Belgium Day 1
The morning was simultaneously rough and smooth at the same time. I only got about 30 minutes of sleep the night before so I was running on fumes but I somehow made my way to St Pancras International for my morning train into Brussels.
St Pancras is so peaceful in the early morning. It’s almost surreal.
I manage through the train ride, into the city, checked into my hostel at Brxxl 5 City Centre Hostel, and was ready to ACTUALLY start my Brussels exploration day. Stop #1 is the famous: Manneken Pis.
I’m not winking. I’m just so tired that opening my eyes all the way would put me into an awakeness level that I just wanted ready for.
Along my tourist route for the day, I made sure to nestle in a mini walking tour of several chocolate shops since I wouldn’t have time for a proper guided chocolate tour of my own. Stop #1 was Rudolf Braun where I picked up a bar of Dark Orange & Almonds chocolate. From there I headed over to Stop #2 of my mini chocolate tour: Choco-story, a chocolate museum. The museum is quite small and really peaceful since it was just a random Monday. They provide a self-guided walking tour that gives you some information on cacao, the history of chocolate making, etc. For such a small museum I really enjoyed it. It only took about an hour and it had some really interesting information and they incorporated some samplings and even some live demonstrations toward the end of the museum route.
My favorite part of the Chocostory tour was definitely the live demonstrations at the end when a chocolate master demonstrated the process and gave us some fresh made Hazelnut w/ Speculoos Pralines and Coffee Pralines.
Right nearby the museum was Stop #3 of my self-designed chocolate tour: Planete Chocolate. Picked up a few goodies there and then went to my first non chocolate food stop of the day: Maison Dandoy where I got to try a fluffy and delicate Brussels-Style Waffle along with their world famous Speculoos.
Love watching batch after batch of waffles getting churned out in this tiny shop.
My next Brussels stop was the Grand Palace/Grote Markt. This is a small square and you can easily see the whole thing from the center but it is so ornate, you can’t help but be lost in it for a while.
It was still pretty early on in the day but tourists were already beginning to pool here. A lot of the businesses weren’t open yet but the gorgeous buildings themselves are still worth a visit.
Just a few feet away from the Grand Palace was chocolate Stop #4: Chocolaterie Mary which is apparently one of King Philippe of Belgium’s favorite chocolatiers. I had to pick up one of the queen’s favorite chocolates too which was the sea salt caramel w/ pecan. Absolutely delicious! Though at this point I was feeling quite sugared out so I decided to stop for lunch at Ballekes, a small meatball shop just outside the central square.
Pork and beef meatball w/ Lapin Sauce (onion, raisin, beer) w/ a side of Belgium Fries (and a heeping helping of mayo of course).
After lunch I walked up towards the Mont de Arts. It’s a gorgeous hill overlooking the city with a lovely garden. There were some sling chairs set up and I decided this would be an appropriate spot for a short nap.
A comfy spot for a little afternoon nap before I continue with my day.
After a few minutes of shut eye I continued my journey towards the Palais de Bruxelles. Unfortunately they were closed so this was just a quick pass by.
Exterior of the Palais de Bruxelles
Finally finishing up the last leg of my tour, I passed through the Parc de Pruxelles for a zen afternoon stroll before stopping by the St. Michael and St. Gudual Cathedral and eventually towards the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert.
The glazed ceilings of the shopping arcade are absolutely mesmerizing.
From the gallery I made my final two chocolate stops: Stop #5 at Neuhaus Chocolates and Stop #6 at Leonidas. And with that. I ended my very chocolate (and sugar) filled day.
Some of these were a snack for later but you bet I ate way more sugar in one day than I should have.
I was exhausted and headed back into my hostel. After some time relaxing, I made a new friend named Lukas and we decided to grab dinner together. We wandered the streets and eventually decided on a spot called Brasserie de la Bourse for dinner.
Had to get me a piping plate of Flemish Stew and of course more Belgium Fries.
To end the night, Lukas and I head over to the Delirium Cafe for a drink. The beer hall is absolutely massive. Apparently this was a slow night according to Lukas but even then we had to fight some crowds just to get a drink. But they really have such a stellar selection of brews on tap that it’s worth the hassle.
Just a small peak at what the bar setup at Delirium looks like.
The night ends, not too unreasonably late, back at the hostel where Lukas and I share a couple bottled beers before I head to bed. All in all, not a bad day for 30 minutes of sleep.

A 2-day itinerary for Brussels 01.03.2020
With Brussels being in the centre of Europe, and so well connected, it is easily reachable. For me, this meant a 2hr Eurostar journey from St. Pancras, London. Upon arrival in Brussels, you are met with a typical ‘grungy’-urban, suburb district. The station is so close to the main town square, about a 25min walk, depending on how many photos you like to take, down Avenue de Stalingrad through Stalingrad district. This has a big Moroccan and Turkish influence which is really interesting and shows how culturally diverse Brussels is.
1. Take a free walking tour. These need to be pre-booked but I cannot recommend them enough. The volunteers have such a passion for the city; hence they offer their time. Their knowledge is second to none. Ours was booked for 11 and lasted until 1:30. I recommend tipping (5-10).
2. After this, you will most likely to be very hungry, and, depending on the time of year, also freezing. Head to Sainte-Catherine and eat in Ballekes. This urban café serves wholesome, food, with a big focus on traditional cuisine. There are vegan and vegetarian options also. I highly recommend the vegan meatballs with tomato sauce and sprouts!! My sister loved her beef meatballs, with cheese sauce. This area is very local and has a radiating, happy vibe, where lots is happening.
3. Next, head to the Melting Pot, a vintage clothes lovers dream. It is about a 2-minute walk away and definitely worth the visit. If you are conscious about the fast fashion industry, this is a great shop! The price is 15 euros per kilo. They had a huge array of jackets in particular. The shop was extremely organised and clean.
4. Now head to the European quarter, this is one of the longer walks but there is no point taking transport. By walking, you get to see so much of the city which you would miss otherwise. You go through the Grand Palais, up and through Mont des Arts, past the Place Royale Bruxelles in Koningsplein square and through Parc de Bruxelles. From the top of the park, head straight down Rue Belliard and you will be right in the European quarter. The transition to modernist architecture is fascinating, and the whole district feels both very formal and energetic. Today, head to the House of European History. Check before if there are any temporary exhibitions on and, if there are, allow more time. We went to the exhibition on youth movements during the 20th century which was incredible! The permanent exhibitions focus on the Cold War primarily, but also key events from science to the arts, that marked the 20th century.
5. We now headed to check into our Airbnb, located perfectly in Ixelles. I really couldn’t recommend this Airbnb for two enough if want to be right in the heart of a very local area. It gave us both a different perspective of the city, something we would have missed staying in the tourist traps in the old town area.
6. In the early evening, head into the local district of Flagey. There are numerous independent restaurants but what we found was a hidden gem and I cannot recommend it enough! It was called Takumi, they serve fresh, delicious Japanese cuisine. We tried edamame, gyoza, ramen and the chicken salad and everything was exceptional. Oh, and the home-made iced tea was to die for! The staff were so so lovely and friendly, which really made our meal. The restaurant is tiny, so potentially book if you are a bigger group, but they do not make you feel at all rushed. What’s more, the interior is insanely funky, with red neon lights, Japanese text and posters, so much thought had been given to every minute detail. It really was a perfect meal.
7. As a British person, it is easy to forget that most European cities are pretty sleepy on a Sunday morning. Brussels is no exception. Don’t be fooled by opening hours online, we tried to go into two cafes for breakfast which were both closed! Luckily, we found Fika. A chic, independent café. The coffee was delicious, and the brioche bread melted in our mouths. We were the only ‘tourists’ inside, and the vibe was very local.
8. From here, this is a great location to visit the Parliamentarian. This is such an informative exhibition, we both learnt so much about defining events of the 20th century and how the EU became the institution it is today. Both the Parliamentarian and European House are completely free, including the lockers and an exceptionally good audio guide is provided! Highly recommend. Also, don’t forget to go into the free photo-booth!
9. From here, it is only time to get a waffle. Our tour guide told us there are two types. The smaller, sweeter version (what most people think of) with many toppings being the Liège waffle and the traditional one which is longer. The traditional one is delicious on its own – which is what I tried. Our guide told us that the prices do not vary around the city, and pretty much everywhere has a similar standard. Due to the cold, we opted for Gaufre De Bruxelles, which, right in the middle of the Old Town was a bit a tourist trap, but they were delicious, and the smell wafted around the restaurant!
10. Can a visit to Brussels be complete without trying Belgian chocolate? Absolutely not! Head to Chocomuseum, a brilliantly interactive museum which tells the full history of chocolate, from its Inca origins to the industry in Brussels. Oh… and every half hour there’s a demonstration on how to make pralines… tasting recommended!!
11. For your last few hours in a city I think it’s really important to leave them free. Spend this time visiting anywhere you hadn’t already, or re-vising your favourite spots. Its these independent times of exploration where you find your own jems. Every corner has a different mural, with another story to tell. But if you’re looking for a place to start, try the streets of Matonge.
12. I don’t think there is anything more wholesome than a picnic dinner. Just before we caught our Eurostar home, we popped into one of the Moroccan bakeries called Boulganrie Tazaghine in south Stalingrad (on the same street we took to reach the main square on the first day) to get some snacks for dinner. The owners were lovely, and even warmed up our food.
This really shows how much you can fit into 48hrs in Brussels. The city is small enough to be able to walk everywhere which is what is great, as you are seeing so many interesting sights as you get from A to B. If I were to go back, I would however check out the Musée Magritte and Tich café.

Day 1: Akihabara and Ueno Park
Voor onze eerste dag hier in Tokyo stonden o.a.

Don’t forget your flu shot
It’s that time again to get the annual dose of protection from the flu. (Taylor Ballek | Spectrum Health Beat)
Remember the flu?
It still exists.
And you still should get an influenza vaccine this season.
“The flu has not gone away,” said Russell Lampen, DO, division chief for infectious disease for Spectrum Health. “And like all viruses, it is still looking for susceptible individuals to infect.”
The COVID-19 pandemic, of course, has hogged the virus spotlight for a year and a half.
And last year, influenza numbers fell to remarkably low levels.
But don’t let that lull you into a sense of complacency about the danger posed by flu viruses.
“The lack of influenza last winter was sort of a pleasant surprise and byproduct of widespread masking, social distancing and, likely, increases in remote learning,” Dr. Lampen said.
“As we come into a new fall season and a new winter season where masking is less prevalent and where kids are going to be back in person in school, my concern is that we are going to have increasing rates of influenza again.”
Most people recover from an influenza infection at home. But it can cause severe illness, requiring hospitalization.
“It’s important to remember that people die of influenza every year,” Dr. Lampen said. “On average, we will see 25,000 to 35,000 deaths per year (in the U.S.) from influenza.”
Similar symptoms
Every year, it’s important to get the flu vaccine and prevent influenza illnesses. But this year, it matters more than ever.
“Our health systems are completely overburdened right now,” Dr. Lampen said. “Some of this is related to COVID-19. Some of it’s related to just general health care right now.
“But the hospitals are full. We need to do everything we can do to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.”
The flu and COVID-19 share many symptoms, such as coughing, runny nose, headache, body aches and fever.
Preventing the flu could reduce the likelihood you would have to potentially self-isolate while seeking COVID-19 testing, Dr. Lampen said.
Each year, federal health agencies adjust the flu vaccine to better match the influenza virus strains expected to circulate in the U.S.
Even if the vaccine is not a perfect match, it still can be helpful, doctors say.
Those who get the vaccine—and later come down with the flu—tend to have less severe illness and recover more quickly.
Some people worry the flu vaccine could cause a flu illness. But that is not the case, said Rosemary Olivero, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
People may experience short-term side effects after a vaccination—such as a sore arm or fatigue. But that is just a sign of the immune system gearing up to fight the virus.
“It’s normal and expected—and it’s way better than getting the flu,” Dr. Olivero said.

HORRIBLE.
