Really tired of streaming services making absolute banger animated TV shows for adults, never advertising them, then canceling then because no one watches them, so I'm taking it upon myself to share some of the ones I've watched recently with the hope other people will hear about them for the first time and give them a shot.
---
Blue Eye Samurai
"A master of the sword lives life in disguise while seeking revenge in Edo-period Japan."
Probably one of my favorite animated shows of all time. Mizu, arguably one of the best sword masters in this time period, goes on a quest to eliminate four white men living in Japan, one of which is Mizu's father. The show focuses heavily on how factors outside of your control, such as race and gender, impact how others view you and how you view yourself.
Watch if you are a fan of: Complicated characters/relationships, revenge quests, gore, complicated relationships with gender and race, and absolute badass characters.
Where to Watch: Netflix
Undone
"After 28-year-old Alma nearly dies in a car accident, she finds that she has a new relationship with time; she develops this newfound relationship to find out the truth about her father's death."
Undone focuses on difficult relationships with family, including how your parents can have profound effects on you even after they're gone, and how to deal with grief. That, plus the added chaos of being able to travel through time.
Watch if you are a fan of: character studies, shows dealing with grief, time travel, trying to rewrite fate.
Where to watch: Prime
Scavengers Reign
"The crew of a damaged deep space freighter are stranded on a beautiful but dangerous planet."
A mix between sci-fi and horror, this show focuses on the crew of a crashed spaceship. Each (living) crew member of the ship escaped in pods, scattering them across the planet. They must fight to survive and make their way back to their ship on a planet featuring some of the most fucked up creatures I've ever seen.
Watch if you like: sci-fi, isolationist horror, body horror, creature features
Where to watch: At the moment, Max. As of May 31st, Netflix. Max canceled the show (even though it has a 100% rating 🙃). Netflix may make a season 2 depending on how many people watch it in the first few weeks after it comes to Netflix.
Harley Quinn
"The newly single Harley Quinn sets off to make it on her own as the criminal queenpin in Gotham City."
Honestly I was feeling a bit burnt out on super hero shows, but this one felt like a breath of fresh air. It follows Harley as steps out from the shadow of the Joker, no longer being one of his henchmen and struggling to find her identity as a single, independent villain.
Watch if you like: Superhero/villain shows, stories that focus on blurred lines instead of a clear distinction between good and evil.
Where to Watch: Max
Primal
"At the dawn of evolution, a caveman and a dinosaur on the brink of extinction bond over unfortunate tragedies and become each other's only hope of survival in a treacherous world."
This show is super unique in that there's basically no dialogue, but it still finds a way to display an absolutely gutwrenching relationship between two parents of different species going through shared grief.
Watch if you like: Brutality, heavily visual story telling, prehistoric stories, and tales of overcoming.
Where to Watch: Hulu
Love Death and Robots
"This collection of animated short stories spans several genres, including science fiction, fantasy, horror and comedy. World-class animation creators bring captivating stories to life in the form of a unique and visceral viewing experience. The animated anthology series includes tales that explore alternate histories, life for robots in a post-apocalyptic city and a plot for world domination by super-intelligent yogurt."
I love this show because you never have any clue what to expect. A siren living in a river falling for a deaf knight? An artist painting intergalactic art pieces? Three robots going on a field trip through the apocalypse to visit old human historical sites? You never know, but there's going to be love, death, and/or robots in it. Each episode varies wildly, so I'd recommend watching at least a few to get a taste for it, as some will resonate more strongly than others.
---
I'm sure there are lots more excellent animated shows, but these are all the ones I've watched in the past year or so. I'd love to see more recs in the tags, because I'm always down to watch more cool animations!
#i just want these shows to get the attention they deserve#animation#tv#personal#the life of an audio engineer#tv recs

Anything you're especially proud to have accomplished this year before the new one rolls upon us?
TRUTHFULLY a lot of my accomplishments were relatively small compared to my ambitions but in the grand scheme of things add up to a lot of meaningful life improvements and successes i think. i dont know if there's like ONE BIG THING i'm especially proud of. a lot of the big stuff i WANTED to do got pretty delayed for one reason or another. but, as for small stuff:
i started an even SOMEWHAT regular exercise routine and have managed to hit the end of the year without dropping it completely, despite occasional slowdown
i got my name legally changed
though it was a bit of a bait-and-switch in terms of intentional production value, we DID technically put out an episode of SRTF this year. we even shadowdropped it, and it has received a ton of praise in spite of itself.
in terms of streams, i genuinely think this was the best year for stream quality and consistency i have ever had. with absolute banger playthroughs like Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2, Dragon Quest 8, Resident Evil 4, etc. i think i really raised the bar for myself.
and oh shit speaking of, i did my first marathon charity stream this year and raised over $10K for AHA
i made a lot of progress on my art!! made an honest effort to pick it back up and i genuinely think my work at the end of the year compared to where it was is a subtle but noticeable bump, though i did fall off a bit more than i intended.
and though i don't have MUCH to show for it right now tangibly, i have been working a lot in the back of my mind and in various documents on some Actual Fiction that i hope to be able to sink my teeth into more next year.
and yeah there's definitely a lot more small stuff in between! it's tough because i still feel so behind on a lot of stuff that i feel like should have been a lot higher priority for me, but if i'm giving myself credit it definitely puts into perspective just how Not Totally Washed i am when i start to list stuff out. which is nice to be able to do! everything in its time i suppose! im not starting 2024 with any "resolutions" or anything quite as high stakes per se but i do have a large list of goals im still gonna be working towards. i think the main thing i really want to nail down is prioritizing my time and energy towards the things that are gonna make the biggest impact on my own personal satisfaction so it becomes easier to feel like i wasn't just coasting for 12 months.

1x04 - Pantom Traveler
Score: 8
So much lore in one episode! We've got our first demon (with black smoke, black eyes, sulfur, holy water, exorcism), our first homemade EMF meter, first fake IDs, first official suits. Why did they forget/abandon the Christo thing though? It was so cool!
The writers were really smart, introducing Dean in the episode as a fearless man, and then exposing him to his greatest fear: flying. The boys were given a chance at comedy (R2's Then and Now) and Thank God! I loved Jensen's acting!
And Sam really pisses me off... He's getting better and knows how to soothe interviews. But he's always judgemental and condescending toward his brother. He should be praising him for building an EMF meter out of a busted-up walkman. Instead, he mocks him. And yeah, if Dean didn't ask the translation of God in latin, it's because he knew it already.
At this point in the season, I don't understand the way the writers chose to depict Sam. He's supposed to be the heart of the story, on a vengeful quest after his girlfriend was killed. But we still don't know much about him, whereas we know A LOT about Dean (what he likes, his skills, his childhood, his fears).
Are we supposed to connect with Sam just through the situations he's in?
1x04 in a nutshell:
Score in details:
Dean is bi: 0 pt (though he checks out the girl getting inside the Copy Jack when he's leaving the shop)
Sexy shots: 1 pt (Dean sleeping in tiny shorts)
First introduction of beloved characters/guests/well known actors: 1 pt (first demon)
Banger quotes: 3 pts ("What are you, nuts?" Said by the guy who put himself in a psychiatric hospital/"Why do you think I drive everywhere, Sam?"/"Just try to relax." "Just try to shut up")
Bonus: 4 pts (Music/Lore: first demon, first fake IDs, first official suit, EMF meter made out of a busted-up walkman, first exorcism in latin/Jensen's acting skills/practical effects)
Malus: 1 pt (Plothole: why did the brothers choose the emergency exit at the airport? They had no way of knowing they were busted)

Yanqing and Yunli Appreciation Post
Keep Reading cut due to 2.4 spoilers~ (also relatively long-ish post)
These two bounce off each other so well! As a writer, it feels so satisfying to see their characters shine through the quest and the event in the way their interactions highlight them. So I'm gonna use this space to ramble about it!
My previous post pretty much talked about it already, but Yanqing!!! My son!!! I was quite worried that any potential arc for him would be shoved down the road or to the side due to the scale HSR has, but the game's been actually holding up to his ongoing arc. As a result, at least to me, he's come through as one of the best written/developed characters on the Xianzhou so far.
The nature of the length of the updates lets what we get in previous quests settle in for a long while, and considering the mentioned of flow of time in-game, Yanqing's had the time to think and develop as a person. The fact that so many players have had their view and opinion of him finally turn around in this quest is a testament to that. We get to see more facets of him, as in, doing his job and the responsibilities of doing so, and how his insecurities are mentioned in a main quest for all to see. He's constantly referencing others and his past encounters. You can tell that Jing Yuan raised him with his manner and approach to things, which is highlighted by the contrast to Yunli (will get to that soon).
His position as a child soldier has made him mature faster, be quiet even when he's been wronged (filial piety/saving face (aka thank you person on Reddit who makes the banger character Yanqing (and other characters in general) appreciation posts)), take a step back and have to be able to read the room (though, reasonably, he doesn't catch on all the time), and much, much more. The fact that other official content has described him as being more worried about diplomacy and all that. He doesn't have the luxury to be as carefree or brash for someone his age.
There's a lot to unpack there still, even with the development he's had now and that's good! If the Hoyo writing team was wild enough, it'd be cool to see them address the grayness of his role and Jing Yuan's mindset in raising him as he did (We love Dad-Yuan and he loves his son dearly no question, but it'd be so interesting to explore his flaws/mistakes in this perspective!).
Now onto Yunli.
I'm saying straight off the bat, I'm irritated by her!
And that's a good thing!
Her being annoying or bratty or irritating doesn't automatically make her a badly written character! She only would become one if they don't do anything with her, and HSR most probably will, and she should be given the same room to develop in her own arc.
She acts like her age, and she doesn't have the same pressures as Yanqing does. Just like how you can see Jing Yuan in Yanqing, you can see Huaiyan in Yunli, if anything he says is to go by. She's tempremental and outspoken to a fault, and based on the way how quickly Huaiyan relented when she talked back, you can tell that Huaiyan isn't as strict/stern with her to give her a sense of being humble.
I had this thought that she's technically what the general fandom viewed Yanqing as initially, and I'm not saying that as a 100% thing, by the way. But like by some traits and the vibes. She, of course, has a lot more nuance that will be explored at one point or another.
But back on topic, she's a foil. They represent two different approaches and lifestyles and can clearly learn from each other. Her inconsideration of the fact that she's on the Luofu but enforcing Zhuming practices (which I noticed people were upset by, and same; which I imagine is the point), her bluntness to no matter who she's talking to—there's a lot to work with here.
Just like with their swordplay, Yanqing could learn from her mental strength while Yunli can learn from his focused speed and defense. He can learn to regain a more firm grasp of his recently found purpose while she can learn to mature and take in her surroundings and be more thoughtful in that front.
Another interesting note is that where we are with Yanqing currently is in the middle of his arc, we've had the time to see him take a long route of struggle to get to this point, exacerbated by irl players views of him. He's in the middle of his growth and we've had since 1.0 to get to know him. But with Yunli, she was introduced very recently, so we're technically at the "beginning" of her character arc. In a way, Yunli now highlights how far Yanqing has come and changed, and in a way Yanqing now is a potential show for the arc that Yunli can have (not being the exact same as him of course).
I think the idea with these two is that they develop to be more balanced. Balance is such an important thing, especially in Chinese culture (Daoism (Yin-Yang), etc.), and 2.4 has shown how much potential they have to make for amazing character arcs.
It's cool that while they have such similar base traits, they're so different from each other. Calling Yunli a female Yanqing or Yanqing a male Yunli is simply outright incorrect. Their backgrounds, upbringings, ideals, swordstyles, perspectives, and positions in life are so distinct. I'm looking forward to their futures!
#honkai star rail#hsr#hsr yanqing#hsr yunli#character appreciation#character analysis#despite writing all of that i still feel like i haven't encapsualted fully what i wanted to say esp about yanqing#for yunli i want more time with her character to see where they take her character#i'd assume that they'd give her the same amount of effort as they did yanqing cause it'd be a shame if she remained static which might be#fine superficially since it'd be a cool contrast to yanqing's constant directly visible changing but on a deeper level#yunli a year from now shouldn't be the exact same as she is currently and if she somehow is#that'd be the worst case scenario writing-wise and I trust Hoyo enough to not do that#but if they somehow do then you know what essay I'm writing that day lol#not liking yunli is fine as is not liking yanqing is fine too but I hope she doesn't get treated like Yanqing til her development arc#tho she probably won't which also says a lot if that turns out to be the case#but i'm already making these tags way too long and my brain is very small LOL#struggling jpg thinks

Jeuno: The First Walk
Context, references, and random BS about stuff in the first FFXI raid and the quests before and after.
Tossing under a Read More mainly because I talked too much and I don't wanna throw a giant ass post on your dash.
Enjoy!
THE RAID
An interesting thing about music: in the Boyahda Tree and Tu'Lia sections, the music changes to the battle theme when engaging the trash mobs, and then it fades out once they're dead.
Oh, and just to note, given that FFXI and FFXIV have different combat systems and visuals, even if I mention that a boss ability is something from FFXI, understand I don't mean it's the same in regards to visuals or mechanics. I'm mainly just pointing out references.
PRISHE
Prishe is a MNK and a WHM, so she fights hand to hand, but can also use Holy / Light-elemental spells.
Nullifying Dropkick, Auroral Uppercut, and Knuckle Sandwich are unique weaponskills that Prishe uses in FFXI.
Asuran Fists is a Hand-to-Hand weaponskill in FFXI, only useable by MNK and PUP. Learning it required getting to a certain level of H2H skill and then doing a quest. It hits 8 times, and so does this version of it.
Her "You can't stop the flood of mortal existence!" line is something she said in FFXI.
BOYAHDA TREE
Aquarius was a NM crab in FFXI. There was a chance it would spawn instead of one of the normal crab enemies in the Boyahda Tree zone. Oddly, in the raid it uses Hundred Fists, which is the original MNK 2-hour (it made you attack very fast for a short time). In FFXI, this mob was a PLD, not a MNK. But it did have a very high attack speed, so I assume they gave it that ability to simulate that.
(I'm pretty sure Aquarius once spawned and killed me while I was trying to raise my Scythe skill on the crabs in the Tree. A friend came and raised me and helped me kill it for revenge.)
No music plays when you're not fighting something, which fits, because the Boyahda Tree zone in FFXI doesn't have any background music.
FAFNIR
Honestly not much to say about Fafnir. Overall, most of its attacks share names with ones it does in FFXI and are kinda similar. Spike Flail hit everyone in range in FFXI, and Dragon Breath was a frontal cone, for two examples.
One other thing: I didn't know this, but in FFXI there's a stronger version of Fafnir, Nidhogg. Way back, Fafnir used to be a timed spawn, and there was a chance Nidhogg would spawn instead (now they're both spawned by items). So I wonder if maaaaaaaybe there's a chance you go into this raid and it's called Nidhogg instead?
TU'LIA
Technically this is Ru'Aun Gardens. That's the actual name of the zone. But it's on the floating island of Tu'Lia. Players usually just called it "sky".
A note on the ground mentions trying to get to Ve'Lugannon Palace and missing the raid. I think the only thing this can be about is spawning Kirin. A few NMs in the palace dropped items to spawn some NMs that then dropped items used to spawn Kirin.
Another note on the ground is referencing the Ark Angels.
Despot is a NM Doll that dropped an item used to spawn Genbu, which in turn dropped an item used to spawn Kirin.
ARK ANGELS
Man this fight is a banger.
Their lines like "You shall be defeated by the apathy that plagues you…" are directly from FFXI.
AA Galka is a SAM and DRG. His pattern of using Meikyo Shisui and three Great Katana weaponskills is exactly how he behaves in his FFXI fight, right down to which three weaponskills he uses. Also, Dragonfall is a unique weaponskill he had in FFXI.
AA Tarutaru is a BLM and DRK. Guillotine was a four-hit Scythe weaponskill only available to DRKs (it was single target though).
AA Mithra is a BST and THF. In FFXI she'd summon a pet to assist her, but alas, she doesn't do that here. Her Rampage and Cloudsplitter moves are named after Axe weaponskills from FFXI, while Havoc Spiral is her unique weaponskill.
AA Elvaan is a PLD and WHM. Dominion Slash is her unique weaponskill in FFXI. Arrogance Incarnate is also something she used in FFXI, but it's just her own version of another weaponskill available to players, so not really unique.
AA Hume is a WAR and NIN, and man, he does a lot. Cross Reaver is his unique weaponskill in FFXI. Utsusemi was a NIN spell that gave you shadow doubles that absorbed attacks for you. Mighty Strikes is the original WAR 2-hour ability. It made every attack a critical, which is why he then uses Critical Reaver. And he tries to use Mijin Gakure, which was the original NIN 2-hour. You blew yourself up to deal damage based on your HP.
SHADOW LORD
Giga Slash and Implosion are attacks he had in FFXI. Tera Slash is from the Dynamis Lord fight though. Creating clones of himself is also something from the Dynamis Lord version.
OTHER STUFF
ALXAAL
I am 99% sure this is a character from Chains of Promathia called Louverance. That's also not his real name, but we won't go into that right now. Bakool Ja Ja naming him "vagabond" is kinda appropriate.
Honestly, I find it kinda funny they used this character. If you'd asked me to suggest CoP characters that could show up in this storyline, he would not have been on my list.
Also, Alxaal initally thinking he's been captured by the Mamool Ja may be a nod to the Besieged system in Treasures of Aht Urghan. At times, a horde of beastmen (Mamool Ja, Trolls, or Undead) will march on and attack the capital city of Al Zahbi in order to steal the Astral Candescence. Players have to fight them off. Certain NPCs can be captured as well, and players can go rescue them.
ULMIA
An Elvaan female, a very talented singer, and basically the nicest person ever. She lives in the Tavnazian Safehold and is Prishe's best friend. She's more or less "cute girl important to the plot #2" for Chains of Promathia.
THE TAVNAZIA MARQUISATE
Sister city to San d'Oria, located on an archipelago off the west coast of Quon. The opening cutscene of FFXI shows it being attacked by the Beastmen Horde during the Crystal War.
During the Crystal War, San d'Oria leaked false information to the Beastmen to get them to attack Tavnazia. Partially to get some pressure off the kingdom, but also because Tavnazia had a close relationship with the Empire of Aht Urhgan to the east. The hope was that the Empire would join the fight against the Beastmen after Tavnazia was attacked.
But the Empire didn't get involved, and later Tavnazia was destroyed by an explosion. The common belief is that it was an Orc superweapon, like Prishe says, but that's not what actually happened.
LITTLE THINGS
I was confused by Prishe talking about liking tacos until I happened to talk to Alxaal and he mentioned Tavnazian tacos. They're a food item that increases defense. I'd forgotten about them.
Just a little tidbit, the Aldo that Prishe mentions is also from Tavnazia. He's also the little boy in the FFXI opening cutscene.
The Hume Adventurer mentions his gear came from exploring the Alzadaal Undersea Ruins. I suspect that's referring to Salvage missions that you access from that zone. His equipment resembles the Ares set you can get from that.
Heh. This shade in fake Jeuno appears to be "looking for group" or "looking for members". No party finder in FFXI (at least when I played, dunno about now), so you'd frequently see people shouting to find groups or members for leveling or missions.
Teleport taxis! There's another shade with pop-up text mentioning Mea and 1k. The Crag of Mea was one of a few places that you could teleport to via a spell, but only WHMs could cast it. (And there was a unique spell for each place.) So you'd frequently be paying someone to teleport you.
The Auction House in FFXI works differently than the Market Board in FFXIV. The seller sets a mininum price for the item they put up for sale, and pays a fee based on that minimum price. The buyer cannot see this minimum price, and makes a bid. If the bid equals or exceeds the minimum price, the buyer gets the item and the seller receives the amount of gil the buyer bid.
Prishe's last sentence is a reference to the Bazaar, but specifically to how players would avoid the tax that it used to have. The Bazaar is an alternate to the Auction House and lets you sell directly from your inventory. But selling via the Bazaar while in town used to incur a tax, so players would idle just outside Jeuno in Rolanberry Fields. I called it "Rolanberry Market". SQEX eventually removed the tax.
In FFXI, you unlock the ability to use a Support Job, or sub job, at level 18 by doing a quest either in Selbina or Mhaura. Both quests make you collect three items from monsters, but they require different items. What Alxaal is describing here is the Selbina one, which was the easier one to do.

Inspired by the "we had King and Lionheart on 8tracks" post going around and prompted by the latest work by Lyv, a musician doing fan songs for BG3 characters, who reached Dame Aylin and (very correctly) concluded "yeah, this one needs to be a 7-minute metal track" - here's my personal selection of things I listen to to instantly hop into my Aylin mindset. I mean, I loved 8tracks and I have King and Lionheart on all my playlists forever, but here I think I'm going for an older feel, when we had LiveJournal posts of pertinent lyric extracts with mp3s of the songs and YouSendIt links expiring in a week.
Aylin, for me, tends towards bombastic and cheesy symphonic/power metal, with lavish guitar solos and dramatic lyrics about fighting dark lords and riding dragons and seeking magical swords, lovingly crafted labyrinthine fantasy lore stretching over and across albums, often delivered in somewhat awkward English. But also just a lot of big, loud feelings that I love listening to metal for. She was made to grace album covers, is what I'm saying.
Without further ado, under the cut I give you my 8 Metal Tracks To Fly Around And Smite Your Father-In-Law To (but it's actually 16 because I provided an alt option for each song).
Seeking Vengeance by Unleash the Archers
youtube
Like a wave of death, I wash over all who stand in my way, there's no redemption now
Self-explanatory in all things, I'd say. Big, powerful vengeance song with moments of nuance, in that we get "I am the falling blade" and "Who have I become? I know not where I've gone to" both packed in there. And also, the song just slaps.
Alt: Afterlife, the song that provides a counterplay with "I won't waste my freedom, vengeance will not make me whole". And also some killer instrumentals.
2. Spillways by Ghost
youtube
All your faith, all your rage, all your pain It ain't over now, and I ain't talking about forgiveness
Dealing with anger and darkness that exist within you and needing to find an outlet to stop it all from overflowing? Say no more. Ghost is a fave of mine but most of their stuff wouldn't really fit here, theme-wise. This song is perfect though.
Alt: Hunter's Moon is another one of my go-tos to ponder some inevitable violent vengeance.
3. Where Angels Fear to Fly by Battle Beast
youtube
They say the darkest hours are just before the dawn That we must die to be reborn I'm still alive, I'm ready for the pain When I fall, I'll rise again I spread my wings and like the midnight sun I will be rising
Five million years ago I saw these guys open for Nightwish and sing about Guts and Griffith from Berserk and got hooked. This is a far more recent offering, and it's both a banger and super on the nose for what I'm looking for here.
Alt: Wings of Light which hits the spot in a very similar vein.
4. NightSky by Kamelot
youtube
I'll stay with you all through your pain Blood of my blood Remember your name 'Cause when the night sky is coming down I'm watching over you And when the darkness falls Just close your eyes Remember your name
This is unironically my Selûne song and my brain loves tying it into the whole "Nightsong was only ever a curse" thing.
Alt: Silent Goddess prompted by that one kickass fanart that quoted it.
5. Rain of Fury by Rhapsody of Fire
youtube
Rain of fury my blade, like wings in the mist Hold my breath in the shade, both my hands on the hilt A thousand sparkles collide, igniting the cave There's nowhere to hide, I'm the valorous, the brave
These guys won my heart a couple of decades ago when they first sang about winning the dark lord with an emerald sword and they never fail to get me pumped. Some classic stuff to really get you going, get you on that quest, get you through that dungeon.
Alt: March Against the Tyrant, primarily for the gentle farewell-before-battle "Let me feel once more how much life you have on your lips" opening.
6. Charcoal Grace I: Prey by Caligula's Horse
youtube
I could bind my heart to anger And hold my breath for bliss that was promised me While the desperate hands of vengeance demand to deliver me
I actually have a very hard time picking between Part I and Part IV (and I usually don't listen to one without the other) - in fact the entire very heavy suite about reckoning with a horrible father is… something else. This is absolutely an outlier style-wise and genre-wise as it's pure prog, but it really taps into a specific brand of anger for me and I love it.
Alt: The aforementioned Charcoal Grace IV: Give Me Hell aka "Give back the years you stole and beg me".
7. Amaranth by Nightwish
youtube
Caress the one, the never-fading rain in your heart
Listen, this one is here purely because I imprinted on the music video with the wounded angel when I was 15. But also there's a couple of amaranth-as-tied-to-immortality "never-fading" references in it so it stays.
Alt: Sleeping Sun for a calm, sad, yearning time.
8. The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight by Blind Guardian
youtube
Proudly it stands Until the world's end The victorious banner of love
A non-angry one to end things on! Blind Guardian is one of my favourite bands ever and so they were bound to be here. It's been really hard to stick to one two songs per artist. Anyway, I wouldn't go with this one as super directly applicable lyrically as it's a Tristan and Isolde song, but the chorus gets me, I love listening to it, and I maintain it has the correct Vibes.
Alt: When Sorrow Sang, aka the Beren and Luthien song off their Silmarillion album, for all the obvious mortal/immortal reasons.
#dame aylin#bg3#baldur's gate 3#let's call this a#fanmix#music#metal#another spontaneous post outing by yours truly

Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest episode 8: thoughts + opinions
what a banger way to start a new episode lmao
Gray: ''Like, do fairies have...nails?''
Natsu x2 in any way, shape or form is just a disaster waiting to happen, let's be honest
N: ''Yeah, I wanna' meet my twin!'' L: ''That's a case of double trouble waiting to happen.''
HOLY CRAP FAIRY NAIL NALU (Nakku and Lusha) // I LOVE THEM AND THEIR DYNAMIC ALREADY!
HOW THE HELL IS EVERY OTHER VERSION OF NALU CANON, EXCEPT FOR FAIRY TAIL'S NALU? 😭😭😭
I'm totally not surprised that Gray's Fairy Nail counterpart (Gren) is a stripper too, albeit a professional one

JUVINA! 🫶🏻
''I'M JUST A DUMB FURBALL?'' LMAO HAPPY
look at these two dummies ❤️
yeah okay, Cara may or may not be selling out her footsies (idk why they changed it from ''foot model'' to ''leg model'' in the dub) and Rocky's a pornstar, we get it
and yes, Nakku and Lusha are essentially fucking in the guild even though it seems like he's a total ass towards her, but she isn't exactly opposed to it (notice how she's making a heart symbol with her hands)
AHHHH GRUVIA! 🥹💙🩵

do I need to say anything else?
Juvina is soooo pretty

''So, you don't deny that she's your beloved?'' // YES, GET HIM JUVINA
even though Nalu is my absolute favorite Fairy Tail ship, I also love Gruvia a crap ton too, so I'm happy to finally see the development in their relationship🫶🏻
''I want to give Juvia what she needs, but I can't. Not with the man I am now.''
''I'm doing everything to better myself. She deserves it: a man who's strong enough to protect her. And when I'm that man, I'll make her mine.''
NOT NATSU BURNING ALL OF LUCY'S CLOTHES BECAUSE SOME GUYS WERE HITTING ON HER + ALSO THIS MOMENT!

YAY JUVIA!

I love how everyone in Drasil is just super chill whilst Aldoron's just doing things
LOOK EVERYONE, THE WHOLE GUILD'S HERE TO HAVE SOME FUN
I MOSTLY LOVED ALL THE GRUVIA AND NALU MOMENTS IN THIS EPISODE, BUT I'M ALSO HYPED FOR THE NEXT EPISODES AND TEAM NATSU VS. WHITEOUT FAIRY TAIL MEMBERS!

I finished Tales of the Abyss not that long ago, so I wanted to write down my thoughts on it! Honestly, very very good game. I can see why it is so many people's favorite. I will write things below that I liked and disliked about the game below; Stuff I liked: - The story always kept me intrigued, I always wanted to keep playing after every play-session. - All of the main cast is very likeable and has their own struggles which hurt my heart. - Each character gets a time in the spotlight which just makes me so happy. None of them feel shoved aside or forgotten about. - You understand why the villain is doing the things they're doing. - How much LORE is written down on bookshelves in-game and etc. It's so COOL how much world-building this game has. - I was not able to predict the plot twists and reveals beforehand. - All the main party members work off each other very well and they're all so cute. - All of the character's character development throughout the story was very nice to see, and very heartwarming. - The final boss wasn't easy but not so hard that I wanna tear my hair out. - Katamari Tokunaga and Taiko no Tatsujin reference. - I usually don't do mini-games in Tales games, but the ones in Abyss were fairly fun and didn't make me wanna die. - Oh the amount of FORESHADOWING, definitely would be super fun to replay and notice all the stuff they allude to beforehand. - ENG Voice direction is very good (besides Anise's, but that's more funny than it being something I actually dislike.) My favorite voice direction has to be Guy's, the parts where he gets very angry is just. So Good. - Character designs, which Tales hardly misses in that regard. - ICONIC BANGER THEME SONG. - FOF mechanic in battles was very fun and easy to understand when explained. - The end was good. - Side-quests didn't feel useless or annoying. - I didn't despise the mascot character. Actually ended up being pretty cute. - A lot of parts of the game are voiced. - Each character has unique falling animations. - Jade has like the funniest lines ever and made me laugh very hard. - So much silly stuff between the party that makes me like them all even more. - I love the amount of costumes for the characters. Stuff I didn't like: - Some things just.. Felt too slow? Mainly exploring the over-world. I had x2 speed on during battles, dungeons, and over-world stuff so it wasn't a complete issue. - This is just an average older Tales thing, but how are you supposed to know when to do side-quests without using a guide lol. - I don't hate Asch, but sometimes he got really annoying. Which might have been the game showing us how immature he really is. But a lot of parts involving him made me go "Oh my God.". The part at the end involving him made me really sad though, even though he wasn't my favorite. - Might be a me thing but, sometimes they dump way too much information on you at once and it is kind of hard to process what it all means in that moment. - I played undub so this was not an issue for me; but the unvoiced skits in the original. I hope if the game is remastered, they will finally voice these in English. - (This was not the game itself's fault, and was likely MY specific one) But after fighting the final boss and finishing the cut-scenes, RIGHT before I was given the prompt to save, my game crashed. So if I decide to play again, I have to fight the boss again. And I don't wanna do that so--- All in all, these ended up being my favorites: - Favorite characters: Jade, Guy, Ion (but tbh i like everyone) - Favorite God-Generals: Dist, Largo, Arietta (but again tbh I like them all)

I’m so torn on what I want to happen vs what can happen vs what will happen lmao.
Like Tim is fully stealing ao3 plots right now so I would find it hilarious for Buck and Eddie who are already insane about each other, but even more so when they have to share the other with someone else, go on this journey of Buck trying to make new friends.
So there they are, on their face time call (since Ryan said they would be) and bucks going on about his new besties he’s trying to make. Meanwhile Eddie’s hating his life and contemplating how fast he can get back to LA 😂 bonus points if it’s where one of them is another dog but Eddie doesn’t know it’s a dog and is just like 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 this is fine. Totally fine. So he’s got another fiend. Big deal he’s allowed to have other friends. I gave him a child but sure fine Ralph is just soooooo great. Look at his smile. Must be thanks to perfect pretty Ralph. Meanwhile, bucks smiling because he had like a peanut butter or cheese covered treat and the dog licked his hand and it made him smile for the first time since Eddie left 😂😂😂
Or with the whole Bobby’s mom leads a cult. Perfect time for good old confused and lonely lost Buck to stumble his way in. Will he accidentally join a cult in his quest to expand his social circle 😂😂😂😂
We definitely know and have seen now though, out of the two of them, Eddie is definitely the one that’s smoother sf making friends, and Buck, is going to be this big awkward mass of messy awkward cringe lmao. Leaving all of his “new friends” going 👁️ 👄 👁️ who’s Eddie ???
YES Nonny! You get it! You get the vision! This episode has so much unlocked potential. We have seen two bangers of episodes so far. I need the show to keep up the energy and give us another one.
I need to see Bobby's crazy mom interact with Athena. I need Buck to go out there and find new friends while talking about Eddie. I need Eddie to go bonkers in Texas. I just-- I need it all and I need to SEE it now! Why do we have to wait so long? 😭

For the past Few Years I've been building a list of Jacob Geller videos that represent the fifteen Fears in The Magnus Archives.
Today he released a video that finally completed my list.
Here's the list, in the order of the fears on the TMA wiki (most of which have links. Some of the videos are age restricted, so I can't post working links here).
THE BURIED: Fear of Depths While this concept may at first seem more aligned with The Vast, the video surrounds a motif of needing to go Deeper. Of a cave or darkness surrounding you completely, burying you. It also follows a few stories of people getting stuck in caves.
youtube
(List continued under break)
THE CORRUPTION: Gross Games About Flesh And Stuff "But Orthus!" you cry. "The word flesh is literally in the name!" You would be right! But one of the games this video heavily features (Perfect Vermin) is about cancer, and the slow painful progression of it! It's arguable if How Fish Is Made is corruption aligned fully, but since it features a tongue eating louse, I'm saying it counts too.
youtube
THE DARK: Fear of Dark As of writing this, Fear of Dark was released four hours ago, completing this list. I was so stumped on this one until literally twenty minutes ago. Thank you, Mr Geller. This one is self explanatory I think. Yes, I haven't finished watching it. I don't care. I know it's a banger already.
youtube
THE DESOLATION: Returnal is a Hell of Our Own Creation Yes, this video isn't about fire. But The Desolation isn't just fire. It's about pain, it's about loss, it's about cruel destruction. And Returnal is about the horrible cycle of grief after catastrophic loss. To me, it fits.
youtube
THE END: Fear of Cold Usually the "fear of" videos on this list are pretty straightforwards but I feel like this requires some explanation. This video is about cold, but it's also about dying from cold and the lengths that people will go to, however painful, to avoid death. Lots of Geller videos are about mortality. This one hits extra hard though.
youtube
THE EYE: Control, Anatomy, and the Legacy of the Haunted House Houses can't watch someone, but Oh Boy do the games in this video make it feel like they can! There's something so fitting about this idea for The Eye. No matter where you are in a house, you're always in its walls. If it's perceiving you, there's nowhere to escape that. Banger video. Also banger games.
youtube
THE FLESH: Head Transplants and the Non-Existence of the Soul This one is a bit more of a stretch, I'll admit. But here's my defence: it deals with the separation of the body and the soul, the treatment of the body as just a vessel for our minds. Vivisection is absolutely something aligned with The Flesh. So I think this one fits here. The video is age restricted and so I can't put it here. There's a content warning in it that I very much recommend heeding.
THE HUNT: The Decade-Long Quest for Shadow of the Colossus’ Last Secret Another one that was a bit of a challenge for me to figure out. I do think the essence is here, but it's definitely not fear based. I think it's more the desperation, the blind belief in the hunt itself to the point where it becomes about the process, not the end goal. Spaces online around theories like this often get pretty toxic, and this is no exception. Naysayers are ridiculed and shunned, etc etc. So I think this fits. It's also just a fun video.
youtube
THE LONELY: Gaming’s Harshest Architecture: NaissancE and Alienation/ Cities Without People/ Artificial Loneliness You get three videos for this one! Hopefully that makes up for the head transplant video link not working. Cities Without People and Artificial Loneliness have sort of the same vibe going in terms of Why They're Lonely. Gaming's Harshest Architecture is my favourite for this entry though. God I love hostile landscapes. I love places that weren't built for people. Just the forced alienation of those games is PERFECTION. I love all of these videos.

Tumblr only lets me post ten videos per post. If you reblog this without the continuation I'll be sad.

It's that time again! What's your favorite game you played this year?
Hope you're ready for a response to rival last year's post. There are so many good games that I have so much yapping to do about. And, if I may say so, this year was an accomplished one: I made some notable progress putting long-standing backlog titles to rest, as well as some new games that won me instantly. So, let's dive in...
We started off VERY strong with converting one of last year's “I watched this game and it was cool” to “I played this game and it was cool”: Hi-Fi Rush. It absolutely captivated me throughout. It has everything- charm, style, writing and characters that are heartfelt, hilarious, and over the top all at once- and most of all it has an incredibly natural evolution of the high-style high-precision action genre into a rhythm-based brawler where the world moves to the beat. Do I even need to mention it has, not one, but two banger soundtracks? It's a game I look forward to replaying (a rare praise from me), and one I know I'll be in love with for a long time.
Around the same time I was working my way through Sea of Stars- I've talked more about that here but it also really had me engaged as a modern love letter back to the SNES JRPG era. Visually stunning, musically lovely, satisfying gameplay, and a story that I felt gave its well written characters the space they deserved.
Once those were out of the way, I had my mission for the rest of the year: get this backlog CLEARED. Throughout the year, I knocked out:
Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: a game beloved by many growing up that had passed me by. Experiencing it for myself years later, I could tell that I would have poured endless hours into this DS title as a kid, and even today I loved it enough to 100% its quests and Pokedex. Absolutely killer writing and fun gameplay that still holds up today. I am glad I played it as an older adult though for one reason: at this age I know how not to harm my DS’ screen when drawing endless loops.
NEO TWEWY: A sequel to a cult classic I never thought I'd see but I was so, so happy to see it come back. The new game massively shook up the gameplay (it had to, TWEWY for DS is very literally inimitable) but fully kept the spirit and updated it. As the OG wore its 2000s teen culture loud, this game carried the torch forward and gave us the same charm with modern Internet culture. It brought back old characters in excellent ways, added great new ones, had some of my favorite kind of time travel writing moments, and did it all with style, flair, and a rocking OST. In every way a worthy successor to the OG.
Indivisible: Another game I wrote about elsewhere, Lab Zero's sadly ill-fated entry into action platforming. As I said there, I'm glad I could give myself closure on it and I was glad to appreciate the parts of it that did clearly shine- the delicious visuals and combat gameplay. Hopeful to see where those devs end up and what they'll contribute their talent to now.
Triangle Strategy: In terms of strategy games this was a foray outside my usual Fire Emblem interest zone, but it is my friend’s favorite game of all time, so I had to give it a go. The differences took some adjusting, but I ended up enjoying my time with the game. Combat was engaging, visuals had me oohing and ahhing in places, I liked the characters (Julio and Jens my MVPs). But the standout was the story- as deep and politically thrilling as I was promised it would be. The narrative voting/negotiation system offered me some cool moments of choosing my path (or one time having it chosen for me) which culminated in a really really well set up three-way ending split; it wasn't just choosing a side but choosing an ideology, and the characters who wouldn't abide that choice felt completely justified in their refusal to follow you. I didn't get the golden route, but I may go back someday. Without a doubt my best narrative game of the year. (Plus, the final boss of the route I chose was really really tactically engaging and I loved it as much as i feared it.)
Along the way, a few non-backlog titles did sneak their way onto the list…
Case of the Golden Idol: a visually quirky detective narrative puzzle game that scratched the same deductive itch as Obra Dinn, I had a lot of fun deciphering its ersatz mystery. Each chapter is a death tableau and you use clues and logic to piece together who is who, what is what, and what has happened, with each scene leading to a bizarre overarching narrative that makes you want to keep going just to see how wild it gets.
Death’s Door: A little soulslite adventure title about a reaper crow working for Death and trying to straighten up some loose ends. The environments are really well modeled (though a map wouldn't have gone amiss) and the combat system had a satisfying loop with some unique twists. Its final boss impressed me by being a spectacle fight through multiple zones that showed off the boss’ powers thematically, let you learn what the boss was doing in each phase, and wasn't a drag to retry (the usual danger with set piece fights that keep shifting areas).
Blasphemous: One of those “classics” of the modern indie metroidvania space, and one of the first to get overtly Soulsy with it, I finally got the chance to try it and it showed me just why it deserves its "classic" status. The writing was very Souls and the platforming very vania, both excelling in their own way. I really loved the sheer variety of collectibles, that's a strong point in my heart for any metroidvania. I absolutely adored the music, a masterwork of Spanish guitar tracks I still listen to. And visually the game’s strong Spanish Roman Catholic aesthetic absolutely oozed artistic passion, and it was clear that so much work went into its visuals… including the surprising amount of (well-animated) gore. Which leads me to…
Nine Sols: if I had a nickel for every soulslike metroidvania I played this year that turned out to be quite unexpectedly graphic, these would be my two nickels. But content warning aside, I can't sing Nine Sols’ praise enough. Its gameplay was thoroughly polished and at every turn designed to help you feel like a kickbutt martial artist warrior, running up walls and surviving lethal enemies with perfect parrying and a unique attack to give that iconic ‘dash past enemy, beat, they explode’ rhythm to the fights. Then it sells that mastery by making enemies increasingly lethal, requiring more and more skill, but the floor never ramped hard enough that I was frustrated (though the last two bosses had me baffled for a while). Exploration felt rewarding with a lot of cool and useful items to find, and seeing this game’s beautiful blend of "Taopunk" futuristic + traditional Oriental environmental designs was a treat unto itself. And lastly, there's a gripping story that unfolds as you get to know its characters- Yi, your mysterious protagonist, the friends he makes, and the enemies he ruthlessly cuts down.
Are we done yet? Almost, I promise.
As of writing I'm in the middle of Echoes of Wisdom and Ghost Trick, so those, while both great titles, will I think be their own posts. All that's left then is to acknowledge the games I played that I didn't, or couldn't, “beat:” the multiplayer ones.
I played a bunch of MtG with my friends, and I played a lot of Civilization VI with other friends, and those both took up many happy hours. If this wasn't too long already I'd tell you about unstoppable bunnies and definitely not werewolves, or my friends and I allying to conquer the world. But I knew when I got my switch recap today that there's a clear standout in hour count alone: It's not a surprise to you or to me, it's Splatoon freshwater-freaking 3.
How could I not give it the most love for this year where I fell harder into it than ever before? Where my elite Salmon Runner friend helped me climb to dizzying new heights of EVP rank 999? Where I appeared on so many friend’s multiplayer streams for Splatfests and Big Runs? Where I took it upon myself to fill out my weapon collection 100%? Where I did Side Order runs until I knew every floor by name? Every one of those things has given me a cherished memory… but none more cherished than attending an honest-to-goodness music festival in this game, with my friends, reminiscing on past triumphs, on the importance of living in the present, and with the thrill of looking to the future. I loved Splatoon 3, and with the Grand Festival, it felt like the game, the devs, and the community gave me that love right back.
That, among all of these games’ memories and experiences, is the one I think I'll treasure longest.

Video games are cool. I'm so, so glad they're real.
#i talk a lot tag#long post#you give me a wonderful gift in the excuse to make this post.#i'm sorry (i'm not sorry) about the length#time to go listen to three wishes and reminisce again#hi fi rush#sea of stars#pokemon ranger#ntwewy#triangle strategy#case of the golden idol#deaths door#blasphemous#nine sols#splatoon#splatoon 3#it's a fine time to be alive

PJO au
So I had a random thought about the pjo au. Annabeth is enid and athena's daughter right? So like where did Enid meet Athena and how did she impress her enough for athena to pop out their baby? Or was athena simply impressed at everything Enid had managed to accomplish for the gods during her quests (before and after exile)?
Oh and also what do you think the gods in general thought about Enid's exile from chb? Zeus specifically though cause thats his kid even if it's doubtful that he genuinely loves her. Do you think they would care at all or be disappointed that their perfect soldier was tossed away because of jealousy and something out of her control?
And in honor of Epic's Wisdom Saga, which is amazing, did Calypso try to seduce Enid during her stay on ogygia? Did she try to keep Enid there with her like she did to Odysseus?
honestly i dont think we ever even settled whether annabeth was a relationship kid or just randomly snatched up by enid first after settling down
but lowkey, if its a relationship baby then i can see athena simply getting close to enid when she becomes zeus' lapdog for a few years. Then with athena giving annabeth ending up being the reason for why enid stopped working for the gods
Zeus? he's insulted sure because how dare they reject his blood? but then he realizes that with camp not tying his daughter to mortals, its easier to get her on his side instead and that's all he needs to be satisfied. In the end, he got what he wanted. A dog.
as for calypso
my thought was Enid probably turning 16 when she stumbled onto calypso and gets stuck for a year and a half smth in ogygia time. When she comes back, its just been a few months, her birthday has passed and she's physically 17 smth
maybe it was Zeus' attempt to keep her away from the prophecy, who knows
So yes, i think calypso would definitely try to keep enid there. I don't see why she wouldn't. Maybe she thought enid could be different, being a girl but Enid has too much responsibilities to allow herself to fall and thus let everyone down. So she does whatever she could to leave
Calypso sees all this, sees that Enid looks like she could reciprocate but this duty to the gods makes her act otherwise (her pov) and its why she's a bit more bitter about everything in the later pjo books
ALSO YEAHH, SHOUTOUT TO EPIC THE MUSICAL
BANGER!
