Dear Diary, Today was a beautiful day at the seaside resort. The weather was perfect, with clear blue skies and a few scattered clouds. I spent most of the day lounging on the beach under one of the colorful umbrellas, soaking up the sun. The beach was bustling with people enjoying the outdoors, some relaxing under the shade of the umbrellas while others were swimming in the sea. I also took a…

eating out now feels very quiet, isolated. even though you are outside.

You seat yourself, scan a qr code for the menu and order. And pay all from your phone. Finish your meal and then clearing the table by bringing your dirty plates to the self service tray area. You only say thank you and exchange smiles to each one staff who bring your food and coffee.

My favourite memory while waitressing part time while finishing my gce is running to tables, small talk with the customer while walking them to the table. Asking about their day. Some times tease their children or compliment the lady’s bracelet. Putting in the order and hear the kitchen staff start to get busy. Walking around the restaurant, just making myself available for any help or assistance. Running back to the small kitchen window when you hear the bell ding. And sometimes, when there is ALOT of order, just between you and your colleagues, we see who can carry the most plates out to the table without any accidents. ☺️ especially when they alphabet a whole round of rice serving , I think my record was 7 or 8..? 7 sounds more accurate 😌

Go around with tap water for the table. Pick out used cutleries from the table. Dirty plates places on the side. Asking the customer for food feedbacks. Running to the back to wash off the remanants of food from your arm. Looking into the mirror to see your coloured contact lensed eye and smiling. Going back out to get some water to hydrate. Nudging the barkeep girl for some sweet drinks or juice.

Was those just better days when earning $1300 was a lot? Or is technology just making people more detached ?

Maybe I’m just lonelier than usual…

Dada Coffee, Bar & Market, 1606 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles (Echo Park), CA 90026

Dada is one of those places that’s so hip that it’s confusing. I’m not hip enough to understand it. It’s a bar/restaurant at night and a market/bodega during the day. The bar is a coffee/espresso bar during the day. I had no idea that there was a coffee bar until I walked into the market. They roast their own coffee (or someone in Little Tokyo roasts it for them) and have drip coffee, cold  brew, and espresso drinks (but no pour over).

The market looks very nice. They sell wine, fresh flowers, a bit of produce, specialty pantry items (e.g., olive oil, pasta, beans, spices, canned fish, flour, broth, tofu, pickles), cured meats, Bub & Grandma’s bread, beverages, crackers, cookies, cereal, etc. You can probably get most of those items at Whole Foods or Erewhon.

At night, they invite interesting musicians to DJ and serve food. The menu actually sounds really good (e.g., yogurt panna cotta, mussels in spicy coconut broth, lamb chops, grilled branzino), but there’s barely any place to sit, so I’m not sure how it would work. There were a few no laptop signs.

party chat #56: nanba's transformation

beneath the scaffolding of a construction site, nanba holds a bottle of tea and asks "hey, you think i've changed at all since we met?"

the rest of the party, standing or crouching on the side of the path, turn to look at him.

"hm? have you?" ichiban tilts his head, hand on chin, and lets saeko pick from his chip bag. "i dunno, lemme think..."

adachi leaps to his feet, splashing his can of beer and surprising saeko. "got it!"

adachi snaps his fingers with a triumphant smile. "you changed how you part your hair!"

"huh?" nanba reaches toward the back of his own head. "nope, it's still the same..." adachi sheds a single tear.

hand raised high, saeko announces "right! your prescription changed!" ichiban taps a canned coffee on his palm in an "i get it!" motion. "what, are you trying to be funny now!? and that's wrong, too!" nanba retorts.

"okay!" han looks serious. "you changed the frames on your glasses!"

"you started wearing contacts instead of glasses!" zhao finger-guns with a grin.

"will you quit it with the glasses thing!?" nanba snaps at an unfazed, juicebox-sipping han. "and does it look like i'm wearing contacts!?" he gestures at himself. zhao smugly bites an onigiri, still squatting on the ground.

adachi frowns around a pocky. "huh? then what's changed?"

"never mind... sheesh." nanba turns his back on the group.

a view of the vending machine and soccer field across the way. "i just thought maybe i'd grown a bit cheerier since i met you guys."

"that's all." nanba doesn't see the party staring in shocked silence.

saeko, han, and zhao exchange fond looks.

nanba chugs his tea as ichiban approaches.

ichiban bumps his drink hand against nanba's.

"well, we already knew that, man." ichiban grins so wide his eyes shut.

"yeah, you smile a lot more than you did before, nan-chan." saeko concurs, offering him her chip bag.

nanba looks up, eyes wide. "ichiban... you guys..."

a hand lands on nanba's shoulder.

arm slung over his friend's back, ichiban cheerfully assures "and i noticed that you got some new lenses on your glasses, too." nanba's face falls.

the party loses it. saeko collapses on adachi, both doubled over in laughter, zhao cackles as his glasses fall off, and han clutches his head in despair.

"i didn't change anything about my glasses!" nanba roars. on the ground, a plastic bag of leftover snacks reads "#56 nanba's transformation".

Remind me, exactly how many of your casts of characters all coexist in the same setting?

While they generally stick to their own lanes, you can kinda think of Sanction (superhero setting), ActiRangers (tokusatsu setting) , and Rumble After Dark (fighting game setting) as all take place loosely in the modern day / near future setting. Meanwhile, The Gingerwood Monster Research setting is a whimsical pseudo-medieval RPG fantasy world that doesn't really crossover with the others. I have a handful of other OCs who I don't draw super much that are a bit unmoored, like Ollie and Velvet.
