This is the history book I'm writing. 3 years in the making. But there has never been a more important time to get it out there. White Supremacy is emboldened and on the rise. My book is about resistance to white supremacy. It is a deep history of decolonization. I write to honor those Indigenous people who gave their lives to stop colonization, racism, and slavery. Fort Mims was known as a massacre of white settlers by the Red Stick Muskogee ("Creek") warriors. But it was certainly not the worst massacre. It turns out many of those settlers inside the fort were mixed race, part Native. Red Stick leadership who "took fort with heavy loss" included mixed race warriors as well as black freedom fighters. Muskogee communities were havens from the holocaust of slavery. Meanwhile plantation economies (like Fort Mims and its surrounding Tensaw community) were bringing in new inequality, instability and white domination. Nobody knows how many and which people exactly died at this battle. The Creek War went on a few months until the armed struggle by Red Sticks was defeated by Andrew Jackson at the battle of Horseshoe Bend. This was an active site of resistance. Therefore the monument's claim of massacre is a myth used by the US galvanize public support against "savage" Natives. They would fight for decades after the war to stop land loss. Muskogee and Cherokee leaders who signed away land to whites in the 1820s and 30's before removal were murdered by their people. Finally with the Indian Removal Act, Andrew Jackson violently displaced all natives from the southeast. It was in defiance of the supreme court, despite overwhelming opposition by Natives and allies. 6000 people died on the trails of tears from 1830 to 1850. Red Sticks sought to retain their lifeways and cultures amidst violent invasion. Ultimately, this struggle for land and sovereignty was brutally crushed- Muskogee land is occupied today. If you're interested in this history please follow my Facebook page (link in bio) and my Twitter @samuelorndorff Stay tuned!
