October 19th 1687 saw the first sedan chairs available for public hire introduced to Edinburgh.

Sedan chairs carried wealthy people around Edinburgh, particularly in the City's Old Town, where the tightly packed houses made some of the streets too narrow to allow a carriage to pass along them.

Sedan chairs permitted passengers to be carried from door to door, and even from inside one building to another, avoiding the need to walk along the filthy streets, where their expensive clothes and footwear could get dirty.

Rich people sometimes had their own elaborately decorated chairs, but plain black painted chairs could be hired, a bit like hiring a taxi today.

A 1768 list of fares in Edinburgh suggested a fee of 6d (2.5 pence) for a journey within the City, 1 shilling and 6d (7.5p) for a journey half a mile outside the City, and 4 shillings (20p) for a whole day's hire.

The second picture shows a small stone-built lean-to building with wooden doors is probably the smallest listed building in Edinburgh. It is situated in Tweeddale Court, off the Royal Mile, and was built in the 18th century to store sedan chairs. The sedan chair reached the height of its popularity in Edinburgh during the 18th century. In 1687, six chairs were available for public hire, rising to 180 hackney-chairs and 50 private chairs by 1779. The main sedan-chair stance “taxi rank” was at the Tron Kirk.

Sedan chairs were carried on long poles placed through brackets at either side of the chair. The door was at the front so the passenger could get in and out without the poles being removed. Two people known as 'Chairmen' were needed to carry each chair. Many of the Chairmen came from the Highlands of Scotland. They had to be strong, fit and healthy as they were often standing outside in all weathers.

You can see the sedan chair in the other photo in The Museum of Edinburgh on the Canongate, The National Museum of Scotland also has an example said to have been owned by a doctor.The first pic is an iteresting sketch of Lieutenant General James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton, the Premier Peer of Scotland and Keeper of the Palace of Holyrood arriving at the Scottish Parliament House in Edinburgh. He was a Scottish nobleman, who played an important but equivocal part in the Union of Scotland and England in 1707, as you can see the people were not happy about the impending union.......

Cryptonian Conlangs: Help wanted.

I need to make a few languages, they aren't supposed to be natural, for a confederation of supernatural hackers, one faction of which can upload their own bodies as well as those they take with them into a digital world, Tron style. I want these languages to feel like programming languages and I have a few ideas on how to achieve that:

Labeling of parts of speech to clear up ambiguity.

Variable assignment as anaphora.

vocal bracketing to set apart different parts of a sentence and enclose quotes.

Every sentence starting with a line identifier that can be used as a sort of anaphora when referencing them shorthanded.

What else could I do to achieve this effect? Also, I might also look to esoteric programming languages for inspiration as well.

They're an AI doctor who's very funny, a part of the main cast, and are left on for a questionable amount of time which leads to shenanigans.

He's a holographic doctor who takes over the role of the ship doctor. While the crew eventually finds a way to enable him to go to different areas of the ship, his being a hologram (at its core, a computer program) is a key aspect of his character that is very relevant in many episodes

He is a virtual hologram of an emergency medical program on board a space ship. He is a sentient AI in universe.

Quorra is an ISO. ISO's or Isomorphic Algorithms, are a race of programs that spontaneously evolved on the Grid, as opposed to being written by users.
