Thinking about it now, it was still a wonderful experience.
I made an appointment with my friend to climb Dalei Mountain before National Day.
After work, I drove directly from Shanghai to Taizhou. The night before, I took the lazy route and set up a tent on the top of the mountain. The weather was very bad, with heavy fog and heavy rain. There was basically no visibility. There were only two of us on the mountain. I spent the whole night half asleep and half awake, and it was foggy until the morning, and I couldn't see anything.
The next day, after going down the mountain, I was ready to start walk to the big loop of Heye Bay. When I was about to leave, I met a white G-Class (Mercedes) at the intersection. It was driven by a beautiful girl. I turned around and told my friend that there was a beautiful woman driving a G-Class (my friend and I are both car lovers, so we would take a second look)
At noon, I arrived at Heye Bay, lightly traveled. The weather was changeable. It was sunny and it started to rain heavily. Despite the rain, I insisted on completing the loop. We went in the opposite direction, which I didn't think was difficult. When we were almost at the top of the mountain, we met the Mercedes G-Class again. I thought it was a coincidence and chatted with the guy who came out of the car all the way to the top. They had planned to camp but gave up because they had too many things (Later, I found out that he was a photographer). After reaching the top of the mountain, everything was worth it. The sunset was beautiful. They also brought a puppy with them, and the puppy was shivering. My friend didn’t put on a coat right after coming up, and he got hypothermia in that moment. Something was wrong and he couldn’t speak. He immediately wrapped himself in an emergency blanket. He had planned to walk the entire loop, but he couldn’t finish it. It was getting dark, so I turned around and asked the beautiful girl if she could take us down the mountain. She agreed without hesitation. Thank you so much! Because I was really embarrassed, I helped them carry their equipment down. My friend was much better when we arrived at the parking spot. I originally wanted to send him to the base of the mountain, but then I remembered that our car was parked at Heye Bay.
The pretty girl didn’t hesitate and sent us there. We drove at least 40 kilometers! She is so nice! We chatted when there was a traffic jam on the road later. We accidentally followed each other on Xiaohongshu. I didn’t realize it at that time. I thought she was also a blogger. I was shocked to find out that it was an artist from Siba when I got home
Anyway, I am very grateful to Yuan Yiqi for saving my friend's life!! It is a blessing for the Seine River (SNH48) to have Yuan Yiqi! She is really beautiful and kind! Thank you for meeting me, the gears of fate started turning from the moment we saw each other at the base of the mountain hhh
By the way, Dalei Mountain is very beautiful, I will come back next time. I will definitely come back for the unfinished loop.

Reading Chinese Names: Female Names
One thing I have noticed recently is that many Chinese learners are not well-equipped to read Chinese names. This is because textbooks usually have names like 王朋 and 张天明 that use basic characters learners already know. But real Chinese names often contain characters that are not taught in classes/textbooks.
I compiled a corpus of over 515 characters found in around 1000 female given names. These names came from members of idol groups (like SNH48 and AKB48-SH) and participants on idol survival shows (like Produce 101 China). I did my best to remove duplicate individuals (like the AKB48 members who participated in CZ101) and not include stage names that are not authentic Chinese names (like 欧若拉). A lot of performers go by stage names that sound authentic or have changed their legal name--I included these. I separated the names into individual characters and then counted how many times each character occurred in the corpus as a whole. Note that these data are not necessarily representative of the overall populations of China and Taiwan. However, I think this info is still valuable.
Below I have the top 75 characters, aka those that were found at least 7 times. I’ve included all the counts for those who may be interested.

48 48Group Songs
My Top 12 MVs
#4, Don’t Touch
This was a contender for Stage Song, because honestly I can’t believe SNH48 gets away with performing this. I can’t believe this song came out of SNH48! AKB48 has Lay Down, Juujun na Slave, and Oshibe to Meshibe but I’m gonna go ahead and say that this song is the sexiest 48 group song (at least that I’ve heard) out there. It’s CLASSY about it too, sensual not overtly sexual.
I wish JJY had been in this MV because the one they gave her was TRASH. TRASH I TELL YOU! ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THIS! GIVE ME THIS! GIVE ME THE CREEPY HAUNTED VIBES WITH THE SEXY SONG! THIS WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN A CAT GIRL WAITING FOR HER...WHATEVER!

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2020 - Roundup Post
[[EDIT: The time and energy I had to give to this at the beginning of the year was very much truncated by grad school and student teaching. It’s mid-April at this point, I’m still finishing up the last of my coursework, and it’s time to move on from this. I’m going to fill in a basic outline for the posts I didn’t get around to making and I’ll hopefully be back to my full regular programming for next year’s lists. Feel free to ask me about any of these that you want more detail on.]]
As a heads up, there is a very real chance that not all the posts in this will end up getting fully made this year. I’m in the midst of student teaching, so posts will probably be a little bit slow coming as I make them when they will make me less stressed. There’s a very real chance that at least one post will end up not being made and will just end up outlined below.
Every year, I do a series of Top Fives of things that have caught my interest and held them. What I focus on varies a little bit from year to year. I am also always open to suggestions! So if there’s a Top Five that you want to see that I’m not planning to do, just shoot me an ask, and I’ll see what I can do! (I’ll answer any asks about this that I get and let you know if I’m going to make a list for it, but each list will end up getting it’s own non-ask post for organizational reasons).
This is my look back on what brought me happiness in the past year, and I’m always down for talking about these things! So if you want to chat about something that I end up listing in these, definitely shoot me a message or an ask. This past year was a weird year, and it’s definitely been the sort of year where the more I have to work to find something that I’m looking at for fun, the less likely I am to follow through on it. That’s my sort of general explanation why some of this may seem a little truncated in contrast to my usual lists.
Below the cut, I’m going to give the outline of the categories that you’ll see here, and that will be where I will put links as I have them.
KPOP
Rookies
Girl Groups
Boy Groups
Soloists
Duets and Special Collaborations
CPOP
Girl Groups 1) The9: The9 is the girl group that came out of QCYN2, and overall, I was very happy with them, especially since Liu Yuxin debuted as center, and she was my favorite going into the show. Favorite MV/Song: “Sphynx” Bias(es): Liu Yuxin 2) Bonbon Girls 303: This is the girl group that came out of Chuang 2020, and I have a lot of complicated feelings about them, but they did end up with an amazing vocal line! Also, my favorite person on the show made it to debut line, so I’m happy with that. Favorite MV/Song: “PLLM” Bias(es): Chen Zhuoxuan 3) OACA Girls (Liu Lingzi/Zeng Keni): Are they going to stay a duet? Are they a predebut subunit? Who knows, but I have really enjoyed the work that they’ve done together. They were two of my favorites off QCYN2, so I’m glad to see them continuing to get opportunities through their company and other appearances. Favorite MV/Song: “Nuh Toys” Bias(es): Both of them 4) SNH48 7Senses: I was a little uncertain what I’d think with them missing two members, including one of my favorites, but their release this year that I paid attention to was really good! Favorite MV/Song: “U Know” Bias(es): Dai Meng (Diamond) [also Xu Jiaqi (Kiki) currently in The9] 5) Color: They’re the most promising of the debuted post Chuang2020 groups for me so far, there are some others that I’m really waiting for though. Favorite MV/Song:  “通關蜜語” [“Getting Past Sweet Talk”] Bias(es):  Cui Wenmeixiu (I guess, but I don’t have a super strong feel for each of the members yet, I liked her on Chuang2020 though)
Boy Groups  1) Nex7 (or YH_NEXT): They’re one of the ongoing boy groups that actually acts as a boy group in the Cpop scene right now, and I like a bunch of the members a bunch, and I tend to like their songs. I appreciate them for continuing to be an actual group, even if they do have a lot of solo promotions too. Favorite MV/Song: “My Love” Bias(es): Zhu Zhengting 2) W0LF: This is a collab group including two favorite soloists Qiu Fengze and Weijin (formerly of Special) and a few other people who I’ve been more peripherally aware of with 4-5 members depending on who exactly is involved at a given time. They’ve released several very enjoyable songs, and I’m excited for this direction for Weijin and for me to get to hear Fengze in a group setting! Favorite MV/Song: “Modern Love” (but honestly everything) Bias(es): Weijin, Fengze 3) Unine: This is about the saddest I’ve been to have one of the survival show groups disband. I loved the group that came out of QCYN1 so much, and I’m glad that we got a parting song from them. I’m doing my best to continue to follow my boys after this, especially my top three (which were coincidentally the show’s top three) Favorite MV/Song: “U’re Mine” Bias(es): Li Wenhan (UNIQ), Yao Bonan (formerly Yao Mingming), Li Zhenning 4) Oner: They’ve had spurts of activities this year, including a very silly CNY song, and some darker stuff that was very dramatic, both as a group and solo. I’m really hoping for more of them as three in the coming year. Favorite MV/Song:  “恶浪” [“Struck”] Bias(es): Ling Chao 5) S.K.Y.: While I only passingly followed the competition show that they came out of, I’m pretty happy with the results. I like a lot of them from previous shows and/or their long term groups. I’m hoping to see more good things from this short term group. Favorite MV/Song: “Burn” Bias(es): Li Xikan, Hu Wenxuan, Zuo Ye
Soloists  1) Sunnee: I’ve followed her since her predebut A’n’D days, and through PD101China and Rocket Girls, and it’s been amazing to see her continue to hold her own as a soloist and make good music that showcases her voice. I’m looking forward to seeing what else she has in store for the future, though I hope that there are at least some more collaborations in there because I like her in group settings. Favorite MV/Song: “夏日Party” [“Summer Party”] 2) Angela Hui: Possibly my favorite PD101China discovery. She continues to release amazing music, MVs, and covers, and I’m really glad to follow her Youtube channel. I love her voice so much (and OK, I want her and Sunnee to actually collab on something because the times that they’ve sung together have been wonderful). Favorite MV/Song: “我們都錯” [“We Are Wrong”] (though honestly everything she’s released this year) 3) Hua Chiyo: She was probably one of my favorite discoveries from Chuang2020, and I wish that she’d gotten further in the show than she did. She’s got such a fun personality and a great voice and she’s a solid dancer on top of it. I’m really glad that she’s been releasing music since the show! Favorite MV/Song: “假裝聽得見” [“Blah Blah Blah”] 4) Liu Lexie: I have to thank Chuang2020 for using her song “Manta” because that was my gateway into listening to her music, and she’s so good! I’ve been thrilled to find that she’s got an active Youtube channel and her music is up on Spotify because it makes it easy to listen to her stuff! Favorite MV/Song: “捉迷藏” [“Hide and Seek”] 5) Wang Sulong [Silence Wang]: It was great to see him on QCYN2 this year and that meant that I was paying attention to catch a lot of his music as it released. He’s been an off and on favorite since he started releasing music, and he continues to impress. Favorite MV/Song:“娛樂世代” [“The Entertainment Generation”]
QPOP/Kazakh Music
Single List This Year 1) Dimash: I don’t know what to say about Dimash that a dozen others haven’t already said. His voice is spectacular, and he’s an amazing performer. Favorite MV/Song: “Across Endless Dimensions” 2) Sevenlight: I’m sad that after an excellent early in the year release, they disbanded. I’m hoping that I’ll see stuff in the future from individual members, but they made for such a good group. It’s a pity for them that this year turned out the way it did. Favorite MV/Song: “Beles” 3) DNA: Favorite MV/Song: “Tumandy Qala” 4) EQ: Favorite MV/Song: “Qalsyn Osylai” 5) Dastan Orazbekov:  Favorite MV/Song: “Begimai”
Figure Skating
Ladies  1) Wakaba Higuchi (JPN) 2) Kaori Sakamoto (JPN) 3) Rika Kihara (JPN) 4) Mako Yamashita (JPN) 5) Chen Hongyi (CHN)
Men 1) Shoma Uno (JPN) 2) Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) 3) Yuma Kagiyama (JPN) 4) Jin Boyang (CHN) 5) Sota Yamamoto (JPN)
Pairs and Ice Dance 1) Wang Shiyue / Liu Xinyu (CHN) Ice Dance 2) Peng Cheng / Jin Yang (CHN) Pairs 3) Anastasia Mishina / Aleksandr Galliamov (RUS) Pairs 4) Kaitlin Hawayek / Jean-Luc Baker (USA) Ice Dance 5) Kana Muramoto / Daisuke Takahashi (JPN) Ice Dance

Watch, Tip, Engage and Supreme.
9158, which has a similar pronunciation as Jiu Yue Wo Ba, meaning 'Just date me' in mandarin. This very first online video streaming platform in China was founded and revealed by Fu Zheng Jun in 2005. Fu's idea was to build a Chinese nightclub online, where each 'Xiuchang' (showroom) has its anchorman or anchorwoman. Viewers should pay to enter the room and tip the anchormen and anchorwomen named 'Zhubo'(live streamers). Fu considers this his original idea:' I found that there is actually no offline socialisation in China. Party mode offline socialisation is developed in the US, but there is no other place to go in China except KTV. Rich people stay at home, and poor ones are in Internet cafes.' (Xiang, 2018) "Go sleeping if you are ugly; go streaming if you are good-looking.' This catchy phrase used to be an advertising slogan by Yingke, a famous live streaming platform started in 2015. Though this platform was somewhat younger than 9518, it is evident that part nature of live video streaming is still via attractive cam girls and cam boys for quite a long time. When being criticised for promoting 'vulgar content', Fu explains:'The earliest business model of the Internet is advertising, and later in gaming is "hate", and our one is based on "adore". (Tao, 2022) As this may sound confusing, what Fu means could be the irrational purchasing behaviour of the audience. The target customers of fu's are the ones with low income who can pay for surfing at the internet cafe and tipping in the nightclub. To tip is to purchase the virtual 'gift'; prices of 'gifts' range from a few RMB to thousands. (Figure 1) High-end gifts come with dramatic virtual effects on the screen; after the platform takes shares, the left money would go directly to Zhubo's accounts. In this case, Zuhbo will be reacting in their ways as a way of saying thanks, doing a special dance or some dramatic movement, sending customised themed presents depending on which type of Zhubo and the one who tips the most would be ranked as the supreme top one, indirectly forming a contest, satisfying the vanity of tippers. (Figure 2) This new interactive mode changes the way the audience interacts with content creators. Like a traditional pattern, Zhubo would attract the audience with good content. However, as more gifts are paid and sent, the audience has the right to engage and alter the content of Zhubos immediately. This rapid feedback gives one Zhubo the answer to what kind of content his/her viewers want to see, which is faster than any other media text. With more interactive ways unclocked, the audience would also grow a bond with Zhubo, forming a sense of belonging or romance, depending on the case. Zhubos can transform this part of the audience into a fan group. A girl band called SNH48 is trying to launch their fans' supporting application-Pocket 48, with a live streaming feature integrated within it, similar to the mode mentioned above; more fans pay and eventually, they get the chance to interact with their idols via live streaming. A rare opportunity to meet their idols in a more approachable way. (figure 3 )

Now that Produce 48 is over and you’ve either decided to stan JPN48 or think it’s not your cup of tea, I would like to call your attention to JPN48’s divorced sister group, CHN48 (China 48).
Originally AKB48’s second international sister group, the group started out by releasing Chinese versions of AKB48’s most popular songs. They performed “revivals” of AKB48 stages, changing the songs’ language to Mandarin, but not changing much else. However on June 9, 2016 it was announced that SNH48 had become independent from AKB48, and following this they began exclusively producing original songs and stages (though they had already released two mini albums composed of original songs). As of now CHN48 has 5 active groups, SNH48 in Shanghai, BEJ48 in Beijing, GNZ48 in Guangzhou, SHY48 in Shenyang, and CKG48 in Chungking/Chongqing.
Like JPN48, the CHN48 teams take turns performing in a theater designated for their group. They also have yearly elections where fans can vote for their favorite members, and for their favorite songs. They also have events that are exclusive to their group, like the Fashion Awards.
What does CHN48 have that AKB48 doesn’t? Well, the biggest thing is an official Youtube channel that streams and gives fans access to all their stage performances for free.
And their post-split music is available on iTunes (at least it is the US), as are live-recordings of their last Best 50 Songs concert (which is also available, in full, on Youtube).
Their stage music isn’t available on iTunes yet but don’t worry about it.
Their music videos feature beautiful locations,
youtube
Beautiful locations and costumes
youtube
Drama-worthy plots
youtube
There’s even zombies in some of them!
youtube
They have members who can sing and rap, and some pretty fantastic dancers.
They also did the Karma’s a Bitch challenge.
And just...just watch this
youtube
There are cons, since it’s a group based on popularity a lot of girls with great talent can get overlooked because they simply don’t have a lot of fans. It’s also hard to buy physical merch from the group, as they don’t partner with any websites that offer world-wide shipping. It’s also not easy to find English-subtitled material, though some people work very hard to provide it and more sites are working on it.
Do you like drama? Oh boy does CHN48 have it! I can’t read most of it, but there’s a legendary feud between a couple of members that everyone knows about, and the girls don’t pretend to get along in public (which is more than I can say for some groups).  Did I mention the girls in question are the Top 2 ranked members? HOOOOOOOO BOY. But most of the members are good friends and very cute together.

SNH48 Senbatsu predictions
It’s that time of year and I feel like sharing my predictions for the Top 16!
TLDR;
Top 3 either remain the same, or FXD gets knocked down and Lu Ting ranks 3
If top 3 remain the same, Kiki or Lu Ting takes 4th place
Yue will either remain 6th or drop, but remain in top 16
SSS, Dai Meng will rank within top 8
KXY drops to under girls
Mo Han is a wildcard, I’m always surprised by her final rank. Either way, she’ll remain in the top 16 and probably top 10
Old Top 16:
1.      Li YiTong (SNH48 - Team HII) 2.      Huang TingTing (SNH48 - Team NII) 3.      Feng XinDuo (SNH48 - Team NII) 4.      Lu Ting (SNH48 - Team NII) 5.      Mo Han (SNH48 - Team SII) 6.      Zhao Yue (SNH48 - Team NII) 7.      Xu JiaQi (SNH48 - Team SII) 8.      Dai Meng (SNH48 - Team SII) 9.      Qian BeiTing (SNH48 - Team SII) 10.   Lin SiYi (SNH48 - Team HII) 11.   Xie LeiLei (GNZ48 - Team G) 12.   Wu ZheHan (SNH48 - Team SII) 13.   Kong XiaoYin (SNH48 - Team SII) 14.   Su ShanShan (BEJ48 - Team E) 15.   Duan YiXuan (BEJ48 - Team B) 16.   Zhang YuGe (SNH48 - Team SII)
 My Predictions:
1.      Li YiTong (SNH48 - Team HII) 2.      Huang TingTing (SNH48 - Team NII) 3.      Feng XinDuo (SNH48 - Team NII) 4.      Lu Ting (SNH48 - Team NII) or Xu JiaQi (SNH48 - Team SII) 5.      Xu JiaQi (SNH48 - Team SII) or Lu Ting (SNH48 - Team NII) 6.      Zhao Yue (SNH48 - Team NII) 7.      Su ShanShan (BEJ48 - Team E) or Dai Meng (SNH48 - Team SII) 8.      Dai Meng (SNH48 - Team SII) or Su ShanShan (BEJ48 - Team E) 9.      Qian BeiTing (SNH48 - Team SII) 10.   Mo Han (SNH48 - Team SII) 11.   Xie LeiLei (GNZ48 - Team G) 12.   Lin SiYi (SNH48 - Team HII) 13.   Wu ZheHan (SNH48 - Team SII) 14.   Zheng DanNi (GNZ48 - Team NIII) 15.   Xu ZiXuan (SNH48 - Team SII) 16.   Song XinRan (SNH48 - Team X)
So not much different from last year, a few places swapped and 3 girls joining – DanNi, XinRan, and ZiXuan. Why did I pick them, and not Sun Rui who was undergirls center last year? All 3 girls had significant placement jumps last year (27, 33, and 20 respectively) and have gotten more attention in the last year. Originally I put Zhang DanSen in the lineup but with her recent demotion I no longer see it happening.
I feel like the girls I dropped from the lineup—XiaoYin, YiXuan, and YuGe—won’t drop far in rank, but I think their fans will find it hard to compete with fans who enabled their faves to make high jumps last year.
As for the other 13 girls who I predict will remain in the top, from what I see they have pretty solid fanbases and for the most part the only reason their ranks changed was because JingYi graduated and they went up one place.
Ah, but now for my controversial opinions!
I think Su ShanShan can go much higher. She didn’t rank officially in the first election she participated in, but she made the BEJ48 Top 7. Then she ranked 21, then 14. I certainly think jumping another 7 spaces is feasible, but she got a lot of attention at the last top 50 concert, was center of 春夏秋冬, and had a solo debut. I think she could go as high as fifth or fourth place, but as far as entering the top 3 goes, I think not unless someone graduates first.
But someone else has been getting a lot of attention lately—Xu JiaQi. I think she could also go up further, maybe rank higher than Zhao Yue. We will have to see.
And then, there’s Lu Ting. Last year, she amassed 145,963.66 points, and Feng XinDuo got 174,020.18. That may seem like a large gap, but considering that Huang TingTing got second place by a margin of over 100,000, it’s close enough that I wonder…could we have a top 3 shakeup?
Well, I think it’s a very slim chance, maybe 30%. Still a bigger chance, I feel, than HTT overtaking LYT. That I give a 1% chance.
However I do predict that this year, LYT will get over 500,000 votes.
And I have decided to do my own senbatsu. Soon I’ll be posting who I would want in my Top 16, in the order I want them.

Note
hey!!! i'm starting to get into c-pop a little and was wondering if you might have any recommendations :)
Indeed I do!! these might not all be considered c-pop in the same way you would consider something k-pop (if you catch my drift) but they are all in Mandarin Chinese!
Here are some soloists/groups I like (+ my favorite songs of theirs!):
Kimberly Chen (Super famous for her song 愛你 (Love You))
老王樂隊 (Your Woman Sleep With Others) - I recommend 我還年輕 (Teens Edge) *Technically Folk-Rock but they're great!*
Jolin Tsai (recognized as one of Asia's top-selling female recording artists of the 21st century!! She's amazing and all her songs are fantastic!)
ONER
Nine Percent (formed by a produce-like program so I also recommend listening to songs from the show!)
陳粒 (Chen Li - listen to 中文 Xiao Ban!!)
Rocket Girls 101 (火箭少女101) (Second season of the show that created Nine Percent! Their members include Xuanyi and Meiqi from WJSN!) My favorite song of theirs is 卡路里 Calorie!!
胡66 (Hu66)
TF BOYs
Jess Lee
LAY (Obviously)
WayV (again, obviously)
CKG48 / SNH48 / BEJ48
MY ABSOLUTE ALL TIME FAVORITES: SING (my favorite c-pop song of all time is their song 寄明月!! The dance for it is so pretty and cool and god I cannot get enough of them 😩)
I hope this helps a bit? I might've gotten a little carried away but I’m glad to help in your c-pop endeavors! I love giving recommendations for Asian pop music/Asian music in general!)
