i just realized something about what's maybe my favorite kind of dynamic especially in incest fiction (but not only) and how it relates to my love for vampire stories
#vampirism#thinking about this in relation to tokyo babylon...#when subaru realizes that he's fallen in love with seishirou but soon after discovers that their relationship is a lie#and seishirou reveals his plans but he spares subaru because his twin sister sacrificed herself in his stead#then he just leaves. and his absence devastates. and there's nothing that can fill that void#until they meet again years later and seishirou dies by his hands - whispering in his ear that he loved him#which is horrifying as much as it is romantic. because that wasn't a lie. the love was real! but what to make of it?

“Murnau represents and interrogates the perverse pleasure underpinning the littoral zone as a site of an intricate web of intimacy, reciprocity, interconnection, identification and contagion. Mingling attraction and repulsion, Ellen’s disorientating slippage into Otherness is disturbingly and enthrallingly enacted on the seashore, where relations “are ever in multidimensional flux”. Waves of disquiet break on the beach as “secret affinities” eerily emerge from the watery depths. These unpredictable, subversive correspondences, which encompass the telepathic link between Nosferatu and Ellen (and mirror the communication between Dracula and his victims explored in Stoker’s novel), are established by Murnau’s editing, which, Dalle Vacche suggests, is “indebted to the principle of empathy, or Einfühlung, which means literally a ‘feeling into’ another.”
— Julia Biggs, “Haunted Seascapes and Sublime Terror in Murnau’s Nosferatu and Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea”

as i was feeling more motivated, i started reading a gothic novel set in a haunted castle, and i had forgotten how intense situations of imprisonment that heroines usually undergo can be for me. it's not just about feeling dread & terror, but living vicariously through her while there's a sort of projection on my part about how i should behave after long periods of endurance
#personal#i know the strong reactions have to do with how i grew up secluded...#but there's also a sense of awe and wonder when the heroine finally gets the chance to explore the castle by her own#and the freedom that she's granted within the limitations of that space. her curiosity is my curiosity. etc

Just thinking about Will, in this exact moment, hearing and feeling Hannibal's heart pounding and finally knowing the answer to his question, "Is he in love with me?"—that raw certainty hitting him firsthand. Like damn.
