cute thing I noticed about Charles: French doesn’t pronounce the letter H in words (not sure how often this is a rule) so obviously he probably had to work on saying Hs in English but he even says the H in “honest” 🥺

Could I request headcanons for Scarabia + Pomefiore where they overhear their lover speaking in their native language with is neither japanese or english? Maybe they're cussing, maybe just talking to themselves, maybe singing, whatever. Here are the characters + some language samples:
Jamil - bangla: https://youtube.com/shorts/WF2LbzJDzD4?si=11V-UicSCLv8vySx
Kalim - mandarin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iUCZgObUDg&t=106s
Rook - egyptian arabic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsz0ou4VX2g
Vil - swahili: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpol4TKeJ14
Epel - welsh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufKf4eORcKA
So sorry it took me a while to get around to this request, I've had it gathering dust in my drafts as I brainstormed ideas for it, hehe!
︶︶︶︶༉‧₊˚
Jamil Viper
Jamil's first introduction to your language was when you burned yourself in the Scarabia kitchen. Touching a hot pot before he could warn you that it contained boiling soup, you cried out a foreign phrase to him
"Hauar pola!" You screamed, one hand clamping over your injured palm, applying pressure as you glared at the pot "Magir Puth!"
Despite his fretting noises as he grabbed the nearest first aid kit (of course with Kalim, Jamil had made sure there was a pack in every room) and fixed your hand, Jamil had to hide his laughter. He had just assumed that you were making up gibberish like Kalim used to do as a kid- gibberish to take place of curse words.
Once you explained to him that it was indeed an actual curse, in your mother tongue, he was a bit shocked. You mean you didn't originally speak what you were speaking now??
He'll definitely ask you to teach him some words in Bangla- mainly curse words, but if he can get his hands on a book for the language, he'll attempt to learn some "sweeter" words to use with you, if only to get a little bit closer to you...or make you feel closer to home.
Kalim Al-Asim
He's no stranger to different languages! Being in a merchant family, knowing many different languages was essential to business, and Kalim has had so many tutors teaching him so many languages- he's not entirely fluent in all of them since he never gets a chance to speak them, but he knows all the basics to have a simple conversation
He probably knew that you didn't originally speak the current language that you did in Twisted Wonderland, but hadn't really heard you speak in this "Mandarin" before.
But one day, while prepping for a party, he took a small break to ask you to show him a new dance- he wasn't particularly set on what sort of dance you showed him, he just wanted some new moves to use while dancing at the party.
To his utter delight, you grabbed his hands and tried to teach him a little dance that went to an old song you heard in your childhood- of course, since your song didn't really exist in this world, you had to hum and sing it out loud.
He's definitely going to insist that you not only teach him the song, but that you start giving him lessons on your language! He figures it'll be fun to converse to you in Mandarin, allowing the two of you to have conversations in secret, where no one else knows what you guys are talking about!
Rook Hunt
Ooh, la la!
He's going to run into you whilst you're in the library after class! You were sitting at one of the tables, half-closed eyes scanning over a textbook. Of course, you hadn't been getting too much sleep recently, so it was hard for you to actually read and digest the information you were supposed to. Which led to you mumbling to yourself instead in Egyptian Araibic under your breath.
Of course, Rook doesn't greet you at first, preferring to stay back and listen to your voice for a little while longer. He enjoys the cadence of it, the highs and lows of every word...it is truly beautiful for a language, is it not?
Once he helps you get to bed and can speak to you after a good night's rest, Rook inquires as to what you were saying earlier.
To hearing you say that you spoke a different language than this one, he was flabbergasted, but intrigued.
"Read me a poem in your own words, dear, in your mother tongue! Speak your mind, call me curses, list out your errand runs, just allow me to hear you speak once more!"
He's...strange. But he enjoys the foreign language very much
Vil Shoenheit
Hearing you sing to yourself while having a spa day with Vil left him speechless, for once in his life.
He had left you alone in the bathroom to soak in the warm, bubbling water, assuring you that he would be right back once he found a certain brand of oil that he suspected Rook had mistook as his.
Once he came back to the bathroom, your words sounded so...alluring. It made his hips sway with the beat you put out with a fist slapping the side of the porcelain tub. It was rather catchy, and he couldn't help but smile as he nodded his head to your tune.
"Oh, such a wonderful language, what is it?"
He's so genuinely curious about it all, and enjoys listening to you speak about it all- how you grew up, how you felt about your culture and language itself.
And don't worry, he'll be asking you to sing to him a lot more heheh
Epel Felmier
Another curser! Aah!
Epel absolutely loves the sounds coming out of your mouth as you lose your temper and let loose at another student bothering you in the courtyard, but curbs his excitement until he properly threatens the student with a good lickin' if he doesn't scoot out!
I'm not gonna lie, Epel seems like he'd speak Welsh if he weren't in Twisted Wonderland- it just seems to fit his character so well.
And, of course, he's going to ask you to teach him all of the swear you know, so that Epel can voice his grievances against Vil and some teachers without them being able to get mad at him (because, of course, Welsh isn't technically an existant language in Twisted Wonderland, soooooo the teachers/Vil can't prove it even exists unless you become a tattle-tail, hehe!)
Once he has his fun with cursing, Epel will try his best to learn some simple words/phrases from you so he can pass you secret notes in class and talk to you in private. He's...not the best at learning a new language, so be patient with him, but he's trying his hardest!

i write, sometimes
thank you @citrusses for the tag!
how many works do you have on ao3? 17
what's your total ao3 word count? 234k (since WHEN)
your top 5 stories by kudos? — all drarry
you are safe (i know) (e, 42.5k)
though your world is changing (e, 16k)
it's you (e, 1.2k)
dinner and diatribes (e, 4.8k)
my hands are of your colour (e, 8k)
do you respond to comments? i... try
what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? ebyt is the obvious answer, but i think my other bite-sized mcd is sadder: nothing to declare here (t, 1k)
what's the fic you've written with the happiest ending? in retrospect, most of my endings are kind of fucked up, and i think dinner and diatribes is simplest in its offering of stable love & care.
do you write crossovers? i don't, it doesn't really interest me, but never say never!
have you ever received hate on a fic? though your world is changing often gets me called an infidelity apologist (uh.) + everyone seems to hate harry in that one (fair fucks). ebyt sometimes gets some "but WHY didn't they just TALK, author?" (fair, but also. uh.) nothing egregious, though
do you write smut? copying cits: often, and with great joy
have you ever had a fic stolen? couple uploaded to goodreads to be rated, but not wholesale thieving that i know of
have you ever had a fic translated? not yet, but huge shoutout to translators out there, it's such a labour of love and access!
have you ever co-written a fic before? no, and i don't know if i could? but again, never say never!
what's your all-time favorite ship? stupid wizard boys (pynch comes v close though)
what's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? i love all my wips! i don't want to relegate any to the "never finish" category. my 50s/60s drarry photography fic is probably the most de-prioritised one right now? there's also a storyboard i once made for a case-fic where chef!draco is framed (or is he?) for poisoning the british minister during a diplomatic visit to romania, but that's really not a wip, i never put a word of that on the page. inspiration is a flighty thing though, who knows when it'll strike for what
what are your writing strengths? uh. uh? don't know how to judge this myself, but i think atmosphere is what i care for most & have sharpened skills to write accordingly
what are your writing weaknesses? many, but i suck at narrative humour especially, which is a travesty because i'd really like to write situational hilarity. also REALLY struggle with dialogue
what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? i haven't done this yet & don't know if i'd feel super comfortable if i didn't have some familiarity with the language (though if a fic calls for it, i'd do my best to approach someone who does know the language to help me out). i might use the indian languages i know (hindi & bangla) if i ever write the india sequence follow-up to my erised, and my werewolf anti-ministry wip might put my very rudimentary german to use at some point. i do love it when a fic uses different languages to serve a narrative/experiential purpose though!
what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? trc! i'd love to write a pynch fic someday, once i've done a reread of the original four.
what's your favorite fic you've ever written? the dronarry fest fic i'm currently writing has been quite fun and new, the jeddy fic i'm currently writing also exorcises some nasty demons and is a delight to work on. i don't know if anything in my already published stuff really qualifies as a favourite (they either signal really difficult periods in my life and/or just aren't up to my current standards), but nothing to declare here, again, was short, sad & experimental, and close to four years later, i wouldn't change much about it.
i don't know who's done this, but paging @flightspathfic, @kamaela, @desertforestfic, @sleepstxtic, @phoebe-delia to tell me everything. and if you have already done it, let me know in the comments so i can go peer in your windows.

Tip for anyone with Microsoft Edge browser learning a foreign language:
If you right-click on any word or highlight some text online, you can open it in 'Immersive Reader mode'.
It simplifies absolutely everything on the page for you, providing only text, for a distraction-free reading environment! You can copy individual paragraphs or sentences, or whole articles.
Tumblr media
I'm showing the side of the margin to show how wide the narrow one is!
You can then control the size of the text, from small to very large, how wise the column of the text is, the background colour (helpful for those with dyslexia or limited vision or just tired eyes - mine is pink for the fun of it), the font, the spacing between characters, and loads more.
You can also try out a mode called 'Line focus', where it only focuses on one line, three lines, or five lines!
Tumblr media
Despite being able to read in Chinese for more than three years, I am still sometimes psychologically challenged by the terror-inducing sight of a massive wall of text in a tiny font on a computer screen. This makes it a lot easier!
Here's the five-line option. Please note that my screenshots aren't of the whole page, because for some reason all photos on tumblr that are horizontal don't upload...who knows.
Tumblr media
You can also look up anything to the dictionary with just a click. Best of all, however, you can get the text to be read aloud!
There are multiple different voices, many very natural sounding, from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. If you're learning another language, there are at least two options even for smaller languages (for example, two for Azerbaijani, two for Bangla and so on - I assume one is male and one is female). I've found the voices to be very good for Chinese, ranging from sajiao-pouting-douyin-girl to formal male newsreader. Listening to the ones from Taiwan is also a good way to get some listening practice for different accents!
Of course, you can change the speed of the reading under 'read aloud'.
Tumblr media
Finally, you can add each page to your 'collections' list - this would be a useful way of keeping useful articles together.
I came across this utterly by chance today, and I think it's a great tool for practicing reading speed and character recognition. Hope this helps someone else! meichenxi out

23.11.2024 // autumn quarter
getting back to self-study! today was bangla and korean; i'm still on the first unit of the bangla textbook i'm reading but i think it'll do me good to take it slow, especially since i'm still struggling to read the script haha. for korean i'm getting more confident expressing things, so the practice portions of the lessons are very fun! tomorrow, i'll do a bit for german :)

Writeblr intro (open to mutuals)
Hello again @ writeblr...! I'm Naila--Bangladeshi-Am (South Asian), sapphic, neurodivergent, they/them, incredibly nerdy about certain media like Revolutionary Girl Utena, and someone who has been very, very focused on their LGBT epic science fantasy for several years.
Fun fact is that for 5 years as a child I lived in Japan and only spoke Bangla and Japanese. I forgot both by the time I was 6 to 11, though I can understand spoken Bangla (and am fluent in English). 💦💦
I'm pretty much in love with my LGBT epic and multimedia science fantasy verse, once called Another Sky WIP and now called Blue Horizon! It's about three generations of alchemy-oriented mages upon a faraway planet obsessed with ancient Earth (our era) and their troubles across thousands of years!
I'm planning on releasing the first epic science fantasy novel (and side light novel/novella) at some point in the next months!
I'm both an artist and a writer, so you'll get art and writing topics from me! A lot of it is in my Blue Horizon tag.
Tumblr media
Despite that, I feel like I haven't gone all-out to make mutuals here on Tumblr. I'd love to make more mutuals who are 20 and older and interested in fantasy fiction (especially featuring BIPOC and LGBT characters)! 18 and older is fine too, but I won't mutual people who are younger than 18. (I'm 32.)
My main warning is that my novels are aimed for adult demographic and even my art can contain blood TW and cursing. Sometimes older Blue Horizon characters will have sultry/sexual implications, too, and not just romantic! (However, despite the main novel being an epic science fantasy and very romance-oriented--as far as I understand, it doesn't perfectly fit people's idea of Romantasy due to particularly intense and serious topics at times. I think of it as a epic science fantasy with a lot of gay, sapphic and LGBT romances and implied romances.)
I'm open to tag games. ^^ If people are open to being tagged, feel free to mention it in this post, my pinned, or message/ask box me!
Hope to connect with more people here! 💗

2025 and I'm not dead yet?
I am still here! Somehow... Yeesh though, I ended up going through enough in the past year to completely remove me from social media. With the New Year, I'm back to this account and back to loving the idea of keeping it as a record of my language / learning progressions. Updates! No major updates on my progress in either of my current focus languages (ASL, Masri, or FusHa), but I have been practicing in secret. :P I might have hit a small rut with ∼ feeling ∼ the progress so hopefully that will help with it. Recently had an IRL also start to learn ASL which restarted some of that initial love for it. It was satisfying to have basic phrases or fingerspelling work for us to get through small conversations! Arabic, oh Arabic... I have had very little motivation to practice and am struggling to get over a frustration barrier. I think maybe I got overexcited with some of my practice material and am too hung up on trying to understand every single word of everything I take in. (Similar problem when practicing Romanian actually... I have to consciously step back and see if I can get the big picture and big details before getting hung up on stuff.) On the bright side, despite a lack of practicing as intense as I want to, I'm still able to pick up info when I hear it in my real life! Actually speaking it on the other hand.... hahahahaaaaa I also added a few more languages to the list of languages I'm trying to pick up here and there! I want to get a basis down for what "here and there" actually means for me. First, how do I pick them out? They're all a mix of languages I want to learn for fun VS languages for practicality. Spanish (Practicality -> Useful for family and areas I live in.) German (Practicality -> Might live in German speaking areas later on in life.) Korean (Fun -> I consume a LOT of Korean music) Japanese (Fun -> I consume a LOT of Japanese Music) Latin (Fun -> It's Latin) Tagalog (Fun -> I consume some music in Tagalog)  Swahili, Thai, and Bangla may show up on the list in the future, but right now those are dreams that are a bit further in the distance.
What experience do I have with them? Spanish (None... D:) German (Took classes a long time ago. That knowledge is rattling somewhere in my head and I cannot access it for the life of me.) Korean (I picked up on Hangul and that is about it.) Japanese (None... D:) Latin (Speaking Romanian gives me a big advantage. I think this is language I don't want to take too seriously and just learn vocab for. Helps me if I ever want to fully pursue any other language with Latin origins.) Tagalog (None D:) What do I want to DO with them? First and foremost, I want to pick up on vocab for all of em. For a lot of these languages, I already take in content in said language. Paying a bit more attention during these times shouldn't be much of a problem. Language specific wise, I think Japanese is the only one I need to learn the scripts for. I don't expect a casual learning method to get me to fluency, but I'm hoping it could give me a nice base for when/if I decide to pursue it more seriously later on. I also want them to serve the purpose of reminding me why and how I love languages. I know I get frustrated easily, but I know my passion outweighs that frustration a million times over. Having the variety helps my brain remember that! I'm excited :P

Fun anecdote about me:
Only spoke Bangla in my household for like the first 6 years of my life
So naturally didn't know some of the English words for stuff
Sitting in assembly in primary school
Weird feeling in my feet
Don't know what to do about weird feeling
Have never felt it before
Doesn't feel Good
I know what to do
Slaps foot
Again and again and again
But
Thinks is being quite sneaky about it
Teacher comes up to me
Is like the fuck r u doin?
I'm like I don't know??? Weird feeling??? Getting it out??? Didn't think I was slapping that hard???
She's like stop it.
I don't stop it
I attempt to slap my foot in a more stealthy way
She shouts at me after assembly
I'm confused
What did I do
I go home and tell my mother
She's like child. You had pins and needles.
And that's when I first learned what pins and needles were.

What is your newest hobby? What is your favorite hobby? Did someone close to you teach you or did you decide to learn for yourself?
*Asks are for fun, no pressure to answer quickly or at all.*
i think my newest hobby has been reading books in foreign languages!! ive been learning spanish/french by myself for a few years (and obviously know bangla because im bengali ksksk) but ive never had the confidence to actually read Books in them. i bought a bangla edition of rabindranath tagore's 'chokher bali' and right now im getting through 'la mort heureuse' by camus :D i want to improve my arabic a bit more before i try reading something in arabic too, bc i think that'd be the ultimate flex
i think my favourite hobby is writing :')) i think art is closely tied but writing is just a bit more accessible in terms of the fact i dont need so much equipment to be able to do it. i really really love watching a plot bunny turn into a full story outline down to the plot beats in my documents. the feeling that there's an entire fic just. There in my life without me realising is so magical
