Design commentary for these cards, if you want to hear me expound upon nerd shit. (Hopefully in a manner that is friendly to people who don't know anything about magic.):

First of all I'm not even trying for balance. There is a delicate art to card costs (the number in the top right) and how much "value" abilities and stats give you for what you spend to play the card.

This isn't a real set, and I don't really care about that. We are all vibes no substance here at bloodgulchblog badmagic industries.

CORTANA

This all started because I was making jokes about what if Cortana was a Planeswalker??? so here she is.

Cortana is in Blue because in MtG, Blue is the color that does the most with artifacts. Artifacts are cards that represent physical objects, like machinery or equipment or buildings.

Blue is also a color concerned with logic, thought, information, memory, time, and free will (or the loss thereof).

The number in the bottom right is a Planeswalker's Loyalty. The idea is that if you play a Planeswalker, they have temporarily showed up to help you out in this fight and will stay until their Loyalty runs out. The printed number is what they start at, and they lose Loyalty when they take damage or use a - ability.

Once per turn, you can use one of a Planeswalker's abilities. Abilities have a + or - number (or zero) increase or decrease their loyalty by that number when you use them.

Usually, the Planeswalker's last ability is expensive and requires keeping them alive on the board for at least a couple turns to set off, and you'll usually run them out of loyalty to trigger it. MtG players might call this their "ult" or "blowing up" the Planeswalker.

+1 Ability: Cortana creates a small creature on the board that can tap artifacts (or creatures using artifacts.) Many magic cards have abilities that you need to "tap" them in order to use, which means turning them sideways, and you can only do that once per turn (basically.) You also have to have a card untapped in order to attack or block an attack with it. The flavor here is that Cortana is splitting off a tiny AI fragment/copy that is meddling with your opponent's hardware, taking away some of their options and slowing them down. (But only if they're running artifacts. More on that in a minute-)

+0 Ability: Drawing a card is pretty plain, but it's an extremely useful effect. Blue cards do a lot of drawing, and it's usually flavored as stealing information.

-8 Ability: The "library" is your deck. You can pull 3 artifacts out of your deck and slap them down on the table, no delay, no having to pay for them. Cortana's ult lets you put the three biggest, nastiest toys you can find on the board. My imagination for this set is that Halo would be very heavy on artifacts, artifacts matter a lot in this set, so in theory this would give you lots of wonderful, horrible options.

THE MASTER CHIEF

Chief's in Blue and Red here because this card cares about artifacts (blue), and is making a sacrifice to directly destroy something (something red does). You could also argue for Black, as Black also likes sacrificing things to kill stuff, but Red is much more about artifacts than Black and Red is also just a much more Spartan-y color. (We'll talk about Black later.)

Red is usually the color where you find direct damage spells, anything with fire or explosions, breaking your opponent's machinery, and fast and relatively aggressive creature cards.

(He's also in Blue because I'd want to enable a deck where Chief and Cortana can be run together.)

"Crosshair counters" are a mechanic I'm inventing, it will probably be bad but the idea is that they represent taking aim at your enemy's things. I'm imagining a bunch of cards interacting with those by placing them, removing them, and doing things to cards that have crosshairs on them.

"Permanents" are cards like lands, creatures, artifacts, planeswalkers, and enchantments that stay permanently on the board until destroyed. Lands are cards that mostly exist so you can tap them to get mana and pay for your spells. Destroying Lands is a pretty rare effect in Magic, it used to be more common but R&D figured out it's pretty unfun to play Magic when your opponent is... making you unable to play Magic, so most of the time destruction effects will specify nonland permanents these days. This card follows suit. But other than that, he can kill pretty much anything.

The flavor here is that you will want to use effects to get Chief through your opponent's blocking creatures, then scrapping some of your artifacts to take out your enemy's biggest threats. It's very much the blowing-up-the-Pillar-of-Autumn's-engines-to-take-out-the-Halo vibe.

....Or, if you've got the Cortana card out and are using artifact creatures she made, taking out the Unyielding Hierophant while a Cortana fragment fork bombs its systems.

........Or having to leave Cortana behind to accomplish the mission.

THE GRAVEMIND

Black and Green are a classic reanimator combination, and I figure the Flood is going to be cornering the market on Black and Green cards here.

Black is the power-at-any-price color that can do a bit of everything, if you're willing to pay for it. (Usually by sacrificing creatures or doing damage to yourself.) Black's flavor is usually necromancy, zombies/ghouls/demons, messing around with dead cards in your graveyard, draining power from creatures, and skipping dealing damage and just killing creatures directly.

Green is the wild/nature color that likes big creatures, getting you more land cards so you can play more expensive creatures/spells earlier in the game, strengthening your creatures, and destroying artifacts. It also does some graveyard restoration. Its flavor is all about rampant growth and unchecked wildness.

This is an expensive but very, very powerful creature. The Gravemind is a big, tough card with high stats that has abilities of (theoretically) everything that has died this game. If he hits the board and your opponent doesn't do anything about him immediately, you are going to be able to start doing a lot of silly shit with not just your graveyard, but any creatures they have in theirs. This is a game ender if it's not answered fast.

(And you can tap him to mill. Mill just means take 5 cards from the top of your deck and put them in your graveyard. I think this is actually too many and I should've thought harder about this, but sshhhhhhhh.)

I figure the Flood cards in this set would have plenty of reanimating zombies effects, but the Gravemind feels better as a card that is just using everything that's dead as a resource.

It knows everything you knew, once it consumes you.

PURGE THE HERESY

No creativity at all here, this is basically just Wrath of God (an existing magic card) with glassed world flavor.

A card like this is called a "board wipe" by magic players because it wipes out everything in play.

White is the color for orthodoxy, authority, focus on the many over the few, light, vitality, and stricture.

We'll see a lot of Covenant cards in white, but also some UNSC.

SCORPION TANK

I think the numbers on this are fucked and I might fix them later when I have more thinking energy.

Anyway, this is a vehicle. Vehicles have power and toughness (the numbers in the bottom right, basically their damage output and how much damage they can take.)

However, you can't attack with a vehicle unless you tap some creatures to "crew" it.

This is a pretty tough vehicle, and Trample is a very tank-y ability.

Normally when you send your creatures to attack, if an opponent's creature blocks yours it prevents any damage from getting to your opponent.

A creature with Trample, however, will still do damage to your opponent if there's any left over after being blocked.

If you block the tank with a creature with a toughness of 1, there will be 4 damage leftover that your opponent will still have to take to their health. Oof.

It's a slow, trundly card that hits heavy once it gets going. (And heavier if you power it up somehow.)

Okay, I have other ideas for cards, but I think my insanity is cured for the day.

The Secret Series Non-Spoiler Review:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 As you may already know from my reel, bookshelf post, or comments I make a lot on other posts, I absolutely love this series. Not only do I have a soft spot for it because it’s some of the books that got me into reading, but I reread it last year and they are objectively, fricking fantastic. My favorite thing about this series has and always will be the narrator/author (see second picture for example). Just like the sass and the jokes and the occasion defining of words in the footnotes: I cannot get enough. Like there’s another whole plot there (that - mini spoiler - ends up being tied into the main story). The characters are also amazing. Cass the young survivalist who plans for everything and Max-Earnest the puzzle-solver who is terrible at jokes but somehow still funny. The plot is so good in each book I can’t choose a favorite or least favorite of the bunch (unlike every other series I’ve read that usually at least has one book that is worst than the others). These books are like the definition of “it’s about the journey not the destination” as from book 1 we are searching for a secret we’re not sure if we will ever find, and yet it is never slow. You get to watch the characters grow and change, becoming more confident in who they are. And it doesn’t even end when the book is over because my other favorite thing about these books, especially when I was young, is the appendices (learned that word from book 4). I had so much fun testing to see if I was a super-taster, making disguises for the book (mine from a kid in pic 3), and learning the magic tricks. These books also have some really great full page art for each chapter. Not only did I immensely enjoy these books (this review might honestly just be a test to see how many positive words I can use to describe these books), but as a kid I learned a lot from them. I will never stop recommending these books to people no matter how old you are because I think they are something every mystery/adventure book-lover should experience.
