The average duration for an empire is 250 years, which puts the United States at an end date of 2026. As we witness more of Project 2025 come into effect, we also witness more of Americans' rights and liberties being stripped away. Reproductive rights for women, access to health care for transpersons, education, access to clean air and water, labor, etc. Empire Down by The Hearse is one of many songs by gothic rock artists that touch upon the end of an empire. Cities in Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees, while also making the top 20 dance charts in the US, illustrates how one's culture can end in an instant. However, it not only ends but is preserved in time, buried in ash to be discovered by later generations. Ozymandias by Sisters of Mercy, based upon the Percy Bysshe Shelley poem, recounts the story of finding ruins of a statue erected to a once great man, whom like his empire, has been lost to time. Empires come and go, often as in the case of Rome, falling to over extending their reach. Alexander the Great lost all that he had conquered as he had not announced an heir. Others fall as they refuse to keep up with the times only to find the rest of the world has left them behind. Yet, new civilizations are born from the ashes, having ideally learned their lessons from past mistakes -- only to forget them again in time. So is the eternal recurrence, like waves crashing and receding on the shore. Neither the best of times or the worst of times last forever. What is high eventually will be brought low. What is low, raised high.

On Gothic
a cute helpful guide on the gothic subculture that no one asked for <3
goth music springing from the late 1970s after the post punk movement was a subculture heavily inspired by the themes found in victorian gothic literature
gothic literature:
frankenstein - mary shelley
dracula - bram stoker
jekyll and hyde - robert stevenson
wuthering heights - emily bronte
rebecca - daphne du maurier
edgar allen poe <3
some keywords that come from gothic literature that can help you spot a goth song:
'dark' 'death' 'black' 'cold' 'heaven' 'hell' 'witches 'bats' 'night' 'roses' 'blood' 'church' 'forest' 'jesus' 'grey' 'horror' 'shadow' 'sacrifice' 'tears' 'ghost' 'spells' 'cry' 'love' 'haunted' 'funeral' 'cathedral'
Some other themes in a song that can help you to decide if it goth or not can be:
heavy bass
synth sounds (the song sounds like it was recorded in an empty church)
mysterious and whimsical vocals
deep vocals
lack of a (electric) guitar
The 1980's and 90's were the peak for the gothic subculture, especially in camden market, london, england
Some bands that were prominent at the time were...
Bauhaus
The Cure
Sisters of Mercy
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Christian Death
Clan of Xymox
The Cramps
Depeche Mode
New Order
Joy Division
Alien Sex Fiend
Fields of the Nephilim
Killing Joke
The Damned
Nick Cave
Softcell
Some other goth band recs:
Boy Harsher
Children on Stun
Earth Calling Angela
Molchat Doma
Forever Grey
Horror Vacui
Lebanon Hanover
London After Midnight
Male Tears
The March Violets
The Merry Thoughts
Paradise Lost
Paralysed Age
Plastique Noir
Rendez Vous
Rosetta Stone
Selofan
She Wants Revenge
Skinny Puppy
Specimen
This Cold Night
Tragic Black
Traitrs
Type O Negative
Twin Tribes
ULTRA SUNN
Xmal Deutschland
Your Funeral
The 69 Eyes
Please let me know which ones i've missed because these are just ones that I have taken from my own playlist!
The music is the number one most important part of goth subculture and you don't have to dress goth to be goth... but it sure is fun to do so! Goth fashion holds its roots in thrifting, upcycling and sustainable fashion (buying 'goth' clothes from shein, dollskill and killstar is a big no no).
Anyone can style their gothic outfits however they like but here are some examples of different styles:
Trad(itional) Goth:
Romantic Goth:
Victorian Goth:
The styles can get very similar so let me know if i’ve mixed any up!
I’ve reached the limit on the number of pictures i can add so here are some more examples of goth styles:
Corporate goth
Gothabilly
Mall Goth
Cyber Goth
J-Goth
Baby Bat
Mopey Goth
Vampire Goth
Steam punk
To end the post i'm circling back to gothic literature by listing some films too (which are often based on the books)
Everyone's beloved: Bela Lugosi in the first adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1931
The Crow 1994 which comes with a song from The Cure
Interview with the Vampire 1994
The Rocky Horror Picture Show 1975
Edward Scissor Hands 1990
The Addams family 1991 (if he's not like gomez then i don't want him)
The Craft 1996
That's all I have for now and if you made it this far thank you so much for reading and have a nice day <3
current goth song on repeat:

Monster Au? (kind of)
**spoilers for Frankenstein??? I guess??** Part Two --- They read Frankenstein in the 9th grade, Freshman English, with their teacher who had read the book far too many times. She’d waxed poetically about injustice, and how Victor was a Victim. She spoke every sentence as if each and everyone of them had never read a book in their life.
Steve read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 7th grade for a book report. His teacher had all but begged him to choose a different option- they read it Freshman year. See it with new eyes then Steve.
His mind was made up. Already 50 pages in.
There was no poor Victor. Steve hated him, hated the idea of his character, hated the very words spilled on the page. The creature did not ask to be created, it did not ask to live. Steve hated that he identified with the creature, someone seeking kindness in a world that hated the idea of him.
Devil, demon, fiend, monster.
Skin Eater, Skin Thief, Skin Stealer, Shapeless.
If Steve was capable of that kind of violence, he’d kill everything his parents loved too. If his parents were even capable of love.
So Steve sat bored out of his mind, and angry. In Freshman English, over a book he’d already read, over a woman, a human woman. Who spun sentences about the Human in the story, and cursed out the creature. As if the creature asked for anything.
Kick the dog, hurt the dog, starve the dog. The kind dog will bite.
Sink teeth into skin, tear flesh, feel the way their jaws lock around the white of bone.
He kept his mouth shut. In ways that the other monsters in the class didn’t, they huffed, and argued. The wolf at the front of the class snapped out about the logistics, the message Mary Shelley was trying to tell- how Victor Frankenstein was not the victim, but the Villain. It was about all the humans who had children with Supernatural, who abandoned them, who cast them aside, who turned the villages against them.
When the Witch at the back of the class snapped out about Shelley was a Witch herself.
Steve kept his mouth shut, when the Vampire boy from the front of the class shouted about how the creature just wished to be loved.
Not a single word for how much he hated Victor passed his lips. Because Steve was supposed to be just as human as the teacher, was supposed to agree with the teacher. A woman he couldn’t even be bothered to remember her name in the Spring Semester.
Steve was to keep his head down on all things monsters, keep his abnormalness to himself- and act like a human.
Freak, Freak, Freak
The Harrington’s were the only Shape-shifters in Hawkins, and that was a well kept secret. Only the Harrington’s were to know this fact. The world had come around to Supernatural in the late 1800s, just maybe.
Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, Gremlins, Fairies, Dragons, Ghosts, Animal Shifters, Sirens, Banshee, you know-
The human shaped kind.
They did not take kindly to Shapeshifters.
So they hid, they curbed their instincts and became human-like. Raised their young in private, they did not fight the oppression, they stayed quiet, and said little to how shape-shifters worked to themselves.
They don’t marry outside of the branch of Shifters, they don’t even think about it.
Steve’s parents married out of necessity. Keep the line of Harrington’s alive. They had Steve out of necessity too. They shouldn’t have, but it’s what it was. His father too scared to break the cycle made sure that Steve was aware he was an abomination.
A devil, demon, a creature.
Be human, don’t be anything else. Steve grew up knowing what his body should need, but never getting it. His “natural” body is already supposed to be thin, small, built for movement, and change.
Steve grew up, not really honestly. He tried to grow up. It took years of monsters, and years of exhaustion, and a skin that was wrong to even begin to grow up. There was no real transition, there was too human, and then too monster-ish.
Too much, too much-
And then there were real monsters. Not the human shaped kind.
Not the Humans. The regulars, the ones with the slurs, and shouting, the human shaped monsters who didn’t like wrong. The ones who were the same as him, who didn’t like themselves either-
Kick the dog, hurt the dog, starve the dog.
The dog bites. --- I, got the writing bug, for something other than my two WIP. So, weird way too much world building Monster Au that I had to get out of my head an on to paper before I lost it completely. Both my sanity, and the idea. (The Au is Steddie, there’s just a, well Lack of Steddie in this. For some reason- probably because I word vomited for 25 minutes- and this was all I could come up with, without writing 10k-) This was born because I’m reading Frankenstein praise be Mary Shelley. And I’ve got far too many thoughts to be allowed to consume media. So Stevie gets to suffer now- It’s okay tho, His Vampire Bf will make it better later down the line- :)

The Subway Sect Mark II shattered after performing their Club Left 'Songs For Sale' set in Paris in 1981 as captured by Sarah Partridge (photo no.1).
So what did punks do after the early days of filth and fury? By ’78, the early UK punk scene was already fracturing: after the Pistols crashed & burned, a fraternity of post punk musicians attempted to break from punk clichés and experiment with non-rock styles, Crass declared that punk was dead, as did Pete Shelley with Buzzcocks entering their pop punk formative phase while street punk and Oi! Bands attempted to redefine punk.
Vic Godard was there right from the very start, since his Subway Sect were among the performers at the legendary 100 Club ’76 Punk Festival sharing the bill with Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Clash and the Sex Pistols.
theguardian.com/ : “Vic, in league with Bernie Rhodes, was thinking of an even more shocking revolt against conventional taste: cocktail jazz. Rhodes persuaded Godard to ditch the original Sect and hired a fresh group of musicians with a little more swing than the original band. One of the first public expressions of this was Club Left, a regular night that ran at the Whisky a Go Go in Soho as the ‘80s began. The idea was to annoy everyone. But this sonic handbrake turn went on to point a lot of music – and a lot of punks – in a very different direction.”
The Clash’s manager Bernard Rhodes recruited keyboardist Dave Collard (photo no.2 by Coneyl Jay), bassist Chris Bostock (photo no.3 by Ian Usher), guitarist Rob Marche (photo no.4) and drummer Sean McLusky (photo no.5), key members of various Bristol groups, who along with Vic Godard formed a new incarnation of Subway Sect with a completely different sound influenced by ’40s-style crooner music mixed with jazz, soul, rockabilly and skiffle, which was referred to as ‘Cool Bop and Swing’. These cool cats, a London ‘Rat Pack’ with Johnny Britton as the regular Club Left DJ, even toured extensively and their refined set became the “Songs for Sale” album.
“I remember looking down from the club’s floor-to-ceiling window one night just before opening, and seeing a queue stretching round the corner into Shaftesbury Avenue. We attracted an amazingly eclectic crowd, and you never knew who would turn up together with our hard-core regulars…”. Rob Marche “Club Left hosted a weekly array of great performers. If it had an ethos, it was a simple nod to the Beatnik past of Soho and Paris of the 60's”. Sean McLusky
The far-retro Club Left project reintroduced various people to easy listening. Artists such as Sade or the group of young women, who had supplied occasional backing vocals for the likes of Shane McGowan’s first band, the Nipple Erectors, and went on to become Bananarama. When Vic Godard got married and took a break from music in ’82, the rest of the band with the addition of Dig Wayne became the JoBoxers, fusing elements of northern soul, rockabilly, NY disco and funk.

ranking actors by how good of a job they did in teen wolf: the movie
1. vince ATE. this was HIS MOVIE. it didn’t matter that he was new. it didn’t matter that i only kind of liked his character. he showed up like rent was due, playing injured and desperate and needing to please just like the original teen wolf.
2. holland never misses. from her hurt watching allison fight, to her soft looks with scott, to her using her banshee powers. she stepped back into being lydia martin like no time had passed.
3. tyler hoechlin. my life, my love. he didn’t get a lot of emotional range with his scenes which is why he isn’t higher, but i have no doubt he had the potential to do it. he was the same as i remember him, but also had those small changes just from him having a kid and growing up.
4. colton did a great job, but also he was basically playing himself. no real acting was done, but it was believable and entertaining, so i’m still counting it.
5. tyler posey can play scott so well. but he was too excited to be in the movie that he couldn’t really play anything but wistful and earnest.
6. it feels odd to put linden here because he had such a small role, but i love this man and his character so we’re doing it anyway. he did such a great job as the sheriff and still playing dad to all of the kids even though they’re now grown. however, his sassy side left with stiles and i will never forgive him (but mostly the writers tbh) for that.
7. ian bohen had such a strong entrance and then… nothing. i don’t know what was up but he just stopped acting half way through the movie. also props for sniffing and crawling on all fours with a straight face.
8. ryan played parrish so two dimensional the whole movie. malia comments on a look he gives and he’s just there like “what look 🧍🏼♂️”
9. i love shelley hennig. i really do. but they’re trying to give malia depth and she refuses to lean into it. she’s going to date parrish after this, and she doesn’t even seem to really like him.
10. jr bourne. WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU MAN. if there was one thing i could count on it was that man and he turned into some like poetic hipster with residual soldier in him.
11. crystal reed did a great job acting. that’s not arguable. the realization when her memories come back, the soft looks scott, the inner turmoil. that being said… she didn’t do a good job of being allison. her expressions weren’t as full and dynamic as they were in the show and it didn’t give her the same energy. she might as well have been a different character for me.
other comments:
- amy workman (the girl who played hikari) had very little range, but they downplayed her brand new character and this is her first movie role, so no hate to her, she got thrown in the deep end.
- melissa wasn’t in it for me to comment on anything. not her fault though, im so sorry they did you so dirty ma’am. same with dylan and khylin. i know they would’ve stolen the show.
#heads up i’m a bitch in this#i mean you can probably tell by the title#but im right and all of you know it#thank you lauren for coming on this journey with me#teen wolf#teen wolf movie

🍄❄️ 🦴 gday banshee
DJ!!! Afternooon <3
🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
Oh god uh. I love the idea of Sakura & Ino keeping their competitiveness even when they get together! With much less vitriol involved, of course, but like. Competing over who's team will pass the Chuunin exams first when they're both Jounin instructors - stuff like that.
❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?
SO this depends on the fandom! For BNHA which I don't read a huge amount for anymore I love stories that deal with Izuku's stalkerish tendencies! I don't really have a dream author I think, because I've read a few already and most of them were great! I'd just like to see more.
For ATEEZ I just want more fics that deal with the lore! More specifically: I don't like the direction the lore headed with Golden Hour, and so I'd love to see a fic that took the lore the direction I thought it was going to head - with ATEEZ heading back to World A after destroying the chromer & immediately trying to figure out how to prevent World A from becoming World Z. Like, okay, I know this was unrealistic because this IS coming from a corporation and what corporation would ever write actual rebellion and anarchy in a way that actually works, but I had hopes!! I have no real dream writer for this either, mainly because I have already internalised that if I want to read this I'm going to have to write it myself.
Oh also Gothic horror. I'd just love to see more people writing Gothic horror in general.
🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?
Oh, SO many. You have opened pandora's box.
Music/MVS: - Sweet Juice, Purple KIss - Phantom, WayV - Don't Stop, Ateez (unfortunately this MV only exists in 480p now) - Halazia, Ateez - The World Ep.1: Movement, Ateez - Guilty, Taemin - Blood, Sweat & Tears, BTS - Deja Vu, Dreamcatcher - Chill Kill, Red Velvet - Animal Farm, Bibi - Grand Romantic Life, Mom Rock - Don't You Dare Forget The Sun, Get Scared - Cradle, The Joy Formidable - Thumbs, Sabrina Carpenter - Six Feet, Patent Pending
Books: - The Gloaming, Kirsty Logan - Wilder Girls, Rory Power - The Raven Cycle, Maggie Stiefvater - The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien - Frankenstein, Mary Shelley - Dragonsbane, Patricia C. Wrede - The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
Shows/Movies: - Addams Family (original tv series + 1990s movies) - The Magicians - The Untamed - The Sandman - The Witcher - All Of Us Are Dead - Castlevania - Derry Girls - Hotel del Luna - Spirited Away - Princess Mononoke - She-ra - Violet Evergarden
Misc: - Betrayal at the House on the Hill (board game) - Outlaw Kings and Rebellion Chic by Alister MacQuarrie - The poetry of Siegfried Sassoon, but especially Glory of Women and The Hero
All of this is just off the top of my head, or stuff I could look over at my bookshelf and go "oh yeah, that" about. I'm sure there's a lot more that's inspired me in my life, including probably half of the stuff we read and watched in high school — The Great Gatsby, Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Macbeth etc — but this is the stuff memorable enough to stay with me!
There's also an incredibly large amount of fanfiction that changed my life once I read it, and so many that I've literally sent to friends with the caption "I want to write like this". So to other fanfic authors: I love you.
Writers truth or dare asks!

@ailesswhumptober day 19: taken for granted / left behind / "why wasn't i enough?"
[angsty charlie pov of 15x08, the gang carries a corpse up a mountain]
the gang falls for charlie's ruse to take a hike with his dad, so his day is off to a great start. shelley kelly can't really walk up the mountain with the rest of them, but that's fine; the gang will help carry him. everyone takes a step back when charlie opens the body bag, which is weird, 'cause it's not like shelley is a zombie or anything, he's just dead.
"absolutely not!"
"this is a crazy idea, charlie, a crazy idea, and i'm not doing it."
the seagulls and waves crashing on the rocks below them distract charlie for a minute. he's not entirely sure what everyone's complaining about, 'cause this is a simple thing. mac not understanding makes sense, 'cause mac is kinda stupid. frank's just kinda there most of the time until they need him, and dee knows nothing, stupid bird. but dennis is smart, probably the smartest guy charlie knows, so why isn't he following charlie's plan?
"we're just gonna carry the man up the mountain, and then chuck him over the side." it's really not that difficult to understand, but mac and dennis keep bickering, so charlie does the only thing left to do and plays the 'bros before hoes' card. it works on them and frank, and even on dee, so everything's back on track.
everything's great, until it's not. the gang can't even go five minutes without complaining, which is normal, that's fine, but the weight of shelley in the bag is kinda distracting, and then everyone freaking drops him. they have one job, one, and charlie never asks them to do charlie work, not ever, but this probably counts as charlie work so of course he's meant to do it alone.
this is worse than the chicken inspection thing, and the waitress telling him to stay away. it's worse than always losing chardee macdennis, and being left at the zoo, and not having christmas presents, and his play getting ruined and nobody ever listening to him, ever.
dee's the one who killed shelley with her stupid banshee curse, but she's leaving now 'cause dennis fried a castle or something, so now it's just the guys. then dennis trips on nothing, and the bag feels lighter, because dennis is a bastard man who used charlie's dead dad to pull himself up the mountain. mac throws the body bag down, and frank keeps talking and talking about resourcing things, so they end up putting shelley's bag in frank's tent and pulling him up the hill.
they pull him up, and then mac kicks him and the bag tumbles down the hill, and it looks like it's going to keep falling forever. mac talks and talks about being dutch, so charlie snaps because mac's not dutch, he's just annoying as shit, but then mac leaves him with frank and dennis and the scrambled remains of shelley kelly.
dennis and frank keep dropping him, and dennis keeps telling him they should chop up the body, because dennis has a thing about cutting people and that's a whole other pile of worms to sort through that they don't have time for right now, and then dennis tells him that shelley died from the banshee curse and covid, and that's not fair, it's not. banshee curses are serious things, and covid's not so good either, but both is a lot for just one cheese monster to handle, so of course they overpowered shelley.
dennis says it's not like he gave him covid, even though he's the only one in the gang who didn't get the shot, but then frank starts talking about horse medicines and sea creatures and then dennis leaves, muttering about men from venus.
dee leaving was nothing; she's always doing her own thing, and being around her for too long makes charlie's skin itch, anyway. mac leaving hurt more, 'cause he's mac; he's supposed to stay with charlie, or at least with dennis. dennis walking away hurts in ways charlie doesn't even have pictures for.
charlie forgives frank for killing his dad, 'cause a kelly always forgives, but then frank gives him a canteen of piss and charlie wishes he didn't forgive him, even though he said it was gatorade. but then frank gives him another canteen of piss instead of gatorade, and there's nothing left to drink, 'cause mac drank all the spritzers, and that's it.
charlie's thirsty, and his feet ache, and no one's helping him, anyway, so he's better off doing this by himself.
"i'm gonna do this alone, frank. i don't need your help! i don't need you!"
frank doesn't even try to follow him as he drags the bag further up the mountain.
it starts to rain, but that's fine. the body is in a bag, and the bag's in a tent, and it's all messed up, anyway. even if it gets wet, it's not gonna make things worse. he's charlie, this is charlie work, so he can handle it. he's a kelly, and this is a kelly family tradition, so he's gonna handle it.
it's pouring, now, and the seagulls and the waves add to the loudness around him, but it's not loud enough. without the gang yelling and fighting about whatever bullshit pops into their heads, charlie's stuck with all the bullshit in his head. he's only one guy and he doesn't have a big head, so why is there so much?
the ground is muddy, and charlie slips, falling nearly on his face. he lays there for a while, 'cause he really is just a dirt grub, but pulls himself up to sit on his knees when the puddle starts to taste bad.
"i can't do this," he mutters. "i can't do it!"
charlie's head starts to feel better, lighter, when he yells, so he keeps yelling. it doesn't matter that there's no one listening, or that the wind and the rain carry his words away. the yelling feels good, and he's felt so, so bad lately - nothing good ever happens when he leaves philly.
"it's not fair! i shouldn't have to carry you up this hill! you never carried me up a hill! you never carried me at all! you never picked me up and showed me the letters and read me bedtime stories, you never threw rocks with me at christmas, you never showed me how to bash rats or make milk steak or fight the nightman or patch up my jacket! you never played basketball with me or took me to the dump to find treasure! you never sang me happy birthday, you never took me to an eagles game, 'cause you weren't there! you need me here, to be enough of a kelly to carry you up a fucking mountain, but i needed you and you were never there for me."
tears mix with the rain on charlie's face, but it doesn't matter that he's crying. no one's there to listen to him, to make fun of him, to tell him to just get over it and get back to cleaning up and making crazy schemes for everyone else.
"you were never there for me. you left me, and i needed you there. what's wrong with me? why wasn't i enough for you to stay?" charlie's voice breaks as he sobs and shakes.
"you were supposed to carry me," charlie whispers, falling onto the body bag and hitting it with his fists. "you were supposed to carry me."

The Influence of Gothic Culture on Modern Music
Gothic culture, with its dark, brooding aesthetic and profound thematic depth, has left an indelible mark on modern music. Emerging from the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, gothic culture has developed to become a powerful force, influencing various genres, from gothic rock to darkwave, metal, and even electronic music. This article delves into the profound impact of gothic culture on modern music, exploring its roots, key influences, and its enduring legacy.
Origins and Evolution
Gothic culture finds its roots in the gothic rock scene, spearheaded by bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure. These pioneers crafted a sound characterized by melancholic melodies, haunting lyrics, and a dark, atmospheric aesthetic. Their music, imbued with themes of existential dread, love and loss, and the macabre, set the stage for a cultural movement that would transcend music.
As gothic culture developed, it embraced elements from other genres. The ethereal wave brought a more ambient and dreamlike quality, while darkwave combined gothic rock's intensity with electronic music's hypnotic rhythms. This fusion of sounds and styles allowed gothic culture to permeate various musical landscapes, creating a diverse and ever-developing genre.
Key Influences
Thematic Depth: At the heart of gothic music lies a deep exploration of themes often shunned by mainstream culture. Existential angst, spiritual isolation, and the beauty found in darkness are common motifs. These themes resonate deeply with listeners seeking a more profound connection with music that mirrors their inner turmoil and reflective nature.
Aesthetic and Imagery: Gothic culture's visual aesthetic—marked by dark clothing, elaborate makeup, and a penchant for the theatrical—has influenced modern music's presentation. Artists like Marilyn Manson and Evanescence have adopted gothic visual elements to complement their music, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for their audience.
Literary Inspiration: Gothic literature, from the works of Edgar Allan Poe to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," has been a significant source of inspiration for gothic musicians. The storytelling aspect of gothic literature, with its rich, atmospheric descriptions and complex characters, translates seamlessly into the lyrical and conceptual aspects of gothic music.
Modern Gothic Music
Today, the influence of gothic culture is evident in the works of artists across various genres. Bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation have melded gothic aesthetics with symphonic metal, creating grandiose soundscapes that evoke both beauty and despair. Electronic artists such as Gary Numan and Depeche Mode have incorporated dark, gothic elements into their synth-driven music, proving the genre's versatility.
The rise of neoclassical darkwave, spearheaded by acts like Dead Can Dance, has brought a new dimension to gothic music, blending classical influences with haunting, ethereal sounds. This genre's fusion of ancient and modern elements exemplifies gothic culture's ability to adapt and evolve while maintaining its core essence.
The Enduring Legacy
The enduring appeal of gothic culture in modern music lies in its ability to provide an emotional outlet and a sense of community for those who feel marginalized or disconnected from mainstream society. Its themes of existential reflection and spiritual exploration resonate across generations, offering solace and understanding to listeners.
Moreover, the visual and thematic richness of gothic culture continues to inspire artists to push boundaries and explore new creative territories. As music continues to evolve, the shadows cast by gothic culture will undoubtedly continue to shape and influence the artistic landscape.
In conclusion, the influence of gothic culture on modern music is because of its profound emotional depth and aesthetic power. From its origins in gothic rock to its pervasive presence across multiple genres, gothic culture remains a vital and transformative force in the world of music. Its ability to evoke deep emotions, challenge societal norms, and inspire artistic innovation ensures that the gothic spirit will endure, resonating through the shadows of modern music for years to come.

currently reading: just finished Jessie Burton's The House of Fortune, it was ok! I felt similarly about The Miniaturist but cared about the characters just enough to want to know what happened next. Will probably start Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt next and I am sooooooooooo excited for that even though I'm sure it will hurt me
last song: fka twigs - papi bones (feat. Shygirl)
last movie: Banshees of Inisherin! It was great!!! genuinely some of my favourite uses of landscape/animal actors in film ever. that said I still have the movie itch so will probably watch something else today or tomorrow, it's my pick for movie night and I am feeling either Shiva Baby or Orlando
currently working on: ugh ew i've been doing lots of little shitty annoying jobs today. the more enjoyable stuff however has been rereading Wordsworth's 'Tintern Abbey' and Shelley's 'Mont Blanc', had really forgotten how much I enjoy the latter and I really hope my students enjoy it when we cover it in a few weeks 🥺
