would you like to sign up for our hormone therapy or any gender affirming surgery?

Just like. Thinking ab the little things and progression and changes through time (none specifically good or bad) at how things are done depending on the state of the village. Fun to think about

Like, Ichigo goes to the Orochi who are rather infamously gender apathetic and kinda just do their own thing as part of their clan culture.

The Inuzuka come in w their matriarchal clan to talk ab the concept of womanhood or smthn quirky like that, I'm not too sure yet but I think it'd be neat if they were there

Just. Having fun exploring the ways different clans and their cultures view and interact with gender. Some clans are welcome to the concept of trans people, some clans legit just don't care, some clans have trans ideas built into their identity, others might think it a bit strange but ultimately not their buisness, etc.

Then also the differences between how shinobi clans treat gender and transness vs how civilians treat it (w the shinobi caring a whole lot less ab it all. Probably bc they have other things to worry about)

Early Konoha is already so ripe w potential as a melting pot of cultures meeting for the first time ever ,,, I wanna play with it.

with all the things i rambled about just now, i think they're bound to at least be intrigued by each other. but. ok ok, ill admit, i DO think they're inherently unhealthy. honestly same with any SM ship, and most including TK. these 2 aren't even close to normal or stable on their own, god forbid they're left alone in the same room together for even a second bc even idk what they'd do and im their self-proclaimed ceo.

but i can see TK looking down on SM/thinking she's better than him because he isn't capable of even half the things she's able to do w/ time, and essentially playing with him whenever she's given the opportunity to interact with him. engaging with SM solely for her own entertainment. challenging him to board games just to cheat her way to victory over and over again, watching him slowly go from being impressed with her to infuriated realizing it is LITERALLY impossible to win against her.

TK enjoys all the reactions she's able to get out of SM, and strives to get more, to crack new ones out of him. she decides she likes the show he puts on just for her, and decides she wants to see just how it will play out. no because she genuinely likes him of course. no, no, its allll for the entertainment. being able to watch him cling to such petty wants like the company she gives him even in her mild torment, or the occasional praise, and how he hides his disappointment and hurt on the days she opts not to show herself to him under his bravado. its fun watching a fallen god scramble for her attention in the way that he does, especially since that attention is often in the form of mockery/tricks/threats. its fun. Hi! Over the last year or so I've been working on a sort of essay about various themes in the raven cycle series, and I finally finished it a few weeks ago.

1. Introduction

So here’s the thing: I love fiction almost as much as I love my friends. There’s something deeply comforting about the escapism, even if the book actually makes me want to scream and throw it on the floor (only one book has been thrown so far, I promise!).  Fiction is a healthy thing to occupy my thoughts with: headcanons! Quotes being on loop in my brain! Just fandoms!

And for me, if I am hooked on a book (series), it does not even need a good plot where a lot of things happen. In fact, I would say that my enjoyment of a book is made up of 30% plot and about 70% characters and vibes. If the characters are bland, if they do not make me feel much emotion, it likely won’t be more than 4 stars (additional info: I am way too nice rating books!). I really, really need to love the characters, to be able to relate to some aspects of them, or it just won’t become an obsession.

Since I have already started explaining that a bit, let’s look at this question: What is important to make a book special to me? 1. I need to cry reading it. 2. I have to think about it often, even weeks to months after having read it. 3. Obviously, I need to love the characters. 4. I need to be in the fandom! This can be hard with some books, but the internet is a whimsical space allowing you to find at least a small number of people who are obsessed with a work of fiction to a similar extent as you are.

Now, why am I elaborating on this so much? It’s because The Raven Cycle did all that for me. It is my favorite comfort book series at the moment, for all those aspects mentioned, but of course I cannot just leave it at that. No, I wrote a whole-ass analysis on headcanons and some of its themes. You’re welcome.

2. What even is The Raven Cycle?

The Raven Cycle is all I adore and live for (next to my friends). So, naturally, it’s a book series, specifically a four book young adult contemporary fantasy series by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The books in question are: The Raven Boys (2012), The Dream Thieves (2013), Blue Lily, Lily Blue (2014) and The Raven King (2016), and yes I will admit that the publishing dates are a bit of a red flag. There is also the very relevant follow-up series called The Dreamer Trilogy (Call Down The Hawk, Mister Impossible, Greywaren), but it’s a lot less easy to get into that here as I do not know these entire books by heart, so I’ll stick to the original tetralogy here.

To stick to red flags, the books are set in the fictional Henrietta, a rural town in non-fictional Virginia, US, in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t really say *that* much about the plot, so let me summarize that really quick, because I can do better than the official synopsis! (Or let’s pretend I can.)

Blue Sargent comes from a family of psychics, yet she does not have any powers of her own. Even worse, she is a bit of an amplifier for the others, meaning she is always somehow but never directly involved in the business. As if that isn’t enough for an identity crisis, every psychic she has ever met has told her that her kiss would kill her true love. Yikes.

But because she is that amplifier, she comes to a church watch on St. Mark’s Eve, where psychics see the spirits of those to die within the following year. It’s important business, but to her it’s really just staring into the dark. Until she does actually see a spirit: That of Gansey. Of course this is not a coincidence. No, to add to this teen’s mount of problems, there are only two reasons why a non-seer would see someone’s spirit: They are their true love, or they killed them. Or, in Blue’s case, maybe both.

The aforementioned Gansey is Henrietta’s Golden Boy, the son of politicians (read: he’s fucking loaded). He does not run with the Republicans though, he runs with dead Welsh kings, meaning he has been searching for the probably dead, presumably sleeping Welsh king Glendower (*1350; †1416; yikes) for the past like seven years. Why the fuck would he do that? Well, legend says that he will grant a wish to whoever wakes him, and our favorite PTSD-ridden guy really wants that favor.

Aiding him are fellow Aglionby students Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch and Noah Czerny, plus Henry Cheng, though only a lot later in the series, but I really did not want to leave out that menace (affectionately) here. The paths of Blue and the boys cross because of Gansey’s search for Glendower, plus the fact that Blue works at a popular pizza place, but that’s a lot less whimsical. And, well, there’s the implication that Gansey might also be her true love, but perhaps she just kills him because of his bad fashion sense, it would be justified. Anyway, in true Famous Five fashion (Ronan is the dog; I won’t elaborate, the girls that get it, get it) they are of course not the only ones searching for the king, so it’s not completely a wholesome friend bonding activity all the way through.

Be prepared for: friendship and growing up, lots of treasure hunting, family mysteries, magical forests, illegal and slightly distasteful activities (our favorite of course), but most of all, heavily queer-coded (or even canonically queer) characters. Be Gay, Do Crime.

Thank you for answering my last ask, can I have your take on if the girl in ur last fic hadve gotten just a TOUCH more frightened after the knife incident and started openly weeping when jason started touching her (i feel like she was already on the brink) would he keep going? I don't think that would feel consensual to her, especially after the knife thing. It already feels like she's ½way a prisoner, given the fact that he just goes and re-abducts her when she tries to leave. Does he already understand that what he's doing is very dubiously consensual, and he's going ahead anyways bc he dgaf, or if she were to point out that Jason's got the threat of violence constantly hanging over her head and that she can't safely deny him without jeopardizing all her bones and her mental welfare then it would bring him up short? It really seems like Jason understands she doesn't really want him physically (at least not in the way he'll have her) and he's just gonna plow on ahead bc she did not specifically say no. “Will you get mad at me if I say no?” I think he would. I think he understands shes afraid already.

if reader had been more outwardly emotional and made it very clear to him that she didn't want him touching her, he would have stopped. i am not saying that jason's behavior is right or correct in any way (this is dark fiction, remember) but if reader would have told him to stop or pushed him away, he most likely would have gone to the couch or just turned over and internalize the rejection, giving reader the silent treatment.

to answer the next part, does jason know that what he is doing isn't exactly consensual or right? its complicated. i want to give a quick disclaimer and say that the reasoning i'm about to explain is not any sort of justification for similar behavior irl, this is just what is going on in the mind of a very traumatized, very broken fictional character with a devastating backstory.

the first few weeks reader was living with jason, he probably would have let her leave if she said she wanted to. if she disappeared? he would have gone looking for her, absolutely. and also be pissed that she didn't tell him where she was going, and that she went out on her own. in my little au, joker planted doubts about jason and reader's relationship in his mind just like he manipulated jason's feelings towards bruce and the others. so upon their initial reunion, jason was skeptical and angry, and was kind of expecting her to leave. but after weeks of constant reassurance and promises, he finally started to believe reader, even though his insecurities remain. once he started putting the smallest bit of trust and faith in reader, that's the point where he would not allow reader to leave. even if she wanted to, jason has it in his head that she promised to be by his side no matter what, and he would cling to that and use it to guilt her and justify him keeping her, potentially, against her will. [he wouldn't force himself on her physically, but he would for sure keep her from leaving.]

homeboy is in the middle of trying to de-program all the shit joker put in his head, he is constantly second-guessing his relationships and the people around him, and his relationship with reader is the only steady presence he is allowing himself to trust. so if she decided to go, at this point, he would fight tooth and nail to keep her. he would most likely be in denial, and cling on even tighter.

he can see that reader is scared, but he is so scared himself that it's hard for him to focus on anything else. the physical and psychological torture he went through has, in my mind, left him so broken when it comes to bonds and relationships that some of his logic is just not there anymore. i imagine this makes it even harder for reader, too, seeing him work on establishing himself in gotham's underworld and being so cunning and sharp when it comes to executing his plans, but being so sensitive and snapping at her and his men if the wrong thing is said.

joker taught him that fear is the ultimate tool for control. jason may deny it, but he's taken those lessons to heart, whether he realizes it or not.

Dr Emily Grey does not have a fursona but she does think theyre neat and has let her patients all give her one, tho none of them agree on what she is. I think she's a shrike, specifically a great grey shrike! they're VICIOUS little birds, who dont look like much but they regularly hunt shit twice their size and are also known for impaling bugs on thorns and like, barbed wire?? theyre neat, and technically i think they count as corvids? clever little hunting machines

anyways so the reason elizabeth is being put into the torment nexus again in my mind is bc i think i somewhat figured a way for merehawke to happen even if fenris is there (bc the biggest issue is that elizabeth is very loyal to fenris so if she's in a relationship with him, she's not doing anything with anyone else)

the idea is that basically most of it happens during the 3 years in between acts 2 and 3. elizabeth finally has direct contact with meredith due to being champion and anders's words of what if your wealth and status is not enough to keep the knight commander away? so she decides she's gonna use this opportunity to like. ok if i get the commander on my side, i can maybe use what new found influence i have to make things slightly better for mages without fear of the biggest templar in kirkwall coming down on me or smthg. and this begins post act 2, when fenris and elizabeth are broken up.

but then the whole meredith gets very insane very quickly about anyone who gives her a crumble of being on her side and events like those depicted in test of faith begin (which basically. is that elizabeth enters a physical relationship with meredith as a way of getting on her good side, but which also leads her to do questionable things. its veyr much a im trying to do my best and save everyone and i keep getting myself screwed for it, and its all happening precisely because. she is not with fenris atm)

but then she DOES get back with fenris in act 3. and i think this is where the 'elizabeth is extremely guarded and private about her relationship with fenris' comes from bc i think. she wouldn't want meredith to know that hey not only behind closed doors am i calling you crazy but im also fucking a whole other person. but she also doesnt want Fenris to know about what she's doing. (and the thing is too, elizabeth knows that like 3 years later, its not like she can really End Things with meredith without blood being involved. but she is allowing herself to this bc she loves fenris, and he is the one good constant in her life and him coming back was the one thing she wanted for 3 years). it becoms a conflict of. there's a ton of shit wheighing down on her mind and she no longer has any fucking clue of what she's doing besides trying to make things better and failing spetacularly at it. however, since elizabeth is really good at masking, i think a lot of people don't notice all of the things that are affection her personally.

and i think it makes anders blowing up the chantry almost a freedom to her. by doing that, anders is putting everyone in a position where they have to pick a side and elizabeth knows like whatever happens, im probably going to die anyways. so she can openly oppose meredith cause its like. well i didnt know how to end this and now i have the perfect opportunity if i die today at least i die fighting what is most important. (which i think would also make sense why fenris specifically tells hawke not to die out there. like ok i know he says that bc its the final battle and this is the final goodbye, but its also like. 'hum im seeing that you're a little too ok with dying here but I'M not ok with you dying so dont you even try' type deal)

anyways the main reason im saying its the torment nexus again tis bc of the. elizabeth never really did have. a choice. things happened and she tried to make the best out of it but in the end, she just had to go with whatever was thrown in her way. she never even really had any tangible social power considering that meredith makes it clear that the role of champion can be put away the moment she thinks hawke is a threat to the city (which goes back to having to comply and just do whatever's thrown your way for the sake of survival)

is any birthmarks or beauty marks that maybe you have, or the boys hair being curlier than his, or his skin tone, or maybe he has your nose. whatever it is, he knows he's looking at the imperfect combination of you and him.

(cove's heart is beating outta his chest right now, n you're lucky he only stumbles instead of fainting, because this really is a shock... but that deeper part inside of him, that egotistical, primal almost, part of his heart swells up at the thought, the reality. that his son looks mostly, if not entirely like him.)

but after shock, he's sad. I think he'd be really sad, because he realizes that this is why you broke up right? and no matter how in control of your emotions you think you may be, your wide eyes show how afraid, nervous, and sad you are. he knows. he knows without even talking to you and it hurts

and after he gets past the anger and confusion stage, maybe even in between in fact- which would be more natural since, I think he'd feel this all at once but that's besides the point

he'd be really sad he missed all his sons milestones. walking, first words... God he probably dreams about it (when he does eventually fall asleep), and now his heart is tugging at the seams and the seams are RIPPING.

he also starts thinking about how hard it must've been doing it by yourself. and going through all that without him, your partner.

but maybe you didn't rely on him like he relied on you? maybe you didn't trust him like he did you, maybe you just... didn't need him. like he needed you.

you did break up afterall, and you never let him know about the kid until now, so maybe you thought he'd be a failure of a father and nipped it in the bud before disaster struck...

but I also think that's where anger comes in. because you didn't tell him. he didn't have a choice at all.

he knows he had a tendency to hesitate or run away, but he thinks really hard about it, and he knows he wouldn't have ran away from this.

leaving you alone would scare him a lot more than being a father. being a bad or absent father would scare him a lot more than trying to be a good one. knowingly abandoning a life he helped create, would scare him so much more. he wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise.

so while he gets it. he doesn't get why you didn't try.

and if you explain that you worried about ruining his future, he's so upset and so mad because how could you make that choice for him? how could you take on the burden alone?

this is also where confusion merges in, because while the answers are so obvious or easy to guess, he just can't believe it. he doesn't wanna believe it...

cove still loves you. he's loved you his whole life, it's hard to stop even 5 years later... and seeing you, it makes his heart throb because he's dreamed about this for many nights.

you broke up with him without giving any answers. you even up and moved by the end of the week so when he tried to give you space, before talking to you, it was too late. your room was pretty much void of every sign of life.

you took all your treasured items, your clothes- spare some youd been meaning to get rid of, your pictures, your hobby items. everything. he's surprised you didn't just take the bed and frame.

he's surprised you didn't just carve out his heart n take it with you, because if it's still in his chest, why does it feel so hollow?...

it'd take a really long time to even think of a romantic relationship. if at all. maybe cove's even accepted the break up at some point, depending on how long you'd been together. but if you'd been together since you were 13, it's a hard pill to swallow. bc you can put up with his angsty teenage self, what changed...?

I think seeing you be a parent, and so adored by your son, warms up his heart. makes him fall in love a bit at the sight.

it's not instant, he's getting to know you again. and getting to know this life that he didn't even know was waiting for him.

it's a good 2 or 3 years of figuring out this mess until it becomes something that makes sense. or as much sense as it can make. and if there's still something there, no matter how miniscule. it will catch fire.

now about the kiddo... he's so scared. and I hope you took a few days of talking with cove, and prbly cliff n Kyra bc they have a lotta feelings n thoughts on this too, before you try to integrate cove into his life.

it's small. cove meeting you at the park, and either your son is asking cove a billion questions (both abt why the sky is blue, and awkward questions abt why he wasn't present before...)

or he's trying to drag him on the monkey bars (doesn't work, cove's feet are on the ground still....)

or he's sitting silently on the blanket, reading, occasionally showing cove his favorite scene of the picture book or making him pronounce a word

but it does get bigger, it becomes lunch-n-movie dates, spending the night at your house (at your son's insistence. prbly bc he didn't want him to leave after a fun day), then cove taking him out alone..

it's a lot. and sometimes it feels like you're going backwards or that you're not moving at all because it's hard, for awhile. and even though his dad is on speed dial, there's not enough information he can give cove in how to take care of and deal with a kid he just met a few months ago.

especially a kid who already has a bit of personality, is hell on wheels (like most 5 year olds), possibly has many questions n sometimes problems with cove suddenly being here... it's a lot. n cliff can't help with any of it really.

he does get comfortable, eventually. although there's still times when he's sad, sometimes even angry about what happened, and all he's missed out on, he's so so happy to not miss out on anything else.
