Question: The Mage Stone woke Merlin because of its powerful magic. Why do some magic artifacts do it and not others?

It implies it was not just whenever it was in, and as we saw before it was not when magic was activly running through it.

So does it have a sort of conciousness? Does it decide? Am I overthinking this?

My answer: The Complete Guide, states that the Mage Stone was once an ordinary item that was enchanted and given great power. So that would make it similar in design to the Cup of Life (which Merlin can also sense).

The book makes of saying that magical individuals can be drawn to magical beings or objects. Only to then point out separately… “ And then there is Merlin ...”

So Merlin falls under that category in some ways, and yet we all know he’s also not mortal, since he’s the incarnation of magic. 🪄 Therefore he might react differently to magic items than normal sorcerers.

My answer: The only thing we know for sure is that the Mage Stone was once an ordinary object before being enchanted with great magic. And that it was created by “the Ancients” over a thousand years ago.

Question/thought: Merlin was killed when the Mage Stone reflected his staff blast back at him?

My answer: Correct. The blue crystal on a Sidhe’s staff shoots deadly energy bolts that kill instantly.

Merlin was not only struck by one in “The Gates of Avalon” episode, but the Mage Stone deflected the full power of that deadly bolt back at him in this one and yet he was able to survive. So that’s two times now that Merlin absorbed a lethal attack and woke up with no injuries.

Book description: Merlin attacked Tauren with Sophia Tirmawr's Sidhe staff, but Tauren repelled its deadly blast with the Mage Stone.

Both Aulfric and Sophia bear powerful magical staffs each topped with a blue crystal.

An energy bolt from this crystal can kill.

On Aulfric's staff the words ‘To hold life and death in your hands' is carved in the ancient script Ogham.

Question: Its intersting to me what wakes Merlin and what doesn't. Also Magical artifacts, but not all magical artifacts. (Hell Sigan's heart doesnt even do it)

My answer: The book, “The Sorcerers Curse”, mentioned that Merlin hadn’t been able to sleep the night of Sigan’s tomb being discovered, because of the racket being made to unearth the castles vault.

So unlike Morgana, who had fallen asleep, he didn’t exactly have the opportunity to wake up from a prophetic dream.

However, once the tomb was open (and the excavation crew were no longer working), Merlin awoke with a start to the sound of a raven cawing in his nightmares.

So Merlin did have a slight prophetic dream about Sigan’s arrival. He just needed the opportunity to fall asleep without a racket or Arthur barking orders at him in order to experience it.

au where merlin pulled sigan’s spirit from cedric’s body and tries to shove him back in the jewel but fails and now sigan’s soul is stuck in merlin’s body and he’s just a voice in merlin’s head urging him to kill everyone. everytime uther enters the room sigan goes “oh gods this bitch again” or “someone hasn’t killed him yet?” when theres an assassin going after arthur, sigan is just like “why are we fighting so hard to save this asshat? he dumped a bucket of water on us earlier” or when arthur says something borderline sweet and merlin is lowkey swooning, sigan is just gagging in his head. when merlin gets annoyed and is insulting arthur but cant think of something particularly scathing, sigan chimes in and the words just roll off his tongue. sigan teaches merlin more powerful magic/spells that aren’t in any of the books.

Re-watching season two episode one of Merlin is so Ahhhh

Imagine if this was the episode that Arthur just started listening to Merlin about bad people. After seeing his people die because he trusted the wrong person, Arthur feels guilty. He realizes that Merlin knew that Cedric was sleazy (although Cedric wasn’t trying it kill everyone, it’s just the process of things). So now everytime Merlin vaguely gives a nose scrunch Arthur is like “well you have to go, banished”

Or like Merlin just is so petty and hold it against Arthur. He doesn’t immediately go back to work for Arthur right but instead he stays with Gaius and lcommits to the physician assistant position. Until Arthur is like “Merlin please everyone is being nice to me and you keep calling me sire, and everyone is spending time with you but me and sir Owen keeps wistfully talking about you ..” and so on.

But after Merlin comes back to being Arthur’s servant he makes petty remarks under his breath like a scorned wife. “Oh yeah George is a great servant, maybe he should be your manservant” and “you’re completely right Arthur, Henry did a fabulous job with your armour, maybe you should throw me away again and hire him.”

Arthur’s just like “Merlin please, it was one time” and tries to be better.

OR Could you imagine If one high ranking person believed in Merlin?? Like Leon starts to realize that Merlin has frighteningly correct assumptions of peoples and situations. So he just starts to pay more attention to when Merlin says “hey I think this person sucks”.

At first he thinks that Merlin is complaining about Cedric becuase he’s getting kicked out of the manservant position, and he empathizes but there is nothing Leon can do. Accept be coldly cordial around Cedric. But then Merlin is like “he’s been possessed” and Leon thinks it would be remiss to ignore that becuase it puts Arthur’s life at stake. So he follows Cedric around and sees him in the courtyard heeling out a spell and wacks him in the head whiles he is distracted.

Things I like

Clotpole! The reaction from all three was iconic. Merlin didn’t even know what he said. And I’m sure Cedric and Arthur had zero clue what a clotpole was either.

Merlin learned to read Arthur’s gestures!

Merlin was so petty and instantly took it out on Cedric lol

Bradley's incredulous face was used so much in this ep lol so many ridiculous things happened around Arthur.

Arthur looked genuinely happy when he asked who threw the spear. I liked that he never felt jealous or outshone when his knights (or servants I guess) did better than him.

The face Merlin had after he received the magic was beautiful. The wide eyes. The epiphany. The breathy voice.

I Love Sigan’s speech. The way the lines were delivered. Mackenzie Crook was brilliant.

You see that dude, sigan, who turned day into night? Well what if he never turned it back and Merlin had always feel that something was very wrong with daytime and nighttime. As if he should be awake at night and sleeping in the day you know.

Then one day he just figures it out and turns it back as it should be he thinks then he goes back to bed while Camelot (the whole world actually) is freaking the fuck out. Which would be hilarious post-magic reveal or not. Like imagine Arthur trying to wake up Merlin while the other mumbles "nothing is wrong, it's right again. I will take care of the tides tomorrow" "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WILL TAKE CARE OF THE TIDES TOMORROW?!?! MERLIN DON'T YOU DARE PUT A SILENCING SPELL AROUND YOU. MERLIN. MERLIN!!!"

episode rewrite of 2x01 the curse of cornelius sigan where merlin is jealous of cedric, and arthur purposely let cedric do whatever, sometimes praising him because he likes to see jealous merlin but it went too far (arthur didnt know he’s like evil or something), merlin got frustrated because arthur never listens and thinks that arthur is gonna sack him for some random dude and then they fight and arthur kiss him silly, and apologize of course, also cedric walks in on them

every time merlin follows arthur out on hunts or quests or what have you, he snatches food from the kitchens and goes around feeding the animals in the forrest while he’s not protecting arthur and the rest of his idiots from danger. now as they all make their way thru the woods, theres a trail of deer, mice, birds, rabbits, and wolves that just follow behind them. a group of bandits gets the drop on them and start to go after merlin when a bunch of birds swoop down from the trees and start pecking at the men and wolves encircle merlin, growling and the men, and they all turn to see huge stags with even bigger antlers glaring at them before they headbut the men with their antlers and knock them out cold. if disney existed, gwaine would joke that he’s a disney princess

A question: why in "darkest hour" Merlin didn't just throw Sigan's soul stone thingy throught the rift? Like correct me if i am wrong, but it was life for life exchange and he is technically alive.
