It’s HC time! Under the cut is a growing list of the ones I have for Huxley’s moms because we really don’t know anything about them and I think that’s downright criminal. So I had a lot of fun coming up with these instead. Some of them have shown up in my fics (and they will appear again). 

In three cords, I gave them names: Elena and Lorie.

Elena is based on my mom and all of my aunts/older second and third cousins (who I also call aunts) which basically means she’s Hispanic, a little on the short side, plus-sized, and likes to give everyone cheek kisses. And tries to feed people the second they walk in the door. It’s like a way of welcoming newcomers into the family; if you turn down the offer, it’s almost an offence. When Damien went home with Huxley for New Year’s she made sure to sit him down with a bowl of pozole, which is one of the best meals ever. I based her name on one of my favorite Wheel of Time characters (Elayne, because I think it’s pretty). Out of the two of them, she’s the one with a green thumb. 

Lorie is based on the owner of a crystal shop I mention later in this post, and a family friend. If you take every stoner New Age hippie in the PNW and sprinkle a whole lot of love on top, that’s Lorie. She’s white, also short, keeps her hair tied back in a singular braid and wears a purple bandana, and likes to forage. And knit. A lot of Huxley’s favorite sweaters were made by her. She also spins yarn as a hobby and wire-wraps crystal pendants, which both sell extremely well. 

I know this is a pretty common one, but they have a house out in the woods. You know when you’re on a road trip and driving through the mountains, and sometimes a tiny dirt road breaks off of the highway and there’s a little mail box right there, so you know it leads to someone’s house? It’s like that. The woods are their backyard and Huxley spent a lot of his childhood exploring and running around in the trees. They practically had to drag him inside every evening. 

They own a little rock/crystal shop in town. This one is based on one of my favorite shops that used to be downtown, until they moved locations to the next city over. The one Huxley’s moms own is small and cozy and it smells like incense. They make their own teas too and send Huxley care packages full of new ones for him (and now Damien) to test. 

They have a dog. He’s a big boi. They adopted him when Huxley was little and he’s a black lab named Rocky. Rocky’s a senior citizen now, a tired old man with lots of white on his muzzle, and he likes to lay at their feet and nap. He and Huxley are besties and when he was younger he’d keep Hux company on his woodland adventures. 

Also mentioned in the fic I linked at the top: they aren’t legally married. Neither of them liked the idea that a relationship has to be recognized by any kind of government for it to be taken as legitimate. They did a handfasting ceremony just for themselves out in the woods and the cords are hanging on permanent display in the living room, above the fire place. 

Neither of them understand how video calls work. It doesn’t matter how many times Huxley (and Damien) call, which is once a week. They just don’t get it. They’ll try to flip the camera around so Huxley can see Rocky but like. Not actually flip it, so the view on the phone screen is just really close-up shots of their faces and they’re like “do you see him?? :D” 

At this point Hux just lies and says “yeah I love him <3″

There is absolutely a game where Neil gets slammed into the wall and it dislocates his shoulder, except that the force at which he then hits the court floor is so much that he cleanly gets it popped back in and then he's up like a shot as if nothing happened and all the foxes are just :O and Neil is like :|

And Andrew is in goal just pointing to the court doors with his racket just >:| and Neil slinks out to let Abby look at his shoulder.

hobbies include: close reading the Redwall series to answer my most burning questions. such as:

- can I replicate any of these delicious-sounding foodstuffs and would they in fact be delicious if I was able to

- corollary to the above: are we just supposed to read “oat cream” and “nut cheese” every time we see the words “cream” and “cheese”? I think so. bc if not, what tha hell are their livestock animals

- what is Society like? I don’t think we ever see a Mouse City or even Mouse Town though we do see castles and obviously an abbey. are we supposed to believe that most creatures are either in wandering bands or these societies based around a single structure (castle/abbey?)

- they appear to have an idea of what currency is (the bad guys always want treasure — maybe just to have, not to sell? but less ambiguous is some dialogue I just read, “acorn for your thoughts?” “you can have them for free”) but again, we never see anyone using money or making goods for the market. is this after the fall of Mouse Capitalism? are the bad guys (the idea of rat pirates gives me a headache, vis a vis the political/economic systems needed to power piracy) raiding preindustrial mouse societies for treasure/meat?

- corollary to the above: the abbey creatures have oats and wheat but we don’t see anybody farming or trading for farm goods on a large enough scale. is the abbey “orchard” really a like an indigenous forest farm of mixed foodstuffs? is that possible if you live in the same place the whole year or only if you travel each season? I have to do some googling

- both the lack of mixed-species families and the idea of mixed-species families give me a headache. has a squirrel never fallen for a handsome otter? what is the culture shock like if you marry into a subterranean mole family?

- this is the least “important” question but this read through I’ve been desperately trying to figure out What Size Everything Else Is. i’ve come to the conclusion that everything other than animals are at mouse scale, given that they can make seaworthy vessels their own size (a mouse sized vessel with real-world-sized waves seems impossible) and pick and eat apples and plums. but so far it seems like they’ve avoided mentioning how tall trees are — like a person compared to a tree or a mouse compared to a tree?

There’s not enough people talking about how important Stephanie is to Damian’s growth pre-Flashpoint.

Bruce had seen Damian as a beast to be tamed, Tim sees him as a ticking time bomb, and Dick is far better with him but he’s still an authority figure for Damian to combat with. But then he meets Stephanie, a college-aged girl who nobody trusts and he bullies her relentlessly and becomes inseparable from her.

She doesn’t interact with him based on his past, but on what she can see. This 10 year old just threatened to kill her? Wow he doesn’t get outside much. He’s not old enough to have seen Gremlins. What do you MEAN you’ve never been inside a bouncy house before we are fixing that immediately.

They are like cousins to each other. They poke fun at each other for being lame and stupid and Dick has to tell them both to shut up. She doesn’t see him as a project to be molded and redeemed, he’s just a kid with a crappy childhood like her and if he’s nice to her for 5 seconds she’ll do something with him to let him feel like a kid. And he doesn’t look at her and see a liability or a failure or a lost cause, like everyone she’s ever interacted with does. When he’s awful to her, it’s because he’s an obnoxious preteen boy.

And then you get the “there’s room in our line of work for hope, too” scene. Because Damian has gotten to know Steph and he can’t fathom why she’s here. She obviously has had to deal with crap and is still working through being kept on a leash by Nightwing and Oracle, but she isn’t broken like the rest of them are. Damian is surrounded by people who were molded and shaped and torn down and broken to become the monoliths that they are, and then there’s this girl who seems so at peace with herself and is constantly making quips, and it’s so foreign to him.

And she tells him that she’s in his world because she believes people are worth fighting for.

DPXDC CFAU Headcanon: Ghostspeak Edition

Ghosts in the Infinite Realms who saw Jason and Danny together called them "luzdra", a term in ghost speak that directly translates into the words "shared soul". It's literal definition is; "two ghosts with a bond so deep that it was as if they had split their souls in half and given one to the other", but in general it just means two ghosts with a profound, indescribable bond.

Luzdrus is the singular form of the word, and refers to only one ghost in the bond. While "luzdra" is plural and either refers to both of them together, or the relationship as a whole. It depends on the context of the conversation and who they're saying it to.

There is no romantic, platonic, or familial connotation behind the word. It just means "someone who shares a deep bond with someone" and can be between anyone.

It also does not mean soulmate, and if you say that you'll be corrected. Soulmates implies that their bond was destined by the universe, luzdra are two people who developed and built that bond themselves. It's a relationship forged between two (or more) people.

Some of Danny's rogues -- like Kitty and Johnny, who might've seen the two together and are possibly luzdra themselves -- still call him 'luzdrus' even after Jason's disappearance from the Zone. Danny doesn't know how to feel about it.
