Here's Prehnite the Gemwing! Gemwings belong to the wonderful @snaill-dragon
I loved designing her, although I did struggle with the legs a lot and I couldn't draw them like they should be. If you have time, look up the wikipedia image for Prehnite, it's such a pretty stone.

Yo time to talk about my beloved little The Magnus Archives AU >:3 Here's the AU version of a prevalent side character from the main story
“Fish” (kept only a part of the old name because he thinks it’s funny) is a Spiral avatar, Distortion. Several years ago, Varan was given the opportunity to lessen Distortion’s threat by tying his most loyal team member to it. This dragon knew that he would not return the same, but agreed anyway (in short, for those who are familiar with TMA - almost the same as in canon, but with a much more informated consent). Ally is a strong word here, but he doesn’t bother the gang members and sometimes even carries out Varan’s orders if they don’t run counter to his interests. “Fish” doesn’t remember much of his former life, but he knows how he treated two dragons: Varan, his former leader, and Newt, with whom he was once close. ...However, memories of old friendship did not prevent him from giving Newt the worst week (at that time) of his life when he was imprisoned on his territory. Now “Fish” often visits the surviving Morticians and even hides their location from Varan - he is too investested in what chaos this trio can wreak in the world to care about his former leader's wishes.
The plot of the AU is very different from the main story, so I want to talk about it in more detail in the future. I don't have to fear for any spoilers here, it's just a really fun side project that I don't take too seriously. In general, I really like to look at characters from other sides; it even helps to write the main story quite well!
(I’ll talk about what chewed Newt later) Honestly, I'm kinda nervious about posting about this AU, even though I really enjoy sketching out ideas for it. I know that it'll mostly get ignored, but I'm trying to get over my fear of sharing the things I love besides my usual stuff, so I'm pressing on :"3

Wanted to get this HC out of my head and onto something so here:
I headcannon Orca as being romantically/platonically involved with a dragon from another tribe during the war. I personally headcannon her falling in love with a rainwing dragoness (would be a really funny coincidence given her siblings) and wanting to elope with her.
However, she stayed because she felt that she had to be there for her subjects given that her mother has little to no regard for them so as the princess she feels pressured to be better.
Another thing I also headcannon is that Coral was still a bad mother prior to Orca’s death with her death worsening that side of Coral. As Coral is very much self-entitled and egotistical with the dragons around her being ones who she either has to use cause they are the best option or sates her ego and pride as even Gill falls into the latter category and notable doesn’t really have the spine to go against coral for more that brief moments (as seen in the prologue to book 9 where he just admits defeat and lets Coral kill a guard he full-heartedly believe deserved to live). And these traits don’t just spring up from no where so while Coral and other dragons may try to paint the family as healthy with Orca’s challenge being a complete surprise I read it more so as an Albatross thing where the royal family just sweeps their own bad doing and excuse the bad behaviour of others in their family using a scapegoat.
Coral was very much heartbroken by Orca’s challenge and having to kill her but I don’t think Orca was too enthusiastic about killing her mother at least for the crown. If she was then why not use her magic why give her mother that respect. I think that has to do with Orca have a very personal vendetta with her mother and wanting to prove herself right and that using her magic will not satisfy that and maybe she feared that if she did she would just be like her mother.
As for what Orca wanted to do with the crown, I believe she wanted to either abolish the seawing monarchy as that helps explain why she placed the statue where she did. By having the statue in the royal hatchery she is targeting dragonets who might be raised to re-establish the monarchy or if she planned on keeping the throne then find a way to give it to someone so that the crown isn’t given based on blood or she wanted to become immortal (I think she just wanted to destroy the monarchy with the statue being her first move as the wording means that even if the royals want to make it so that males can be heirs the male eggs will also be destroyed as well).
However as we know Orca failed by fluke or the scene was much different but coral rationalises the death by saying it is an accident. After all why wear the tusk that killed your daughter if you have so many bad feelings about it.
Whether Coral knew about Orca and her mate in this hc doesn’t matter much unless you want to lean into the route that Coral killed Orca’s love which fuelled Orca’s drive to kill her mother.
I like to think that Orca’s mate is still alive and was wondering for so long about what happened to Orca until the news reaches her. Add a tragic element to the story.

my official take on the moon/qibli/winter love triangle is that winterwatcher is a much grander, epic romance, and moonbli is a much more level, sweet-and-simple romance, but ultimately i think it was a better decision to have the latter be the canon romance in a series primarily marketed towards children and teens than fall into the "bad boy" romance trope, and instead romanticize the earnest, genuine, sweet relationship
obviously there's way more nuance to this involving internalized/unconscious bias, and winter doesn't even REALLY fit into the "bad boy" archetype, but purely based on genre conventions, the gruff, rude, brooding, tortured hero VERY often falls into that category, and at the ages of 7-14 most of us were very LIKELY to be romanticizing that archetype, which again is very often treated as interchangeable with the "abusive bad boy" trope, and while i might have a few gripes with the writing of moonbli and i ENJOY winterwatcher a whole lot, i DO appreciate the more gentle, "safe" romance being treated as the ideal, rather than the tense and angst-filled nature of the alternative

Woke up and got to thinking again! First off, I think that Felix would at least appreciate becoming human because staying a sentimonster would mean outliving everyone he loves and I don't think he's emotionally stable enough for that. Neither is Adrien. But I've taken your input and have reworked it: instead of making them fully human, the potion just makes their human side more dominant. This makes it so that they're less durable than a sentimonster but more than the average human + them no longer being tied to an amok (or their own heart/soul/brain becomes the amok). Why do I want this? Just for the sake of one fucking scene:
Gabriel, paranoid that Felix was onto him, stole the ring that used to be his amok. Adrien and Felix confront Gabriel in his Hawkmoth lair for everything, all the pain and suffering he caused. When Gabriel's usual bullshit doesn't work, he tries to use to amoks to force the pair into obedience. Except it doesn't work and he bluescreens at his loss of control. Adrien and Felix transform and Gabriel fucking loses it. Cue super awesome emotional battle between Chat Noir & Argos VS Hawkmoth while they wait for the rest of team miraculous to show up.
Also, hot take: Amélie should be the one to kill off Gabriel. The bastard spent years neglecting her nephew, deprived her sister of a good death sorrounded by loved ones, tried to kill her nephew on multiple occasions, and tried to kill her son. There's also an element of FINALLY having a competant adult in the room because all of team miraculous are CHILDREN and Fu did jack shit for them. They need a competant adult to take care of them and handle the problem's they never should've had in the first place.
Seriously just let her casually walk up to Gabriel and stab him and just leave him for dead as she moves on to care for her kids.
Bonus: You are absolutely right, we should've had a PeaDragonSnake (PDS) trio. Be it platonically, a polycule, or just a Golden Trio scenario where only two are dating but the three are so inseparable that you can't tell who's dating who. Personally I'm partial to the final option with FeLuka + Bi Kagami desperately pining for Zoé. Zoé is pining just as hard but is too much of a gay disaster to approach and Chloé is making Kagami travel to The Lands of fucking Morder and retrieve the Sword from the Stone just to prove herself worthy of even considering dating her sister. Here are the fics that converted me: FeLuka & ZoeGami.
I have a particular scene in mind where the trio is just blackout drunk. Kagami is serenading really bad poetry to describe Zoé's beauty while Felix & Luka are just making out in the background. Amelie picks them up before clothes start flying. Cut to another bar where its Chloe, Sabrina, and Adrien blackout drunk. Chloe is smugly recording Adrien being pathecially whiny that Marinette isn't picking up (it's like 2 am) and is starting to cry while Zoe is having gay panic at how pretty Kagami is in that photo. She shares it with the whole class.
In addition, Kagami's confrontation with her mother should've been a sword fight on top of a skyscraper in the middle of a storm. There's a barrier preventing Chat Noir and Ladybug from entering, on one side ya got Kagami (no miraculous, just a cool sword blessed by Longg) and on the other ya got (willingly) akumatized Tomoe. Tomoe is spouting her usual controlling bullshit while Kagami is silent and glaring daggers at her mother. The only other people in the dome are Luka and Felix who refuse to leave Kagami without backup. Cue epic fight scene that ends with Tomoe losing both her arms and a leg. Kagami also loses a few chunks of skin. It ends with Kagami taking away her mother's ring and disowning her as a traitor to the Tsurugi clan unworthy of the name (oh how the turns have tabled). Meanwhile Tomoe is absolutely terrified of how beastial her daughter became and backs off. Both stubborn bitches refuse Ladybug's miracle cure cause they need the scars to remember. (inspiration)
After that, conversation at the Tsurugi household is practically dead. Tomoe is ashamed at her loss and breaks just thinking about her prosthetics. Meanwhile, Kagami healed rather nicely (curtesy of the side effects) and is thriving while she switches between the Couffaine boathouse and the Graham de Vanily penthouse.
Ykw that scene’s pretty good human!senticousins propaganda
Also hello? How is this the first I’m hearing of this. Amelie should absolutely get to murder Gabe
Thank you for the fics also, Ima go read those
Okokok while I am a Feligami shipper, Zogami hits like hello? Oh yeah. Up there with Kagaminette for me
I think Kagami should get to write bad poetry about whoever her love interest is, and also anything and anything. I think she should be our Martin Blackwood and write horrible poetry for us
Chole getting blackmail material I see
Kagami sword fight?! Kagami sword fight?! Hell yes
Here’s my idea for that: I like the storm bit, and the showdown, top of a building is peak, but instead of Felix and Luka being there, them trying to be there, to support Kagami, but like LB and CN being unable to due to the storm
Hear me out: Kagami’s mother figures out that she’s the dragon miraculous user and uses that to get her alone on the roof, and then confronting her by handing Kagami (still transformed) her sword. Kagami, knowing she’s caught, decides to detransform and fight her mother like that, as her daughter. They battle and eventually Kagami wins, and her mother rejects the akuma on her own, accepting the loss
As a foil to Gabe, I’d have her mother learn from her mistakes. She cuts off her deals with Gabe and grows closer with her daughter. She listens to her wants more, and while she’s still strict and has high expectations, she also becomes more lenient about letting Kagami do what she wants and enjoys

ok making hivewings white in my humanizations would make arc 3 worse than before but like. Bees aren't native to America and were brought there by colonization from Europe so there's a lot of cruel irony that works in my favor there 😭😭 please don't come at me

i feel like i never shut up about being extra extra safe in kin spaces and then i go on hour-long walks through the woods with no lights during a new moon for the kinfeelz. which is… probably pretty objectively more dangerous than posting too many kin calls or relying too heavily on the stranger’s pendulum !

Hrng more WoF character sketches while I chip away at my other projects. Featuring even more green SeaWings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Rendering practice with Turtle against The Brightest Night’s cover. I rewatched Klaus and fell in love with that movie’s style and it inspired me to try something other than flat shading. Definitely gonna be implementing that with my Listener headshot.
2. Shark and Moray concept exploration. I like the idea of Shark having tiger shark stripes. Not terribly satisfied with his coloration as I mostly borrowed it from the graphic novel. Moray was fun. Maybe I made her too eel-ish but I enjoy exaggerating designs and then reeling them back down into something a little more concrete. For this concept I went in a direction that made her vaguely unsettling but also a little vacant in the head. The only thing she’s ever thinking about is Coral. I wish I knew what her deal was. I bet Coral played a heavy role in her upbringing to ensure she was subservient and completely worshipful of her in order to avoid a potential challenger. I’m definitely strolling into headcanon territory here, but we’ve never met Moray’s mother, so my theory is that Coral stepped in after her untimely death (or disappearance ooo), as a way to control Moray. I could absolutely see it causing bad blood between Shark and Coral.
3. Shark again, but with an emphasis on shapes. He’s much more rectangular and sharp with a dark, heavy brow. This is my final version for the time being. I gave him a little wobbegong beard and the eyes of a man who is dead inside.
4. Ah, and Whirlpool. He’s been a favorite to draw because I get to revel in villainous design tropes. I didn’t want to make him overtly ugly, but he does have an unsavory look going on. Leaned into a scheme-y advisor archetype. He’s drippy and downturned with large, heavy, lidded eyes. I, uh, weirdly enough ended up taking a lot of design inspiration from Micolash (Bloodborne), primarily in the eyes and the smarmy grin. He’s my personal headcanon for Whirlpool’s voice even if the characters are hardly alike. Micolash’s voice just has this perfect oozing quality to it that makes my ears itch. If not him, then my other choice is that guy from the “what would you call this in English” meme. Y’know the one.

Is it just me, or is the way WoF presents disability... actually not that bad? Don't get me wrong, it is FAR from perfect, and I would love to see better representation as the series continues! However, I'll make my case:
I think the thing people criticize the most is when Turtle mentions that he and Anemone were working on a spell to restore Starflight and Tamarin's sight. This is definitely alarming; it plays into the tired idea of disabled people needing to be "fixed." But I think people forget that Turtle and Anemone are two young children with a limited view on the world. Their mother is extremely judgemental and believes in genetic superiority 😭 They might not understand that there is nothing wrong with being disabled, and that you can happily live with a disability. We also don't know if Tamarin or Starflight even consented to the spell, so it may have never been realized anyways. I would like to see Tui properly address this in future books, though. (And if it wasn't clear, I'm not justifying Turtle and Anemone's actions; just saying that there's context here that most people don't consider).
I'm also aware that the series villainizes some of its disabled characters (Queen Scarlet, Chameleon, Queen Battlewinner, etc.) Disabled people have a long history of being villainized, so it is understandable to feel uncomfortable about this! But it's not like WoF lacks ANY positive representation. Tau, Clay, Tamarin, and Starflight are all characters who I think are really cool!! And I like Mayfly and Osprey too (even though they're minor characters). I think even Peril could count...? And a lot of her character arc is about learning to live with her firescales.
And yes, there's stuff like The Weirdling Tower... but that is EXPLICITLY treated as a bad and gross thing, so I don't get why some people use that as proof that Tui hates disabled people. Same goes for ableist characters like Burn and Scarlet (who are also EXPLICITLY presented as horrible and evil).
My biggest criticism for the way Tui writes disability is that most of her disabled characters that are considered positive representation don't play a huge role in the books. We have Starflight and Clay, but when they get their disabilities, the arc that focuses on them is close to over. It would be nice to see more disabled characters that are more involved in the story.
