Playing Doctor

A/N: My starter piece for the Horror Bang Exchange. Thank you to @sstewyhosseini for looking this over 🖤 @aceghosts including you since you asked to be tagged when this was posted.

Raccoon City was in ruins. 

After a week of, what felt like, hell on Earth, the city had been decimated. One single bomb extinguished the last flicker of light. Not that there was much left after the virus had taken hold of its occupants. Adults, children, hell, even animals gone in the blink of an eye, turned into nothing but snarling and lumbering husks of themselves.

Save for a few lucky survivors, one of them being Charlie. 

It had been a surprise to almost everyone, including herself, that she had managed to make it out in one piece. Her? The runt of her platoon?  It was more than luck that got her out of there, it was a goddamn miracle.

“How did you manage this?,” she asks herself, green eyes transfixed on the cascade of bubbles trailing down her bruised and reddened body. 

It’s not that Charlie isn’t a capable person, far from it in fact. But, throughout her life she has always been second best. Second best sharpshooter in Montana; the one always getting a participation trophy. There are no billboards proudly displaying her face for all to see, no parades to welcome her home.

She is no prodigal daughter.

It doesn’t matter to the rest of the world that she survived a catastrophic event well beyond what most people are capable of imagining. No, all that matters to anyone that’s in the know, and for all she knows that really could be anyone, is that she was an employee of Umbrella. An enemy of the state now.

But, at least she isn’t alone. She never really had many encounters with Carlos while they were both still mercenaries, both on different platoons and stationed in different locations, but she knew enough about him to know that going on the run with him wasn’t the worst thing she could do. Not anymore at least. 

Being on the run was lonely, though. For the first day Charlie had laid in her motel room, too stressed to sleep and too anxious to go visit her newfound ally. It didn’t stop her gaze from lingering on the connecting door that led to his room, constantly hoping that he would make the first move and come to her.

After just a few hours of solitude and trying to send signals with her mind to the room next door, Charlie had given up. How could she just sit around moping about when the one person who could understand what she’s going through is right there?

Which is how she now finds herself in his shower, her delicate fingers poking and prodding at the bruises littering her skin; blood and dirt pooling at her feet. Yes, she had lied and said her own was broken and only producing cold water, but she could tell from the look in his eyes that Carlos had wanted company too.

“Are you alright in there?,” the aforementioned man calls from behind the door, distracting her from injuring herself any further. “The water doesn’t stay hot for too long here either. Now the water pressure on the other hand, that’s -”

“I’m fine,” Charlie calls out, interrupting him. She chews on her lip as she thinks of what to say next. She doesn’t want to leave the comfort of the shower if she’s being honest with herself. Once she emerges from her cocoon of steam that means she has to go back to her own room and she doesn’t want that, as childish and dumb as it may seem.

She doesn’t want to be alone.

But she has to face her fears. She survived an onslaught of zombies that lasted a week, she should be able to leave the bathroom, not even her own bathroom, and see if Carlos actually does want her company or not.

After a few more moments of letting the water scorch her battered body, she finally emerges. As she dries herself off she eyes the oversized robe that she had found hidden in her room. She doesn’t know where it came from or who wore it before her, but she doesn’t have many options with her only clothes still covered in sewage and blood. 

“Wow,” Carlos says as she walks out of the steam-filled bathroom, dark eyes scanning her figure with a playful gleam. “You look refreshed.”

Charlie wants to roll her eyes, give her usual snarky reply to the comment, but she doesn’t. Instead she blushes; freckled cheeks turning a shade of crimson she didn’t even know was possible. 

“You were right about the water pressure. Felt like a nice trip to the spa.”

Sitting on the bed with a wince, Charlie notices the bags and containers of fast food laying about on the table her companion is currently sitting at, her stomach growling despite the pain.

“You okay there?”

Carlos stands as he sees her face contort in pain. Fuck. And here she was thinking she was being subtle.

“I’m fine,” she holds up a hand, trying to wave him away. “Is that,” she pauses, shooting him a soft smile in an attempt to distract him. “Is that the strawberry shake I asked for? You actually ordered it?”

Carlos sighs, eyes glancing back at the table before he picks up the drink. He looks like he’s about to hand it over to her, his arm outstretched and if she wasn’t in so much pain she could reach out and grab it. But he doesn’t. 

“How about we make a deal? You let me take a look at your injuries and I’ll give you your milkshake. Does that sound good?”

Charlie’s eyes linger on the drink, drool forming at just the thought of the creamy concoction hitting her taste buds. Jesus, she’s hungry. 

“Fine.” She lets out a huff as she undoes the belt of her robe, letting it fall open to expose her mess of a body. 

It doesn’t faze her when his eyes immediately spot the massive bruise that has made its home on the side of her torso. After working for Umbrella she’s gotten used to changing in front of her teammates, but she does almost jump out of her skin when his fingers tentatively touch the sore spot; both from pain and shock.

“Jesus.” 

Carlos lets out a low exhale as his calloused hand runs down her side, brow furrowed in concentration as he takes it all in. “Why didn’t you come to me sooner? Did this happen when you were thrown?”

“I dunno. I guess so?”

Charlie shrugs, trying to play it cool despite the agonizing pain she’s currently in. But the memories of the police station flood back to her in a wave. 

That creature outside the locker rooms, its skin inhumanly pale; almost translucent, and its brain matter partly exposed, had cornered them. It looked like one giant, disgusting hairless cat guarding its territory. When it noticed them it had lashed out, whipping her into the vending machines. 

She had hit it with such force that her body had left a dent, despite how tiny her frame is, and cans of soda came careening down upon her, one particular can of Sprite bursting and fizzing its contents all over her head. She’s pretty sure the scent of lime and shit will now be embedded into her skin for the rest of her life.

Except for now you smell like him.

The thought alone sends a shiver down her spine as she watches Carlos inspect the cuts and bruises on her arms and torso. She had come into his room and used his room and used his shampoo, his lotion. It feels way more intimate than she was expecting.

“Here.” Carlos holds up her shake for her to take before pushing himself to his feet. “Just wait here while I grab my first aid kit and I’ll patch you up.”

“Can’t I eat my chicken tenders first?”

Carlos laughs softly as she pouts up at him. “Don’t worry, princess. I’ll have you fixed up in no time.”

Charlie bites down on the inside of her cheek at the pet name. Princess? Really? She knew some of the people she had worked with had thought of her as prissy and high-maintenance, but Carlos had only just met her this week. Unless…

Oh.

The realization that he’s flirting with her dawns on her suddenly and she perks up, as much as she can, at least. With everything that happened in Raccoon City she hadn’t even had time to process any type of emotions, let alone that she might be attracted to him. But, as Carlos comes back, first aid kit and supplies at the ready, Charlie realizes almost immediately that she is. 

She is very much attracted to him.

“Wow. You weren’t lying about playing doctor, were you.”

Charlie looks up at him through her lashes, milkshake cradled in her hands. She can see the corner of his lips quirk up at her words and she sucks on her straw to stifle her own smile. 

“Playing doctor, huh?” He lays everything next to her before he sits down, the bed creaking underneath his weight. “You make a terrible patient, you know that, right?,” he teases.

Moving the left half of her robe aside, Carlos begins to gently cleanse and disinfect the scattering of small cuts alongside her arms and torso. It burns more than she would care to admit and Charlie can’t help but hiss as he drags the gauze over her skin.

“Sorry.” 

He looks up at her sheepishly, dark eyes filled with a gentle kindness. It makes something inside of her stomach flutter. 

“I wish you had come to me sooner, so far it doesn’t seem like they’ll get infected. But this one,” he pauses, his fingers graze the bruise on her side as a frown starts to form on his face. “This one might need some extra attention.”

Charlie scoffs. No fucking way is she going to the hospital right now. Yes, she is in excruciating pain and yes, it hurts to both sit and stand. But going and getting it checked out after what happened in Raccoon City? Not a chance in hell.

“Go to the hospital and have the government catch up to us and question us about our affiliation with Umbrella or stay here and have you do your best to help me take care of it.” She holds up her hands as if weighing the options. “I think I choose the latter.”

Carlos sighs in response. Charlie knows he means well, and she does genuinely appreciate the concern, but their employers not expecting them to make it out of the city alive put them in quite the dangerous predicament. 

“It shouldn’t be us who’s on the run. Those motherfuckers need to pay for what they’ve done, what they’ve put us through.”

“I know.” 

Her voice is quiet and she bites her lip, inwardly wincing as her teeth connect with cut flesh. She doesn’t know what the future holds and she’s uncertain about how to feel about her past, but despite everything the present isn’t quite as bad as she imagined it would be.

“Listen, I want to be able to fix this,” he says, gesturing at her injuries. “But that doesn’t look good. You could -”.

Not wanting to hear anymore about the potential risks of not seeking medical attention, Charlie leans forward, cutting him off with a simple, chaste kiss. She wasn’t intending on doing that and pulls away almost immediately, mouth agape and cheeks flush from embarrassment.

“Oh, fuck. I don’t know what came over me.”

Carlos doesn’t let her get another word in, taking his chance to interrupt her, his hand cupping her cheek before leaning in to kiss her. Unlike hers it’s neither gentle nor soft. Instead, his lips greedily capture hers in a way that brings out a different hunger in her.

She whimpers as his teeth tug on her lower lip, a trickle of blood from her cut trailing out. It’s devouring and all consuming; exactly what she needed after everything that’s happened to her recently. After a few moments she pulls away. She wants more, she needs more, but she knows now isn’t the right time. 

“Wow.”

Charlie peeks up through her lashes at him, an innocent, almost girlish expression on her face. What has gotten into her?

“Yeah. Wow.”

Carlos rests his forehead against hers and for a couple of minutes the two just sit there, their breath heavy as his thumb strokes her cheek. Unable to handle the silence any longer, Charlie sighs exasperatedly. 

“Can we eat the chicken tenders now?,” she whispers, eliciting a chuckle out of Carlos.

Maybe this was always supposed to happen, their paths crossing despite all the horrors they’ve seen. It’s certainly a nice thought.

(Klaine) If I Can Make Your Heart My Home - (Klaine Reverse Bang 2023) Life in New York City and working in the restaurant industry wasn’t exactly what Kurt Hummel had expected it would be. He’s lonely, stressed out and miserable. He’s almost ready to throw in the towel and return home to Ohio when a chance meeting with a musician in Central Park changes everything. (Warning: an angsty rollercoaster of a ride. Soooo many cameos from Glee characters! 😉)

(RWRB) Puppy Love - (RWRB NYE gift exchange 2023) The cold snowy day that Henry Fox discovers an abandoned beagle puppy in an alley brings handsome, flirty veterinarian, Alex Claremont-Diaz into his life. Alex is a single dad, recently moved to NY with his young son who Henry hasn't met yet - or so Alex thought. (Fluffy kid!fic)

(Klaine) Sanctuary - (Klaine Word Scramble 2023) Crown Prince Blaine has stumbled into a secluded glade, trying to escape the horrors of the bloody war his father had brought upon their kingdom. Mourning his beloved older brother and faced with the burden of taking his place in the kingdom, Blaine yearns for a place to hid from the world to deal with the issues weighing on his heavy heart. He encounters a mysterious elf, the guardian of the magical spring that Blaine has mistakenly defiled, whose growing connection to his life the young prince can't ignore. (Inspired by an idea/ artwork by @datshitrandom and @justgleekout)

It is 1893. Vogue Magazine is in its second year of publication.

One of its most popular writers, Kurt Hummel, is both worshipped and feared by his readers - his ability to cut down or to uplift those yearning for social acceptance and acknowledgment rivals the influence that even those of the illustrious Four Hundred had.

When Kurt is assigned a new illustrator for his column, he is not pleased. In fact, he despises Blaine Anderson on sight. How could he not, after how their previous first encounter had ended . . .

(RWRB) I approach, and I withdraw (tentative title) - Historical fic - Alejandro Diaz was still a boy when he followed his father into the thick of the fight for Mexico's independence. A series of unfortunate events, however, led him and his family to flee his home and to adopt new identities for their own safety. Years later, after he finds himself well ensconced in his new life as an attaché to the office of the new American ambassador to England, Alexander Claremont soon finds his past catching up to him. (Inspired by these historical paintings by @stormtrooperjeff17004 as well as artwork from @artofobsession seen here and here.)

(RWRB) Shaken, Not Stirred (Spy!AU) - CIA Officer Alex Claremont Diaz is not new to working on joint operations with other foreign agencies. He does it often and he does it well, which is why his superior, Zahra Bankston, never hesitates to assign them to him. What he wasn't expecting that morning was to be put on a new assignment with his least favorite MI6 operative, Henry Fox - and that they had to use being a newly married couple as their cover to get the job done. (Inspired by this drawing by @noodles-and-tea )

(Klaine) Cuffed (a D/s and soulmate story and prequel to my first ever fic, Trick or Treat) - - Musician Blaine Anderson has always been lonely sub, yearning for a place to belong and someone to belong to. Kurt Hummel is the an overworked and high in demand designer - a Dom with no time to sit and relax and focus on what his needs are. When an old friend hires Kurt to revamp his new club, Kurt's life becomes intertwined with Blaine's in a way neither of them could ignore.

(Klaine) Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie (Day 2 /Bikini - Klaine Advent 2023/ PWP) - A casual little fashion critique while the boys are on a well needed vacation, leads to a little outdoor fun. (Set in my Trick or Treat AU)

(RWRB) how ardently i admire and love you (online auction!AU) - Alex is desperate to find the perfect birthday gift for Henry, and eventually finds himself in an online bidding war for the one unique item that he knows his boyfriend would just adore.

(Klaine) I Know You Wanna Take Me Home (tentative title) (Klaine Valentines Challenge 2024/Pretty Woman!AU) Well established business man, Kurt Hummel never thought he could find anyone of substance among the escorts at Dalton House. But after being convinced to visit the upscale club by his friend, Kurt's mind is quickly changed once he sets his eyes on a beautiful boy in a gilded cage who was up for auction that night.

(Klaine) Untitled Klaine fic (Klaine Advent 2022) - Set in my Klaine superhero AU - Under The Cover of Darkness) Blaine decides to go home with Kurt for the holidays and doesn't make the best first impression with Kurt's parents.

(Klaine) Untitled Klaine fic (Feudal Japan!AU) - based off of novel The Tokaido Road - On a personal mission to avenge the murder of his father, Kurt travels the Tokaido , braving its dangers and interesting characters on the way. As the son of a nobleman, Kurt travels in disguise, unaware that the person who sanctioned his father's murderer has also sent Blaine, a talented and deadly ronin, to find and kill Kurt as well.

(RWRB)- the phantom touch of your hand (tentative title) - (Fantasy/cursed tattoo fic!AU) Two young swordsmen are determined to vanquish a sorcerer who has laid a tragic curse on them both. The problem is, the curse keeps them from being together at the same time, doomed to travel alone, one by day, the other by night - the only reminder of the other being the cursed tattoo burned into their skin.

(Klaine) - Untitled Klaine fic (While You were Sleeping!AU) - Kurt Hummel always wanted to live in NYC - his dreams were to be on Broadway. Being on the Broadway stage that is. Not working on the corner of Broadway and 44th in one of those coffee/food carts parked out on the street. Things for him change the day that Cooper Anderson, Kurt's gorgeous repeat customer whom he secretly fantasizes about, nearly gets hit by a bus. After following him to the hospital, Kurt gets mistaken for being his crush's fiancee which should have been his dream come true - until he meets Cooper's sweet down to earth brother, Blaine.

(Sebklaine) Let you put your hands on me (College threesome AU) - heavily influenced by "one of those movies" - wink, wink . . - Kurt's frustrated ( in more ways than one) and his good friends and new roomates, Blaine and Sebastian, find a way to help him out.

(Klaine/RWRB) - Untitled fic (Scheherazade/ 1001 Arabian Nights !AU) - A lone traveler gets captured by a band of sex slavers in the desert. After being subjected to the horrors of slavery, the young man gets rescued by a desert prince in disguise, chosen to be his sole consort. Every evening, the consort tells his prince a story for him amusement. - planning a series of probably shorts all in the same style. Maybe it'll be a collection to do with other writers? Not sure yet. Might alternate with either Henry/Alex being the Prince and Consort and Blaine/Kurt being the characters in the bedtime tales or vice versa. Or maybe create 2 OC to be the Prince/Consort and have the other four boys be the characters in the shorter stories. I'm assuming it would be alot of mature/explicit shorts - but wouldn't mind a mix of other ratings in between as well.

(RWRB) burn baby burn (magical/fantasy AU) - Based off of this Tumblr prompt - When royalty calls, Alex knows, as a swordsman for hire, that the payout is going to be lucrative. So all he has to do is face a dragon and save a princesss from it and he should be rolling in gold for the next few months. Right? Alex finds out quickly that there is no princess to save. . .but there is a dragon. A dragon named Henry.

(Klaine) Baby Won't You Light My Fire (magical/ fantasy AU) - Based off of this Tumblr prompt- Blaine had assumed his latest quest would be an easy, run-of-the-mill job. Seemed like it was going to be an easy protection detail for the son of a blacksmith. What Blaine soon realizes is that this job was NOT what it said on the tin.

(Klaine) Blood, Sweat and Tears (a mythical/magical/supernatural beings AU ) ( Klainetober 2024) - Blaine Anderson finds out after stumbling into upperclassman Kurt Hummel during a NYADA Halloween party that there is a whole other magical world of beings existing along side everyone else.

(Klaine) It Came Upon A Midnight Clear ( a Nutcracker/ Historical AU) - Inspired by a gorgeous Klaine Secret Santa 2024 gift I recieved from @kurtwarbler. You can see the artwork here. - It is Christmas. Kurt Hummel is still mourning the death of his father when he receives an unexpected gift: a nutcracker passed down from his mother that will lead him on the most amazing adventure.

up here, i'm floating [Mollytrix, M, 1.2k] — for the @hpsaffics Secret Santa Exchange. This is possibly one of my fav ships. I'm glad I got the chance to write them as angsty as I wanted.

Kinktober 2023 [Multiship, E, total 15.5k] — technically a series but my first time participating in Kinktober. I was worried I wasn't going to finish all the days in time.

Honestly no idea yet. I have a lot of ideas on the back burner but none that are MUST DO RIGHT NOW. But I will say that I'm excited for bunch of fests like @hptransfest @ladiesofhpfest @hptriadfest and @hp-rarepairs

3️⃣ Top 3 biggest improvements in my writing over the past year

Smut!! I've developed my smut writing a lot. Kinktober really opened my eyes to a lot of kinks as well 👀

Tone: I think I'm getting a lot better at matching tone in my writing for consistent characterizations and building atmosphere

Estimating word count: I've gotten so much better at looking at an idea and predicting how long the final story is going to be.

2️⃣ Top 2 resolutions (ways I wish to improve my writing/blog) for the new year

FINISH A LONGER WORK!! This was on my resolutions from last which I didn't complete lol. It's okay, I'll try again this year.

Harry Potter has a tiny dick. It’s just a fact of life. The Chosen Microdick, the Small Saviour, the Boy with an Itty Bitty Package. And oh, how Draco loves it.

7. What's the story or fic that you're most excited to work on or share next year?

OH. I really want to finish the story I began for the TLT Bang that I got stuck on - I need to massively edit if I can pull off the horror vibes but I love what I had! I'm also really excited for some upcoming fic exchanges early in the years, especially Id Pro Quo, because the prompts are always so inspiring (I wrote multiple fics for it this year that were FUN, and also got excellent gifts, too.) AND there's a TL Roy/Jamie fic I haven't even started but I KNOW I want to write it (time loops) (sort of) (you will see)

31. What's a recurring theme that showed up in your works?

According to my AO3 tags "Power dynamics" (that tracks.) According to myself... I really like messy relationships! They're fun to write about! That holds across all fandoms <3

Also when I got into Ted Lasso I made it my mission to throw in Real Football Trivia into my fics for fun, because putting blorbos in semi-plausible situations is like half the appeal to me, so "long author's notes about association football details" has also been a constant for 2023 Elle.

Dear Author of the Hockey Holidays 2023 fic exhange

Thank you for participating and yay for writing for me! I’ve always been super excited about every gift fic I have received, and I’m looking forward to the privilege of receiving the fic that you want to write.

That said, some guidelines on my preferences as a reader and some reasons why I chose the pairings in my request below.

I'm a Canes and Team Finland fan. That doesn't mean that I'd prefer you to write the Canes pairings or Finnish players in this exchange! Just a heads-up, when choosing side characters or secondary teams, please don't be too mean to my faves.

Likes: I like a mature, nuanced view on human nature, characters who have their flaws and shortcomings; characters with dubious morals but maybe sort of a good heart. I love good characterization and character dynamics, be it romance, porn or a gen fic studying personal development of an athlete in his sports career or group dynamics of a sports team.

As themes/tropes I like friends to lovers, fuckbuddies to lovers, enemies to lovers. I like my filth: scheming, pwp, Locker room gang bangs, Winner’s room. I love equal partners, but I also find status imbalances & age and size differences HOT.

Dislikes: a/b/o, mpreg, tentacles, body horror, gore, rule 63, suicide/self harm. I'm not into BDSM AU -- Dom/sub undertones, BDSM elements and kink in smut are very welcome but not the predestined dynamics universe stuff. I don’t want to see any mentions of Alexander Ovechkin. No slander of irl SO's or writing them as villains, but I’m OK with them existing in the story, even if it involves cheating the spouse with the ship partner. Fights aren't a huge turn-on for me.

If you're writing Finnish characters, please don't use google translated Finnish or phrases picked from a dictionary without consulting a native level speaker for beta help.

About AU:s: I like mundane, realistic AUs. I'm mostly into spy / politics / crime / war stories at the moment, and I like band AUs. No high fantasy, please. Some magical realism / supernatural elements are fine if they are what you like to write. Werevolves or vampires? Team vampires, definitely. (But you know what's WAY better: angels. I just might have a bit of a religious kink.)

Blake Wheeler/Jacob Trouba: Ex teammates meet on a new team. Has the hierarchy between them shifted when Wheeler has now lost his captaincy over Trouba, and Trouba has established himself as a needed brutal force in his new team? I'd love these dynamics explored, and I don't mind if it has darkish, nasty elements. I don't mind unhealthy dynamics or even violence, but if you see the situation as a chance for healing, redemption and soft landing, go for it.

Sebastian Aho (b. 1997)/Teuvo Teravainen: I'd appreciate an updated look at the current state of my Finnish Cherubs OTP. Teuvo is having a monster season and the hottest stick (lol) on the team, does Sebastian reward him? Or is he jealous? Is he proud? (Please note that Sebastian is jacked, hairy and feisty on the ice but still so devastatingly pretty)

Teuvo Teravainen/Kimmo Timonen: Why not a melancholic story of Teuvo carrying on a relationship to an older married man for years? And for what? Does it ever reach a breaking point, and what then?

Sebastian Aho (b. 1997)/Justin Williams: These Tumblr text posts by @andreisvechnikov say it all: "he's a lot of things…kinda like daddy to me sometimes" - Sebastian Aho on then captain Justin Williams and watching Justin Williams get his Canes' HOF thing and knowing Sebastian "he's kind of like daddy to me" Aho was there because he loves him

Sebastian Aho (b. 1997)/Roope Hintz/Jesse Puljujarvi: I'm curious. Did they have a thing at Junior Worlds 2016? Or before that? Or after that? Tell me!

Sebastian Aho (b. 1997)/Brent Burns: Sebastian expressed a strong interest to be invited to Burnzie's ranch, saying he's "into that kind of stuff" and he'd "grab his own backpack and go". I'd love a messy smut version of how it went down over there. Dom Brent please.

Sebastian Aho/Brent Burns/Jordan Staal: Bottom Sebastian getting it good from two large men. That's all. But, like, a plot-driven war or spy AU could work too.

PLUS ONE: I totally forgot to nominate this crack pairing before it was too late: Roope Hintz/Sergei Fedorov. They look SO alike, don't they? I've always wanted to read an AU fic playing on their resemblance; they could be con artists, thieves, spies or whatever pretending to be father and son but being nothing of the sort. If this tickles somebody's imagination enough to prompt a tiny treat, I'd be ecstatic.

Top 25 Stealth Christmas Movies

A “stealth” Christmas movie is one that takes place at the holiday season, or contains key holiday scenes, but isn't specifically thought of as a Christmas film. There are literally hundreds of movies that fit this description (see our 2018 Stealth Christmas Movie Showdown and a more extensive Stealth Christmas Movie compliation for more), but here are my personal favorites, ranked by both by enjoyment and how worthy of holiday-time viewing I feel they actually are. And, as with all of my holiday lists, re-watchability is also a big factor in rank …

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) - One of my all-time favorite films any time of year, this classic rom-com begins, and ends, at the holidays.

Die Hard (1988) - John McClain spends a grim Christmas Eve at Nakatomi Plaza. Plus, this one won our “stealth” Christmas movie showdown back in 2018. Yippie-ki-yay! 

Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - This star-crossed love story starts on Christmas Eve, when Meg Ryan hears Tom Hanks on a call-in radio show during a holiday drive home.

Holidate (2020) - R-rated rom-com big on laughs, but still full of heart. A romp through all the holidays, bookended by a pair of Christmas celebrations. Lighthearted, and lots of fun.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - Before RDJ and Shane Black teamed up for the holiday-set Iron Man 3, they did a bit of a dry run with this much darker, and far more R-rated, noir comedy-thriller. Definitely not what I was expecting from a Shane Black joint—in the best possible way.

Love at First Sight (2023) - While the holiday content here is mostly decor and the name-checked December 20-21 travel dates, this super-charming, British rom-com from Netflix is worth a watch any time of year.

Love, Simon (2018) - The plot pivotal social media post in this super sweet teen rom-com, which precipitates Simon’s coming out to his family, occurs over Christmas break.

Better Off Dead… (1985) - The French foreign exchange student grows close to Lane, and finally reveals she speaks English (quelle surprise!), over the holidays, in this silly ski comedy that, somewhat surprisingly, still really holds up. And who could forget the holiday aardvark costume Lane’s dad dons?

Gremlins (1984) - Steven Spielberg comedy-horror classic takes place fully at the holidays and is an (almost) all-ages delight. Just don’t feed it after midnight.

Shazam! (2019) - More Christmas-centric than even Iron Man 3, if this hadn’t been released in April, I’d be tempted to say it was a flat-out holiday classic, rather than just a very sweet and fun superhero movie that takes place at Christmas.

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) - The second-best action movie set at Christmas, Geena Davis is a suburban mom who learns she used to be a secret agent thanks to Samuel L. Jackson.

While You Were Sleeping (1995) - Sandra Bullock spends the holidays with her comatose fake fiancé’s family, while (oops) falling in love with his brother. (Another one that, if not for its April release, would probably be thought of as just a straight-up Christmas movie.)

Millions (2004) - Set between Christmas and New Year’s, this under-seen gem about a fictional currency switchover is a delight anytime, but particularly at the holidays.

Bros (2022) - Billy Eichner’s very fun R-rated rom-com not only co-stars Hallmark holiday hunk Luke Macfarlane, it has a running gag about “Hallheart Christmas movies” that existed, according to Eichner, long before Macfarlane was attached to the project.

Iron Man 3 (2013) - Shane Black really loves making stealth Christmas flicks and this superhero movie where Downey eschews the suit for most of the film is one of his best. (He also wrote, but did not direct, The Long Kiss Goodnight.)

Funny Farm (1988) - This Chevy Chase comedy about an idyllic small town that turns out not to be, ends with the truculent townsfolk doing their best Norman Rockwell holiday impressions for cold, hard cash.

Clueless (1995) - Did you forget the whole middle of the movie is Christmas-set, including the “tragic Val party” that’s decorated to the hilt? Me too, but it’s a comedy classic worth watching anytime.

Mean Girls (2004) - This high school comedy’s unforgettable holiday talent show features an iconic, and plot pivotal, performance of “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Rise of the Guardians (2012) - Spanning a variety of holidays, Rise features a wintery Jack Frost and an all-business Santa Claus, making it not specifically Christmas, but certainly holiday appropriate viewing.

The King’s Speech (2010) - The impetus for the King seeking help with his stammer is his desire to address his subjects at Christmas. Not especially festive, but a great movie.

RED (2010) - Bruce Willis’ retired hitman is happily decorating for Christmas before he’s pulled back into the assassin life in this super-fun, action-comedy that also stars Helen Mirren.

Fighting with My Family (2019) - This based-on-a-true-story tale hinges on a holiday trip home for its wanna-be WWE star, and is much better than any movie about professional wrestling, produced by The Rock no less, has a right to be.

Wonder (2017) - Only a bit of this Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson-led family film is set at Christmas, but the heart-tugging story of Auggie definitely resonates for the season.

Baby Mama (2008) - Most don’t remember, but this Amy Poehler-Tina Fey comedy begins, and ends, at the holidays. There’s even a Christmas song!

Baggage Claim (2013) - Slight but charming rom-com where flight attendant Paula Patton flies all over the world to find “Mr. Right” before her sister’s New Year's Eve wedding, only to discover he might have been next door all along.
