Information:

As its current form, Olcott speculates that the constellation has originated with the Phoenicians. It was not mentioned by the Greeks "until about 600 BC." At that point the Greeks began to use it for navigation instead of Ursa Major, inspired by the Phoenicians. Because of this, the group has been designated as "Phoinike" (Olcott 371).

Olcott further speculates that the Greeks called Ursa Minor "Cynosura" or "the dog's tail" (Olcott 371).

Evidently the Phoenicians called the constellation "Doube" meaning the "speaking constellation," which also could mean in that language a "bear," which linked the two ideas (Olcott 371-372).

Babylonia saw this constellation as a leopard while it was known as a dog in Egypt. It was also associated with jackals. It's additionally been seen as a chariot and of course bears. (Olcott 372).

Ursa Minor is identified with the son Arcas of Callisto, who was put into the sky right as he was about to slay his mother (who was in the form of a bear) (Olcott 372).

Ursa Minor and Ursa Major were thought to be the bears that protected and nursed Jupiter. For this, the two bears were turned into nymphs and placed into the sky (Allen 448).

The constellations of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor were commonly referred to as "dancing" by many different cultures due to its circle of the north pole (Allen 449).

Other animals associated with Ursa Minor include dogs, Calves (cows), Goats, Fish, Leopards, Fruit, and Jackals. Most creative was it being a "Hole in which the earth's axle found its bearing" (Allen 449-450). The Egyptians "saw a hippopotamus or a crocodile in the Ursa Minor stars" (Staal 139-140).

Some cultures saw it as a mountain upon which the heavens rested and the gods assembled (Allen 451).

Since the stars of Ursa Minor never set, some ancient Egyptians considered the stars to be evil (Staal 140).

The fixed nature of Polaris, the north pole star, made this Constellation incredibly important for navigation (Olcott 373).

One name for the constellation was "The Twister" (Allen 453), which is kind of amusing.

Inside the constellation is a neutron star, named "Calvera" (Wikipedia). It is "one of the hottest and closest of its kind to Earth."

Ancient peoples saw this constellation (and Polaris) as "an anchor that held the world in place... That top of the sky symbolized stability, order, and transcendental celestial power" (Krupp 275).

Ursa Minor/Polaris are seen as both keeping the world in order and a source of the world's order (Krupp 283).

Alpha Ursae Minoris Name: Polaris Color: Yellow Apparent Magnitude: 1.98 - name derives from "Stella Polaris" or more simply "Pole Star" (Allen 453). - Also known as "Phoenice" due to its importance and usage by the Phoenicians. - Other names include "Cynosure," the Finnish "Taehti," from Damascus "Mismar," and the Turkish "Yilduz" (Allen and Olcott). - Was called "the Judge of Heaven" and "the High one of the Enclosure of Light" (a title shared by Alpha Draconis/Thuban, which was once the Pole star itself) (Olcott 374). - Was known as "the Great Imperial Ruler of Heaven" and "the Emperor of Emperors" in China (Olcott 374). - Also called "the Lodestar" (Allen 455). - Also referred to as a needle or nail (Allen 455). - "Polaris is the brightest Cepheid variable star visible from Earth" (Wikipedia). - Wasn't given its latin name (Polaris) until the Renaissance. Beta Ursae Minoris Name: Kochab Color: Orange Apparent Magnitude: 2.08 - One of the two "Guardians of the Pole," a title shared with Pherkad. - Arabs referred to it as "The Bright One," and "the Lights of the Two Calves" (Olcott 376). - The two Guardian stars were used as a timepiece (Olcott 376). - Was the pole star at various other times (Allen 454).

Gamma Ursae Minoris Name: Pherkad Color: White Apparent Magnitude: 3.05 - One of the two "Guardians of the Pole," a title shared with Kochab. - Referred to as the dimmer calf (to Kochab) (Olcott 376). - Also called a "Dancer of the Pole" (Allen 459).

Delta Ursae Minoris Name: Yildun Color: White Apparent Magnitude: 4.36 - Closest star to Polaris. - Name probably derived from the Turkish "Yilduz" that was previously used for Polaris. Has been called "Vildiur" at times (Allen (460).

It tasted heavenly—Even better with the thought that the prideful heir of Baekdu went through the trouble of getting it for you. The thought was sweeter than sugar. Mid-chew however you realized that its... quite... odd...? Why would the prideful heir of Baekdu go through the trouble of getting waffles for you this late night?

"Yeah that could be it..." You concluded once you figured that he might be trying to be a bit nicer and decided to start with you first—taking another bite of the waffle.

Subin: First the waffles, next the sandwich, and now THIS?!

Jisuk: You still believing that he's just trying to be nice?

They sighed, Sucheon is still Sucheon when it comes to the rest—especially the two of them. You're a different case however.

He has to admit it was a teeny bit disconcerting when Jiyoung told her that Kang Suman wishes to have him and his friends over for dinner. Well, considering everything that has happened lately, maybe it's best that the awakeners of their country develop a more amiable relationship with one another. Other than that, he couldn't really think of any reason why Baekdu wants to share a meal with them.

A reason that would not (now or eventually) require combat at least.

Kayden, Pluton and Curtin were completely hyped bouncing conspiracy theories all night he actually had to ask them to leave his room. Sleep aside, they're making it sound like Jiyoung is sending everyone like lamb to the slaughter. He knows they're simply worried and, yeah.. intrigued. He is too. Probably why he said yes even after Jiyoung told him the reason for the invitation is, "Sucheon has never had friends over. Ever."

Kayden laughed so loud at that when he told them. "He'd have to have friends for that first."

Well, dinner was uneventful. Soobin and Jisuk joking that the food might be poisoned in front of their hosts might have given him indigestion though. Those two are just built different he swears.

Or maybe the indigestion is from something else. You see, it's just one bewildering thing after another.

Maybe it's from how Suman has shown them Sucheon's baby pictures. You heard right. Baby pictures. Why his uncle would torment him so is beyond him. By the time they were done looking through Sucheon's entire evolution, Sucheon's face was purple. It's kind of cute though. His uncle has 15 hardbound albums full of baby Sucheon. Every picture was captioned, by the way. No less two paragraphs each.

Or maybe the fact that the Kang household has a whole noraebang built solely for this very occasion.

Or that Suman made Sucheon sing for them. Jisuk and Soobin were very enthusiastic cheering for him during his performance but he has a feeling it only made the experience much more traumatic for Sucheon.

Or maybe it's the matching pajamas. He almost laughed at that point but Jisuk had to ask whether their next activity is coloring books or puzzles.

Suman looked half flustered and half determined to please then, "W-Would you like to do that?"

Jisuk just stared at him like he grew a second head.

"Normally we just watch movies and eat junk food, sir." Thank heavens for Wooin.

So they were herded to the theater room and seated for a movie. While they were waiting for their popcorn, Soobin finally asked what none of them dared to, "Hey, Kang Sucheon. What's up with your uncle setting us up on a playdate?"

Sucheon who, after his riveting rendition of Magnetic, seems to have his jaw glued shut suddenly sprung to his feet. "This is not a playdate!"

Soobin leans back on her seat. "Dude, I'd rather this a playdate than us babysitting you. Like what the fuck. No offense, your uncle seems to have put his all preparing everything but Pororo pajamas, seriously? No shade to the guy, he's cute and all but why. Is he your favorite cartoon or something?"

"This is not a playdate!" Sucheon repeated, shoulders shaking.

Soobin made a face, "I heard you the first time.."

"Right, it's called hanging out."

They all turned to Wooin.

"Next time let's just do it at Jiwoo's. I feel bad leaving the cats by themselves.."

Backstory

- Was born to a family of regular humans with dormant awakened genes. Her parents found her fire ability to be a nuisance and danger to others, so they "gave" her to an organization that will "help" in fixing their troubled child. Sure the organization's facilities are far away and there will be no contact for the safety of both child and parents, but it's all for the child's well being. Correct? (Honestly, they just didn't want to deal with her and the organization was paying a hefty amount that would pay their debts.) ... Nari never came back home.

Years later...

After Baekdu affiliates investigated a facility, in their area, that was caught practicing human trafficking and experimentation amongst awakened ones. All human subjects were released and brought back home. Well all, but one. A young girl was unable to be brought back home due to no familia connection or any information that could tell where her origins were from. All that was known of the girl was that her name was Nari, she was eleven years of age, and that her abilities were of pyrokinesis and restoration. So not wanting to leave a young awakened one that was found in their territory unattended, Baekdu sponsored the young girl. Paying for living expenses, education, and other needs until she grows to the age of twenty.

Her mentor

- Camila Ibarra, known as the healing witch, found Nari when she was 13 years old. The old woman saw good potential in the girl that was being wasted on. Aside from helping Nari with her abilities, Ibarra has been pushing the girl to act more selfishly. After all, being a healer in the world of the awakened is laborious and often unappreciated. So why not be a little selfish for your own good?

What's that thing on her neck?

- A barcode. A constant reminder of her past that she hides under make up, chockers, and collared shirts.

Okay, uh. Remember this post?

I decided why not expand on it. I was reading through articles on fox behaviors, and I got to wondering: what if we were to see subtle fox features that went unnoticed by an average human? Let alone these traits and characteristics that shift slightly because they’re in fact, creatures of myth now!

The idea wouldn’t quite leave me alone, so here we are - in my absolute brainrot and with my thoughts. So.

⚠️ CW: Potential Psychosis? Dereality?

Imagine for a second, you just see the flash of sharp canines and then it’s gone the next; you see an odd gleam in their eyes but that could’ve just been a trick of the light. Did you really see it? Was it just your imagination? You see hair that doesn’t quite look human (this one’s canon, sort of- if you remember Nam Jiah and the fox hair that was Lee Yeon’s), but that’s impossible.

We’re also talking these are nine-tailed foxes.

According to what I’ve found, foxes tend to be active the most during dawn and dusk (crepuscular, for a neat little word!) and I can’t help imagine this being reflected in our fox brothers, Yeon and Rang. Although Yeon was the lord of Baekdu Mountain so he probably had to be up at all hours; however, we also see him discreetly watching over a young Nam Jiah.

Though then we have Rang! I like to think because he was a young, borderline naive kit - he was active when the sun was beginning to set, and well, much like a young fox cub - would attempt to engage in play. He was certainly different when he’d been younger, and my goodness I’m definitely eating this stuff up but here’s another thing: could you imagine that, to those with keener sight, can see something strange to nine-tailed foxes during darker hours? I can’t quite explain it in my head right now, but seeing barely visible wisps of the tail forming, eyes that shine under the moonlight.

Communication

Foxes are vocal canids. I can’t help but imagine Rang, at least, having his own unique of ‘talking’ in a way that probably wouldn’t be understood by normal humans. Low sort of squeak-yips, his laughter sounding vaguely foxlike but it’s only discernible to either other foxes, supernatural creatures, or the rare few ‘gifted’ humans.

Foxes use certain types of vocalization for interaction and contact. This’ll make more sense after reading one of my incoming fics, but imagine Rang and Yeon having their own contact calls in the chance something went south.

Now for normal foxes, this involves barking and shrieks but I’ll figure out a way to make this a little more creative…

Foxes can also purr! Though we’ll get to this later.

Additional Thoughts

I just have very normal neurodiverse thoughts about these series and the fact they are foxes. I also keep thinking of Rang, my poor, wet fox, and well, I think he learned to rely on certain instincts in order to get by. Including fox fire! I like to think he can wield this, although I’ve yet to see him use it in canon but I’ll cut this short.
