Unfinished Friday: No Questions Asked

I started this one in May of 2022, but I desperately want someone to use this one.

This is a Merlin fic. The basic overview is that Gwaine finds out about Merlin's magic, except he's already known for a while and does not care.

*This is after Lancelot died since I feel like he would have done a lot of this for Merlin and that Merlin would need a new person to lean on after that*

Gwaine knows about Merlin’s magic (not sure why exactly, but it’s fine)

Because of Lance's death, Merlin starts isolating himself and withdrawing from everyone

Eventually, Merlin has to face something terrorizing the outskirts of Camelot and will need a hand

So, he asks Gwaine to help, “No questions asked”

Gwaine just shrugs and goes along with it, not really bother

The pair go off and take down this weird, vaguely unknown creature together (whatever you want it to be) and once it’s down, Gwaine just turns to walk off

Merlin (who just did blatant, obvious magic in front of him): “Aren’t you gonna ask about any of this?”

Gwaine: *shrugs* “You said, ���No questions asked,’ so I won’t.”

Merlin huffs a laugh and smiles a bit

Gwaine: “But there is one thing. I’d like to make a request.”

Merlin braces for the worst

Gwaine: “Call me anytime you do this” gesture to the beast and wreckage “again. I’ll always be there for you, Merlin. Whether it be the strength of my sword or an ear to listen. But I won’t pry for any details. You’re not required to tell me anything. It’s always no questions asked.”

Merlin (wiping away a little tear that leaked): “Yeah, no questions asked.”

I more or less wrote this because Gwaine and Merlin's friendship is special to me, and I desperately wished the show leaned into it more especially after Lancelot dies. Merlin needed someone to rely on who wasn't his mentor or his boss, to a lesser degree. He also needed therapy, but you get what you get in medieval times.

"Since our job's done here, let's go set something on fire, Merlin." "Uh, maybe not set something on fire?" Gwen quickly interrupted with a frown. "I'm on Gwen with this one," Merlin said apologetically. "But Merlin! We haven't set anything on fire this past two weeks!" Merlin winced. "Actually… Lancelot and I already set something on fire." Gwaine pouted with resentment. "Oh, sorry. I should have known that you preferred Lancelot over me." "I don't! I like you both equally!" Gwaine turned away from him, crossing his arms. Merlin shared an exasperated look with Gwen. "Look," Merlin said. "We didn't actually mean to set anything on fire. So you really can't base your statement over that." Gwaine turned back to him with glee. "So does that mean you still haven't intentionally set anything else on fire after we burned that old lord's whole underwear drawer two weeks ago?" "I suppose so." Gwaine snapped his fingers. "That's it. We're going to set something on fire."

Just an entire day where Gwaine and Merlin do pranks and shit for the fun of it while everyone around them either a) runs for their life or b) sighs deeply and disapppointedly

that post “it’s not my fault my love language is acts of service and i’m only good at killing things” or whatever, i know it’s always used for merlin and arthur but i think it suits gwaine as well, maybe not in actuality but in perception. gwaine’s a brawler, not a brute but definitely a fighter. he’s a lover too, by all means, but above that he’s a charmer. you may charm your way to love but gwaine never has, and i think that would stick with him. charming isn’t loving, and gwaine only really knows how to love someone when he’s risking his life for them (like in the case of merlin and percival as well). gwaine has confidence in spades but that means nothing for self-image. we’ve seen that he reserves respect and stoicism for when it’s important, it makes me wonder what his love language really is.
