Details:

At first I thought this a frogmouth, but I think the artist was going for a grand bascinet.

Visor with rectangular slits. These are more common on tournament helmets.

Vibe. But also nice polearm

Barding with large brass-looking pieces, a massive bit (ouch), and interesting bridle.

So I’ve got another historical chamfron commission, and I was doing some research on the era and I just found THIS THING --

Jaw dropped.

It’s not the one I’ve been commissioned to make, but holy hell what a feather that would be in my cap. I even have a stamp that would be perfect for doing those scales:

Armoring creatures that were not ment to be armored:

Fantasy Moose Armor

Now you're thinking, let's just slap some horse armor on that sucker and call it a day. And I would. EXCEPT

Historical horse plate has this huge ass PHLANGE on it's chest. And if you were riding a moose into battle, you'd want that moose to use it's natural weapons, right?! And that phlange. THAT PHLANGE is right where the moose's head would cut itself open while absorbing impact during a charge.

Now you'd think, hey maybe just do something like this:

And sure, looks fine, right? (Unfinished paint job aside)

Except. EXCEPT.

Horses, and moose as well, are all shoulder no chest up there. That's why the phlange exists, to protect from strikes from other mountees while allowing the horse to move.

So what are our options?

Ditch the front plate altogether, and hope the lames on the back of the neck is sufficient (leaves the moose vulnerable to pikes, etc.)

Use boiled leather instead. Doesn't solve the issue, but the moose is much less likely to self-injure. (Ironicly, unlike leather armor for adventurers, there is historical evidence for this)

CHAIN MAIL (also historically accurate, although as far as I can tell mixed chain and plate barding was not)

Now clearly, the legs are still the moose's weak point. Best solution? Throw some caparisons and heraldry over that sucker to hide the legs if you absolutely must.
