I've been getting more messages in my in box lately, it's been nice to get all that action...( ba da bum) no really, it has been so cool to hear your thoughts. When ever I write back to asks or DMs, I hear my words in the accent Tony Curtis uses in my favorite (non-Elvis) film, Some Like it Hot, when he calls Marilyn's character sand says "Hello My Dearest Darling." It's a line that lives in my head, because his accent is such an exaggerated, silly caricature of Cary Grant. Thought I would share so it can get stuck in your head too!

A sketch for the Winteriron Server Flash Bingo! For the prompt "Cooking together". Medieval/Fantasy AU: Prince Tony (in disguise) has been on the run for a while but now, the Ten Rings recognized and found him. He only escaped with Bucky's help, and still got his chest injured. Now, Bucky is travelling with Tony (who he assumes to be maybe a little smarter/more high born than he lets on, but definitely does NOT assume him to be the missing prince!!). Tony has a rough idea where to go: back to his kingdom where the power structure has been changing... To get there means travelling together, as Bucky agrees to go with him, and over their time together, they get closer and closer. And they have to navigate both the everyday troubles (how much food they have left, finding shelter, long days of walking) as well as the more troubling things (Tony's wounds, occasional bandit attacks?).

I read a LOT of books this year, which is always exciting. I also neglected to do much in the way of write ups during the year proper, so here are little opinions about all 84(!) book-books I read. I love to yap about what I read and I would love to talk about any and all of these. (Graphic novels and comics are gonna be their own post because there are also too many of those.) Bold are my top faves, headphones are things I read as audiobooks.
JAN
Less - Andrew Sean Greer
Shockingly funny book on a writer’s midlife gay crisis. I was a little mid on the end but the prose here was fantastic.
The Bullet Journal Method: Track the Past, Order the Present, Design the Future - Ryder Carroll
Beyond Bullets: Creative Journaling Ideas to Customize Your Personal Productivity System - Megan Rutell
Read about a million of these for a program; this was the only one worth recommending if you want to try journaling. (The official guide is Fine but it throws a lot at you at once.)
The 365 Bullet Guide: Organize Your Life Creatively, One Day at a Time - Zennor Compton
Lettering for Planners: A Step- - -Step Guide to Hand Lettering and Modern Calligraphy for Bullet Journals and Beyond - Jordan Truster and Jillian Reece
This should not have been a book.
Afterparties: Stories - Anthony Veasna So
I’ve been meaning to read this for years and years-- So was a friend of a friend-- and it was as excellent as I expected, and also made me tremendously sad that we won’t get more writing from him.
Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space - Amanda Leduc 🎧
This is theory for a general audience but I still wished it was more robust-- Leduc’s arguments had about the academic rigor of a tumblr post, which is a shame.
Aftermath: Life in the Fallout of the Third Reich, 1945–1955 - Harald Jähner 🎧
Nation-making and identity formation in the aftermath of fascism. There has been a lot of writing about the German project of the post-Nazi era, but this was a very solid read.
Water and Salt - Lena Khalaf Tuffaha
I came across Tuffaha’s gut-punch of a poem, “Running Orders,” online, and while the rest of the collection doesn’t always hit as hard, it’s still fantastic.
Bring Up the Bodies - Hilary Mantel 🎧
Reading this and The Mirror and the Light at the beginning of the year really ruined me for all other prose for the entirety of 2024, tbh. Nobody does it like Mantel.
Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes: Whiteness and Its Borderlands in American Comics and Graphic Novels - Josef Benson and Doug Singsen
After reading Birds of Prey in October-December I really wanted to read some writing on whiteness in comics. This didn’t touch on what I was most interested in exploring and I did come away from the book thinking damn. None of that book was nearly as good as Tony Wei Ling’s fantastic piece on Crumb and alt-comics’ self-hagiography in SOLRAD.
Mending with Boro - Harumi Horiuchi
Make and Mend: Sashiko-Inspired Embroidery Projects to Customize and Repair Textiles and Decorate Your Home - Jessica Marquez
Mend!: A Refashioning Manual and Manifesto - Kate Sekules
Mending with Love: Creative Repairs for Your Favorite Things - Noriko Misumi
Mend It, Wear It, Love It!: Stitch Your Way to a Sustainable Wardrobe - Zoe Edwards
Can you tell I taught a visible mending class in February? Honestly any one of these are a good pick if you’re wanting to get into visible mending. This is the best for giving you a whole menu of techniques to choose from and having very accessible instructions.
Modern Mending - Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald
Mending Matters: Stitch, Patch, and Repair Your Favorite Denim & More - Katrina Rodabaugh
Creative Mending: Beautiful Darning, Patching and Stitching Techniques - Hikaru Noguchi
This is the best one for getting into the ethos of visible mending. It’s a deeply kind book.
Joyful Mending: Visible Repairs for the Perfectly Imperfect Things We Love! - Noriko Misumi
Visible Mending: A Modern Guide to Darning, Stitching and Patching the Clothes You Love - Arounna Khounnoraj
The Mirror and the Light - Hilary Mantel 🎧
Once again. Nobody is doing it like Hilary Mantel.
FEB
Finna - Nino Cipri 🎧
Anticapitalist multiverse Ikea relationship drama should have been my entire jam but this book was simply quite bad.
Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy - Cathy O’Neil 🎧
Are you ready to get depressed about data? This is a great book for your liberal mom. I could wish it were more anticarceral but for what it’s actually covering it does a great job.
Vegetables Love Flowers: Companion Planting for Beauty and Bounty - Lisa Mason Ziegler
Garden planning :)
Flux - Jinwoo Chong 🎧
If you liked Severance (the show) or have ever projected some identity feelings onto a not-very-good TV show, this is a book for you. Imperfect pacing but still gripping, and I’m excited to see what Chong does next-- this is his first book.
Ocean’s Echo - Everina Maxwell
The premise of this book is simply so sexy. And overall the book is too!
The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles - Malka Older
Yayyyy Mossa and Pleiti return! I love this series and I loved this book.
A Land with a People: Palestinians and Jews Confront Zionism edited - Rosalind Pollack Petchesky, Esther Farmer, & Sarah Sills
I don't really have a write up for this. It's powerful and well written and I would recommend it.
Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time - Teju Cole
Best book I read all year, frankly. Teju Cole writes about art and culture and being alive when the world is falling apart like nobody else.
MAR
The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi - Richard Grant 🎧
Oh you hate to see a British guy get sucked in by white Southern niceness. (Richard Grant, in this case, is the British guy.) A lot of the stories in this were excellent but Grant gives way too much credit to folks clinging to the tattered remnants of the Old South.
Ottoman Brothers: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Early Twentieth-Century Palestine - Michelle U. Campos
Excellent historical antidote to the idea of perpetual struggle in Palestine. Also interesting read just for looking at how citizens of Jerusalem were using national and imperial identities for their political agendas at the time.
An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us - Ed Yong 🎧
Lovely book that resists anthropomorphism and rendered me a font of “hey babe can I tell you a cool snake fact?” for about three weeks.
The Barbizon: The Hotel That Set Women Free - Paulina Bren 🎧
You know I should have expected a book like this to be exactly what it was and yet. In addition to the sort of milquetoast stabs at feminism the structure is bad-- it devolves into Sylvia Plath’s life story and doesn’t really recover. I don’t mind reading a book about Sylvia Plath but I would like to plan to do that going in.
The Hunter - Tana French
Only Tana can manage to write a book that is mostly just pretty normal conversations for 75% of its runtime and yet made me unbelievably stressed the whole time I was reading. Creeping dread! We love it.
Shades of Grey - Jasper Fforde
I last read this in high school when I was so excited to see that the sequel would be coming out any day now. Over a decade later, any day at last arrived! So it was time for a reread. The sexual politics of this book are insane, which I didn’t pick up on in 10th grade, but it is still an extremely clever and enjoyable book.
Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus - Bill Wasik 🎧
I learned a lot of fun facts in this book but it was rambling and also I do wish books like this would stop trying to overstate the importance of their topic. Rabies can’t be the source of vampire legends AND zombie legends AND werewolves. (Zombies in particular. We know where those come from and it ain’t rabies!)
The Transcriptionist - Amy Rowland 🎧
As a former transcriptionist the idea of a mystery that revolves around the intrinsic weirdness of being the fly on the wall was very appealing to me! This wasn’t quite the book I thought it was but I still enjoyed it.
City Editor - Stanley Walker
If you can ignore the amount of name-dropping of people who were certainly famous in 1934 newsrooms but I have certainly never heard of, there are definitely some amusing anecdotes. Walker writes with a dynamism and bombast I would love to see in any kind of writing nowadays. However it is also a book written - a newspaperman in 1934 so it does hit every single -ism like it’s trying to get a pinball high score.
The Times: How the Newspaper of Record Survived Scandal, Scorn, and the Transformation of Journalism - Adam Nagourney 🎧
This book is exceedingly kind to the NYT and it was wild to read this the month that the Hamas mass rape story very publicly fell apart. However reading it did give me a very clear picture of how that story, and stories like it, happened in the first place.
Chasing History: A Kid in the Newsroom - Carl Bernstein 🎧
Of all the “how do newspapers work?” books I read in March-April to prep for a fic I didn’t end up being able to write, this was my favorite. Bernstein is an engaging narrator and this answered my questions about how a story actually happens (particularly pre-internet.)
APR
Beacons in the Darkness: Hope and Transformation Among America's Community Newspapers - Dave Hoekstra
This ping-pongs between case studies in a way that would be totally fine in a feature story and is unforgivable in a book. But the case studies are interesting!
Newsroom Confidential: Lessons (and Worries) from an Ink-Stained Life - Margaret Sullivan
This is more memoir than NYT hagiography, and thus I enjoyed it much more.
Ocean’s Godori - Elaine Cho
I’ve got to stop reading SFF that came out this year. Unfortunately, it is part of my job to be aware of SFF that comes out this year. The pacing on this was UNBELIEVABLY sick-- the inciting plot incident only occurred halfway through the book, and the first 60 pages were us being fairly clumsily introduced to too many characters. The author’s end notes effusively thanked her editor and I think she should not have done that because a really solid editing job could have made this into something I really enjoyed. (People who work in publishing I’m sorry about publishing.)
Bombshell - Sarah MacLean
If your whole plot is going to hinge on a Deep Dark Secret, it better be deep and dark.
Time's Echo: The Second World War, the Holocaust, and the Music of Remembrance - Jeremy Eichler 🎧
I got this for my grandma for Christmas and that was a mistake because this book is so depressing. If I had thought for two seconds I would have known this! However. I did like it!
MAY
JUN
Desegregating Comics: Debating Blackness in the Golden Age of American Comics - Qiana Whitted
Really loved this one.
Super Bodies: Comic Book Illustration, Artistic Styles, and Narrative Impact - Jeffrey A. Brown
This book would have been fantastic if the author had a) had any art historical or visual analysis training and b) done research about manga and the ways its styles have been used in the west. As neither of those were true this book mostly made me wish it was another, better book. Good comics recs though.
Red Side Story - Jasper Fforde
Long-awaited sequel! This is an entirely solid book, though I wish I could have read it when I was a teen because it would have rocked my shit then.
JULY
The Ladies Rewrite the Rules - Suzanne Allain
Really the only thing you need to know about this Regency #girlboss book is that at the very end of the book, which made almost no pretenses to historical accuracy wrt attitudes about gender roles, the main narrative tension is the love interest’s plans to go off with the East India Company to make his fortune. The other characters have no moral qualms about this; it’s proposed with the same air that a modern book would talk about someone going to college across the country. It made me feel completely insane.
Escape Velocity - Victor Manibo
You know when you read a book and you say wow, I can’t wait to watch this as a Netflix special, but boy was it not very good as a book? That. Also I really wish we had spent more than about two scenes with the servants on the space hotel, so that I could care about them as people and not as plot devices!
Making Our Future: Visionary Folklore and Everyday Culture in Appalachia - Emily Hilliard
Engaging stories of modern West Virginia.
Belonging: A Culture of Place - bell hooks
The writing on exile in this did make me cry while I was eating lunch.
AUG
Appalachia on the Table: Representing Mountain Food and People - Erica Adams Locklear
More historical than I expected but solid writing on how perception of food affects perception of people.
What You Are Looking For is in the Library - Michiko Aoyama
I really didn’t expect this to get me but I am not immune to lovely, small-scale stories of people being kind to one another in community. Teared up on desk.
SEPT
Watercolor Is for Everyone: Simple Lessons to Make Your Creative Practice a Daily Habit - Kateri Ewing
This was for a class and everyone liked the class!
Hot Summer - Elle Everhart
I am so hit or miss on contemporary romance. This was a messy, delightful reality show romp. Light on drama, but the robust character relationships are the star of the show.
Loving Mountains, Loving Men - Jeff Mann
The poems here are generally better than the prose, which gets a bit repetitive at times. The poems are also generally very good, and a few of them made me cry.
Second Night Stand - Karelia and Fay Stetz-Waters
I wish I had known going in that the authors were a married couple looking to tell “a story about a healthy queer romance.” All love to them, but I am simply not very interested in reading a story that bills itself that way! And as you might imagine there was a lot of therapy speak and very little narrative tension. Sex scenes were great, though, and if you want a very queer comfort read you might enjoy this.
You Should Be So Lucky - Cat Sebastian
Very chewy character relationships. Sebastian manages to tell a story that feels of its time (1950s sports/journalism) while not being deeply bleak, which is a balance that many many queer historical romances completely bomb.
Lady Eve's Last Con - Rebecca Fraimow
Delightful lesbian screwball comedy. In space!
OCT
Slippery Creatures - KJ Charles
The Sugared Game - KJ Charles
Subtle Blood - KJ Charles
Imagine if Lord Peter Wimsey had a passionate love affair with a gruff and tortured soldier recently back from WWI. That’s basically these books and I inhaled them. Shout out to detectorist for the rec!
The No-Show - Beth O’Leary 🎧
About 60% of the way through this book, I said, oh man, I hope that the twist to this book isn’t [redacted]. That would make me so mad. Well, it was, and it did!
Drunk on All Your Strange New Words - Eddie Robson 🎧
Scratched the itch for sci-fi mystery, and the premise is fantastic. The narrator does a mostly excellent job but her American accents are distractingly bad, so if that will bother you read the book.
Deviant Hollers: Queering Appalachian Ecologies for a Sustainable Future edited - Zane McNeill and Rebecca Scott
Most of the essays in this are great! Every so often I get in my head about whether I can claim an Appalachian or Southern identity and whether I should do any writing on the subject. And then I read an essay that makes a lot of claims about “I centralize queer, trans, rural southern voices” and then does not proceed to actually demonstrate how they are doing any of that work, and go oh wait I’m actually fine.
NOV
Better the Blood - Michael Bennett 🎧
A pretty solid thriller elevated by a very solid conceit: a Maori detective is investigating modern-day killings connected to a 19th century execution of a Maori chief by a group of British soldiers. This suffered a little from being written by a screenwriter who very clearly had certain shots in mind while writing (sometimes that works in prose, sometimes it doesn’t) and also from periodic intercut scenes from the killer’s POV (also a convention that works better in TV) which did undercut whodunit tension. Also the main character is a cop. But I ended up finding her sympathetic, which is a HUGE ask given the subject matter.
The Stars Too Fondly - Emily Hamilton 🎧
Hated this. I tried to be measured in my initial review but every single part of this book was simply so bad. I wish I had those 11 hours of my life back. If this author is your friend I apologize, and also I hope she didn’t base a character on you, because every character in this book acts like a 15yo.
Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy edited by Meredith McCarroll & Anthony Harkins
I worked my way through my own booklist this fall and this was one of the best books on it. I kept trying to put it on display at the library but our copy was checked out the entire time. Give this to your uncle who won’t shut up about Ohio.
The Pairing - Casey McQuiston 🎧
First half of this was way more compelling than I expected it to be, and then McQuiston makes the WILD choice to switch POVs entirely and permanently halfway through the book. And I found the second character pretentious and given to fits of purple prose (he describes the first character as a “superbloom” at one point and also won’t shut up about the most art history 101 pieces of art) so I did not particularly enjoy the book as a whole. I will give it points though for having a pretty non-cringey “hi i’m actually nonbinary” conversation, which is astonishingly rare.
Jonny Appleseed - Joshua Whitehead
This was initially a book club pick for a meeting that didn’t end up happening, which is a bummer because I would like to talk about this book with more people! A lot of lines in this are going to stick with me-- Whitehead shifts through time and place with deftness and grace. If you like K-Ming Chang’s Bestiary I think you will enjoy this-- Whitehead revels in the body in a similar way.
I Heard Her Call My Name: A Memoir of Transition - Lucy Sante 🎧
If you’re not already a little familiar with the NYC art scene in the 70s and 80s you may not enjoy this, because Sante name-drops a lot. I am, and I loved it-- it’s a lovely meditation on growing old and hitting your breaking point. Sante is also a fantastic writer, and this is an excellent counterbalance to the particular type of trans writing that is very very common online. (Nothing wrong with that writing, but you need a balanced diet.)
The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society - CM Waggoner
I loved Waggoner’s previous books and I did end up enjoying this one a lot! It’s an enjoyable send-up of the cozy mystery genre.
Regarding the Pain of Others - Susan Sontag
A reread for my yaoi zine piece! Not only does this still hit but I think it’s a particularly apt piece of writing to be reading right now, when we are daily surrounded - images of suffering. Sontag, as ever, does not have any neat answers for us, but she does make you think more deeply about the world that surrounds you.
DEC
How to Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom - Johanna Hedva 🎧
I loved parts of this, and I hated other parts, which for me is a good sign about a book of theory. I have more thoughts about disability activism and being online that don’t fit into a quick write-up for a book.
Ramp Hollow: The Ordeal of Appalachia - Stephen Stoll
This took me six months to read, but mostly because I was reading it occasionally on desk and I kept having to return the ebook. It demands a little bit more sustained attention than I was giving it! It’s an excellent overview of the history of land use in Appalachia through the 1930s and it gave me a lot of good context for the mountains I grew up under.
The Forbidden Book - Sacha Lamb 🎧
Unfortunately, I think I would have liked this a lot more if I hadn’t read When The Angels Left the Old Country first! It’s a perfectly nice YA story-- but it definitely feels YA, and I don’t tend to enjoy reading a lot of YA.
Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am - Julia Cooke 🎧
I still don’t really know how I feel about this book. It does avoid some of the pitfalls of #girlboss nonfiction, but also it falls right into others. Mostly I wish it had engaged really at all with the people these women met on their travels, or like. Literally anyone Vietnamese.
Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation - Eli Clare
Oof ouch my bones!!! This hits on a lot and does it with incredible grace.
To Say Nothing of the Dog - Connie Willis🎧
I wish my grandma was still alive so I could recommend this to her, because she would have adored it. Delightful time travel Victoriana.
The Message - Ta-Nehisi Coates 🎧
I really admire the move of making the entire second half of your highly anticipated book about the injustices you saw in Palestine, and I hope it pays off and every NPR listener who loved Between the World and Me picks this up and reads to the end.
Everyone in this Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin
This book reads like a 200-page panic attack, which is not a diss! Really revels in the situational hilarity of anxiety/OCD/something unspecified.
Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore
Okay I had to add this one in because I finished it after making my post. This book (contemporary queer Jewish romance with a bit of the supernatural) was so lovely and deeply felt and often laugh out loud funny. The family relationships are the real star although the romance is also very sweet.

Under the Lonesome Moon 1/5
"New Moon"
Cowboy!Bucky Barnes x reader (male) Golden Era of cowboys - 1865s
Summary: Tired with the simple life of your little town, you can only hope the cowboys who’ve arrived will change it all.
Warnings- Mentions of death, violence, traumatized lil kid
Authors Note- Im so excited for this series!! School started back up and I have a lot of hours, but this will hopefully come out in a timely manner lol
Chapter 1/5
===============================================
“Kid! Hey, kid!” Tony called up into the barn. His voice echoed around because of the shitty acoustics of the ranshackled place. You could hear him huffing when you didn't answer right away.
Though the acoustics must be somewhat decent, his yelling reached your ears didn't it? You groaned at the unpleasant awakening. Laying up in the loft, the timber beams made your back ache with stiffness. Tony and Natasha had each offered you housing, a warm bed, and all other forms of stability, but you didn't take it.
Taking it meant you were stayin’. And you weren't stayin’.
“What?” You called back, voice rough with sleep. You sucked in a big breath, rubbing the sleep from your eyes and sitting up. The sun peaked through the slits of the roof. Golden strands that didn't fully reach the loft floor, Tony did a damn good job at building it all those years ago.
“Ms. Natasha wants to see you, Kid.” Tony said. You could hear the exasperated grin in his voice as he opened the barn doors fully. The low thud of the doors sliding open and hitting the end of the rails was the final wakeup call you needed. Most days you were better at getting yourself up and presentable, today wasn't one of those days.
You grabbed your raggedy jacket and dust off the hay on your pants as you stood. Glancing down at the barn floor, morning sun spilling in, it was about a 10 ft drop. You wiped your hands dry on your worn out jeans and grabbed the main pillar. It was a rough wood, but never seemed to give you splinters as you clambered down.
A bit of dirt billowed up as your feet firmly planted on the ground. Tony just nodded towards the bar down the road as he made his way to the wooden plow. It hadn't been running as smoothly as he wanted, apparently.
“You really should take her up on that offer,” Tony tells you, making his way over and dusting some of the remaining hay from your jacket. He looked sympathetic, smiling lightly and avoiding looking at the obvious hole in your elbow.
At your half confused expression, Tony continues, “The job, kid. You already work for pay, why not take her up on the free bed?” He grins and lays a solid slap on your back.
You grunt out and stumble a step forward, lopsidedly smiling back, “What? And leave this luxury?” You gesture up to the loft, old hay you had piled up to sleep on was just visible from the ground. Your hat was hung on a rusty nail on the pillar, your nicer shoes sat underneath.
“Barns not that comfortable!” Tony hollers at you with a chuckle as you make your way down the road. You don't reply, just turn back towards him and wave him off with an eyeroll.
It wasn't about comfort, not to you. There was a long while you did sleep in a real bed. One with nice sheets and a full pillow. When you had made your way to town 13 years ago, you had thought you'd stay forever. Plus, who was gonna make an orphaned 10 year old sleep outside?
Well… Mayor Nicolas “Fury” nearly made you.
In all fairness, he had good reason to worry you were bringing bandits with you.
This town was never your home, and it was odd to think that you had lived here longer than not. When you were little, maybe 9 or 10, your Pa’s farm was struggling. He and your Ma made the choice to sell it and try to move to the cities. There was some whispering about the railroads. A good chance for your Pa to put his strength to use and make some money. It would also have  been a more stable future for you when you became old enough.
Walking down the beaten path to the bar, you glanced out at the landscape. The little town of Stanlow was easy to miss if you didn't know you were going to it. Surrounded by waves of hills, lush grasslands, and a river just around the bend, it was seen as a little oasis. That was probably why just about 500 people called it home. Tony had it best, you came to quickly learn, a family cattle farm that was closer to town than anyone else. All the other farmers and ranchers lived a quarter of a day's ride away- at best.
It was actually Tony who had brought you to town. According to others, he had been riding back from a friend's farm and saw a group of horses and men surrounding a covered wagon. When he had gotten much closer, the men were quick to grab their knapsacks and ride off.
He had worried it was a planned attack, and knowing Stanlow wasn't too far, he kept his guard up as he neared the wagon. The horse that was pullin’ the wagon had been spooked and ran a good hundred feet away and the wagon was on its side.
What he hadn't been expecting to see as the dust settled was a young boy hunched over a body. No, two bodies.
Depending on who you asked, the rest of the story is a bit fuzzy. Tony told you the story rarely, so you pieced it together from the drunkards and gossips who didn't care about if you knew or not. Tony had to basically drag you away from your Pa, who had gotten fatally shot by the bandits almost immediately. The only thing that coaxed you away from the only comfort you knew was your Ma, who wasn't gonna make it. Even 10-year-old you could see it in the way her face paled and the blood pooled in a dark red spot on her stomach. She knew about Stanlow, it was a town your family had skipped in order to shear some more time off their trip, and it was close enough that she trusted Tony to bring you there safely.
That was all you really remembered, too. Being pulled away from your Ma, crying so hard her face was a blur, hoisted up onto a horse and riding away. You cried yourself to sleep. Not waking up until the next day, in a large bed with an old quilt draped over you. The lights were low and a single candle was lit by the door.
It wasn't your house, it wasn't your bed, it wasn't even your Ma and Pa’s bed… so, you lashed out.
Initially you did, at least. The first day was spent with Fury, Ms. Natasha, and Tony trying to calm you down. It took Doctor Banner a few tries to sedate you enough so that they could get you food. Then after all that you clammed up. Hardly spoke a whisper, Ms. Natasha theorized you were mute from the shock.
Maybe you were, the first few months were really blurry for you. You never told them your name, so they just settled on calling you “The Kid” which got shortened to an affectionate “Kid”. You didn't remain the silent and scared little kid for long, though. You were like every other young boy in town, just less restrained. All the others had their parents to scold them, to give them a curfew, work to do. You didn't have that, and Ms. Natasha and Tony didn't feel it was their place to enforce it.
They didn't see you as their son and you didn't see them as your parents, but that didn't stop them from protecting you.
You got into a little too much trouble. Hitting balls around and breaking windowpanes, roughhousing a little too hard and getting into full on fights. Hell, even playing marbles and hide-and-seek made you into a little hellion.
A few nights in the sheriff's cell helped. A little. You weren't angry, as much as Doctor Banner and Mayor Fury thought. You had just too much energy. Tony helped mediate it by getting you working in his barn most days, then at night you'd clean Ms. Natasha's bar in return for a bed. Once you were 16, you started looking for a way out of town. Odd jobs, travelers with offers, even considered braving your way East to go to the factories and railroads your Pa had sought.
But no one would take you. Sure, a few people gave you some farmland work. You'd take care of horses, help during the harvests, but word got around fast that you couldn't stay out of trouble. Jobs washed up quickly. Ms. Natasha always had a soft spot for you. She offered you everything you could've wanted. You were great at the bar, personable and charming enough to sell the more expensive drinks, but it wasn't what you wanted. It was slow, a few fights here and there kept your interest, unfortunately those had to be trampled down quickly. If Fury had to get involved in a bar fight, you were screwed.
Speaking of… As you neared the bar, you waved hello to Ms. Natasha. She was a woman you were glad was always on your side. A no-nonsense attitude, firm tone, and the strongest liqueur around. All of it added up to a dangerous woman no man would doublecross. Looking back, the nights spent in the sheriff's cells might have not been to keep you in, but to keep her out.
She flashed you a bright smile, pushing open the double swinging doors to usher you inside. You did a small jog and murmured a soft thanks before stepping in. You lightly jumped around the squeaky floorboard that needed fixed, dragged a finger through the grime on a table yet to be clean, and made a mental checklist of the bottles that needed stocked- all while Ms. Natasha said:
“What took you so long? I haven't needed to send Tony to fetch ya in - god,” She puffed her cheeks and shook her head as she looked at the dirty table, “a damn long while.”
“Busy dreamin’ I guess,” You halfheartedly reply. Really you had no good reason, your internal body must've forgotten. Maybe the hay was comfier than you realized.
“Well, you can keep dreaming all you'd like,” She nods, giving you a slightly more stern look, “But there's a lot of cleaning up you've yet to do.”
You sheepishly smile at her as you dig behind the bar for some soap and a less-than-disgusting rag. Yeah… you kinda dropped the ball last night when it came to cleaning up. Rushing to get out ‘cause the moon had disappeared from the sky.
There was something cathartic about looking at a clear sky- no moon with infinite stars- while sitting on the barn roof. It was one of the very few times you truly felt like nothing was happening. The one time your brain stopped thinking and your body didn't ache to move. You wished you could bottle up that feeling and sell it- maybe that’d be your ticket out of here.
“Sorry Ms. Natasha,”
“Nat, Kid, you make me feel old when you say that.”
“Nat,” You correct yourself, standing to wet the rag. You both knew you would go back to the title soon, it was the only manners you seemed to have, “The sky looked pretty, couldn't miss it!”
She chuckled and shook her head, joining you in cleaning up and restocking the bar for later tonight.
“You kids and your daydreaming,” She mused with a smirk, nudging your arm and eliciting a half-hearted eyeroll from you.
But you weren't a kid. You were 20 god damn years old.
The rest of the afternoon went smoothly. You got the major problems all sorted: fixing a wobbly chair, refilling the water jugs in back, heading to Mayor Fury's office down the road for some paperwork- all things Ms. Natasha needed an extra hand for.
It was just an hour or so until the bar was fully in swing for the night. There was Old Jim in the back, nursing a cheap bottle of beer. That familiar ache came back to your chest when you saw Nat talking to him, consoling him over something, maybe encouraging a stronger drink.
Was that your future? Working everyday at the same thing? Befriending drunkards for some extra money before the richer drinkers came by?
Or were you an Old Jim.
Doing so little with yourself that you needed to wash away the ache with some cheap shit.
These thoughts only hurt harder the more you thought about them. So you shoved the feeling down to your toes and recentered your focus onto the bottles you were cleaning. Oh! And you needed to get some fruit from the shop, it would be good to add to some drinks. Or for the few who wanted to snack on those as well as the nuts and dried meat.
You hummed softly to yourself, turning to the window as the sun faded gently into the ground. A sharp orange that drowned out the little blades of grass. This was the type of view you would kill to have imprinted into your brain. The arc of one of the hills as it sliced through the sun, a cloud or two daring to break up the orange with the impending deep blue that quickly faded to black.
“Nat, where do you want the…” You started to ask, drying the last glass bottle, but the sight of four men on horses making their way straight for town stopped all trains of thought. You squinted at the sight, they looked like bandits. They rode horses like no one you'd ever seen before. But that's not what truly caught your attention, it was what seemed to be a gleaming metal arm, and a dark leather hat that made you starstruck.
“Kid!” Natasha scolded, hearing the shattering of glass from the broom closet. She huffed, turning with broom in hand to make you sweep it up. Her brows pinched together when she noticed you were pressed flush against the window. The broken bottle fully forgotten, the rag you had been holding slipped precariously out of your hands.
No, not bandits…
“Cowboys.” you breathed out, breath fogging the glass as a giddiness erupted in your veins.
This was it. Your way out.

What I truly love most about the DC universe is how stupidly large it is. There are so many different Earths and timelines that you can merge it with another pic of media, and you can justify it by saying it's an entirely different timeline. The DCU is so diverse and wide that its compatible with literally everything.
The MCU? Bruce and Tony know each other due to being billionaire playboys with genius intellect and using their skills to become formidable heroes. Thor and Diana know each other, the League of Assassins is aware of Hydra and the Red Room, etc.
Miraculous Ladybug? Diana and Queen Hyppolita (a former ladybug) know all about the Miraculous and Marinette goes to the Justice League for assistance with Hawkmoth. Given the people they've been up against before, Hawkmoth would fit right in. The addition of the miraculous would be very natural to the DCU.
Danny Phantom? A teenaged boy with ghost powers from another realm ends up in Gotham and starts trolling people is something that would definitely happen in Gotham at some point. It was only a matter of time.
I swear the next DCU & Batman crossover fandom is going to be Avatar the Last Airbender or something. With the Justice League adopting these gremlin children. Bruce "I adopt strays every other week" Wayne would see Katara, Aang, Toph, Zuko, Sokka, and Suki and go "Mine." Sokka cracking jokes with Dick, Zuko and Damian getting on each other's nerves, Katara and Alfred bonding over how they have to keep feral children in check, Toph and Jason trying to declare dominance over each other every other second. Aang going around Gotham and following Bruce while he does Batman things, and surprisingly getting along great with Damian over their love for animals (Damian refuses to admit he got excited when Aang allowed him to ride Appa). The spirits in the atla world won't be so far off base in a world where there are aliens, demons, and demigods walking the earth.
Gothamite criminals everywhere would be getting their asses kicked. Soon Gotham has six more vigilantes, four of which have terrifying elemental abilities and the other two can throw hands. Blue Spirit Zuko throwing hands, Painted Lady Katara thrashing people with water and healing innocents, Blind Bandit Toph crushing people into the dirt, Kyoshi Warrior Suki striking fear in the hearts of hundreds, Boomerang Sokka coming up with these crazy but effective plans that give Batman a whiplash, Avatar Aang greasing anyone who hurts his friends.
And the rest of the Justice League are terrified.
Actually you know what?
alta x dc anyone?

How will the TIFB family celebrate during the holidays?🥰🥰 - @professional-benaddict 💗💗
I love this ask so much!!! Thank you and Merry Christmas, @professional-benaddict !!!🩷🥹🩷
TIFB CHRISTMAS:
🎄On December 1st, Peter surprises everyone with an advent calendar he made for them - full of fun activities and Christmas movies to watch. And yes, Daddy, building a snowman is considered a fun activity. Yes, even if it's freezing as fuck out there - it's not swearing, it's repeating your words - and we will get wet and cold.
🎄Tony gets the house decorated as a surprise - everyone goes to bed in a usual interior and wakes up to fairy lights, decorations, and garlands everywhere, inside and outside. Peter is ecstatic. Steve too. Bucky will never admit how cozy it makes him feel (everyone knows).
🎄They're getting the hugest, fluffiest, best smelling tree. It takes a lot of time, effort, and swearing for Steve and Bucky to get it to the car and then to the living room. The decoration process is going for days, has everyone involved, and - even if Bucky will never admit it - enjoying it.
🎄Peter making the hugest presents list (with daily updates) that has everyone rolling their eyes and quickly becomes a meme. Bucky likes to go and read it for giggles like morning news "What's new on The List today?". No one, including Peter, expected Tony Santa to get every.single.thing from it. Except maybe a "real life Gizmo", but the plushie works. "Thanks fuck, we already have one gremlin here" Bucky mutters, earning a signature judging look from Steve.
Inspo for the list:
Tumblr media
🎄Peter goes Christmas shopping with Bucky, to get presents for Tony and Steve. It ends up being the most stressful experience for Bucky, because a) what tf to get Steve; b) stores stores stores; c) people people - the kid talking too much - people; d) Peter decides it's a funny idea to get lost aka hide from him in a very crowded mall.
🎄Peter also goes Christmas shopping with Steve, to get more presents for Tony and presents for Bucky. This one goes surprisingly smooth, with both enjoying it. Bucky accuses Steve in bribing the kid with hot cocoa and a movie with popcorn in the mall's movie theater. But he can't prove anything.
🎄Peter gets a set of charcoal pencils for drawing, and Bucky teases him that he did, in fact, get coal for Christmas. Next morning he wakes up with a charcoal mustache.
🎄Mark and Dum-E get their own very special Santa hat (Mark), antlers (Dum-E), and Christmas bandanas (both). As well as wrapped toys and treats under the tree and in the stockings. Yes, they have their own personalized ones.
🎄Peter gets very inspired by Home Alone. Unfortunately for him, it's not the wet bandits but one of Tony's business partners who comes for a meeting and gets a bucket of chocolate poured over his head (and a very expensive peacoat) after opening the door. When Steve asks Bucky why he keeps chuckling the whole evening, he just genuinely says, "I'm just so glad it wasn't me"
🎄Tony cooks the whole Italian traditional Christmas Eve dinner and then spends half of the night wrapping the presents and trying to make them fit under the tree. So Christmas morning (Peter wakes him up at five) has him yawning, armed with a bucket-sized mug of coffee, but really happy.
🎄Bucky is included in the family Christmas card photoshoot. And no, he's not crying, he's just suddenly having allergies to this...sweater, yes, Steve, nothing else.
🎄Peter invents creative ways to swing mistletoe above Bucky and Steve's heads in all kinds of places. Clearly enjoying Steve blushing and Bucky grumbling
🎄Everyone's humming Christmas music without even realizing it because it's all they have on playlists the whole season.
Feel free to add your ideas please, I'll be super happy to see them🩷🥹✨️

SteveTony Weekly - September 22 - Week 38
Tumblr media
Hi, friends!! I hope you’re having a good week and reading lots of excellent things. Quick note that MTH is back! So if that’s your jam, sign up as a creator, or get ready for auction week coming at the end of next month! Ok, here we go with this week’s recs:
rutted old road by meidui
It’s his loneliness screaming, out here in the mountains where nobody else is, begging to know—are you like me?
my thoughts: i didn’t know that this was @meidui’s work when I started reading it, which was very late at night and very very silly of me. It’s all the things I love about her stories, angsty and sweet and lyrically gorgeous. Read it.
Buried by NotEvenCloseToStraight
When Howard Stark demands Tony work at a dig site in S.America one summer to "build character" and "learn about life", Tony is furious.
But then he meets soldier/archeologist Steve and falls in love with blue eyes and a perfect smile. Just as they are ready to move forward together, Steve leaves abruptly with no explanation and breaks Tonys heart.
Ten years later, Tony stumbles across the file for the old dig site. He's determined to visit and shut it down, but discovers that instead of a village, the dig has unconvered a temple and actually needs MORE money to stay open. A security team is hired to protect the staff and the artifacts they find, and Tony comes face to face with Steve Rogers all over again– except Steve is bearded and BIGGER and way more dangerous than he used to be...And Tony likes it.
When the camp is attacked, Steve jumps into action, snatching Tony and running into the jungle to escape and work their way towards safety.
But long days and nights together bring back old feelings, and one day Steve takes a risk and asks Tony to give them another chance.
Will Tony say yes? Or is his heart buried too far for the soldier-turned- archaeologist-turned-mercenary to find it?
my thoughts: i’ve read this before but I’m a sucker for trapped together life or death situations, and NCTS does it beautifully.
The Tchotchke Cha Cha by Arukou
What started off as one impulse buy souvenir snowballs into a constant flow of knickknacks from all over the world, and Steve is starting to wonder if it's more than just Tony being nice.
my thoughts: tony showing affection through random gifts is never not gonna hit. Steve being sweetly besotted and just a tiny bit jealous? Perfection.
You and Me and Him by navaan for magicasen
If you live in the same house, it’s really hard to keep your secrets. Especially if you are good friends. He doesn’t mean to watch as closely as he does, but it’s obvious to Steve that Tony and Iron Man are in a relationship. Right?
my thoughts: identity porn!!! Who doesn’t love it.
Dancing With Your Ghost by LunaStories
Tony never thought he'd be here, getting his wings groomed by Captain America of all people. It was too intimate, but Steve had offered and he was too weak to resist.
my thoughts: grooming as caretaking and steve neglecting himself and taking care of tony? Perfect.
you're a bandit like me by Areiton
He feels, sometimes, like a junkie, waiting for the needle to slide in, for the poison to hit his veins, and then--
The portal clears, and Tony grins up, laughing at something Steve can't see, and the air rushes out of him.
Staring at his husband, a version of him--Earth 21982, he reads absently--Steve feels almost lightheaded with relief, and he whispers, "Hey, sweetheart."
my thoughts: a little morally grey Steve and grief? Sounds just about right.

I have some questions about the funeral pics. I haven't seen the footage myself but Ive heard that Tony was there holding the baby. Was he there with the baby? If so, wouldn't the baby want to reach for his real parents ?
Please refer to my previous recent post of Kevin v Sam pics. Tony was not holding a baby. In fact I do not think he was present at all. He was subsequently photoshopped into that train wreck of a photoshop 'funeral pap shot'. Please see below
Tumblr media
Kevin was the black masked bandit holding a baby. They cleverly played some musical chairs in the church in an attempt to bamboozle. It only worked on some.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They had to quickly come up with a game plan for Mr Balfe's sudden and unexpected demise and the panicked foray resulted in the ultimate revelation of the truth. We got the proof we were all finally looking for under very unfortunate and tragic circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the baby and to who he belonged to. I feel that it's irrelevant at this point. Sam was clearly in attendance not only merely attending his 'costar's' father's funeral, but sitting right next to her, embracing her and and comforting her mother. Whether the baby was theirs and being held by uncle Kev, or whether it was a nephew of Cait's doesn't matter.
If you watched the stream carefully, it was evident that SC did turn around to face the baby and look at him. It was also clear that Sam was very familiar with another little boy who went up to the alter. So familiar in fact that when he turned his head sideways to show us his big ol forehead (purposely imo), we saw that he was authoritatively directing the young lad and instructing him what to do. That raised my antennae. Sam even stood up. We see you Captain .
It was such an explosion of truth and such a threat to their almost 10 year whopper of a lie some serious damage control was pencilled in. Hence why they dragged out McGoul for the 40 day memorial service and vanished Sammy boy.

HIIII, I head canon that baby Peter love to bring lost puppy home to Tony and when Tony say no, Peter and that puppy will give him their biggest, saddest and most TRAGIC puppy eyes ever! What did Tony do?
AWWW 🥹❤️I think they would probably adopt all of them.
Pepper: Tony, WTF?!? I left you with Peter for ONE week and you adopted TEN FREAKING DOGS?!?!
Peter hated the idea to give them to some shelter and since dogs didn’t have any breed they couldn’t find any people in the Tony’s circle, who Peter could trust with adopting Bluey, Bingo, Chilli, Bandit, Muffin, Socks, Pom Pom, Rusty and Stripe.
So Tony built their own shelter, where Peter would come every day to play with all of the dogs he would rescue. And of course they would do their best to find everyone their sweet home.
Well, except Bluey, Bingo, Chilli, Bandit, Muffin, Socks, Pom Pom, Rusty and Stripe. Now they all live with them in the Tower and sleep in the bed with Tony, Pepper and Peter. And Tony think he might go insane. But after awhile they get used to it. And even started to love it. What things we do for our kids..
(I hope you are having a good day🥹❤️)
