Well gang in light of the new season (which I have just finished) I suppose I’ll give my fairly spoiler-free two cents!

I really liked it. Like, really liked it. I’m about to rewatch it with a friend soon actually, I enjoyed it so much. What a wonderful story they’ve put together for us. I think they maintained the tone and overall vibe of the first season, if maybe softened it around the edges a bit. Loved seeing the new faces and the old. My favorite character, as you may be able to tell by my blog, has always been and will always be Beelzebub and I do have some more slightly specific things to say about the casting change.

First off, I adore Anna Maxwell Martin. After meeting her as Beez in Good Omens, I was totally captivated and watched tons of her interviews and then watched Motherland (which is amazing and you should totally check it out). I love her acting style, and I became very excited to see her as Beelzebub again, especially in the high-stress situation of post-Nope-mageddon. I won’t lie and say I wasn’t absolutely devastated when I found out about the recasting.

With a little spoiling as I can manage, Shelley’s Beelzebub was different, but certainly not bad. My only gripes are that they seemed to have lost some of the intensity and severity and subtleties that I enjoyed from them in season 1, and I don’t think they had the “zzzz” speech quirk anymore, or if they did it wasn’t nearly as pronounced and I didn’t notice it. I miss those things, but there were some scenes with them that I really, really loved that maybe sort of made up for what I missed about Anna.

I suppose I feel a bit like I did when I watched Doctor Who and there was a regeneration. Things changed and it was sad and I suppose I’ll always have a favorite Doctor but I appreciate them all so much. Anna’s Beelzebub may always be my personal favorite, but Shelley Conn did a wonderful job and I’m happy someone was able to pick up the torch and carry on the character.

And that’s that on that for me :)

As gen-AI becomes more normalized (Chappell Roan encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use gen-AI because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by tech companies. I draw not because I want a drawing but because I love the process of drawing. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.

comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously

In a previous post I said that liking clowns gets you mugged in Gotham.

Dick Grayson has made an entire Ph.D level dissertation about how clowns are supposed to work and how the Joker is not a real clown. Including the history of clowning, the importance of jesters, the impact of Marcel Marceau during WWII, and how all of this can lead us to the conclusion that the Joker is an affront to all things clownish. Ending with the statement that Batman makes a better clown.

Gothamites have decided to allow Dick to like clowns, but that he is on thin ice.
