The United States built the current brick fort in 1822, just seven years after British forces invaded the New Orleans area from the sea, at the close of the War of 1812. It was named Fort Wood in 1827 renamed Fort Macomb in 1851, for General Alexander Macomb, former Chief of Engineers and the second Commanding General of the United States Army. ~Since I haven’t been getting out much lately, I thought I’d share some of my favorite explores from years past. #fortmacomb #fortwood #fort #battleofneworleans #neworleans #urbex #urbexphotography #urbandecay #urbanexploration #urbanexplorers #abandoned #abandonedplaces #forgotten #forgottenplace #riseofthelykins (at Fort Macomb) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_cQIzxA_ZL/?igshid=1iwbsxo5waiwj

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 6 February • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1815, Jean Laffite and his pirates were pardoned by President James Madison for their role against the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Jean Laffite was resentful of the US government, who had previously raided his base on Barataria; therefore many of his men initially refused to assist the United States in their defense of New Orleans against impending British attack. In mid-December of 1814, Laffite met with General Andrew Jackson and offered his services, but only if the US would issue pardons to any of his men who agreed to defend the city; an offer to which Jackson agreed. Many of Lafitte’s men - including his brother Pierre - joined the New Orleans militia, or as sailors to man the ships. Others formed artillery companies that would further aid in defense. As the British advanced on the city, Lafitte’s intimate knowledge of the areas around New Orleans, as well as the ferocity and skill shown by his men, were integral parts of the victory against Great Britain. After the battle, General Jackson released a statement praising his troops’ heroism, making sure to mention Jean and Pierre Laffite, who “exhibited the same courage and fidelity.” Jackson then formally requested clemency for the Laffite’s and any man who had served under them. President Madison made good on his support for clemency with a proclamation. Referring to the Baratarians as citizens who had formerly forgotten their duty to the law, he acknowledged their “sincere penitence” when they agreed to give up smuggling to defend New Orleans. . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #piratesofthecaribbean #piratesofbarataria #jeanlaffite #pierrelaffite #battleofneworleans #neworleans #generaljackson #andrewjackson #nola #barataria https://www.instagram.com/p/CZp1pnmFcII/?utm_medium=tumblr

Jackson Square, New Orleans - After the disgusting smells of puke and sewage from Bourbon Street the night before, this was a refreshing change. The locals kept warning us to stay away from Bourbon Street, that it was just a tourist trap. So that's what we did! We rented a couple bicycles and cruised down to Jackson Square, the real heart of the French Quarter. Named after President Andrew Jackson for his heroic defense of the city during the War of 1812, the park sits in between St. Louis Cathedral and the Mississippi River. Originally built in 1721 as a military plaza, it was later named Jackson Square to celebrate his victory over the British. #MikeDoesHistory #history #education #travel #roadtrip #POTUS #NewOrleans #FrenchQuarter #America #USA #1812 #war #battle #BattleofNewOrleans #Jackson #General #AndrewJackson #StLouis #cathedral (at Jackson Square)

If the probably apocraphal tale is to be believed, miniaturist Jean Francois de la Vallee met Thomas Jefferson in Paris. Concerned about the political climate in France, the artist inquired about opportunities in America. Jefferson purportedly told him the cotton mill was the wave of the future. What is true - Vallee did briefly own a cotton mill in Virginia, before going bankrupt. His next job was running a dancing school in Philadelphia while taking miniatures up and down the East Coast, as far south as Charleston. Earning enough to move on, in 1808, Vallee settled in the French community of New Orleans. There he found the success he had been seeking. His pinnacle was the commission from General Andrew Jackson after the Battle of New Orleans for a miniature to be presented to Louisiana governor Edward Livingston. Old Hickory - who wasn’t yet “Old Hickory” - but was apparently already working on his carefully curated craggy character, is said to have disliked the “Frenchified” image. ****************************** Jean Francois de la Vallee, “Portrait of Andrew Jackson,” 1815, with a note by Jackson presenting the portrait to Governor Livingston. Did you know that Jackson, MS was named after General Andrew Jackson? This was to honor him because of his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Unfortunately, during the American Civil War, Jackson was subsequently burned down. That did not stop Jackson from coming back and becoming known today as the “City of Soul”!

Although 2 wks after the #warof1812 was ended Andrew Jackson fought the decisive battle over the British #onthisday 1815 at the #battleofneworleans here in #stbernardparish then mapped as part of New Orleans. Sadly the #governmentshutdown has dampened local festivities but enjoy your coffee anyway ☕️🇺🇸 https://www.instagram.com/p/BsY8tC8A2zY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16yjbyafgf574
