Note
Was the outcome of the battle of the Trident solely dependent on who prevailed in the dual between Robert and Rhaegar? Or perhaps to rephrase it, do we get a sense of the course of the battle independent of these two actors?
We know a little bit. We know that Rhaegar commanded his personal unit, with the other three being commanded by Barristan Selmy, Lewyn Martell, and Jonothor Darry.
The Dornish were on Robert's left flank, which means that Rhaegar placed them on the right. Lyn Corbray's father fell in battle, and Lyn himself took up Lady Forlorn and charged the Dornish lines, slaying the wounded Lewyn Martell. That suggests that the Vale troops, under Jon Arryn, were placed to Robert's left.
Jason Mallister slew three of Rhaegar's bannermen, which means they were either houses of the Narrow Sea or they were houses hand-picked by Rhaegar to serve under his personal command.
Roose Bolton counseled for Barristan to be slain, but given that Robert was present, it doesn't mean much. While Ned says that he was lucky that Barristan didn't find him, this does not necessarily imply that the Northmen faced Barristan's unit. Eddard could have just been speaking figuratively.
We don't know who killed Jonothor Darry, only that he died.
So we have an idea where Robert and Rhaegar were, and where the Vale and Dornish were. The rest is speculative. Given Robert's high regard for Eddard, it's possible he may have given Eddard command of the van, but he also may have formed four armies to match Rhaegar's four armies: under Jon, Hoster, Eddard, and himself.
Thanks for the question, Ekendall.

A Game of Thrones, Daenerys III
“I hit him,” she said, wonder in her voice. Now that it was over, it seemed like some strange dream that she had dreamed.
“Ser Jorah, do you think…he’ll be so angry when he gets back…” She shivered.
“I woke the dragon, didn’t I?”
Ser Jorah snorted. “Can you wake the dead, girl?
“Your brother Rhaegar was the last dragon, and he died on the Trident. Viserys is less than the shadow of a snake.”
His blunt words startled her. It seemed as though all the things she had always believed were suddenly called into question.
“You…you swore him your sword…”
“That I did, girl,” Ser Jorah said. “And if your brother is the shadow of a snake, what does that make his servants?” His voice was bitter.

i cannot imagine that immediately killing Rhaegar was the plan. Robert and Ned both wanted to know where Lyanna was and Rhaegar had the answer. surely they wanted to take him captive and “sharply question him” but, in my opinion, Robert jumped the gun

Consider: Charlie's full Demon Mode properly showing off her Seraphic ancestry. Horns, a flaming halo, and six dragon wings.
XD
the geyser of hellfire from her Demonic Lady Transformation shot right up through heaven's cloud layer and melted the pearly gates, all of hell is screaming in terror as weird tortured shadows skitter across the ground like during a solar eclipse, Charlie's friends are oAo; and running to get out of the flesh-searing heat radius, Lucifer's top hat and coat got blown off and his hair is a Mess, Lilith's up in heaven with a showing off new tan line around her eyes as she lifts her sunglasses to check what the Fuck is going on, Lute's dropping and rolling as her feathers catch fire, Alastor's grin chatters with totally not existential fear, Sera is yelling and forcibly dragging Emily away from getting a closer look-
and Vaggie? vaggie is snuggling that hellborn abomination
probably also gazing up at charlie's full demon face blacklit by an the inferno of an unholy halo and giving her gf the sparkliest anime eye of adoration that creation has ever seen XD

A Game of Thrones, Jon III
“I don’t care,” Jon said. “I don’t care about them and I don’t care about you or Thorne or Benjen Stark or any of it.
“I hate it here. It’s too…it’s cold.”
“Yes. Cold and hard and mean, that’s the Wall, and the men who walk it. Not like the stories your wet nurse told you. Well, piss on the stories and piss on your wet nurse. This is the way it is, and you’re here for life, same as the rest of us.”
“Life,” Jon repeated bitterly. The armorer could talk about life. He’d had one.
He’d only taken the black after he’d lost an arm at the siege of Storm’s End. Before that he’d smithed for Stannis Baratheon, the king’s brother.
He’d seen the Seven Kingdoms from one end to the other; he’d feasted and wenched and fought in a hundred battles.
They said it was Donal Noye who’d forged King Robert’s warhammer, the one that crushed the life from Rhaegar Targaryen on the Trident.
He’d done all the things that Jon would never do, and then when he was old, well past thirty, he’d taken a glancing blow from an axe and the wound had festered until the whole arm had to come off.
Only then, crippled, had Donal Noye come to the Wall, when his life was all but over.
“Yes, life,” Noye said. “A long life or a short one, it’s up to you, Snow.
“The road you’re walking, one of your brothers will slit your throat for you one night.”

Just thinking about Summer being a representation of Bran, the Fisher King. Summer taking several wounds over the course of the story, notably one to the leg just as Bran did. Summer who goes beyond the ice wall to lands of snow (closer to lands of winter) and becomes emaciated…summer getting thinner and being wounded as winter nears/gets stronger. It’s almost like the changing of the seasons. We see that summer journeys to the lands of snow, biding his time before he returns - just as Bran will surely return. The return of Bran meaning the return of the summer. Have to wonder if we’ll see Summer (the direwolf) start to get bigger as spring is ushered in. Winter = death, but Spring = rebirth/growth. And after spring comes summer, when the summer king reigns.
