So, I picked up the manga Batman Justice Buster because I was curious. Briefly, Robin is an AI that Batman has created, and Dick Grayson has (so far) not been taken in by Bruce Wayne. And what do we get?
A Batman that, in his paranoia, prepares to take down Superman. Kind of like that movie from some years ago (that I’ve not seen), I guess.
Conclusion: Batman without Dick Grayson is an over-paranoid, violent jerk with delusions of god-hood…?

I picked up and started reading the "Batman: Justice Busters - vol 1" manga today. I was skeptical at first, but I'm pleasantly surprised and intrigued by the wild turns this origin story is taking. Of course Batman/Bruce Wayne has the typical origin story, but it's the changes in the characters aroundhim that have caught my interest.

Sorry for the quality of the screen shots. Took them just with my phone. Hiding images under a cut for potential spoilers.
Not gonna lie... When I first saw the new Batman suit design, I thought it was a rendition of the Arkham Knight. But it's not.

"Robin" is an AI created by Bruce to help him fight crime? Yeah Bruce. This ain't gonna blow up in your face or anything... Not like you have a history of your Robins rebelling against you or anything in canon... This'll be fine!

THIS was the twist that threw me for a loop! Joker is a vigilante at the start?! And he's actually appreciated and cheered by the public?! What?! I actually really like this twist! This is what hooked me into buying this book.

Oh and there's our baby Dick! Don't know much about him yet, but I'm going to be looking forward to the second book for more of his story.

All in all, a very solid read! Would definitely recommend!

“Superman vs. Meshi,” “Batman: Justice Buster,” and “Joker: One Operation Joker” Manga Getting English Translations
Tumblr media
DC Comics is working on English translations of the Kodansha series of manga books featuring DC characters. Superman vs. Meshi, Batman: Justice Buster, and Joker: One Operation Joker will launch first exclusively on DC Universe Infinite, which is getting an update with a manga-friendly reader. In the fall of 2023, DC will release collected edition of each title as well.
Superman vs. Meshi hails from writer Satoshi Miyagawa and artist Kai Kitago. Superman is a hunger hero and so makes quick stops in Japan to try out a new chain restaurant every day. “Whether it’s a hearty bowl of curry or conveyor-belt sushi, the Man of Steel loves to indulge in the delectable delicacies the country has to offer. He’ll even share a meal with the other members of the Justice League from time to time in the hopes of showing them an incredible culinary experience.” (DC Comics)

Batman: Justice Buster hails from Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi. Batman has only been protecting Gotham for a show time, but since his arrival crime has gotten even more bold and destructive. “As Batman tries to rise to meet these new threats, he develops a computer system, ROBIN, to help him analyze and subdue the rising criminal tide and hopefully one day put an end to crime in Gotham.” (DC Comics)
Tumblr media
Joker: One Operation Joker hails from writer Satoshi Miyagawa and artist Keisuke Gotou. The manga will put the Joker in the role of single father after an encounter with Batman de-ages the hero into a baby. Naturally, the “Joker takes it upon himself to raise the child into the crusader of justice! But does the Clown Prince of Crime really understand what it means to be Batman—or, more importantly, what it means to raise a baby all by yourself?” (DC Comics)

August Wrap Up
Was a reading slump type of month & I already struggle to write reviews. That said, there was an attempt. Graphics above were generated by thestorygraph, a recent feature they got. Username over there is bardic_llama.
Nana to Kaoru Vol 1 [2.5 stars] Nana to Kaoru Vol 2 [2.75 stars]
There was a post on the manga subreddit where someone was asking for recs based off this pic of an anime character tied up w/ rope. But with the caveat of 'no Nana to Kaoru' to which everyone in the comments was clowning on that part. Made me curious + mangadex has all the volumes. That said, no real plans to finish the series.
Like a Butterfly Vol 3 [3.0 stars] Like a Butterfly Vol 4 [4.0 stars] Willa [4.0 stars]
I had a Stephen King phase back in the day during high school and didn’t find out about this short story until after it had ended. I didn’t have high expectations for the story as it was originally published in Playboy. Playboy being Playboy and all. Overall there’s nothing spectacular about it but it’s still enjoyable if you’re looking for a run of the mill horror story and want something that involves being stuck at a train station (crossroads) or something where the characters are interacting more with the setting than they do each other, then I’d say give it a read. Basically literary junk food, a step up from Colleen Hoover.
Batman: Justice Buster Vols 1 & 2 [4.25 stars]
I haven’t read a lot of Batman stuff but there were some small choices made that while perfectly explained within the story, I just didn’t like. Like the Joker’s costume design or making Jason a detective.
Speaking of, they didn’t really do a good job in establishing characters from the jump so I did spend a lot of the reading experience going ‘is this supposed to be Dick? or is this supposed to be Jason?’ Which is made to be a semi-big reveal in vol 2 when the little kid (Dick Grayson) goes to the detective shown investigating the Bruce Wayne’s parents' death in-between chapters (Jason Todd) to learn how to be a detective himself. The confusion heightened as there’s also flashbacks to Bruce’s childhood.
Still enjoyed it despite all this cause the premise of Robin being an AI computer is interesting. Especially when said computer goes rogue. Unfortunately my public library doesn’t have volumes 3 or 4. And all the manga websites only have up to chpt 13 which is the last chpt of vol 2. So will be paused for the time being.

I am 100% sure that teaching your AI that's been trained to think like a criminal everything about the city will in no way bite you in the ass.
