Fanfics I really liked in August 2023
So. Since I keep a list of what I´ve read anyway (there´s always a list), I will rec all the fics I´ve wholly enjoyed on a monthly basis. Old and new, canon or AU, big or small authors, long or short but nearly always Johnlock (-ish).
The Traveller by Calais_Reno @calaisreno
Sherlock works for the ministery as a time traveller in oder to prevent an apocalyptic event happening. But his adversary is a traveller too and when timelines begin to change and mingle one John Watson enters the game.
Great idea and impressive writing!! Everything and every timeline is coherent and guessing how it will evolve (and being proved wrong, LOL) has been a lot of fun and intrigue.
Last Words by PrettyArbitrary and Final Hours by bendingsignpost
“You should die faster,” Sherlock recommends. “We’d both be better off.” Even as a ghost Sherlock remained an obnoxious dick. Very delightful and without angst. Two companion pieces.
The Master of Latham Hall by Kryptaria @kryptaria
A re-read. Awesome ghost story and casefic mix which is very suspenseful. Also, while the story unfolds, parallels between the past and present begin to appear which will lead to much appreciated conclusions.
A Rock, An Island by stopthat
It's that fateful moment in Bart's lab when Sherlock tries to get rid of John via claiming Mrs Hudson is in danger. But this time John notices something's off and things go very differently compared to BBC canon. Thankfully.
Ever the Strange Case by DAngeles @dangeles
A XO fic where Sherlock and John stumble into the multiverse and meet Dr. Strange and Mr. Ross. Shenanigans ensue. So much sassy funny and on point in character dialogue between them. Great!
Fallen series by mamishka 3 fics @the-mamishka
The series follows canon episodes 1-3 closely. However, Sherlock is a fallen angel and a lot of the other characters are supernatural beings as well which gives the storyline a new twist.

Tag Game Masterpost
Got tagged by some wonderful humans, including @celestialmickey, @energievie, @creepkinginc, @metalheadmickey and @look-i-love-u to complete these fun tag games, thank you and spring blossoms to each of you! 💐💙
********
✨️ Tag Game Tuesday Wednesday ✨️
Name: Lyds ⚘️
Age: 34 for another 4 weeks or so 🗓
Where in the world are you? Europe, middle of nowhere📍
The meaning behind your URL: 'Ardent' is one of my favorite words, husband calls me Foxxy cause of my red hair, also it sounds like 'ardent fucks' together so cheeky win 🍑
Your second favorite color: Dusty pink 💕
Any pets? Jasper the bun 🐇
Favorite season: Spring, I feel as if I'm in love with the whole world during it, it kicked in earlier this year and I'm absolutely fine with that 🌸
Last thing you read: Galladrabbles. My brain has been doing its cute thing where it can't focus on reading or writing anything longer than that for the past few weeks 🙃
Last song you listened to: I played the Crazy Ex Girlfriend soundtrack while getting ready to go out, so Gettin' Bi (which has become an anthem of mine ngl) 🎵
What are you wearing right now? A hoodie with a crumbling print of a tattooed and pierced out princess Jasmine taking a selfie, black sweatpants and socks with chihuahuas wearing Santa hats on them, my go-to sexy at home look 😅
A hobby of yours: Writing fanfiction and planning our home makeover, both usually taking place only in my head 💭
Your comfort show or movie: Got several, going with Pride and Prejudice (the 1995 BBC miniseries) this time 📜
And finally, what are you up to today? Had a monthly supply of hay delivered to me this morning, went to a job interview that went surprisingly well, did some chores and now I'm chilling here 😎
********
✨️ Tag Game Fandom Edition ✨️
Your name: Lyds 🌸
Your age: Still 34 😅
Your first fandom(s): Not sure what qualifies, but probably House M.D. 🩺
Your current fandom(s): Though my hyperfixations are always changing, Shameless/Gallavich is the only fandom I actively engage in 🧑🏼🤝🧑🏻
How did you first get into fandom? I was part of a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp RPG message board where I played 3 characters and we also used to write what I now realize was fanfiction on the spot over MSN. A bunch of us were obsessed with House M.D. and someone must have mentioned fanfiction.net to me cause I got hooked on reading Hilson and Huddy stories around the same time 👀
How long have you been engaging with fandom spaces? The RPG/House era started in 2008, but I didn't become active on Tumblr and AO3 until getting involved in the Shameless fandom as of April 2022 🗓
How often do you read fanfics? When my brain is in the right place, I'd say a couple stories a week 📱
Top 3 characters from your current fandom(s): Ian gallagher, Mickey Milkovich, Castiel (still going through Supernatural and loving every bit of it) 💙
Have you ever written a fic for a fandom? If so, shout it out! Yes, still at one completed ficlet and a Galladrabble collection on my AO3, not counting the 5-6 WIPs I have in my docs 📂
Have you ever drawn fanart for a fandom? Nope, can't draw to save my life 🙃
Share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about: Probably not the most original one, but Mickey never liked his full name until Ian stated he thought it was beautiful. Him using it in his wedding vows is symbolic of him reconciling with the darkest parts of himself and accepting them before offering his whole self to Ian, a declaration of love for both of them in his own way. The fact that it somewhat mirrors the act of him apprehensively coming out in front of his own hostile audience, only to confidently show his self-acceptance and love for Ian in front of their favorite people 6 years later is just icing on the (wedding) cake 💖
You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. What episode, clip, or scene are you showing them? The "I can explain this" scene when Mickey gets shot in the ass and the social worker appears at the Gallagher house, it's peak Shameless madness 😄
And finally, what does fandom mean to you? A sanctuary of creativity and comfort where we can all be, make and enjoy whatever we want, the closest thing to utopia there is 🫶
Tagging @ian-galagher, @sickness-health-all-that-shit, @gallawitchxx, @gardenerian, @squidyyy23, @juliakayyy, @whatwouldmickeydo, @auds-and-evens, @thisdivorce, @sleepyfacetoughguy and whoever sees this and would like to play! ✨️
#thank you all for tagging me over the last two weeks#decided to catch up on only these two games since there's too much to keep track of#tag game#tag game masterpost#fandom friends#about me

Halloween Special 4 | Found Me
Namjoon & Reader
Genre: Horror
Word count: 786 words
A/N: This tale is partly based on a real incident that occurred to my sister. Geophysics isn't my field of expertise, so I apologise for any mistakes!
A week-long Halloween Special, also for Bangtan Bookclub’s October Supernatural Challenge!
[1] Late Night Shower (Seokjin) [2] Extra Passenger (Yoongi) [3] Regional Photos (Hoseok) [4] Found Me (Namjoon) [5] Visiting Granny (Jimin) [6] A Long Drive (Taehyung) [7] Secret Tunnel (Jungkook)
Disclaimer/Copyright
"Excited?"
Namjoon's question drew out a laugh from you, but you nodded your reply. It was impossible for your heart not to stir just a little at the sight of excavators and workers moving about at the site that was previously flat land only a few days ago. Last week you and the team were there, investigating the ground underneath to determine whether it was strong enough to build an apartment complex upon.
As someone who'd just started her postgraduate studies, you were the newest addition to the group. In half a year, you'd already had the chance to join several on-site trips, but the results were never anything more than what you could see on a computer. Geophysics utilises non-invasive techniques, so all you could see from your work was a bunch of numbers and lines of data from equipment representing what lies underneath the surface you walked on.
This was the first time you were actually about to see the actual, physical outcome of your study. To see the structure of the Earth on your computer dug up in real life. Namjoon, a fellow student who had been longer on the team than you had, completely understood the rush that you were feeling. Even if he didn't, the excited expression you wore on your face was impossible to miss.
"There's nothing really worth seeing though," he remarked, pointing out the fact that both of you already knew. This wasn't one of the projects that involved looking for something like ground water or buried treasure. "They're just digging so that they can lay down the foundation."
"I know, but still."
As expected based on the result you'd obtained, all that was unearthed by the excavators was... the Earth. The thrill that you felt in the beginning slowly wore off and you were about to suggest a tea break to Namjoon shouts from the far end of the rectangular hole they were making caught your attention.
Running over to join the small crowd, you and Namjoon saw the source of the commotion. Right there at the very corner of the site was a bone. From the looks of it — a human bone.
The digging was halted immediately, and archaeologists were brought in. A seemingly humdrum day turned out to be a very action-packed one. Not long after the archaeologists arrived, the media started swarming the scene. Surprisingly, a full skeleton of a small girl in a fetal position was unearthed.
"Did you expect to find something like this when you surveyed the site?"
"No. It was at the very corner of the area that we studied, so we must have missed it," you found yourself answering to one of the reporters.
It all happened so quickly that even when you returned home later that night you were still unsure what to make of the day's incident and the fact that you would probably be mentioned in tomorrow's newspapers. After fending off questions from friends and family with Namjoon's help, you felt so wrung out that when your head finally hit the pillow, you fell asleep immediately.
You were usually a deep sleeper and your slumber was normally dreamless, but that night was different. At some point in your sleep you were visited by a young girl, a toddler really, with tanned skin and eyes that sparkled like jewels. She wasn't anyone you recognised and this was out of the norm for you, yet a sense of calm filled you at the smile that painted her small, round face.
"Thank you," she said to you, her voice drifting towards you in the unknown space that seemed to come from a place too far for you to reach.
"What for?" You asked, puzzled.
"Because of you, my body was finally found," she explained. "For so long I was alone, buried alive and left behind, but I was trapped and couldn't leave. Now thanks to you, I am free."
"Why were you buried alive?" Indignation filled you at the cruel treatment towards the little girl. Her beautiful eyes were washed over with such sorrow that you immediately regretted asking her that question.
"I don't know," her voice was soft and sad, shaking her head. "My parents said I was too young to understand."
This girl, obviously innocent, was probably killed by her people over some ancient superstition practiced in the old days. Your heart wept for the injustice she was shown without so much as an explanation, but there was nothing you could do for her now, so you simply nodded your understanding.
"Thank you," she expressed her gratitude again as she slowly faded away with the light. "I didn't believe it would ever happen, but you found me."

Monthly Follower Recs
Monthly follower recommendations for the month of June, 2022
Amity (ao3) - thattumblrchick
Summary: For as long as he could remember, Dan Howell has had a personality more fragile than the flowers he pressed. After meeting Phil Lester- an explosion of a human being living in an explosion of a house- he learns that life should make you feel more than just complacency.
21 thoughts I had today (ao3) - jestbee
Summary: Dan doesn't have a voice in his head.
It's just a malfunction, a lack of one thing or another in a complex series of firing synapses and chemicals, but it always sounds like words.
Believe in Me (ao3) - Elleberquist6
Summary: Dan Howell is living at home while he’s saving money for college, which isn’t easy since his parents don’t understand him. Unlike them, he loves dogs, is a vegetarian, has no interest in the family business, and he despises the supernatural. He struggles to accept things that are illogical, even though he is a kitsune. Kitsune are foxes whose powers involve the ability to cast illusions, but Dan just wants to be normal. Phil Lester has just moved to London, where he works as a dog walker. When his path crosses with Dan, Phil is eager to get to know him. Unfortunately, Phil soon finds that being friends with Dan is far more complicated than he could have imagined.
Bury Your Flame - botanistlester
Summary: (tw) After receiving a dragon egg when his grandfather passed away, Phil is forced to ask for help from the local dragon tamer. As he soon finds out, Dan Howell is nothing he’s been expecting. Infuriating, ludicrous, and completely lacking respect, Dan is everything Phil hates. But Phil will do anything to make his grandfather proud, even if that means getting help from the local cluck.
different eyes to see the same old things (ao3) - chickenfree
Summary: “Other side of the seesaw?” he says, when Phil’s still quiet. It doesn’t seem like a talking night, as much as Dan wants it to be.
Knew I'd Find You Again || ospbb 2022 anastasia au (ao3) - AnironSidh
Summary: In the twilight of the Russian Empire, the younger son of Czar Nigel Lestov finds an unlikely friend in a kitchen boy with a very different past. Philip Lestov has no idea what is to come, this future with his new friend stretching out as far as he can see, and Daniel Howlov gets a glimpse at a world so far from his own. Ten years later, the czar and his wife are dead and their older son is left to live with his grandmother in Paris; far from the new regime that wants the Lestovs dead. The young tsarevich Philip has gone missing while rumors fly of his survival. The dowager Empress has offered a reward, ten million rubles for her beloved grandsons return, a reward that does not go unnoticed by now conman Daniel Howlov and his close friend, former Duchess Cornelia. When they come across a man with no memories and a resemblance to the prince, the two hatch a plan. Followed closely by Kolya Petrov, an officer set on completing his fathers mission, and the mystic Rasputin, who wants nothing more than the death of the last Lestovs, they must journey to Paris with their fake prince. Instead of a reward, they find something much more unexpected waiting for them. Dan counted on a way out, not falling in love.
I Want It, I Got It (ao3) - Yiffandquiff (paradisobound)
Summary: Phil Lester was a worker for the BBC in London. Working in the advertising department, he was content being alongside his friend and fellow coworker PJ during every shift. However, the BBC is temporarily being used as a film set for a new movie starring Hollywood ‘It’ star, Daniel Howell. Being stuck as an extra on the set, Phil finds it’s hard to ignore the famous star. And maybe, just maybe, Dan finds it hard to ignore Phil as well.
one of those days (ao3) - nivi_chip
Summary: Phil has a dizzy spell and Dan takes care of him.
Or, Dan is the man with the plan (rip the stereo shows imy)
strike a deal, kiss my lips (ao3) - natigail
Summary: Witches were the only magical beings capable of binding and controlling demons. It required a complicated ritual and crazy amounts of magic.
It happening on accident was practically unheard of until Phil came along and got tangled up with a snarky and dangerous demon named Dan. Suddenly bound together, Phil must grapple with control over a chaotic demon that wants to strip the skin from his bones.
And maybe strip the clothes off of his body as well.
we could never (ao3) - danielshands
Summary: Dan navigates the world while also contemplating coming out.

Ep 205: Terry Carnation's "Dark Air" and Rich Hatem
“Imagine the universe, compressed on the head of a pin…”
– Scott’s remembrance of a Carl Sagan quote, which, turns out, probably originates from a parody impression of Carl Sagan
Description:
We have a very special guest joining us tonight, metaphysical "astralnaut," philosopher of the liminal, "Pope of the Paranormal," and host of the AM Radio talk show Dark Air, Terry Carnation. Terry first got his start in the paranormal radio genre when unexpectedly thrust into taking over for another show. While working as a late-night rock n' roll Disc Jockey for an FM station in Buffalo, NY, in 1992, Reginald Wilcox, the host of the paranormal call-in show that aired after Terry's slot was mysteriously murdered while Terry was in the bathroom... or so he claims. In his unflappable sense of duty, apparently stronger than his sense of legal obligation, Terry immediately took over the role of consigliere for listeners stupefied by the supernatural. And in Terry's words, "that's how a legend was created." Now, after a three-year hiatus, Terry Carnation returns with a new podcast, also called Dark Air, available starting April 1, 2021, wherever podcasts are given away for free. While you may not have heard of him, there will be something uneasily familiar about his voice and visage. And the audience will come to know his strange power for tearing off the head of disbelief and reaching down deep into our souls to yank out the viscera of our darkest fears and mysteries. Wrapped around our interview with Terry, our good buddy Rich Hatem joins us once again to discuss his latest adventures and projects. We'll also con him into playing our version of a game show, in the spirit of America's NPR radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and Britain's Would I Lie to You? We'll tell Rich three outrageous paranormal stories, and he has to guess which one is fake. Please join us for an episode of inscrutable levity.

Rainn Wilson is best known for playing the role of Dwight Schrute on NBC's The Office. Additional film and television credits include Galaxy Quest, Almost Famous, The Rocker, Super, Six Feet Under, Juno, Backstrom, Star Trek Discovery, Thom Pain, The Meg, Mom, Don't Tell a Soul and Utopia. He will also be appearing in the forthcoming podcast Dark Air with Terry Carnation. Torchwood fandom survey results - part 3
Third and final part of the results! This time: Torchwood beyond the TV series. This means the books, the audio dramas, the fanfics, etc.
All the graphs and data are under a cut.
Disclaimer: This is a survey promoted almost exclusively on tumblr and the results are therefore necessarily biased by the demographics of tumblr users.
All the data presented below is on 155 participants.
Let’s start with the Torchwood extended universe and its different forms and ranges. For each range of the Torchwood extended universe, have you read/listened to it?
Four types of Torchwood stories are quite ahead of the others:
the BBC books, which ran concurrently to the TV series
the BBC audio dramas: the seven audio dramas released by the BBC concurrently to the TV series
the Big Finish monthly range: monthly audio dramas that started in 2015
the Big Finish single special releases, which so far include The Torchwood Archive, Outbreak and Believe.
It makes sense for the BBC stuff. It’s been around for a while and can be found for free (sometimes legally, sometimes not) online.
The monthly range is also quite easy to understand. They are cheaper than other releases and, if you want to focus one type of story or one particular character or the story all of fandom is talking about *coughs*Broken*coughs*, you can buy just the relevant stories.
Now the single special releases, I kind of wish I had separated the three because I wonder how the two are represented in the 46% that didn’t listen to at least one of those. I could make good cases for all three (and I’m gonna).
Believe is the first audio drama with the five original team members (kind of, sorry Suzie) so there was a lot of hype before release date. However, it got mixed reviews (at least in my corner of tumblr) and is quite expensive.
Outbreak has the same price and is post series 2. However, it is simply the best Big Finish story ever. Yes, it’s a fact. No, I’m not biased and I won’t take any criticism. :-D
The Torchwood Archive is cheaper and was an anniversary release. However, it is somewhat of an isolated story more focused on the history of the Torchwood Institute than on the characters.
¯\(ツ)/¯ I guess I’ll have to do another survey about these at one point.
At the other end of the scale, quite behind the others, are two Big Finish audio drama ranges:
The story continues: the official series 5 and 6 of Torchwood (Aliens Among Us and God Among Us)
The Sins of Captain John: a recent John Hart range.
That was to be expected. For The story continues, as we’ve seen with Miracle Day’s audience in the previous results, a lot of people were not keen on what happens to Torchwood after Children of Earth. On top of that, these are box-sets so more expensive.
As for The Sins of Captain John, again it’s a box-set so more expensive and it’s not focused on one of the “main characters” (sorry John).
On the ranges that fall in between these two extremes, I’d like to mention The Lives of Captain Jack. I thought it would do better as it’s about Jack and some of the stories focus on important milestones in his life (for example his falling out with the Time Agency or what happened after his first resurrection). I don’t know if it’s a price issue or the fact that people are more interested in stories within the Torchwood era than things in the distant past or future. If you haven’t listened to it and don’t intend to, I’d be curious to know as to why.
Now that we have the audience numbers, let’s see what the audience thought. The results only include the people who were familiar with the stories so they are on fewer than the usual 155 participants.
For each range of the Torchwood extended universe, would you recommend it to fellow fans?
Trailing far behind is the Torchwood Magazine stuff: the short stories and the comics. It makes sense to me: they’re not very consequential in terms of plot or character work and vary wildly in quality.
It is interesting that the two graphs (audience and review) kind of match in terms of variation between ranges. It confirms what I’ve observed in fandom. Word of mouth plays a big role in how people choose which stories to buy.
It is also interesting to see where they differ a bit. For example, Torchwood One, The Lives of Captain Jack and The Sins of Captain John, which have an average to low audience (far less listened to than the monthly range), get lots of love (almost as much “All of it” as the monthly range). If word of mouth is as crucial as it seems from the rest of the results, I wonder if it is an issue with interest or with price.
Okay, once again, this is getting long, let’s go over the fandom stuff quickly.
Which social media platforms/fandom spaces do you use to participate in Torchwood fan activities?
Tumblr and AO3 dominate that poll…then again, it’s a poll promoted on Tumblr so… I’m not on twitter but I do wonder if there is sizeable Torchwood fandom group there that just missed the poll. Mainly because I know some people in other fandoms who switched to twitter after the Tumblr ban a few years ago.
No other fandom space received more than one mention in the open field of the form.
Then, Which social media platforms/fandom spaces do you use to participate in Torchwood fan activities?
The big four are social media (including meta/analysis/headcanons), fanarts, fanfics and edits. I’m surprised cosplay is not higher but ¯\(ツ)/¯.
Finally, an open question: What other fandoms would you consider yourself part of?
There were 98 responses and 136 different fandoms cited. Here are the ones that got more than 10 mentions:
Marvel-related fandoms (26)
Harry Potter (24)
Star Trek (15)
Good Omens (15)
Merlin (13)
Tolkien-related fandoms (13)
BBC Sherlock (13)
Supernatural (11).
These are all big fandoms, with a bit of a bias towards the big British fandoms.
Once again, thank you to all who participated. It was fun and interesting! At least, to me. ;-)

It will cost US$11.99/month to subscribe to Hulu and remove ads. For US$5.99/month, you can get Hulu services, but the commercials will tag along. With both of these plans, you will receive a free trial for a month. If you want to watch Live TV, it will cost around US$54.99/month, and you’ll receive one week of the free trial.

Best Horror TV Shows on Amazon Prime
https://ift.tt/35tfaFS
If you’re reading this on Halloween, Happy Halloween! If you’re not reading this on Halloween, Happy Halloween anyway! With streaming services like Amazon Prime, there’s no excuse for not making every day Halloween.
You already know about some of the scariest horror movies on Amazon Prime, but don’t forget that there are plenty of terrifying and bingeworthy horror shows on Amazon Prime as well. Many of them are classics like The Veil and One Step Beyond, even more, however, are modern, disturbing fairy tales like Lore and Truth Seekers Without further ado, here are some of the scariest shows to stream on Amazon Prime.
Editor’s Note: This post is updated monthly. Bookmark this page and come back every month to stay up to date with the best horror TV shows on Amazon Prime.
Dark/Web
For those interested in anthology and serialized horror storytelling, Dark/Web offers the best of both worlds. This Amazon Prime original tells a single spooky tale, spread out over eight largely self-contained “chapters.”
Dark/Web picks up with the disappearance of cyber analyst Molly Solis (Noemi Gonzalez). As her friends investigate what happened to Molly, they begin to uncover some truly dark secrets hidden within the fabric of the Internet. Dark/Web expertly exploits real world fears about the spreading influence of this omniscient communication technology.

Lore
Aaron Mahnke’s history horror podcast Lore has always operated under the theory that truth is stranger (and scarier) than fiction. That’s the same philosophy that this Amazon Prime original adaptation adopts.
Both seasons of Lore tell a handful of real life stories that illustrate the origins of some of our world’s spookiest legends and events. Narration combined with live action recreations present tales of vampirism, grave-robbing, werewolves, and more.

Truth Seekers
(Arrives Oct. 30)
Many years ago, a certain spooky show promised that the truth is out there. And now here comes another that is still looking for it.Truth Seekers is an Amazon original from the prolific comedy-horror duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Frost stars as Gus, a lonely guy who works a boring job installing broadband. By night, however, Gus uses his a personal tragedy as inspiration to investigate all manner of the paranormal. Ghost hunting is an increasingly popular pastime and it’s past time that it got some more representation on scripted television.

The Veil
1958’s The Veil consists of dramatizations of strange tales, the majority of which also feature host Boris Karloff in the cast. At story’s end, our host is back to offer a conclusion to that particular story of “the world beyond our understanding.”

The Best Ghost Horror TV Episodes to Watch
By Juliette Harrisson
Not that 1950s TV audiences would have known about it, because The Veil wasn’t broadcast. Footage from its episodes appeared in some late sixties TV movies, and a DVD release followed in the 1990s, but its cancellation prior to airing have made it a cult find.

Haunted State
There are so many claims of ghosts, paranormal activity, and other things that go bump in the night worldwide that sometimes it seems best just to focus on one geographic area. That’s the goal of documentary series, Haunted State. Haunted State narrows its paranormal coverage down to just one U.S. state.
That state in question? Wisconsin. Despite not achieving statehood until 1848, Wisconsin apparently has some of the most ghost activity of state in the union. And it’s up to four documentarians to investigate these spooky claims.

One Step Beyond
The amazing drama you are about to see is a matter of human record,” runs John Newland’s introduction to this Twilight Zone-esque series. “The real people who lived this story, they believe it, they know, they took that one step beyond.
Famously, Newland took one step beyond himself when making “The Sacred Mushroom” episode in which he ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms and filmed his reaction. It’s not available here, but it’s out there in both senses of the phrase.

The Day After
The phrase “The Day After” has a long track record in the disaster horror realm. That was the name of an 1983 ABC TV movie that forever traumatized a generation with the terrifying realities of nuclear war. It also just happens to be a pretty terrifying Russian TV series as well.
The Day After (or Vyzhit posle in the original Russian) is another apocalyptic tale. It tells the story of a drug company trying to create super humans but instead releasing a deadly virus. The series picks up with 11 stranger waking up in a bunker with no memory of how they got there, and who must soon shoulder the fate of mankind.

The Witching Season
Oh you wanted more horror anthologies? Well The Witching Season is more than happy to oblige. The Witching Season was a fun little project from a group of upstart filmmakers to demonstrate the power of good horror storytelling.
The anthology’s first five episodes premiered on YouTube and now they have a longtime streaming home on Amazon Prime. The fourth episode, They Live Inside Us, was even adapted into a feature film which premiered in October of 2020.

Hellier
The United States isn’t hurting for haunted locations. The country has the spooky dark magic of New Orleans, the lost ghosts of Gettysburg, and the tortured history of Salem. Then there’s … Hellier, Kentucky?
Docuseries Hellier dives deep into the creepy legacy of one of America’s least appreciated paranormal hotspots. The whole thing starts when a filmmaking team receives reports of hobgoblins on the loose in Hellier, Kentucky. But when the Canadian film crew arrives in the small, dying coal town, they soon discover that hobgoblins are the least of Hellier’s supernatural concerns.

The Living and the Dead
The BBC’s The Living and the Dead is an aesthetically beautiful show. It’s not entirely dissimilar to a British-ized The Returned. It stars Colin Moran as Nathan Appleby, a psychology who inherits a beautiful, if creepy manor.

Apparitions
When The Exorcist first premiered in 1973, it changed everything for horror. A whole world of demonology and exorcism entered into our collective unconscious to torment the masses. Still, the TV world hasn’t done much with exorcism-based horror since that then. BBC’s Apparitions from 2008, however, might be the exception. This is a nifty little horror drama that goes about demons the right way.
Apparitions stars Martin Shaw as Father Jacob Mays. Mays is tasked with examining potential miracles for canonization. But as Mays sets out, he begins to come into contact with dark forces in need of some exorcising. Apparitions is an excellent miniseries that has a shockingly complete perspective on how the Catholic Church operates.

Thus actor Rip Torn ushers viewers in to each episode of Ghost Stories, an American horror anthology series that ran for 44 episodes in the late nineties. It’s the expected things-that-go-bump-in-the-night deal, tales of hauntings, vengeful ghosts, possessions and poltergeists, all dramatised in neat half hour instalments. A show bearing the same name and hosted by Patrick Macnee is also available on the U.S. and U.K. Amazon Prime.

Most Haunted
There may be no better evidence for Western society’s insatiable appetite for creepies than the existence of British series Most Haunted. This is pretty much your standard “ghost huntin'” docuseries. But what makes it truly unique is its longevity.
The show features Yvette Fielding and a rotating cast of paranormal investigators and has run for a staggering 290 episodes over 24 seasons. And there’s still more to come! That’s just some of the fun you can have when you live in the ancient ghostly paradise that is the British Isles.

Halloween Special 1 | Late Night Shower
Seokjin x Reader
Genre: Horror
Word count: 1,304 words
A/N: This story is largely based on an occurrence that happened to me years ago.

"Sleeping already?" My roommate asked, but it was in a bored tone that said she already knew what my answer would be.
In her defense, it was pretty obvious. My face was damp, mouth fresh from my ritual cleanse and brush before going to sleep. Unlike me, she had several books and a pencil box in her hand, ready to burn the midnight oil. Most students around me seemed to prefer leave studying until the last minute, but I preferred to study early and get a good night's sleep before an exam.
"Good luck," I yawned sleepily as I tucked myself in.
"Good night," she answered with a grin, switching off the lights before leaving the room to join the other students putting their noses to the grindstone in the study room just opposite ours.
After checking my cellphone to make sure I had my alarm set for the next morning, I turned on my side and fell asleep almost immediately. One might think that it was a mark of the late hour of the night, or of fatigue, but it was not even midnight, and as for my weariness...
... It definitely wasn't that, for my eyes opened again after what seemed like a measly five seconds of sleep. My bladder poked me from the inside of the lower half of my body, cluing me in on the reason I had been roused from my sleep.
Sighing but knowing that it was useless to try to fall back to slumber until I'd emptied the contents screaming to be let out, I kicked my blanket off as I swung my legs over the side of the bed. Some time must have passed as my roommate was sound asleep in her own bed now, but I barely registered it. Just like my mind, foggy with sleep, did not notice the quietness of the dorm. The thought of getting to my destination was all my brain could think of.
However, when I finally stepped into the cluster of showers and toilet cubicles at the end of the floor, something caught my attention. The pitter-patter of water drops like rain hitting the floor tiles echoed in the otherwise silent space. I had no idea what time it was, but I knew it was well past ten when I went to sleep. Who was showering at such an ungodly hour?
Just as the thought crossed my mind, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up on their ends. Something was not right. On the other hand, I couldn't wait a moment longer. So I pushed the door of the nearest cubicle to my left and locked myself in.
After relieving myself in record time, I walked out to wash my hands at one of the bathroom sinks. The cold water flowing over my hands emphasised the chill I felt from the showers behind me, which was cool enough to bring me to a freezing point; the liquid from the tap was positively hot in contrast.
Of course, even though I always called characters in horror movies idiots for checking out a clearly suspicious and supernatural phenomena, I myself let my curiosity dictate my steps, cautiously approaching the end of the line of shower cubicles. The sound of the shower turned on at full blast was still as loud as ever, maybe even louder than when I first heard it, although that might be thanks to my imagination running wild. Yet when I peered from the end of the line, I could see that all the shower doors were wide open.
From my position, that was all I could tell. Perhaps that was for the best. To look inside the cubicles themselves would require me to stand right in front of them instead of peeping from around the corner, but even I wasn't stupid enough to do that. Unease growing into panic at a rapid rate, I hurried out towards my room. Only then I realised how quiet and dark the dorm was, everyone had gone to bed; it must have been later than I thought.
My heart was still pounding in my ears after I entered the safety of my room. Checking my phone, I saw that it was 3.05 a.m.. My roommate was still peacefully sawing logs, blissfully ignorant to what I just went through. I climbed back into bed, determined to forget the whole thing and just sleep.
However, my goal kept eluding me. Not long after I settled in among the covers, the annoying squeak of rubber slippers started sounding outside. It relayed of slow, relaxed steps — so there was actually someone showering earlier — and my mind was placated by it.
That was until the steps grew louder, nearing my room, then became faint, and then approached again. The first floor that I was on was rectangular-shaped with a hole in the middle. Rooms lined up the longer edges while the stairs and bathroom occupied the shorter ones. It didn't take me long to figure out what was going on.
Now scared out of my wits, I scrambled for my phone. There was my roommate, of course, but I knew that waking her up was next to impossible. As I listened to the ringing tone of the phone I was calling, I knew that I trusted him more as well.
"Hello?" My boyfriend's groggy voice soothed my frayed nerves a little, but my fear was ever mounting. I was almost too afraid to tell him what had happened, as though whatever was outside could hear me talking and burst through the door at any second.
"You mean it's still outside?" Jin asked after I was done with my tale, now wide awake.
I nodded, then remembered that he couldn't see me. "Yeah. I think it's just walking round and round the whole floor." Focusing my ears, I informed him, "Right now it's near the rooms on the other side."
"Well, whatever it is, don't open the door." I would've thought that he was teasing me if he hadn't said it in such a serious voice.
"I'm not that stupid!" The words came out in an indignant hiss as the footsteps drew closer, then paused right outside my door. I didn't see any shadow cast through the gap between the floor and the door, but somehow I knew it was there. After a few tense moments, the rubbery squeals of the slippers moved away again, just as leisurely as before, and I released a breath I didn't even notice I was holding.
"Hey, are you there?" Jin had been calling my name, trying to get my attention, but I didn't even notice.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm here," I said absent-mindedly. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I remembered that the exam was tomorrow for him as well, or more accurately, later today, and I was robbing him of precious sleep. "You should go to sleep. I'll be fine." My voice was a little shaky, but I tried my best to sound brave.
"No. Let's chat." He was resolute, and it wasn't hard for him to convince me to let him talk me through the ordeal. Pulling my blanket over my head, I focused on the melodious sound of his sweet voice rambling about the contents of the notes that would come out in the exam. Gradually the oppressive, mysterious footsteps faded away, defeated by my exhaustion, and finally sleep thankfully took over.
The next morning, I received a text from Jin telling me that he'd hung up after making sure I had fallen asleep, and wishing me luck on the exam. That text got me through the day, especially after finding out from some seniors I spoke to that outside our rooms, the dorm was never a safe place after three in the morning.

Monthly Media: February 2017
Yeah yeah, I already did a monthly media thing for Oscar movies, but I consumed a bunch of other stuff this month so. (Warning: super-long! Maybe I should do this thing every 2 weeks instead of every month).
……….JEFF NICHOLS MOVIES……….
My film discovery of the month is Jeff Nichols — I watched 4 of his movies (out of 5), and I liked their quietness and reserve (very refreshing in the modern media landscape). There’s a sense of realness and intimacy to the stories and the characters populating them, even when they’re not quite fleshed out. Bonus: Michael Shannon appears in all of those films, and I now know why he’s hot stuff — there’s something magnetic about his screen presence.
Loving (2016)
A historical drama about a landmark Supreme Court case, with a script that allots 5 minutes to the courtroom proceedings and spends the rest of the time chronicling the minutiae of the protagonists’ life. This isn’t gripping cinema, but it is weirdly immersive.
Shotgun Stories (2007)
A violent revenge tale framed as something melancholy and undramatic: by keeping all the death offscreen & dissecting the everyday foibles of the three redneck-y protagonists (and the awkwardness of their attempts at machismo), this film makes a better case for non-violence than it would have otherwise. I watched it in one sitting, said “huh?”, went to bed, woke up & watched it again.
Midnight Special (2016)
A semi-successful exercise in setting a mood and withholding information from the viewer. Drenched in an 80’s sci-fi vibe, by turns pretentious & understated, with a plot centered around a superpowered child and a thrilling chase leading to a letdown of a destination, it feels like a Stranger Things doppelgänger. I’d love to explore the world and the backstory more: I’m all for “show don’t tell”, but this was way too scarce.
Take Shelter (2011)
A movie whose plot can be interpreted in several different ways — all of them tragic & poetic and working in a tandem of thematic ambiguity. Is this a disaster film, a commentary on the state of world affairs, a critique of masculine pride, a meditation on mental illness? It doesn’t really matter because it is most potent on the basic level of emotion — as a haunting depiction of anxiety and compulsion, one I found relatable and uncomfortable to watch. 10/10.
……….OTHER MOVIES……….
Gangs of New York (2002)
This movie is patently ridiculous, albeit in an enjoyable way: there’s an over-the-top fantasy feel to the onscreen proceedings, which can inspire either eye rolls or fist pumps at any given moment. The world-building and the class politics are engrossing and the side characters colorful, but Leonardo DiCaprio’s bland protagonist and his revenge storyline were hard to care for.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
This was nowhere near as trashy as people made it out to be; rather, it’s an odd (but oddly coherent) mix of toilet humor, painful naivete and pretentious indie-flick philosophizing interspersed with occasional flashes of brilliance — and I would characterize it as intermittently cute. Bonus: the soundtrack is sublime, and — spoiler! — there’s a Big Damn Kiss between the two leads.
A Monster Calls (2016)
A rare case of the movie being better than the book: by streamlining the narrative and letting us spend more time with the protagonist, the film succeeds in fleshing him out and achieves a bigger emotional impact than the novel did. This movie is a bit like a less violent “Pan’s Labyrinth” (I mean that as a giant compliment). Also, the animated fairytale sequences are gorgeous.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
A super-pulpy, style-over-substance sort of affair: the interwoven stories — one “real” (a melodrama), one fictional (a thriller) don’t hold a lot of weight on their own and don’t really amount to more than the sum of their parts when together. On the plus side, the visuals are stunning, the thriller narrative is genuinely disturbing & the film overall is a sly commentary on Nice Guys.
Монах и бес / The Monk and the Demon (2016)
A surrealist tragicomedy in the vein of Gogol, focusing on supernatural happenings at a remote Russian monastery. Once the film switched from mystery to parable, it lost part of its appeal for me — but the ever-present absurdity let it stay interesting even when the message turned overtly religious.
Bug (2006)
Disorienting (in part due to lame editing), low-budget yet ultimately able to elicit (varying) strong emotions in the viewer, from horror to compassion to unintentional laughter. I hesitate to recommend it, but it’s certainly an unusual and memorable film (and very character-driven for the genre).
……….TV……….
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (season 1)
The series amps up the Wes Anderson sensibilities of the books: precocious children! elaborate sets! quirkiness! odd humor! The end result is something that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is thoroughly enjoyable. (My single favorite part, by the way, is Patrick Warburton’s mournful / deadpan narration).
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (season 1)
Plot-wise, it’s nowhere near the genius of the (older) BBC adaptation — but the characters are more engaging and the jokes funnier (weirder?) The Douglas Adams spirit has definitely survived intact.
Adventure Time (season 8, episodes 1-14)
After all these years, this series still feels new and surprising; the two standout episodes of the batch — the trippy “High Strangeness” (featuring aliens, polyamory and PB’s colonial ambitions) and the devastating “Min & Marty” (elaborating on the backstory of Finn’s parents) — were a delight, and the rest vary from okay to good to excellent.
The Legend of Korra (season 4)
This season was basically Princess Mononoke meets mecha movies meets PTSD metaphors meets political thriller (woah). It started off slow, but got better and tenser as it progressed, culminating in a series of epic battles and ending with a groundbreaking romance (...not a spoiler). Also, out of all the seasons, this one had the most charismatic antagonist with the most understandable motives; unusually for a military dictator, she was also a woman — one who managed to be simultaneously ruthless, methodical, attractive & not sexualized. In short, as a representation of a variety of female experiences, TLoK is a game-changer. Bravo!
……….BOOKS……….
The Dumb Waiter (Harold Pinter, 1957)
A must-read for any In Bruges fan, but honestly better experienced as a play and not in written form: the language is deliberately simple and the performances are what give the dialogue the real weight.
Daytripper (Fábio Moon & Gabriel Bá, 2010)
A punch to the gut, a delight for the eyes and good nourishment for the soul: a story of a life told in deaths, with a touch of patented Latin American magic realism. Highly recommended.
