Long rainy days of the typhoon season means it’s also time for our local SOUPer heroes. Here are 6 soup suggestions to help fight colds, wet commutes, or to help melt the clouds away in our own minds.

Bisaya halang-halang brings spice, lemongrass, and coconut milk to our lives. Batsoy from Iloilo and Kinalas from Bicol brings us rich, meaty, noodle soups. Tiyula itum from Tausug and Muslim cooks brings us unique flavors from Southern Mindanao, while Luzon’s Tinola and Sinigang make a vegetable-rich soup duo, full of varying shades of green and spice. The names of these soups are illustrated with their names either in Badlit from the Visayas, Basahan from Bicol, or Tagalog Baybayin.

Wherever you are never forget: rain or shine, its sabaw time.

How many hornbill species are in the Philippines? There are 10*!

They are named after their horn-shaped bills, typically with a casque on top.

7 of the 10 PH hornbills are threatened*, and two of them are among the most endangered hornbills in the world. One of them is the Dulungan :(

Philippine scripts featured here are Tagbanwa, Hanunoo, Badlit, and Baybayin. Local names are from JC Gonzalez's "Enumerating the Ethno-ornithological importance of Philippine hornbills", published in 2011.

Which hornbills live on your island, and what is being done to protect them, their habitat, and the natural resources you share with them?

The province of Antique in Panay declared August as Dulungan Month since 2020. Support organizations such as PhilinCon and the Haribon Foundation to help conserve Dulungan and the forests we share with them. Dulungan is known internationally as the Rufous-headed Hornbill (𝘙𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘥𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪).

JUST A THOUGHT OMG do you think reader would teach her and k’uk’ulkan’s kid (if ever they have one) baybayin? 😭🥹🥹🥹 kasi di’ ba when the Spaniards arrived, they destroyed whatever native writings they could lay their hands in to. So in a way, our pre colonial history would be passed on and not just the culture reader was already born in 🥹

As reader is implied to be from a Cebuano background, I feel like she'll know Baybayin and Suwat Badlit! And apart from teaching the godling baby Yucatec Maya, they'll also learn how to speak in Bisaya and Tagalog🥺 We have such a smart baby in our hands and I already love them so much!

Halikha: Two Arts Together as One

While most spend their February 14 buying flowers and chocolates, getting ready for a night out, or preparing a nice home-cooked dinner for two, this young power couple had something a bit different in mind. For Valentine’s Day, cultural advocates Venazir Martinez and Taipan Lucero, both connected by their love for Philippine culture, launched their exhibit entitled “Halikha” at The Podium Boutique Hotel.

Individually, Venazir’s and Tapian’s interpretations on the visual representations of Philippine culture are very different. Venazir coins the term “Hila-bana” for her works, in which her illustrations place focus on the people and textiles of ethnolinguistic groups. On the other hand, Taipan is known for his “CalligraFilipino,” which combines ancestral scripts such as Baybayin, Badlit, and Hanunoo with calligraphy. Together, their works are a match made in heaven.

In continuing the theme of Valentine’s Day, “Halikha” features portraits of local couples who keep the cultural spirit alive through different arts. In terms of their creative process, Venazir explains that the pieces start with her doing the illustrations, and Taipan adds in the words that he sees fit. While the ability to read Baybayin is still very uncommon, a glimpse of what’s written can be seen through the titles of the pieces. It’s a juxtaposition of freedom and control. While Venazir’s drawings are organic and outspoken, Taipan’s calligraphy brings restraint through clean strokes positioned geometrically.

Venazir and Taipan are making waves and doing important work in keeping nationalism awake through art. Through their efforts, we are reminded of how truly beautiful our traditional culture is and how it is a privilege to own that identity. As young people, we have the duty to do the same, even in our own little ways.

Check out “Halikha”, which will be on display at the Podium Boutique Hotel until March 14, 2020.

Have you watched Nimona? Whenever she used her wings I couldn’t help but be reminded of Tik-tik from the story “Si Kalipay” by Christina Newhard and Happy Garaje. Tik-tik is Cebuano for a spirit or creature similar to the Tagalog Manananggal, which flies without legs! Hashtag Nimona-nananggal! Here she is in pre-colonial Visayan attire, inspired by a class I attended held by Karakoa Productions based in Cebu. She’s decked out in gold, with kasikas or arm bands, a kamagi chain worn as a sash, a lambong top, a bakus or belt Batman would be jealous of, and a heavy taklay or gold necklace.  I loved how she transformed into different animals in the film, so I imagined her here shapeshifting into different Philippine wildlife, and used different Philippine scripts to write their names. Lots of things going on here, which is how I saw Nimona. Badlit Calligraphic Series

Badlit Calligraphic Series (2022) by Ryangilo O. Llauderes, Digital Art

Badlit, or Suwat Bisaya, is an ancient Visayan writing system similar to Baybayin. Superseded by the Latin alphabet following Spanish colonization, Badlit has seen some revival among the Visayan people in the present times in the pursuit of reconnecting with our rich precolonial roots and cultural identity. 

This series of artworks symbolically depicts today’s renaissance of the Visayan script through a contemporary calligraphic style inspired by traditional East Asian calligraphy. Uniquely Bisaya words such as bahandi (meaning treasure/wealth in the Visayan languages), handuraw (to imagine/reminisce) and ginikanan (parents/ancestors) are transcribed in Badlit and then given life in this digital calligraphic series as a way to celebrate not just our native Visayan culture, but also our nation’s diverse heritage as a whole.

Did some script work for @jplaxamana's upcoming film: PENDUKO 2020 This new film version will explore precolonial Visayan culture as described in various books. In this re-imagining of the beloved comic book character created by National Artist Francisco V. Coching, Penduko is a “kalagan nga tao.” Historian William Henry Scott defines the term as a spirited, forceful man.
