i've said it before and i will say it again but disney seriously just needs to release professional recordings of all their broadway musicals. and anytime they or any other animation studio considers making a live action remake of something they should just make a broadway adaptation instead.

Me: I need to be very careful with Scream Queen's costume design because I need it to be very clear that she's working on a tight budget and is very inexperienced compared to other vigilantes in Gotham. It needs to actually be practical as well as intimidating.
Also Me: I should put claws on her gloves because it looks dope as fuck and it'd be really cool for climbing on buildings and shit. No, I absolutely won't think about the logistics about where she managed to afford a strong enough material to let her actually climb walls.

Tumblr media
i cant help but now give a little side eye to all those adaptions that gave the beast a dead mom and mean dad for added backstory depth

What would be the backstory behind Judge Claude Frollo?
So tip what I’d do is basically just adapt the backstory he had from the book. He and his brother are orphans, taken in by the church, Frollo grows up to be the self righteous judge and his brother Jehan becomes a gambling drinking wastrel. I think the animosity/belief in his own righteousness would grow from Frollo’s relationship with his brother. Jehan’s rebellious actions constantly put their hopes of stability growing up in jeopardy, and young Claude feels superior to him because he’s rewarded for towing the line, and that just sort of builds up overtime to the whole world, eventually turning from “I’m in the right because I’m doing right” to “I’m always in the right”.
Tumblr media
Also I had Jehan be the father of Claudine in my rewrite of her for Canon Descendants, as Claude Frollo deserves to die eternally frustrated.
Since the backstory wasn’t really long I will take this opportunity to drop the little idea I had for my take on a HOND 2 rewrite/better sequel. I was looking over the Disney Villain Recruitors from Tokyo DisneySea—Park only characters that are like new Sidekicks to the villains and wondering how I’d adapt them to the DisneyVerse, and had the idea that Frollo’s Recruiter, Veil, would actually be a demon that’s been sent as his handler basically when he makes a deal in Hell to come back as a revenant to try and get revenge.
Tumblr media
The bell she wears around her neck is his reliquary which’s holds what’s left if his soul—Ala Rasputin from Anastasia—and the plot , which would include a rewrite of Madelline from HOND 2 cuz I like her design and Quasi deserves love to, would probably pull in my rewrites for Zephyr and Claudine as well and have a Medieval Folk Horror flavor over all of it.

We know our man GRRM is fond of Beauty and the Beast, but i wonder if he was influenced for Sandor as well by Phantom of the Opera (another Batb story!). There's a Phantom adaptation which has the Phantom be named "Sandor", and he's not born disfigured, his face is burnt in a fire...And his dead wife has red hair. The film's from 1983 made for tv, obscure. maybe it's a coincidence but..
I checked GRRM's writings and interviews -- using zionius's So Spake Martin Extended search engine, which has everything -- and I'm afraid I can't find any time GRRM has ever even mentioned the Phantom of the Opera. I know sansan Phans have brought up the connection before, but the fact that, yes, POTO is also a beauty and the beast story may just be the simple reason for those shared tropes, sorry. And GRRM has said that Sandor being a real name was unintentional.
Thank you for that info about the 1983 TV movie, though. GRRM did start working in Hollywood in the 80s -- although not until 1985, he had just published The Armageddon Rag in '83 -- but it is possible he saw the movie when it was nationally broadcast on CBS. However, if he did, he's never mentioned it. Perhaps someone sometime could ask him about any perceived POTO connections...

Hi! I really loved the parallels of Ghoulcy and Beauty and the Beast that you’re doing and is it okay if I added one though it might be a stretch? You could almost place Barb in the “Enchantress” role for the story since she’s the one to suggest dropping the bombs, thus breaking Cooper, etc. And if there’s a possibility that Janey is with her mother and in a vault, it would mean that Cooper was forcefully separated and left to “rot” out in the Wasteland, therefore eventually becoming who we now view him as.
I’m really just rambling and it probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I can’t get over how much I like it. Bonus too that there is an adaptation of BATB back in 2014 where the Enchantress was the Beast’s lover before she curses him.
Hi! I agree with what you're saying and I rambled about it on another social media already so I'll just post my thoughts here as well.
In Villeneuve's BatB, the Evil Godmother asks the Prince to marry her but he refuses. In Disney's BatB, the Enchantress, disguised as a beggar, offers the Prince a rose in exchange for shelter. Repulsed by her appearance, he refuses. In both cases, the arrogant Prince is repulsed by the exterior. But in Fallout, it's actually inverted!
Tumblr media
Cooper was deceived by the external image Barb presented and later repulsed by her inner moral degradation. It's all about appearances and what actually lies within, as is the case with BatB. Norm is the one who actually introduces this motif early on by discussing Lucy's husband.
However, we don't immediately get the ugly Beast with a heart of gold. We have two cases about how a beautiful exterior (not only in terms of looks but also how you present yourself to the world) can actually hide an ugly interior. The show portrays this dynamic in the very first episode with Lucy and Monty, making the leitmotif of appearances more complicated.
In Barb's eyes, Cooper is selfish and narrow-minded in his understanding of the world. She implies that he's vain when he mentions the color of Vault-Tec's jumpsuits. He wishes to run away from the city and be a cowboy again, which she sees as running away from responsibility.
She offers him a gift (a place in the Good Vaults) but he rejects it by doubting her. We don't know what happened after he learned the truth but we most definitely know that he didn't end up in a nice Vault, if in any.
Tumblr media
Barb might not have dropped the bombs herself but her character stands for Vault-Tec and its ideals. She literally speaks on behalf of the company. In a way, she put a curse on Cooper and his world, dooming him to roam the Wasteland as the cowboy he so wanted to be with an appearance unbecoming of the actor he once was.

There's an element in many BATB stories that I feel goes a little unnoticed by the general audiences, and it's something lost in the year of white feminism / pearl clutching / Buzzfeed media analysis, that categorizes these stories as "problematic" and in that...when you strip these stories down, these stories are about disabled people finding humanity. Abuse survivors attempting to gain control of life after years of trauma.
I mean it's a bit obvious, but you take out the allegory, the fantastical elements...the Beast is disabled, in a way, that their physical functions can't allow them to function in society.
Like, even Quasimodo is mute. the fantasy isn't even that dense some times lol.
Their abusers (and often the true villains) are often figures in power: parents, religious leaders, politicians...Precisely the type of people in reality that mistreat the disabled in the first place, from abusing at home to passing laws in society that invalidate and downright exterminate their existence.
Like, there's no coinicidence why a lot of these stories shaped the horror genre. and how both genres attract a lot of neurodivergent or queer fans.
So to see these stories being transformed to be thought of "ew creepy incel nice guys" fantasies is so tone deaf. Men dont fantasize being ugly, traumatized and living isolated by society, fam. they like imagining themselves being either the Luke Skywalkers or the world or the Darth Vaders, lol. Something active and with power. (And why Fr*llo in Hunchback isn't the same- he has power and represents society, but that's a talk for another day)
And if you think disabled, deformed, neurodivergent people aren't mistreated, mocked or osctracized anymore...like girl what fairytale you livin' in. i want in lol.
And why these stories hit stronger when the Beast was born a monster (or deformed as a child), instead of a relatively "normal" man committing an accident (but that's just me). Life can be cruel to you just for something you can't control, and a lifetime of pain changes you, not often for the good, but it's real. (and also why that mantra of "abuse turns you kind" can be very very dangerous talk, not all victims respond the same to trauma)
And that's also why BATB adaptations where the Beauty also is an outcast herself (Elisa, Entrapta, Dea, modern adaptations of Esmeralda), and can relate to the Beast's alienation, hit stronger in my eyes. Because compassion is often the key to these stories, and well, who understands your pain better than somebody who's gone through the same thing? (and also why "female monster"-type characters are also very fascinating to read about but also rarer to see ).

An introspective on a once-popular fanfic is inspiring this train of thought...
I love Beauty and the Beast. Both the 1991 movie and the fairy tale. I've seen and read multiple adaptations.
But if you've written the beast character as being a manipulative asshole until literally the last minute, you've failed. Yeah, the 1991 movie has Beast being a jerk the first half of the movie. But Belle doesn't even like him until he's nicer, and he does grow and change as a person, until the Beast we see in the third act is wildly different from the Beast we saw threatening Maurice. In the fairy tale, Beast was always kind to Beauty, keeping her company, talking with her, giving her gifts to make her happy and comfortable. His fearsome appearance stopped mattering to her after Day One because it was the only scary part about him. When she asks to visit her family again, he is initially hesitant, but quickly relents because he sees she's unhappy at being apart from them. And he even says "Here, take all these treasures as gifts to your family, consider it an apology from me for taking you."
There's a reason Belle/Beauty falls for the Beast; despite his appearance, he's kind, he's sweet, he cares about her happiness and wellbeing, he honestly doesn't need that much persuasion to allow her to leave (in the 1991 movie he doesn't need persuasion at all, it's his idea to let her go to her father), he's not a monster despite what his face looks like.
And that's such a big part of the Beauty and the Beast story, and if you fail to get that across then you've failed at writing a BatB adaptation and you've also honestly missed the point of the story.
