Miles Edgeworth, the world fan favorite, won the poll. It is funny he only won by 0.2% but less countries by the sheer numbers of votes in Asia.
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also super funny because the more Japan related protags (Phoenix and Ryuunosuke) lost in Japan by a lot but won in the west vs the European/American man depending on the version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also funny Apollo won in the US while Ryuunosuke won IN CANADA!
Tumblr media
I will never be over this. What's the aa Canadian community like? Congrats on being correct, I'm so glad he didn't come in last and that individual countries were examined. There really was a campaign for Apollo on English twitter, so u guys kinda won, 😅.
Tumblr media
Surprised they made Apollo say this, but y'know. They do think that. But then still not translate all their games into English, 🙃 (I'm still waiting for you aai duology and Captured Palm Otome).

Masterpost: Visual Kei movies & other types jrockers were involved
So, it came to my attention some of you want to watch more visual kei movies so I thought of listing what I know, in case you've missed any of those. Please feel free to add anything I've missed with reblogs or in the comments.
Thank you @kirk-goes-to-gallifrey for the three movie links! ^^ And thank you @waretamado for helping with the titles of Plastic Tree's movies! Btw most of the vkei only movies must still be available on YT guys, however not all of them will be on HD.
Visual Kei movies:
Seth et Holth (1993) (Hide) YT link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx_laJCEpew)
Moon Child (2003) (Gackt & Hyde)
Verte Aile/Bel Air (1997) (Malice Mizer) YT link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vdd58pTaK8A)

Oresama (2004) (Miyavi) YT link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcBvKQfVKNM)
Soundtrack (2002) (Sugizo) (I don't know if it's a vkei movie but since the theme appears to be music-oriented, I put it here)
Non Visual Kei movies jrockers acted in:
Kagen no Tsuki (2004) (this is a live action of a manga) (Hyde)
There is a movie that Takeru of SuG had played in for only a couple of scenes that was his first ever role, but I forget the name. I remember sth about "blue generation" or sth. If sb remembers it, please put it in the comments. Most people might remember the scene with the fluffy coat, him with blond hair turning to the protagonist with a menacing look, from the distance.
Paracelcus' Homonculus (2015) (this is an artsy film based off a photographer's exhibition) (Takeru of SuG)
Midori: the Camellia girl (2016) (live action of a manga) (Takeru of SuG)
Bunraku (2010) (Gackt)

Karanukan (2018) (Gackt)
Tonde Saitama 1 (2019) & 2 (2023) (Gackt)
Moshimo Tokugawa Ieyasu ga Sori Daijin ni Nattara (2024) (Gackt)
Furin Kazan (2007) (Gackt)
Mr. Brain (2009) (it must have been 1 episode or 2) (Gackt)
Tempest (2011) (Gackt)
Sengoku Basara (2012) (Gackt)
Time Spiral (2014) (Gackt)
BLEACH (2018) (live action) (Miyavi)
Hell Dogs (2022) (Miyavi)
Familia (2023) (Miyavi)
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) (Miyavi)
Kate (2021) (Miyavi)
Stray (2019) (Miyavi)
Unbroken (2014) (Miyavi)
There's a movie with either gangs or bands that Chiyu of SuG played after the disband. Papiko, shed your light cause I don't remember the title.
30-thirty (2000) Hakuei
The Legend of the The Stardust Brothers (1985) (Issay)
溺れる魚 / Drowning Fish (2001) (Izam of Shazna)
Longinus (2004) (more of a short than a full movie I guess) (Atsushi Sakurai)
Other
REPO! The Genetic Opera (2008) (Yoshiki was involved with the music production of this film. Personally I learnt it years after I'd watched it)
Death Trance (2005) (It features many Dir en Grey songs in its soundtracks)
Hamlet (1998) (A rock opera version of the famous play, by Penicillin) YT link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hljXGPsUU1Q)
I hope you can find anything you like and enjoy!

31 Days of Productivity Reading もう一回!: Day 6
Before: Before I spin I want to say that I have a single volume of BASARA left in my collection so there is still a chance that I can land on it again and while that was a bonkers cliffhanger that I ended on last volume, please let’s get some variety in here.
Tumblr media
I WISH I WAS MAKING THIS UP
I’m switching sites. I swear it. Today I read more BASARA, but tomorrow I find a new spinner wheel website. I don’t trust this one.
After: I had such a successful day! My biggest accomplishment was finally going to the Japanese language meet up in my area after saying I was gonna go all summer. I'm horribly shy but the people there were super nice and I had a great time (even if I did get a late start because I sat there not talking to anyone. Thank you Ken San for talking to me and inviting me to join your conversation group even after I fumbled our one on one conversation so badly). In my conversation with Ken San, he asked what manga I like and I mentioned that I'm currently reading BASARA and he said that he had a girlfriend way back when who told him to read it!
Anyways, I also did finish this volume of BASARA and whoever compiled these volumes should be put in jail because wow every single one ends in such a massive cliffhanger. And I can't even continue yet since I don't own any more volumes! I was so scared that my favorite character was going to die this volume, but it didn't happen! I don't have faith that they'll live to the end of the series, but they lived to the end of the volume and that's enough for me. These tankoubon bind ups also have essays from various people who have worked on or been influenced by BASARA over the years and I really enjoyed the essay in this volume. It talked about how girls not only enjoy but want and need stories that have more in depth themes like war, but just because something is darker doesn't mean that it can't also have romance in it. I'm so glad I decided to do this challenge now so that I can move a bunch of manga volumes of my tbr so that I can buy the rest of BASARA sooner haha.
Today I read 290 pages of manga and finished my fifth volume of the month (AND had a conversation in Japanese!)! I'm really feeling good about this challenge, but it also helps that I've been absolutely loving my reads, even if I have only read across two different series. All the other series on my tbr for the month are shorter (in volume length and in amount of volumes that I own), so I won't feel as stuck. I'm a chronic series jumper, so having the same things chosen for me over and over was frustrating when I see it, but once I actually got to reading, I have a spectacular time. I hope the rest of the books that I've chosen, both manga and novels, continue to be winners for me!

I'm curious. What are your top 10 favorite shoujos of all time? (LN, Anime, Manga) Can you rank them from: I'll always love them and I'm very invested with them; to I like them, but I'm not very invested?
(why is it that the second someone asks me for anime recs or listing my fave series, I suddenly forget every series i ever read/watched lmao it is a curse)
Just as a reminder, these are series I either watched recently or remember at the top of my mind because of sheer popularity. Also, my bad in advance if it turns out some of these aren't shojo but shonen (reason I didn't include Skip&Loafer, for example).
With that out of the way, my top 10 fave shojos in order (that I would and have rewatched multiple times):
Revolutionary Girl Utena. A classic. It's got it all: the esthetics, the slightly surreal aspect of the world, the trope deconstruction, tackling rarely addressed issues (such as patriarchy, heteronormativity, the changes puberty brings to a teenage girl, etc.) as well as some... more sensitive ones (there's a reason there's so many trigger warning lists for RGU). Also, the music SLAPS.
SAFT (both anime and LN). Just look at my Sugar Apple Fairy Tale tag. I've liveblogged every episode of this show since I learned of its existence. I was looking forward to the previews. I fell into this head first and it was some of the best experience I had with a series! It was right up my alley: sunshine hardworking girl winning over the people around her thanks to her kindness and optimism + grumpy stoic traumatized man who becomes softer and grows thanks to her set in a semi-fantasy Europe-based world. I liked that both Anne and Shall had to deal with discrimination (Anne as a girl in a male-dominated industry, Shall as a fairy in a human-led society) and how the later LN volumes address those issues (instead of fairy slavery and sexism being just background lore). The show can be really pretty when it wants to, and the music is also very nice.
7th Time Loop (both anime and LN). Just like with SAFT, I'm obsessed. The anime is doing such a good job adapting the source material at a good pace, the quality is great, and the VAs are killing it. The LN also has very tight writing: the author has an eye for adding details that seem unassuming/offhanded at first, but end up being crucial. Rishe's and Arnold's characters and dynamic are phenomenal. Just look at my 7th time loop tag
Akatsuki no Yona (the anime/early corresponding manga arcs).
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at LVL 999.
Ouran High School Host Club (the anime). I'm a sucker for romance, but where OHSHC got me is with its humor. The first episode is a classic, and I will always love the light bulbs scene as each member of the host club figures out Haruhi is a girl. Tamaki is a riot, the perfect blend of goofy, perceptive, and introspective. He deals with some serious issues, but he never lets them drag him down or, at the very least, affect his precious ones. What's great about OHSHC too is the character growth in the second half of the show. The series lures you in thinking it's just a comedic slice of life high school romance only to hit you with some real feels when it reveals its characters' backstories, fears, and reflections.
My Happy Marriage.
Kimi ni Todoke.
Ones for a cute ride: Lovely Complex, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Akagami no Shirayukhime, Donten Ni Warau
Ones I've watched that were good, but lost interest in (mostly due to being too long or me catching up the latest release and not keeping up after): Skip Beat, Fruits Basket, Sailor Moon (the 1990s anime), Niehime
Ones I remember watching but won't ever watch again because I've outgrown the target demographic: Special A, Shugo Chara, Tokyo Mew Mew, Fushigi Yugi, Itazura Kiss
Ones I heard good praise for and want to check someday: Rose of Versailles, Basara, Colette Decides to Die

A Cheat Sheet to Gintama References
Tumblr media
Have you ever said to yourself "I want to get into Gintama, but I want to understand all of the references?"
Well fear not, for I have a cheat sheet for a lot of the references. Not all of them, because I'd never finish this post. But there are a lot of references the series makes, and as non-native Japanese viewers, a lot of things are lost on us. That's not even getting to things that are lost due to the language barrier. So here it is: a (not so) comprehensive list of series that Gintama references!
Manga
Tumblr media
Dragon Ball (Bonus points if it involves dunking on Yamcha.)
Fist of the North Star (Complete with a copyright-friendly version of You Wa Shock!)
Saint Seiya (an entire episode hinges on Gintoki being afraid of getting sued by Toei because of their constant Saint Seiya references)
City Hunter (I wouldn't be surprised if City Hunter was an inspiration for Gintama. Like Gintoki as a main character is what happens if you were to combine Kenshin Himura and Ryo Saeba into a single man. And then you gave said man Kakashi's hair.)
Rurouni Kenshin (Gintama is best described as the post Big 3 answer to Rurouni Kenshin. While One Piece and Shaman King are the true successors to RK, Gintama is the series most similar in terms of aesthetics... minus the modern tech in Meiji-era Japan.)
One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach (I'm folding all three into one line due to their nature as Jump's Big Three. Not helping things is that Gintama ran around the same time as all three.)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventures
Death Note
To Love Ru (Yes, really.)
SKET Dance (Not surprising as SKET Dance mangaka Kenta Shinohara was Sorachi's apprentice at one point)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Lupin III
Golgo 13
Kinnikuman (the thing Ultimate Muscle is based off of)
Doraemon
Sazae-san
Berserk
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K (Ask me about how Gintama helped screw Saiki K out of an English Dub for Season 2)
Anime
Tumblr media
Mobile Suit Gundam (It helps that Sunrise/Bandai Namco Pictures produced the Gintama anime, because there are a lot of Gundam references in particular. You also don't get the Renho arc without Sunrise producing the anime.)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (Specifically the fact that Shinpachi and Tsukuyo's voice actors are in each series respectively)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Especially if it involves MADAO, as MADAO shares a voice actor with Gendo Ikari)
Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and My Neighbor Totoro (I'm highlighting these three Ghibli movies in particular due to how often they are referenced throughout the series.)
The Brave Franchise (Specifically The Brave Express Might Gaine and The King of Braves GaoGaiGar)
Patlabor (Yes really, and SKET Dance is partially to thank for this one)
Video Games
Tumblr media
Dragon Quest (Specifically DQ III & IV, this series gets referenced a lot once Tama is introduced)
Sengoku Basara (Specifically when it involves one Toshiro Hijikata)
Final Fantasy VII
Mother
Super Mario Brothers
Tales Of
Resident Evil
Yakuza/Like a Dragon (Not surprising, as both Like a Dragon and Gintama are set in and around Kabukicho)
Monster Hunter
Live Action Film & Television
Tumblr media
Abarenbo Shogun (SHOGUN KA YO!!!!!)
NHK Taiga Drama (The Shinsengumi drama in particular is a primary influence for Gintama)
Game of Death
Star Wars
Kinpachi-sensei (The series that the Ginpachi-sensei segments are based off of)
Doctor Who
I hope this helps if and when you decide to watch through Gintama. I'll try to update this post as I remember more references or if anyone messages me with a reference that I missed. Because good lord are there a lot of references. Oh, also remember: if this is your first time watching Gintama, start on episode 3. The first two episodes are filler.

Introduction and Blog Info
Well hello hello, and welcome to my humble blog! Come sit with me by the shore and let me tell you about myself.
✧ About Me ✧
You can call me Oliver, Cecil, or Kujira, any of those are fine! My pronouns are he/him. I'm in many fandoms, some well known, and others fairly obcure. I also love whales (which is where my URL comes from). I am a writer, beta-reader and a semi-decent digital artist. As long as I can make my own little guys and share them with others, I'm happy as can be!
✧ My Tags ✧
#icywhaleupdates - updates about my blog
#icywhaleocs - Everything about my OCs!
#icywhaleasks - Any asks sent to this blog will have this tag.
#icywhalethoughts - My general rambles about anything and everything.
#icywhaleart - Drawings and such!
✧ DNI and Similar Matters ✧
I want this blog to be a safe place for fun, so I think most of the things I will say are obvious. I don't tolerate homophobia, transphobia, or other similar things. Same of course goes for sexual things of the illegal nature, and also pro-shipping.
NSFW will not really be present on my blog. I'm ace, so I don't really need that sort of thing. The most that will probably appear is a few shirtless guys (or anatomy practice), or, when it comes to my fanfiction and other stories, simply leave a more passionate scene on an implication. So, if you came here to read something raunchy, I have to disappoint you, only fluff and angst over here!
✧ OC Database ✧
Sunrise (TF IDW1)
✧ Fanfic Masterlist ✧
Here's some stuff I wrote in the past!
✦ Sengoku Basara Imagines ✦
Comfort after a nightmare - Kojūrō, Masamune, Yukimura, Sasuke, Motochika, Keiji, Magoichi
Taking a bullet for your beloved (literally) - Masamune, Nagamasa, Kotarō
Taking care of each other's wounds - Masamune, Sasuke, Kojūrō, Kotarō
You fell first, they fell too late - Magoichi, Mitsunari, Shingen
Dying and not wanting him to see - Kenshin, Yukimura, Motochika

A recommendation for fans of JWQS
The Legend of Basara is a Shoujo manga by Yumi Tamura that was serialized from 1990 - 1998. In total, the manga makes up 28 volumes.
It's an older series but definitely worth a read. I couldn't help but be reminded a lot of Basara while reading JWQS and I wanted to help bring some light to it as a series because of that.
Tumblr media
The story of Basara is set in a post-apocalyptic future where Japan is ruled under the iron fist of a tyrannical king and his four sons. Hope is found in the birth of a young boy named Tatara who is anointed the "Child of Destiny".
Tatara is prophesied to lead the way to a bright future free of the cruel empire they live under and lead to a better life.
Yet, when the village of the "Child of Destiny" is conquered by the Red King, and life of the "Child of Destiny" is taken right in front of everyone's very eyes.
Now, Sarasa, the twin sister of Tatara, witnesses the horror of losing her family and ends up taking the name of her brother, Tatara, and the title of the "Child of Destiny" to avenge her family and fight for freedom and a bright future.
Tumblr media
I will be very light on spoilers here because this is a recommendation post but the story only goes deeper and more complicated from there as Sarasa is forced to conceal her identity and gender to fight to avenge her family.
From the premise alone you can see the parallels between Basara and JWQS.
Sarasa much like Qi Yan assumes a male alter ego. Both heroines are survivors of a massacre and are fighting for the revenge of their families.
Qi Yan and Sarasa have very different personalities though.
Qi Yan is deceptive and scheming, mostly doing her work from the shadows while Sarasa is a soldier fighting a war from the front line. Sarasa is also far more delicate and naive than Qi Yan, whose trauma made her hardened and cold.
Tumblr media
Another similarity is that both are romances centered around enemies to lovers. I will be vague for the sake of spoilers, but Sarasa ends up falling in love with a man who she is not meant to fall in love with. A man who is one of her enemies.
He is the second main character and just as complicated and nuanced as Sarasa. And his relationship with her is very cute and sweet despite the fact they are enemies.
Qi Yan is the same. Someone who fell in love with someone she shouldn't have. Someone who she's supposed to hate. Her enemy.
The dynamics of both couples are very different but both have an added tension because they are "Enemies to Lovers".
So both stories have:
A Strong Female Lead
Cross Dressing To Conceal One's Identity
Being a Sole Survivor
Revenge
Enemies to Lovers
Slow Burn
Angst With A Happy Ending (I swear)
Tumblr media
The main differences between the series would be that Basara is a comic and a hetero-sexual pairing and generally is not as dark or as depressing as JWQS, though it does have its darker moments.
Due to its age, some aspects of representation have not aged well, so you should be mindful that some moments may be uncomfortable to read now.
For content warnings, there are many darker themes touched on in Basara such as: War Crimes, Child Abuse, Kidnapping, Sexual Assault, Slavery.
So please be mindful of this.
Basara is a fun action-adventure story with a lot of world-building and suspense with a really complicated female lead. If you like JWQS I think it's worth giving a try. Sadly the physical editions are out of print but the series is available digitally.

Thank you for reading my post!

MY 2023 FAVOURITES AND 2024 (MANGA) GOALS <3
this summer i got back into reading manga and am surprisingly still going strong! as you can probably see i drift heavily across demographic lines and have no allegiance to any particular genre, but it was josei that pulled me back into this hobby so thank you josei manga <3
my absolute top 10 were: basara, dunmeshi, witch hat atelier, insomniacs after school, hiraeth: journey to the end, books bought with tax, spy x family, tsugumi project, my love mix-up, and blue period
of my 100+ tbr list (fml) i tried to grab a mix of "imminently realizable" (5~30 chapters, complete) and "major time investment" (60~130 chapters, ongoing), as well as a variety of genres and tones
thanks for looking at my silly little blog <3
my end of year manga stats...
90 in-progress 170 completed (incl. some oneshots and single-volume works but i'm not going to get that granular) 55 dropped (i'm picky <3)

* KING OF THE SEAS — !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An independent and selective roleplay blog featuring Sengoku Basara's Chōsokabe Motochika. Re-Est. 12 / 23, Loved & Cherished by Volpe! ♥
Tumblr media
!! — PROCEED BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION — !! Thank you! xoxo
✘ This blog is selective and mutual exclusive. However! As long as you keep your posts trimmed, don’t spam OOC content, have basic information about your muse, and I believe our muses also have a decent chance with connecting, then there’s a good chance I’ll follow you back. I absolutely love original characters and I’m welcome to most fandom muses, so, there's no need to be shy here. ✘ Practice patience with me. I ask that you keep in mind that I’m a busy little bee, and that I also have many other muses that I write for. Though it usually takes me a while to get through replies, know that it’s just a matter of life simply getting in the way. ✘ I will be extremely selective in regards to shipping. I value chemistry involved with any potential romantic interest. Still, if that’s a matter you’d like to discuss in the future after we’ve had some time for our muses to interact, remember that I'm very open to exploring the possibilities. I love a good slow burn and lots of development!
✘ Themes of sexual nature will also appear here from time to time, whether in the form of headcanons or actual threads and so forth. I’m also very open to writing smut, as long as the right circumstances fall into place between our muses. Anything that may contain such themes will be tagged as #not sfw.
And I think that about does it for my rules! A little about myself: I'm Volpe, 27, and I'm a very tired lady. Have questions, want to plot, or simply wish to chat? You’re more than welcome to shoot me a message!\(^▽^)

!Hello! I'm Brazilian, I watch a Brazilian rap anime (Gon x Pitou), I'll love your comment.
I know this is very intrusive, but I wanted to talk to you about more HXH, I love this anime, but it's really hard to find people who like this anime (in Brazil).
!!!Sorry for my english!!! 🙏😓😓💦
Intrusive? No, this is awesome! I'm so happy that my little Internet trail over Brazilian anime geek music has lead you to me. Thank you for reaching out! Your Alluka profile picture is adorable 😊 sending a message your way.
That Gon x Pitou track was sooo good, combining the forces of Mistery and M4rkim. I'm going to recommend it to other English speakers right now. My nerdcore + geek music recs have been a long time coming, so I might as well start them off with a bang!
A tip for my fellow clueless gringos/gringas: go into caption settings on YouTube and auto-translate! They can take a while to load. If you're impatient, go down in the comments and a user 'genesis' has transcribed the lyrics. Translate from there and follow along ^^
youtube
Medonho e sombrio / O ódio consumiu / Uma tormenta em um calmo mar / Ira de um homem gentil!
These lines stuck with me after hearing "Jan Ken Guu" by Kaitou. It's probably a coincidence, but seeing the title of this Pitou and Gon track, Homem Gentil, made me think it was inspired by Kaitou's.
As a bigbig Gon fan, these lines and this title resonate with me so strongly. He's a character often ignored, hated or interpreted in a way that doesn't sit right with me. I sympathise a lot with the little dude, and I find his mindset/morality interesting to analyse. To hear some guys from across the waters interpret my favourite character similarly to me is a nice feeling, even if I understand why Gon is controversial.
M4rkim did the character justice. I knew of M4rkim from his Griffith (Berserk) track and of course, his prior take on our boy Gon. Been a while since he did Caçador and I see the development. Mistery was more new to me, as I had only heard her Pitou track. That was a serious banger. Together? They killed it. This was such a good song.
If my memory hasn't gone bad, I've heard of tracks like this collaboration, Kaitou's "Jan Ken Guu" and Mistery's "Marionette" being called 'movement' type songs. I'm not sure what that means, but they have a shared special something that's interesting to see.
On the series, it's a shame HxH isn't too popular in Brazil. I see the 1999 anime getting a pt-br dub and all the amazing Hunter geek music Gabriza, Tauz, Enygma, Chrono, Kaitou, Basara, D.Y.A, Shiny etc. put out and I assumed it was super loved!
I don't know just how popular it is in England / rest of the UK (where I live) or the West specifically though. It is very highly rated on the website My Anime List, and named a lot when people talk about the best shonen, but One Piece, Naruto, FMAB, MHA and newer generation anime get talked about more I think. Which is a shame :(
Anyway, am so happy you reached out to me. I'm a huge fan of HxH and I love making new friends. A newbie with Brazilian geek music, and only got into it when I found Enygma's Hisoka track near release. Still, it's really cool!
It sucks to be on your own when you're super passionate about something, so I'd be happy to be someone you can share your fangirling with :D
and no worries about the english! understood you, and I think it's pretty awesome for you to reach out in a foreign language (because it can be real intimidating). if you can bear with my shoddy portugese and me using awkward translation tools, I don't mind switching languages to give you a break 💜

😭😭😭 I need an idea to draw but my mind is completely blank.
I'm not an imaginative person so...I want to open THREE request slots 🥺
I can draw characters from Ikemen Sengoku, Samurai Love Ballad: Party and Sengoku Basara (yepp, I'm crazy for Sengoku hottie 👌✨ )
Please tell me ONE character you want me to draw (both male and female characters are fine) plus some ideas for the background. I can draw chibi or a half body illustration. 💃✨
I will do a sketch with simple background.
Here is a sample of a sketch I drew for a friend --> click
I will accept the first three requests. You can either DM me or comment in this post 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️ Thank you so much in advance.
In the mean time, please enjoy this picture of my cat.🐱
