Ok so— hair is sort of essential even if the first film largely has everyone in helmets (apart from select programs and during the love scene). I think it’s especially important when portraying Tron in the legacy era as well as no one seems quite able to get his hair right… it should look like Alan’s, if not a little bit scruffier compared to his “straight and narrow” style.

The most important aspect to this is the bangs. I swear to god no additional Tron media ever gets his bangs right or gives Tron a military/police officer cut which is a whole other level of don’t- but it’s. You don’t realize it but by having the bangs, making his hair a bit fluffier it gives- young , idealistic and confident. The excited and fiercely loyal program we see in the film— he’s Alan’s best traits personified as well as being his own person simultaneously (there is mirroring but it stops at a certain extent it’s complicated)

I’m not saying he doesn’t “age” (not physically anyway) or go through things that would change his personality and demeanor but his core traits remain. The fluff should remain, he’s sort of stuck as a young romanticized Alan? I sound insane but there’s a point to this, his hair gives away the softer features— oh sure he’s deadly efficient but he’s also a complete goof!! (Any moment with Yori or Ram shows you he’s all smiles and loves to quip). Future installments ignore this-

Cut the bangs and sort of cut out a massive part of his character only leaving the deadly efficiency and stoicism. Ok being “Mr.Moral” is all well and good but you forgot the heart of gold and soft side part—

This goes through with the “Badger hair” too, or uh- what Bruce calls it.

Besides being a “zany” thing to highlight the inhuman nature of programs (one of the easiest way is always wacky hairstyles) it’s also literally tied to this sort of pure love ™️ aspect to their relationship. It’s tied to his goofier and softer side who 🧍‍♂️”it looks terrible” etc etc

The additional implication of this being apart of a “true form” (he has more free flowing light lines added with tape that aren’t featured here) also sort of hints at a — depriving the lighter and sweeter side of him because this is a boys action franchise now rahhhhhh

A sketchy sketch of Sora and Tron. This idea has been kicking around in my head for a while now, so at least it's out now. I loved playing the Space Paranoids level in Kingdom Hearts II back in the day.

Trying to develop a rough and quick sketchy style so I can explore some ideas without spending too much time on them. Still needs work. Got carried away with the background, but the suit lights look better on a dark background, so...

This is the first time I've drawn Sora. He's more cartoony than I thought he was (his waist is tiny in this outfit!). His hair spikes are a bit difficult too. Good enough for a first attempt though!

Ed chuckled. "Better than Jet's... Alright then." He activated an interface on the nightstand, and quickly coded up... what looked entirely like a sharpie, except for the glowing band of colors ranging full visible spectrum near the top, and a small rotating ring above it with an arrow to indicate the color of the marker ink. The ink would be difficult to wash off, but would start to fade just a little longer than the time in which the portal would close.

"Blood really can be a curse sometimes," Ed agreed. "I wish I could tell you some day you'll escape it, and I hope some day you do, but I haven't been able to, yet, either." He handed the marker to Sam.

He coded up something else, that materialized almost like a glowing, vaporous film that seemed to cling to his hand. He ran his hand through Eve's hair, and stuck up on end and turned a bright, glowing turquoise.

...The effect would wear off... eventually.

TRON VS TRON: ROUND 3

RIGHT SO. BACK IN APRIL 2021. I MADE A TRON ROLLER DERBY AU????? FOR SOME REASON???? AND I NEVER POSTED ABOUT IT?? SO HERE’S THAT.

These are all super super rough doodles I did during a class I think so excuse inaccuracies. My knowledge on roller derbies is still very limited but here were my thoughts. Tron, Ram, and Flynn were on one team together, with Tron as their team jammer (thus the star on his helmet). I shifted around their canon injuries n stuff to make it a result of some derby thing, like Tron’s scar. Ram’s probably always got some bandaid on his person at all time, though he’s also the only one who remembers to bring the first aid kit lol

I had initially wanted to write a fic about it, but the doc for it stays empty to this very day lol. The plot was about Tron’s team (the ‘Firewall Fliers’ or something, it was probably something much much cooler) being the regional champions for a couple years in a row and their team just lived for chaos. Every year there’s the regional championship tournament—the MCP Cup— hosted in their home rink (the MCP rink—named for the owner, McPhee, who used to get so enthusiastic during derbies that he’d turn red cheering). 

Tron is total MVP as the team jammer, and one day, he gets a really strange threat offer to join a new team that’s just joined the tournament—‘Wrath of Repurposers’ or something, I’m not the best at names lmao. Turns out someone named Clu absolutely refuses to let the Firewall Fliers win the MCP cup again so… ok I don’t really remember, but basically oh BOY something happens for Tron to get brainwashed into a mysterious newcomer named Rinzler as part of the Repurposers. When Tron doesn’t show up to one of the early games in the tournament, Flynn has to fill in for jammer but the their gets absolutely owned by the Repurposers’ new jammer. Ram and Flynn convince Yori, Lora, Crom, and Alan (who is reluctant) to join their team when the rest of the Fliers quit, thinking they’re done for when Tron’s seemingly disappeared. It’s a violent, colourful, fun little escapade to defeat Clu’s team in the final game!! As all roller derbies are. I never took this au very seriously but hey it’s fun!! I might draw out Clu’s team one day too, they’ve got their faces covered and its metal as heck :)) 

And of course, what would a roller derby au be without the weird hair. I would never pass up a reason to poke fun at Tron’s badger hair :3

FLASHBack: Week 25 - Savlonic

Time for us to check in with the titans of the Flash Animation genre, as the first Thursday of the month means First-Class FLASHBack. Because there was a request for this, we're again turning our sights on Weebl. Music has always been a big component in Weebl's Flashes, all the way back to some of his earliest Flashes from 2003 such as Scampi, or Bonjour (Caution: pixelated penis), to more recent works such as 2013's Business Cat (a song very similar to one that another of FLASHBack's "First Class" artists, Weird Al, would release a year later, Mission Statement, except Weebl's song contains 100% more cat.)   So, it was a natural fit, when in 2008, the exciting new electro-pop band Savlonic asked Weebl to make a music video for one of their songs. Electro Gypsy was released on July 17th of that year. Two thirds of the band, Roscoe Thunderpants and Evangeline D'isco, also did an exclusive interview for Weebl's Stuff website. (Drummer Kandi Flaus had a prior commitment. The video is loaded with references to pop culture, from a Flux Capacitor on the titular Gypsy's robotic horse (mounted in the orientation that Doc Brown originally sketched it, no less), to a Matrix homage (specifically the "We need guns. Lots of guns." scene), to a recreation of the Astro Cat Meme from 2006 using Evangeline as the cat, to a shout-out to Weebl's own parody of the trailer for the first Michael Bay Transformers, in the form of a movie poster for Big Ass Badgers II.   Except of course, there was no exciting new band. Savlonic was merely another invention of Jonti "Weebl" Picking's. He provided the voice of Roscoe Thunderpants, although the singer's look was modelled off of the keyboardist from the band Sparks, Ron Mael. Evangaline D'isco was voiced by his wife, Sara Darling, who was a radio presenter on the Station XFM, a title she shared with the likes of Russell Brand, Ricky Gervais, and Simon Pegg. Originally voiced by a pitch-shifted Sara Darling, Kandi Flaus's role would be taken over by Katt Wade. Virtual Bands were nothing new in the animation world though, not even in Flash Animation, as the Brothers Chaps, creators of Homestar Runner (and also "First Class" alumni), had spawned their own Virtual Band, Limozeen, six years earlier.   Savlonic's next song, Tiny Japanese Girl, was released on 22 April 2010. This video would take on a predominately red color casting for it's background, something that would become a signature in future videos (perhaps in an effort to distinguish Savlonic videos from Weebl's other songs). Mr. Thunderpants assumes the guise of the king of the kaiju, Godzilla, while Evangaline and Kandi don kimonos. Other Japanese clichés include cherry blossom trees, geta sandals, and Mount Fuji. At the end of the video, in keeping with the theme of the song: tiny Japanese girls, D'isco and Flaus take on the role of the two twin fairies that accompany Mothra, activating the giant lepidopteran to save Godzilla/Roscoe from the militarized monster patrol.   Their third song, Wandering Eye would be put out on 8 June 2011. This video marked Weebl handing animation duties over to another Flash artist, Peabo, who departed from the chibi stylizations of the previous two, rendering the band in more realistic proportions while still being generally cartoonish. For the first time Evangaline's bangs are lifted to show her eyes. Roscoe's moustache is given more width to make it less Hitler-like. Like last week, there is an implication of rodents being used for lewd purposes.   On 26 March 2012, Savlonic's fourth song, The Driver hit YouTube, and Newgrounds, as well as Weebl's own site. Roscoe's moustache has gone full-on painter's brush to further deter the Hitler comparisons. Peabo shows off some high technical prowess in this one, with panning rotations around complex-shaped vehicles, as well as some wonderful wind effect on everyone's hair and Roscoe's tie.   Computer Guy, their fifth song, would drop on 27 May 2013. Heavily inspired by the Tron franchise, this was also their reddest video yet. The band are performing at the whims of the titular Computer Guy, literally hardwired in to be peripherals to his system. Midway through the video, when he cranks up the rock out percentage sliders, we see Kandi Flaus actually drum with both sticks for the first time, showing how he has total control over them. No one machine is meant to handle that much rock however, and there's an overload and an explosion that disconnects the band. They bust out with some hoverboards (real hoverboards, the kind that don't have wheels because they actually fucking hover instead of just rolling on the ground like a decapitated segway), and fly over to his tower to do some perfect superhero landings (hard on the knees). At the end is a huge plot twist which I won't spoil here.   On 11 February 2014, a Kickstarter was launched for a Savlonic album in digital and physical forms. It raised £34,768 against it's £12,000 goal, resulting in an album titled "Red". It consisted mostly of the existing five songs plus remixes of the same. A sixth song was produced new for the album, and on 22 August 2014, Spelunker was released. Peabo gave Evangaline a new hairdo this time around, and Kandi has a new style as well. Roscoe's and Evangaline's cave explorations are supported by top-side assistants Damian Bevan and Andrew Neidig, who both donated £1,000 or more on Kickstarter to be in the video.   On April Fools day of 2016, Savlonic launched another Kickstarter for a second album, titled Neon. This time around they shifted their branding to the retrowave/synthwave/outrun aesthetic. Weebl also brought in another new Flash animator to collaborate with, Anthony "Kr3id" Price. They were able to raise £40,778 of their £30,000 goal. On 19 September 2016, a video for the track Broken was released. As before, the video featured cameos by the highest paying kickstarter backers. The song is about hard feelings over a strained relationship and the video's premise is that these feelings come out in the middle of a recording session. Kandi, upset over the band being on the verge of falling apart, again begins to use both drumsticks, and as before, eventually destroys the stage with the force of her rockin' beats. Before that happens however, Evangaline and Rosco both use their keytar and microphone as futuristic weapons to trash the studio. When the band is plunged into the undeground tunnel below their studio when everything falls apart, D'isco and Thunderpants turn their musical weapons on each other while a disgusted Flaus decides to hop into the band's car and drive off, homaging both The Driver (the car), and Wandering Eye (her keychain).   2016 was a busy year for Savlonic, as there was also a release of a remix album for Neon, and also an album called the Rosco EP, which was a collaboration between Jonti Picking and Daniel "Kaspar Funk" Dobbs. Then, at the beginning of 2017, the second video from the Neon Album was released on 6 January. Hi-Lights picks up where Broken left off, with drummer Kandi Flaus driving away by herself. This marks the first time that Katt Wade takes over voicing Kandi. While the video starts out as a pure example of the Outrun aesthetic, two thirds in, there are hints of her car being chased by some ghostly green-eyed dark specter of some kind. We're only shown hints of it following behind her car, with Kandi glancing worriedly in her rearview mirrors. At the end of the video, she's apparently captured, and shown bound to some kind of sci-fi table as we catch more reflections of the ghostly green faces in her eyes. The video ends with "To Be Continued."   However Savlonic's next video would not pick up that storyline. Instead, on 19 January 2018, I Was Made for Loving You would be released to promote the band's cover tunes album, Emulat0r. The video itself is not much to speak of as it's just the band painted up to look like the song's original artists, KISS. They stand there while an elaborate stage rotates around them. It was a bit of a return to form for Weebl, as many of his early Flashes were based on simple looping visuals. A few weeks later on 2 February 2018, a video would drop for Johnny Massacre's track Beastman Blitz, which featured samples from Savlonic's Broken. This video marked the first time that the virtual band had been integrated with a live action person.   In May of 2018, Weebl went back to kickstarter to raise funds for yet another Savlonic album, Black Plastic, raising £37,055 of a £32,000 goal. Nearly eleven months later, on 18 Mar 2019, Weebl would team up with Arkanell to release a video for the song Action Causes Reaction, animated not in Adobe Flash, but in the Unity 3D engine. The change in toolsets was needed to support the making of a video in 360 VR. The video is heavily Tron themed, but it also has a blocky, voxelated look similar to Minecraft.   That's about all I have on Roscoe Thunderpants, Evangaline D'isco, and purple-haired drummer Kandi Flaus. Next week, a different purple haired girl, and her angry squirrel.

But it was in a discord chat after I posted this page from the Tron novelization

Which has a version of the Deleted Love Scene but in this version Tron gets his own Magical Girl transformation like Yori's, except his hair has a "warrior's forelock and queue"

and that was the day I learned that a "queue" is that little rat tail in the back of the Badger Hair Tron hairdo that's only ever seen in behind-the-scenes production photos

(it's hard to find any photos showing the back, though, I think Tron is self-conscious about his queue, lol)

ANYWAY

Since Tron is a sentient computer program

And since I just TODAY learned, from this post, that "queue" is also apparently a programming term

I am gonna headcanon (haircanon? header-canon? ha!) that when you include a queue in programming, your program manifests inside the Computer World with a funky rat tail hairdo

(and no I'm not gonna queue this post because that is TOO many levels of pun for me right now)

This may seem odd, but one thing I think really detracts from the otherworldly look of the "programs" is the presence of visible hair.

Partly but really I think it’s that legacy went a natural skin tone and hair color route- they didn’t even have dyed hair the most “wild” variation was black and different bobs.

I haven’t watched uprising but I’ve seen images and the return to grey scale skin 100% improves the hair situation, that and a greater ability to get creative with it.

Hair can work if you know how to get creative and do increasingly wild hair. There’s that one data pusher and less we forget badger hair Tron 💕

ok so the way I'm shipping Constantine and Jackie-Lou is this

she's an engineer that worked on the ship that takes them to the central planet

after the star mission, Constantine throws away the stat-o-tron in disgust and Jackie sees him

intrigued, she fishes the thing out of the trash. she tried fixing it but she doesn't know where to begin bc she doesn't know what it does. so she asks around the palace a little, Prof. Agar and Artemis, but Constantine catches wind of this

he's basically like first of all don't go through my garbage and second of all you can keep that thing bc it's junk it doesn't do anything (he’s very upset at himself for the whole star thing, and he hates being reminded of his failures)

Jackie goes back to her workshop and she's telling her droid Belicosa about it (Belicosa is one of the hovering kind, not a full size like Artemis, bc Jackie mostly just likes someone there to talk to rather than assist her)

Belicosa has a corrupted personality so she's very... loud and enthusiastic

anyway Jackie is going on about how just bc the stat-o-tron didn't reset the stars doesn't mean it's useless, I wish the king could see that, maybe then he wouldn't be so hard on himself

Belicosa's like OOH SOMEONE HAS A CRUSH ON THE KING!!!!

Jackie's like I do not shut up or I will shut you off

Belicosa's like YEAH YOU DO... IM GONNA GO TELL HIM

Jackie tackles her to the ground and turns off her voicebox

anyway I think soon after the star mission is when Constantine acknowledges Sal-Lee at which point Jackie turns Belicosa's voicebox back on bc she's freakin out like the rest of Oppa-Irri

one day after that Jackie runs into Verba in the palace (she’s there trying to track down Prof. Agar and get his help on the stat-o-tron) and she’s like OH it’s you and Verba is like sorry I don’t give autographs anymore (she’s. so tired with everything happening.) and Jackie’s like oh it’s not that I just wanted to ask you... (Verba braces herself for some intrusive question about how the king is in bed, or something, which is all anyone wants to know anymore) ...does the king... like... purple hair...? and Verba is like OH well isn’t that something. my advice is make the first move, that’s what I did. and she winks.

Jackie is like hahaaaaaa I could never!!! and Belicosa is like I CAN!! and she speeds off down the hall to go find the king. Jackie just stands there mortified and Verba super-speeds to catch Belicosa before she goes too far. and then she’s like now now, if Jackie-Lou wants to tell the king that she likes him, that’s her prerogative. and she winks before guiding Belicosa back to Jackie.

because Constantine was standing just in the connecting hallway, out of Jackie’s sight but Verba sure saw him.

Verba tells Jackie goodbye (Jackie having forgotten all about finding Prof. Agar) and then goes to see if Constantine is still standing there and he is and she’s like you know, you should go for it. you deserve to have some fun again and now it’s Constantine’s turn to be mortified.

soon after that Constantine makes his way down to Jackie’s lab and she’s like WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE SIR YOUR MAJESTY and he’s like oh... you know... just checking on the stat-o-tron how is that going and she’s like um. well I haven’t fixed it yet do you want it back? and he’s like NOPE that’s fine I never want it back well keep up the good work goodbye  and then he leaves

Belicosa starts shrieking about how the king must know and Jackie is like WELP IT’S TIME TO LEAVE OPPA-IRRI I DUNNO WHAT I WAS THINKING COMING HERE COME ON LET’S PACK WE’RE LEAVING FOREVER

she goes back to Van-Tu and tries to put the whole thing behind her bc she’s about to die of embarrassment. Belicosa badgers her about going back but she just shuts off her voicebox

meanwhile Constantine has been planning a sort of debutante ball for Sal-Lee since she’s a princess now and must be presented to the court and all and he sends an invitation down to Jackie’s lab but it gets sent back and then he finds out she went back to Van-Tu and he’s like oh. well then. and Artemis is like should I forward it to her on Van-Tu? and Constantine’s like Oh yes fine well I did invite her anyway you may as well sure it’s fine

Jackie gets the invitation and turns on Belicosa’s voicebox again so they can freak out together

and then she goes???

and that’s all I got rn this went on for FAR long enough bye
