大梦归离 fangs of fortune names + titles masterpost
brought to you by @mengyan and @renshengs <3
*note: this is only for what we consider as main characters, or recurring side characters! if you need clarification for a character that isn't here, send either of us an ask!
common terminology:
daren 大人 (suffix) — gender-neutral honorific often translated as Mr. or Ms. (e.g. Pei-daren = Ms. Pei)
xiao 小 (prefix) — little (e.g. Xiao-Jiu = Little Jiu)
jie/jiejie 姐姐 (suffix) — older sister (e.g. Wen-jiejie)
ge/gege 哥哥 (suffix) — older brother (e.g. Xiao-Zhuo-ge)
didi 弟弟 (suffix) — younger brother (e.g. Bai Jiu-didi)
“A-” 阿 (prefix) — added before a single character of someone’s name/address, to indicate affection, familiarity, closeness etc (e.g. A-Heng, A-jie)
“er” 儿 (suffix) — added after a single character of someone’s name & is an affectionate term used by someone (often older) whose relationship to them involves some kind of caregiving; can be romantic or platonic (e.g. Wen Xiao’s foster father calling her Xiao’er)
common mistakes:
referring to someone with only one character—in chinese this is generally considered odd (e.g. Zhuo Yichen as “Zhuo”) and is not recommended unless done in-story (e.g. 蜚 Fei’s name just being Fei).
referring to a character by only their surname (e.g. Pei Sijing as “Pei”). chinese names put surnames before given names. (to call her by just her given name, use “Sijing”.)
referring to a character with a 2-character name by only their given name (e.g. Bai Jiu as “Jiu”). since his given name is only 1 character, it can’t be used on its own. using just the given name generally only works with 3-character names (e.g. Zhao Yuanzhou can be referred to as just “Yuanzhou”).
NOTE 1: calling a character by their given name usually implies closeness and informality. generally it is more common among chinese-speakers to use each other’s full names or their surnames combined with a title.
NOTE 2: to call a character by their surname or 1-character given name, you add on a prefix or suffix (e.g. Xiao-Zhuo or Xiao-Chen with Zhuo Yichen, Wen-jiejie or Xiao-jie with Wen Xiao)
NOTE 3: jiejie, gege, didi, (+meimei, what Wen Xiao called E’shou) are not just addresses exclusive to those of blood/familial relation! they can be used to address anyone younger/older than you and also be used in a flirtatious manner (e.g. Wen Xiao’s “Pei-jiejie” is very different from Bai Jiu’s “Pei-jiejie”)!

thinking about a fangs of fortune modern day law firm au where:
zhao yuanzhou is That Law Firm partner - yes, the one who has been there since the beginning of time and no one knows how or when he joined the firm; he just is a fixture, and who:
disappears mysteriously from his office on occasion (bai jiu, in hysterics: “But I really need him to sign off on this document right now!!!!!!”)
closes cases with suspicious methods (zhao yuanzhou, blinking innocently: “Yes, I just had a little coffee with him and he agreed to settle for a million. Isn’t that nice?” wen xiao, wondering innately if coffee is code for something else: “…yes…”)
has a never-ending rotation of nice, ridiculously expensive suits. even zhuo yichen can’t beat him on this front, and the only one who comes remotely close is li lun (more on this later)
was rumoured to be work-rivals with zhuo yichen’s brother right up to his untimely death. the streets say that zhao yuanzhou deliberately played a card on the last case they worked on together that caused the company they were going after to send hired hitman after them both (the reality was really that even zhao yuanzhou did not expect something so extreme as becoming the target of murderous assassins, and that card was unfortunately a trump card that Needed to be used). zhao yuanzhou survived but zhuo yixuan did not.
has a complicated relationship with zhuo yichen as a result - constantly saves his ass even though zhuo yichen does not need saving thank you very much - takes the hits for him when things go wrong, and feels constantly as though he owes him (zhao yuanzhou, drunk: “hey bro you wanna stab me or something? Just offering.” zhuo yichen: “is that an innuendo? No. And stop calling me bro. The fuck.”)
zhuo yichen as his constantly exasperated counterpart:
worked diligently and was known as a stellar associate before getting promoted to partner on his brother’s unfortunate death - feels rather pressured to live up to his brother’s legacy and do him proud
claims to detest zhao yuanzhou and blames him for causing his brother’s death BUT the secretaries will not stop telling people about the time they saw “Mr Zhuo went into Mr Zhao’s office and draped a blanket over Mr Zhao’s sleeping form!!!!!” - zhuo yichen repeatedly denies this occurrence and zhao yuanzhou doesn’t suggest otherwise; the blanket in question is, however, neatly folded in a drawer in zhao yuanzhou’s office
deep down, he has already forgiven zhao yuanzhou - ever the studious lawyer, he went over the case files from that deal and realised he would have made the same call as zhao yuanzhou, and he guessed his brother would likely have done the same.
never declines a call from zhao yuanzhou to go out drinking even though he makes a lot of grouchy sounds because Someone has to put the man in a taxi home before his self destructive tendencies get the better of him and that Someone is unfortunately zhuo yichen (taxi driver: “you should wake your husband. We’re here.” zhuo yichen, flustered and trying to get zhao yuanzhou’s heavy ass head off his shoulder: “he’s Not my husband.”)
li lun as the barrister whom zhao yuanzhou insists on using on all his cases (zhao yuanzhou: “bc he’s the best, dude”) but who zhao yuanzhou refuses to email or communicate with on pain of death, so zhuo yichen has to send all the emails and have awkward little meetings going through cases with him:
ruthless af in court and tears everyone to shreds (including the judge on occasion)
encyclopaedic knowledge of law rivals zhao yuanzhou
collection of expensive suits ALSO rivals zhao yuanzhou (wen xiao, appreciatively, every time li lun walks into a meeting room in the firm: that man is a dick but he sure has Taste)
his superior taste includes, much to zhuo yichen’s horror: zhao yuanzhou (zhuo yichen, wishing he could dig his eyes out and run them under water: “wen xiao, zhao yuanzhou swanned past the meeting room we were in and i swear to God. li lun was undressing him with his eyes. and then he turned to me and said, i kid you not: seems like zhao yuanzhou’s been spending some time in the gym. i can see his chest muscles have gotten bigger since the last time we met.” wen xiao, having had the downlow from zhao yuanzhou about his complicated on and off situationship with li lun: “mm hm.” zhuo yichen, moaning with his head in hands: “and once he tried to show me a folder on his laptop but clicked on another by mistakes. and it was just filled with files labelled ZYZ1 ZYZ2 ZYZ3 and so on. They were IMAGE FILES, wen xiao!!! IMAGE FILES!!!! PNGS!!!! wen xiao, mentally making a note to blackmail zhao yuanzhou about the existence of those images: “yeah.”)
was the sole reason zhao yuanzhou didn’t get murdered along with zhuo yixuan in the while hired hitman saga (wen xiao: “but why did he have a gun.” zhao yuanzhou, shrugging: “the only time li lun’s into following the law is when he’s in court. other times, less so.”)
Also featuring:
wen xiao and pei sijing as the two senior counsels (pei sijing, when asked why she declined partnership: “ew, why would anyone want a role in partnership, that’s for losers who actually like networking”) who think no one knows that they are in a relationship (yinglei: “they have couple mugs. and i know they are couple mugs because i saw wen-jiejie happily point at them in Soho Home and pei-jiejie immediately put them in her shopping basket.”)
yinglei and baijiu as the baby trainees who are there just to watch the office drama unfold and give each other unnecessary stress about deadlines (baijiu: “what do you mean this was due on the fifth. That’s yesterday’s date.” yinglei: “fuck.” baijiu: “fuck.”)

Mmmmm, thinking about Luo Binghe flying high on his sword when a magnificent bird veers close to him, flaring its wings and catching the buffet of wind around lbh and riding alongside him
The bird looks at him with steely, piercing eyes and delicately reaches its talons out to grip zheng yang's hilt. It settles carefully onto the sword, ruffling its feathers as it balances. Idly, it toys with the hem of lbh's robe, at the tie on his boot.
Lbh is heading to Qing Jing Peak, of course and this bird rides with him the whole way. Approaching the bamboo forest, the bird catches flight again, quickly looping around lbh before folding its wings and diving.
Not to be outclassed, lbh also tucks himself in and dives. Unerring, the bird and lbh are heading for the same figure.
LBH finally has to pull out of the dive, jumping off Zheng Yang and sweeping it back into its sheath in an elegant movement while the bird, like an arrow, drops almost directly onto Shen Qingqiu, who is waiting.
At the last moment the bird pulls up, it's talons reaching out and it's wings breaking its speed. It perches on sqq's arm, almost a third to half the size of sqq himself.
"Oh you brought home Binghe! How good!" Sqq scratches the bird's feathers around its face, and the bird floofs and twists its head appreciatively. It delicately nips at sqq's fingers and sqq let's out a little "Oh! Right!" And procures a little meat snack for it.
Lbh, totally not jealous of a bird, announces himself and sqq smiles at him, very gleeful.
"Shizun...?"
"Binghe, welcome back! You may not have noticed, but your Liu-Shishu had a little qi deviation and turned into a bird!"
The bird makes a trilling noise after it—he—snapped up the snack, and goes back to nibbling at sqq's hand, pulling softly at his sleeve. Lbh makes a face.
"How long is he going to be like that?" Lbh asks, edging into sqq's space, not so subtly planning how best to oust bird-lqg from sqq's arm.
"Mu Qingfang said that he would likely have to clear the resentment that caused the qi deviation, before his energy can rebalance and return to normal."
"And... he can do that?" Lbh looks VERY doubtfully at lqg, who is busy trying to fit his head back into sqq's palm, begging for more scritches.
"Ah, well. Probably?" Sqq says, "He has times where he seems more lucid. Yang Yixuan is, uh, dedicated, but I don't trust Bai Zhan to have the delicacy required to take care of Liu-Shidi while he's this indisposed..."
"They might still try to fight him..." Lbh agrees.
"Exactly! He's still so intimidating!" Sqq says this while cooing, dragging his hand down the bird's chest. Bird-lqg obligingly raises a talon, showing off wicked finger-length curving claws to Sqq's obvious delight.
Lbh starts, in reflex, as sqq holds his hand out and bird-lqg curves his talons around it, but bird-lqg is exceedingly delicate, exerting a control that normal birds wouldn't possess.
"And he can't stay on the beast mountain?" Lbh asks
"Well, they have so many other responsibilities..." sqq says, almost pouting at lbh.
Lbh thinks that is entirely unfair. He is the one who should be crying in this situation, seeing as his husband has, once again, done backflips in order to arrange lqg into their care.
"You just want to study him." Lbh accuses, finally burrowing his way into sqq's shoulder, leaning on it enough that it unbalanced bird-lqg. Lbh keeps an eye out, but as expected, bird-lqg launches off of sqq with a few powerful flaps of his wings instead of risking harming sqq to readjusting his perch.
"I could turn into a better animal for you to study." Lbh says, petulant, into sqq's hair.
"Ahhh, it will only be for awhile you sticky husband." Sqq says, but dutifully pets lbh's hair.
Lbh shuffles them back into the bamboo house, intending on visiting the kitchens then heading to bed, but he's stopped by the mess of straw and woodchips spread along the floor. A large, wickedly gnarled branch leans haphazardly across the home, almost wall to wall.
"Shizun......" lbh says in despair. "Shizun, he is not staying in the house, is he?"
As if in punctuation, a beautiful feather floats down lazily in front of lbh's face.

One thing that really bothers me is when people try to make light of Shen Jiu's abuse of Luo Binghe, especially when they compare it to Liu Qingge beating his disciples. It's frustrating to me because it makes me feel like no one else has read the books, since I've never seen this brought up, but Liu Qingge’s disciples weren't *children*.
In book 2, after Shen Qingqiu emerges in his mushroom body, he runs into Yang Yixuan and describes him as a youth of 17 or 18 then observes, "the color of his robes confirmed that he really was from Bai Zhan Peak, but Shen Qingqiu could summon no memory of ever having seen such a young disciple before." (Page 152).
Now, I'm not saying this doesn't mean there are absolutely no young disciples there, but even still, Bai Zhan Peak is full of warriors. There's a difference between fighting with a disciple and tying a disciple up and beating them without giving them a chance to defend themselves.
This isn't Shen Jiu slander; he's actually my favorite character despite his behavior because I feel as though he has a lot of potential.
I understand that there were a lot of misunderstandings about his actions, such as killing Liu Qingge, but he was NOT a good person.
I don't mind when people write fics and "Jiu-mei"-ify him. I mean, some people want to write softer fics and characters, and honestly, if Luo Bingge--who his character mirrors--can become a softer version, so can he.
I just hate when people act as though it was canon that he wasn't that bad and was just a poor misunderstood boy who wanted love. He actively pushed people away and was a self-fullfilling prophecy. And he did, in fact, want Luo Binghe dead and was mad he was still alive.
If you're going to mischaracterize my favorite character, at least admit you didn't read the extras, or it's an au where he's softer. I do it all the time, any small change in his past could lead to him acting differently. Personality isn't set in stone and is most often dependent on the situation. But don't insist it's canon and take away what little agency Shen Jiu has. He knew exactly what he was doing and would hate his "fans" for implying otherwise.

The idea of characters from other stories winding up in SVSSS has been stuck in my head for a while but I'm not gonna write abt it lmao so here's what's been rattling around in the ole noggin:
Toph:
Toph would be a genuine menace
Specifically on poor Liu Qingge, who hasn't the slightest clue how he wound up with yet another student
Earthbending should not be possible here. Earthbending is NOT possible here.
Toph invents earthbending here.
In fact, she only gets stronger. Because the cultivation aspects of the world means she's got even more qi and knows more about how to use it beyond earthbending.
She can now use qi itself to "see" (sensing others' qi, using it to sense movement, etc.) Not just earthbending
Lqg wants nothing to do with any more disciples. Especially not ones as annoying as yang yixuan
He gets a gremlin even more annoying than yang yixuan
He lies awake at night, regretting saving her life that one time on a hunt and kickstarting her path of being a Problem
Specifically, he saves her life one night while she's out trying to remaster earthbending, inspiring her to become a cultivator
She runs away from her noble family and their arranged marriage and stifling life that they've planned out for her and heads straight to Cang Qiong's Bai Zhan peak the first chance she gets
Refuses to take no for an answer, thus growing to become lqg's #1 menace
He both blesses and curses the day she was born
Lqg would sooner die than admit she's basically his other baby sister/daughter figure
Will outright refuse to fly on her sword When asked how she'll get around, the earth goddamn MOVES UNDER HER FEET and she causes several earthquake/mole monster sightings with these shenanigans
Is banned from this move
Begins to tunnel underground instead
She could arguably fly on her sword just fine, sensing the qi around her to navigate and shit, but it's harder and definitely uncomfortable and brings back bad memories of that one time in the volcano with Aang and Sokka
Luo Binghe wants her dead
She probably never gets strong enough to 1v1 him and win but she's definitely strong enough to become a genuine challenge
Especially when she reinvents metalbending
Rides for her shizun ong
Would probably fight lbh for lqg's honor after the SQQ corpse situation (he did not ask her to do this)
Aang:
The angel of Qing Jing peak fr
Or that monastery but we don't hear enough about them tbh
Has legitimately no idea how he got here, maybe too scared to question it actually
Like, did he really fuck up and end up getting ripped out of the avatar cycle orrrr????
Decides some things are better left unknown
The only struggle he really has is not being bald anymore
Honestly???? Might still shave his head and just stick to a wig
Would inevitably get caught or ALMOST caught and eventually gets used to growing it out (would probably become the inventor of extensions or wig glue though lmao)
Would make the spoiled qing jing disciples better just by being around them tbh
Star student probably, would be a menace in a cute way
One of the few men allowed on Xian Shu (for visits/messages)
Would probably befriend demons ngl
Loves flying on his sword
Prefers his staff though, and eventually figures out how to make/get someone to make one for him
No one knows how he does the air scooter. They are scared.
No one asks about the tattoos either.
Or how he's controlling all these fucking elements.
He doesn't have an avatar state anymore, but that doesn't seem to stop him from being wildly more dangerous than anyone expected
Possibly unlocks permanent cultivation-blocking? Like sealing off your core
Demons don't take note
Until he learns how to do the same for demonic cores
Exorcist Aang
Possibly becomes a rogue/wandering cultivator
Wandering rogue exorcist Aang????
He's either a god descended upon the earth or a heavenly demon in disguise, according to critics
He thinks it's all silly
Until he meditates too hard and communes with a god or something who tells him they may or may not have bargained to snatch his corner of the avatars soul for a reason
Uh oh
Sokka:
Does not know how he managed to get spiritual energy or cultivate
Actively chooses not to think too much about it
The head disciple of An Ding 😭
Absolutely salty about it
Shang Qinghua is endlessly grateful though
Does not know what to make of the long hair thing; probably tries to keep his hair in a half-pony still, as an ode to the water tribe
I've seen some fics where Qiong Ding is headcannoned as the bureaucratic peak; in this case, he might be able to sweet talk his way in if fate and Yue Qingyuan is kind enough
Either way he's grateful he gets to do sword stuff again
Especially now that he can FLY on them?!
He hasn't completely forgotten his skills, so he's got a whole different style no one's seen before and it's Weirdly Good Actually
He finally works his cultivation up enough to get his personal sword
Then he finally gets to summon his and he cries
It's space sword
No one knows what the fuck to make of this weird ass sword but he doesn't care, it's his and he loves it
Known as the best ever manager of An Ding peak
Katara:
Would have one (1) argument with her brother and march up to Xian Shu
Frequent visitor of Qing Jing and Qian Cao
Mu Qingfang mourns every day that she didn't choose the medicine peak
Katara maintains that she's too ready to beat some ass to ever be a full doctor and vow to do no harm
Never quite learns to be comfy with a sword but can still handle her own
During the demon invasion on Cang Qiong (assuming she's there at the time), she bloodbends Hualing right off the mountain
The demons do NOT stick around
The cultivators are too scared to ask her what the fuck that was but they're nicer to her than before
The xian shu peak gains a fearsome reputation of possibly teaching blood magic
No One gets how she does the waterbending stuff. Outsiders assume it's some Xian Shu ancient secret technique. Or she's related to Mobei Jun. Real members know Kataras just Like This.
Keeps the hair loopies. No matter what people say.
Wears a blue necklace similar to her mother's heirloom; a gift from her shizun probably
Genuinely enjoys the sisterhood on Xian Shu. It reminds her of the better days of her home, before the southern raiders came back
Zuko:
Could've chosen from several peaks, but chooses Bai Zhan
Something about the bamboo on Qing Jing reminds him of his uncle though, so he likes to visit. But not for too long. It hurts.
Isn't really bothered by the long hair thing; while cutting hair isn't forbidden in the fire nation, long hair is common practice, especially for nobles
Keeps the standard topknot until Toph calls it ugly
And then he remembers toph cannot see his topknot
Starts doing ponytails anyway
Also a star student of Bai Zhan, especially after he busts out the firebending forms
Yet another nuisance for poor lqg
He and Toph are the only two that can keep up with each other
Known as the Twin Stars of Bai Zhan
Aka the Twin Headaches of Liu Qingge
Has a small red birthmark near his eye, on the side that used to be burned
The fact that there isn't a massive burn is mildly uncomfortable to him at first. Doesn't feel like himself
Again, No One knows how all these kids with weird qi abilities are coming from
They're beginning to suspect they're all part demon
Neither he nor Toph ever defeat the demon heritage allegations
Especially not with the way they fight. And allegedly have a Past that no one else knows about
Would also fight Binghe for his Shizuns honor
Weirdly chill for Bai Zhan actually
Has probably made leaps and bounds from his avatar hunting days already
Most expect him to have gone to a quieter peak, it's baffling
Until he beats the shit outta somebody
And then goes back to being gentle and chill and forgiving
He wonders if uncle Iroh is watching over him here too
He can only hope his uncle is still proud of him, wherever he might be
Lqg isn't his uncle, but he's still a kind presence that Zuko looks up to a little, even if the guy is a little too punchy
Thus takes it upon himself to ride or die for him
One of the few dual wielders around
His curved blades are also a source of curiosity for the others
But he's good with them so no one complains
In a bingliushen situation, Zuko, Toph, and YYX are feral protective gremlins that somehow make things better AND worse for the development of the bingliushen courtship process lmao
I'll probably make more at some point but that's all for now. If someone wants to make a fic of these PLEASE let me know, link me I'm desperate

Luo Binghe being an extremely enthusiastic wingman for Yang Yixuan to help him get Liu Qingge because it's the perfect solution to make Liu Qingge stop disgustingly pine over Shen Qingqiu. Yang Yixuan does not want his help at all and would rather fight him (as expected of a good Bai Zhan peak disciple) but Luo Binghe does not give a shit and is like "start cooking for him, clean his sword, throw yourself in his arms, you're welcome."

ok back to my sy as yang yixuan au bc the brainrot refuses to leave
Luo Binghe's shixiong and shijie do not like him. This is a fact.
Qing Jing Peak and Bai Zhan Peak have long-standing animosity with each other. This is also a fact.
Those two facts are the root cause of why Luo Binghe is desperately running away, ducking and weaving through the bamboo as four Bai Zhan disciples hunt him down during their raid.
He yelps when he trips over a portruding stone, landing harshly on his elbows. He's already scrambling away when one of the disciples grabs his arm, and punches him on the cheek.
Luo Binghe, with all the force he can muster, pushes him away and resumes running. It doesn't take long before he's cornered to a dead end, and he backs away, trying to find an exit.
He does not need to plan his escape any further when a boy– dressed in Bai Zhan blues and blacks, lands down silently in front of the disciples, and proceeds to solidly beat each and every one of them up.
He has them all giving up in just a few minutes.
"Ah, seriously..." this new boy— older than Luo Binghe, stronger and smarter, too— sighs, placing his hands on his hips. "None of you really listen, don't you?"
With one swift, practiced motion, he swings the four rambunctious disciples over his shoulder, looking unamused. "All of you are to present at the Hall of Reflection and copy down the scriptures fifty times, and I will personally oversee your training for the next two months," the boy says, authority dripping off of every inch of his body. "Seriously, you're lucky you haven't injured anyone or else you'll be facing a worse punish–"
The boy's eyes catch Luo Binghe's. Luo Binghe shrinks away, all too aware of the livid bruise on his cheek and the blood from his nose.
There is silence. Then there is a thud, and all the Bai Zhan disciples who came for the raid groan in unison. There are footsteps, and the boy is suddenly kneeling in front of him, his hands inexplicably tender and gentle.
The boy hisses at the sight of the bruise. "I apologize for my shidi and shimei," he says, soft. His hands are marred with callouses, strong and firm and powerful, but they are gentle when they touch Luo Binghe. "They are rowdy and a little feral after being left uncontrolled for too long. May I ask for shixiong's understanding?"
Shixiong? Luo Binghe nods, a little wide-eyed. The boy softens, perceptibly, and begins threading qi to his meridians. "This is to quicken your body's natural healing," he explains. "You should get it looked better, however– I can accompany you to Qian Cao Pe–"
"No!" Luo Binghe blurts out, cringing away. Da-shixiong's friends warned him against going to Qian Cao. He doesn't want to know what they'd do if he does go there.
A pause. "Very well." The boy stops his qi, finding the bruise to be sufficiently healed. He pulls out medicine from his sleeve, just like how his Shizun does. "This is for bruises, and this one for small cuts. All topical– externally applied on skin, not ingested. No, please don't worry, this is the least I can do."
Luo Binghe accepts the medicine under the boy's insistence. He cannot say anything, tongue heavy in his mouth, not to even ask for the boy's name or why he is helping him.
The boy rises to his feet. "Well," he says, hesitantly laying a hand on Luo Binghe's hair. Either he doesn't seem to notice the flinch or he ignores it, but that doesn't matter because the boy is– patting his head. Gently and softly, like he has not the power to defeat all of the disciples here in this clearing on Qing Jing Peak.
"We'll have to get going now," the boy says. "Don't worry, they will be reflecting on their actions and will be sincerely apologizing for them. Take care, shixiong."
With two disciples over his shoulder and two under his arm, the boy flies away on his spiritual sword. Luo Binghe clutches the medicine in his hands tighter, feeling the warmth of the boy's gentle hands lingering on his own, and tries to carve every line of the boy's face into his memory.

Story-idea: Liu Qingge & Yang Yixuan
paranoid fear of accidental grooming
Poor Yang Yixuan doesn't have it easy on Bai Zhan. No one ever did, the peak was rough and unforgiving to its disciples since the beginning, but his shizun is a special case – very hard to make sense of.
It's not that Liǔ Qīnggē is cruel or mean, quite the contrary. While he is strict, brusque, uncommunicative and overpowering in general, he does show care and kindness besides. Yang Yixuan admires and worships him. He wants to make him proud. And he wants to be of service like the best disciples in history rolled into one!
Unfortunately, in many instances, when he tries the latter, his shizun has what can only be described as a freak-out and either angrily makes him run laps around the peak until Yixuan thinks his legs will break off any moment; doesn't let him get closer than five people's arm lengths for the next week or flees from the peak for days immediately goes on really long missions.
Yang Yixuan is very sad about this, but he thinks he understands. His shizun wants to make him strong and keep him on his toes. He doesn't coddle anyone. Liǔ Qīnggē is also a veteran who lived through a lot of emotional pain. Yixuan is young, but not stupid (thinks he). While he may not know what triggers the outbursts yet, he will one day and then he can help his shizun feel better! His hero deserves some comfortable down-time and that's, among other things, what personal disciples are to ensure after all!
Sadly, that innocent endeavor is exactly what causes the freak-outs.
Liǔ Qīnggē saw how the shit with Luò Bīnghé started, how the damned demon-spawn grew attached due to all of Shěn Qīngqiū's coddling and doting and turned him into the obsessed menace he is today. It's fine during Yang Yixuan's childhood. But as soon as the boy hits puberty, Liǔ Qīnggē is terrified that history might repeat itself here. He can't let that happen, for everyone's sake! Sometimes he doesn't catch all the (perceived) hints until they get thrown in his face, kind of, but he sure as hell will squash any potential budding romantic feelings his disciple might have for him once he does!
Yang Yixuan is very innocently trying his best. Such as:
offering to massage his shizun's back and feet after he comes back from missions or had a long day of training. (Meanwhile Liǔ Qīnggē is ready to cough up blood whenever Yixuan in all seriousness asks to touch him intimately.)
Surprises him by presenting him with a ready hot bath with relaxing herbs. (Liǔ Qīnggē is immediately suspicious whether the flowery bathwater is supposed to be romantic, but accepts it, because he recognizes the flowers as medically useful.)
Then Yixuan offers to wash his back. (Suspicion most awfully confirmed! Poor Yixuan narrowly escapes a thrown Cheng Luan.)
He tries to cook for him. (Hell, no! That's what *gag!* Luò Bīnghé did for Shěn Qīngqiū! What's next? A revealed demon-mark?!)
Making presents of any sort is not taken well either. Yixuan still doesn't know why trying to gift his shizun the nice hair oil he found at the market caused such a spark of anger. He knows his shizun uses hair oil, who doesn't, so maybe it was the scent? Just in case, he's not bringing anything that smells of roses anywhere near him again.
Aaah, everything would be so much easier if his shizun told him what brings up bad memories!

Hi! I saw your wuxia terms guide and it is so helpful, thank you!
I was wondering what someone would call someone who is positionally their teacher, but isn’t officially their teacher? For example, how would Liu Qingge’s peak disciples address him? He is peak lord and should “technically” be their teacher, but he refuses to officially be their teacher or teach them. thanks!
I had to think on this one.
In the setting you've used as an example, despite the fact that Liu Qingge doesn't actually engage in teaching as we've seen Shen Yuan or even Shen Jiu do, he's still entitled to the same address as any other person who's taken in disciples — 'Shifu' or 'Shizun.' These titles aren't really 'teacher' despite that being the translation — not in the way that word means to us now. It's more 'expert acknowledged as the one responsible for the addresser's development.' So even though Liu Qingge doesn't have any disciple that he personally trains (before Yang Yixuan), he's still the one held accountable for the disciples of Bai Zhan Peak.
If I had to guess (because I don't remember if there was any example of it in canon), the Bai Zhan disciples would call Liu Qingge 'Shifu;' the address of 'Shizun' is more formal, and doesn't really fit the temperament we've seen of them.
On the other hand, the hallmasters that do athe actually training on Bai Zhan (if there are any) would be called Zhanglao' [sect elder of an older generation] or 'Zhangbei' [sect elder of the same generation] by the Bai Zhan disciples. Maybe even 'Laoshi' — which is what any teacher is called even if they don't teach the one that's calling them so; it's used that same was as we use 'Professor.' It's about the same level of formality as 'Shifu.'
Hope this response has answered your questioned to your satisfaction ^^'

I have a question!
Since Yang Yixuan is Liu Qingge's only personal disciple, and (as per the Airplane extras) Ji Jue (and all other Bai Zhan disciples i suppose) is LQG's shidi and he call's the other peak lords shixiong...
Does Yang Yixuan calls Ji Jue shixiong or shishu?
