3x06 The Changeling

I respect the Sidhe's long game and adaptability. But I can't help but wonder what they would've done with the one inside Elena, had Sofia successfully brought them Arthur in exchange for ending her exile. Perhaps try to put Elena into place as Uther's second wife? I guess that without a male heir he would be more likely to take a younger wife and try to make one. Tho it's equally likely he'd just try to groom Morgana for the throne and quickly arrange a strategic marriage for her. Why am I even thinking about this

I really do feel for Arthur and Gwen in this ep. It's easy to feel for Gwen, not only will she have to watch the man she lives marry someone else (and a blonde white woman, no less), but she may very well have to perform servant duties for that woman in the future as well. I know it's harder to sympathize with Arthur, but the pressure on him to marry this woman he barely knows and certainly doesn't care for, because it's supposedly good for the kingdom, is undeniable. And he's not entirely wrong when he says Camelot will be better served by him marrying a woman who loves and supports him. The thing is, neither of them actually agreed to the match, they both only acted out of duty and a desire to please their fathers. The scene between Arthur and Gwen was heartbreaking, and I think Angel played Gwen's watching the ceremony really, really well.

I'm a little conflicted rewatching this episode for two reasons; for one, we all love Elena the clumsy princess, and she's well regarded in fanon as such - but in canon, after the Shide is expelled from her, she becomes the picture of elegance and grace, perfectly poised and well groomed. It only lasts for a couple minutes of screen time, which I suppose is why it's so easy to overlook, but I feel like they've attempted to erase exactly what made her so charming. I'm glad that this is mostly ignored in fanon. Her quirkiness is exactly what makes her so likeable, and while it's certainly not explicitly down to her messy hair and wind and inability to walk in heels, it's a little bit hard to tell exactly how much of a paper doll she's become. Even Arthur, in the only time the two of them are actually alone in the episode, seems to have a genuine moment with her, where her awkwardness is something easily sort of forgiven (for lack of a better word) compared to the dismay and disgust he reacts with when they're in the presence of others - which is then (imo) cheapened by the little moment at the end where he notices something 'different' about her. Idk. I guess I thought Elena was slightly romanticized as the clumsy princess, but rewatching it kinda seems like I got that entirely wrong, and that actually she was being presented as actually disgusting and wrong and in dire need of 'fixing' to become more feminine. I still love her anyway, she will forever be my favorite princess in fanon.

The other thing is the Giaus/Grunhilda thing, it's played up for laughs and yes Grunhilda is a fly eating pixie, but it's just a bit icky to me, the way it's played up as like, disgusting for her to be interested in him. It's essentially played as "haha an ugly old woman is attracted to an old man haha omfg so gross haha" and again - while I fully get that it's tied to her being a pixie, I can't help but feel it's a bit mean spirited.

Finally, I just want to say once again, I hate how mean Morgana is to Gwen, it makes zero sense for Morgana to hate her.
